"JoggingWhen jogging with the ball FIFA10 will give you full 360 degree control, when requesting a turn you will get exactly the angle you input on the left stick. One note on this however is that for turns less than 22.5 degrees (22.5 degrees may sound like an odd limit but this is basically 360 / 16 ) you will not get a turn immediately. Instead he will make the small adjustment the next time he catches up to the ball. This is because we don't want your player to constantly be playing a turn animation as this will affect the fluidity of the dribble and also affect pass responsiveness as we do not allow you to pass while you are about to touch the ball in a dribble turn.
The effect of this is that FIFA10 feels more fluid and you can now beat defenders, protect the ball and ultimately make plays that you could not before.
Skilled DribblingLike jogging, skilled dribble is fully 360 degree though the real power of the feature is really in the sideways movement.
SprintingThe affect on sprinting is slightly different from jogging. The reason for this is that when sprinting your momentum dictates that you cannot adjust your body to perform the same turns that you can when jogging. In FIFA10 the range of turn that we allow when sprinting is ANY angle from 0 degrees to 22.5 degrees (plus 180), this is different from 09 as in that game we could only turn 0 or 22.5 left or 22.5 right.
Again, the reason we do not allow full 360 in sprinting is that it is just not physically possible to turn say 94 degrees and stay at sprint speed. Obviously if you did want to perform a 94 degree turn you could release the sprint button and the player would perform a 'Sprint to Jog' turn that would satisfy your pad angle request and turn 94 degrees or whatever angle you were requesting.
The result of this is that you can finely adjust your sprint direction in order to not lose so much momentum when turning and potentially get away from a defender without slowing down and getting tackled like you would in 09.
Hopefully I have explained that clearly, its difficult without diagrams"

To say that EA's forthcoming football game looks promising is a chronic understatement; it looks absolutely amazing. The best thing you could say about FIFA 10 is that It's a massive improvement on its predecessor. This accolade is thrown into even sharper relief when one considers that FIFA 09 was the game that established EA's dominance over Konami's Pro Evolution Soccer franchise. FIFA 09 was quite simply the best football game of last year, and the fact that it hardly holds a candle to FIFA 10 is mind-boggling.

FIFA looking a lot better as expected. can't see much of the return of the king in the PES video, to me it looks like nothing's improved on the animations since the first nextgen version. faces still looking better in PES though.

hey, i try both every year. i just want a decent footie game. i get irked by EA/FIFA having the games press in their pocket so i root for PES, but i will buy the better game. the response to FIFA09 just spun my head around because i played the shit out of that demo before PES09 came out and it seemed pretty horrendous to me. this PES is better than it has been for a few years but it has a few annoying gameplay tics and the menus are still utter dump so i would be delighted if EA put out a decent game.

the only fifa games I ever played prior to last year were fifa & fifa '95 on megadrive and road to the world cup on N64 and I'd never owned a fifa. conversely, I've probably owned (and at least played) every iteration of PES/ISS since iss & iss deluxe on the SNES (barring the japanese winning elevens). I think PES actually looks OK this year and might pick it up if I can get it cheap; I'd definitely go for the PS3 version though, don't think it controls well w/the 360 pad. I'm really excited about FIFA (well as excited as a grown man can get abt a videogame) cos of the new jostling and 360 control; though I'm not sure you'll like it if you didn't take to 09. it's a similar engine, from what I can tell, but refined. snow leopard, if u want; all accounts so far are that it's 100 times better than 09 tho, but that's standard for the yearly run-up to these games' release I kno

Any news on how long we have to wait until we find out if we have had our transfer bid accepted or do we still need to wait until after the next game?
MK - "The club and player you are negotiating with will still be taking a week to get back to you. That being said, we’ve removed the restriction of “Available bids”, so as long as your club and wage budget allows you to negotiate with additional players you will be free to do so. Also we’ve added a new feature where, after you successfully negotiated with a player, you don’t automatically sign him. You as the Manager still have to approve the transfer. This allows you to negotiate with multiple players on the same position and if they all accept your offer, you can individually accept or decline their transfer requests."

