Starcraft 2: Mothership Connection

Announced last night at some sort of Korean gaming convention.

Boring announcement video and screenshots...

I was hoping it would be a bit more 3D, as it is, it looks like the old one but with nicer graphics.

Holy shit, the linking code works now! far out.

looks neat

funny farm, Saturday, 19 May 2007 19:31 (eighteen years ago)

one year passes...

Yesterday they announced a Beta opt-in (kind of). To be eligible you have to have a battle.net account and Blizzard 'may contact you in the coming months.'

calstars, Friday, 8 May 2009 02:22 (sixteen years ago)

A friend works for Blizzard and was saying last night it's still in the Alpha for a couple of months yet, but says its looking good, though it seems system requirements are pretty high...

CraigG, Friday, 8 May 2009 11:44 (sixteen years ago)

jesus how long is it going to take them to get this shit together. not only has it been like 10 years since the last one but everything about 2 looks like it's pretty much exactly the same with a couple new units and hi-resier graphics.

s1ocki, Friday, 8 May 2009 13:03 (sixteen years ago)

Yeah, you could say the same about SFIV, though, which also took for-fuckin-ever.

Leif. (Z S), Friday, 8 May 2009 15:57 (sixteen years ago)

Blizzard's as bad as anyone in using the "when it's done" excuse, but they haven't released a bomb in probably 15 years so it'll probably be very good. I'm on the fence about the game myself, but I'm one of those crazy people who enjoys the game in single player more than in multiplayer mode (DoTA and other such mods aside).

Nhex, Friday, 8 May 2009 19:16 (sixteen years ago)

I think it's really in their best interests to make sure this works perfectly; starcraft is STILL a massive sensation in most of the world and there's no reason to fuck with perfection.

I’ve seen a lot in my days as an mp3 blogger (forksclovetofu), Friday, 8 May 2009 21:24 (sixteen years ago)

Basically, the only other developer whose games consistently pleased me as much as Blizzard's do was Black Isle. (Even Capcom has bombed for me; see my total lack of interest in the Resident Evil series.)

admiral tub-a-lub (HI DERE), Friday, 8 May 2009 21:30 (sixteen years ago)

Valve, maybe.

Having just witnessed the pre-Beta in action I can confirm that it looks and plays pretty much exactly the same, but a bit more 3D-er (and sharper, or course). Apparently they haven't finalised all the races yet, and to my ears it sounds like they're using the same awful sound effects/voices from the last one. So it looks kinda nice, but sounds hella annoying. Maybe they're just placeholder sounds for now...

CraigG, Wednesday, 13 May 2009 19:53 (sixteen years ago)

three months pass...

Anyone else going nuts every time they push back StarCraft 2? I'm iffy on this whole "one race per product" thing for single player, but the mode to train for multiplayer sounds interesting. Mainly I just want them to release a multiplayer beta, with the fringe chance that it'll get hacked and distributed widely if I'm not in the beta group.

mh, Monday, 24 August 2009 19:28 (sixteen years ago)

Im trying to pretend Im not going to pick this up on day 1 but I probably will. I kinda hate RTS games these days but Blizzard does such a good job with them w/r/t the stories and the characters.

forksclovetofu, Saturday, 24 April 2010 02:51 (fifteen years ago)

odd timing. I just bought the original game for $5 at a used shop earlier tonight.

WTF cat with unfitting music (kingfish), Saturday, 24 April 2010 09:14 (fifteen years ago)

It is enjoyable. People who have played the original will have an initial advantage in that the resource and production system is the same. However about half of the units are new which makes things a bit confusing at the onset.

The Terrans have 4 ground units as opposed to 3 in the original - marines, ghosts, and two units that are kinda like firebats. And unfortunately the goliath is gone - replaced by HUGE ground units called Thors (which require as much tech upgrading as the Battlecruisers did in the original, so you won't be able to create them for awhile).

calstars, Saturday, 24 April 2010 13:06 (fifteen years ago)

can i still switch my modes on the tanks to awesome stationary cannon unit?

bracken free ditch (Ste), Saturday, 24 April 2010 21:03 (fifteen years ago)

Yes

calstars, Sunday, 25 April 2010 01:35 (fifteen years ago)

Also if you have the capability, the graphics are nice (there is an 'ultra' setting I'd like to see someday). I'm playing on a 3 year old laptop withal 128 meg video card and on LQ it looks good and is quite smooth.

