Anybody else going to pick this up? PS3 version is out on the 25th / 360 version out on the 26th. $15.00. Online play is supposed to be really smooth.

Jeff LeVine, Thursday, 20 November 2008 21:20 (seventeen years ago)

If they don't fuck it up, this is a definite purchase. Love me some SF2.

I've never played Super Street Fighter 2 though, so this will be a slightly new creature.

circa1916, Thursday, 20 November 2008 22:18 (seventeen years ago)

is there already a demo? I'd like a solid fighting game, and 2D is fine.

Euler, Thursday, 20 November 2008 22:30 (seventeen years ago)

I will be getting this. On 360 though :/

s1ocki, Friday, 21 November 2008 20:53 (seventeen years ago)

you shd get one of these, will!

czn (cozwn), Friday, 21 November 2008 20:55 (seventeen years ago)

the current xbox d-pad is a TOTAL d-pad, s1ocki.

czn i would totally get one of those if i didn't owe a pooload of money to my phone + my hydro bill + my going to NYC in two weeks!!! as it stands i am poor, like, eating only chickpeas for a month poor.

Everyone is a Jedi (Will M.), Friday, 21 November 2008 20:57 (seventeen years ago)

basically i think all 2D fighting games suffer for not being on sega saturn: best console so i dont mind the shitty xbox controller

co-sign, will, co-sign

czn (cozwn), Friday, 21 November 2008 21:06 (seventeen years ago)

I think fighting games are easier without a joystick.
But street fighter 2 was at its best with Alpha 3. The extra characters were well worth it.

Alpha 3 footage

Street Fighter 4 will include 4 alpha characters: Rose, Gen, Sakura, and Dan. I wish they picked Guy.

and Adon who wasn't in that video

❤ⓛⓞⓥⓔ❤ (CaptainLorax), Friday, 21 November 2008 22:09 (seventeen years ago)

i like Dan angrily eating rice in that pic.

circa1916, Friday, 21 November 2008 22:14 (seventeen years ago)

Canon-wise, aren't all those four Alpha characters supposed to be dead? Almost certainly Rose. (though I'm glad to see them all! Alpha 3 was great) I suspect they're not paying a ton of attention to continuity for this, as SF IV is an interquel between II and III, oddly enough.

SSF2T HD Remix is another one of those "ugh I need to buy a current gen system to play a decade old game" but I guess the HD graphics do justify it. The game is a classic, though I'm always skeptical about smooth online play with fighting games.

Nhex, Saturday, 22 November 2008 01:05 (seventeen years ago)

continuity? street fighter has a story?

s1ocki, Saturday, 22 November 2008 01:57 (seventeen years ago)

Not anymore it doesn't! (see Gouken too)

abanana, Saturday, 22 November 2008 04:38 (seventeen years ago)

there's lots of gameplay additions to this as well, nhex, but from the sounds of it a lot of the content is for the frame-counters

czn (cozwn), Saturday, 22 November 2008 11:04 (seventeen years ago)

oh... and apparently (according to 1up) the netcode is second-to-none. "the best ever, for a fighting game"

czn (cozwn), Saturday, 22 November 2008 11:04 (seventeen years ago)

Oh yeah, duh. I just totally blanked on that. Seriously, it's weird. Actually, I've been following David Sirlin's blog for the last year, and the various move and timing changes sound interesting. Though most of them will be noticeable only to the hardcore like you say (like more given XvY matchups are doable, tiers are supposedly more level, etc.).

If the online play works that will be great, it's something I really want to see officially. I suffered through countless hours of monstrous glitch-ridden Kaillera to get my online fighting fix, once upon a time. Legit games haven't done much better. Believe it when I see it...

Nhex, Saturday, 22 November 2008 12:46 (seventeen years ago)

Slocki, should I get this on PS3 rather than xbox? Can we have an ILG consensus?

antexit, Saturday, 22 November 2008 18:21 (seventeen years ago)

you should because

1) one day earlier
2) we can play each other
3) also you should get super puzzle fighter for ps3

"I wish they picked Guy. and Adon who wasn't in that video" (and a couple other alpha 3 characters most people have never seen weren't in either youtubes I posted. I couldnt find a youtube that wasn't too long and showcased all the "new" alpha characters.)

that's how the two messages were supposed to go together.

and yeah, I don't know if Rose, Gen, Sakura, and Dan are dead but they will only appear in the home version of Street Fighter IV, along with Cammy and Fei Long. Also the home version will have the bosses as playable characters. There's going to be a total of 6 new characters for street fighter IV. this is all from the wiki.

now back to street fighter II TURBO HD Remix... I should ask for a wireless adapter and xbox live for xmas. I used to play fighting games online using MAME but my computer always lagged a bit too much.

❤ⓛⓞⓥⓔ❤ (CaptainLorax), Tuesday, 25 November 2008 02:08 (seventeen years ago)

I'm definitely picking up this game tomorrow (I've even dusted off my stick), but yeah, it's IV that I really want.

Jeff LeVine, Tuesday, 25 November 2008 07:06 (seventeen years ago)

if Sakura's not gonna be dead then she should at least be post-pubertal, but that would probably have provoked outrage from the basement dwelling pederasts she was included for

Glans Christian Christian christian Christian Andersen (MPx4A), Tuesday, 25 November 2008 10:48 (seventeen years ago)

is this going to be as good as SF2?

or just a big pile of pixel shader bollocks?

#/.'#/'@ilikecats (g-kit), Tuesday, 25 November 2008 15:56 (seventeen years ago)

anyone read this?

also a good place to look to read about the changes in this version

czn (cozwn), Tuesday, 25 November 2008 19:01 (seventeen years ago)

My first quick impressions are that I suck. But this version of SFII seems really good. Looks very clean, plays right and online really did seem to work great. I played four or five random rounds online and noticed no lag at all. I did have a problem where it seemed to keep dumping me into another match after losing a match and not giving me a way to quit or try something else - that was a little frustrating. I also wish in practice mode it would display all the moves so you could work through them and, you know, practice. Maybe it does this and I couldn't figure out how? I really need a lot of practice :(

It's a little hard to go back to playing these "simpler" fighters, with so few available moves. I kind of miss the crazier stuff you can do and see, in say, Tekken DR (which I was just playing last night). I really miss not being able to run, of all things. And it's easier to do button + direction combos than SFII's joystick twists and z shapes, at least for me. Will practice a lot more before going back online.

This website (URL to be announced) will not only track your win/loss record, but will go into granular stats, like how many times you’ve thrown a character or how many projectiles you’ve launched. This website will be the definitive place to flaunt your Street Fighter prowess.

