One of the games I'm most jealous of PS owners for having. Also the Kraftwerk-enhanced trailer :O

― snoball, Monday, 15 September 2008 17:36 (seventeen years ago)
This will be the thing that tips me toward spending whatever Christmas cash I get on a PS3. I didn't want to do it, but Wipeout is about the only game I've ever played like a madman for years on end.

Yeah, it's a direct download from PSN only, as far as I know.

ohboyohboyohboy
this will more than keep me going from here to Dead Space. i am currently being pretty cocky about the review reports of it being brutally hard, but i bet my controller doesn't make it to October intact.

I've got a headache and playing this game won't do me any good right now. But still, I'll be downloading it as soon as I get home..

it looks gorgeous from the screenshots

oh well, guess I'll be downloading it tonight ^_^

yeah this is quite brilliant. i love being able to play my own music as i'm screaming round the tracks at a million miles an hour.
― nate woolls, Thursday, 25 September 2008 18:27 (seventeen years ago)
I really like it, I must admit I didn't right away as I was a bit rusty with the trigger turning and that first track was pretty tricky. But didn't take long to get addicted to unlocking stuff and loving it.

It's seems like it's a better game than I thought it would be, and I thought it was going to be really good. So far, I'm damn amazed. Maybe the best looking game I've ever seen.

I just realised we're now playing Wipeout with better graphics than from the original Wipeout fmv that everyone creamed over at the beginning of the first game.
― Ste, Friday, 26 September 2008 14:52 (seventeen years ago)
Custom soundtracks! Set that up last night and it really adds a lot. First time I've ever even bothered using the feature.
Also I tried out a couple of online races and no lag that I noticed, very smooth, even though I seemed to be racing people over 6,000 miles away. Obviously a small sample size though, but I was impressed. There did seem to one bug, as it kept repeating driver eliminated throughout one of the races, more times than there were drivers in the race?
Game gets really hard at the higher speeds. I guess you can't just hold down the gas when you're flying around the track like that, but gotta ease up around the corners too. Air brakes don't seem to be enough. Or maybe I just have to memorize the tracks better?
― Jeff LeVine, Friday, 26 September 2008 17:10 (seventeen years ago)

― i am the small cat (HI DERE), Monday, 29 September 2008 13:59 (seventeen years ago)
zone mode is odd, you don't press the accelerate it just goes at a set speed. the longer you go the faster it gets. the voice announces when you move up a level. the later ones are ridiculously impossible!
but the ship on zone mode looks amazing, as do the textureless levels
― Ste, Monday, 29 September 2008 14:10 (seventeen years ago)
it is good, but I'm so close to thrashing my ps3 against a wall sometimes trying to get medals.

