Anyway, friends gave me NSMB last night, so i've been fiddling with it. I like the eclectic adoption of previous SMB bits, but have yet to find anything as fun as Kuribo's shoe and Bob-Omb.

Also beat Trace Memory, which is probably going back to the used games place today.

WooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooW

I'm also playing Three Card Monty w/ my credit cards, but that don't count.

David R. (popshots75`), Friday, 5 January 2007 20:24 (eighteen years ago)

Trace Memory is hella short and easy. Some of the puzzles are supposedly different in the second quest, might want to do that before you trade it. Did you figure out the stamps puzzle without looking it up? That was the only thing in it that gave me any trouble (and I think it might even be an optional puzzle).

Marmot (marmotwolof), Friday, 5 January 2007 21:04 (eighteen years ago)

the stamp puzzle and the "blow on the glass" puzzle were enh. Plus, the shit like how you had to click on very precise places in order to find something. Pixel hunting is annoying but works on a PC w/ a big ass screen; on a DS, it's unacceptable.

Finally getting to really play The Thousand Year Door. Also Smackdown vs Raw 2007, which deftly straddles great and terrible.

Wow, used DS/GBA games at Gamecrazy are cheaper than I expected, and far better priced that the EB/Gamestop rip-off joints.

some guys hacked "A Link To The Past" and created a whole new game.
http://www.romhacking.net/hacks/197/

from the nfo

"Parallel Worlds is a fully hacked version of Zelda 3 (aka A Link to the Past).
A majority of the game has been changed. There may be a few rooms which can be said to be similar to some from the original game.

General changes involve:

* Brand new Overworlds, I promise you won't find an area which is unchanged!
* Brand new Dungeons, all dungeons are completely different from the original!
* New house indoors and caves, some of these you may find similar to the original game.
* New Graphics, a lot of the graphics have been changed.
* New Screen layout, similar to Ocarina of Time yet not exactly the same.
* Some new music, the original game had great music, these are not to be changed :)
* New Story, while some maybe similar to the original game, but it's intentional.
* A lot of other changes, and surprises!"

here's a newsbit about the upcoming Super Robot Taisen W for the DS

...Hyakujuu-Ou Golion, as the lion-based Voltron series is known in Japan, is just one of the series planned for inclusion in the game. Joining it will be shows like Nadesico, Majinkaizer, and lots and lots of Gundam. A total of 18 series will make the cut this time around.

[...]

The "W" in the game's title is in reference both to the DS's two screens (the Japanese associate "W" with "Double") and to the fact that the game's scenario is split into two parts. Banpresto played similar tricks with the scenarios for the Alpha Gaiden and R entries in the series, only this time, the second scenario will follow the first after only a slight time gap.

Super Robot Taisen W is set for Japanese release on March 1st. Does the Voltron connection guarantee a US release? Hells no! But, thankfully, DS software is region free, so interested parties will be able to import.

(crossposted w/ ILE Iraq thread)

For a slightly different vantage point, here's a bit here about a gamer's life in Baghdad, from the vantage point of a 23-year-old Iraqi guy who plays the games off of his own generator. I can't read the actual article, which is slathered in so much Mtv.com flash abortion that my work computer won't load it.

If someone would be so giving as to c&p this shit onto here, i'd be grateful.

Mortal Combat: An Iraqi Gamer Shares His Harrowing Story

Baghdad gamer shares stories; others being told on new blog.
By Stephen Totilo

When a 23-year-old Iraqi in Baghdad named Wisam used to play the Gulf War computer game "Desert Combat," he didn't play as his countrymen. He fought with the American-led coalition forces. Most Iraqi gamers he knows choose that side.

It's not because they have a great affinity for the Americans, who Wisam refers to as "the invaders." There's a more practical motivation, he revealed last week during a late-night interview with MTV News from his home in Baghdad, where he was up at 1 a.m. and home because of a government-imposed curfew. "Let me just tell you, we are impressed by your guns."

Last month Wisam appeared in a five-minute video interview on the blog Alive in Baghdad. With "Final Fantasy XII" running idle on the TV behind him, he talked about his life as a gamer in the capital of war-torn Iraq. The broadcast of his tale was made possible by other young men, including Wisam's interviewer, Omar Abdullah, 22 — a Palestinian correspondent for the blog who has lived most of his life in Baghdad — and Brian Conley, a 26-year-old American who has run Alive in Baghdad as a counterpoint to mainstream-TV coverage of the war in Iraq since late 2004. All agreed to talk to MTV News about the blog, about gaming and why it was so important to tell Wisam's story.

Conley cited a comment he heard from an Iraqi refugee and blogger in Canada who had been asked why she bothered to share her story. " 'If we can tell interesting and compelling stories, it makes it harder for them to shoot us or to kill us,' " he recalled. "The most important thing for us to be doing now is to be saying, 'These are the people in Iraq and this is what they have to say.' "

Conley can't explain why he became fascinated with the country. He remembers watching Operation Desert Storm on CNN. He took Arabic in college and was taught by an Iraqi professor. Curiosities grew. In 2005, he was finally able to visit the country, and with a zeal for reporting, he befriended Iraqis and launched Alive in Baghdad to channel their stories. His team is now spread from the U.S. to the Middle East, and the site has aired dozens of now-weekly five-minute video interviews with Iraqis. Alive in Baghdad has featured conversations with Iraqi police, artists and one of its own correspondents, who spoke of being kidnapped and beaten by the Shiite Mehdi Army, led by radical cleric Moqtada al-Sadr. Conley knew that subject matter was engaging a certain audience but wanted to expand its range even further.

Abdullah, who had filmed many of the interviews in Iraq, was game. "We've been trying to make a show about what people do at nighttime," he said. The government curfew in Baghdad starts at 11 p.m. on most nights, though Abdullah said people strive to be home hours earlier, before it gets dark. "People just want to get home so they can stay safe."

It was hard, and continues to be, to find interview subjects. "A lot of people are very, very scared to talk on camera in Baghdad," Abdullah said. "You don't know who's your enemy. You don't know who's your friend. Shia killing Sunnis. Sunnis killing Shia. Sunnis fighting the U.S. military. They'll go on in one circle."

Abdullah came up with one workable idea that was close to his heart. A gaming aficionado who reads GameSpot, regularly raves about "Metal Gear Solid" and will voluntarily stop talking about sectarian violence to rant about the graphics in "Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas," he suggested talking to people about games. Wisam was willing.

It turns out that Wisam is often willing to talk about games. He sat for Omar's camera and agreed to talk about that aspect of his life in his war-torn country to MTV News. But in both cases, despite the seemingly innocuous subject matter, he asked that his last name not be used out of concerns for his safety.

What's the gaming life been like in Baghdad? It has followed a path familiar to many European gamers, where the Amiga computer was the premiere gaming system at a time when the Nintendo Entertainment System dominated in America and Japan. Then the Sega Genesis was big. ("Mortal Kombat" on that machine was a Wisam favorite.) Then came PlayStation. Nintendo was never big. The dominant games were always the soccer titles, Wisam said. He couldn't find many folks like himself who, in his words, is a " 'Final Fantasy' freaker."

Wisam says he learned much of his English from "Metal Gear" and "Final Fantasy." (He had trouble with "Dragon Quest VIII: Journey of the Cursed King" because the English in that game is spoken with British accents.) Most of the games he buys are bootlegs, sold for about a dollar in Baghdad's Tahrir Square. "Before the invasion, we could buy a lot of games," Wisam said. "The games are available if you go outside. But maybe I'll get killed by a car bomb or [improvised explosive device]."

The American-led overthrow of Saddam Hussein's regime changed Wisam's taste in games. He and his gamer friends used to enjoy first-person shooters like "Medal of Honor" and "Call of Duty." Then a real war started around him. "We hate the attacking, the gunfire in games," Wisam said. "We started to hate it." In fact, there's only one game with guns he can still tolerate. " 'Grand Theft Auto' is the exception. Because 'Grand Theft Auto' is like us."

Abdullah concurs, saying San Andreas looks like his city. "It was very, very similar to Baghdad. We were like, 'Oh my God. These are the same actions that happen in Baghdad.' There are some places that are divided. For each place, there is a gang ruling that place. You can go down the street and drive any car. If you want to jump on a motorcycle, you can do it."

Electricity is sporadic in Wisam's neighborhood. The local generator is on from 4 p.m. to midnight. To power his console, Wisam got a gas-powered generator. To get the needed gas, he waits in lines at a gas station, four hours at a time. He spends about $200 a month on electricity, money he says he collects from rent on some businesses. Otherwise, he doesn't work, which frustrates him. "I recently graduated from the Baghdad University English Department. I'm useless."

All this involvement with Western culture might surprise some Americans, but Abdullah said it has always had a foothold in Iraq. "Some folks in the United States, when they think about Iraq, they think they are just some people in a village riding a camel or whatever," he said.

Not so. Abdullah says he's a metalhead, for example — and that he's not the only one. Until a few years ago, a Western music station played several hours of metal in Iraq a day, he said. "I can assure you that there are more than 50 to 100 thousand Iraqis in Baghdad listening to Metallica right now," he said. He recalls walking through Baghdad wearing a Metallica T-shirt before the war. Neighbors would cheerfully flash a familiar heavy-metal hand sign. "A lot of people wave the devil horns in Baghdad, and if the situation is a bit calmer and the security is a bit better, you can come and try it yourself." The current situation in Iraq, however, compelled Abdullah to leave the country. He's in Syria these days.

After Wisam sat for his interview with Abdullah, Conley tapped him for translation work. Conley has tried to make his Alive in Baghdad effort reciprocal, providing tips and equipment, extra work and friendship to the Iraqis who help him make their stories public. He's got the whole arrangement tethered with shoestrings, burning through $2,000 a month while drawing about 10,000 viewers to each video interview. "We think we have about enough money for one or two more months, and then we're done," Conley said.

Visitors from around the world visit Alive in Baghdad. Each video has a comments section, providing a window not just to the wide-ranging support Conley's project gets but the criticisms of those who see it as propaganda. He resists what he calls "this really bullsh-- simplification of the conflict in Iraq that, 'Oh, they hate each other, and we need to get out of there because it's not our civil war.' " Conley clearly has a position, but he hopes people come to the site with an open mind. "We're trying to get people to think a second thought."

Conley, Abduallah and Wisam are all in their 20s and closely connected through new technology. But because of where they live or what they feel they've been called to do, they're also close to danger. All are on the move.

Wisam hopes to be out of Baghdad soon. "Next month I'll leave, Insha'Allah [God willing]," he said. He says he'd like to play the next "Grand Theft Auto," as would Abdullah. The games come out in the fall. In a sense that's close. But it's also far, far away.

More here, including the videos: http://aliveinbaghdad.org/

Thanks muchly.

Neighbors would cheerfully flash a familiar heavy-metal hand sign. "A lot of people wave the devil horns in Baghdad, and if the situation is a bit calmer and the security is a bit better, you can come and try it yourself."

This is awesome(and sad). Coalition troops need to hold Guitar Hero playoffs w/ the locals. It's like when you'd see vid of iraqis kicking around a football w/ off-duty British soldiers.