Man the Xbox controller sucks for fighting games. The d-pad is worthless.

circa1916, Wednesday, 26 November 2008 18:03 (seventeen years ago)

so I played a ton of SF2 when it came out, in the arcade and on SNES. Then I lost track of it, but on a few trips to arcades since I've seen SF boxes that are reaaaaaally fast, like the fighting is super turbo. Is this "Turbo HD remix" one of those super fast ones? And if so, is it straightforward to move from being decent at the slow one, to being decent at the fast one?

Euler, Wednesday, 26 November 2008 18:09 (seventeen years ago)

and the speed looks slow enough to be good at it. plus, if its anything like the old games than all the moves are basically the same as street fighter 2, and the characters are cooler looking.

every time i played a KOF game, I felt like i was playing a SF game while holding the controller upside down. still i will buy that hell out of that game cos hd sprites = <3

in fact, on HD remix, i bought it today with the web marketplace... should be DLed when i get home!

Everyone is a Jedi (Will M.), Wednesday, 26 November 2008 22:40 (seventeen years ago)

Man, this is super addictive. I can feel myself getting better. I just won like 3 of the last 5 tournaments.

It's hard playing with the Xbox controller, but I've learned you're better off just using the analog stick because that d-pad is hopeless.

Best fighting game netcode, like, ever btw.

I'm not even on 1080p, there aren't so much graphical glitches as there are... well... some of their faces look funny.

Some are cool, like I like Blanka's look, Ryu's okay, E. Honda's cool... but Cammy's face just looks off. Like they didn't use enough colors or something. Ditto Zangief's face.

Everyone is a Jedi (Will M.), Thursday, 27 November 2008 20:21 (seventeen years ago)

Like they didn't use enough colors or something

actually this totally bugs me looking at all the screenshots i've seen: they seem to have gone about it from the position that anything suggesting they have more colour options available to them than in the original designs would be some kind of MASSIVE SACRILEGE, with the result that these newjack versions of everyone look a lot more glossy, depthless, uninteresting

thomp, Thursday, 27 November 2008 23:00 (seventeen years ago)

or: wtf internet sf2, get some friends and a snes

thomp, Thursday, 27 November 2008 23:01 (seventeen years ago)

There aren't any console versions of Super Turbo outside of, I believe, a Japanese Dreamcast port. And who has time to get people together to play SF anymore?

Some of the art is admittedly bland (obv. faithfulness to the original + utilitarianism took precedence over badassing it up), but game's still fucking great.

circa1916, Friday, 28 November 2008 00:08 (seventeen years ago)

I suppose I meant "utilitarian approach" above.

Thinking about nerding out and buying a stick for this and Street Figher 4 when it comes out. Anyone have any opinions about what's decent?

circa1916, Friday, 28 November 2008 00:32 (seventeen years ago)

I kind of dig the standard multiplayer function even though you do more spectating than playing. It's a good recreation of a bunch of dudes standing around a machine with their quarters up. I actually get a little nervous when it's my time to play.

i ended up ordering the 360 standard Hori EX2 fighting stick. Apparently it's good, not top tier, but I'm not spending over 100 bucks for a damn controller. $60 was hard enough.

I considered waiting for the SFIV controller but that's too far off and I'm impatient. Also, despite Capcom's assurances, wtf with picking Mad Catz, a company famous for its cheap, poorly made peripherals.

circa1916, Monday, 1 December 2008 02:47 (seventeen years ago)

That makes me wonder again, I guess the old American-style, corn dog stick (like on the X-Arcade) is really out of vogue, huh? I don't even remember the last console stick that wasn't using the Japanese ball style. I don't have a major preference myself, though it's just a weird slow realization, since they weren't as common in arcades 15-20 years ago for fighting games here.

I totally agree about spending $100 on a single controller, even $60 is tough sell.

Nhex, Monday, 1 December 2008 02:51 (seventeen years ago)

Yeah, there really don't seem to be many American style sticks out there for purchase. Japanese sticks typically use square gates too, I believe. Seems weird, but a lot of people swear by it. That's going to be weird to get used to.

circa1916, Monday, 1 December 2008 03:42 (seventeen years ago)

czn's wiki link proves it: I don't just suck at SFII, I'm not even playing the same damn game.

GM, Monday, 1 December 2008 14:11 (seventeen years ago)

I am horrible at this game. :/

polyphonic, Monday, 1 December 2008 17:08 (seventeen years ago)

yeah, it's humiliating. I thought there was a glitch in an online match-up yesterday; I figured the other player got dropped almost immediately after the board loaded, 'cuz his Ryu didn't do a damn thing. I beat him twice straight with no reaction whatsoever. It was like the training mode. I was one or two hits away from winning the third and final round when he finally came to life; I didn't get another hit on him, and he won 3 to 2 with two perfect rounds. Guy was just toying with me. Does that warrant negative player feedback?

GM, Monday, 1 December 2008 17:13 (seventeen years ago)

yeah, but I don't think there's a 'was a fanny' option : /

Leee, Monday, 1 December 2008 22:12 (seventeen years ago)

I've kind of fallen in love with the inscrutability of hardcore (or apparently even semi-hardcore) SFII players. reading through reaction threads feels like reading Clockwork Orange again for the first time.

circa1916, Friday, 5 December 2008 04:01 (seventeen years ago)

can't stop reading about all the little technical aspects of this game:

"If you try to dragon punch against someone crossing you up, it's possible (though rare) that the game will turn you around and give you a backwards dragon punch. That's exactly what you want if someone crosses you up. I call this phenomenon "CvS help" because this happens much more frequently in CvS1 and 2.

You can make this happen on purpose if you try. Watch Choi and you'll see him get insane dragon punches when people try to cross him up. I'm pretty sure Valle does this too. If you are on the left side and someone is crossing you up so that they will end up on the left, here's what you do. First hold right. That's the first input of the dragon punch, so that part isn't tricky or anything. Next, roll the stick to down. That's also not tricky because it's the next input the dragon punch usually has. But the tricky part is to keep going to down-left. So the total motion from the perspective of being on the left is: f, df, d, db + p. You must time this so that the enemy crosses over you just barely before you do the db+p. So what you've done is part of the command from one side and part of the command from the other. This works in general in Street Fighter, this is just a very good use of that trick.

After Ryu crosses up the enemy, he can do low forward fireball as a standard combo everyone does. A very simple alternative that you only really see experts do on purpose is to WAIT, then do low forward (red) fireball. If you mixup crossup (blockd) into throw, and crossup (blocked) into (wait...) low forward, fireball (knockdown), it's pretty good.

