Oh yeah, I keep forgetting about the virtual console thing. But the problem there is pricing, I think. It looks like it's going to cost me more to download the old games than it is to pick up 2nd hand copies. Which doesn't really make sense, to me.
I mean, it's not that I don't want a wii. I do, and eventually I'm sure I'll get one, becuase there's no way I'm missing Super Mario Galaxy, apart from anything else. But I paid over-the-odds early adopter prices for both my GC and my DS, and in retrospect I didn't get much out of it. I could have had exactly the same amount of fun for a lot less money, if I'd been a bit less eager. So I'm going to wait, this time round.

There's no release date yet, but one of the Nintendo dudes said at a recent press conference that they will be making an announcement "in September" in which they are going to confirm the release date and release price. They also confirmed they're gonna be selling the console at a loss, which I think is a first for Nintendo. Dunno if that means the price will be lower than has been hinted at so far...

You should be able to spend them on the emulation profile R&D. So someday it might work.At all.
Microsoft is aweful, and their system will not be very successful.Sony might just nearly go out of business because of the PS3.
I think the only reason they haven't pulled out, thrown their hands up in defeat and apologised is they have SEVERE financial commitments to IBM, the laser makers who've now most likely offered a discount, and various other suppliers.EVERY press release now is just Sony trying to keep their stock from plummeting further.I bet the Execs are selling what they can, stateside at least.
I'm so glad to see them going down.Hated that company since '98. EVERY discman I bought died.

The Euro price, after all, currently equates to nearly £170, whereas the US price comes out at less than £135, which is a game-price of a difference.
But you're right, it does look like being damned good fun, and that's all that matters.

Whereas the Wii(because I DOO want to stay on topic, but people keep DRAGGING THIS OUT AND INSULTING ME) has full backward compatability with 4 generations and at least 5 branches of gaming.
The Wii will own, the 360 will keep American gamers dazzled, and the PS3 will go down as the system that came too early or the Neo Geo of this generation(if Sony stays solvent).I can hardly wait for the Wii. It's everything that gamers like me and my friends have been waiting for a system that puts GAMES back in video games.

About soccer! * Tennis: Simple but effective volley action. * Urban Champion: An early, and not particularly good, brawler. * Wario's Woods: A falling-block puzzle game starring Wario. * Baseball: Yet another early NES sports game. * Solomon's Key: A surprisingly difficult puzzle-action game.

I'm surprised at the poor quality of NES titles available. I mean, take Zelda and DK from the list and what is left? Pinball? Urban champion??There is a general public without emulators who haven't played NES Super Mario since Ever, and they will pay money for it! Don't try selling them 10 sports games and a crap tetris. nintendo fools!
HOWEVER every genesis game is pure gold (except maybe, er, Ristar (Ristar??)). I guess someone else chose these. Someone with Class.
Again: Gunstar heroes! i would buy a Wii just for this. And i own it anyway!!
― Slumpman (Slump Man), Wednesday, 1 November 2006 23:24 (nineteen years ago)
Ristar's got some great music though! So does every Megadrive game in that list though. Was that the deciding factor?

In fact, I am yet to decide if there's a killer MUST HAVE game to justify me buying one immediately - both Trauma Centre and Cooking Mama I have on the DS, I'm still happy with Animal Crossing on the GC, bothrd re racing/stealth/war games, Elebits looks cool but not £200 worth of cool. And there's always Pokémon, but am more happy with that on the old handheld anyway. Downloading games of course looks great, but it's depressing they're region specific unless you get round it by buying an American wii, connecting to the US shops and so on (I guess - and I'm not dorky enough to go through all the BOTHER). AND AND there's no dvd playback for the first consoles released...
So I don't think I will be getting one unless I come into some money. Why not send me some!

― The GZeus (The GZeus), Thursday, 2 November 2006 13:33 (nineteen years ago)
A big reason the NES was a success it got non-gamers to game(remember it came out after the crash). The controllers were the best at the time, the light gun game(ONE GAME that I know of, but EVERYONE has it) was fun, and if you were rich(by my standards at the time) you even had the mat that you ran in place on and looked like a jackass then lost the olympics. All while smiling.
The Wiimote shall do two things for non-gamers. One, get them to think "What's this?" and pick it up.Two, get them moving around. I find many non-gamers think gaming is lame because it's non-physical(yeah, burning all the sugar in my brain, and getting forearm strain trying to control the guy in Lords of Thunder at Hard level on the second to last level isn't physical...). now they'll (just like that silly mat or DDR) see and feel that games are indeed fun. Some people need physical motion to get their blood and adrenaline pumping.

1. OK seriously I'd almost forgotten about backwards compatibility with the Gamecube in the midst of everything else. I forgot that that is a feature that rules.
2. If Square/Enix/Taito do not sign off on the rights to let Nintendo have their classics for the virtual console, I am going to compare them unfavorably to Paul Bremer.