i really suck at this - any tips for a newbie?
― baaderonixx, Monday, 29 September 2008 14:15 (seventeen years ago)
it's all about choosing the right ship for the track, good handling for the tracks with sharp corners. Also, u&k learning to use the L and R triggers for turning I think.
I'm shit at the combat part
― Ste, Monday, 29 September 2008 14:33 (seventeen years ago)
is there a diff between using L2/R2 and the joystick to turn?
― baaderonixx, Monday, 29 September 2008 14:42 (seventeen years ago)
yes, l2/r2 is a much sharper turn, it is croosh to master those
― s1ocki, Monday, 29 September 2008 14:44 (seventeen years ago)
so jealous!!!!
― STINKING CORPSE (cozwn), Monday, 29 September 2008 14:46 (seventeen years ago)
and i think pressing l2/r2 together is fast break, but not on zone mode. is that right?
― Ste, Monday, 29 September 2008 14:47 (seventeen years ago)
no - it's double tapping either of those keys
― baaderonixx, Monday, 29 September 2008 14:54 (seventeen years ago)
xxxp - aha - i've only been using l2/r2 since I started playing. Maybe I shd try the stick
― baaderonixx, Monday, 29 September 2008 14:55 (seventeen years ago)
that's what she said
― s1ocki, Monday, 29 September 2008 15:17 (seventeen years ago)
I nearly did this a lot with the predecessors - it was always 50% argh I fucked up and 50% that was so cheap (after fighting my way back from fucking up).
― Andrew Farrell, Monday, 29 September 2008 15:39 (seventeen years ago)
oh man, claiming 1st place in the nick of time is so satisfying - especially if it's by obliterating your opponent with a random missile you fired accidentally because you pressed fire instead of accellerate in the sweaty last seconds of the last lap and you didn't even know you'd picked up missiles anyway.
― Ste, Monday, 29 September 2008 15:44 (seventeen years ago)
hahaha Ste otm
― i am the small cat (HI DERE), Monday, 29 September 2008 15:51 (seventeen years ago)
I'm no expert, but here's my take on the controls for those above who were a little confused. Whenever possible you want to turn just using the d-pad (or stick if that's your preference). When you need to make a sharper turn, use the air-brakes (L2/R2). The reason you don't want to use the air brakes unless you absolutely need to, is because they slow down your ship a lot. Choosing the right ship to fit your style is somewhat important, but the differences between each ship seems pretty minor. If you're crashing into walls a lot and having trouble on the turns, pick a ship with better handling, if you're feeling too slow, pick a ship with better speed/thrust (I don't understand the difference between speed and thrust in these games though - anybody care to explain). In this version, it seems to me that finding the right racing lines is really important for making a good time - that means memorizing the tracks and knowing what's coming up and basically using the rules of good race cornering (sorry, I don't have time to explain that here). Finding the right places on the track to use boost (if you got it), and also doing the barrel rolls whenever you can (if you have enough shields) as those extra boosts can help a lot too - if you don't know how to do this, you just tap left, right, left or right, left, right on the d-pad whenever you catch some air.
― Jeff LeVine, Monday, 29 September 2008 16:16 (seventeen years ago)
for some dumb reason i use stick to steer but d-pad to roll
― s1ocki, Monday, 29 September 2008 16:33 (seventeen years ago)
uh - disregard what I wrote above about the airbrakes, as I was just reading the in-game manual and it claimed the airbrakes don't slow you down.
― Jeff LeVine, Monday, 29 September 2008 16:44 (seventeen years ago)
Regarding offensive weapons: when playing against the computer, they're pretty much a useless waste of time. It's better to just absorb 'em. The only worthwhile-pick ups are speed boost and autopilot.
― Jeff LeVine, Monday, 29 September 2008 17:20 (seventeen years ago)
speed = top speedthrust = acceleration
(i guess)
― Ste, Monday, 29 September 2008 17:33 (seventeen years ago)
autopilot is worthwhile? i find it pretty useless. it often doesnt even go over the speed-ups!!
― s1ocki, Monday, 29 September 2008 19:32 (seventeen years ago)
I don't know - I've only gotten it once actually in the new game, but I did pass two other racers when I used it. I've always been fond of the way it'll take you right through a difficult section at full speed (at least in the psp game) and give one a chance to sit back and relax.
― Jeff LeVine, Monday, 29 September 2008 19:40 (seventeen years ago)
smoke a d00b
― s1ocki, Monday, 29 September 2008 19:45 (seventeen years ago)
i do find the weapons useful, especially the wall of fire one. cuz it really slows down the other racers.
plus the bomb/mine type ones are great if someone's really riding your ass!
If zone mode is the same as in Fusion and Pure, then you have to play it completely the opposite of the normal game: steer and correct using the airbrakes, and only use the stick if you have to - which, admittedly, will be most of the time at the faster speeds, but the turns and corrections you can make with the airbrakes are much more controlled and reliable. In Fusion you got a gold at zone 20, I managed to get up to 55 on the first course (I believe some people actually got into triple figures).
― shoving leopard (ledge), Monday, 29 September 2008 22:44 (seventeen years ago)
mines are pretty useful, and i just love the wall of fire weapon even if i have to use it on no enemies.
― Ste, Monday, 29 September 2008 23:11 (seventeen years ago)
haha i've just dwnloaded all the OST music of every wipeout game, i remember i used to sit and listen to my saturn playing wipeout 1 music instead of playing it.
― Ste, Monday, 29 September 2008 23:13 (seventeen years ago)
i think i played wipeout 2097 for about six months before even realizing the airbrakes existed - i was like "ohhh the game's not broken after all"
― Tracer Hand, Monday, 29 September 2008 23:47 (seventeen years ago)
a few more tips I dug up online that may be useful...
1. To get a boost at the beginning of the race... Do not hit or press the acceleration button at all (not even once), until the start countdown is at "0" (when the announcer says "GO!")2. when you have a boost available to you're ship, time its use with the boost pads (especially double boost pads) for extra acceleration3. When you use Pilot Assist, it caps your speed at 90%. So don't use it.