A harder combo is crossup rh, low strong, low fierce, fireball. Or you can do crossup roundhouse, rush punch (f+fierce, 2 hits), low forward, fireball (or replace fireball with super if you are good). That's advanced stuff, but experts do it.

lots of tips to be had lurking the sirlin forums

czn (cozwn), Sunday, 7 December 2008 18:47 (seventeen years ago)

I peeked at this one thread about "scrub tactics" and "cheap throws". I agree on some level about the general attitude of being open to using all moves that are in the game, though most of these discussions are among super hardcore players, and I think the vast majority general players do not play or think like this (Play 2 Win, bitches). (though that's another discussion altogether) Throw loops are not particularly fun for most people, and this forum post actually outlines how throws have not been designed the same way again since ST.

But if you look at this thread, notice every single other poster just crows the same old "play 2 win" philosophy without taking into account other, perhaps real world considerations of playing with other human beings, and perhaps maybe this game has some weak design choices? Especially considering this new version of ST has a ton of balance changes and bug fixes. The often-used excuse is that, well, this game must be great because a small cadre of super hardcore players have stuck with it for over a decade and learned to live with the more broken aspects. But nah, this guy is a scrub, there's no such thing as "playing fair" or "honorable" in the world of SF...

Kind of interesting that charge times are slightly random. That's got to be a huge deal for the high-level frame counter types.

I've found that I can take care of most folks pretty handily with Balrog and M. Bison. Like I was playing some dude's Guile and getting my ass kicked as Ken then switched to Bison and almost got a double perfect. Repeated this several times. Dude didn't know how to handle him. And Balrog's super is RIDICULOUS. That's completely turned around several matches.

My Hori EX2 fighting stick came in (no shame in it). I've only used it on my MAME Super Turbo, but I like it a lot. I know I'm going to get my ass handed to me online as I get used to it though. The arcade single player of ST is insanely hard by the way. It seems at least as difficult as Remix's Expert level, maybe worse. Shit must've killed some wallets back in the day.

circa1916, Tuesday, 9 December 2008 02:20 (seventeen years ago)

Eh, I think the NO SPAMMING rule is kinda lame. In high level play there aren't any rules about playing honorably, you just do what's necessary to win. I think Sirlin even mentions something to that effect in one of his videos. If you can't counter someone spamming fireballs or something, that's your fault.

PERSONALLY, I think spamming is lame and sucks out a lot of the fun, but you're better served learning how to counter that stuff instead of whining about "scrubs". My 2 cents.

circa1916, Tuesday, 9 December 2008 03:42 (seventeen years ago)

Also, dude says "SPAMMING IS NOT AN EFFECTIVE STRATEGY" which is bullshit. You wouldn't get all upset about it if it wasn't causing you trouble.

circa1916, Tuesday, 9 December 2008 03:45 (seventeen years ago)

yeah, I disagree with tht pt too, every move has an effective counter, and every character has a way to advance on fireballs... if I can't beat a spammer I always feel like it's my fault, not theirs

czn (cozwn), Tuesday, 9 December 2008 03:48 (seventeen years ago)

Yeah, exactly. The whole complaining about n00b scrubs just annoys me in general. You should be able to punish cheap players if you know what you're doing and it shouldn't even be an issue. I mean, it's annoying yeah, but facing these dudes will make you a better player.

circa1916, Tuesday, 9 December 2008 04:06 (seventeen years ago)

Those Destructoid posts... well, they live up to that site's usual quality. Not be able to counter a spam Bison's torpedo isn't exactly up to the level of classic ST noogie/headbutt traps, now.

Nhex, Tuesday, 9 December 2008 07:17 (seventeen years ago)

This is like 1000x better with a stick. Night and day. I'm actually hitting dragon punches regularly.

circa1916, Thursday, 11 December 2008 10:04 (seventeen years ago)

I've been enjoying reading Sirlin's board and a few other places to see what pros think so far. Akuma seems to be considered the most powerful right now. Apparently his hitboxes are messed up too -- he's invincible when throwing a fireball, for instance.

abanana, Thursday, 11 December 2008 11:25 (seventeen years ago)

Yeah, I've read that too. Apparently he takes more damage than any if the other characters though. I think it'll take a little while longer to get a consensus on tiers.

Surprised by the community in this game. I avoided the headset for a while expecting constant trash talking pubescents but literally everyone I've played against tonight has been cool. Got like 3 friend requests.

circa1916, Thursday, 11 December 2008 11:39 (seventeen years ago)

the learning curve of adapting to a stick is like starting again, but gradually getting good at it is satisfying. Still not sure I can consistently use all six buttons over the course of a fight.

in the temporary, embarrassing absence of a consistent Shoryuken I've been playing with charge characters. Bison and Balrog are pretty easy to win with online.

some of the remixed music is pretty good and some of it is massively ill-judged nonsense by the kind of fanfic writing basement dwellers who were rightly marginalised before the dawn of the Internet

post-mortem

czn (cozwn), Thursday, 11 December 2008 17:04 (seventeen years ago)

"Capcom really wanted Alpha 3. That's not seen as a good tournament game. And also even if you wanted to do Alpha 3 the number of characters are so large that it's an even bigger project. Alpha 2 characters are sub set so it just makes sense to do Alpha 2 first and then do Alpha 3 second, if you really wanted to get to Alpha 3. They also wanted to do 3rd Strike but 3rd Strike has a lot of animation. It has maybe three times as much and you saw how much of a struggle it was to even finish HD Remix.

VideoGamer.com: So why did Capcom want to do Alpha 3?

DS: They just really liked Alpha 3! It has all these different versions, and it's been ported to PSP, and Anniversary Collection, every time they add some new features to it and add some new characters to it. I don't know, I guess they think it sells well. Maybe the really casual crowd likes that game but it's mostly rejected by the hardcore crowd. So anyway there's all these different possibilities of what to do. I said my advice is to start with Super Turbo because it's the first in a progression, it's a good game and I know a lot about it so I'm going to be the most effective on that one. And they did."

think you can take the anniversay collection of 3rd strike online

czn (cozwn), Thursday, 11 December 2008 19:56 (seventeen years ago)

yeah, the anniversary collection works online but no-one plays it. Think the hardcore guys all moved onto PC emulation because of XBOX pads being terrible

3rd strike is really great even though half the characters are kind of aesthetically boring and it has biggest cunt of a last boss imaginable. One of his supers takes off about a quarter of your health even when you block it! He comes back to life with a full health bar if you beat him while he has a super! And then if he beats you after that he gets a fucking perfect!

Glans Christian Christian christian Christian Andersen (MPx4A), Thursday, 11 December 2008 20:03 (seventeen years ago)

Dudley is great though; think after the Balrog-is-Tyson thing they decided to do some kind of semi-positive rebalancing of the black boxer stereotype and did this Eubank-like Brit posho who says "let's fight like gentlemen", "gutter trash" and "you have no dignity" during fights and has a butler come down from a helicopter with a pot of tea when he wins. His stage is on "Downing Street SW4", outside a tube station and Harrods.