It looks awesome. I hope it runs on my 2 year old iMac.

The original starcraft caused me to flunk out of college the first time. I would play that shit for 20 hours a day.

so is it the processor..?

oh, my processor is only 2.0 GHz.

kclu, Thursday, 6 May 2010 19:33 (fifteen years ago)

This beta test is pretty awesome. It's a lot like the original SC, but I feel like the races are a little more differentiated and have a definite flavor. The existing units and abilities kind of got shifted around so it's a very different game in that the strategies are different, but the gameplay is nearly identical to the original.

I played against a friend of mine who's korean american and he was almost as fast. tbh I don't think it's difficult to achieve that level, you just need to be willing to put in the time to slog through all those practice sessions. it's not really any different from being really good at touch typing or any other kind of twitch gaming.

You’re going off of her word that the farmer’s wife is the farmer’s wife? (dyao), Tuesday, 27 July 2010 15:22 (fifteen years ago)

Starcraft II being a 3logy is old news y'all! The full game is shipping multi-wise though, I think the later installments are going to be just single-player with additions to multi kind of like expansion packs. Except that they're gonna charge full price for each and make them standalone. Blizzard's not used to not making a trillion dollars on every release, see.

the girl from spirea x (f. hazel), Friday, 30 July 2010 07:55 (fifteen years ago)

i feel the exact opposite about the single player, i feel like they missed so much fo what has made SP storytellnig better in games over the past... how long ago did HL2 come out? 10 years?

seriously, why is everything in a goddamn cutscene? the in-between levels shit feels almost liek sam and max in its "i guess i am doing sometihng, because i click a thing and then i listen for 45 seconds" nonsense (minus the sam and max jokes-ness of it all). TALK TO ME WHILE I'M PLAYING. it's not insanely hard. to be fair i'm 3 missions in but i have decided i don't give an eff about the cutscenes already, and i am kind of not that dude usually. now i'm pissed that i am missing all of the (enthralling, i'm sure) story.

calstars, Saturday, 31 July 2010 21:56 (fifteen years ago)

Um. Wow. Not a multiplayer guy, at least for RTSs, but the single-player in this is great fun. The writing is pretty weak, but the production values are outstanding- you can really see where the gajillion dollars of Warcraft money went.

the dialog and voice acting in this game cracks me up and makes me all warm and fuzzy about childhood gaming memories. so cheesy! "a couple of badasses like you and me ain't cut out for a normal life" and "friends don't let friends massacre civilians" are just classic video game fun. it just wouldn't be right for it to be well-written.

lol the kerrigan. was gonna type 'the queen of blades' but decided it was too dorky but kept the article :/

dyao, Tuesday, 3 August 2010 13:01 (fifteen years ago)

Oh thank god, the worst character is dead. Now if only the awful, awful science officer would be next. Everything about him offends me on some deep, primal level- not just the writing and voice actor, but the grotesque character model with his giant piano-key teeth and the little bit of toilet paper stuck over a shaving cut (ew, Blizzard. Just EW).

As of halfway through the campaign, I'm loving the RPG-like elements (persistent research and upgrades, unique units, mercenaries, etc), and while I'm still terrible, it's different enough from proper Starcraft that I'm able to actually enjoy it.

Does anyone know if you can start a new SP campaign on an existing battle.net profile, or if you're stuck replaying missions from the Mission Archive? For my Normal playthrough (yes, I'm on Casual, I suck that badly) I'd like to try some of the other research options, plot branches, etc, and it would be a shame if my profile (which I plan to take online eventually) is locked to one SP playthrough with no reset button.

a black white asian pine ghost who is fake (Telephone thing), Tuesday, 3 August 2010 15:34 (fifteen years ago)

Another question for SP people- what research paths are you taking, both on the Spectre/Ghost decision and the Protoss and Zerg tech trees? There are a couple of choices on the Zerg tree that are so useful they seem almost mandatory. Perdition Turrets (for the zombie mission in particular- it's either these or raising/lowering supply depots to make a gate, and I don't like the idea of suddenly losing population cap if they get destroyed) and the dropship (Hellions, iirc- no idea how I would have done the Protoss mothership mission without them). I forget what the other choice for Perdition Turrets slot was (more bunker armor, maybe?), but the alternative to Hellions seems both bizarre and borderline useless- this weird robot cat thing with an AoE stomp against light infantry. It seems like it's an extra unit that just doubles up on what Firebats (AoE vs light armor) and Marauders (slowing effect) can do, except it has to get into melee to do it. Unless they're crazy fucking cheap, I don't het the appeal...

a black white asian pine ghost who is fake (Telephone thing), Wednesday, 4 August 2010 17:06 (fifteen years ago)

I havent played much of SP but had a bitch of a time deciding on whether to upgrade bunker armor or get a free gun on top. Went with the armor increase because a marine dont cost much to throw in there and I figured the gun you get with the upgrade probably sucks.