Nah, the last PES or two that I played I had keepers sent off for bringing strikers down while being rounded. It was a bit too easy to play for it with the shot feint, I think.
It would be good for the game to actually give you any reason to have a goalkeeper on the bench.

they've kinda done that, I took the ball with henry and tried to accelerate past a defender too quickly in a sharp turn and the ball just rolled out from under his feet behind him, it felt pretty natural and showed the advantage of physics based gameplay over scripted/animation-based well

That sounds good, the game could do with a bit of a random element. I don't think the ball's ever deflected into the net in the time I've spent playing FIFA 09. Except from the goalkeeper dropkick exploit.
― Eugene Sander-Rygar (MPx4A), Thursday, 10 September 2009 13:38 (sixteen years ago)
Demo isn't out in the US for another week :( (and the game itself isn't out till October 20th, in the US or Japan)
Zappi - last year's FIFA for PC actually implemented a control scheme very similar to what you get on the Wii with PES (there's a demo to try out floating around). I don't think FIFA on Wii is supposed to be horrible - in fact I think last year they added in those Wii PES controls too. I think they games may be pretty close on Wii(?), but PES definitely got the jump & FIFA has been ignored. Last year's Wii PES also put back in the classic control scheme, so you had the option. I've yet to hear anything about this year's Wii games... possible people don't like the new Wii controls because they make the game harder to pick up and play?
― Jeff LeVine, Thursday, 10 September 2009 14:10 (sixteen years ago)
Does the demo include online play?
― Jeff LeVine, Thursday, 10 September 2009 14:12 (sixteen years ago)
Yeah, I heard the first PES on Wii wasn't all that, but that last year's was apparently great. I only got the Wii in April and am mostly broke so it's not been a priority, also I mostly want Beatles band atm. What's a casual gamer exactly? ;) Might get PES09 if it's cheap somewhere, or wait.
But no-one mentions FIFA on the Wii, but on everything else it beats PES atm?

