Exactly! It makes me nostalgic for how excited I was and the pleasure I used to get playing 2D Mario games when they first came out. I don't think playing those old games again will ever give me the same feeling they used to, but the New Mario footage makes that nostalgic part of me think that maybe I CAN get that same feeling again because it's, like, old but new ALL AT THE SAME TIME. But then I simultaneously feel sad because I really doubt it can ever be like it once was. And I also think "Man, I'm old now". And I also think "Why can't I get no satisfaction from killing Goombas and Snifits and making vines grow and bouncing turtles shells against stairs for infinite 1-ups like I could once upon a time?" O NEW MARIO Y U BRAEK HAERT??/

Yeah, these are really starting to piss me off. I see them everywhere, and I'm sure they're the only way to get to some worlds (Still can't get to world 4...), and I've no idea how to use them or find them. Then again, with Mario 3 I wouldn't have known how to find whistles if I hadn't seen The Wizard before playing it. Nintendo needs to make another movie to help me.

I've been trying to word this for AGES! I went out of my way and spent a tenner more to buy the Cube version of Res Evil 4 instead of the PS2 one, just because I wanted LESS GAME for my money. It's much more fun to charge through a game in a couple of days, then do it again, than it is to never finish it.
I realise I sound like I'm talking in opposites like on the Wii thread, but I swear I'm completely serious. I like to feel like I've mastered games inside out.

I think I have realised I secretly hate games, and merely have to beat them because of some strange OCD.
I have all the worlds unlocked, and I have still managed to do things that weren't playing this gme today. Nice. I think I actually spent most of my time trying to unlock cannons and whatnot and beating bosses as mini mario. The thing I've found most annoying is trying to get the right power ups for specific things...

how does everyone feel about this, some time after it's actually come out?
does it belong in the pantheon or was it a failed effort to recapture 2d mario glory?
me, i liked it ok, but found it a little short, and short on surprises/secrets/fun stuff to explore. and now, however long since i've played it - a year or 2 or 3? - i can barely remember a single level.
all i remember is not being able to make it through stages as tiny mario to get to the part where you needed to use the tininess squeeze in somewhere. but i also remember loving it.
― Ømår Littel (Jordan), Wednesday, 21 October 2009 18:13 (sixteen years ago)
I concur with every word of this although I liked it enough to %100 it (and I never %100 games). it really could have used more suits. on the plus side it looks like NSMBWii will be addressing every one of these complaints and therefore I expect it to own in a most aggressive fashion.
― okamadablobisney (jamescobo), Wednesday, 21 October 2009 18:29 (sixteen years ago)
yup, I agree with both of you 100%
― coz (webinar), Wednesday, 21 October 2009 21:41 (sixteen years ago)
I think there's some definitely some retrospective regret that this game really wasn't the direct followup to SMB3 that it was advertised... definitely not enough suits and distinct worlds. That said, I also 100%'d it, so it was definitely worthwhile. Still I'd lower my expectations for NSMB Wii. (Never raise your expecations for anything!)
― Nhex, Thursday, 22 October 2009 04:09 (sixteen years ago)
I thought of it as a remake of SMB1 -- limited powerups, bowser (jr) at the end of every world, all left-to-right stages, etc. I sold it after getting 100%.
― abanana, Thursday, 22 October 2009 11:43 (sixteen years ago)
I really enjoyed it at the time, but found it largely very easy (apart from, as mentioned upthread, trying to get to the end of levels as tiny Mario - mostly due to the space jumping physics when you're wee). I've tried playing it since - the yardstick of a great Mario game, and just couldn't really get into it again. Meanwhile I can still pick up SMB3 or SMWorld and play through them world-by-world and enjoy it.
Hoping for something great from NSMBWii but, like others, not getting my hopes too high.

4 player coop sounds amazing (if you play as Yoshi you can eat other players). Is it nuts to consider getting a Wii this late in its game?
― Euler, Friday, 6 November 2009 06:59 (sixteen years ago)
The one review I've read actually said they didn't really care for the multiplayer, but loved the single player. The complaint seemed to be that while the 4 player was fine for a lark, it was just too chaotic and frustrating to try to make any kind of progress, that it just didn't flow. That kind of reminds me of my experience with LittleBigPlanet, where anything with more than two players just got too busy. Just one person's opinion though... http://www.computerandvideogames.com/article.php?id=226725
Now is a great time to get a Wii as the price has come down, and there's a small but excellent library of games available. Also Sin and Punishment 2 and Capcom vs Tatsunoko are both set to be released early in 2010
― Jeff LeVine, Friday, 6 November 2009 07:42 (sixteen years ago)