Like what the tree adds to the game. Good work blizzard.

mayor jingleberries, Wednesday, 4 August 2010 18:22 (fifteen years ago)

Unfortunately I can't really play this on my computer. Too many hiccups. Hope they figure a way to console it.

8o---e*.\\\||///.*ə---o8 (forksclovetofu), Wednesday, 4 August 2010 18:37 (fifteen years ago)

Xpost That sounds about right- maybe the other option was some kind of upgraded missile turret?

I went with the bunker gun. It's surprisingly powerful against light infantry and let's you free up Marines for more proactive manshoot duty.

a black white asian pine ghost who is fake (Telephone thing), Wednesday, 4 August 2010 21:35 (fifteen years ago)

ryan, Thursday, 18 November 2010 00:12 (fourteen years ago)

hahah I went through a few days of watching nothing but high level replays on youtube

_| ̄|○| ̄|○| ̄|○ (dayo), Thursday, 18 November 2010 00:19 (fourteen years ago)

i know! they can be really entertaining, some of the casters are really good, too. best one's i know of are day9, who casted the recent MLG tourney in Dallas, and then Husky and HD who have youtube channels. day9 is the most prolific and does really great instructional casts, he seems to be able to articulate how to play the game better than anyone else i've seen.

karl...arlk...rlka...lkar..., Thursday, 18 November 2010 00:59 (fourteen years ago)

i used to get too stressed out playing 1v1, but if you just get used to losing and just try to get the basics down you get over that. i also think sticking to one race to get the basics down is key.

karl...arlk...rlka...lkar..., Thursday, 18 November 2010 01:01 (fourteen years ago)

I cannot stand husky and HD! tried watching a Day9 vid but mostly he just talks about build orders? haven't seen any livecasting yet.

I would so get this game but remembering my SC days I know I would just spend all my time memorizing build orders. :(

_| ̄|○| ̄|○| ̄|○ (dayo), Thursday, 18 November 2010 01:02 (fourteen years ago)

they are definitely all dorks, so you have to get over that. but day9 is actually not at all focused on specific build orders, he talks about strategy a lot, though. memorizing build orders isn't as important as just understanding the basic technique of how to be time/resource efficient. he doesn't seem to do just normal casts of replays that much, but when he casted the MLG Dallas tournament it was live and it was really fun to watch.

karl...arlk...rlka...lkar..., Thursday, 18 November 2010 01:06 (fourteen years ago)

I'm back...can't stay away.

Day9 is my favorite caster. You can watch and d/l archives here: http://day9tv.blip.tv/posts?view=archive&nsfw=dc

Recently been going 3-4 rax with stim, combat shields, concussive shells, single factory and port. Seems pretty effective. Ebay for quick upgrades and to enable PF on expansions.

calstars, Thursday, 18 November 2010 03:36 (fourteen years ago)

Uh, is it just me or does this day9 guy spend 2/3 of his video talking into the camera instead of showing gameplay? Maybe I just picked the wrong videos?

mh, Thursday, 18 November 2010 05:08 (fourteen years ago)

most of his videos are set up like a lecturer talking to you about how to play SC2, so yeah, a lot of it is just his face while he talks to you. from what i've seen at least half of it is him talking over gameplay, though.

karl...arlk...rlka...lkar..., Thursday, 18 November 2010 05:30 (fourteen years ago)

As expressive as he is, and as great as his points are, his camera presence does not convince me that this technique is one he has mastered.

It's a pro sport in uh, korea, y'know. I'm kind of amused by how much this stuff resembles sports call-in shows and fan analysis.

mh, Thursday, 18 November 2010 15:23 (fourteen years ago)

have the koreans taken to this one as much as they did with the original?

