lately, myself and Onimo have been playing CS:S together. any other uk/european CS:Sers care to join us any time? if we get a few players together at weekends or summat, i'm sure much fun will be had by all.we play on the UESC Monkey Brothel server most of the time. drop me a reply/email and i'll throw the IP at you. just think, if we get enough people playing, we can put [ILX] tags on our names, and all the kidz0rs will think we R teh ub3r l33t!!!111

the community is nice, but occasionally it gets overrun with a strange group of disrespectful Strongos that break the rules when the admins aren't around and call everybody lolgaynoobs in all caps until the server clears out. makes no sense to me, but that's how some folks roll.
if that happens, we arrange another server on msn. JimD, come play with us! if you use msn, add me: kittenslikemilk@hotmail.com

There was another one I can't remember the name of but it had 3 glass/transparent levels and teleporters between levels. Brilliant design, forces you to check every possible direction for enemies.

CT always go to the same places on de_dust, you can almost shoot without looking. It's funny beating them coz they think they've picked the easy team.
Anyway, you saw how bad I was when we got onto All New Shiny New Nuke (6-8 or something? and that was with 3 frags for a bomb!). A wee bit of room for improvement there.

Don't move when you shoot. I naturally strafe and duck and jump and everything when I'm firing automatic weapons and it's hard to get out of the habit. You must be completely still when you fire. Also, don't spend too much time lining up a shot, if you see someone in your scope just make a very short movement towards them and fire.
I still don't buy them ($5k and sometimes you're lucky if you fire one shot) but occasionally practice with them on deathmatch/fy servers as it's handy to be able to use one if you find it.

bind "F12" "jpeg" (where F12 is the key you use to shot screen)
in console or put it in your config.cfg file. It might be there by default.
Your screenshots will be stored in \Program Files\Valve\Steam\SteamApps\your_id\counter-strike source\cstrike\screenshots
(I just checked and you can do this via Options -> Keyboard)

Well I'm sure if I could play for more than 30 mins at a time without it crashing I'd enjoy it a bit more. Updated my graphics card drivers to no avail. I should try another FPS to see if it's just a problem with the Source engine.

I thought I might have fixed it recently, as it seemed to coincide with steam flashing up a news update, or my virus checker or windows update popping up a dialog box... basically activity from any other app. So I disabled all that stuff, closed all other apps before running... same problem.
Also, I've recently changed my processor, motherboard, graphics card, hard drive - everything except the psu - but I had pretty much the same problem with the old kit! Could it be psu related - the card drawing too much power or something? It's 450w - maybe 400 - I wouldn't have thought it would be getting overloaded.

a) thread summary: i asked people to play CS with me, some said yes. we play usually at UESC Monkey Brothel: 82.136.6.5:27015
b) how not to suck: aim for the head. basically, this game comes down to being fast and accurate at pointing and clicking your mouse. strategy helps, which you can only develop by playing with a decent team and practice, practice, practice. trial and error. know what works and what doesn't, and adapt. learn how to use (and counter) flashes effectively. biggest tip i can give anyone, use your EARS. sound plays a BIG part in this game, especially with smaller teams.
hopefully we'll have a JIHAD TRAINING NIGHT (hi dere FBI) sometime soon, where we all get together and help out the new ILG players. (see, i didn't say NOOBS)

