s1ocki (slutsky), Tuesday, 7 March 2006 16:49 (twenty years ago)

when i think about this game i feel like i've just picked up an invincibility star

s1ocki (slutsky), Tuesday, 7 March 2006 16:49 (twenty years ago)

I don't really understand why I'm not excited about this, but I'm not. I suppose I'm still just waiting for a proper Mario 64 II, and I'm never going to get one.

JimD (JimD), Tuesday, 7 March 2006 16:52 (twenty years ago)

mario belongs in 2d.

s1ocki (slutsky), Tuesday, 7 March 2006 17:20 (twenty years ago)

Is this in 2d?

If it is good, I will buy a DS (lite).

Jordan (Jordan), Tuesday, 7 March 2006 19:35 (twenty years ago)

slocki otm more sprites plz

i think the gameplay is 2d but it uses 3d models? i dunno i've seen like one screenshot.

inert false cat (sleep), Tuesday, 7 March 2006 19:38 (twenty years ago)

there are a couple youtube things with footage from the game:

http://youtube.com/watch?v=PRjzqc2l6Yw&search=new%20super%20mario

http://youtube.com/watch?v=DeZlrs4h6zo&search=new%20super%20mario

watching those makes me feel very nostalgic.

luigi+mario on screen together = 2 player simultaneous wifi action??

inert false cat (sleep), Tuesday, 7 March 2006 20:17 (twenty years ago)

Mario Hulk!

Casuistry (Chris P), Tuesday, 7 March 2006 20:33 (twenty years ago)

Not only that, but players can link wirelessly with a friend to play as Mario and Luigi in multiplayer mode.

that could be a lot of fun

inert false cat (sleep), Tuesday, 7 March 2006 20:53 (twenty years ago)

Can they attack each other?

Casuistry (Chris P), Tuesday, 7 March 2006 20:59 (twenty years ago)

hah i was wondering the same thing. i hope they can, of course.

inert false cat (sleep), Tuesday, 7 March 2006 21:16 (twenty years ago)

Man, I watched those youtube videos and I feel, like, HEARTBROKEN wiht excitement and nostalgia. What is this weird feeling?

antexit (antexit), Tuesday, 7 March 2006 22:16 (twenty years ago)

puberty?

s1ocki (slutsky), Tuesday, 7 March 2006 23:44 (twenty years ago)

Hmm. Well, nobody's going to like what I'm about to say. But the thing is, my first ever mario game was mario 64, I'd never bothered with it before that (pre-N64, I was a PC gamer). And after mrio 64 (which was and still is my favourite game of all time), I played Mario Bros DX on the GBC. And that too was FANTATIC, I absolutely loved it, played it to death. Then I got a GBA, and played the Mario Bros 2 remake on there, and it ws a bit rubbish really, didn't feel like a mario game at all. And then I got the Super Mario World remake, and...pff. Overly complex control system, same old level designs I'd seen before, and too much secret switch/hidden exit faffing. I wasn't grabbed.

And yeah, the new one looks like it's going to follow on from that. So I suppose that's why I'm just not that bothered.

JimD (JimD), Wednesday, 8 March 2006 00:28 (twenty years ago)

i am shocked and appalled.

s1ocki (slutsky), Wednesday, 8 March 2006 00:32 (twenty years ago)

You went...BACKWARDS.

Jordan (Jordan), Wednesday, 8 March 2006 00:35 (twenty years ago)

Man, I watched those youtube videos and I feel, like, HEARTBROKEN wiht excitement and nostalgia. What is this weird feeling?

Exactly! It makes me nostalgic for how excited I was and the pleasure I used to get playing 2D Mario games when they first came out. I don't think playing those old games again will ever give me the same feeling they used to, but the New Mario footage makes that nostalgic part of me think that maybe I CAN get that same feeling again because it's, like, old but new ALL AT THE SAME TIME. But then I simultaneously feel sad because I really doubt it can ever be like it once was. And I also think "Man, I'm old now". And I also think "Why can't I get no satisfaction from killing Goombas and Snifits and making vines grow and bouncing turtles shells against stairs for infinite 1-ups like I could once upon a time?" O NEW MARIO Y U BRAEK HAERT??/

Lingbertt, Wednesday, 8 March 2006 04:50 (twenty years ago)

You're basing your love of classic Mario on SMB2?!

Casuistry (Chris P), Wednesday, 8 March 2006 06:33 (twenty years ago)

Antexit OTM. I got that feeling of excitement that makes you feel nauseous when I first saw the video of it in action. It was the same feeling I got when I first watched The Wizard and saw SMB3 in action and knew I had to have it.

Craig Gilchrist (Craig Gilchrist), Wednesday, 8 March 2006 08:32 (twenty years ago)

It was the same feeling I got when I first watched The Wizard and saw SMB3 in action and knew I had to have it.

