the difficulty curve on this is beautiful. easy is just put the hammer down and learn to balance; medium is finesse, letting go of the throttle from time to time, and learning the tracks; and hard is pure technique.

Trials HD is definitely the new king of "just one more" gameplay, thanks to the leaderboards (and having friends actually playing it, unlike on PC), plus instant restarts and the generous checkpoint system. I just beat the 3rd hard level in 8+ minutes and 95 restarts, then watched the #1 replay just roll through it with no faults in 39 seconds = mind blown.

Any advice on the hill climb mini game? For whatever reason I can't even get the bronze 50 meters...

Defnitely enjoy the easier tracks, where it's much more about speed and balance and crazy jumps, but there's a certain thrill to struggling through the more difficult stuff too.

you know i have had a copy of trials 2 in steam for basically forever (cheap indie games pack) and have yet to play it

on hard 2 I can do it faultless right up till the part where you have to hit the springy boards that force you back on yourself then I just crap out :(

Thomp, Trials 2 is pretty great too (especially after all the updates they pumped out). It's definitely worth playing, but it's harder and more frustrating than the new version, basically (I think) because the physics engine is a little more unforgiving. I.e., it's much easier to crash or kill your guy. I actually played both back to back last night and it was pretty obvious how the xbox version is more bouncy and forgiving, which is probably a good thing. The xbox version also has better friend integration (naturally), which makes the just one more go feeling more pronounced. I feel like even the easy tacks are trickier in the PC version, while on 360 they're built more for speed and crazy jumps and end up being much more fun because of it.

Jeff, what I do on the hill is climb about ten meters up and lean forward, then bounce down the hill until I'm about two meters up and my rear wheel has stabilized and I'm popped in a standing wheelie. Then I lower forward at the same time I'm HALFWAY accelerating. When both wheels are on the ground, it will straighten out into a flat to the ground diagonal. If you do it right, you get a good steady push and the bike just guts its way up. The problem i had was when I hit the gaps initially. Once you get to the gaps, you have to accelerate slightly and start correcting the front wheel deviation.

And yes, this is basically superawesome excitebike.

Did beat my first EXTREME track today though - got to the last little bit in 15 or so minutes with only 200 or so faults, but then almost didn't make it to the end as I started to panic - a good 200 restarts for the last couple of inches, which was weird as a couple of the earlier parts seemed harder

Are you watching the videos of the high scores? Those are great for figuring out how to do particular parts of levels.

The first part of King of the Hill, I am pressing right as I slowly progress up the hill. Then about 1/3 of the way up I stop leaning right and quickly accelerate, with no lean, and that seems to usually get me airborne enough to grab hold of something at the top.

Thanks, I'll try your lean back technique. I definitely watched the videos of the top players doing that hill, but possibly because I'm mentally defective, the replays don't seem to help me. I can't seem to get my brain to put together the controls they are showing in the lower right corner, with the riders action in the middle of the screen. I can only perceive one set of data or the other and can't seem to put them together in a helpful way :(

Except it is slightly encouraging just to see certain things that seem impossible are not only possible, but easy (for some).

It's not like I can get it every time. Lots of restarts on that first part.

My technique - i think - is to go up the hill leaning forward, then sharp back before you hit the boxes at the top, then sharp forward. if the bike doesn't go forward after you take off then push back sooner, and if you make it up to the top but land on your nose, push forward sooner.

I just did the same part of Inferno II like 400 times in a row, without passing it. This game can be pretty damned cruel.

i just reread my advice up there and it's RONG. you should go sharp back, then forward, then back again, and if you land on your nose it's that second back that you need to do sooner.

The first box is flat, and then two sloping boxes, and then jumping off the third box into a huge chasm, where I guess you have to land/ricochet off this random thing in the middle of the chasm, but I never managed to do more than scrape it while falling to my doom, and only managed to get over the third box maybe four or five times out of 400.

I don't know why landing on that third box is so hard. The technique that eventually worked best for me was not to touch the stick at all on landing. You have to be at the right angle - parallel to the box or back wheel slightly lower - and ideally leaning forward already (but with the stick in neutral). Gun the engine briefly on landing and only push the stick forward when you're completely settled. If you can then do a controlled slip down to the bottom, you should be able to rocket up to the top and make the barrel easily.

Silver on all the expert tracks :P

Some of the tracks are amazing, especially the last medium difficulty one, GigaTrack - I couldn't believe how long that one goes on / it really surprised me!

Multiplayer seems to be a bit borked at the moment. The couple of races I managed to get into seemed like a fun addition though.

Just finished an Expert track where I had like 110 restarts and laughed out loud when they gave me a Silver.

I think the game has reached the point where it is more difficult than it is fun for me. It's still pretty though.

Haha. Almost pulled the trigger on the purchase, but the unskippable opening that forces you to listen to the seriously awful music held me back. Probably still get it at some point, but goddamn what a shitty way to sell yourself.

I was just playing this and failed like 170 times on this one section. I finally passed it and started pumping my fist like a mad man, whapping my elbow on the corner of my iPad. It hurt like hell, broke the skin, and will probably have a big bruise. Fuck.

Finally unlocked the extreme tracks, but I feel like that's my limit - not sure I have it in me to tackle those soul destroyers this time around.

Inferno 3 is so hard. I can't even get 2/5 of the way through it.

It's so frustrating because in my mind I know exactly how to get past this one part and it's a total echo from a tough part of Inferno 1, but no dice. Fail fail fail fail. And then my finger is bleeding and I'm like fuck this shit.

i remember one from the first game where it started with a double bunny hop onto a post the size of a mailbox. like at that point the sense of enjoyment kind of diminshes

I have had a lot of fun improving on the easy, medium and hard tracks. Even if I never spend the time to do the extreme tracks, I feel like the game is completely great and totally worth buying. I also still need to check out some community tracks, and maybe try to build one of my own.

the community tracks can be great, though a number are totally broken. the local multiplayer is excellent fun.

i love that you can sort of control your driver when he's laying on the ground after a crash (left trigger curls him into the fetal position, right trigger makes him flop around convulsively?). spent way too much time getting him to flop down the beach into the water after falling hundreds of feet. but it turns out he can do the backstroke, so totally worth it.

i mean it's not all that **hard** but my emotional capacity wrt dealing with intense frustration fizzles at like 2-3 minutes so most tracks are fine. that shit is sadistic.

it feels like a totally different game when you're cruising through a new set of tracks, crashing all the time and just trying to finish vs. trying to maintain zen focus and get silver/gold.

also it is annoying to see 'goole' doing better than me on every single track.

i got to that double-up wooden ramp in that rack after, swear to god, 20 mins and about 150 faults. i can't do 'simple' stuff like that; there are obv stock techniques for getting more height, more distance, etc, out of a given jump based on your lean as you exit and in midair but i just don't get it :/

Measuring yourself against the best guys in the game is a recipe for heartbreak.

I have done a couple of the extreme ones, don't think I'm going to do all of them. I find myself going through old tracks, spending ages getting gold and still getting stuck at second behind polyphonique every time.