Hey Tom, how's Rocket Slime? Is it worth it? Can it actually keep your attention long enough to beat it?

the IGN review contains this sentence

above all else the game is just fun to play, moving and feeling very similar to a more mainstream version of Zelda

the last phrase of which does not compute.

kingfish prætor (kingfish 2.0), Tuesday, 9 January 2007 23:28 (eighteen years ago)

hey kingfish i thought rocket slime was totally fun, it's not gonna keep you immersed for weeks and weeks but definitely long enough to beat it.

The way I ended up getting a Wii was to look in all the places gamers wouldnt - department stores, that sort of thing. Which is where I ended up getting one, so it paid off.

Trayce (trayce), Saturday, 13 January 2007 03:57 (eighteen years ago)

i looked in TONS of places gamers wouldn't--under bridges, my neighbour's basement, big & tall men's clothing stores, a mcdonalds bathroom.

s1ocki (slutsky), Saturday, 13 January 2007 04:17 (eighteen years ago)

dude those places are always chock full of gamers and you damn well know it.

TOMB07 (TOMBOT), Saturday, 13 January 2007 06:14 (eighteen years ago)

I think the secret to scoring a Wii is to put your time-honored adventure/RPG skills to practice and talk to every single person you meet in every village you come across. One of them has to give you a clue. Fuck some fetch quests though.

TOMB07 (TOMBOT), Saturday, 13 January 2007 06:17 (eighteen years ago)

good idea. i went into a local game store and tried pushing against some irregularly-coloured panels but nothing doing. i smashed some of their boxes though and they were full of games. but dudes got kinda pissed and wouldn't let me add them to my inventory :(

s1ocki (slutsky), Saturday, 13 January 2007 16:44 (eighteen years ago)

This strategy always for me:

Head to your right. Knock out
the guard beside the truck and head south. In this area you will see three
dogs. Run down the center of the street and take the right path down and onto
the next street. Run past the dog here as well. You might have taken some
damage from the dogs, but don't worry, you'll get it back soon enough. Run
up next to the guard here and quickly punch him. Inside the truck you will
get ---Wii---

Prepare to quickly run down as soon as you exit the
truck and onto the next street. You will see two guards here. Wait until each
of them turns away from you and punch them out. Continue south. Punch the
sleeping dog and head south again. Pick a guard, punch him out, and head down.
More guards, you know what to do. Enter the top truck to get ---Extra game and WiiMote---.

You can thank me later.

Am playing Minish Cap. I think this is the first Zelda with hummel figurines.

kingfish prætor (kingfish 2.0), Thursday, 18 January 2007 06:33 (eighteen years ago)

Even though I'm not making much progress with my Wii, I've just bought a 360 with R6:Vegas, Gears, Lost Planet and Dead Rising. Excited.

cousin larry bundgee (bundgee), Thursday, 18 January 2007 07:13 (eighteen years ago)

my nephew got lucky the other day, walked into Gamestation and asked for a Wii. Got the last one in stock. But he's pretty sure the dumb shop keeper gave him someones reserved one.

God of War. It is amazing! Only starting out. Tips anyone?

Vice City still being tinkered with. It is so pretty and the music is so good that I hate to get out of the car. (That is probably the saddest thing I have ever written!)

Kv_nol (Kv_nol), Friday, 19 January 2007 10:22 (eighteen years ago)

They need to give the GTA characters headphones.

God of War is good. Dunno about tips so much.

Michael Philip Philip Philip Philip Annoyman (Ferg), Friday, 19 January 2007 11:17 (eighteen years ago)

I seem to remember on an old SA thread someone saying similar. I hate having to retune the radio!

I think by tips I mean is there a better way than just button mashing?! Not to worry, I've only had it a short while so I'll pick it up myself.

Kv_nol (Kv_nol), Friday, 19 January 2007 11:49 (eighteen years ago)

I just finished played Dragon Quest. 90 hours, and I didn't do everything (couldn't beat the first dragovian trial). Now I'm playing God of War.

a.b. (alanbanana), Friday, 19 January 2007 11:53 (eighteen years ago)

I am playing Dragon Quest now, I'm enjoying it but have a nagging fear that the repetitive Old Skool RPG aspect of it will eventually just cause me to lose interest involuntarily.

I button mashed mostly for God of War, but I never played it on the Now You need Counselling difficulty or anything.

(the bit in that where you get to the view of Athens from the clifftop for the first time is fucking awesome).

Michael Philip Philip Philip Philip Annoyman (Ferg), Friday, 19 January 2007 12:18 (eighteen years ago)

I still need to pick up the DQVIII. Gamecrazy had the thing used for like $15 or so.

kingfish prætor (kingfish 2.0), Friday, 19 January 2007 15:24 (eighteen years ago)

$15 and the next two months of your life.

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Friday, 19 January 2007 15:34 (eighteen years ago)

Alternating between GTA:SA and Tomb Raider Angel of Darkness. I'm about 2/3 of the way through either. I don't know why, but I'm being totally obsessed in an up 'till 2am just about every night way w/both games. I'm not usually this bad, even when I go nuts over some game or other.

Pashmina (Pashmina), Friday, 19 January 2007 15:37 (eighteen years ago)

GTA:SA -> The best game that has ever existed. It makes all other games look like shit. You'd spit on them so you would!

Kv_nol (Kv_nol), Friday, 19 January 2007 16:39 (eighteen years ago)

too right

Ste (Fuzzy), Friday, 19 January 2007 17:46 (eighteen years ago)

Forksclovetofu (Forksclovetofu), Tuesday, 23 January 2007 05:27 (eighteen years ago)

I'm working my way through Bully and quite enjoying it. It's basically just another GTA game in most respects, but fuck it, I like GTA games, and the Rushmore-ness makes it fun and original.

polyphonic (polyphonic), Tuesday, 23 January 2007 07:26 (eighteen years ago)

My internet connection was dead for three days so I spent my normal webmonging time digging around old games to find something I thought I could complete. I managed to get through 85/111 races on Need For Speed Underground and my car's a 5-star pimped up horrendous mess of a thing that hits 200mph :)

I want to finish it but it's getting too hard now :(

Ok, I can't find the game-trading thread. Anybody want to try out my copy of Metroid Pinball?

kingfish moose tracks (kingfish 2.0), Friday, 26 January 2007 19:07 (eighteen years ago)

Wii sports has a great learning curve; I'm really getting better daily at all the games.
Bowling finally made sense last night; I didn't get that the way to put spin on the ball was in the follow through. Now it's fun!

Forksclovetofu (Forksclovetofu), Friday, 26 January 2007 22:29 (eighteen years ago)

it's odd but very doable.
first post from a games system is mine! they apparently just made the opera browser available.
honestly, now that this thing is online, i've just been flabbergasted with its quality.
pretty good predictive text widget as well
code forthcoming

Forksclovetofu (Forksclovetofu), Sunday, 28 January 2007 03:12 (eighteen years ago)

Has anyone checked out the Wii news channel now it has gone online? We played around with it the other day and were disappointed the only Aus news on it was stuff about the tennis. Still, early days I guess.

Trayce (trayce), Sunday, 28 January 2007 04:25 (eighteen years ago)

It's interesting, but all AP. I like the interface a lot though.
Just bought zelda. I'm so easy.
Zelda II! Super Castlevania! SF II!

Forksclovetofu (Forksclovetofu), Sunday, 28 January 2007 04:55 (eighteen years ago)

oh man i bought a laptop a couple of weeks ago and just now got around to installing oblivion on it. i figured it would be about the same performance as my ~1 year old pc, but i decided to crank it up to 1200x800 and bloom and 6x aa and small textures etc for the hell of it. it runs so smoothly! i imagine i am going to be playing this a lot more :D

also playin zelda. the fishing is so hard! reeling things in tires my arms out incredibly quickly, guess i just need to get fitter

webber (webber), Sunday, 28 January 2007 08:47 (eighteen years ago)

the fishing in Contact kinds totally sucks. Too much like real fishing: cast, watch a little float do nothing for a while, it sinks, you pull, sometimes something comes up, a little over half the time you get fuck all. Lame.

TOMBO7 (TOMBOT), Sunday, 28 January 2007 15:31 (eighteen years ago)

but but but with real fishing you get to drink too much beer! then get bored and toss the dog in for laughs!

kingfish moose tracks (kingfish 2.0), Sunday, 28 January 2007 17:55 (eighteen years ago)

Ah! I just got Elite Beat Agents and New Super Mario Bros for Nintendo DS. EBA is REALLY FUN!!!

phil-two (phil-two), Monday, 29 January 2007 07:08 (eighteen years ago)

THIS is kinda what I wish I was playing...

CraigG (Craig Gilchrist), Monday, 29 January 2007 16:04 (eighteen years ago)

Bah. Too much junk in that stack.

kingfish moose tracks (kingfish 2.0), Monday, 29 January 2007 16:15 (eighteen years ago)

I tried playing EBA at a shop display last week and had no fucking clue what I was supposed to be doing.

TOMBO7 (TOMBOT), Monday, 29 January 2007 16:18 (eighteen years ago)

What is Elite Beat Agents?

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Monday, 29 January 2007 16:24 (eighteen years ago)

Jeez, I've already rescued 70+ slimes, this ain't a long game, is it?

kingfish moose tracks (kingfish 2.0), Monday, 29 January 2007 16:29 (eighteen years ago)

Bah. Too much junk in that stack.

Oh yeah, a lot of that pile are going to be AWFUL. But it's still pretty cool. At the rate it's going it'll sell for more than the original retail cost by the looks of things! (already up at $20 per game basically).

CraigG (Craig Gilchrist), Monday, 29 January 2007 16:31 (eighteen years ago)

But how many games would you actually play more than once?

kingfish moose tracks (kingfish 2.0), Monday, 29 January 2007 16:36 (eighteen years ago)

I just realize that like every NES title i'd want has either been reissued for the GBA or a flash cart would do the trick. I mean, you ain't gunna get everything, like the Goonies II or Faxanadu, but there's a lot of good in there.

kingfish moose tracks (kingfish 2.0), Monday, 29 January 2007 16:38 (eighteen years ago)

I just like the look of the accessories! Did anyone try the Wayne's World game? My curiosity is piqued!

Kv_nol (Kv_nol), Monday, 29 January 2007 16:49 (eighteen years ago)

xpost
Admittedly I'd probably just end up playing the ones I already own, as I already own most of the games I like from the NES. Still, there might be some surprises in there.

That said, I mostly just play NES games on my DS when on trains etc.

CraigG (Craig Gilchrist), Monday, 29 January 2007 16:58 (eighteen years ago)

NES ROMs.torrent

a.b. (alanbanana), Monday, 29 January 2007 18:10 (eighteen years ago)

I've played Wayne's World on emulator, I think it was a pointy-clicky adventure.

God Bows to Meth (noodle vague), Monday, 29 January 2007 19:15 (eighteen years ago)

What is Elite Beat Agents?

its kinda like Parappa the Rappa for DS. there are little circles around the stylus thing that you have to tap along with the beat, or do other things like follow it around in time, or do circle'y motion things. its fun! and ashlee simpson "la la" is one of the songs!

phil-two (phil-two), Monday, 29 January 2007 21:09 (eighteen years ago)

I think you'll be able to get most of that NES lineup on the wii within 12 or 13 months for $5 a game and no shelf space; I can wait.