I remember this feeling.

A. Lingbert (A. Lingbert), Wednesday, 8 March 2006 08:35 (twenty years ago)

that movie gave the same feeling when you saw the dude using the powerglove, though!

electrogrouse (haitch), Wednesday, 8 March 2006 12:51 (twenty years ago)

First major purchase with my own money was an NES, specifically for Kid Icarus, Metroid and SMB1. I'm currently playing Mario and Luigi. This is the future.

Forksclovetofu (Forksclovetofu), Wednesday, 8 March 2006 17:50 (twenty years ago)

2d Mario : videogames :: Wong Kar-Wai movies about stylish people : cinema

It is always the right choice to get excited about stuff with a past stuffed with perfection. ALWAYS.

James.Cobo (jamescobo), Friday, 10 March 2006 22:22 (twenty years ago)

GOD NOW I HAVE TO BUY A DS

Curt1s St3ph3ns, Saturday, 11 March 2006 17:05 (twenty years ago)

Gosh I cannot wait to buy a DS. But I will wait. Specifically, for the DS Lite.

Will M. (Will M.), Saturday, 11 March 2006 17:41 (twenty years ago)

Mmm, goodness

carson dial (carson dial), Sunday, 12 March 2006 00:08 (twenty years ago)

oh man I never even considered buying a ds and now I have to!!!!?!

teeny (teeny), Sunday, 12 March 2006 13:35 (twenty years ago)

Just beat partners in time; loads o' fun until the final boss(es)... why do developers assume that the final guy MUST be a hairpulling hourlong experience in an otherwise well-balanced and enjoyable game?

Forksclovetofu (Forksclovetofu), Sunday, 12 March 2006 19:47 (twenty years ago)

Oh. Oh yes.

Man, now I have to get a job so I can buy awesome shit. I knew this would happen if I started reading ILG again.

Laura H. (laurah), Monday, 13 March 2006 20:14 (twenty years ago)

Yay Laura!!

why do developers assume that the final guy MUST be a hairpulling hourlong experience in an otherwise well-balanced and enjoyable game?

A friend and I just beat the Warriors, which does exactly the same thing. Dunno why we couldn't just stab him like in the film.

melton mowbray's APOCALYPTO! (adr), Monday, 13 March 2006 20:23 (twenty years ago)

I thought that boss was disappointingly easy, actually! (And it does happen like the movie, more or less, doesn't it?)

antexit (antexit), Tuesday, 14 March 2006 01:11 (twenty years ago)

For unbalanced bosses, see Pokemon Colosseum. I gave up at the final hurdle in that, cos levelling up my monsters enough to beat the last guy would have required an extra two or three hours of battle mountain grinding. Sod that.

JimD (JimD), Tuesday, 14 March 2006 02:38 (twenty years ago)

Maybe it was harder on 2-player mode, or we're just rubbish :) Or maybe the rest of the game was just easier with two people!

melton mowbray's APOCALYPTO! (adr), Tuesday, 14 March 2006 13:31 (twenty years ago)

one month passes...
I think it's time to start anticipating this for real. It's been 16 years since Super Mario World, and finally the true sequel that Mario 64 was NOT is almost here. 13 days away, and I'm pretty goddamn excited.

Laura H. (laurah), Tuesday, 2 May 2006 13:55 (twenty years ago)

another new movie posted to the site:

TOMBOT (TOMBOT), Tuesday, 2 May 2006 14:40 (twenty years ago)

what laura said!!

s1ocki (slutsky), Tuesday, 2 May 2006 14:45 (twenty years ago)

It seems too simple to really wow me. Like, no crazy flying areas in levels. This is step back to SMB1.

JW (ex machina), Tuesday, 2 May 2006 16:20 (twenty years ago)

it is of course typical nintendo practice to show you all the most exciting shit in the game in the first two demo clips.

TOMBOT (TOMBOT), Tuesday, 2 May 2006 16:23 (twenty years ago)

i AM wondering about like capes and stuff

s1ocki (slutsky), Tuesday, 2 May 2006 16:56 (twenty years ago)

NO TANOOKI, NO CRED

JW (ex machina), Tuesday, 2 May 2006 17:11 (twenty years ago)

New clip refers to Mario as being 25 years old => This is meant as nostalgia.

If this is SMB1, the humble and almost clumsy everyman working joe on a mission has been replaced by some sort of ninja gymnast plumber, apparently.

Casuistry (Chris P), Tuesday, 2 May 2006 20:35 (twenty years ago)

Whoever was controlling him had some serious stones to climb along that rope just in front of a Bullet Bill!

c(''c) (Leee), Tuesday, 2 May 2006 20:47 (twenty years ago)

i think i must justify owning this. Loverly.
And simple is the point, methinks. Back to the future.

s1ocki (slutsky), Monday, 8 May 2006 19:15 (twenty years ago)

Apple + Nintendo should both be taking the wraps of their other new products tomorrow. Read lots of E3 coverage. Mother 3 and DQ Rocket Slime localizations are on the way too!