― Jeff LeVine, Tuesday, 30 September 2008 05:37 (seventeen years ago)
Yeah, this is the one. So a ship with best speed and worst thrust can beat any other racer, provided you never hit anything...
Do they pick the ship for you in zone, or do you get a choice?
Do they still have a "kill this many opponents" challenge? Wall-of-fire (or Quake as it was known) is very very good at that.
― Andrew Farrell, Tuesday, 30 September 2008 07:03 (seventeen years ago)
You can pick your 'team' in the zone mode, but it's always the same ship.
― Ste, Tuesday, 30 September 2008 08:34 (seventeen years ago)
I tried the online mode for the 1st time last night and found it a bit user unfriendly. It seems you don't have the option to directly invite a friend to a race. You have to create a game, which yr firneds will then have to look for.Anyway, there's something I can't figure out: how do you get additional racers (cpu or humans)? I was playing with one friend last night and would set up the race for 7 opponents (with 1 friend), but then there would only be the two of us when we did get to the race.

one more game
― s1ocki, Wednesday, 1 October 2008 16:43 (seventeen years ago)
baad - you just have to wait for people to join before you start the race. You create a room and it should show up on the list of rooms for people to browse through. The problem probably is, because people weren't starting races very quickly, when one browses through the rooms, you're more likely to pick a room that is almost full, than a room that just has one or two people in there, because nobody wants to wait around forever for people to join or for the person who created the room to start the race. It's too bad they didn't also include some kind of quick race option, so you could just jump into a race right away if you wanted , without have to browse rooms. It's also too bad to read there is no easy invite friends option (haven't tried it myself), though typical for ps3, I guess (slightly broken, not very thought out, online).
― Jeff LeVine, Wednesday, 1 October 2008 17:15 (seventeen years ago)

particularly the snow level with the sharp corners. Tried it on Elite level, and by the last lap I couldn't even see the computer riders anywhere in sight!
at least i played this last night instead of fantastic contraptions.

I failed miserably in my first attempt at this game.
― polyphonic, Friday, 3 October 2008 19:31 (seventeen years ago)
that's the nature of the beast. on my first go i wanted to see it at full speed so i picked the fastest car on the highest speed setting. it wasn't pretty.

There's a nice little "making of" video available for download from the PS network.