http://www.epltalk.com/scooreys-fifa-10-gameplay-impressions/10921FIFA 10 Gameplay Impressionsby scoorey on September 10, 2009 · 4 comments
Australia’s 5 time FIWC champion, Stephen Coorey, was lucky enough to play the latest Fifa 10 build at EA headquarters today. Here are his impressions of the new game…
Today was the day I have been waiting for since the FIWC final in Barcelona in May – my first look at Fifa 10. I’d read about all the new features and improvements, but you never really know until you try it out yourself. A note before I start – the build I played today is 3 builds newer than the demo which hits the Xbox Live Marketplace and PS3 Store tonight, and I was told there are a lot of improvements in it, compared to the demo which has a few keeper bugs in there still.
Ok, let’s get straight into some heavily hyped new features…are they as good as the reviewers say?
360 dribbing
First game I chose Arsenal and kicked off, passed back to Fabregas and started moving. What followed immediately was the first of many OMG’s. Personally, before today, I was skeptical about 360 dribbing, as far as I could tell in Fifa 09, I could move in any direction I wanted to, not just 8 ways. The first few steps Fabregas took blew that out of the water – he actually moved his body for every little amount of pressure I put on the left thumbstick, whatever angle I moved it. I know that is probably hard to picture, but the point is, even the most basic of movements makes this new feature evident – it affects every aspect of the game . No longer do you just push the left thumbstick left and run straight at goal, numerous times I thought I was doing that but found myself running at a 10 degree angle towards the corner flag because I wasnt angling it exactly enough. Then I thought to myself, “how can I use this to rape the defense?” and started dancing back and forth, trying to dribble through the whole opposing team. No good though, the defenders can move EXACTLY where they want too, and if you collide with an opposing player – you really collide. I gave away a lot more free kicks than usual, but they were realistic, because I was leaving my foot or shoulder in the tackle to hurt the attacker and stop his momentum. Watching my player raise his hand and admit to doing something dirty was highly amusing.
Quick Free Kicks
That reminds me, if you are given a free kick and are near the ball, your player will put his hand on the ball, while the action continues around him, and if you want, you can quickly get on with play and catch your opponent napping. I know this has been in PES for a while, but seeing it used in Fifa was a dream come true for someone that has always detested free kicks and wanting to get on with the game quickly without giving the ball away.
1 v 1 / Goalkeeping
I cant finish 1v1’s anymore. I played all the guys at EA who have been playing it for months, and they couldnt finish them either. The goalkeepers are now AWESOME. I tried casually walking up to the keeper and chipping as he dived at my feet – no good. I tried running diagonal across him and finessing it to the far corner – no good, he will save it or you will MISS (even with top players). I tried blasting it – no good (still miss). You really need to unlock the defense to such an extent that you have someone unmarked to pass to as you draw the keeper. If you are successful at chipping the keeper, and he gets a hand to it, with the ball bouncing in front of goal – the keeper will “accidently” take your striker out as you race towards the ball, leaving you both on the ground as the defense rushes back to clean up. This will make attacking teams angry, but after all, a scramble is a scramble.
Cross whoring
So if you’ve played me in Fifa09, you know that I perfected a really dirty cross to the back post which 7 times out of 10 would result in a goal. Of course this was going to be one of the first things I tried on Fifa 10 – the SCOOREY cross. It didnt work. Not only did it not work, the keeper caught it – similar to the anti-corner glitch that became popular in the last few months of Fifa09 where the keeper would catch the corners if people tried to go back post. This time, the defender doesnt need to do anything - the keeper just catches it by himself if you try the glitch. Well done EA on that one. So I tried out a few other crosses. Normal crosses look way cool on Fifa 10. You can make them swerve and dip with the left thumbstick, and the strikers make intelligent runs to both posts much more often than in 09 when I had to practically force them. Heading is a little more difficult, but I did score a few nice ones, and alternatively you can chest it down and then go BANG, but this takes some luck as usually you will be challenged by a defender while trying this.
Chip Through ball
This was the most widely abused glitch on Fifa 09, run to the defense, and time a little chip through ball over the top, letting go when your striker was level with them, and watch the defense stop and look up like stunned mullets while CRonaldo or Rooney powers through on goal. All the talk was that this was no longer possible, but I was still able to do it the same way. The difference now is though, when you are past the defense it takes time and skill to control the ball, and while you are controlling it, the defense comes back or the keeper rushes up and there is nothing you can do before he smothers you. The defenders no longer stand still watching the ball, so it is a genuine contest, but if the striker is faster/stronger, he will still get to the ball first. What happens after that though is much more random.
Tackle from behind
As mentioned earlier, there are a lot of unexpected fouls, as the collision detection is much more realistic. You can no longer body check someone who is running full speed at your goal and expect to get away with it. Your player will put his hand up and admit the foul and cop a yellow card – even if you didnt press slide tackle. But just when I thought my defenders were being picked on, I lost the ball a couple of times and pressed tackle (slide or normal) straight away to see my player move his legs AROUND OR THROUGH the opponent, not touching him, but just the ball and winning it back straight away. I know it has been claimed for 2 years now that the ball was no longer attached to the person in possession, but this is the first time I’ve really believed it. You can make a play at the ball from anywhere and if you hit it cleanly, the ball bounces out of the attacker’s possession and where it goes is anyone’s business from then onwards!
Long Range Cracks
The return of long range cracks aye? I think after the long range finesse shot glitches of 07 and 08, people were happy when 09 made it almost impossible to score from outside of the box (regularly). Who better to try out this new feature than Stevie Gerrard. I picked up the ball around 40 yards out on the right side of the field, cut in and BLASTED…no finesse, just blast, and into the top corner it sailed, diagonally past the outstretched arm of the diving keeper. Long range cracks are back baby!
Little things
Imagine the ball bouncing between two players, one on each team. Neither player has possession. On Fifa09, they would run into each other, chest to chest, and whichever player was stronger would magically come out of the contest with the ball, with the other guy left behind like a piece of trash. Now imagine the ball bouncing and the defender thowing himself at the ball with a karate kick because it is too high for a normal kick, but too low for a header. THAT IS WHAT HAPPENS IN FIFA 10. The animations are amazing. There are so many new ones. Your player wont go to the ball in 09? In 10 he slides at the ball to clear it desperately, or slides at it to knock a pass on to someone else.
Through balls look real! It is not just hit and hope, it calculates the correct angle and puts the player who makes the intelligent run in behind the defense and ready to play the assist. Unlocking defenses is now not just a challenge, but it makes you say out loud ‘good ball’ because it is exactly what you envisaged (and sometimes surprisingly better).
There are lots of little things like this which you only notice after playing a few games – and I am sure there are many that I missed in my 3 or so hours that I was playing everyone in the EA office (Thanks EA for letting me stay longer than the original hour that was planned :) ) Anyway, as you can probably tell, just like everyone else who has played this masterpiece, I cant go back to playing Fifa09 anymore. So while I wait for the demo, here are all the player ratings that I can remember. (Note that these might not be final, it was just before the transfer window shut, Dunne was still in Man City, but Madrid had all their Galacticos).
BarcaMessi 90, Ibra 89, Titi 85, Iniesta 88, Xavi 87, Yaya 82, Puyol 88
RealCronaldo 87 (89 if move him to striker), Kaka 88 (striker by default), Benzema 86, L.Diarra 84, Xabi 83, Pepe 84, Ramos 84
Man UtdRooney 87, Berba 85, Vidic 88, Rio 87, Hargreaves not fast anymore
ChelseaDrogba 85, Anelka 85, Lampard 87, Ballack 85, Essien 85
ArsenalRVP 84, Eduardo 83, Arshavin 87, Fabregas 87, Nasri 82, Rosicky 83, Walcott 82
LiverpoolAquilani 83 (and very fast and skillful), Gerrard 88, Torres 88, Kuyt 84, Carragher 85
Man CityAdebayor 84, Robinho 83, Bellamy 80, Wright P 81, Ireland 78, Tevez 82, De Jong 77, Toure 87
InterEto’o 87, Milito 85, Cambiasso 86, Mancini 81, Queresma 83, Motta 85, Maicon 84, Lucio 85, Samuel 85, Zanetti 82