Forksclovetofu (Forksclovetofu), Monday, 29 January 2007 22:02 (eighteen years ago)

UART variations (ex machina), Monday, 29 January 2007 23:36 (eighteen years ago)

Jeez, I've already rescued 70+ slimes, this ain't a long game, is it?

I've heard of people getting all 100 in like 10 hours, so no.

Marmot (marmotwolof), Monday, 29 January 2007 23:49 (eighteen years ago)

I've finally managed to return to Mario & Luigi: Partners In Time after the traumatic FORTY FIVE MINUTE BOSS FIGHT it took to beat Mrs Thwomp. Oh my god. The agony. *buries face in hands*

AND THEN just a 10 min romp downhill and then ANOTHER boss fight? Well I had to put it away.

I came back though. Bowser and Baby Bowser flattened up and rolled away! LOVE the cut scene music more than anything! Although this is the absolute WORST game to play when commuting because of stupid Save Points instead of being able to save anywhere - really, get OVER save points in portable games PLEASE PLEASE.

Otherwise I am playing Bubble Bobble or whatever fannydangle the DS version is called - Super Rainbow Ultra Puzzle Bobble Endless Art (Omnipotent Troll Mix).

Bhumibol Adulyadej (Lucretia My Reflection), Tuesday, 30 January 2007 09:15 (eighteen years ago)

Medal of Honour Rising Sun for PS2: How shit is it? Gameplay are offering it for £2.99 with free delivery.

Is Sensible Soccer 2006 as bad as the one that came out for the PS1? That's going for £4.99 delivered.

onimo (onimo), Thursday, 1 February 2007 20:25 (eighteen years ago)

i did not like that sensible soccer at all. if you have a x360, wait for it to come out on xb live arcade

Will M. (Will M.), Thursday, 1 February 2007 20:37 (eighteen years ago)

I bought a DS Lite and New Super Mario Bros. I beat NSMB in a day but I still have lots to do (like find world 7).

a.b. (alanbanana), Thursday, 1 February 2007 21:08 (eighteen years ago)

Complete World 5 as tiny Mario to get World 7, I think.

I got stuck on a level on World 8 and abandoned it :(

onimo (onimo), Thursday, 1 February 2007 21:12 (eighteen years ago)

Don't spoil it for me! The game is short enough as it is. (i don't think your tip is right; that's how you find world 4)

a.b. (alanbanana), Thursday, 1 February 2007 21:40 (eighteen years ago)

rio natsume (rio natsume), Thursday, 1 February 2007 22:23 (eighteen years ago)

Will Shortz is teaming up with Majesco to make an NYTimes Crossword game for the DS.

Will come with wifi for head-to-head action.

kingfishy (kingfish 2.0), Thursday, 1 February 2007 23:29 (eighteen years ago)

Hrm. Downloadable puzzles, though? They can't possibly give up the online subscriptions for that... Although at the same time .puz files are small, they could fit a bunch onto it. But also, the DS seems like a terrible platform for crosswording...

Casuistry (Chris P), Friday, 2 February 2007 02:58 (eighteen years ago)

how so? i would have thought it was the perfect platform! all the advantages of a pen but you can erase things and you can carry multiple puzzles around with you! it should include some sort of scribbling in the margin feature tho

zappi (joni), Friday, 2 February 2007 13:20 (eighteen years ago)

Looking at games last night in PC world & HMV, didn't see much new I fancied, tbh, though zlol @ "lula 3d", omgwtf. I want to get "Tomb Raider: Legend" though as most of the stuff I've read abt it suggest that though it's a lot of fun, it can be completed in less than a week, I don't fancy paying full retail for that. "black and white" and "Fable" look/ed kind of interesting. Has anyone played through them?

Pashmina (Pashmina), Friday, 2 February 2007 13:31 (eighteen years ago)

Black & White turned out to be not the brilliantly life changing oh noes gaming will never be the same again game everyone said it would be, but it's about £3 and is great fun, looks nice, and lasts forever.

onimo (onimo), Friday, 2 February 2007 15:05 (eighteen years ago)

Because you can't see the whole crossword puzzle at once, nor scan all the clues over quickly. And I always worry about text recognition.

It took me a while to get used to doing them on the computer, which is convenient but definately not as good as on paper. But this sounds like doing puzzles through a keyhole!

Casuistry (Chris P), Friday, 2 February 2007 15:31 (eighteen years ago)

I've mostly been playing 'Castlevania: portrait of Ruin' (on my lunchbreaks) on the DS, and Zelda and Madden on the Wii. I'm surprised at how much fun Madden is! I'm still rubbish at it though.

CraigG (Craig Gilchrist), Friday, 9 February 2007 11:43 (eighteen years ago)

I'm so tempted on Madden. Is the single player good though? There's no chance I'll be able to persuade my friends to play it.

melton mowbray's APOCALYPTO! (adr), Friday, 9 February 2007 12:35 (eighteen years ago)

Yeah, I mean I guess it depends on how well you know Madden games. I've not played one since '95 or something. But I've been enjoying the single player, even though I haven't won a game yet (my reactions are too slow from the calm pace of Pro Evo so I keep getting sacked going for any passes...). But it's really good fun, and satisfying when you get a big run/touchdown or even just a down.

CraigG (Craig Gilchrist), Friday, 9 February 2007 13:00 (eighteen years ago)

I've not played one since '95 or something.

Haha, I've not played one since the Megadrive one that came as a "double header" with NHL, though this week I bought '97. I'm seriously contemplating it though - are the remote gestures as great as they sound?

Playing DS is almost ruined for me by people who try and watch what you're doing on the bus/subway/etc. YEAH ITS A VIDEO GAME NOW MOVE ALONG. See also: kids looking and then their parents pulling them away because CLEARLY i am using it as a pedophilic trap to lure thme in and put it in their butts

Will M., Thursday, 22 February 2007 17:43 (eighteen years ago)

wow, i totally rock at zelda. who knew!

i really need to play some other game that uses the wiimote to greater advantage. suggestions? (I have some other kiddy games - rabbids, smooth moves, monkeyball)

Alan, Friday, 23 February 2007 09:54 (eighteen years ago)

TANX! On my Amiga em, what a truly wonderful two player game this is/was. The simple ideas are the best eh.

I think it even beats Scorched Earth, maybe something to do with the glossier graphics and scrolly game arena

Ste, Friday, 23 February 2007 11:48 (eighteen years ago)

Sam and Max episode 4: best one yet! As zany as I wanted the rest to be.

abanana, Friday, 23 February 2007 15:45 (eighteen years ago)

hey there
just finished minish cap, and now ocarina has popped up on vc. timing!
and just when you thought sony couldn't fuck over their euro fans any more

zappi, Friday, 23 February 2007 15:51 (eighteen years ago)

oh, and looks like neo geo games are coming to vc soon. so... anyone ever played any?

zappi, Friday, 23 February 2007 16:05 (eighteen years ago)

and just when you thought sony couldn't fuck over their euro fans any more

Yet more evidence for TOMBOT's "PS3 = horrible piece of shit" thread that I cba reviving.

UK pre-order prices for this are stupid scary, e.g.

http://www.gamestation.co.uk/images/main/Combos/PS3-combo-04.jpg

That's $1,109! So about $500-600 for 4 games.

onimo, Friday, 23 February 2007 16:25 (eighteen years ago)

UK Resistance is on a crusade against the PS3.

abanana, Friday, 23 February 2007 17:12 (eighteen years ago)

samurai shodown for the neo geo is supposedly ace but I'm not into fighters!

TOMBOT, Friday, 23 February 2007 18:11 (eighteen years ago)

I like Last Blade 2 better personally

Will M., Friday, 23 February 2007 20:06 (eighteen years ago)

samurai showdown 2 was the best neo-geo game evar, and got me thru 2 years of engineering school.

kingfish, Saturday, 24 February 2007 10:07 (eighteen years ago)

Yeah, Samurai Shodown = amazing, also King of Fighters, duh!

Will they be putting Metal Slug on the VC, or not bother because of the Metal Slug Anthology that's being released soon?

melton mowbray, Saturday, 24 February 2007 14:59 (eighteen years ago)

yay i got an adaptor for my xbox so i can use my usb keyboard now with my Amiga games. Pinball Dreams/Fantasies is so excellent.

Alan, Monday, 26 February 2007 15:03 (eighteen years ago)

so i've just started ocarina for the first time, and ..... good god this game is UGLY. and SLOW.

zappi, Monday, 26 February 2007 15:22 (eighteen years ago)

Okay, I'm pretty hooked on Zelda now.

I'm stuck, and getting more and more angry every time I try to cross Hyrule Field back to the village. Burning wagons suck.

I got my impressionable kids Smackdown Here Comes The Pain for cheapo on eBay after sandboxers told me there was no swearing. There isn't.

Happy memories of discussing easily broken prop chairs... Hardly our fault that you didn't play it through first. You're not meant to give people gifts without trying them out ffs :)

I'm playing The Simpsons: Hit and Run on PS2. It's like a stress free version of GTA. I love the way I'm so behind the loop on this board!

kv_nol, Tuesday, 27 February 2007 09:08 (eighteen years ago)

The Simpsons: Hit and Run on PS2. It's like a stress free version of GTA

You're joking right? I found this far more head twatting than GTA, what with all the timed missions. It's still great though, one of the most succesful GTA clones, with cool Simpsons parathanalia

Ste, Tuesday, 27 February 2007 10:55 (eighteen years ago)

The wagon pursuit across hyrule field was aces! you are using your boomerang, right? the key is that the horses pulling the wagon will circle back around if the birds bomb them. if thee birds don't bomb they move on a bit more...

TOMBOT, Tuesday, 27 February 2007 14:53 (eighteen years ago)

I suppose it's kind of a neat thing about Zelda that practically everything seems like a spoiler. every little thing has its own discovery/surprise high

TOMBOT, Tuesday, 27 February 2007 14:54 (eighteen years ago)

I beat my 5 year old son in a 6 man tag match and made him cry :(

You are a bad mang. Also I hope that this was in-game rather than in the back garden as discussed on the other thread.

Ste, it's great. You only need 7 cards and things. Also shit people, I'm driving in Springfield!!!

kv_nol, Tuesday, 27 February 2007 15:01 (eighteen years ago)

Yes, in game. He's a really bad loser - he tries his best to suck it up and not cry but he can't help it. He's a really bad winner as well, jumps about shouting "LOSER!" and doing the L thing on his forehead. I blame the parents.

onimo, Tuesday, 27 February 2007 15:08 (eighteen years ago)

Dude! I didn't even know about the arrows yet! SPOILER SPOILER

forksclovetofu, Tuesday, 27 February 2007 15:29 (eighteen years ago)

hell yes, the wagon pursuit was a total best gaming moment 2007 type thing. i wish it went on for longer and was a bit harder.

rio natsume, Tuesday, 27 February 2007 15:34 (eighteen years ago)

I am so tempted to post Zelda spoilers now! But I won't, because I remember how great it was being surprised (definitely some of the most entertaining/surprising items found in a Zelda game coming up).

nickalicious, Tuesday, 27 February 2007 15:40 (eighteen years ago)

gff, Tuesday, 27 February 2007 17:25 (eighteen years ago)

^^^ seriously that shit was scary!! all the other tests are like la de da, drive around the corner. and then it's like, here's a twisty ass alleyway as wide as your car going up and downhill, here's an ancient alfa romeo that handles like a uhaul, plz go 740 mph or fail.

though what's scarier is imagining the gnarled, sunless autists who have actually got golds on these tests.