Does anyone play this with the motion control? its impossible
― Ant Attack |=| (Ste), Monday, 13 October 2008 12:52 (seventeen years ago)
this game is amazingly fun but way too fuckin hard. still stuck on world 4. the time trials are such fuckin bitches.
― s1ocki, Monday, 20 October 2008 15:39 (seventeen years ago)
yep, and why i've given up with it. The hardness factor seemed to overtake the fun factor on the later levels.
― Ant Attack |=| (Ste), Monday, 20 October 2008 15:41 (seventeen years ago)
I hope I still have the desire to play this once those PSN cards are available in stores.
― GM, Monday, 20 October 2008 15:50 (seventeen years ago)
I at least downloaded the wipeout wallpaper though, which is pretty funky.
― Ant Attack |=| (Ste), Monday, 20 October 2008 15:52 (seventeen years ago)
i don't want to be all johnny big testicles here, but so far i have made it through the first 5 levels. i have gold on all of 1-3 and all but 2 on level 4 and 3 on level 5. time trials are definitely the toughest. i haven't found it off-puttingly hard so far but i feel like that might be around the corner.
― Alien Mindbender (Roberto Spiralli), Monday, 20 October 2008 16:24 (seventeen years ago)
I find the races to be harder than anything else, but this is largely because I am a ham-fisted lummox.
― Pipe Wrench Fight (HI DERE), Monday, 20 October 2008 16:25 (seventeen years ago)
For the time trial stuff, I find switching to the fastest ship helps a lot. You obviously don't need to worry about shields on that stuff. I can't remember if I'm on level 4 or 5. I need to play it more.
― Jeff LeVine, Monday, 20 October 2008 16:41 (seventeen years ago)
guys the original versions of wipeout were really fuckin hard too
― Tracer Hand, Monday, 20 October 2008 17:05 (seventeen years ago)
the psn cards are available at blockbuster.
― Creeztophair, Tuesday, 21 October 2008 02:47 (seventeen years ago)
one thing i found weird, is that i was charged tax on the download. so 1 $20 card wasn't enough to purchase the game. had to charge an extra $5 on credit card.
― Creeztophair, Tuesday, 21 October 2008 02:48 (seventeen years ago)
I hate Sebenco Climb so much. The other tracks i can deal with but it seemed like pure luck when i made it round in first on that one.
― Mr Raif, Tuesday, 21 October 2008 16:52 (seventeen years ago)
okay this game is harder than balls yet I still totally love it, largely because the music is awesome and it is GORGEOUS
also this is the first game I've been able to play online yay
― Black Seinfeld (HI DERE), Friday, 24 October 2008 16:27 (seventeen years ago)
online is smooth as Dave Chapelle's balls for this game. only serves to highlight how fucked up online play has been for many other PS3 games.
― Alan Mindbender (Roberto Spiralli), Friday, 24 October 2008 16:30 (seventeen years ago)
One point away from unlocking level 6! Time trials are kicking my ass though - can't seem to get better than bronze :(
Not a lot of people playing this online anymore already it seems, which is a shame.
I don't understand how some people have run over 75 laps in zone mode. The best I've done so far is 29, and it's probably my favorite mode
― Jeff LeVine, Friday, 7 November 2008 17:43 (seventeen years ago)
Zone mode completely does my head in. I can't fathom how to get through it better than what I'm doing now (around 20).
― Black Seinfeld (HI DERE), Friday, 7 November 2008 17:52 (seventeen years ago)
yeah for some reason I got tired of this real quick
― baaderonixx, Monday, 10 November 2008 13:28 (seventeen years ago)
re zone mode, are you steering/correcting with air brakes?
― ledge, Monday, 10 November 2008 13:31 (seventeen years ago)
I got to the final level in campaign mode but the AI ruthlessly annihilate you, bombs over boost pads, mines at an angle around corners, it's insane. I've found Icarus to be the best ship for speed laps and sometimes the time trials, it depends on the track.
Moa Therma and Anulpha Pass are good practice for Zone mode, i got up to Zone 35.
― Mr Raif, Monday, 10 November 2008 14:11 (seventeen years ago)
New 1.2 patch is supposedly up now, making the game easier with new lower difficulty settings for time trial, speed laps and zone available. Auto-start has also been added to online races one minute after the game is at least half-full, thank god.
― Jeff LeVine, Monday, 24 November 2008 19:59 (seventeen years ago)
They may have made getting golds actually too easy. I just did most of the golds in level 6 (on novice) in pretty much one try. It was probably easier than the equivalent in Mario Kart O_O
― Jeff LeVine, Tuesday, 25 November 2008 07:05 (seventeen years ago)
REVERSE ZONE MODE TRACKS! I didn't know the effects look different (maybe even crazier). I just got to zone 40 on Anulpha Pass reverse! 622 in the world. The good thing about zone - there's pretty much no luck involved. I definitely feel like I can keep getting better. Looking to break 50 but I gotta take a break - too tense.
― Jeff LeVine, Monday, 12 January 2009 02:17 (seventeen years ago)
^ It really takes practice. I've spent hours getting through portions of the level, slowly improving my skills. Zone mode and learning tracks by doing speed laps for golds is an excellent way of memorizing the tracks and doing better against both online opponenets and AI ones. I remember kicking ass online after doing speed laps in the Ubermall, just thinking how great it had been that I was basically practicing all day. Zone mode is great practice as well, though the looks of the tracks make it harder to memorize the look of the races.
Of course, the fact that the game is so damn hard makes it that much harder to jump into it as I did when I didn't play for two weeks. I sucked balls for at least an hour after that.
I still haven't given in to getting medals on Novice (I'm trying to do it on Skilled) but I may ave to give in soon. Those Time Trials are bitches.
― throwbookatface (skygreenleopard), Tuesday, 13 January 2009 23:17 (seventeen years ago)
Although, if you're getting to zone 50 you're better than me. Your work ethic on this game is admirable, though.

31 for me, and that was a fluke.