this just looks so stupidly simple but I'm not sure you could have willingly done this in 09; I don't have a problem w/iniesta making that pass or w/messi winning the eventual ball despite the defender being stronger, the angles look good to me
― cozwn, Thursday, 10 September 2009 15:35 (sixteen years ago)
kinda ridiculous. this is on world class, though it is against chicago fire.
― cozwn, Thursday, 10 September 2009 16:20 (sixteen years ago)
tried the demo, played two matches so far, and i'm certainly buying this. actually think this might live up to the hype.
love how smooth it all feels. 360 dribbling probably adds a lot to this (i suck at dribbling so can't really tell yet) but also just the flow in a match with very few cutscenes, the com team taking quick free kicks against you etc.
the fps seemed a bit so-so at times though?
― sonderangerbot, Thursday, 10 September 2009 16:30 (sixteen years ago)

― sonderangerbot, Thursday, 10 September 2009 16:36 (sixteen years ago)
This is the greatest video game ever.
I can understand the PES luddites not jumping ship last year because of FIFA 09 still being a bit treacly and unresponsive, but this is smooth as shit, it is manifest by the natural light.
― Eugene Sander-Rygar (MPx4A), Thursday, 10 September 2009 18:34 (sixteen years ago)
Minor niggles:
Been given a warning for an obvious yellow cardBeen yellow carded for an obvious red card (same weirdly prevalent scything two footed tackle animation from last year)5 minutes of first half stoppage timeTyler and Gray appearing to remark on every goal celebration and thumbstick skill, including just rolling the ball half a yard with yr fuckin studs
Good:Fluid as all hellTrajectory of shots is more varied, long range side footed curlers with good players are fuckin vicious as per czn's videoGenerally greater variety of outcomes in tackles and shitQuick free kicks nicked wholesale from PES