Glans Christian Christian christian Christian Andersen (MPx4A), Thursday, 11 December 2008 20:08 (seventeen years ago)

Haven't read the second link yet (cozwn) but I love Alpha 3. Sure it's not quite as tight or well balanced as SF III, but it just feels more fun in some ways, and not is intensely crazy/button mashing as the Vs. games.

Nhex, Thursday, 11 December 2008 22:15 (seventeen years ago)

Maybe the really casual crowd likes that game but it's mostly rejected by the hardcore crowd

pretty sure the "serious tournament" guys who quibble over tiers and hitboxes are probably some of the worst cunts on the planet tbh

The online in this is great. Getting stuck in a lobby spectating a match ought to be boring, but scouting some flash guy winning in straight rounds and expecting to get caned, then playing him and winning is fun

Ken is a fucking monster in this game

Also, the AI Akuma has pretty much no idea what to do when faced with a whiffed fierce flash kick

Glans Christian Christian christian Christian Andersen (MPx4A), Friday, 12 December 2008 00:25 (seventeen years ago)

I wish Ken wasn't so damn overused in this game. I love playing as him but when I get in a tourney and 5 of the 8 guys are Ken it kinda sucks.

circa1916, Friday, 12 December 2008 04:23 (seventeen years ago)

Yeah I started feeling guilty about using him in about three fights running. The fierce dragon punch is useless as anti-air, but if you combo into it at any point you've pretty much won

I assumed the ten throws achievement was near-impossible, but I got it about 2/3 of the way through a match last night. I am cheap. Nobody has messaged me calling me a cunt yet though.

GPPO works pretty well, actually. Supposedly, Capcom actually consulted the guy for some tips on their own networking code for Remix! I don't believe MvC 2 is supported by MAME yet or GGPO, but MvC 1 is.

Cozwn, check out Vampire Savior. I don't know if I would call them "essential" but I thought all of the Marvel and Vs. games were pretty fun (even if they are "broken" at high level play). Anybody care to explain what the difference is between a scoreboard match & a friendly match?

Also I played a few games online, but when I checked the leaderboard, it said it had no record for me. Is that just because it takes a while to update, or do only tournament games count (I was playing scoreboard matches)? Or?

Lingbert, Thursday, 18 December 2008 04:32 (seventeen years ago)

Akuma seems like he's still kind of overpowered (especially with the air fireball, which of course SF2 was never designed for and part of why he was overpowered for ST). Is he that unbalanced in Remix or is this video unusual?

Nhex, Thursday, 18 December 2008 04:43 (seventeen years ago)

jeff, scoreboard and friendly surely just mean ranked and player? there is a problem w/the rankings right now where everyone's is at 0 (at least on the 360 thr is) so maybe that's what you encountered? most everyone is avoiding playing ranked from what I know, till it's fixed (maybe it has been fixed already?)

lingbert, tht match is the video of the first shoryuken HDR tournament final (or final of the first tournament of half-decent players in HDR); posted it cos I thought it ws a good example of akuma beasting. there have been a lot of complaints abt akuma being unbalanced still (despite his nerfs) and the dude who won tournament (w/akuma) even says he shd be banned

- you can charge balrog's turn-around punch with the kick buttons and still play away merrily with the punches

I feel that the lessons one can learn from playing these games can be applied to real life. Is Street Fighter not a continuous process of self-betterment? Would that not be a responsible way to live your life as well?

keystone II looks sick

OɔIXEW (cozwn), Sunday, 21 December 2008 14:48 (seventeen years ago)

I practice offline and feel like I'm getting better, but when I go online I'm just getting destroyed. It's frustrating as hell. Naturally I have a lot to learn, having never really played SFII except extremely casually, but you would think there were other people out there in the same boat - it would be a lot more fun to be able to have matches that I feel like I have at least a chance of winning. Lose so many times in a row and it's hard to keep going. I guess I still haven't actually played too much, but I'm getting too frustrated every time I turn on the game. Still haven't even been able to make it past the third stage offline on medium though, so maybe I should keep working at that and forget about online for a while?

It should be noted: I've heard a lot about how smooth the online is supposed to be for this, but all weekend playing it on the ps3 has been a lag fest - every match seems to be running at half speed, which isn't making anything any easier. Probably works better if you aren't doing random quick matches, but I have a pretty good connection, so at least some of the matches should be okay. The game should be doing a better job of matching me up with opponents I getter a better ping with. Are you folks on the 360 getting lag too (maybe I'll switch over)?

Jeff LeVine, Monday, 22 December 2008 05:31 (seventeen years ago)

Try using E. Honda. His fierce headbutt seems to have a pretty high priority against a lot of attacks.

i may have played the least out of the 360 ppl but my on-line play has been smooth.

i've been practicing on my own, mostly, and thought i was doing well but i got sonned by my 15 y/o cousin tonite needed a hanukkah miracle just to take one game from him. i asked him how much he plays and when he told me i realize that i'm nowhere near putting in enough time to get my skill up to the on-line dudez.

the curious case of poster burt_stanton (Lamp), Monday, 22 December 2008 05:52 (seventeen years ago)

My online record so far is 2 wins 14 losses :(

But honestly, I don't know how I won those two games!

I was mostly playing Ryu, but I've played a few matches as E. Honda too.

Maybe 14 losses doesn't sound like so much, but I did just get 9 losses in a row, which is when I (temporarily) had to quit. I'm not used to being so horrible at a game.

Jeff LeVine, Monday, 22 December 2008 06:09 (seventeen years ago)

Don't feel too bad about it! Even though Capcom announced the fast success of this game, I still believe that many people who are going online and playing SF2 are the hardest of the hardcore - people who got into the game 16 years ago and have played hundreds (if not thousands) of matches in their lifetime. It's probably equivalent to going online today and playing something like Unreal Tournament solo deathmatch - who's left that's playing straight up FPS stuff like that anymore? Just the highly skilled, really well-practiced ones.

My view might be colored by what I've seen elsewhere on the internet, forums like Shoryuken, and playing people in Kaillera/GGPO emulation (now there's a very narrow hardcore crowd, those who even go through the trouble of getting that stuff all working). But for the most part, that is what's left of the 2D fighting crowd. Hopefully Tatunoko vs. Capcom and SF IV do well.

All that said, you should definitely practice more on single player and beat the game with a few characters. Playing real humans, though, as you have guessed by now is a totally different scenario and generally much more difficult, since the CPU relies more on near-impossible reflexes and the same attack patterns.