FWIW, I'm still not finished with that scene, but it's going to blow your mind.

I wish I could use my Wii to see the looks on all your guys' faces when you get the [ITEM] in [LATER DUNGEON IN TWILIGHT PRINCESS], because the look on my face was probably fucking hilarious. First time in a Zelda game I literally yelled WOOHOO at the screen.

z:tp - i have got to the first point that i am stuck getting past a baddie :-(

Alan, Wednesday, 28 February 2007 12:11 (eighteen years ago)

I am thinking of getting Lego Star Wars for the GC - what thinks ILG? Good idea?

Otherwise more DS recommendations please!

I have got to the final FINAL boss on Mario & Luigi: Partner's In Time but can't be bothered beating it... it takes so looong! And it's booring! And all that will happen is "hooray you win I suppose". Perhaps in another couple of months I'll have the energy to bother!

Sarah, Wednesday, 28 February 2007 14:10 (eighteen years ago)

Uh oh Alan, are you saying there's a tough boss fight coming up in this game? It better not be that troll fucker on the hog again.

I am of the opinion that it is more or less impossible to go wrong with Lego Star Wars but I haven't played the GC version, just the PS2 one (no humanly noticeable differences I suspect)

TOMBOT, Wednesday, 28 February 2007 15:04 (eighteen years ago)

it's not even a proper boss nor one of those mid-level types, just some hard-nut grunt. in snowpeak someplace. sure i'm missing an obvious move.

Alan, Wednesday, 28 February 2007 17:04 (eighteen years ago)

When me & the boy play Lego Star Wars 2 we probably spend at least 10 minutes or so each session in Jabba's palace making the pig dudes rock out to the metalled up imperial march theme. I haven't noticed any differences in the GC vs PS2 version (apart from controls [fwiw there aren't any actions you can do in one game that you can't in the other).

nickalicious, Wednesday, 28 February 2007 17:07 (eighteen years ago)

nickalicious, Thursday, 1 March 2007 22:14 (eighteen years ago)

Shit gff! Glad I copped on and skimmed. I'm looking for a second hand copy like a fool. Seems like ebay my only choice sadly enough.

This weekend I started and finished Destroy all Humans. It was great! Fairly easy though. I'm now planning on doing a Ste on it and finding all the probes. The dialogue and sounds were fantastic as were the random thoughts. Best part: "How am I to run in these shoes? Shiny shiny shoes!"

Still waiting for ICO the first one. Very excited about it! Will then probably buy Okami. I'm feeling more like atmospheric games then OTT FPS, this is all to get me suitably relaxed before God of War 2 arrives I cannot wait for that game!

kv_nol, Monday, 5 March 2007 12:00 (eighteen years ago)

Sorry gff, forgot a smily thing after the the skimmed so it should really read:

Shit gff! Glad I copped on and skimmed ;)

Carry on...

kv_nol, Monday, 5 March 2007 12:00 (eighteen years ago)

My internet connection was dead for three days so I spent my normal webmonging time digging around old games to find something I thought I could complete. I managed to get through 85/111 races on Need For Speed Underground and my car's a 5-star pimped up horrendous mess of a thing that hits 200mph :)

I want to finish it but it's getting too hard now :(

Yay I finally finished it! This may be the first driving game I've properly completed since Super Monaco GP on the Megadrive!

I started NFSU2 on the PS2 last night - got through 15 or so races and I'm hating the night-time-blurry-rainy-can't-see-a-fucking-thing graphics.

onimo, Monday, 5 March 2007 12:31 (eighteen years ago)

i started it too, a couple of months ago. I really like the night time graphics and the driving handling is simply gorgeous. I just fucking hate the drag races, I can't even do the first one.

Ste, Monday, 5 March 2007 13:43 (eighteen years ago)

oh man so sorry guys!! i thought i was the last person here to play it.

gran turismo 4 is sooo frustrating, you have no idea. i don't know how they expect normal humans to do some of this shit. snow races = torture

gff, Monday, 5 March 2007 15:16 (eighteen years ago)

It's cool... it's a game I don't think I'll EVER finish. While it is pretty fun, I really didn't like running around a grass field for hours. And I didn't play it for the story-- I played it for the badass battles. The worst spoiler would be saying how to beat baddies and that.

Will M., Monday, 5 March 2007 15:27 (eighteen years ago)

oh man i can't stand not finishing a game, nor for the challenge of it or anything, but because i always feel like i want to see everything that's been put in it. plus i'm impatient. so i gave each colossus a good 45 mins of scurrying about frantically trying to find the right trick before running off to gamefaqs. knowing what to didn't make it any easier TO do it, or any less fun, for me. the game is so pretty and graceful i just liked seeing it all. i highly recommend getting thru to the ending, it's really very good.

the same with GTA:SA, really. i'll be fucked if i'm going to spend hours and hours hunting for 100 gang tags when i can just get a map of them. i get to see all the hidden details of the city all the same!

gff, Monday, 5 March 2007 16:48 (eighteen years ago)

Alan, Tuesday, 6 March 2007 11:27 (eighteen years ago)

Didn't realise Lego Star Wars 2 for the GC was so hard to get hold of - I can either drop £35 notes or go whistle. I suppose £35 or so isn't that bad, but given that I usually balk at paying over £20 for a videogame I'm still hesitant. Haha, this attitude explains why I am always so far behind the crowd I suppose, but d00ds, videogames be EXPENSIVE. It is much better with the lovely non-region specific DS where I actually stand a chance of not getting ripped off if I can bear to wait a couple of weeks for postage.

ANYWAY, is Lego Star Wars 2 worth me paying £35 odd. (like SIXTY DOLLARS - changing things into the dollar price is K-sobering!)

Sarah, Tuesday, 6 March 2007 14:18 (eighteen years ago)

J, Tuesday, 13 March 2007 20:44 (eighteen years ago)

Currently playing through Lego Star Wars II. It is incredibly fun, but so far the Empire Strikes back levels have kind of sucked. Degobah is terrible and I'm not sure how to finish it!

'Completed' Lego Star Wars 2! Well, completed the story in it's most basic way, still have kit to collect and I want to complete more levels with a higher Jedi score. LOVED the game, apart from all the shooty shooty levels - don't like flying around shooting things, am rubbish at them. Finished the shooty shooty levels with 0 jedi points each time! HAH! That shows THEM.

Also got caught out by two BUGS - one when I accidentally rolled R2D2 into the swamp right at the end of Degobah, couldn't get OUT, couldn't swap back to any of the characters still on land, had to quit and do the entire level ALL OVER AGAIN, losing one bit of the Lego Kit I dunno how I managed to get the first time. ARGH BASTARD BASTARD. The last one was on the final level on my way out of the Death Star where I kept looping back and looping back but then I somehow managed to get out of it thank goodness.

Now I have started "Pokemon Rescue Mystery Dungeon" and so far YE GODS it is pish...

Sarah, Monday, 26 March 2007 10:04 (eighteen years ago)

*ping* oh there he is. Hi Gr3g.

Don't you have to find the appropriate red brick to unlock things like kit detectors in LSW2?

I unlocked invincibility which made getting true jedi on shooty levels dead easy.

Hint for getting stuck in buggy bits: press start on your other controller to bring in P2 and then drop out P1. I had to do that after someone got stuck on a piece of flat grass.

onimo, Monday, 26 March 2007 14:16 (eighteen years ago)

Argh!! Internet Explorer ate at my post! RIGHT, the cut down version:

1/ I think I only have 1 or 2 red bricks, shame
2/ I only have one controller - I am only child - shame
3/ Where is invincibility made?

Here is another unrelated question - is there anything out now like the Fr33l04der for Wii games? I've never needed/bothered with one for the Cube but if I'm forking out for a Wii there is no way I will be patient enough to wait for loads of put back EU games (I are thinking Super Paper Mario woooo). Then again, it's yet ANOTHER "no honestly, it's for the wii, it's not just a gamecube thing hastily tarted up" affair so... although I bet they won't RELEASE it for the GC... argh! My head.

Sarah, Monday, 26 March 2007 14:25 (eighteen years ago)

Also no turn based fighting = wha? I like pokemon-style-fighting...

Sarah, Monday, 26 March 2007 14:27 (eighteen years ago)

Invincibility brick - Episode 4 Chapter 5 - Death Star Escape. Exit garbage crusher, turn left, open door, (needs C3P0 so do it in Free Play mode) to go into the next garbage thingy, build a fridge, open it with the Force, get one red brick. You can now buy invincibility in the Cantina.

Bought the first Fire Emblem GBA game yesterday, and been playing that for a bit.

The Fire Emblem Wii game is already out in japan, no other release dates set yet:

I am going to order Pokemon Pearl fairly soon.

Oh, no I'm not "this product cannot be shipped to the European Union".

*gives up, cross*

Sarah, Monday, 16 April 2007 15:04 (eighteen years ago)

fire emblem looks rub. then again (as i keep saying) i don't like video games.

Alan, Monday, 16 April 2007 16:36 (eighteen years ago)

the Fire Emblem GBA games are kinda neat, in that you have little guys on a battlefield who switch into little mini-animated battles.

kingfish, Monday, 16 April 2007 16:43 (eighteen years ago)

I am playing Hotel Dusk right now actually, Sarah. It is quite fun if you're into the lucasartsy adventure type thing (except instead of that kind of atmosphere it's this late 70s ex-NY detective acting all hard-boiled in a California motel). There are a few parts so far (QUITE a few) where i've been completely stuck and wandered and knocked on the smae stupid doors for hours until I found one little thing I was forgetting/missing. It's not super forgiving if you lose your place story-wise... but if you don't mind checking a faq every once in a while you'll be ok. Speaking of which...

oh and yeah... I'm getting Pokemon Pearl too.

Will M., Monday, 16 April 2007 17:45 (eighteen years ago)

I've beaten Hotel Dusk. I got stuck (as in looking up GameFAQs stuck; I did end up wandering here and there) exactly once on the one bullshit puzzle that everyone gets stuck on. I thought it was a lot easier than Lucasarts or Gabriel Knight games.

FUCK A WII. :(

(I'd look for one this Spring)

James Mitchell, Wednesday, 18 April 2007 18:10 (eighteen years ago)

By 'that bullshit puzzle everyone gets stuck on' do you mean THE puzzle? as in jigsaw puzzle? someone told me the function you need to use to do that, but not to what part of the game said function was in reference. So it was pretty obvious to me what I had to do. The thing I REALLY got stuck on was the writing on the stupid pen.

Will M., Thursday, 19 April 2007 17:39 (eighteen years ago)

Nah, I got the jigsaw puzzle right away. I meant the writing on the stupid pen.