It's coming out in a week?

But the DS Lite isn't coming out for a month. :(

Jordan (Jordan), Monday, 8 May 2006 20:55 (twenty years ago)

As I said upthread, I'm maybe the only nintendo fanboy in the world who isn't excited about this, but the prospect of multiplayer minigames has swung it for me, I want it too now.

JimD (JimD), Monday, 8 May 2006 23:45 (twenty years ago)

it's gonna be $27.99 at Circuit City.

Christopher Costello (CGC), Tuesday, 9 May 2006 01:48 (twenty years ago)

Sort or 'Splode

YOUR HEAD A SPLODE!

Casuistry (Chris P), Tuesday, 9 May 2006 02:10 (twenty years ago)

I'm like Jim except I was never really into SM64, I had a PlayStation for about 5 years before I borrowed a N64. I'd already seen like a dozen 3D platformers by then, so my reaction was "Eh, running's too slidey and the camera is rubbish"

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Tuesday, 9 May 2006 05:02 (twenty years ago)

Ok, it's release day, so lets get this started. Anyone got this yet? I've been playing it since Saturday when the t0rr3nt was released. It's pretty damned great. Not offering too much in terms of difficulty, but I don't mind as it's entertaining me plenty.

Also, it looks pretty big, and feels perfect to play. Still just getting to grips with it, but loving all the little details like clouds and snow compressing under your feet as you run, wierd wobbling mushroom platforms and getting used to the new powerups.

Craig Gilchrist (Craig Gilchrist), Monday, 15 May 2006 15:01 (twenty years ago)

You lied to me, Amazon UK. You lied to me.

Suedey (John Cei Douglas), Monday, 15 May 2006 16:10 (twenty years ago)

I've been playing it since Saturday when the t0rr3nt was released.

Wait, people download DS games? Do you use a flash card thingy, or are there emus around?

JimD (JimD), Monday, 15 May 2006 16:32 (twenty years ago)

OK so who thinks Best Buy might actually have this today? I'm about to find out.

TOMBOT (TOMBOT), Monday, 15 May 2006 20:11 (twenty years ago)

It's stupidly hot here today and my brain doesn't function and I suspect I won't be writing my paper after all so I suppose I might get this after all!

HOW DO I SHOT MARIO (CANNON)

zappi (joni), Monday, 15 May 2006 23:11 (twenty years ago)

Our BestBuy said not 'til Tuesday when we were in there this weekend buying a camera.

Jaq (Jaq), Monday, 15 May 2006 23:15 (twenty years ago)

Is that how this works? I've never tried to buy a game so close to release date. They get shipped from Nintendo on realease day and don't arrive in stores for days? Weird.

¯\(º_o)/¯ (Chris Piuma), Monday, 15 May 2006 23:19 (twenty years ago)

I don't know - we are maybe in no-man's-land.

Jaq (Jaq), Monday, 15 May 2006 23:29 (twenty years ago)

I got the 2nd to last copy on the shelves. I am the greatest husband ever.

TOMBOT (TOMBOT), Tuesday, 16 May 2006 00:54 (twenty years ago)

Congrats; they wouldn't let me touch it yet. I'll be picking up mine on the way in to work tomorrow.

Forksclovetofu (Forksclovetofu), Tuesday, 16 May 2006 01:10 (twenty years ago)

TUESDAY... TOMORROW... ARGH

s1ocki (slutsky), Tuesday, 16 May 2006 02:07 (twenty years ago)

THIS GAME IS THE BEST.

THE.

BEST.

Except I keep dying on this one boss now cos I don't have the fire, fuckin Nintendo ;_;

Allyzay Rofflesbot (allyzay), Tuesday, 16 May 2006 02:53 (twenty years ago)

I could theoretically go back a couple boards and get the fire but fuck that, no linear no credibility.

Allyzay Rofflesbot (allyzay), Tuesday, 16 May 2006 02:53 (twenty years ago)

Wait, people download DS games? Do you use a flash card thingy, or are there emus around?

Yeah, I've got one of those M3 SD movieplayer things. It's for playing movie's, MP3's and homebrew games on your DS, and just so happens to play roms.

HOW DO I SHOT MARIO (CANNON)

Yeah, these are really starting to piss me off. I see them everywhere, and I'm sure they're the only way to get to some worlds (Still can't get to world 4...), and I've no idea how to use them or find them. Then again, with Mario 3 I wouldn't have known how to find whistles if I hadn't seen The Wizard before playing it. Nintendo needs to make another movie to help me.

Craig Gilchrist (Craig Gilchrist), Tuesday, 16 May 2006 06:37 (twenty years ago)

It's pouring out, but I must brave the rain for SMB goodness.