the replay function also sucks and i can't see any point with that pre-game warm up business.
― sonderangerbot, Thursday, 10 September 2009 18:51 (sixteen years ago)
Are the menus the same / insanely complicated mess as the last two years, or have they figured out something to make 'em a little more user friendly? Is there a way to turn off in game replays? Is there a way to turn off replays in 09?
― Jeff LeVine, Thursday, 10 September 2009 19:21 (sixteen years ago)
menus still ridiculous, and still laggy
framerate still appaling on replays and cutscenes
but yup it is the greatest videogame ever made
― cozwn, Thursday, 10 September 2009 21:07 (sixteen years ago)
I love how you don't even need to use either tackle button to win a ball too; you can just run into a player at the right momentum and angle and you'll take the ball like you would in real life
so good

This is not exciting but it does have a good run from full back and a good block that suggests the defenders take some interest in where the ball is.

"Audio Director Jeff MacPherson answers the call to the many who have been asking about new commentary in FIFA 10. Here’s his first blog going in-depth with what fans can expect in this year’s game.We know that in the past we’ve neglected to give Manager Mode the commentary depth it deserves. Quite frankly, we have been focused on the challenges of just getting a 90 minute match right! So, this year, for FIFA 10, we listened to the feedback and decided to devote a large portion of our commentary development time to supporting Manager Mode and Virtual Pro progression.
We designed over 150 new commentary “contexts” devoted to these modes with anywhere from two to twenty different phrases for each. There are lots of new types of team, player and manager banter talking about milestones, performance, stats and more. We’ve focused on intro and fulltime analysis that is relevant to where the player is in seasons and tournaments. When a player is in possession of the ball there are comments about his performance over the course of the match and over the course of the season. Different actions (i.e. tackles, misses, goals, etc.) are qualified using player traits and season/career statistics. There is feedback and hinting regarding the transfer window. There is feedback regarding manager job security and team budgets. Along with ensuring that there is enough coverage (breadth), we also aimed for depth - there are comments that you will not hear until well into a Manager Mode or Virtual pro career/progression.
Here are just a few examples of the types of commentary you can expect to hear as you progress through Manager Mode or use your Virtual Pro in FIFA10:- Midfield banter about your teams league standing, where you are in the league, how you’ve been playing and how your team stacks up against your opponent- Transfer window information like the window is opening; your team has made a transfer; the window is closing soon/closed; your team has the budget and should make a transfer before it is too late; etc.- References to a player who has rarely been booked this season getting a red/yellow card- All new fulltime analysis as it relates to cup and tournament progression; including reference to specific cups by name; multi-leg matches with aggregate scoring; etc.- More intro and fulltime comments relating to season progression, where you stand in the table; if it looks like you’re going to win the league or, indeed, if you’ve already won the league; early season indicators based on performance; etc.- Commentary is aware of and speaks about multi-game winning and losing streaks- Virtual Pro goal milestones including number of goals for your club this season and number of consecutive matches scoring- Comments based on stats as it relates to current action: i.e. if a player has scored many free kicks for your team this season this will be mentioned when he steps up to take a free kick; if you’re Virtual Pro has scored hat-tricks before for this club then it will be mentioned as he’s seeking out his third goal in a match; a strikers season performance is assessed for goals and misses (a high performing striker may get a hard time for missing while a low performing striker will cause surprise if he manages to score); passing percentage is taken into account as a player gives the ball up again or makes another successful pass; similarly, tackle percentage is taken into account when a player makes a successful tackle (or does not!)- Transfer information: a noteworthy new transfer will be mentioned in the intro; when the new player has the ball we may hear about how he is old or young, or how expensive he was to the club and how the commentators may feel he’ll gel with the new club- Player traits and play style are taken into account: i.e. players who are known for long-range shots will get more anticipation further away from goal and the commentators will be more lenient if he misses a long shot as he’s known to score from distance; mentions players with determination bringing up a team’s morale by still giving his all when they are down; players who score often from finesse shots are praised; a “playmaker” can be expected to play the ball to his teammates; players who tend to play out wide are referenced in that position; etc.- Saves and misses preventing major milestones are mentioned and the rivalry between a player and the keeper in these situations is played up- Player form is discussed- More focus on the team captain: the team may have a new captain; the form of the current captain and how it affects the team; goals scored by the captain; etc.- Many new introductions to season matches including: Virtual Pro debut; new transfers; players returning from injury/suspension; previous result against this opponent; winning and losing streaks; league table standings; how the team stacks up against their opponents; if a team is facing relegation or promotion; etc."

