it is a matter of dimensions not of controllers.

desktop type OS = 2d = move mouse or joystick forward to move cursor up
first person view game = 3d = move mouse or joystick back to move viewpoint up.

ledge, Monday, 5 January 2009 20:09 (sixteen years ago)

well, dimensions + viewpoints

was playing Saints Row 2 with my bro over the break and we kept having to switch between inverted and normal when we'd pass the controller back and forth. Until then I had no idea anyone actually preferred normal look. I guess I played too many flight simulators in the 80s and early 90s to ever go back, and why should I? I mean I could learn to type with a different keyboard setup but wtf.

Euler, Monday, 5 January 2009 20:14 (sixteen years ago)

Now there needs to be one about left/right inverted.
(for detached camera games e.g. 3D platformers)

not sure what you mean here but i was thinking of (made-up terminology alert) 'point n go' versus 'rotate then move' paradigms. ie either you push the stick in the direction you want to run, or you move the stick left or right to rotate anti-clockwise or clockwise, then push forward to move in the direction you're facing.

whichever one of these it is that lego star wars has in the x-wing flying sections, really screwed me up.

I'm pretty sure most console FPS games use a joystick for looking on the game controller (albeit a small joystick).

Ah, that famous FPS "flying an airplane".

For flight sims or whatever inverted would make sense, but I don't think we're talking about that.

what U cry 4 (jim), Monday, 5 January 2009 20:46 (sixteen years ago)

But it's far closer to the feeling (thumb control) of a D-pad than it is grasping a joystick. My point is inverted look made sense back then because you were actually simulating being in a cockpit and flying an aircraft, even one in space with jets propelling you from the back.

In most games now, FPS, you simulate your actual eyes and head, so far that it's actually modeled in the game now when you turn your head in any direction. Doesn't it make more sense to move your chin DOWN to look at the ground, and forehead UP to look at the sky? (of course you could make the argument that you're pulling your head back to look up = "down", but come on...)

Nhex, Monday, 5 January 2009 20:50 (sixteen years ago)

flight sims aside, it still makes some kind of intuitive 3D sense to me, like leaning back to look up and leaning forward to look down.

intuitive 3D sense - 100% agreement. Like tilting your head.

❤ⓛⓞⓥⓔ❤ (CaptainLorax), Monday, 5 January 2009 21:00 (sixteen years ago)

flying has nothing to do with it, even in a plane you're just pointing the stick to change your attitude, the plane just happens to fly in the direction it's facing. moving the stick forward = changing the attitude of the [imaginary] plane (i mean surface not aircraft) that the stick is on, tilting it downwards (at the front), and then the plane (i mean aircraft not surface) matches that movement.

clear as mud eh? lucky i don't write technical manuals for a living.

also, it's not just joystick flight simulators. think about the fps pc games. I would play quake with a mouse and the keyboard. pushing the mouse forward would make the camera go down, back in the days of Quake and Duke Nukem 3D. Was this the natural mouse preset, I wonder. But none the less, I played inverted - the only difference was that I used a mouse.

Another poll is mouse control for FPSes. I HATED that.

if some1 could fills me in i would like it (Autumn Almanac), Tuesday, 6 January 2009 03:06 (sixteen years ago)

what?

mouse control for fps is really the only way to play. I've resigned myself to playing shit on my xbox, but that's only because I can't be bothered frittering away money on upgrading my computer every year. Counterstrike with my sensitivity at like 1.3 or something I was the aim master, can never get that kind of control on a pad.

what U cry 4 (jim), Tuesday, 6 January 2009 03:09 (sixteen years ago)

^^^mouse control for fps is really the only way to play. OTM

FPS games - normal. You go to aim at an enemy above and to the left of you - that's where you should move the mouse.

Did you inverted dicks whinge about shit like Virtua Cop etc not being inverted.

Of course, the only way to settle would be some sort of Team Fortress Inv vs. Norm game.

i can follow this if i'm playing something where i'm moving a crosshairs on the screen, like duck hunt or operation wolf ... but if i'm moving the camera, inverted for reasons explained above (looking up = pulling head back)

moonship journey to baja, Tuesday, 6 January 2009 06:35 (sixteen years ago)

Count me as another Inverted. I can get used to non-inverted (like if I'm swapping controllers with my flatmate, who prefers 'normal'), but I just don't find it intuitive. For the record, I've never played a flight sim to any great degree.
With mouse keyboard, it makes sense to move up to move the field of vision up, becuase you're basically pointing to where you want your dude to look. I guess with using inverted it is like if you were standing behind someone, manipulating their head to make them look the right way; you'd pull their head back to make them look up, and push it forward to look down. All in all, i guess it's just down to habit. But 'normals' are just in the habit of being crazy and wrong.

I think there might be an age thing here, I'm too young to remember inverted being the standard so I never thought I'd try out opposite way madness for a laugh. INVERTED 4 LIFE (Autumn Almanac), Wednesday, 7 January 2009 01:09 (sixteen years ago)

Because as with up/down it's the direction in which you're pulling the camera, not the direction in which you're facing it.