Laurah (laurah), Tuesday, 16 May 2006 22:48 (twenty years ago)

wow. some of the best level design i've ever seen.

adam (adam), Wednesday, 17 May 2006 01:52 (twenty years ago)

it's so sad that i've been to sick to go out and get this game when all i want to do is play this game because i am home sick!!

s1ocki (slutsky), Wednesday, 17 May 2006 02:15 (twenty years ago)

Okay this game is one giant joyous WTF so far.

James.Cobo (jamescobo), Wednesday, 17 May 2006 04:48 (twenty years ago)

So far, I'm enjoying it a ton. So far, my suckiness at this sort of game hasn't been much of an issue. You can always go back and grab a few more one-ups!

¯\(º_o)/¯ (Chris Piuma), Wednesday, 17 May 2006 05:09 (twenty years ago)

Woman at big box store where I bought it this afternoon: "That's the second one I've sold today, it must be popular!"

Me: "Well, it did just come out yesterday...", hoping the rest was clear.

¯\(º_o)/¯ (Chris Piuma), Wednesday, 17 May 2006 05:10 (twenty years ago)

I suck balls at platformers, guys!
Ally seems to like it, though.

TOMBOT (TOMBOT), Wednesday, 17 May 2006 13:00 (twenty years ago)

Guy at video game store gave me ten minute monologue about how cool it was before trying to get me to preorder nuzelda.

It's really fuckin' good after twenty minutes of play and I've only gotten to world 2.

Forksclovetofu (Forksclovetofu), Wednesday, 17 May 2006 18:08 (twenty years ago)

I finally made it to World 3 but I'm missing a lot of World 2 coins.

¯\(º_o)/¯ (Chris Piuma), Wednesday, 17 May 2006 21:35 (twenty years ago)

i'm jumping between 4 and 5, also missing a lot of coins, and still have no idea how to get to lots of places on the earlier world maps (i like this).

sleep (sleep), Wednesday, 17 May 2006 21:47 (twenty years ago)

I found a pipe that I'm certain will lead me to something pretty great in World 5, but I need that blue shell powerup. I'm brimming with anticipation.

Craig Gilchrist (Craig Gilchrist), Thursday, 18 May 2006 06:23 (twenty years ago)

I can't even get the blue shell powerup to work really. I made it to World 5 but now World 4 yet.

¯\(º_o)/¯ (Chris Piuma), Thursday, 18 May 2006 09:16 (twenty years ago)

i finally got it thx to the good offices of one mr. antexit... whatta friend.

anyway i'm lovin' it although i'm worried it's a bit too easy. i'm pacing myself so i don't blow through the game in a couple of days. also... i'm sad about the lack of YOSHI and FLYING, what is up with that?

s1ocki (slutsky), Thursday, 18 May 2006 14:16 (twenty years ago)

i'm pacing myself so i don't blow through the game in a couple of days.

Sigh, this is pretty much every nintendo game for the last five years, isn't it?

JimD (JimD), Thursday, 18 May 2006 14:18 (twenty years ago)

Mario World was easy too.

Suedey (John Cei Douglas), Thursday, 18 May 2006 14:21 (twenty years ago)

not this easy, i don't think? and wasn't it a lot bigger or is that just me? the levels themselves seemed larger.

s1ocki (slutsky), Thursday, 18 May 2006 14:52 (twenty years ago)

Sigh, this is pretty much every nintendo game for the last five years, isn't it?

animal crossing kept me gathering and re-sellign fruit for an alarmingly long period of time! i can't really go near it anymore though.

s1ocki (slutsky), Thursday, 18 May 2006 14:53 (twenty years ago)

the 99 lives turtle shell trick works in world 2-4, just like the original SMB!

Who are you people that blow through a game in a couple of days? Do you not have jobs and television and magazines?

TOMBOT (TOMBOT), Thursday, 18 May 2006 15:23 (twenty years ago)

Mario Sunshine was really hard!

Gravel Puzzleworth (Gregory Henry), Thursday, 18 May 2006 16:00 (twenty years ago)

i hated the controls in mario sunshine! well just the way you used the hose i found to be a continual frustration

s1ocki (slutsky), Thursday, 18 May 2006 16:08 (twenty years ago)

what is this Tele-Vision xxpost

smw was fairly easy, so is this. smw was pretty expansive though; this is certainly a bit smaller in scale.

sleep (sleep), Thursday, 18 May 2006 16:11 (twenty years ago)

No job! I am supposed to draw pictures at home! It's not like when I was 12 and had to go to school and stuff. Generally I beat games in two days or something, which is good, because if games were longer I would go mad and never leave the house - and I forget to do that often enough as it is.