I keep playing on top level and not getting enough space to do the fancy shit, I'll probably need a few hours on the new training thing. Also, it gives you Lampard on the start screen so you don't get an easy way to practice the top level/new skills.
I did some combined stepover/Marseille roulette thing that went between two players in a way that would have been impossible on FIFA 09 though, so that's good.
The 360 control is kind of a doubled edged sword in that it seems to affect the direction of your passes in a way that can make you pick out a guy you didn't want if you're all sloppy about it, and it also makes your first touch ridiculously important because it's so easy to run it out of play or accidentally towards another defender instead of just in a brutal straight line towards goal. It feels properly like the biggest step forward in a decade just to run around with it in general though, there's none of that "this is the same game from last year" feeling outside of the presentation/cutscene aspects
― Eugene Sander-Rygar (MPx4A), Sunday, 13 September 2009 12:05 (sixteen years ago)

OTM. For the time being, this feels quite hard. You cannot get away with all the automatisms you acquired in previous editions

played the 10 demo for 9 or 10 games and this is definitely playable, so it's an instant improvement on 09. i think i could actually play this if i had to, although it would take a bit of getting used to. the players seem to glide on the surface and the ball still moves weird, which is a fifa hallmark, but once i got used to it i wouldn't notice. i guess the pes demo comes out next month? i am in no hurry, so i will to try that before i make any decisions, but it is good to know that fifa is at least back in consideration.

not kidding about the HDTV. i'm still playing on a standard 21", which is "okay" with most games if i sit close enough, but managing the squad and formations in FIFA is hella hard

I like that their screenshot demonstrating FIFA's newfound transfer realism has Chelsea with a budget of £64 million having already spent £22 million, and Teemu Tainio playing for Man City.
The rumours and confirmed deals lists are a good idea though, and the actual figures seem a bit more realistic.

i like the idea of a sweaty fifa fanboy locked in his room for hours with the pes demo trying to score a rubbish goal. the second one would obviously make the most reasonable man power off in rage, but the first and third aren't that bad at all, so if this is the worst the sweaty dude can come up with, it speaks in pes' favor
― aarrissi-a-roni, Thursday, 17 September 2009 13:20 (fifteen years ago)
dudes - FIFA 10 feels 99.5% the same as FIFA 09. Not worth a $60 US upgrade, imo. Still a great game though. Crosses felt slightly better (sharper & more variety)?

