It's Summer 2006, what are you playing?

The creation of ILG has made this kinda thread fall along the wayside.

Anyway, I was playing Oblivion and Jets & Gunz for a long while, but I've taken a break to go play Carcassonne online and other board games.

Wheeeeee.

How 'bout you? Is the game you're playing any good?

kingfish du lac (kingfish 2.0), Sunday, 2 July 2006 07:52 (eighteen years ago)

Mostly We Love Katamari, Rome: Total War and Nethack at the moment. It's all good.

Duck Rivers (noodle vague), Sunday, 2 July 2006 10:19 (eighteen years ago)

Trauma Center: Under the Knife has taken up most of my DS time recently, and I am at this very minute starting The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask after recently acquiring the "Legend of Zelda Collectors Edition" for the Gamecube.

Gun. Looks good, but leaves a lot to be desired.

Hulk. Great gameplay, terrible story / missions / writing.

ive started gta:sa from the beginning. my last run through i quit at the plane lessons. for some reason im great at manual aim shooting and car racing this time and i suck at taking over territory. the complete opposite was true last time. im still in los santos and i have 80 something million dollars. sweet, but nothing to spend it on. and i still cant resist killing the drug dealers whenever i spot them even though theyre only worth two grand each. also, im actually watching the cut scenes this time through. i just xed through them last time. its still kind of painful to watch but ok to know why im doing stuff. im also half way through the latest tomb raider and a little into liberty city on psp. im giving katamari and all the sports games a rest.

pleasant plains is playing liberty city on the ps2 right now.

Me and MGS3 -- 1+1=2: 1 attempt at beating 1 boss took 2 hours.

sLeeeter Kinney (Leee), Monday, 3 July 2006 02:26 (eighteen years ago)

Yesterday finished liberty city on ps2, but will carry on playing for all the extra things.

also revisiting Tron 2 on the PC, just love the look and feel of the graphics. although i can't get multiplay to work :(

and when i always find the time for a few bouts of Katamari these days.

Ste (Fuzzy), Monday, 3 July 2006 11:35 (eighteen years ago)

Me and MGS3 -- 1+1=2: 1 attempt at beating 1 boss took 2 hours.

If I'm thinking of the same boss, that's one of my favorite video game moments ever.

I'm also playing FF4 on the GBA but it's kind of tedious. Every dungeon has like two different random encounters (ie two sets of monsters that you find) and they show up every ten or fifteen steps.

adam (adam), Monday, 3 July 2006 11:41 (eighteen years ago)

If you mean The End, then man, you sux0r. You should've seen me playing him. For the first 5 minutes, I was lying in the grass frantically trying to find him with thermal goggles. 30 minutes in, I find a shed to the corner, but ignore it -- surely a trap! 45 minutes in, I take the chance and go in -- hey, a sniper rifle!

MGS3 is nuts in a bad way for me! Every time I get past a screen with any number of guards, I save. I'm waiting for ParaMedic to make fun of the staggering number of times that I've saved so far.

sLeeeter Kinney (Leee), Monday, 3 July 2006 19:43 (eighteen years ago)

It's embarrassing how bad I'm at MGS just because it doesn't have radar. Oh Soliton!!

sLeeeter Kinney (Leee), Monday, 3 July 2006 19:52 (eighteen years ago)

I have never enjoyed metal gear solid no matter how hard i try.

jeffrey (johnson), Monday, 3 July 2006 21:34 (eighteen years ago)

Playing: Splinter Cell - pandora tomorrow multiplayer. Amazingly balanced spy (standard splinter cell character) vs merc (Level 60 warrior).

I pretty much detested the single player but the multiplayer, when i play with my friend of a similar skill level, has a tension and atmosphere that i've not found in any other game, ever.

jeffrey (johnson), Monday, 3 July 2006 21:38 (eighteen years ago)

I loved loved loved the fight with The End. It took hours and I kind of wanted to cry for most of it but afterwards I was totally, totally satisfied. Apparently you can shoot (and eat!) his bird. I haven't been able to do it.

adam (adam), Monday, 3 July 2006 22:57 (eighteen years ago)

Bust-A-Groove.

Laurah (laurah), Monday, 3 July 2006 23:07 (eighteen years ago)

I saw his bird! But I was so paranoid about shooting things -- I didn't want to give away my position -- that I let the squawky bastard live.