Nhex, Monday, 22 December 2008 10:32 (seventeen years ago)

I think Nhex's first paragraph is very much otm here; there are a lot of people kicking about in the lobbies (I bump into the same people over and over for some reason) who really know what they're doing. I've been in lobbies where I've gone 0-10 and it's really quite dispiriting (especially when you have to sit out a few games to get another credit; I filter for 4-player matches now to limit the wait time). There are a few noobs (like me!) around but they do seem to be in the minority. Thankfully for the most part the community for this game seems to be one of the most well-mannered and friendly I've come across on Live. Yeah, there's the odd trash talking straggler but mostly it's dudes giving you credit and tips.

Probably best to try cutting your teeth against some PS3 buddies (or even Ilxors! I think Leee is on PS3) before braving Ranked!

I think I'm ready to give you a beatdown now, Circa!!!!!

90% of people in the public lobbies (and in Ranked) are playing with a stick (or 6-button fight pad) I'd imagine which is night and day against the stock controller. Being able to flashkick / dragon punch on reaction levels the playing field for people knocked down.

Also, I've been poking around the sites and forums that Nhex mentions and God there's a lot to read and take in about this game. I had no idea.

OɔIXEW (cozwn), Monday, 22 December 2008 11:24 (seventeen years ago)

I'm a little tired of getting the DISCONNECTED message right after the character select screen. Disconnects in Ranked (which seems to happen about 50% of the time) count as a loss so it's not even worth it for me. If I actually get into a match things are usually fine, but getting there sometimes seems a little tricky.

Coz I'm definitely up for some rematches. I've noticed you got a pretty solid Deejay crossup combo down.

VideoGamer.com: As the designer of Super Turbo HD Remix and perhaps one of the best Street Fighter players in the world, what's your opinion of Street Fighter 4?

DS: (Laughs). Oh they really don't want me to answer that one over there at Capcom.

VideoGamer.com: Really?

DS: Yeah! They don't want me to say anything about that.

VideoGamer.com: Well as a fighting game fan and someone who knows how fighting games work what's your opinion of it?

DS: Well let me tell you why that's so hard to answer. Let's say that hypothetically I had something negative to say about it. Then what people might think is that the reason I'm saying something negative about it is that it's the competing game to HD Remix. It shouldn't be, but some people might perceive that, that I'm just trash talking that other game. Of course that would have nothing to do with it at all. You put a Street Fighter game in front of me and I like it or I don't, regardless of whatever project I'm working on.

VideoGamer.com: Given that you've explained that, will you comment on it at all?

DS: Maybe if I could be in charge of Street Fighter 4 Champion Edition it might be a little better.

VideoGamer.com: Say you were in charge of Street Fighter 4 Champion Edition, how would it differ from Street Fighter 4?

DS: Well I would take the horizontal distance that jumps travel and I would make it longer. I would take the vertical distance that jumps travel and make it shorter and change the speed that those jumps happen at. They're all very very different than the Street Fighter 2 series. When people roll in that game they are completely invulnerable. When you get knocked down there's a tech roll and you get up quickly. It's invulnerable, so you basically always do it. When you get hit out of the air you fall slowly. I don't know why you fall more slowly than in the Street Fighter 2 series. You throw with two buttons but throwing with one button is a simpler command and never really caused any problems in Street Fighter 2, Street Fighter Alpha 2 or Guilty Gear. All those games have one button throws. It goes on...

VideoGamer.com: You don't like it do you David?

DS: It wasn't my idea of how it would turn out.

abanana, Thursday, 25 December 2008 01:26 (seventeen years ago)

One of the weirdest things I find about these interviews he's been giving has been his grousing about the struggle and fighting he did with Capcom during the game's development, following his leaving Backbone. Clearly he wants to complain about it, passive-aggressively coming up to the line of flat-out insulting his former employers, but acts like he still wants to work for them to do follow-up patches. As if he was campaigning for fan support to pressure the company into rehiring him, but that seems... unlikely. But, on the other hand I still appreciate the level of candor he has given about the story, even if it can seem self-serving.

I will definitely give him credit for doing all those massive write-ups about the balance changes and staying in communication with the fans through his blog. That was a lot of work, effort and sell and it paid off.

Also really interesting is the reveal (I'm not sure if it was in this interview, but I think it was) that he was working on what would have been SF IV a couple of years ago - I wonder how that would've been. I think SF IV on a casual level will do fine in terms of sales, but it does remain to be seen how "tournament" ready it is.

Those are all pluses, but then a minus would be maybe Capcom would think that it's just too many Street Fighters and people can't tell them apart, and does anyone remember Alpha 2 over the other ones? So I don't know. I have no idea. All I can do is hope.

Probably the closest he'll come to admitting an incredibly small number of people actually care about Alpha 2.

(although the psp alpha 3 max game adds four characters - Yun, Eagle, Maki, and Ingrid - I hardly think they are essential)

CaptainLorax, Thursday, 29 January 2009 22:40 (seventeen years ago)

Played some Balrog tonight for the first time. Now I understand why people call him "cheap." Most of his moves are way strong & pretty easy to pull off with limited practice.

I do have some questions though - in regards to supers. There's something I don't get about the way you're supposed to initiate them, as I basically can't. It's the two move thing (maybe) that's causing my problems. For instance with Balrog, from what I understand, you're supposed to hold the joystick back for two seconds, tap it forward, push it back for two seconds, then tap it forward while either pressing punch or kick (at the same time as the forward tap?). When I try, I just walk backwards, stumble forwards, walk backwards, then stumble forward / punch - just can't get the super to go off. Anybody good at these, who can explain maybe what I'm doing wrong or just explain in detail / break down what you have to do? I have the same problem with other characters so far, like Ryu. Sometimes I can do Guile's, since it's just the one joystick movement and one button press, but I find he's a hard character for me to use since he's so defensive & most of his stuff is kind of for up close.

Jeff LeVine, Wednesday, 4 February 2009 02:02 (seventeen years ago)

Ah no no - you don't hold it back for two seconds more than one time, at the beginning of the move. The motion for Balrog's super would be:

Hold Back for two seconds > push Forward > push Back > push Forward + punch simultaneously.

After the first Back hold it's all one fluid, ticking motion. They changed Guile's, right? It used to be kind of awkward (Hold Down-Back, Down-Forward, Down-Back, Up-Forward + kick).

Nhex, Wednesday, 4 February 2009 03:17 (seventeen years ago)

Thanks!

Jeff LeVine, Wednesday, 4 February 2009 04:39 (seventeen years ago)

I feel like I'm making some progress.

But now, what am I doing wrong when I try to do characters like Ryu's super? I've pulled it off a few times in practice, but only after many many tries (not sure what I did different on the times it worked). I know it's basically the same down to six o'clock, rotate to three then press punch as his regular hadouken (which I can do most of the time I want with no problems), except that the first time you don't hit punch and the second time you're supposed to, but I can't seem to pull it off. Is there a little (obvious) thing I'm doing wrong here too?