F-Unit (Ste), Thursday, 18 November 2010 16:06 (fourteen years ago)

I think they're still doing Brood War tournaments constantly, but yeah, the adoption rate is definitely fairly high.

mh, Thursday, 18 November 2010 16:20 (fourteen years ago)

man I am glad I didn't get this game, I don't need to renew yet another addiction to a Blizzard franchise

ali-baba-boob-job-bomb.jpg (DJP), Thursday, 18 November 2010 16:41 (fourteen years ago)

HD really annoys me because of the constant malapropisms and whatever it is you call it when people mix up two different cliches.

Husky is kinda endearing in a nerdy way, but that mute button is handy too.

ryan, Thursday, 18 November 2010 17:08 (fourteen years ago)

yeah, that is kind of annoying, i find it pretty easy to forgive, though. i don't really know of any other good casters. there are two guys that cast Korean tournaments that are okay, Artosis and Tasteless, one of them is Day9's brother iirc.

karl...arlk...rlka...lkar..., Thursday, 18 November 2010 17:19 (fourteen years ago)

I read a thing about the pro circuit in Korea not taking to SC2 because theyre fighting tooth and nail with Blizzard over rights issues and whatnot. So everything thats televised is still sc1.

strongly recommend. unless you're a bitch (mayor jingleberries), Thursday, 18 November 2010 17:26 (fourteen years ago)

They're also having issues where Blizzard is trying to shut down some of those broadcasts since they're unlicensed. It's kind of a clusterfuck.

cool article. i saw the Boxer vs Rain match he talks about...it was well over an hour long i think.

ryan, Tuesday, 30 August 2011 15:26 (fourteen years ago)

anyone else still playing this? i've worked my way up from bronze to diamond and i play teams pretty regularly with friends while on skype, fun times. its easily the most difficult and gratifying game i've ever played--referring to multiplayer, btw, i never played the campaign.

karl...arlk...rlka...lkar..., Tuesday, 30 August 2011 15:34 (fourteen years ago)

i saw that Boxer-Rain match, too, pretty crazy

karl...arlk...rlka...lkar..., Tuesday, 30 August 2011 15:35 (fourteen years ago)

diamond, wow! i am barely hanging on in Gold, but i just started again after about a 9 month break. keep losing because i get over confident and just wanna walk my army into their front door.

ryan, Tuesday, 30 August 2011 15:36 (fourteen years ago)

i think one reason i enjoy the pro matches is because im just in awe at the tactics and control, but as i improve myself i notice that you have to be aware of like 100 different things at once. if my opponent just harasses me a little i get all out of sorts and forget to do all kinds of things. and on lower level games you can pretty much dictate how your opponent plays through psychological means, make them over-commit to defense, etc.

ryan, Tuesday, 30 August 2011 15:40 (fourteen years ago)

I have played only a handful of actual ranked matches here and there and tend to play FFA for random fun when I have free time. Yet, somehow, battle.net thinks I should be in 1v1 platinum? 4v4 I get since it's less-trafficked and I am decent at coordinating when I have a team to watch my back. I think if I play a few more times it'll bump me down to a more sensible league.

unwarranted display names of ilx (mh), Tuesday, 30 August 2011 15:41 (fourteen years ago)

im overmatched at Gold i think, so it's only a matter of time. frankly it would be a relief!

i've been watch the MLG events, but just now discovered gomtv so it'll be fun to see more GSL.

ryan, Tuesday, 30 August 2011 15:42 (fourteen years ago)

ryan otm.

I think the main thing I've noticed is that there are parts of the game that are very race-specific that you have to get good at to compete with anyone who knows their shit. I play protoss mostly, and the game changes incredibly if you can do sentry force field micromanagement.

unwarranted display names of ilx (mh), Tuesday, 30 August 2011 15:43 (fourteen years ago)

the less you play the less accurate your ranking is, so if you play more it should start matching you up against people at a similar level to you pretty quickly.

up to around gold-plat, the number one thing to pay attention to is your macro (i.e. worker production, not getting supply blocked, spending your resources constantly), the second most important thing is to keep your eye on the mini-map so you don't miss important stuff or get caught out of position, then third is scouting and engaging correctly.

ryan, i used to have the same problem (keep losing because i get over confident and just wanna walk my army into their front door,) but if you start constantly poking at them and scouting them to keep tabs on what their army is looking like and where its positioned you'll be able to find more effective times/places to engage. it took me a long time to stop underestimating everyone i played against, the general level of skill in sc2 is pretty amazing.

karl...arlk...rlka...lkar..., Tuesday, 30 August 2011 16:29 (fourteen years ago)

yeah another big problem is macro--i get tons of money but dont build enough production. and not the best at scouting yet...i can either do that OR macro, but not both at the same time yet. im basically trying to add one skill at a time.