El Tomboto, Tuesday, 28 August 2007 18:07 (eighteen years ago)

I am playing Madden, Forza, Gears of War, Geometry Wars, Table Tennis, Pac Man CE, Space Giraffe, and a few other random things. My housemate is playing Elder Scrolls: Oblivion, which is the Ren Faire-est thing I've ever seen.

polyphonic, Tuesday, 28 August 2007 18:14 (eighteen years ago)

I am basically doing the same thing with games as I am with books. I did, however, finally throw final fantasy tactics back in the ps2 to finish the fucker off once and for all. I am determined that rogue galaxy will be finished to my satisfaction before I start anything (FF12) else. Ocarina of Time and Dark Cloud 2 will probably have to wait. I am considering picking up Front Mission 4 again and starting over now that I have a better tv with component input to play it on, maybe it will look less muddy and impossible?

(bookwise, I have uncommon carriers, why things bite back, and jailbird sitting in various states of completion, and I just started normal accidents. pathetic.)

El Tomboto, Tuesday, 28 August 2007 19:13 (eighteen years ago)

Madden, God of War II, Excitetruck + SSX wii wait in the wings, back on guitar hero again.

Tomb Raider Anniversary - After an hour had to stop playing. Way to stressful! Fantastic graphics and the sound is really effective!

I am at the final bosses of Final Fantasy X-2. If I play one mission per sitting, it is entertainingly stupid. If I play it any longer I get brain damage.

ILG, tell me which game from my ps2 backlog I should play next. I'm looking for something fairly short but also something I can just goof around in.

shadow of the colossus
rogue galaxy
jak 2
resident evil 4
devil may cry
san andreas
disgaea

abanana, Wednesday, 12 September 2007 00:07 (eighteen years ago)

goof around = san andreas.

John Justen, Wednesday, 12 September 2007 00:30 (eighteen years ago)

fairly short = not rogue galaxy

El Tomboto, Wednesday, 12 September 2007 00:35 (eighteen years ago)

Rogue Galaxy is like Trace Memory compared to Persona 3. RE4 could take about 20 hours first time through, San Andreas is 40-50 if you're just doing missions. DMC and Shadow are probably the shortest things on there. I haven't played Jak 2, but if it's anything like the first it can't be very long either.

marmotwolof, Wednesday, 12 September 2007 01:07 (eighteen years ago)

I'm so out of playing games lately, I've delved into Vice City Stories for a short while but still nowhere near the evening marathon ventures i'm used to.

I need to load up counterstrike sauce for quick fix

Ste, Wednesday, 12 September 2007 09:42 (eighteen years ago)

Even though I got a new 360, I've still mostly been focusing on Persona 3 because it's... so... good. I'm about 10 hours in (it says 18 because last night I left it on overnight because I was too tired to save-- can you save anywhere other than Tartarus?!) and I just got to the subway scene, which I think is the end of the first month. Are there 12 months or does the game continue even after that?!

Will M., Wednesday, 12 September 2007 15:13 (eighteen years ago)

I had heard it lasts one school year. I was thinking about picking it up, but after reading the recent reports on here on just how long the game is, I'm sort of glad I skipped. "78 hours and no end in sight!" That's too long!!!

I still need to finish San Andreas

Jeff LeVine, Wednesday, 12 September 2007 15:54 (eighteen years ago)

The good thing about Persona 3 is that it's super episodic. You could totally play this game in 20 minute chunks and be completely content, I reckon.

Will M., Wednesday, 12 September 2007 15:56 (eighteen years ago)

wait abanana -- in that tetris video how the hell does he do it when the blocks are INVISIBLE???

(between the entry point and where he slots it in, I mean)

El Tomboto, Wednesday, 12 September 2007 17:23 (eighteen years ago)

His eyes are likely focused on the Next box in the main game, so it wouldn't be that much more difficult.

abanana, Wednesday, 12 September 2007 17:56 (eighteen years ago)

Oh, I beat Super Robot Taisen Original Generation 2 for the GBA today. It may be the best tactical RPG I've ever played. SO satisfying.

Will M., Wednesday, 12 September 2007 18:46 (eighteen years ago)

I'm 83 hours into Persona now, but the main reason it's taking so long is that I'm trying to complete Tartarus and there's over 250 floors. I'm on 211. I know a guy who gave up on Tartarus and just finished the main story in less than 70, so there you go.

Will, you can save at the front desk in the dorm, and that's the main place you'll be saving. Don't try to go to Tartarus every night, you'll just get Sick. Look at the Calendar in the System menu to see how long the game lasts and what your schedule is. It's one school year - in JAPAN, so 12 months including a one month summer vacation.

marmotwolof, Wednesday, 12 September 2007 21:09 (eighteen years ago)

waaaoooo~ they have 13 months in japan?

but yeah... i would just save every time i went to tartarus, which was only when I was "good" or "great" and even then, it was like once an hour (one day, maybe two separated every time) so it wasn't too big of an issue, except for the two times I started falling asleep while playing (RPGs literally make me fall asleep now. it's awful).

Will M., Wednesday, 12 September 2007 22:42 (eighteen years ago)

including, not in addition to

marmotwolof, Wednesday, 12 September 2007 23:00 (eighteen years ago)

And you don't start the next year of school after summer vacation like you do here, you just start the second term. Your next year of schooling starts immediately following Spring break in April:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Academic_term#Japan

I don't know how you got 10 hours in thinking you could only save in Tartarus, that would've driven me insane. Even with the Dorm lobby point there aren't enough save opportunities. Some of the big battles with the cutscenes before and after can run up to 90 minutes without a chance to save.

marmotwolof, Wednesday, 12 September 2007 23:07 (eighteen years ago)

VC news : japan only games (mario lost levels, sin & punishment) being released in europe but only available for the next 3 weeks, and turbografx CD/turboduo games to be released soon - already confirmed is Campest Game Ever (tm) Choko Aniki!!!!

zappi, Friday, 14 September 2007 16:29 (eighteen years ago)

I've played through the first couple chapters of Heavenly Sword. It's a great looking game and pretty fun and pretty easy, so far, maybe too easy. I hear it's quite short, so I'm trying to limit myself to only playing a chapter a night. The weirdest thing about it for me is that you don't look around with the right stick - you use that for rolling - so you can only turn your head a ways left or right with the triggers - kinda clunky. The game also has the dumbest puzzles I can remember seeing - mostly just throwing hats at gongs! But some of the environments you get to run around in are the best looking I've ever seen.

The weirdest thing about it for me is that you don't look around with the right stick - you use that for rolling - so you can only turn your head a ways left or right with the triggers - kinda clunky.

You've never played God of War? It's exactly like that, only you can't even look with the triggers. My copy of this is on the way.

I got the "cop-out" ending to Persona last night in 92 hours, but I am a compulsive level grinder and NPC chatter. Looks like another 5-10 hours for the real ending, as it requires that you finish Tartarus.

marmotwolof, Friday, 14 September 2007 21:17 (eighteen years ago)

Lately I've just gotten so used to left stick to move character, right stick to move the camera, that everything else (in a 3D game) feels a little weird - a little constricted. It doesn't break the game for me or anything though. I was trying to remember other games that were set up the same way - it's been a long time since I play GoW...

Jeff LeVine, Friday, 14 September 2007 21:34 (eighteen years ago)

Congrats on finishing P3! What's the difference between the endings?

Jeff LeVine, Friday, 14 September 2007 21:39 (eighteen years ago)

Well, the one I just got was quite the cop-out - you can choose to forget everything that's happened and go on living as a regular student, oblivious to the impending Armageddon. The good one requires you to fight against Death itself, "Nyx," which is lying in wait at the top of Tartarus. I'll let you know when I get there.

marmotwolof, Friday, 14 September 2007 21:47 (eighteen years ago)

two weeks pass...

Broke out GoldenEye last night with friends for a 90-minute mini-marathon that began at 10pm, and much mirth was had. Suffice it to say, I came to work late today.

Tight controls, great gameplay, my biggest complaint only is that the graphics be sharpened, because I was having the hardest time telling my teammate from the other team -- and he was using JAWS.

HI DERE, Tuesday, 8 January 2008 04:51 (seventeen years ago)

xpost

It's a scuba-diving explore 'em up with yr archetypal Japanese emo plot. You get to meet whales and train dolphins and stuff, as well as exploring undersea ruins, caves etc. No aggro, and in theory you can do as little or as much as you like. Having said that, I finished the central quest and got the credits up on Sunday night, so the central story arc isn't very long. But judging by my book of found artefacts and sea creatures there's still lots of things to discover. It's not the greatest thing ever made but if you like non-violent ambient games it's pretty nice.

Noodle Vague, Tuesday, 8 January 2008 09:39 (seventeen years ago)

I'm thinking about picking Endless Ocean up when it comes out in the States, and if my wife ever gets sick of Rock Band I might actually be able to play it at some point.

Noodle Vague, Thursday, 10 January 2008 10:46 (seventeen years ago)

zack & wiki is a point & click puzzle adventure, like an updated lucasarts game (who really should put monkey island games etc on wiiware). the presentation & voiceacting are overcute & twee, but the actual puzzles are very well designed & get quite tough. its probably the best 3rd party wii game i've played (not saying much i know...)

Zack and wiki is terribly fun. Can't wait for MLK weekend to engage.

forksclovetofu, Wednesday, 16 January 2008 19:34 (seventeen years ago)

k I have Zack and Wiki. Haven't played it enough to do a thread yet, but the learning curve is almost too gentle maybe, the script is pretty weak so far and it isn't really a point and click in the oldschool sense. And yet...it is fun. And I have a hunch it's gonna get pretty deep.

Noodle Vague, Thursday, 24 January 2008 18:49 (seventeen years ago)

k I've played a few levels now and this is brilliant. Some really clever uses of the Wiimote, and some puzzles that need thinking thru but are solveable and make you feel like Captain Smartass when you get them right. It's maybe a bit linear, and it sacrifices Monkey Island-like plotting for pure puzzling, but this is pretty much fun in a bun.

Noodle Vague, Saturday, 26 January 2008 10:34 (seventeen years ago)

ZakWiki is amazing--so simple but so brilliant. And the controls are definitely intuitive for 95% of it.

Just one thing--don't give in and look online for cheats, it ruins the extreme satisfaction you get finishing the whole thing. There are a few levels where things are really bizarre.

If you need a hint, post here! I can try to be somewhat oblique so as not to ruin it completely.

Advance Wars, the first one. So far all of the stages require a 'trick' to solve, and combat strategy doesn't matter much otherwise. Really fun for 1 level per sitting.

Final Fantasy III DS. The bad old days of console RPGs. I just got to a place where if you don't have a white or red mage, you get stuck and have to load a saved game (assuming you didn't overwrite it).

Simon Tatham's Portable Puzzle Collection. Loopy (Slitherlink) and Slant especially.

abanana, Saturday, 9 February 2008 08:01 (seventeen years ago)

I suck at Advance Wars (all of them). I like the games, and enjoy them up until the point (only about 7-10 stages in, for me) where I begin losing 90% of the time. One particularly miserable day I lost a single mission several times in a row, got disgusted, pathetically used StumbleUpon to find a random online game, did the "IQ challenge", and only found 3 F's in a sentence that clearly had 6. Time to go back to bed FTW.

wooo zack & wiki is great. Only problem is, have promised the boy that I won't play it without him. So now its past his bedtime I'm bored. boo.