I panic about new Zelda games and stuff, because I know I'll play it for a week solid or something crazy like that. HOW CAN YOU LEAVE A GAME UNFINISHED OH GOD

Suedey (John Cei Douglas), Thursday, 18 May 2006 16:34 (twenty years ago)

I keep getting mad because my copy of this hasnt shipped yet, I feel like I need to complete it before I can do anything.

Suedey (John Cei Douglas), Thursday, 18 May 2006 16:36 (twenty years ago)

Who are you people that blow through a game in a couple of days? Do you not have jobs and television and magazines?

I have 1337 skillz.

It's true though, sunshine was tricky. And zeldas last more than a couple of days too, I guess. And metroids, probably. But pikmin/luigimansion/1080/waverace/mkdd/mkds/wariowares/kirbyds/etc etc...all have been finished in hardly any time at all, for me, and I find it pretty painful cos they were ALL nice, fun games that I would've happily played for weeks on end, had it been possible.

JimD (JimD), Thursday, 18 May 2006 16:48 (twenty years ago)

I tend to think the opposite, "LEAVE ME ALONE DAMN YOU GAME, WHY WONT YOU SET ME FREE OF YOUR EVIL HOLD AAAARGH!"

Suedey (John Cei Douglas), Thursday, 18 May 2006 16:53 (twenty years ago)

The multiplayer is really, really, really fun.

adam (adam), Thursday, 18 May 2006 20:08 (twenty years ago)

if games were longer I would go mad and never leave the house - and I forget to do that often enough as it is.

I've been trying to word this for AGES! I went out of my way and spent a tenner more to buy the Cube version of Res Evil 4 instead of the PS2 one, just because I wanted LESS GAME for my money. It's much more fun to charge through a game in a couple of days, then do it again, than it is to never finish it.

I realise I sound like I'm talking in opposites like on the Wii thread, but I swear I'm completely serious. I like to feel like I've mastered games inside out.

re: the no job thing, we should play some wifi sometime. I'm basically free all day every day if you fancy a Mario Kart/Animal Crossing/Tetris.

melton mowbray's APOCALYPTO! (adr), Thursday, 18 May 2006 23:16 (twenty years ago)

That first castle in world 5... so good... so hard... so fun.

also, anyone know how to get the fireworks at the end of a stage? my Super Mario Bros. Memories tell a 7 at the end of the seconds was good, but I can only manage to get 1 firework in this New SMB.

brontosaur (brontosaur), Friday, 19 May 2006 15:31 (twenty years ago)

fireworks : finish with clock at *11 for 1, *22 for 2 etc

zappi (joni), Friday, 19 May 2006 17:19 (twenty years ago)

thanks!

brontosaur (brontosaur), Friday, 19 May 2006 19:28 (twenty years ago)

HOLY SHIT I JUST FOUND MY FIRST CANNON

James.Cobo (jamescobo), Saturday, 20 May 2006 04:21 (twenty years ago)

Also, I keep wishing they'd made use of the rumble pak somehow - I bet the controls would feel a whole lot less slippery with a little tactile feedback.

also this game is fucking AWESOME. I've even enjoyed the swimming levels so far, which is a first to say the least.

James.Cobo (jamescobo), Saturday, 20 May 2006 04:28 (twenty years ago)

Ugh, I haven't. Right now I'm at one of the World 6 levels and those green fish-things are totally annoying me.

I've found two cannons but both of them lead to World 5, which is not helpful!

Casuistry (Chris P), Saturday, 20 May 2006 05:19 (twenty years ago)

So, are the cannons just available via alternative/hidden routes to finish levels? And I'm just too stupid to find them?

Wall jumping is awesome. Those terrible moments when you push pause and realize you've misjudged and you're definitely going to fall down the pit? Not always the end of the story anymore. I wall-jumped my way out of certain doom last night and totally felt like I'd cheated death.

I can't beat the caterpillar boss as mini-Mario to get to World 4. :(

remy (x Jeremy), Saturday, 20 May 2006 19:13 (twenty years ago)

World 5, surely.

I found a cannon to World 8 but seriously I cannot get to Worlds 4 or 7. Harrumpf.

Casuistry (Chris P), Saturday, 20 May 2006 20:06 (twenty years ago)

no, world 4!

you have to beat the boss of world 2 as little dude.

which i just did!

s1ocki (slutsky), Saturday, 20 May 2006 21:46 (twenty years ago)

Oh well how the hell are you supposed to figure that one out? Jesus H. Fuckchrist.

I'm midway through sneaky World 8. Does anyone know, if you beat the final board, do you still get to wander around the other levels?

Casuistry (Chris P), Sunday, 21 May 2006 01:59 (twenty years ago)

yes. you can save any time you want as well.

you know you can still do the midair downwards stomp as minimario, remy?

zappi (joni), Sunday, 21 May 2006 05:01 (twenty years ago)

OK, now I have done it.