sorry tht was flip, this is how I think it's different:
- technical players are as good as the outright fast players now; so xavi can be as effective henry; pace is far less effective.- each goal is more important, if you score you can hold out much easier;- animation is more realistic, huge improvement in this regard; it just makes the game far better; animation is gameplay imo- through balls are far less effective.- you have to mix up your game more, passes with crosses, instead of pass, and then through ball before shooting and you have to look for players in space- ball travels quicker and at a lower trajectory when you cross or spray the ball the around- defenders make last ditch attempts at clearances, including some nice new animations- ball reacts more realistic in play, totally physics based gameplay- defending is much more tactical instead of pressing all over the place- they've including a 'jockeying' animation this time round, which makes it easier to discern when you're doing it and helps you figure out if you're doing it right- long distance shots are worth taking on more often; long distance passing is now viable- AI controlled players are better, they track opposition players very well, which just makes opening defenses more difficult and requires player creativity and more patient attacks- skilled dribble is fantastic
this is just from the demo, which is a few builds behind the current build, which will probably be a few builds again behind the retail game; full game has virtual pro, free kick editor etc
game controls feels so different to me, coming from playing tonnes of 09; the 360 dribble is subtle but fantastic and the player urgency is brilliant
― cozwn, Thursday, 17 September 2009 16:37 (fifteen years ago)
let me rephrase that then - as a more casual player, the games feel so similar I can't see myself spending $60 dollars for some play tweaks that could have easily been a patch. Still feel satisfied with FIFA 09 (still satisfied with Winning Eleven 8 / PES 4 tbh)
― Jeff LeVine, Thursday, 17 September 2009 17:36 (fifteen years ago)
360 dribbling closer to next level innovation really than a little play tweak you find in a patch. which brings me to PES, i guess they intend to include the 360 in the retail version because i found very little of it in the demo? felt pretty clunky and oddly paced compared to FIFA.
― sonderangerbot, Thursday, 17 September 2009 17:47 (fifteen years ago)
Last I heard Pro Evolution had more directions you could go in, but not 360 like FIFA.
some play tweaks that could have easily been a patch
noooooooooooooooooooooooooooo
― Eugene Sander-Rygar (MPx4A), Thursday, 17 September 2009 17:56 (fifteen years ago)
huh - why not? Look how much, for instance, Valve has patched Team Fortress 2...
― Jeff LeVine, Thursday, 17 September 2009 18:13 (fifteen years ago)
PES has 360 degree dribbling in the demo but it is so poorly implemented (ie the animations are rubbish) that you'd be forgiven for asking wha'happen
― cozwn, Thursday, 17 September 2009 19:42 (fifteen years ago)
- animation is more realistic, huge improvement in this regard; it just makes the game far better; animation is gameplay imo
this is engine stuff, jeff; it'd have to have been some patch. 360 degree dribbling is engine stuff too, I don't know much about game development but I'd be impressed if they could patch this kind of stuff in. it's taken them however many years to get to the point where they've even attempted to put it, that's how much 'effort' it's taken

"For the most part these refinements are minute, the sort of details that only serious players will understand, let alone become excited by. The AI’s understanding of trapping the ball has been improved, for instance. Now, rather than positioning themselves to control the ball as early as possible – which often results in unrealistic mid-air chest-downs – players will look for the easiest way to bring the ball under control, perhaps by taking a step backwards and waiting for it to drop to the floor. Through balls are now played into the space in front of runners rather than directly to their feet, and those runners can now make curved runs, bending along the offside line to spring defences or arcing between opposition players to collect an angled ball.
There are dozens of such tweaks, making the game more authentic, more complicated, more contextual. But perhaps the alteration that will make the biggest difference to how FIFA actually feels is the removal of the standard eight-directional player axis and the introduction of full 360-degree turning and movement. It’s the perfect illustration of Paterson’s drive to open up scripted and limited areas of FIFA’s engine with lifelike mechanisms offering a far greater number of gameplay variations. “I find it very satisfying,” Rutter says of the new system. “The fact that you couldn’t do that with a player like Cristiano Ronaldo just seemed pretty wrong… It’s one thing people saying, ‘We want more kits, boots and balls’, but when you can’t actually do something as simple as go: ‘There’s two players – I want to run between them…’”"

yeah i tried it again and could feel it, it's just that the the players oddly enough still prefer to move in the old, usual directions.

I just downloaded the PES demo then played both back to back & it's a real embarrassment for Konami. PES just feels really archaic and broken now compared to FIFA - there's really no comparison. It's a real testament to just how far the FIFA team has come and overall how much effort they've put into making a better game the last few years. It seems like Konami are trying some stuff with PES, but that none of it is working or mixing together smoothly? They need to stop tweaking and really start over from scratch, I think.
I did notice a couple other improvement with FIFA 10 that I didn't notice in my first game this morning. Most notably (for me) was getting the ball out of the air from a goal kick is no longer simply a matter of the guy in front always getting it, but there's more realistic jostling and a real chance for both players. Also, as I think Cozwn wrote above, the L2 jockeying seems improved and looks more natural.