I need 3 more pieces of the piratey dude in Zack and Wiki. I've only looked at one tiny interweb hint which was some frankly ridiculous shit involving Captain Rose. Don't think replay value is gonna be massive on this tbh so might trade it towards Bully when I'm done.

i got Mario Kart Wii yesterday.
first impressions : far too slow. some lol mii integration into the environments. graphics are pretty ugly. the DS version is WAY better than this.
in summary, :/

zappi, Tuesday, 8 April 2008 15:35 (seventeen years ago)

Now that the patch for MLB 2K8 has been released, it's a pretty solid game. The pitching/batting interface is kinda like "Skate" (which I love). It's tough to navigate the menus and read captions on a standard TV, and a lot of the design choices are heinous, but it's a solid game of baseball when you add the patch update. Still sucks that they haven't updated the rosters, though.

polyphonic, Tuesday, 8 April 2008 16:43 (seventeen years ago)

zappi - are you using the wheel? If yes - does it feel stupid, or does it feel okay?

Jeff LeVine, Tuesday, 8 April 2008 17:36 (seventeen years ago)

I'm very on the fence about Mario Kart after the disappointment of Smash Bros. This time I'll wait and see if the online works okay - otherwise, I'll just stick to my beloved Mario Kart 64

Jeff LeVine, Tuesday, 8 April 2008 18:01 (seventeen years ago)

Yeah, I tried Smash Brothers at my pal's house and was pretty disappointed. It didn't seem like it used the Wiimote functionality at all.

polyphonic, Tuesday, 8 April 2008 18:15 (seventeen years ago)

I find Smash hell of fun but I agree that it is basically the same game as the Gamecube version except with more toys / characters (the fact that it plays far better with a Gamecube controller than with the actual Wii controllers is even clearer evidence of this). Since I've only played it locally I haven't experience any of the issues with online play but my Wii-owning friends state that it's hassle enough not to bother with. It definitely doesn't embrace the Wii's unique features but OTOH have any of the other big-name Nintendo titles out on the Wii so far done so either? The best contender I can think of is Metroid Prime 3....

Matt D, Tuesday, 8 April 2008 18:52 (seventeen years ago)

wheel is stupid, i refuse to use. actually the motion control works ok, tho i'm mainly using classic controller.
game has pretty good online features shock horror, ghost data, rankings etc. no problem with matchups either so far.
still too slow though. boo.

zappi, Tuesday, 8 April 2008 22:21 (seventeen years ago)

is there any adaptor to play game boy games on a DS? just wondering.

i've never liked smash bros in any of its incarnations.

darraghmac, Tuesday, 8 April 2008 22:43 (seventeen years ago)

What is shock horror?

Will M., Wednesday, 9 April 2008 14:20 (seventeen years ago)

an expression of surprise.
what i should have said was : Mario Kart is the first Wii game to have online features that feel like they've actually made an effort. for once.
hey, Rock Band in the UK is going to cost £180 ie £360!!!

zappi, Wednesday, 9 April 2008 15:32 (seventeen years ago)

(ie $360)

zappi, Wednesday, 9 April 2008 15:34 (seventeen years ago)

Jordan, Tuesday, 15 April 2008 18:14 (seventeen years ago)

Nothing but MLB 2K8 until GTA4 comes out. It's a little unsatisfying but whatever.

I tried playing Irakuga or whatever but it's impossible.

polyphonic, Tuesday, 15 April 2008 18:29 (seventeen years ago)

czn - what are the different modes like in Space Invaders Extreme? Is it out over there already, or did you import from Japan or are you just playing the demo? It looks interesting - just not sure if there is going to be enough there to justify a purchase (it's not out over here for another month)...

Jeff LeVine, Tuesday, 15 April 2008 19:45 (seventeen years ago)

I am playing a *cough*ROM*cough* and haven't had a delve into the other modes just yet - been concentrating on the single player... only playing intermittently, and very slowly making my way through it... but I like the redesigned visuals and nice audio touches i.e. it's done it that post-rez way where the sound syncs with the visuals... probably better to rent than buy tbh but w/downloads all games ain't no thing

czn, Tuesday, 15 April 2008 19:56 (seventeen years ago)

I love my DS Lite.

phoenix wright 3 -- I forgot how slow the text speed is in these. still good. almost done of it.

prof. layton -- this game blows. A whole bunch of puzzle chestnuts that I never wanted to see again. the videos are pretty, though.

NY Times Crosswords -- still awesome. 1000+ puzzles!!! there's a code you can find on gamefaqs that turns off the lunchroom theme so you can do crosswords in black & white like god intended.

abanana, Tuesday, 15 April 2008 21:25 (seventeen years ago)

oh that would be great, b&w would make it so much better.

zappi, Saturday, 19 April 2008 17:13 (seventeen years ago)

I played some Dragon Quest Swords last night and it was OK fun but it has a serious issue in that the entire atmosphere is just a reminder that you're not playing a REAL Dragon Quest game. Good music, excellent gameplay, everything is actually quite topnotch but fuck this, I want another real DQ RPG, not an arcade rails shooter with a miniscule dash of RPG seasoning.

El Tomboto, Sunday, 20 April 2008 04:46 (seventeen years ago)

I could actually do a bit of an essay on this problem as it affects Wii titles, in fact, but not right now

El Tomboto, Sunday, 20 April 2008 04:46 (seventeen years ago)

Been playing Mario Kart Wii for a few days now. The wheel is fun, if you can remember not to press the arrow buttons instead by mistake. I do miss some of the fun stuff from Double Dash, though. Also they've introduced a shitload of stuff in the weapons/prizes/whatever you call em that totally fucks you up if you're out in front - things that only affect drivers in front of you. I guess it evens things out a bit more.

Anyway, my big gripe is I can't work out how to unlock any of the ?? cups. Online forums say you have to place in top 3 on the cups but I've done this, in 100 and 150cc, and nothing's happening :( Any help?

I've heard really mixed things about PES 2008, some people love the new mechanic and some hate it. I'd rent both games first.

Will M., Wednesday, 11 June 2008 15:13 (seventeen years ago)

Been playing Phoenix Wright 3 (Trials and Tribulations, aka the one with Godot), fun stuff as expected - feels a lot longer than the previous game.

Also been playing Gunstar Super Heroes, nice and surprisingly underlooked. Can't believe they accomplished that kind of sprite overload on the old GBA! I don't think I've seen DS games with that kind of on-screen insanity. Makes it understandable why there's no co-op, and of course it's not up to the level of Astro Boy, but even if it is mostly a remake of the original Gunstar, still damn fun.

Nhex, Thursday, 12 June 2008 02:24 (seventeen years ago)

forksclovetofu, Thursday, 12 June 2008 11:47 (seventeen years ago)

Currently replaying all the Final Fantasy games, starting with the s/t. I'm just at the start of the Marsh Cave. My party is Fighter + Thief + White Mage + Black Mage and I keep getting killed trying to level up so that I can a) buy decent equipment and spells and b) actually beat the Wizards. Even w/an emulator, the frustration/tedium level is pretty high. I can't believe I beat this game a bunch of times on my old NES.

Lamp, Friday, 20 June 2008 04:53 (seventeen years ago)

You might want to restart the game with Fighter + Fighter + Fighter + Black or Red Mage, it'll be a lot easier if a bit boring.

abanana, Friday, 20 June 2008 05:54 (seventeen years ago)

Party I've got is pretty good, it's more that I had forgotten how hard some of the dungeons in that game were.

HI DERE, Tuesday, 2 September 2008 16:04 (seventeen years ago)

Too Human - which I think Diablo 2 will look a lot like. The actual gameplay is mostly button-mashing and too easy. 80% of your time is cut-scenes and managing your character's inventory and skills. It is pretty though, and destroying like 40 enemies in 30 seconds is kinda fun.

z z. st. z z. uv (Lamp), Sunday, 9 November 2008 18:57 (seventeen years ago)

Playing: Castlevania: Order of Ecclesia. I just beat the main game. The post-game extras look pretty weak compared to the last few CVs, so I might put it down for a while. Also, the "second quest" (post-fake endboss) in this CV was the best yet.

On hold: Smash Brawl, and Shining Force 2 on Wii VC. I don't feel like playing console games for some reason.

Next up?: Mega Man ZX Advent. MM8 brought me back to the series; now to see what a decently-rated modern game in the series is like.

abanana, Sunday, 9 November 2008 20:57 (seventeen years ago)

How do you think Ecclesia ranks compared to the other two DS games? (last CV I played was Aria)

Nhex, Sunday, 9 November 2008 22:49 (seventeen years ago)

for me it's better than "portrait of ruin" (which I found too fiddly, fiddlier than these metroidvanias usually are) and about as fun as "dawn of sorrow"; ymmv obv but if you loved aria (which I never played but have read it's considered the best of the post-symphony castlevanias) the consensus seems to be you'll love the castlevania DS games

personally (tho I'm a wuss, as attested by my inability to beat tubular) I think this game is pretty hard; it's no megaman 9 but you will die often; it's fun tho and I really like the collect-em-all weapons system (tho the 'glyphs' system doesn't as good as the souls system, for some reason) and the art-style is cool

I'm no connoisseur tho

c˚zwn (cozwn), Sunday, 9 November 2008 23:01 (seventeen years ago)

PoR > OoE > CotM > DoS > AoS > HoD

I rank Aria of Sorrow low because it's the most obvious Symphony of the Night aper.

I liked the added challenge of OoE, although I wish they'd get rid of the elemental weaknesses. It was annoying having to switch between hammers and swords all the time.

Nhex, Friday, 12 December 2008 01:26 (seventeen years ago)

It really was. I'd played the other two, but I've never actually spent a good chunk of time with Castlevania II before tonight. I see myself alternating between this and Fallout 3 for the forseeable future. We'll see which one I beat first.

Z S, Friday, 12 December 2008 02:26 (seventeen years ago)

OK, I was enjoying Castlevania II for a while, but these "puzzles" are fucking ridiculous. I just spent an hour walking around looking for the second castle, talking to everyone for the millionth time. Finally, I resort to GameFAQs for advice"

SCREEN 19:
Okay you will now see a large body of water. So like WTF are we

the screen will then scroll down revealing a hidden cavern.

Z S, Friday, 12 December 2008 23:45 (seventeen years ago)

Yeah, I think the retro pro-nostalgia post-backlash was too much. (I think most people were quite disappointed in Castlevania II at first, then after some time it's been rightfully or wrongfully hailed as a great chapter in its own right, like SMB 2 and Zelda II) There's some really cool things going for it - especially the music - but c'mon, the puzzles will always be unforgivable nonsense. And the villagers lie to you!