What do you mean you can save any time you want? I have been saving up those "passage for 5 big coins" for save points.

Casuistry (Chris P), Sunday, 21 May 2006 06:36 (twenty years ago)

after you finish world 8 you can save pretty much anywhere via the start button

Right, you can't play this one long distance.

Mario + Luigi mode is ridiculous fun. I don't like the minigames as much, but I've only tried a few. Are any of them good?

Allyzay Rofflesbot (allyzay), Monday, 22 May 2006 20:43 (twenty years ago)

You might want to hold on to, say, a blue shell until you find an odd passage blocked off in nearby levels.

I just beat the main dude! That next to last tower was frustrating. Now to go back and finish World 6 and open up World 7 and then decide whether I want to bother trying to find more big coins...

s1ocki (slutsky), Tuesday, 30 May 2006 15:34 (nineteen years ago)

If you want to beat and discard, I agree; but REALLY beating the thing, i.e. finding every coin, looks like a bit of a job.

Forksclovetofu (Forksclovetofu), Tuesday, 30 May 2006 20:02 (nineteen years ago)

This game is like a sugar rush holy shit!!! So fun and addictive but also very draining - too much color and action thrown at me at once. Lots of clever puzzles though.

Curt1s St3ph3ns, Tuesday, 30 May 2006 20:42 (nineteen years ago)

I have only maybe a dozen coins left, though! And a few passages to huts or cannons.

I'm not sure it's "too easy" but it might be "too small"!

Casuistry (Chris P), Wednesday, 31 May 2006 01:09 (nineteen years ago)

I agree, the clever level design is really what brings this game from good to excellent for me.

FINALLY I HAVE ARRIVED

I think I have realised I secretly hate games, and merely have to beat them because of some strange OCD.

I have all the worlds unlocked, and I have still managed to do things that weren't playing this gme today. Nice. I think I actually spent most of my time trying to unlock cannons and whatnot and beating bosses as mini mario. The thing I've found most annoying is trying to get the right power ups for specific things...

Suedey (John Cei Douglas), Tuesday, 6 June 2006 22:33 (nineteen years ago)

Man, I love this game, but I've been making some suck-ass moves. First I just fucking around in world 5 and I accidentally saved when I was really low on lives. Then I found the cannon to world 8 (sweet), and saved before realizing that I couldn't shoot back to world 5. I guess I have to go beat the game now, if only so I can fucking save whenever I want.

Jordan (Jordan), Friday, 16 June 2006 02:54 (nineteen years ago)

What are you talking about? Just tap on the World 5 (or better yet, World 1, stomp through Level 1, get some extra lives via Super Huge Mario) on the screen to transport there. Doesn't it say that on the screen?

Casuistry (Chris P), Friday, 16 June 2006 04:16 (nineteen years ago)

Oh, you mean there are two screens on this thing? I'm retarded.

Yeah, I haven't tried doing that yet, I figured I would go back and clean up the stuff I missed after beating the game.

how does everyone feel about this, some time after it's actually come out?

does it belong in the pantheon or was it a failed effort to recapture 2d mario glory?

me, i liked it ok, but found it a little short, and short on surprises/secrets/fun stuff to explore. and now, however long since i've played it - a year or 2 or 3? - i can barely remember a single level.

banned, on the run (s1ocki), Wednesday, 21 October 2009 17:20 (sixteen years ago)

all i remember is not being able to make it through stages as tiny mario to get to the part where you needed to use the tininess squeeze in somewhere. but i also remember loving it.

Ømår Littel (Jordan), Wednesday, 21 October 2009 18:13 (sixteen years ago)

me, i liked it ok, but found it a little short, and short on surprises/secrets/fun stuff to explore. and now, however long since i've played it - a year or 2 or 3? - i can barely remember a single level.

I concur with every word of this although I liked it enough to %100 it (and I never %100 games). it really could have used more suits. on the plus side it looks like NSMBWii will be addressing every one of these complaints and therefore I expect it to own in a most aggressive fashion.

okamadablobisney (jamescobo), Wednesday, 21 October 2009 18:29 (sixteen years ago)

yup, I agree with both of you 100%

coz (webinar), Wednesday, 21 October 2009 21:41 (sixteen years ago)

I think there's some definitely some retrospective regret that this game really wasn't the direct followup to SMB3 that it was advertised... definitely not enough suits and distinct worlds. That said, I also 100%'d it, so it was definitely worthwhile. Still I'd lower my expectations for NSMB Wii. (Never raise your expecations for anything!)