Because as with up/down it's the direction in which you're pulling the camera, not the direction in which you're facing it.

― INVERTED 4 LIFE (Autumn Almanac)

my point is if you're holding a camera, you twist to look left, you don't "go" in any direction (or alternatively, if the stick is supposed to be your character's head, you would twist it to look left, just as you would pull it backwards to look up). so it doesn't make sense to me to say that inverting is the only way to look up or down, when you clearly don't do the same thing with left and right. it's inconsistent.

There are many things that can affect where the player subconsciously locates themselves. It could be that an extroverted player is used to interacting in an open and forthright manner may feel they were controlling the game world from in front of themselves. Similarly an introverted player who is more reserved and withdrawn may feel they were controlling the game from a safe distance behind themselves. It could also be that those used to scientific work were used to manipulating theories in their heads and therefore controlling environments from behind themselves. Similarly, those used to artistic work may be more used to working with material in front of themselves.

we are young, extroverted and artistic

you are old and autistic

It could also be that those used to scientific artistic work were used to manipulating theories images in their heads and therefore controlling environments from behind themselves. Similarly, those used to artistic scientific work may be more used to working with material instruments in front of themselves.

Similarly, those who blog about games may in fact be more used to retrieving material directly from their own asses, where smell and decomposition becomes a key factor. We shall have to see whether the big software companies take up this challenge.

Behind: If the player feels they are controlling movement from behind their head with joypad , they are likely to find an inverted control scheme works best for them. Pulling back on their stick therefore tilts their head up and should move the play field up.

THAT IS EXACTLY WHAT I AM SAYING

ǝɟıl h pǝʇɹǝʌuı (Autumn Almanac), Wednesday, 7 January 2009 19:37 (sixteen years ago)

bullshit! up=down and left=left is exactly how aeroplanes work; and the pilot is not really 'going' in any direction, he's just pointing the aircraft in a particular direction, the aircraft itself does the 'going'.

wait, shouldn't left in an aircraft roll the craft towards the left side?

webber, Wednesday, 7 January 2009 22:12 (sixteen years ago)

yeah but only cause of aerodynamics. what about a spaceship? left could just as well = yaw left.

Wait, does anybody but Autumn invert left and right? that's fucking nuts.

joystick, flight sim etc makes sense for inverted, mouselook fps doesn't.

milling through the grinder, grinding through the mill (S-), Thursday, 8 January 2009 02:05 (sixteen years ago)

I don't invert mouse left & right, just for consoles when the camera is separate from the character.

Automatic thread bump. This poll is closing tomorrow.

System, Wednesday, 14 January 2009 00:01 (sixteen years ago)

Normal for me, but I admire Autumn's inverted thoroughness.

my point is if you're holding a camera, you twist to look left, you don't "go" in any direction (or alternatively, if the stick is supposed to be your character's head, you would twist it to look left, just as you would pull it backwards to look up). so it doesn't make sense to me to say that inverting is the only way to look up or down, when you clearly don't do the same thing with left and right. it's inconsistent.

throwbookatface (skygreenleopard), Wednesday, 14 January 2009 16:32 (sixteen years ago)

Also, there's too much talk about "imagining yourself behind yourself" and weird imaginary perspectives that's inhibiting both sides. You're adding a third perspective that isn't needed - rather, it's that you, the player (your actual self) are behind the TV/imaginary soldier, and you're controlling them from behind. This could lend credence to either side - either pointing which way you want the camera in front of you to face, or pulling back to look up, or whatever. I just wanted to clarify. Cuz if we're gonna fight this thing out, we've gotta set some ground rules.

throwbookatface (skygreenleopard), Wednesday, 14 January 2009 17:06 (sixteen years ago)

If we're gonna fight this thing out, we do it in deathmatch and we'll see how "normals" fare.

x-post

Webber still has it right. Unless you somehow still rely on flight sims on your Tandy from 1990 as your formative experience and translate that to FPSs where you play a soldier, the "pulling back" on a camera argument makes no sense unless you're talking about those studio cameras with a handle behind it.
http://i.ehow.com/images/GlobalPhoto/Articles/2100736/cameraman-main_Full.jpg
If you're somehow imagining yourself as a soldier behind one of these things with an M-16 duct taped to the side of the camera, if you're pulling down on the handle, your camera will look up. Yes, that could be natural. But there's an enemy soldier up on a balcony, above you and to the left. Where do you move the handle? DOWN AND RIGHT. If you insist that "pulling back and left" is natural, you're going to end up looking up and to the right, not to the left. An admirable, truly inverted man like Autumn would pull back and right on his PS3 joystick and shoot the soldier. But if you're one of the other goons playing with inverted vertical settings and insisting that you're "pointing" the camera by pushing the nose up and pulling the back down, you're still just being normal by thinking "let's look left - so I'll press LEFT on the stick."

When it comes to logical consistency, only the Normals (and crazies like Autumn) have it right.