Thanks again for the help. I'm going to keep working at this until I don't (completely) suck dammit

Jeff LeVine, Wednesday, 4 February 2009 05:13 (seventeen years ago)

I have trouble with it too. I think it's just tricky to do on a gamepad.

I rank the super motions from easiest to hardest:

back chargers (honda, balrog, etc)
guile's new motion
double shoryuken (ken) (comes out accidentally a lot, often in good situations)
double fireball (ryu, sagat)
yoga flame (sim, gief)
old throw motion (gief)
vega's motion / guile's old motion (i have never done this successfully)

abanana, Wednesday, 4 February 2009 06:35 (seventeen years ago)

oh, and Akuma's motion I haven't used in HD Remix yet, although I've used it in the SFA games. It's just silly.

abanana, Wednesday, 4 February 2009 06:37 (seventeen years ago)

wht is akuma's motion? jb.jb.->sh.f.?

cozwn, Wednesday, 4 February 2009 08:42 (seventeen years ago)

balrog is tons of fun to play but pretty hard to score wins w/against semi-decent players unless you're semi-decent yourself, I find. he's easy to zone for shotos and if you're impatient or your timing's bad you'll eat a lot of fireballs and get nowhere near them. his headbutt goes through fireballs and stuffs so many attacks (ryu/ken dp, hurricane kick, fei long chicken wing, honda torpedo) and the range on the fierce vn is just stupid. his super is insane obv. the best protip I got on balrog is to execute his headbutt down-back up-back + punch. that way you are charging back all the time and you can retain your back charge. it's tricky with a pad, but with a stick that means you can jump through a fireball and land straight into a rush punch or even better super.

the real "cheap" (not tht I'm bothered) characters I think are honda (his jab headbutt now goes through fireballs, he can store his ochio, he can get you into a really easy throw loop which is hard to reverse) and akuma (invincible dragon punch w/crazy range, air fireball controls so much horiz and vert space, an unblockable super with some very easy set ups)

cozwn, Wednesday, 4 February 2009 08:56 (seventeen years ago)

guys who play Akuma tend to be either embarrassingly crap and just trying to rinse the "best" character or an unending nightmare of dragon punches and air fireball crossup shit. Honda is a pain in the ass, even though I've never had anyone get on the throw loop thing

still caning Bison and tend to either flounder pathetically in the corner with no decent anti-air, or win by two or three rounds against anyone who can't defend 20 headstomps a round properly and end up stunned after 10 seconds

might try Balrog soon

Glans Kafka (MPx4A), Wednesday, 4 February 2009 09:27 (seventeen years ago)

Happy to help, Jeff. I understand there's a Practice Mode in Remix - is there an option to show inputs? (flashing arrows/buttons on screen that show what you're pressing on the controller i.e. Up, down, down-right, jab, roundhouse, etc.) Many modern fighting games have this, it's often helpful when learning the timing of complex moves.

Cozwn: I don't know how the timing is in Remix, but most versions of the Raging Demon require a Neutral after forward (like letting the stick go back to center), the trick is tap forward quick then hit LK, HP. In sequence it's Jab, Jab, Forward, Neutral, Short, Fierce. You should not hold forward while when you hit LK.

Nhex, Wednesday, 4 February 2009 12:56 (seventeen years ago)

nah, no neutral needed in HDR : )

cozwn, Wednesday, 4 February 2009 13:04 (seventeen years ago)

cozwn, Wednesday, 4 February 2009 13:08 (seventeen years ago)

That... doesn't look like a good thing, if it's really that doable. Like Akuma needs the Kara Demon in this...

Nhex, Wednesday, 4 February 2009 13:42 (seventeen years ago)

I posted this way upthread but it's useful here, check out 1:06, 2:28, and 4:43 for his most common setup

cozwn, Wednesday, 4 February 2009 13:51 (seventeen years ago)

1:06 and 4:43 is what I'd consider a good use of it, basically a headfake landing. The opponent is supposed to try to see it coming and jump instead of block. 2:28 seems kind of weird that he would catch Guile so far back on landing, but then I remembered that they made the Demon travel much further in Remix. As long as you're not trapped into it from a blocked air fireball or something like that, the RD doesn't look too bad there - that said, the air fireball still seems to be a major imbalance as it always was, since SF2 was never designed for it.

I don't really like these kinds of hit>block>throw loop competitions, though I know that's how it often gets at a higher level. At least Guile starts putting up a fight in the final match and they both had to start changing up a little.

abanana, Friday, 6 March 2009 00:07 (seventeen years ago)

Played about an hour ranked of this tonight hoping some of what I've learned in SFIV carried back over, but no... this just seems SO much more difficult, and the competition still seems world's better (I went one for thirteen). It's interesting to compare the two though. Here, it seems like you just have to be so much more precise, quick and on your game + you have quite a few less options. It feels a lot less smooth, but it's still fun and I want to find the time to keep working at it a bit. Seems that online has died off a lot though. With fewer people playing I seemed to get stuck with a lot laggier matches, which was disappointing as pre-SFIV there was hardly ever any lag. I like the way quick matches work here so much better, just dumping you into a match. I don't understand the browsing ranked matches in SFIV since nine out of ten times you select one, it's already full (hopefully the online lobbies for IV will get patched).

Jeff LeVine, Monday, 9 March 2009 04:13 (seventeen years ago)

Finally won my first match! Took about twenty five tries!

WOOKIE JOHNSON (forksclovetofu), Thursday, 12 March 2009 17:13 (seventeen years ago)

The patch for this is out & it seems like the leaderboards finally work now, which is nice. They did have to wipe the old stats though (it looks like). You also see your own wins and loses before each ranked online match, which is going to get embarrassing if I don't get better quick. It seems like your opponent's win/loss ratio doesn't display or maybe I just fought a bunch of people who were playing their first game post patch (as they all read 0/0)?

Have been playing a bit more of this lately & have been getting a little better / at least not losing to completely hopeless players anymore (even beat a shit Akuma this morning). Can't seem to get the timing down on Balrog's TAP to avoid fireballs however, which is really frustrating. Anybody have a breakdown of exactly when you're supposed to let go?

lo (cozwn), Friday, 20 March 2009 18:38 (seventeen years ago)

That's what I used to think too, but I recently watched an old training video of SSF2 Turbo (the weird one with the hyper teenager in Capcom's offices) where he does it (they say at the very last second?), and in Sirlin's notes he doesn't mention taking it out...

Jeff LeVine, Friday, 20 March 2009 19:24 (seventeen years ago)

I'm not convinced. you don't have the old video to hand do you? some moves have difft properties at different ranges, e.g.