Nhex, Thursday, 22 October 2009 04:09 (sixteen years ago)

I thought of it as a remake of SMB1 -- limited powerups, bowser (jr) at the end of every world, all left-to-right stages, etc. I sold it after getting 100%.

abanana, Thursday, 22 October 2009 11:43 (sixteen years ago)

I really enjoyed it at the time, but found it largely very easy (apart from, as mentioned upthread, trying to get to the end of levels as tiny Mario - mostly due to the space jumping physics when you're wee). I've tried playing it since - the yardstick of a great Mario game, and just couldn't really get into it again. Meanwhile I can still pick up SMB3 or SMWorld and play through them world-by-world and enjoy it.

Hoping for something great from NSMBWii but, like others, not getting my hopes too high.

4 player coop sounds amazing (if you play as Yoshi you can eat other players). Is it nuts to consider getting a Wii this late in its game?

Euler, Friday, 6 November 2009 06:59 (sixteen years ago)

The one review I've read actually said they didn't really care for the multiplayer, but loved the single player. The complaint seemed to be that while the 4 player was fine for a lark, it was just too chaotic and frustrating to try to make any kind of progress, that it just didn't flow. That kind of reminds me of my experience with LittleBigPlanet, where anything with more than two players just got too busy. Just one person's opinion though... http://www.computerandvideogames.com/article.php?id=226725

Now is a great time to get a Wii as the price has come down, and there's a small but excellent library of games available. Also Sin and Punishment 2 and Capcom vs Tatsunoko are both set to be released early in 2010

Jeff LeVine, Friday, 6 November 2009 07:42 (sixteen years ago)

The recently released A Boy and His Blob re-imagining is also a very good 2d puzzle / platformer

Jeff LeVine, Friday, 6 November 2009 07:51 (sixteen years ago)

I probably won't be in the market until next summer but yeah, I'm intrigued by the catalog.

Euler, Friday, 6 November 2009 08:16 (sixteen years ago)

The nice thing about waiting till summer 2010 would be you would probably know if Wii HD / Wii 2 is coming out in the fall or not

Jeff LeVine, Friday, 6 November 2009 15:18 (sixteen years ago)

haha, good point there

Nhex, Friday, 6 November 2009 15:22 (sixteen years ago)

is there really the slightest chance in hell nintendo is going to put out a new platform next year?

banned, on the run (s1ocki), Friday, 6 November 2009 15:29 (sixteen years ago)

My feeling is it will be 2011, but who knows. I could definitely see Nintendo doing a refresh of the Wii in 2010, similiar to their DS strategy. Basically a new, slightly more expensive Wii that will be capable of displaying games in HD and will include a new motion plus controller as standard (with the current two piece system combined into one). Would go perfect with a HD new Super Mario Galaxy 2, for example (I'd buy one). It does seem like with both the 360 getting a Natal based refresh and the PS3 adding Wii-like motion controls, Nintendo might feel like they have to do somethinbg to keep people excited about their system.

Jeff LeVine, Friday, 6 November 2009 15:38 (sixteen years ago)

right. nintendo just moves so slow i'd think we'd have heard about it already if it was going to happen in 2k10. don't get me wrong, i would totally finally buy a wii if that were to happen!

banned, on the run (s1ocki), Friday, 6 November 2009 15:50 (sixteen years ago)

These days it seems like they like to keep their cards close though, doesn't it? We only heard about both DSi and DS XL a few months before they were to be released. That's why I think come E3 or summer there's still a possibility they may announce a refresh of their hardware, but also why I feel like, if by then they haven't, it'll be pretty safe to assume it's not coming until at least 2011.

Jeff LeVine, Friday, 6 November 2009 16:02 (sixteen years ago)

Just imagine how huge it would be if at E3 2010 Nintendo announces they're releasing an enhanced / premium Wii with HD output and an improved controller that includes better motion plus and a wireless nunchuck. Also HD versions of Super Mario Galaxy 2, HD Zelda and HD Nintendodogs & cats. It doesn't seem impossible to me.

Sorry for the derail

Jeff LeVine, Friday, 6 November 2009 16:49 (sixteen years ago)

no i would be into that!

banned, on the run (s1ocki), Friday, 6 November 2009 17:05 (sixteen years ago)

that's quite the wishlist! i don't know though. let's say they are doing this. and they've already told developers this will exist (unlikely since it def. would've leaked by now). that means except for nintendo's own output, no major third party games to take advantage of until late 2011/2012. at that point a PS4/X720 could well be out or announced. since nintendo is still on top i don't know if they want to undercut themselves by shooting early, that hasn't worked for the last few console generations. (this assumes of course there isn't a "real" Wii successor coming out soon after, if they're bother to do Wii HD)

not really related, but i just don't get how nintendo has the same third party output problems with the Wii that it did with the Gamecube. Especially when they're doing great with the DS!