Beating the last few figments out of Psychonauts, replaying Halflife 2 on easy because I only just finished it on average, actually possibly rethinking Libery City (I'm not far in, but do I really want to scour the city for packages? Isn't there anything else I could do with my time?)

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Thursday, 6 July 2006 09:08 (eighteen years ago)

Good call Greg! Best game to play in the hot weather.

I've still barely started on Psychonauts, though I've had it a while, because I rented God of War last week and have just started on Fire Emblem: Path of Radiance. I'll get round to it eventually though, cos it seemed great.

I have abandoned Oblivion - curse you, corrupt save game!

I've recently made a start on Thief: Deadly Shadows, which has been sitting on my desk for months still in the wrapper. It hasn't really bitten me though. Still feeding the Dark Age of Camelot habit, naturellement.

Zora (Zora), Friday, 7 July 2006 08:40 (eighteen years ago)

Animal Crossing on the DS is taking up most of my time - just prior to that it was Minish Cap. I've dabbled with the Movies and Sims2, and I just bought the Movies special xfx expansion pack and Sims2 Open for Business, so I should install those on the weekend and see what they're like I guess.

me and a friend played Rampage on the PS2 for about 40 levels last night, the longest I may have ever played it. We could have gone on forever it was that addictive, if we weren't up for work this morning.

also Sensible Soccer is quite entertaining for me at the moment.

Liberty City Stories still up there though.

Ste (Fuzzy), Thursday, 13 July 2006 09:50 (eighteen years ago)

-MGS: Subsistence with the good 3-d camera that I loves
-God of War finally
-Considering starting GTA:SA again. Wino, are you enjoying it for the second time? Does it hold up? is it frustrating not having all the power you're used to right at the beginning?

antexit (antexit), Thursday, 13 July 2006 15:05 (eighteen years ago)

yesterday I bought and completed Return to Mysterious Island, a cheap PC graphic adventure. it was fun.

my pc died. Now i have a 3200+ athlon processor and Teh Movies Expansion Pack, haven't tried it very much yet, i feel the need to play the game from the very start rather than use the quickstart jump to 1960 so you can have all sorts of stunt fun feature. Shaping up to be really good though, especially the freecam.

I'm playing New Super Mario*, Bubble Bobble and Tony Hawk's American Sk8land on the DS (when the kids let me have a go, that is).

I spent too long away from Animal Crossing and people left town and I missed Freckles' birthday :( I'm also beginning to hate how Nook's shop is expanding faster than my house, the robbing bastard.

I should play CS Source again, to see if G-Kit's as good as he thinks he is :P

Trying to get into Darwinia based on its reputation, but it just seems awfully boring so far.

Dan I. (Dan I.), Thursday, 17 August 2006 08:22 (eighteen years ago)

I'm on the last world of New Super Mario Bros for DS and it's getting a bit too hard for my old slow thumbs. The end of world bosses have all been ridiculously easy to beat so far, is this a Mario tradition or something?

Had a wee go at CS:S recently, and I can still play quite well - but nowhere near as good as when I played regularly. Source keeps crashing between maps for some reason, which is enough to put me off playing tbh.

I'm also playing through the Donkey Kong Country games on a SNES emulator.

Crikey, I have three Saturns! I keep seeing them at bootfairs for £2 or so (which is an offer I can't refuse, obviously). I'd try and arrange a way to send one to you, but I've got a feeling it'd be pretty expensive. Are you in the UK?

Darramouss ftw! (Darramouss ftw), Friday, 18 August 2006 16:35 (eighteen years ago)

I have finally gotten a job that allows me to abandon all sanity when it comes to buying games, so there's a couple:

- River City Ransom EX (GBA) (goddamn but this game is about a billion times better when you've actually got the controller it was designed to be played on rather than a keyboard and a ROM. I'm coming to the realization that my favorite games aren't the ones that offer you a vast expanse of possibilities - I like games that focus on one activity and make it ocean-floor deep. Needless to say, RCR (or as I like to think of it, Beating People Up: The Game) was pretty much lying in ambush for me.)