Somebody had posted the video on the Shoryuken forum, but I can't find it on there anymore. Now that I think about it though, perhaps its for one of the other variations of the game? Turbo Hyper Fighting? It's the full hour long version of this...

anybody? going on?

continuous flow crustastunna (forksclovetofu), Sunday, 29 March 2009 03:51 (seventeen years ago)

I wanna use Balrog in this (I'm trying), but I'm having the hardest time. Without the turn punch ability to pass through fireballs, it just seems like he doesn't have enough options? Which is maybe weird to say, since he's such a highly ranked character. Shotos just give me the hardest / most frustrating game with Balrog & I can't seem to figure it out. I know you can headbutt through them or jump over them, but as soon as I come down from either option, it seems like the other guys have time to move up and nail me with a crouching kick or something, causing me to lose my charge (which you also lose on a forward jump), then they can step back, and repeat. My record in this game is becoming embarrassing. It's tough switching between this and SFIV, since IV plays so easy & this is like pounding my head against a wall (in IV besides passing through fireball with headbutts or jumps, you have the option to TAP through them (got that timing down real nice) or even EX dash through 'em - so many options that you almost are happy to see those fireballs coming). Any advice? Maybe I just need to learn another character :(

lo (cozwn), Wednesday, 1 April 2009 06:57 (seventeen years ago)

I was trying to research what you had to do to get to Akuma online last night and there seems to be conflicting reports. Then a number a perfects, I saw 1-3 listed, don't know what's right... so yeah, haven't done that yet

Wookie Johnson Strikes Back (forksclovetofu), Saturday, 4 April 2009 23:42 (seventeen years ago)

this game gets frustrating when: some guy comes on and dominates you and the other three people playing for thirty matches and plays twelve different characters and it would almost be BETTER if he was on microphone so you could tell if he's a nice guy who regrets this sort of domination but there you are or if he really is a douche.
argh

cozwn - can you please use your awesome video finding skills to track down a video of a good Balrog (Boxer) dealing with a fireball spammer in this game? Please?

Jeff LeVine, Tuesday, 7 April 2009 15:02 (seventeen years ago)

Coz, I'm straight calling you out. Get some this evening.
I got on a fifteen match run last night and something clicked. I'm not good yet, but I can hang with the good guys and have found about four working combos, an aerial neg, a good starting pose and have figured out basic timing to evade the classic e. honda, vega and guile attacks.
Let's do this!

i'm warning you with peace and love but i have too much to do (forksclovetofu), Tuesday, 7 April 2009 16:22 (seventeen years ago)

ok, I'll be on this evening, hit me up

it'll be a nice change of pace from iv

jeff, I'll have a looksee what I can dig up; my head is full of iv so I can't even give you any strats myself

lo (cozwn), Tuesday, 7 April 2009 16:49 (seventeen years ago)

jeff, jump to 6:00 here and you see balrog versus the og fireball spammer "o.sagat", things balrog does to get through this:

- headbutt goes throw fireballs
- jump straight up and press HP then move to the side in the air (so called "waggle punch") gives you a little hang time
- jumps over them, be mindful of spacing though, you don't want to eat a sweep
- performs headbutt by charging down-back and then pressing up-back+P, this way he retains his horizontal charge and he can headbutt throw a fireball then on landing he can rush punch

lo (cozwn), Tuesday, 7 April 2009 20:54 (seventeen years ago)

also yeah the balrog is daigo so you might need to practice a bit

lo (cozwn), Tuesday, 7 April 2009 20:54 (seventeen years ago)

there's probably already a post about this, but does anybody have a good link to a moves list of "this moves faster than this, this beats this" and combos and such?

If God Loves Me, Why Can't I Get My Locker Open? (forksclovetofu), Tuesday, 7 April 2009 20:55 (seventeen years ago)

balrog's super has start-up frames of invincibility too, so if you time it and space it right you can breeze right through fireballs and mess someone up

lo (cozwn), Tuesday, 7 April 2009 21:08 (seventeen years ago)

forks, this is helpful (it's about ST, but whatever close enough) and gives you good details on game mechanics and in-depth strats, combos and match-up details for each char: http://www.shoryuken.com/wiki/index.php/Super_Street_Fighter_2_Turbo

Forks - sorry I dropped out kinda quick tonight. Had some basketball to watch and dinner to eat.

Jeff LeVine, Friday, 10 April 2009 04:45 (seventeen years ago)

Not at all. We got trapped by a guy much better than us anyway.

If God Loves Me, Why Can't I Get My Locker Open? (forksclovetofu), Friday, 10 April 2009 05:14 (seventeen years ago)

I've noticed I can always get a ranked game, but it seems like it's a pretty small pool of people playing in there now, because I come across a lot of the same names night after night & even though I try to space out my searches, the guy I just fought can often come up again for my next match (or one a few later). Perhaps part of the problem is I usually log on at around the same time every night? Anyhow, I've been playing a lot and feel like I'm slowly getting better, though I'm still pretty awful (post-patch 80 wins to 233 loses). Would you agree that the competition on the weekends seems a bit easier, while on weekdays one seems to mostly come across pretty decent players?

I feel like even my loses are (for the most part) getting more competitive, so that feels good. I'm only really bugged by certain loses where somebody manages to just spam one or two moves that I either don't know the counter for (and can't figure it out), or somehow can't get my timing right on the counter.

Jeff LeVine, Wednesday, 15 April 2009 03:29 (seventeen years ago)

Thanks for the games forks - sorry I'm still pretty much hopeless with anybody but Balrog & not much use with him either. The one game when we both played Honda confused the hell out of me. Apparently I played part of a round thinking I was you and didn't even know I actually won the round? Was confused as hell when the match went to round three!

Jeff LeVine, Thursday, 16 April 2009 03:23 (seventeen years ago)

I've done that before!
You kinda helped me get the gist of Honda; I feel a little better now.
And hopeless in this game is very subjective... i just went 4 and 8 in ranked matches and most of the four I won were pretty hard fought. I do agree that the hardcore kids come out late night weekdays tho'.

forksc-murdertofu (forksclovetofu), Thursday, 16 April 2009 03:33 (seventeen years ago)

Hey, how do I check my overall win total? Is it online somewhere?

forksc-murdertofu (forksclovetofu), Thursday, 16 April 2009 03:36 (seventeen years ago)

You can supposedly check them here (though mine doesn't seem to have updated in at least a day / or it's missing some wins)...
http://www.streetfighter.com/flash/#/sfhd/gamercards/

Or just turn on the game, go to leaderboards, go to remixed all time, then go to your score/friends score. It just keeps tracked of ranked games though. I don't think it tracks non-ranked anywhere :(

Jeff LeVine, Thursday, 16 April 2009 04:10 (seventeen years ago)

Hm. I'm under 50%, but accounting for a learning curve and some thrown matches, I'd say I'm about 65% on average.

ryu is my new fave character in this game. he is super solid and he has dece mix-ups and his new fake fb is too good

cozwn, Saturday, 27 June 2009 22:03 (sixteen years ago)

always surprised by how good the netcode is on this game considering how far apart we are. there was some frame skipping and dropped inputs but it was def playable and still heaps of fun

cozwn, Saturday, 27 June 2009 22:04 (sixteen years ago)

Thanks for the games czn. I really felt my execution was off this morning (I partially will blame slight hangover & input lag). Mainly though, I've still got practice to do at getting more consistent execution. Sometimes I feel like I'm right on and having no problems, but other times, my ability seems to drift slightly out of alignment (if that makes any sense).