Nhex, Saturday, 13 December 2008 00:27 (seventeen years ago)

I actually came to it innocently, without any knowledge that it was the SMB2/Zelda II of Castlevanias. In fact, for some reason I thought that Castlevania II was renowned as one of the best Castlevanias. But fuck that. Still, I will probably think to myself "What a terrible night to have a curse" everytime I walk around in the dark by myself from now on, so props for that.

guys i might buy rock band 2. i don't know if this is a good idea or not. i've had a blast playing (drunk) at various people's places, but it's expensive and it's more clutter. the urge to buy this just came out of nowhere last week and hasn't let up.

circa1916, Saturday, 13 December 2008 15:05 (seventeen years ago)

It's pretty fun, and there's a lot of downloadable content at this point. It's only a superfluous fame if you already have Rock Band 1.

TOMBOT, Saturday, 3 January 2009 06:53 (sixteen years ago)

Okay, I have a Wii from North America and am trying to make it useable in the UK. I bought an adapter from a possibly shoddy ebayer who claimed it would work on imported Wiis, but the voltage on the charge block only says 120V and the power leaad is an ugly black cord rather than grey. It actually looks like they've taken a US adapter (all the shock warnings are written in English, French, and Spanish) and stuck a UK power cord into it. So, question: will this actually work without a step-down converter or will it just explode my Wii? Please help :(

salsa shark, Wednesday, 7 January 2009 20:25 (sixteen years ago)

wait, you can't just buy the local line lump from a UK shop?

El Tomboto, Wednesday, 7 January 2009 20:31 (sixteen years ago)

I haven't ever seen replacement adapters for big consoles in shops. Getting a UK cord for the DS was a breeze, but trying to find one for the Wii has been a challenge. Or I'm just a dumbass.

salsa shark, Wednesday, 7 January 2009 20:59 (sixteen years ago)

Getting v annoyed with Manhunt 2 on Wii not being able to skip past videos. Yes, the club is run by pervs, I know.

Can't really help wrt power adapters other than to say I would not want to plug in a 120V adapter into a UK power supply. I guess it might work, my wife brought a PC monitor over from the US which was perfectly happy having either voltage plugged into it.

I KNOW WHAT YOU'RE UP TO (Colonel Poo), Tuesday, 13 January 2009 12:29 (sixteen years ago)

nah, I sent it back to the guy I got it from and asked for a refund for it not being as described in the listing (and for being grotesquely overcharged on shipping). dude claimed the sticker reading 120V was an error and it should work, blah blah blah, but the thing was obviously an adapter that had been tampered with and I didn't want to risk it. anyway, I ordered one directly from Nintendo (I wish I'd known I could do that before wasting time on the ebay route). cost a bit more and won't be here for a few weeks but at least I can be sure it won't explode my machine.

salsa shark, Tuesday, 13 January 2009 15:13 (sixteen years ago)

so is manhunt 2 on wii worth playing in general?

Well, I feel like a dummy.

I had always assumed, for some reason, that the Wii MotionPlus attachment would be backwards compatible with existing games. Old news for everyone here, I'm sure, but it isn't. I thought this thing was going to completely eliminate all of the frustration of the weak motion detection in existing games, FUCK.

Going to buy Tiger Woods with wii motion+ this week. I've played other golf games, and other editions of Tiger Woods, but this is the first time I remember being really excited about a golf game - it seems like the motion+ tech is going to make it pretty amazing.

zappi, Saturday, 27 June 2009 23:24 (sixteen years ago)

I'm playing DK Jungle Beat WITH BONGOS. This shit is fantastic, you can really tell it's by the people who did (at least I think it is) Mario Galaxy, lovely graphics and all. Wii developers be ashamed. Super fun, constantly throwing up delights and surprises and really excellent little touches. Quite compelling to get decent scores and string things together, though was a little disappointed it wasnt more rhythm based, or more like NiGHTS in terms of stringing stuff together instead of chucking unnecessary moves in to collect stuff.

Other than that, Peggle.

Suedey 2, Sunday, 28 June 2009 22:21 (sixteen years ago)

Jungle Beat was really damn good, I don't get at all why they bothered to bring it back to Wii without Bongos. I can't imagine it being nearly as fun without them.

there are a lot of hidden modes in the game as well, holding down the 1 or 2 button before starting a sport unlocks them (eg 2 in archery removes the shrinking circle, 2 in table tennis makes it an 11 point game etc etc)

Trackmania Wii looking surprisingly good http://www.revogamers.net/noticias-4047-%5BCGC09%5D-TrackMania-Wii-en-v%C3%ADdeo.html
supposedly has non friendcode sharing, 8+ online, 200 premade tracks + editor, all the Mario Kart control configs, 60fps etc etc. hmmm we'll see.
if they marketed this properly though it could easily crossover to the mainstream.

Jeff LeVine, Tuesday, 25 August 2009 23:39 (sixteen years ago)

nah, they're still nailing down the online so haven't announced the details yet eg they've got 8 people online at the moment, but they are trying to increase to 16. really doubt online custom tracks though, i would guess they'd be more likely to go for a weekly 'download' track ala Mario Kart Challenge.

Just curious what gamecube games didn't make it over there that you're interested in (it can't be much, right?)...

Which got me thinking as the only gamecube release I've been wanting to try out that never made it here was Doshin the Giant... so I "found" a copy this morning and it looks like it's now working in the Dolphin emulator (only tried to get it running but will fool around with it when I have more time later). Are there other gamecube games we've missed?

Jeff LeVine, Thursday, 27 August 2009 15:02 (sixteen years ago)

it's not a case of playing games I missed out on it's just gamecube games still largely hold their value thanks to wii bc but on ebay ntsc/jp games are almost half the price so I thought it'd be easier to go tht route

cozwn, Thursday, 27 August 2009 15:29 (sixteen years ago)

Damn - I was hoping you were going to roll off a list of awesome games I knew nothing about. Yeah, over here, other than first party and one or two weird titles, you can get gamecube games really cheap (last time I checked). I bought pretty much all the gamecube games that vaguely interested me around the end of last year and still haven't played any of them :(

The only gamecube games (that I know of) that I still want to pick up, but haven't, as they're a bit too expensive, are Skies of Arcadia and Super Mario Sunshine (both going for around $60 US for new copies!)

Jeff LeVine, Thursday, 27 August 2009 16:20 (sixteen years ago)

cozwn, Thursday, 27 August 2009 21:38 (sixteen years ago)

ah, ha, quick google reveals tht the developers of radilgy (milestone inc.) also made illmatic envelope (illvelo)

cozwn, Thursday, 27 August 2009 21:40 (sixteen years ago)

In the US (and and Japan and Korea, I guess) there's a comp (for wii) of three older milestone games with the somewhat crazy name of "Ultimate Shooting Collection" that came out earlier this year...
http://www.amazon.com/Ultimate-Shooting-Collection-Nintendo-Wii/dp/B001BJ690E/

Radilgy / Radio Allergy is my favorite of the three titles. I haven't played a ton, but have been meaning to get back into them. Actually, I have a Hori Wii Arcade stick supposedly in the mail mostly for that purpose (was hoping it would come today). Chaos Field also had a single disc gamecube release, but that's the title on there I like the least (so far).

Nhex, Friday, 28 August 2009 15:47 (sixteen years ago)

With all this talk about the Milestone games, one should keep in mind that the best (newish) STG / shmup on Wii is still Castle of Shikigami 3 (by a long shot). Also Blastworks could / should be skipped.

Jeff LeVine, Friday, 28 August 2009 16:14 (sixteen years ago)

Decided to pick up the Metroid Prime Trilogy today at toysrus (they're having a buy 1 Wii game get 1 half off, so I picked up Wii Sports Resorttoo, for family fun) and the packaging is awesome. Out of curiosity, are there any good online multiplayer games for the Wii? I'm particularly interested in co-op.

Nhex, Friday, 4 September 2009 05:32 (sixteen years ago)

This is a good (tough) question. I couldn't think of any Wii games with online co-op, so i did a search and the (only?) game that seems to come up is Battalion Wars 2 - I don't know anything about it though. Watched a couple of videos & it really didn't look like much.

For versus online there's always Mario Kart, and I quite enjoy Grand Slam Tennis. Not having voice chat perhaps makes playing these games online against friends feel no different than playing against total strangers though. Is there an online version of Bomberman?

I'm bummed New Super Mario Bros Wii doesn't have online, because that looks like it would be a perfect fit.

Jeff LeVine, Friday, 4 September 2009 20:47 (sixteen years ago)

i think Endless Ocean 2 is supposed to have online co-op with voice support? Wii is the wrong console if you want online gaming though.

capn save a noob (cozwn), Tuesday, 8 September 2009 18:05 (sixteen years ago)

I do want Muramasa but I hear (1) whooooooooooooooooooole lot of backtracking and (2) the controls are kind of hinky since you can't remap jump to a button instead of "up"

"I have seen bloodstains on the Pac Man joystick" (jamescobo), Tuesday, 8 September 2009 19:04 (sixteen years ago)

I bought Muramasa over the three day weekend game buying orgy and played about an hour of it... so a few first impressions... Graphics are indeed amazing. What backtracking I've had to do, well, it obviously feels unnecessary, but then again you can backtrack through an entire early level in around 30-45 seconds (I don't know if it gets worse later on, but it really didn't bug me). Didn't have much of a problem with the controls, though I was playing with the wii remote and have decided to switch to classic controller next time I pick up the game, as I think trying to use the joystick on the nunchuck didn't feel that great. I was playing on the harder difficulty and the combat reminded me of the new Ninja Gaiden games, but brought back to 2d - so, at times very button mashy and I didn't feel quite as in control as I would like - difficult to time switching between blocking and doing different attacks effectively because the screen is so busy with multiple enemies coming at you from multiple directions that it gets confusing. That said, at least to start it wasn't very challenging (did die once on the first boss and I guess one other time where I didn't select and use a healing thing in time - making me wish I could set it to auto). Overall, I ended up feeling kind of so-so about it to start, didn't feel super compelled to rush back into it over some other games that have grabbed my attention more the last couple of days, though still planning to get back to it. One of the best looking Wii games for sure, would almost believe it's in HD.

Jeff LeVine, Wednesday, 16 September 2009 18:14 (sixteen years ago)

down as October in Europe.
i don't really understand how it works, do you have any control when you fight, or are you programming a windup toy & then setting it loose?

Freeware version is here (for PC, Mac, Mac PowerPC or Linux)...

zappi, Wednesday, 16 September 2009 19:02 (sixteen years ago)

o_O

"Eager to show its disconnected patrons that their Wiis can do more than Wii Sports -- you don't even have to eject the disc! -- Nintendo has appointed pretty much anyone in Europe savvy enough to visit Wii's Connection Settings menu an "Ambassador." Here's how the "Connection Ambassador Promotion" works: Beginning in October (as seen in Japan), if you help another Wii owner establish an online connection, you and your incompetent friend will both receive five Nintendo bucks (500 Wii Points). (Presumably, when connecting for the first time, there will be an option to credit an Ambassador.)

And if you extend your services to the maximum of twenty previously offline console owners? You're looking at a 10,000-point payout ($100 worth of old games you probably have tucked away in cart form, plus all those WiiWare options) -- not bad, eh?

But wait! There's a more tempting perk to this promotion. As Ambassador, once you connect ten users, you'll achieve "gold status" and be free to download all first-party NES titles on Virtual Console. Oh, but it gets far better: Hit your twenty connections and -- you guessed it -- you've attained "platinum status," essentially granting you the keys to Nintendo's Virtual Console catalog. That's right, all first- and third-party NES, SNES and N64 games -- for free."