- Konami Arcade Classics (GBA) (I tend to think retro gaming can suck it for the most part, but I have to admit that three of the six games on her [the karate game, the top-view 360-degree historical shootemup, and Gyruss) are idiotically fun, even moreso in inverse proportion to my state of sobriety)

- Big Brain Academy (DS) (fuck, I waited on the edge of my seat for Brain Age when THIS was waiting out there?)

- Tony Hawk's American Sk8land (sick of my router's temperment, I nutted up and threw some money at the Nintendo Wi-fi dongle, figuring that the ease of use would pay for itself once the Wii rolls around. Unfortunately I ended up having to delete all my Tony Hawk data while trying to set up a wifi profile for the game, which would be a problem if I didn't love the series so much and wasn't so eager to play through the game [which really is the worst of the series but is still plenty o fun] again)

- Wario Land 4 (GBA) (Where the fuck was everyone when this thing came out? I'm only just starting out - really, I'm only just at that point you get to a few levels into a game when you all of a sudden wake up to the mechanics like Homer walking into the gym - but the game's looking like it's got a retarded amount of intricacy in terms of planning routes through the levels (crucial since every level ends with a race against the clock back to the beginning)).

I'm also planning to pick up the following:
- Mario Hoops 3 on 3
- Rhythm Tengoku (Wario Ware producers making a music game gets my interest)
- Starfox Command (if the reviews are good enough)
- Castlevania DS (comes back into print next month)
- Summon Night (GBA RPG/beat-em-up published by Atlus - Atlus games tend to have pretty small production runs and so it's best to pick up any of their games that tempt you even a little bit since the window for buying them is pretty slim)

It kinda sucks playing all these GBA games on a Lite - it just bothers me to no end that the carts don't sit flush to the system. I have doubts that Wario Ware: Twisted would even stay in the slot.

Civ 4: Warlords. Some Dawn of War: Winter Assault, to tide me over until Dark Crusade comes out, too.

ALLAH FROG (Mingus Dew), Saturday, 19 August 2006 05:33 (eighteen years ago)

The thing about Dodgeball is that aside from Smash Brothers, I've never played a game where going through the motions of beating the shit out of the computer was such a zen-like pleasure. The actual competition was so awesomely nerve-wracking that the single player was like a gentle drift of walloping people back to the stone age with dodgeballs.

Seeing how much deeper RCR should be a whole lot of fun tho

Got Psychonauts last week, and so far this sucker is kinda fun but pretty overrated. I'm at Lungfishopolis now, which is the best part so far but not like OMGWTF awesome or anything. And the clunky gameplay, occasionally confusing graphics, endless cut scenes and looong load times are all annoying.

Thinking about looking for day of the tentacle. Do you think it's worth the trouble it will almost definitely take to get it running on a modern machine?

Dan I. (Dan I.), Sunday, 24 September 2006 20:55 (eighteen years ago)

DOTT is worth it.

kingfish prætor (kingfish 2.0), Sunday, 24 September 2006 22:50 (eighteen years ago)

Actually having played it again recently, no it isnt really worth it. It's one of those games best left remembered like Monkey Island 1&2.

Darramouss (Darramouss ftw), Sunday, 24 September 2006 23:23 (eighteen years ago)

Rubbish! I've replaed DOTT, Sam & Max, SimCity2000, Monkey Island, Dungeon Keeper... all were as fun as I remember. You just have to take off the snobby "these graphics are LAME" goggles (I mean the generic "you" there).

Trayce (trayce), Sunday, 24 September 2006 23:43 (eighteen years ago)

It should take almost no effort to get it running if you use the SCUMMVM emulator. Also DOTT holds up very well, as do Sam and Max and the (less old) Grim Fandango. Monkey Island 1 and 2 feel very dated.

Speaking of getting old games working, I cant get Dungeon Keeper to play on my XP box and I'm not sure why. I mean it runs, but the video weirds out and flickers like a bastard. Then I tried something else - the compatibility mode I think - and it was running like turbo mode was on, going a bajillion miles an hour. Oh and with no sound. GRARGH. How do I get it to work? :(

Pretty much how I feel

This is the thread for LucasArts alumni: (DoubleFine, Telltale, Psychonauts, etc)

Come on and join me there. Working through it myself. I'm really enjoying the mystery and new characters. The loading times are a real pain in the ass as are the camera views. It can take a long time to get used to it. Also things aren't that hard. Yet. God, I know I'm going to regret saying that now...