the following is all personal preference, obviously, but here's how i buy (in this order):I ALWAYS get Kevlar and helmet. ALWAYS. next on the list is a decent pistol. 90% of CS players swear by the Desert Eagle (1,4 in the buy menu), and i can see the logic. it packs a hell of a punch, and 95% of headshots are instant kills. personally, i prefer the USP (1,2 in buy menu). Larger clip, better rate of fire, but not so much damage.
Next comes the big decision: which main weapon to buy?For noobs (sorry), i'd recommend the MP5 (3,2 in buy menu). High rate of fire, pretty low recoil, good stopping power if you get a headshot in your burst/spray. If you're at long range, switch to pistol, though, since MP5 is wack at anything over short-mid range.
When you get some confidence with the MP5, try your hand at the AK47 (4,2) as terrorist, or M4 (4,3) as Counter-Terrorist. Remember, single shots and short bursts only, or the recoil will send your aim sky high and you won't hit fuck all.
If you're finding recoil hard to control, try the pump action shotgun (2,1), it's awesome at close range, and even at mid-long range, a few blasts will make people think twice about confronting you, unless they have a rifle, in which case, you're probably fucked.
But really, it's all about experimentation and finding something you're comfortable with. I know a fair few players that always use an SMG or Shotgun.
Personally, my faves in order of preference (with buy commands in brackets again):
AK47 (4,2)MP5 (3,2)Mac10 (3,1)Pump shotty (2,1)
If you have some money left after all that, stock up with HE Grenades and Flashbangs. Flashbangs are AWESOME, i swear by them. I HATE having to rush into combat without at least one.
Sorry 4 essay tbh. Anyone add anything else?
xpost, Scout PWNS, but it's not for noobs.

money is important, yes. the richer team can buy better arms and equipment, and is therefore more likely to pwn.
money is given to players for:being on the winning teamplanting the bombdefusing the bombkilling members of the opposite team

And when i want to list the servers at the start of play my columns are screwed. ie the columns "Game", "Players?" "Map", "Latency" are always scrunched up to the right of window whenever i open it up new.
anyone know how to fix it?

it's as if it's decided to suddenly shart showing the full server names in the window, so the other columns don't stand a chance. Like when you double click on an Excel column and it expands to its maximum entry length.
― Ste (Fuzzy), Monday, 2 October 2006 11:36 (eighteen years ago)
have been winning games on DoD actually, knowing the maps on these games really pays off doesn't it.
Last night i was teaming well with some guy, we were clearing the levels in seconds, then he decides to switch teams. Leaves me with some guy on my team who just seeemed to enjoy standing around shooting thousands of holes in all my spray tag pics of my mates pet dog. the loon.

the gun games actually give you a good time to discover which weapons are chud, like the ak47 for instance

Gun games are cool, I won one today and felt like the uber-leetz0r. Nice way to inject a bit of fun into the game, although some of the maps they use on those servers are a tad poo. -- struttin' with some barbecue (takeyourmedicinelikeacham...), October 1st, 2006 11:36 PM. (link) (admin) (userip)

i have a question about lag though. my ping is usually around 30-50. Is this okay? I ask because often I find myself chucking hundreds of bullets right into someones face only to end up deaded from a single shot. and from spectating i see people taking each down with only a couple of long distance shots to the body.
Is there often lots of lag, do i have to compensate and shoot 'in front' of my enemy?
or am i kidding myself and im just a crap shot?

1, prices of a few really good guns get ridiculously high and the game becomes inaccessible very rapidly to noobs like me.
2, noob players become learned in the fact that earning money is u&k and i stop running blindly around corridors or into own teams flash grenades and actually start playing properly as rewards are worth it.

Prices change weekly, and what goes up must come down, especially with this model. When things become too expensive, they will be purchased less, the price will drop. Swings and roundabouts. Plus it's nice to be able to effectively buy a Deagle as a main weapon and a Mac10 as a sidearm with your change!

-- Darramouss (darramous...), Today 2:13 PM. (Darramouss ftw) (later)
the question i'm asking is "Who would choose to take no ammo?"
-- teh_kit returns! (kittenslikemil...), Today 2:14 PM. (g-kit) (later)
"I CAN DO TEH WHOEL TEAM WITH 7 BULLETS, WATCH!"
In eco rounds I often stick with a usp/glock and one clip. The whole point is to save money, manage money, and know how much the team will have colectively for the next round.
If you have to use 120 glock bullets to kill some fucker with a decent gun you're playing the wrong game.
In a rush round you're either dead or guarding a bomb within 20 seconds and umpteen nades of the start and you'd never use 120 AK rounds (well you could spray like a madman but you'd hit fuck all)
Also, as I understand it (my sauce=fuxored), you don't get max with every weapon. MAC10 apparently comes with a clip in the chamber and 40 extra rounds - you use to be able to buy 150. 70 MAC10 rounds = about 5 seconds of ammo = shite.