48 zones on Anulpha Pass reverse tonight. 114th in the world (well, out of the 22,525 who have played the track - shame more people didn't get into this).
― Jeff LeVine, Monday, 26 January 2009 04:23 (seventeen years ago)
That's the only zone level that should be played - it's the benchmark. Do you guys have trouble finding online matches? I agree - fewer people are playing these days, unless it's my slow connection...
― throwbookatface (skygreenleopard), Friday, 30 January 2009 17:54 (seventeen years ago)
I hadn't played this online for a while and was happily surprised when I turned it on today, as it appears they've actually finally fixed the online mode & there's races to be had. Most importantly, you can now browse all races ongoing and queue up to join any race. This leads to finally being able to race in full races! You can also spectate and invite friends / host private races. There's a new badge mode and ranking system too.

Had this for months, finally got back into it after the massive ego-destrying asskicking it gave me the first time, and loving it after finally getting the hang of the airbrakes- I had been giving them little taps, thinking they were more of a subtle adjustment thing with the bulk of the turn taken care of with the stick, which turned out to be totally wrong.
A couple of questions: who do I have to blow to unlock any new content with "loyalty"? I'm about halfway into the third course, with golds on every event in the first and all but two in the second, I've been using Mirage exclusively since it became available (GREAT beginner car, very forgiving) and haven't seen a thing.
Two, can the PS3 play m4a's or am I stuck reripping stuff to mp3 if I want to import it?
― Telephone thing, Thursday, 23 July 2009 18:28 (sixteen years ago)
I had been giving them little taps, thinking they were more of a subtle adjustment thing with the bulk of the turn taken care of with the stick, which turned out to be totally wrong.
This realization CHANGED MY LIFE.
That I don't know; all I did was connect to my media server and import the stuff that I wanted to hear through it so I'm not 100% sure what format it's currently in.
― Lisa Simpson = a fictional bitch (HI DERE), Thursday, 23 July 2009 18:30 (sixteen years ago)
It really feels like a full game now! I especially love that they finally added in stats (path is options/extras/stats, I think). I was suprised to learn I'd only played the game for 29 hours so far. What I tried of the new zone modes is great. I love that the remixed tracks start with that same pure light blue of the psp game before getting all crazy.
― Jeff LeVine, Friday, 24 July 2009 03:34 (sixteen years ago)
I'm up to 2750 loyalty with Mirage, with gold medals in every cell in the first two grids, and still nothing! What do you want from me, Wipeout?! Do you want my BLOOD?!
What makes this even worse is that after giving it a spin, I think I prefer Assegai. But I will be GOD-DAMNED if I'm switching now, even for a better-looking car with better controls.
― Telephone thing, Friday, 24 July 2009 03:37 (sixteen years ago)
It does take close to forever to build up loyaly, and all you unlock is extra skins, so I'm not sure it's really worth the bother
― Jeff LeVine, Friday, 24 July 2009 04:43 (sixteen years ago)
Easiest way to build up loyalty is too spam Anulpha Pass in Zone mode

how does zone battle or whatever work tho?
― julien schNAGL (s1ocki), Friday, 24 July 2009 13:27 (sixteen years ago)
Your ship starts off slow but gets progressivley faster as you pass through different zones during your laps. You continue doing laps as it gets faster and faster until your ship explodes or you experience sensory overload because of the beautiful HD colours.
― same dog, different leg action (Mr Raif), Friday, 24 July 2009 18:09 (sixteen years ago)