I have been playing Lego Star Wars 2. It's pretty good.

treefell (treefell), Monday, 25 September 2006 12:34 (eighteen years ago)

I've been torturing myself with Lego Star Wars II DS, but I got frustrated with horrible platform jumping in the ewok stage last night and turned it off (probably for good).

Jordan (Jordan), Monday, 25 September 2006 12:48 (eighteen years ago)

FF1 on emulator at work.

Monkey Island 1 & 2 will always be awesome.

teh_kit (g-kit), Monday, 25 September 2006 13:05 (eighteen years ago)

I played Monkey Island II the other week. I got as far as talking to the Woodchuck, then willie the cartographer and switched it off. I have such great memories of it, especially the later parts of the game, but I cannot be bothered with the first island. I expect I'll never play it again to be honest.

But what am I playing?

-Silent Storm 2 on the PC. Taking someone out with the sniper rifle and the ground-mounted machine guns is SO satisfying.
-Tony Hawks American Skateland on DS which is nice to pass the time, but I'm pretty certain I'm not very good at it.
-Also Starfox on the DS. Just getting started on this, but it seems fun so far! And the control system is actually very good.
-Oh yeah, and Pokemon - Leaf Green. All my pokemon are Lame, I'll soon catch some good ones I'm sure!

Craig Gilchrist (Craig Gilchrist), Monday, 25 September 2006 13:32 (eighteen years ago)

Call of Juarez arrived today.
lots of positive reviews, most odd for a Western game, so i thought i'd give it a go. i'll let you all know how it is in the next few days.

teh_kit (g-kit), Monday, 25 September 2006 13:59 (eighteen years ago)

I'm playing the only 60ish days left until WII game.

a naked Kraken annoying Times Square tourists with an acoustic guitar (nickalici, Monday, 25 September 2006 14:20 (eighteen years ago)

I have been playing:

- Half Life 2 (regular & EP1 - just finished both; MORE PLZ)
- Call of Duty 2 (almost finished!)
- DOA 4 (MY GOD TEH TITTIES)
- Lego Star Wars: Thee Original Trilogy (by proxy; letting my roomy & his gurl charge thru it, then I'll do it on my own once I move)

David R. (popshots75`), Monday, 25 September 2006 18:06 (eighteen years ago)

-Yakuza, which is boring and infuriating and fun
-New Super Mario and Brain Age, thanks to Slocki the wonderful guy who gave my his DS Phat
-The Warriors for the second time, and I'm pretty shocked at how brutal it is, which I wasn't the first time
-MGS3, stuck on the sniper battle
-NHL Hitz, the best game, so slept-on

antexit (antexit), Monday, 25 September 2006 19:11 (eighteen years ago)

- trauma center (stuck on the stupid aneurysm level)
- dragon quest slime dudes (JOY)

s1ocki (slutsky), Monday, 25 September 2006 22:01 (eighteen years ago)

Found out the other day that Trauma Centre and Harvest Moon won't be available for sale in Aus :( :(

Time for Amazon I guess.

Trayce (trayce), Monday, 25 September 2006 22:59 (eighteen years ago)

Trayce, what Harvest Moon do you mean? I happen to have a copy of one of installments (don't remember which).

c('°c) (Leee), Monday, 25 September 2006 23:44 (eighteen years ago)

The DS one that's just come out in Japan. It wont be getting an Aus release :(

Trayce (trayce), Tuesday, 26 September 2006 02:23 (eighteen years ago)

Call of Juarez is decent. At first, i was rather disappointed; looong load times and fiddly graphics options meant it took me the best part of an hour to optimise the game for my machine. the load times are the biggest disappointment, especially since my machine is pretty speedy.
you play two characters in this game, one stealthy, one guns-a-blazing.
the learning curve for the stealth missions is quite steep, and it took me a long time to escape from a town with the entire population looking for me. when they spot you, they shoot, if they hit you, you die. really tough introduction to the game.
but it's SO worth it to get to play the shooty character - you have a bullet time ability and dual pistols, and it looks awesome and fits really well into the gameplay. 5 bullets to the face in SLO-MO, bitch!
if you've always wanted to play a cowboy game that isn't total shite, check it out.