The update to the nintendo channel is well worth downloading (you have to go to the shop channel area to get it) if you like stats, as there's a new record area that shows you how many hours and times you've played each game on your console. Not surprisingly I've played Mario Kart Wii the most (22+ hours), but I was surprised to discover my second most played game was Geometry Wars Galaxies. Video streaming on the channel also seems somewhat improved.

how so? even with the PS3 price cut, it's still significant historically (though i know the PS3 had won out some months in Japan earlier in the year)

Nhex, Friday, 30 October 2009 12:03 (sixteen years ago)

PS3 basically just launched (or re-launched if ur picky) imo: the price cut means it's now reasonably priced and the hardware revision means it's now actually not fugly = a flood of of first-time buyers, and it still didn't beat the wii by that much. the wii meanwhile got a minor price cut in the US and a 'technical' price-cut in the UK (u now get more for ur buck but it's still the same price) and no hardware re-design and it still sold pretty well

ive been playing digimon world and dragon warrior vii both of which, considering they came out at the end of the ps1's lifecycle, are two of the ugliest games ive ever played. digimon world in particular has p hilarious sizing issues btw backgrounds and sprites so u look like a hobbit on scrn and a giant on the next. its also the sloppiest localization ive ever seen full of glitches, shitty translations, missing menus.

the game has no characters only the vaguest semblance of a story (u play a nameless japanese boy who is the only human on earth champion enuff @ social isolation and the obsessive care of pocket calculator-like video games 2 save the world THIS IS INSIDE YOUR DIGIVICE!) and is eventually given up on and never really resolved and can beaten w/in a couple of hours. and yet ppl on the internet of spent hundreds of hours on this game because beating the game doesn't even net u single medal (there are like 30) instead u mostly shepherd into existence these retarded-looking monsters a task for which the game gives you p much no information, guidance or incentive. except the promise of actually maybe "completing" it.

its such a terrible game but the thrill of raising one of these stupid things is like a science experiment or evil scheme and p compelling

dwvii is also p terrible btw but only for being long and ugly otherwise it plays p well

zappi, Saturday, 14 August 2010 16:06 (fifteen years ago)

so I'm thinking about getting a Wii this week. Two questions:

1) is this a silly time to get one? Some of you have your ears close to the Nintendo rumor mill: is there a "nu-Wii" coming soon? If so, is it just going to be Wii HD?

2) have we ever put together a list of "essential" Wii games the way we did with the DS? I basically want Wii Sports + SMB + Super Mario Galaxy 1/2. What else do you think is a must?

Euler, Sunday, 15 August 2010 00:32 (fifteen years ago)

I don't think I would expect a new wii anytime soon. This cow still has more milk to give.

Jeff, Sunday, 15 August 2010 00:47 (fifteen years ago)

1. no. but try to buy a pack that includes Wii Sports Resort.
2. Resident Evil 4 on Wii is essential.

Mosquepanik at Ground Zero (abanana), Sunday, 15 August 2010 03:56 (fifteen years ago)

Next Wii coming, but not for at least a year, probably early 2012.
Wii has plenty of those "quirky" games that PS2 had, so everyone's going to have a different idea of what the good games are, just depends what you're tastes are really. don't ignore the Wiiware & Virtual Console either, although Nintendo completely fucked up by tieing your purchases to the console and not a user account ie. no way to redownload the games if your console breaks or to the WiiHD when it comes. so dumb.
anyway this is a pretty good thread about whats available http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showthread.php?t=396775

zappi, Sunday, 15 August 2010 12:09 (fifteen years ago)

I feel less and less sure a next Wii is coming anytime soon. It seemed to make sense for them to do it ASAP, to fight piracy and the HD advantage, but it doesn't make sense for them to do it considering how well the Wii console and Nintendo first part Wii software sells. In any case, it's definitely at least over a year away. As time passes I also feel less sure that Nintendo is going to release a simple Wii2/WiiHD upgrade (especially now that both MS and Sony are releasing their own motion control schemes). It seems much more likely to me now, that when Nintendo releases their next console they will again try to do something new and fresh to make it stand out - something more that just Mario games in HD.

a handful of Wii games not mentioned I've played a lot of are the Tiger Woods games (sublime with motion plus), Mario Kart Wii, a Boy and his Blob, Grand Slam Tennis, Geometry Wars Galaxies, Tatsunoko vs Capcom, Castle of Shikigami III, virtual console classics and Cubello.

so..... what's up with the wii? does it still exist? they're still making games for it? anything great? i know two people who bought one when it came out years ago but i don't live near either of them anymore so i'm very out of the loop wii-wise. the last things i got to play (in v. limited quantities) were mario galaxy, which looked great, and the paper mario game, which looked pretty lazily designed but possibly still fun. is it a better system/better library of games than the gamecube (which was awful imo, very few decent games)? how is this thing doing in japan? is it still in every living room being played by everyone from ages 8-80 like they said it would be? v. curious to what the consensus is on this system now. is it worth getting one as an only game system? are there any games that make exceptionally good or unique use of the controller thing? sorry for the bombardment of questions but i feel like i haven't heard anyone talk about this thing pretty much since it came out, and it seemed to have a lot of promise at the time.

sleepingbag, Wednesday, 15 September 2010 22:11 (fifteen years ago)

i guess what i'm looking for is not really an answer to every one of those q's per se, but maybe just an evaluation of the system at this point in its existence

sleepingbag, Wednesday, 15 September 2010 22:13 (fifteen years ago)

seems like nintendo is basically grinding out nostalgia fodder and driving in neutral as far as the american audience is concerned. i think the gamecube library is stronger.

there's actually a fuckton of Wii games coming out in the next few months which I want v. much:

- NBA Jam
- Kirby's Epic Yarn
- Epic Mickey
- Epic Donkey Kong Country (not really called that but had to keep the theme going)

looking forward to : Kirby, Trackmania, uhhhhhh maybe Epic Mickey. and Cave Story if it ever gets an EU release.
basically though the party is nearly over, 3rd party support has pretty much died out & Nintendo are concentrating on the 3DS.

zappi, Wednesday, 15 September 2010 22:28 (fifteen years ago)

i think my big problem is how quickly the whole waggle control nonsense became a total deal breaker for me. which given our future overlords kinect and move is kinda loltastic tbh.

like, i could give a fuck about it not being HD or whatever, i just dont want to shake a controller around because it isnt actually fun.

Gerard Depardeauxnt (jjjusten), Wednesday, 15 September 2010 22:33 (fifteen years ago)

the best games tho have nothing to do with waggle, & more to do with pointer skillz

zappi, Wednesday, 15 September 2010 22:35 (fifteen years ago)

yeah i agree w/that actually - epic mickey might be promising in that respect. still say that the best wii game to date might be house of the dead:overkill but i realize that i am in a tiny corner of opinion on that one.

Gerard Depardeauxnt (jjjusten), Wednesday, 15 September 2010 22:38 (fifteen years ago)

no, thats one of my favourites as well! the ridiculous fashion for mapping a button press to a waggle was one of the worst gameplay design ideas this gen (i'm looking at you, De Blob jump mechanic grrrr)

zappi, Wednesday, 15 September 2010 22:43 (fifteen years ago)

i like a lot of the wii games but feel like on the whole the console really underdelivered. in some ways it makes sense as the perfect 'casual' console - nintendo puts out a half dozen highly playable, vaguely familiar titles a year & no1 ever gets overwhelmed or disappointed. but both the virtual console & the breadth of titles released have been incredibly shallow & i dont think theyve done much to really ~use~ the technology.

grand slam tennis feels like it got massively underrated tho fwiw

The virtual console stuff isn't ports, it's all just being emulated. All the WiiWare stuff was made for the Wii, though some of them are ports (from PC, like Cave Story or And Yet it Moves or other systems). Definitely some excellent WiiWare exclusives though too, like the bit.trip and art style games.

― Gerard Depardeauxnt (jjjusten), Wednesday, September 15, 2010 3:33 PM (Yesterday) Bookmark

I will disagree with this. I don't think shaking a controller is somehow less "fun" than pressing a button. Is pressing a button especially fun? I guess one could argue pressing a button is a more accurate input method, but a simple waggle can work quite well - for instance when taking in shot on goal in PES, or when playing a Wario Ware game. What you gain with motion control, in particular with Motion+ can be a lot. Like playing WiiSports Resort Ping Pong or Grand Slam Tennis - two games that are vastly improved and more immersive than traditional button press games, by allowing you to control and play more naturally, as if you were swinging a paddle or racquet & both are a ton of fun.

Jeff LeVine, Thursday, 16 September 2010 15:20 (fifteen years ago)

no i see that, i just think that its the constant implementation drive that gets me down, combined with the fact that its kind of a anti-ergonomic controller for anything other than waggle and rail shooter function. if its something that works for motion thats fine, but when it replaces something thats simply better as a button press, it irritates me, and that seems more and more common. i cant come up with a better example than de blob that zappi mentioned upthread, which comes pretty close to ruining an otherwise kinda awesome game because of the control scheme.

i mean yeah button pressing isnt per se fun, but if yer playing an FPS and they decide to make the fire button a face button instead of a trigger, thats just stupid design. i guess my main problem is that implementing the waggle by all means necessary has kind of crippled the system imo.

Gerard Depardeauxnt (jjjusten), Thursday, 16 September 2010 15:50 (fifteen years ago)

added bonus: replacing shitty quick time button press segments with quick time waggle segments (looking at you RE4) somehow makes them EVEN MORE ANNOYING

Gerard Depardeauxnt (jjjusten), Thursday, 16 September 2010 15:52 (fifteen years ago)

i guess my main problem is that implementing the waggle by all means necessary has kind of crippled the system imo.

well, to me that just reads like trademarked jjj hyperbole and isn't reflected in the reality of most of the (non-shovelware) Wii library. So many Wii games don't use any waggle at all, or support multiple control options. I never played da blob so can't really comment on that, but sounds like it's the game's problem not the system. I do agree that quick time events suck with both button presses and waggle. I think RE was the only Wii game I played that had them, and overall, I think that controlled a lot better on Wii than on any other system, so, I don't know. It's a shame the Wii is such dated tech that it couldn't do proper versions of the newer games.

Really, my main problem with the Wii is its ten year old technology that hasn't allowed it to compete graphically with current gen systems. I guess that it was a lot cheaper makes up for that somewhat. But still, games like PES look like dogshit compared to the console versions (and even worse than that compared to PC), so much so that it makes them hard to play. And a lot of the games I played the most this gen, from Street Fighter IV to CoD 4-6 and Battlefield BC, couldn't be done on the Wii (or only in extremely reduced versions). That makes it feel like a missed opportunity. It's hard to get excited about a remake like Goldeneye when it still looks like a ps2 launch game from a decade ago.

Jeff LeVine, Thursday, 16 September 2010 16:46 (fifteen years ago)

De Blob has a short jerky waggle movement to jump and doesn't have a jump button - I think it's a fair criticism of the game but I got used to it pretty quick and it's still great fun.