I found another gun game mod. When you get killed you don't have to wait until the end of the round you just respawn somewhere randomly. You need 3 kills per gun though, and its' bedlam.

trickery.net is the name.
Aye, it's got some good maps. The one with all the bunkers (i.e. bunker_somethingorover.bsp or whatever) is pretty slick. It also has churches which is cool and this other one that I've totally forgotten the name of but that has two towers on each side of the map and is pretty sweet.

They've bound a short cut to a shitty Games2.0 pile of shite using two standard in-game keys!
By the time I work out what has happened and get back to the game I've been stabbied to death.

I'm not playing TF2 because there doesn't yet appear to be a preorder bundle for those of us who already have HL2 and everything, but want to pick up E1, plus E2 and all the new bits and pieces.
I made us a group! Join!

How long until that Orange Box thing is out on Xbox? I assume it'll be able to play against PC folks, a la Shadowrun, and if it does I'll be there.

er - anybody still playing this? I just installed it LAST NIGHT! Apparently my pc is slightly less shit than I thought it was. Haven't really played much games on a computer since lode runner tho - so I have some catching up to do. Are there any decent online guides on the basics of the game? Just had time to try it out a little with the bots and was a bit lost there - so don't even want to think about how i'd fare in a real game yet...
steam = jefflev13
Also interested in some Half Life 2: Deathmatch which came packed in. Tried it out a little this morning and it was pretty crazy. I really like that world...
― Jeff LeVine, Wednesday, 5 December 2007 19:25 (seventeen years ago)
This is an epic thread!
Is it weird that more people are STILL playing the original rather than source?
Counter-Strike 187,92 current players Counter-Strike: Source 83,038 current players
Also, do I now need to buy a pc headset?
― Jeff LeVine, Wednesday, 5 December 2007 20:06 (seventeen years ago)
i sometimes play a gun game once in a while. but gun games attract the lunatics.
HL2 DM is madness non stop, nobody has time to chat. especially the killboxes, great fun.
i think if you're deadly serious about your gameplay then a headset could be useful for team talk. I do find it's easier when sometimes talks to me over the speaker, rather than reading it on the chat window.
― Ste, Thursday, 6 December 2007 14:07 (seventeen years ago)
Headphones are essential for hearing where enemies are as well, though not quite so essential since stupid new wallhack radar was brought in.
Assuming you know the basic FPS stuff of running, jumping, ducking and shooting my advice would be - learn the maps, learn the maps and learn the maps - every time you die switch your view mode to one of the best players in your team and watch what they do - learn what guns are shit and what guns are worth buying - don't rush in like cannon fodder until your game improves
I play maybe a couple of times a week. I still prefer 1.6 to Source but I'm happy to play Source if anyone's around and fancies a game. g-kit and JimD still play and I think melton mowbray was going to start playing again so maybe we could sort a day, time and server out?
I've found myself playing nothing but gun games and deathmatches lately as I can't be arsed being dead.
― onimo, Thursday, 6 December 2007 16:59 (seventeen years ago)
what are gun games?
― Jeff LeVine, Thursday, 6 December 2007 20:30 (seventeen years ago)
In gun games everyone starts with a glock or a usp or something. You need to get a certain amount of kills with it then you get the next gun up, eventually progressing to Colts and AK47s and eventually you need a grenades kill then a knife kill or something. First to get through every weapon wins the game. It's deathmatch based so you keep respawning. You can steal levels by getting knife kills at any time (handy for people like me who can't use a Scout).
It fast and frantic and fun but really frustrating if you get off to a bad start and everyone else has a better gun than you.
― onimo, Friday, 7 December 2007 16:26 (seventeen years ago)

So my youngest brother came by over the weekend and gave me his old video card (and installed it). Before at my monitor's highest resolution, 1280 x 1024, the game could only run out 10.31 frames per second. With the new card the game now plays at 91.95 fps! M
y computer is now twice as loud however (yet still not even half as loud as the xbox).