― Jeff LeVine, Friday, 6 November 2009 15:18 (sixteen years ago)
haha, good point there
― Nhex, Friday, 6 November 2009 15:22 (sixteen years ago)
is there really the slightest chance in hell nintendo is going to put out a new platform next year?
― banned, on the run (s1ocki), Friday, 6 November 2009 15:29 (sixteen years ago)
My feeling is it will be 2011, but who knows. I could definitely see Nintendo doing a refresh of the Wii in 2010, similiar to their DS strategy. Basically a new, slightly more expensive Wii that will be capable of displaying games in HD and will include a new motion plus controller as standard (with the current two piece system combined into one). Would go perfect with a HD new Super Mario Galaxy 2, for example (I'd buy one). It does seem like with both the 360 getting a Natal based refresh and the PS3 adding Wii-like motion controls, Nintendo might feel like they have to do somethinbg to keep people excited about their system.
― Jeff LeVine, Friday, 6 November 2009 15:38 (sixteen years ago)
right. nintendo just moves so slow i'd think we'd have heard about it already if it was going to happen in 2k10. don't get me wrong, i would totally finally buy a wii if that were to happen!
― banned, on the run (s1ocki), Friday, 6 November 2009 15:50 (sixteen years ago)
These days it seems like they like to keep their cards close though, doesn't it? We only heard about both DSi and DS XL a few months before they were to be released. That's why I think come E3 or summer there's still a possibility they may announce a refresh of their hardware, but also why I feel like, if by then they haven't, it'll be pretty safe to assume it's not coming until at least 2011.
― Jeff LeVine, Friday, 6 November 2009 16:02 (sixteen years ago)
Just imagine how huge it would be if at E3 2010 Nintendo announces they're releasing an enhanced / premium Wii with HD output and an improved controller that includes better motion plus and a wireless nunchuck. Also HD versions of Super Mario Galaxy 2, HD Zelda and HD Nintendodogs & cats. It doesn't seem impossible to me.
Sorry for the derail
― Jeff LeVine, Friday, 6 November 2009 16:49 (sixteen years ago)
no i would be into that!
― banned, on the run (s1ocki), Friday, 6 November 2009 17:05 (sixteen years ago)
that's quite the wishlist! i don't know though. let's say they are doing this. and they've already told developers this will exist (unlikely since it def. would've leaked by now). that means except for nintendo's own output, no major third party games to take advantage of until late 2011/2012. at that point a PS4/X720 could well be out or announced. since nintendo is still on top i don't know if they want to undercut themselves by shooting early, that hasn't worked for the last few console generations. (this assumes of course there isn't a "real" Wii successor coming out soon after, if they're bother to do Wii HD)
not really related, but i just don't get how nintendo has the same third party output problems with the Wii that it did with the Gamecube. Especially when they're doing great with the DS!
― Nhex, Friday, 6 November 2009 17:13 (sixteen years ago)
Yeah, I'm hardly convinced myself, I just don't feel like it's impossible (and it would be smart!). It will be quite sad for Nintendo if they head into fall 2010 just announcing a couple of games for the wii vitality sensor :(

I have a .xls of the best wii games if anyone needs one
― coz (webinar), Friday, 6 November 2009 17:20 (sixteen years ago)
it's actually a .txt but whtevs
coz I know you're fooling but I'm kinda getting excited about the Wii as a platform and if you have a list, I'd love to see it...the DS list you guys put together earlier this year on the DS thread has been pretty much my gaming agenda for the last six months; solid gold.
― Euler, Friday, 6 November 2009 17:22 (sixteen years ago)
solid gold wii imo: Klonoa, Tiger Woods 2010, Little King's Story, Okami, Punch-Out!!, Resident Evil 4: Wii Edition, Resident Evil, Resident Evil 0, Fire Emblem: Radiant Dawn, Pro Evolution Soccer 2010, House of the Dead: Overkill, NPC! ― coz (webinar), Friday, 6 November 2009 18:16 (sixteen years ago)
yeah.. see... i don't know, half that gold list are either gamecube ports and stuff that doesn't sound super appealing - or was ignored even by cultists. like klonoa, bit.trip stuff. dead space? super paper mario, isn't that totally forgotten at this point?
i don't mean to be such a debbie downer but i dunno
― Nhex, Friday, 6 November 2009 18:29 (sixteen years ago)
dead space!!!
― coz (webinar), Friday, 6 November 2009 18:32 (sixteen years ago)
dead space extraction is a pretty good game actually, a solid rental at least. anticipating far more wii games than ps3 games tbh.
― zappi, Friday, 6 November 2009 18:35 (sixteen years ago)
I'm still catching up on Gamecube games (just got WarioWorld and Mario Power Tennis in the mail today)!
― Jeff LeVine, Friday, 6 November 2009 18:44 (sixteen years ago)
Super Paper Mario was rad; my mom lol has a wii and over a Christmas break a couple of years ago I played that mf pretty much day/night. Maybe she'll let me have the wii; I'm sure that I played it more in that three day binge than she's played it since.
also I want Punch-Out so badly
― Euler, Friday, 6 November 2009 19:43 (sixteen years ago)
you should. it rules!
― Nhex, Friday, 6 November 2009 19:44 (sixteen years ago)
I wanted to like Super Paper Mario so much since Thousand Year Door is pretty much my favorite GC game but aaaaaaaaaaaagh ppl be talkin in it. I think the correct way to get through the opening scene is to set one of those drinking birds up by the wiimote and then go out for a walk.