And the TG-16 is great if you like FUN games like action and Shmups.
If you want RPGs and fancy deep gameplay, you have to go to Turbo Duo/CD or CDROM2. Even then it's really just awesome action games.
I love Shmups. Thus, I'll be getting a full-on PC-Engine and CD setup when I get to Japan, and loading up on cheap HuCards and CDs.not to mention Mega CDs...
In any case, I'm excited about these games.

There's greater amount of video ram and overall processing power, but it's compatibl with the GC games(obviously).
And the ability to control a FPS without fiddling with three directional controls and 10 buttons isn't a gimmick. It's brilliant.
I can't wait untl someone makes a Shmup that's controlled with the Wiimote.

Excite Truck allows you to listen to your personal MP3 music files during the game. By inserting an SD Card into your Wii console, you can choose the music you want to hear.
How to Select Music Tracks1. Insert your SD Card into the Wii console.
2. Begin or continue a game and enter any race. Before the race begins, press + on the Wii Remote to access the Sound Options screen.
3. Select the "SD Card" option.
4. Any MP3 files available on your SD Card will be displayed (100 songs maximum). To choose a specific song for the race you are about to enter, highlight that song. You can also choose to randomize all songs shown for that course. Highlighting "Default" will play the standard in-game music.
5. Press 1 to return to the Sound Options menu, then 1 again to return to the pre-race screen. You can also use the "Sound" command at any point during the race to change the current song.

we'll see, but seriously don't underestimate how bad publishers feel burned by their experiences w/n64 and GameCube.

I am sad that Red Steel is apparently shitty, though. Even sadder that apparently GC games (specifically Killer7 and RE4) are not Wiimote-compatible.

have to say that mario kart wii is really terrible compared to classic mario kart the wheel is such a waste of time and it exposes the shitty wii-mote controls which make the game 1000% less fun and the maps are just jacks of classics. total nintendo cash grab fuck mario kart wii
not counting amazing PS2 ports like RE4 and dokapon kingdom would rep for zelda, super paper mario and ghost squad
― delicate mouse tune, crash of cat chords (Lamp), Sunday, 28 December 2008 03:40 (seventeen years ago)
I don't totally get what people are complaining about with Mario Kart Wii, but then I tried the Wiimote/Wheel controls for like 5 minutes before switching back to the Gamecube pad. What did people want more out of it? Better/more stages and old style boosting?
Same questions for Brawl, which was also fun. They're both pretty much iterative versions of the old games, which were good to begin with, plus some halfassed online additions (though I'd give Brawl some more credit overall).
― Nhex, Sunday, 28 December 2008 04:37 (seventeen years ago)
The online part of mario kart is about all I play / HUGE plus for me. Endless challenge and fun. Just went back last night and played some Mario Kart 64, which I used to love, and it's still great, but people are looking back at that stuff with rose colored glasses - the game has come a looong way. Never played the gamecube or ds version, so I can't compare to those, but compared to 64 the track design is amazing, especially the remade tracks like rainbow road - going back to play those old ones feels so incredibly plain now. There's just so much more variety to the races now, that's what I like about it, more strategy and action. I also don't use the wheel, but do use the wii remote + nunchuck, which works quite well for me.
― Jeff LeVine, Sunday, 28 December 2008 04:55 (seventeen years ago)
i was goofily semi-trolling earlier which fell flat, obv. i'm not a huge mario kart wii fan although playing with the classic controller is a good tip and i appreciate the online play. only problem there is that half the time ppl want to play rainbow road which is my least favorite course. part of it is that kart and brawl aren't games i'd play by myself, even online, and i'm probably not as attuned to the improvements from the 64 versions

Loving the Wii versh of Bully right now. Will continue to plough a lonely furrow for Endless Ocean, too.

Wii Sports, Mario Kart, Mario Galaxy (tho I think I've realised I don't enjoy the tweeness of Zelda games much anymore)
Honourable mentions: Twilight Princess, Tiger Woods.
But seriously judging by what I've played to date the Xbox 360 has limitless amounts of good games, like the PS1 or PS2, more than you could ever have the time to buy/play. And you aren't forced to play ultra twee cuddlestein mountain games.

Serious Games for Serious Gamers that play Serious Games!
I on the other hand am on Galaxy, Wii Fit, Princess, Metroid (is anyone else playing this at all? It's kind of amazingly beautiful and satisfying 24/7), and looking forward to No More Heroes.
― Andrew Farrell, Thursday, 1 January 2009 17:34 (seventeen years ago)
Metroid really is pretty awesome, although the boss battles drag like a Fassbinder movie. it's totally worth it just for how amazingly well the game itself controls, though.
― jamescobo, Thursday, 1 January 2009 20:02 (seventeen years ago)
Got stuck on some boss battle about half way through and never went back to it. Couldn't stand how many times you had to shoot those guys.
― Jeff LeVine, Thursday, 1 January 2009 20:09 (seventeen years ago)
^^^ on my list of games i should finish before i buy a new one but i'm at the point where advancement isn't worth the frustration. it does have great controls and looks fantastic