Nhex, Friday, 6 November 2009 17:13 (sixteen years ago)

Yeah, I'm hardly convinced myself, I just don't feel like it's impossible (and it would be smart!). It will be quite sad for Nintendo if they head into fall 2010 just announcing a couple of games for the wii vitality sensor :(

Euler, Friday, 6 November 2009 17:22 (sixteen years ago)

solid gold wii imo: Klonoa, Tiger Woods 2010, Little King's Story, Okami, Punch-Out!!, Resident Evil 4: Wii Edition, Resident Evil, Resident Evil 0, Fire Emblem: Radiant Dawn, Pro Evolution Soccer 2010, House of the Dead: Overkill, NPC! Pikmin 2, NPC! Chibi-Robo, No More Heroes, Animal Crossing: City Folk, Metroid Prime: Trilogy, Mad World, Bit.trip series, Super Paper Mario, Zack & Wiki, A Boy & his Blob, Dead Space: Extraction, Muramasa: The Demon Blade, You, Me & the Cubes

upcoming: Metroid: Other M, Tatsunoko vs. Capcom, Silent Hill: Shattered Memories, No More Heroes: Desperate Struggle, Fragile, Dragon Quest X, Monster Hunter Tri, Red Steel 2, New Super Mario Bros. Wii, Super Mario Galaxy 2, No More Heroes 2, Sin & Punishment 2, Epic Mickey, Illvelo,
Fatal Frame IV (fan translated), Pikmin 3

coz (webinar), Friday, 6 November 2009 18:16 (sixteen years ago)

Super Paper Mario was rad; my mom lol has a wii and over a Christmas break a couple of years ago I played that mf pretty much day/night. Maybe she'll let me have the wii; I'm sure that I played it more in that three day binge than she's played it since.

also I want Punch-Out so badly

maybe it's bc I don't play very frequently but I just can't get w/the controls. way too sluggish for a mario game.

original bgm, Saturday, 24 April 2010 17:06 (sixteen years ago)

The floaty, slow imprecision of the jumps really kinda dogs it. Seems like it was intentional to suit the multiplayer aspect of the game, where it does work (in the crazy contradictory/competitive sense).

Nhex, Saturday, 24 April 2010 17:08 (sixteen years ago)

yeah, "imprecise" is exactly the right word. I die a lot in this game and it often doesn't feel like it's my fault.

it's a shame because the level design is often pretty inventive but the game is just not that much fun bc of the controls.

mario had floaty jumping? don't ever play littlebigplanet then

aztec gamera (zappi), Saturday, 24 April 2010 19:01 (sixteen years ago)

The DS version had it too, but it didn't feel quite as sluggish. I most definitely like these games, but it's all part of a distinct, plushier feel to the games - I don't want to say "less hardcore" because the game can still have challenging difficulty, but it's definitely away from the general speed of both play and repetitive death from the originals. Even the music styles support this atmosphere. A strange fallback from converting the 3D Marios in reverse to 2D again.

In particular one of the things I wasn't ever able to get a hold of, but seems like an important thing I'm missing, is the technique where you start running - it feels very slow - and when Mario has accelerated enough, do multiple pinpoint successive spinning jumps. Sometimes the levels seem to be designed for this super high risk technique to be used, and other times it feels like you are forced to just tiptoe through.

Nhex, Saturday, 24 April 2010 20:30 (sixteen years ago)

Even the new Wii game had the "floaty" jumping! I'm glad to hear someone else mention it, because all my friends acted like I was crazy when I complained about the weird looseness of the controls.

I am only 3 levels in (and I've played some of level 5) but the "floatyness" hasn't got to me and I never thought about it until I've seen it mentioned here. Floatyness could be a pester during boss battles but I'm sure the difficulty in this game is just fine (maybe a bit easy? - I can't say for sure yet). But Luigi or Princess Toadstool in Super Mario 2 would definitely win in a floatyness competition.

It's not just that the jumps are floaty, but the whole physics and inertia of running, jumping, and landing feels really weird - like how when you start running, Mario is like a tub of butter on ice, and it seems to take just a bit too long to be fast enough to jump forward - similarly, when you land. You can get used to it eventually, but it definitely doesn't have that click to it that SMB3 and SMW have.

You should try Kid Kool on a NES emulator to feel the most messed up running/jumping controls ever... I used to own the game and I still like it but woo-wee

fwiw, I didn't have too much of an issue w/the controls until the game got a bit harder.

three years pass...

So I am playing Super Mario RPG, which is a really fun game and lives up to the hype. But it's kind of strange because it is the first 3D Mario game (complete with jump mechanics) and also the first CGI-rendered Mario game. At times it feels proto-Super Mario 3D World.

I am wondering why Nintendo doesn't just make a Super Mario Bros. CGI movie. The cutscenes (hell, the gameplay even) are already up there w big budget CGI cartoons imho. Plus an official movie that wasn't live action but actually made by Nintendo would be guaranteed nostalgia money, would have tons of marketing/cross-promotion potential, etc. Nintendo is shooting itself in the foot every minute that goes by and there is not a SMB movie in production.