Short my ass! Granted, I'm playing it sporadically. (I can only take so much gunfire.)

You are in for three unmitigated treats and one infuriating game.

James.Cobo (jamescobo), Friday, 29 September 2006 14:01 (eighteen years ago)

been playing a lot of rome games lately, thus my latest name. the demo & art bits for Caesar IV are really good. I like actually seeing my subjects wandering around the town.

kingfish prætor (kingfish 2.0), Saturday, 30 September 2006 09:39 (eighteen years ago)

x-files: resist or serve for ps2. gameplay is pretty standard resident evil/silent hill survival horror, but it captures the atmosphere of the show very well. voice actors are from the show too!

speaking of silent hill i ordered silent hill 2 new directly from konami, which i've been wanting to play again (i never beat it) since the movie came out, but havent been able to find used anywhere (though that's not too surprising for a 5 year-old game).

how much, latebloomer? (latebloomer), Saturday, 30 September 2006 12:17 (eighteen years ago)

I agree COD 2 was too short compared to the first, and not as good IMO.

Darramouss (Darramouss ftw), Saturday, 30 September 2006 12:30 (eighteen years ago)

I'm going to play Guitar Hero 2 tonight and am pretty excited about it. Other than that, still making my way through Okami. Just finished Lego Star Wars 2.

i already beat rocket slime!

s1ocki (slutsky), Saturday, 30 September 2006 20:13 (eighteen years ago)

Guys, Guitar Hero 2 is about three times as good as the original. Holy shit.

polyphonic (polyphonic), Sunday, 1 October 2006 08:16 (eighteen years ago)

I bought Castlevania: Dawn of Sorrow DS in a moment of weakness yesterday. I hope it washes Lego Star Wars II DS out of my brain.

Jordan (Jordan), Sunday, 1 October 2006 13:55 (eighteen years ago)

Ok it rules, I played it for like two hours tonight.

Jordan (Jordan), Monday, 2 October 2006 01:27 (eighteen years ago)

I was hungover yesterday and needed to play games lying down, so I went back to Mario & Luigi: Partners in Time, which I just kind of stopped playing for no good reason. I've now racked up 11 hours on it, and I'm hoping I must be getting near the end by now... *(just done the Volcano level)

Craig Gilchrist (Craig Gilchrist), Monday, 2 October 2006 06:29 (eighteen years ago)

I've never played or even seen it but I'm going to go ahead and wager that yes, the volcano level is probably near the end of the game. The volcano level is always near the end of the game.

a naked Kraken annoying Times Square tourists with an acoustic guitar (nickalici, Monday, 2 October 2006 18:04 (eighteen years ago)

OTM

teh_kit (g-kit), Monday, 2 October 2006 18:08 (eighteen years ago)

Hahah. Normally, I'd agree that should be OTM, but from the walkthrough I just checked (Only to see how far there is to go!!), I'm only on level 17 of 24. :(

Craig Gilchrist (Craig Gilchrist), Monday, 2 October 2006 18:44 (eighteen years ago)

I'm about halfway through Castlevania DS. No volcanoes yet. I'm so glad that people are still making games like this!

Jordan (Jordan), Tuesday, 3 October 2006 16:14 (eighteen years ago)

I've borrowed Brother in Arms

Rather repetitive- The situations are all looking the same right now: approach enemy, attempt to flank him repeat

lk (lawrence kansas), Tuesday, 3 October 2006 17:10 (eighteen years ago)

Me & the roomy have broke out SMASH TV for the SNES the last couple of nights, it is fun w/ beers etc, and one of the only games from back then that is still as hard as I remember it.

a naked Kraken annoying Times Square tourists with an acoustic guitar (nickalici, Tuesday, 3 October 2006 17:11 (eighteen years ago)

Also it reminds me of this one particular arcade on a pier in Myrtle Beach that I wasted many a quarter on.

latebloomer (latebloomer), Tuesday, 3 October 2006 19:40 (eighteen years ago)

I are finally installed and playing the Movies stuntsplosions expansion! I'll report back in a day or two once I get to a point I can use the new tech. Might even post a film. Heh.

Trayce (trayce), Wednesday, 4 October 2006 00:23 (eighteen years ago)