― julien schNAGL (s1ocki), Saturday, 25 July 2009 01:29 (sixteen years ago)
Finally unlocked a skin with Mirage (answer: 4000 points). Probably sticking with Assegai from now on, unless the next unlock turns out to be better, or failing that, significantly cooler looking. How are people who've upgraded enjoying Fury so far?
― Telephone thing, Sunday, 26 July 2009 05:22 (sixteen years ago)
I'm not yet totally sold on Zone Battle or Detonator, but overall Fury is a great deal, basically doubling the content of the game and adding variety (with the three new to HD modes). I think Eliminator is going to prove the most popular online mode, probably? The new zone tracks are great, maybe a little easier than the original tracks. Everything about the game is truly beautiful / I even like the new menu refresh.
I hope Wipeout continues to go this way. No new full game development, but just continue releasing 8-12 new tracks with a new mode or two every 10-12 months for the rest of this generation and I'll be very content.
― Jeff LeVine, Sunday, 26 July 2009 17:46 (sixteen years ago)
Eliminator is fucking MAGIC.
― Lisa Simpson = a fictional bitch (HI DERE), Sunday, 26 July 2009 19:44 (sixteen years ago)
I've read in reviews that it has a new single-player campaign- does that replace the original, or is it available alongside it (select original flavory vs Fury when you hit campaign, or whatever)?
― Telephone thing, Sunday, 26 July 2009 22:45 (sixteen years ago)
it continues the story.
― julien schNAGL (s1ocki), Sunday, 26 July 2009 23:36 (sixteen years ago)
Telephone - exactly, when you hit campaign it gives you the choice to play fury or the original
― Jeff LeVine, Monday, 27 July 2009 00:07 (sixteen years ago)
OK, that's what I wanted to hear- I'm about halfway through the original campaign and I wanted to make sure adding Fury wouldn't wipe out my progress or anything.
― Telephone thing, Monday, 27 July 2009 03:48 (sixteen years ago)
So yeah, Fury is awesome. Still a bit iffy on Zone Battle, but the other modes are fantastic, the new tracks are great (with one exception- I forget the name, but there's one track where most of the ground is the same color as boost pads, argh), and the presence of brand-new models and skins for every single ship is a nice bonus.
And Detonator is the best way to rack up loyalty points so far- even my first mediocre attempt netted me over 900.

It just gives way, way more loyalty for a minimal time investment than running speed laps or doing zones.
On a side note, what's up with all the new Fury models for ships having higher stats than their regular HD counterparts?

Glad it's pulled - sure hope it doesn't come back. The loading wasn't so much the problem, just having to see the same fucking State Farm ad over an over again definitely was aggravating. It was ruining the pure aesthetic pleasure that is Wipeout HD. It makes sense they want to monetize that stuff, but you can't do it in a way that disrupts the game experience & makes the game uglier & and annoys the viewer. Hell, I'd rather pay a reasonable subscription fee.

Sure - Ideally there'd by no ads in stuff we pay for, but real life just don't work like that. I pay for TV and I get ads. I pay to see a movie and they show ads before the film. I bought Left4Dead and they have ads during loading. I bought Burnout Paradise and there are ads on the billboards (same with some previous Wipeout games). Etc. ― Jeff LeVine, Sunday, 8 November 2009 22:07 (sixteen years ago)
I was happy with one 1st place finish! First time I'd ever played online, was fun.
― nate woolls, Monday, 9 November 2009 14:23 (sixteen years ago)
Yeah, thanks for stopping in. Wipeout is really one of the best (most fun) online racers. Most people playing are pretty good, but not the bunch of whiny freaks you find in just about every other racing game (except Mario Kart), maybe because nobody uses voice chat (or do I just have it turned off on my system(?), I can't remember). Even with all its weird power-ups, it's very balanced. Even at low speed, it's very fast. Works great with the create your own playlist feature too.
I'll try to run another game in two weeks, but earlier in the day so more people can maybe get in. Will probably set it to flash class for some variety.
― Jeff LeVine, Monday, 9 November 2009 15:36 (sixteen years ago)

― Your heartbeat soun like sasquatch feet (polyphonic), Monday, 9 November 2009 19:32 (sixteen years ago)
My current weapon pick-up theory...
Speed boost - use on straght-aways, right before hitting other speed pads if possible (most useful pickup in the game)Bombs - Drop over speed padsMines - Drop over speed pads, or around a corner where they can't be easily avoidedQuake - most powerful pickup in the game, use whenever you aren't in firstAutopilot - usually I'll just absorb it, but some tracks, maybe there's a tricky part you hate, and autopilot can get you through them pretty fast
Everything else - absorb to replenish energy, or if you're fine on energy, feel free to shoot 'em off, but most of the time they're fairly useless
― Jeff LeVine, Monday, 9 November 2009 20:21 (sixteen years ago)
pretty much OTM, I usually fire most of them off immediately in case I get one of the useful powerups, particularly if I'm tailing someone