― Ant Attack.. (Ste), Friday, 6 March 2009 12:44 (sixteen years ago)
I've been playing gun-game/deathmatch/fy_ maps (sometimes all at once!) for so long that I haven't the patience for 'proper' Counterstrike. I find myself rushing every round, sometimes getting kills, almost always dying, then getting bored waiting for almost 3 entire minutes before I can play again. That the waiting involves reading/hearing a bunch of teenagers calling each other faggots doesn't help.
― the innermost wee guy (onimo), Friday, 6 March 2009 12:45 (sixteen years ago)
i managed to get pretty good at gun games and then gave up the game entirely. i hated the knife levels and final nade killing.

― Ant Attack.. (Ste), Friday, 6 March 2009 14:49 (sixteen years ago)
Sure I hear from him from time to time. He's an amusing chap and a cunt in equal measure. He fitted right in on ILX, which is probably why he was banned.
― #/.'#/'@ilikecats (g-kit), Friday, 6 March 2009 15:34 (sixteen years ago)
decided to get back in to 1.6 the other day. Got steam again and downloaded CS:S and it, didn't bother playing then. Today, while ilx was down, but not because of that, I decided to sit about all day playing 1.6 and trying to get back in to the zone. Then I couldn't get in to steam because my password had been changed, I didn't change it. Hijacked a dillion :(

I think they disable dormant accounts or something. This happened to my brother and he had to send Valve pictures of him holding cd-key and a copy of today's newspaper.

coming next week to Mac
― Nhex, Friday, 18 June 2010 00:31 (fifteen years ago)
Who's getting this now that it's on Mac? I guess a ton of you already probably own it. Having always kinda sucked at this game, is it (as I suspect) completely dominated by hardcore players nowadays? Nice of Valve to release it on Mac a day early, though the sale is oddly cut down to only two days.
― Nhex, Thursday, 24 June 2010 01:33 (fourteen years ago)
The improvements look to be nice (achievements & stat tracking), but right now, some things are broken, like all mods I think - for sure gun games, which is the only mode I really enjoy :(
Nhex - a lot of people still play the game, so there's a mix of skill levels, but yeah, lots of hardcore & it was a pretty hardcore game to begin with - can definitely be a frustrating experience. Some people seem like they've only been playing this game for the last ten years!
― Jeff LeVine, Thursday, 24 June 2010 02:46 (fourteen years ago)
Some people seem like they've only been playing this game for the last ten years!
I know a couple of guys who have rarely played *any* game other than Counterstrike in ten years. Like they'll buy Wolfenstein and Call of Duty and Battlefield and Medal of Honour every now and then and bash through the single player in a day then try the multi-player for ten minutes before deciding to go back to CS for all time.
My gfx card died on my desktop PC a couple of months back and I've been exclusively using the laptop ever since and haven't got round to getting a mouse and proper keyboard for it so I've only been gaming on my consoles. Once I do I'll hook it up to my HD TV for some big giant CS action, if I can remember how to play it.
― this is gonna get messi (onimo), Thursday, 24 June 2010 08:52 (fourteen years ago)
I haven't played CS for a few weeks, apparently they've implemented some Xbox style achievement faggotry into it now?
― Darramouss, Sunday, 18 July 2010 01:35 (fourteen years ago)
All going to plan, I'll be getting a super duper new PC this weekend!
So I'll be able to hook back onto Steam games, is it now just the hardcore serious CS players that are left playing this. I'm looking forward to my revisit to gun games, but will be upset if my ass gets handed to me constantly.
― Guru Meditation (Ste), Wednesday, 21 July 2010 10:14 (fourteen years ago)
Ste - I don't know how much Counter-Strike you've played in the past, but yeah, it's pretty hardcore, especially in the sense that it feels like the majority of people still playing have been playing for the last ten years. Gun Games level the playing field out a bit & tend to be slightly more casual, I guess. There still are A LOT of people playing, Steam stats suggest over 50,000 people a day so you will still run into a mix of skill levels, but there will always be some top players on every server, at least that's what it seems like to me. For example, I'm pretty terrible at CS, and still play from time to time.
― Jeff LeVine, Thursday, 22 July 2010 14:27 (fourteen years ago)
i was really bad at normal games, and only slightly better at gun games but yeah i still played it for hours on end. i'll probly end up more on TF2, and multi theft auto which was frickin hilarious multiplayer stuff.