I really hope Boxer pulls out a tournament victory in the near future.

ryan, Tuesday, 30 August 2011 16:59 (fourteen years ago)

ah, i'm always rooting for the foreigners myself, really wanna see IdrA or Naniwa take down another MLG. i doubt it'll happen this year, though.

karl...arlk...rlka...lkar..., Tuesday, 30 August 2011 18:37 (fourteen years ago)

as far as Koreans its all about NesTea and DRG for me

karl...arlk...rlka...lkar..., Tuesday, 30 August 2011 18:39 (fourteen years ago)

DRG is a Zerg right?

People complain about that slow asphyxiation/war of attrition style of Terran but I find it kind of mesmerizing.

I find Boxer to be an entertaining player but also I think it'd be fun for the celebrity old timer to pull one out.

It's amazing how fast these guy's stars can rise and fall--seems like a stressful way to make a living.

ryan, Tuesday, 30 August 2011 19:00 (fourteen years ago)

I mean I don't know if you can call the way someone plays a video game "charismatic" but that's how I feel about boxer.

Watching one of these tournaments all weekend like it's football is a great way to spend a summer weekend though.

ryan, Tuesday, 30 August 2011 19:04 (fourteen years ago)

Oh yeah, I definitely find certain play-styles very charismatic. That is certainly true of Boxer, he comes up with really unique builds and maximizes the value of his units. Players like MVP and Thorzain take that asphyxiation style Terran to the extreme. Thorzain is Swedish, but he recently went to Korea to compete in GSL and the Koreans call him the "spoon" Terran because his style is so slow and meticulous they say its like he's killing his opponent with a spoon, haha.

Yeah, DRG is a Korean Zerg, so is NesTea. I love DRG for his aggressive counter-attacking style, and I love NesTea for his defensive play and unbelievably perfect decision-making. NesTea's ZvZ is so good that he has over 90% win-rate in ZvZ in the GSL, and ZvZ is considered one of the most unpredictable, volatile match-ups--no one else even comes close to that kind of consistency in any match up.

Anyone else kinda more into watching than playing these days? Feel like I've reached a plateau and am just grinding out the same strata over and over ... And losing still really hurts.

calstars, Friday, 21 October 2011 18:34 (thirteen years ago)

Watching makes me want to play but then I do and it doesn't look like Boxer vs Idra, haha. I am trying to force myself to do things I'm not good at, losing more than normal, and hopefully better in the long run.

That idea v bomber was great too. Almost feel bad for Idra running the gauntlet of Boxer's early pressure and Bomber's macro-Terran style to just lose to what seemed to be pretty standard Protoss play from MC. I'm actually really excited to see the next MLG next month.

After reading a ton load of articles for the past month, and having a sick curiosity about this, I'm thinking that this weekend will be the one to try it out.

I only see a few tiny problems.

1) I'm not that into battlefield tactics games.

2) The last point & click game I really enjoyed was Syndicate on the Amiga.

3) I have two young kids and no free time whatsoever.

4) I've lost my mouse.

5) I don't play space marine games.

This can't be a bad idea can it?

karl...arlk...rlka...lkar..., Friday, 15 March 2013 02:55 (twelve years ago)

So I've played this a fair bit over the weekend, kinda dig it.

its way more traditional than I thought it would be, but that i think must be the thing that keeps people hooked. I suppose when half of South Korea is lining up to f**k your golden cow, you dont change the cow...

The campaign seems to be just a massive tutorial to avoid you getting schooled in multiplayer, much like a fighting game.

the one thing I really like about it is that you can play for 20/30 mins and win/lose and be done, seeing as the only games I've played in the last year are Skyrim/Arkham city. The idea of a game that actually has a defined end appeals a lot.

There is a weird disconnect about how much it seems to be troubling my Macbook Air and how simple the graphics are, but I've literally not played a game on a Macintosh since the millenium, so who knows...

most places had it for £17 which is a price I'm cool with, but now it seems to have gone up everywhere to £26. So I'm on the fence...

Would the multiplayer be useful at all? or will everyone be on HOTS now with only me and some super l33t players still playing wings of Liberty?

my opinionation (Hamildan), Sunday, 17 March 2013 15:27 (twelve years ago)

HOTS is overpriced. I'll be sticking with WoL until it comes down.