Yeah, I'm always a little more worried about myself - I just mostly try to drive well & not worry too much about other people and keep my health up, so I tend to ignore most of the offensive weapons. I do think it's a good idea to get rid of stuff quick though, in hope of an extra speed boost.
― Jeff LeVine, Monday, 9 November 2009 20:39 (sixteen years ago)
i.e. knowing the tracks, racing as close to perfect laps as possible, hitting as many speed pads as possible and doing barrel rolls at the right times are all much more important than any pick-ups if you want to place high or win races consistently.
― Jeff LeVine, Monday, 9 November 2009 20:44 (sixteen years ago)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ejOm1V0Qpvk
my god I love this track way more than I probably should; the moment where everything breaks down and it flips over from 4/4 to 6/8 is fucking BRUTAL and AWESOME and really the only thing that makes it better is the brief stomping 2/4 bit right before everything pulls back into tightly wound control

so fucking choice, the bass thuds in this mixed in with the various chirpy synth riffs and the stutterstep syncopation all dosed with a healthy level of distortion

Years late to the party - I finally got this! I got through a couple of events a bit too easily on Novice so went back and started again on Skilled and now I'm struggling. Can't see me ever doing it in Elite. I used to be really good at Wipeout on PSX - guess my hands and brain have slowed down a lot in the decade or however long it's been :(
When I go into online mode I can only find about 6 races to join and half of them require an expansion pack - is there no-one playing it any more or am I missing something (not that I'm overly fussed about online while I'm still piss at the single player)?
Also how to add custom soundtracks? I can't see the option anywhere.
― meta the devil you know (onimo), Wednesday, 29 September 2010 13:32 (fifteen years ago)
To play a custom soundtrack you go to options, audio, then the third choice down, music playlist will let you select whatever albums or playlists you have set up on your hard drive. In game, you just hit pause and go to audio options, then music playlist.
Online mode has always (since day one!) been somewhat inactive. Which is a pity as the system in this game is really suited for online racing and works great & seems grief proof. You can still find races on the weekend, I think, but like you noticed, not too many lobbies even at peak hours (6 is actually above average!). Some amazing racers online though (of the people still playing), so it can get a little humiliating if you're just playing the game casually (and not obsessively mastering every nuance with your godlike reaction times). When I play online I usually look for races going on in the two slower divisions (or create my own), the two faster speeds are just too crazy impossible for me.
Speaking of Novice, when the game originally launched, it didn't have a novice mode - everything was at elite difficulty & that difficulty did turn a lot of people off right away, I think - which is one of the many reasons online has always been dead too.
The expansion Fury is definitely worth picking up as it doubles the original games content and adds in several new modes - totally worth it (everybody on here would agree, I think).
― Jeff LeVine, Wednesday, 29 September 2010 14:49 (fifteen years ago)
Thanks Jeff - I'll play my way through this then buy the expansion.
I've been streaming music from my PC/Laptop and hadn't put any music physically on my PS3 hard drive - which might explain why the option wasn't available :)
I came 5th in my first online race.
Loving Zone mode - it's a pity admiring the shiny details = crashing!

Am I missing it or is there no way to set the total lap number in Racebox? I want 20 laps so I can hear these 10 minute instrumentals right through. I'm having a night off this as I was running through the tracks in my head last night instead of getting to sleep. All Gold in the first two events on Skilled level - not going to attempt Elite until I unlock everything.
My only big complaint is that it's such an unfair game the way it can fuck you on the last corner but I even forgive that as it works both ways and I occasionally steal an otherwise bad race with a good last lap and some lucky weapon usage.
I've still got the original Wipeout. I should dig it out to find out if it was easier or if my old man gaming reactions are letting me down on HD.
― meta the devil you know (onimo), Thursday, 30 September 2010 19:03 (fifteen years ago)
This skilled/elite thing isn't anywhere near as much of a factor as the speed class of the ships. Can get Gold on Elite at all the Venom class races but when it gets up to Flash/Rapier I'm bouncing off the walls and need the noob bumper bars (pilot assist) on.
Online could be so good if anyone played it :(

Beginning to think on some of these races that "Elite" difficulty = "Lose no matter what" - I finish a race 3rd in 2.28 with the winner on 2.23, then I eventually get down to 2.22 and the winner finishes in 2.19 then a million races later I get to 2.19 and the winner is on 2.14 wtf - oh and last place is 2.22 - faster than the winner in the first race.
I think I'm about doe with this, it looks and plays so well but they're just taking the piss with the AI.

Zone Mode and time trials are so amazing when you get in the groove with the right music. Might see if I can still play this.

Weird that this thread didn't get a revive when the PSVR version came out, it's INCREDIBLE.

literally the worst thing about this pandemic is not being able to go round yours to play it.