As to those knock down loops, I'm pretty sure Ryu's wake up srk will beat Rog's rush down every time.

I've still got a few more Balrog things I need to practice to mix up my game more - and a few match-ups to try to learn. I definitely want to learn to play Ryu and Dictator as secondary characters at some point too.

Jeff LeVine, Sunday, 28 June 2009 18:00 (sixteen years ago)

yeah, the srk does beat it but it's hard with the lag, even with piano-ing :) reversals are so hard in this game anyway

cozwn, Sunday, 28 June 2009 18:02 (sixteen years ago)

Yeah, I'm on 360. I blame the stupid controller; I so frequently go to do a special and bone it cos I'm not that accurate with the stick/pad. Of course, I'm also not good enough to justify a proper stick. :)

cozwn, Sunday, 28 June 2009 22:24 (sixteen years ago)

It seems like a lot of new people picked up the game in the last week since it was on sale. I feel sorry for them... Has there ever been a game more brutal for beginners?

Anybody have some tips for Balrog vs Vega - this is the match-up that really drives me crazy. Also losing to a fairy! Either I can't get the timing right to punch him out of the sky, or he does that crazy rapid rolling attack, which I can block, but not punish. I just feel totally lost.

Jeff LeVine, Tuesday, 30 June 2009 01:47 (sixteen years ago)

My issue is chun vs vega; I lose to clearly inferior players, but I can never beat the yodel leap, yodel leap, foot sweep, foot sweep, yodel leap, etc

wacky out of context phrase is the worst look (forksclovetofu), Tuesday, 30 June 2009 03:05 (sixteen years ago)

Blanka also gives me fits (admittedly, I just ran into a very good one (three times in a row) that almost crushed my soul).

Nhex, Tuesday, 30 June 2009 05:41 (sixteen years ago)

cozwn, Tuesday, 30 June 2009 11:37 (sixteen years ago)

nhex - I'll play some games of Super Turbo w/ u via GGPO someday, if you'd like. Have you been able to pick up a stick yet? Even though remix makes Balrog a little less strong, I do love that they've changed his TAP to a two button move... it makes it a lot easier for me to incorporate it into my game and mix things up more. In original Super Turbo (and IV), having to hold three buttons makes it a lot harder to hold it in reserve... and I haven't really figured out a good technique, where I feel comfortable using it, which is a bummer that having a slightly stronger Balrog with a larger throw range doesn't quite make up for.

Jeff LeVine, Tuesday, 30 June 2009 16:52 (sixteen years ago)

never found too much of an issue with scar v chun; the jump attacks negate the low fireball real well and the dragon punch range is roughly the same as ken/ryu so nothing new to worry about. the guys who can chain tigeruppercut/tigerknee in rapid unpredictable rushes are the ones I'm sweating.

wacky out of context phrase is the worst look (forksclovetofu), Tuesday, 30 June 2009 17:00 (sixteen years ago)

I ran across a by the book high level Sagat last night that destroyed me with a rain of extremely rapid tiger tiger tiger tiger tiger tiger knee tiger uppercut tiger tiger tiger. Really good Sagats willing and able to play by the book are monsters / very hard/unfun match-up for Balrog + possibly everybody else.

Jeff LeVine, Tuesday, 30 June 2009 17:12 (sixteen years ago)

It finally happened - I sent my first taunting hate mail to some dude. A Vega of course, who I came up against in rankend matchmaking three different times(!). The first two games he kicked the shit out of me spamming the usual Vega bullshit moves, but by the third match I FINALLY figured a bit of the Vega game out (or at least his) and after dropping the first two rounds, came back to win the next three... except (of course) just as I was about to win the third, he rage quit. Actually I've been getting a lot more rage quits in ranked lately. I don't really mind it if I'm just dominating the hell out of somebody, say perfecting the first round and well on the way to do it a second time, but when it's a hard fought fight, one you really had to work at to get yourself in a winning position, sure it bugs me, especially because I never pull no matter what (though sometimes I do give up in disgust at myself and the other player's superior skill/knowledge and let him/her destroy my rag doll dummy in the final round for their win). Sent, "aw poor baby," which seemed about right. Then set him up as a player to be avoided - though I noticed yesteday that the game still sets you up with avoided players after I'd negatived one rage quiter only to fight him again (and have him quit on me again in the final round).

If this is what's its gotten like for an average player like me (around 25% of the game's I seem to be winning leading to the other player rage quitting), it's a wonder any good players even bother with the game online

Jeff LeVine, Tuesday, 30 June 2009 21:20 (sixteen years ago)

That said, I'm still (mostly) having a really good time with the game and feel like I'm getting better finally. The key being, as soom of you told me, just to play lots lots lots

Sirlin interview - part 1, part 2.

Not necessarily the best thread for this, but what can ya do. I disagree with a lot of his stuff but he's generally not wrong about SFIV's issues (aside from the weird two-button throw hate), though I still like the game. I do strongly agree with the general idea that there's this illusion that execution-heavy stuff in fighting games, like 1-frame link combos you need to do in Practice Mode for 10 hours, just adds an illusion of depth and doesn't necessarily emphasize the skills you should be looking at in multiplayer games.

I wonder if any other 360 game has generated as much hate mail and negative ratings? What is it about super turbo that turns people into such pathetic crybaby bitches?

Anyhow, I still keep playing a lot. I feel like I've still got a lot to learn, a lot to dig out of this game, but I also feel a bit like I've hit a wall. I just don't feel like I'm getting any better anymore? Still occasionally having a tough time translating moves I'm able to do in the practice room with no problem, into the competitive online situation - mainly throws & combing into super. I'm winning about 50% of my games, but feel those wins are generally against the very weak opponents. Anybody halfway decent still causing me problems (though sometimes we all get lucky).

Any thoughts on taking it to the next level?