This is surprisingly difficult with two players. Even cooperating, it's hard not to get in each other's way and mess stuff up. Crazy fun though!

― original bgm, Saturday, 24 April 2010 16:55 (sixteen years ago)
maybe it's bc I don't play very frequently but I just can't get w/the controls. way too sluggish for a mario game.
― original bgm, Saturday, 24 April 2010 17:06 (sixteen years ago)
The floaty, slow imprecision of the jumps really kinda dogs it. Seems like it was intentional to suit the multiplayer aspect of the game, where it does work (in the crazy contradictory/competitive sense).
― Nhex, Saturday, 24 April 2010 17:08 (sixteen years ago)
yeah, "imprecise" is exactly the right word. I die a lot in this game and it often doesn't feel like it's my fault.
it's a shame because the level design is often pretty inventive but the game is just not that much fun bc of the controls.
― original bgm, Saturday, 24 April 2010 17:23 (sixteen years ago)
i tht the levels were p lame
― where display names die, unrecognized (Lamp), Saturday, 24 April 2010 17:23 (sixteen years ago)
it's not even close to mario 3 (or even mario world) in that respect, but I do think it's fairly good on the whole. the castles in particular.
tho I could do without the motion control junk, as usual.
― original bgm, Saturday, 24 April 2010 17:38 (sixteen years ago)
mario had floaty jumping? don't ever play littlebigplanet then
― aztec gamera (zappi), Saturday, 24 April 2010 19:01 (sixteen years ago)
The DS version had it too, but it didn't feel quite as sluggish. I most definitely like these games, but it's all part of a distinct, plushier feel to the games - I don't want to say "less hardcore" because the game can still have challenging difficulty, but it's definitely away from the general speed of both play and repetitive death from the originals. Even the music styles support this atmosphere. A strange fallback from converting the 3D Marios in reverse to 2D again.
In particular one of the things I wasn't ever able to get a hold of, but seems like an important thing I'm missing, is the technique where you start running - it feels very slow - and when Mario has accelerated enough, do multiple pinpoint successive spinning jumps. Sometimes the levels seem to be designed for this super high risk technique to be used, and other times it feels like you are forced to just tiptoe through.
― Nhex, Saturday, 24 April 2010 20:30 (sixteen years ago)
Even the new Wii game had the "floaty" jumping! I'm glad to hear someone else mention it, because all my friends acted like I was crazy when I complained about the weird looseness of the controls.
― Dan I., Monday, 26 April 2010 03:35 (sixteen years ago)
I am only 3 levels in (and I've played some of level 5) but the "floatyness" hasn't got to me and I never thought about it until I've seen it mentioned here. Floatyness could be a pester during boss battles but I'm sure the difficulty in this game is just fine (maybe a bit easy? - I can't say for sure yet). But Luigi or Princess Toadstool in Super Mario 2 would definitely win in a floatyness competition.
― CaptainLorax, Monday, 26 April 2010 04:36 (sixteen years ago)
It's not just that the jumps are floaty, but the whole physics and inertia of running, jumping, and landing feels really weird - like how when you start running, Mario is like a tub of butter on ice, and it seems to take just a bit too long to be fast enough to jump forward - similarly, when you land. You can get used to it eventually, but it definitely doesn't have that click to it that SMB3 and SMW have.
― Nhex, Monday, 26 April 2010 04:41 (sixteen years ago)
You should try Kid Kool on a NES emulator to feel the most messed up running/jumping controls ever... I used to own the game and I still like it but woo-wee
― CaptainLorax, Monday, 26 April 2010 05:26 (sixteen years ago)
I am only 3 levels in (and I've played some of level 5) but the "floatyness" hasn't got to me and I never thought about it until I've seen it mentioned here.
fwiw, I didn't have too much of an issue w/the controls until the game got a bit harder.
― original bgm, Monday, 26 April 2010 13:39 (sixteen years ago)
So I am playing Super Mario RPG, which is a really fun game and lives up to the hype. But it's kind of strange because it is the first 3D Mario game (complete with jump mechanics) and also the first CGI-rendered Mario game. At times it feels proto-Super Mario 3D World.
I am wondering why Nintendo doesn't just make a Super Mario Bros. CGI movie. The cutscenes (hell, the gameplay even) are already up there w big budget CGI cartoons imho. Plus an official movie that wasn't live action but actually made by Nintendo would be guaranteed nostalgia money, would have tons of marketing/cross-promotion potential, etc. Nintendo is shooting itself in the foot every minute that goes by and there is not a SMB movie in production.