^This for sure. I feel like all they do is develop a new engine (or port the old one) when a new generation of consoles comes out, then it's just minor tweaks (break something in one iteration, fix it next year) for 5, or 6, or however many years til there's a new generation. Fifa 10, much like the first PES on the Wii did, looks to be trying to break that mould, but I expect it'll end up how PES on the Wii did again; minor tweaks, another £40 game. But at least the changes in Fifa 10 look significant compared to 09.
I guess the same 'tweak' criticism is true of most games where sequel(s) appear in the same generation, but it's far less noticeable due to most games having much more of a narrative than sports titles do; new story & levels = new game.

If you pre-order this from shopto.net you get entered into a draw to win a Premier League season ticket. They don't actually have any, they just buy one for you, if there are any left at the club you want. Maybe some guy with Blackburn as a second team will get lucky, I'unno.

"The biggest thing we did this year is we stopped giving [the commentators] a script – they get no scripted lines from us. Everything you hear them say in the game comes straight from them. We create the scenario, give them a context and they look at the situation and play off each other, using their own words."

"MacPherson explains that this is made possible because the commentary now has separate AI which 'listens' to the all the information coming from the gameplay. It also checks the information coming from the tournament manager and other areas of the game. But rather than just responding with something, it assesses the information and it may decide not to say anything immediately, or it may pick out what it thinks is more relevant to the bigger picture. Rather than talking about a tackle or a pass, it may choose to talk about your team’s winning or losing streak as it pertains to the season or the competition at this particular point."
― cozwn, Saturday, 26 September 2009 22:41 (fifteen years ago)
seriously impressed w/all of this. stuff like this is brilliant
"In the past, you used to just hear a generic shout and it was a nice part of the atmosphere," says MacPherson. "Now, when a player’s running into space, he’ll call for the ball and you’ll hear it in the game – and you’ll hear it in the right language."

I wondered about the chants last year; licensing Go West is pretty dedicated, but getting Hey Jude just seems like a new level of more hassle than it's worth.
I hope the stuff in that article pans out as well as it could, because a lot of the commentary on the demo is still pretty cornball, especially when you end up dropping the controller to put your head in your hands because you realise they're having another Wembley Discussion.
― MPx4A, Sunday, 27 September 2009 13:32 (fifteen years ago)
ha, the demo commentary file is understandably tiny tho but yeah 7 years did you really believe it would happen I have a lot of fond memories as you know

Wasn't sure if "I hope I get to shout goal in it a few times" was some kind of chirpy injoke dig at the crap/inexplicable "I thought you were going to shout goal at the other end" line
― MPx4A, Sunday, 27 September 2009 14:36 (fifteen years ago)
I think the fundamental thing the commentary programmers miss is that people tend to play a few games in a row and where the commentary gets most annoying isn't in the variety of things said, but when you have to hear it say the same thing in exactly the same way time and time again across games. It would add so much if the could record basically the same descriptive lines that come up in almost every game, but differently, with different inflections or whatever - that's where you would get some much needed variety and a more human feeling.

A couple of the reviews linked on Metacritic say the commentary is actually good.
Remember when games used to do the "that's a great goal by <loading> CANTONA"? Surely we should be making progress in that area instead of all this "That's a great finish by the player in question" "Yes, the football team that he plays for will be very pleased with his performance today" stuff.
I know they have chat about big name players but I'm not convinced Rob Earnshaw and Jon Stead are gonna be getting specific enough love.

don't get it for the wii!!! get PES if u have a wii
this is crucial - if u own a ps2, PC or wii get PES; if u own a PS3/360 get FIFA
― cozwn, Wednesday, 30 September 2009 11:18 (fifteen years ago)
Oh ok!
I might just get last year's PES then, at least I won't have to move Alonso back.
(but why's it no good on the wii? Obviously it's not as powerful as PS3/360, but why do they even bother making games that aren't as good as they want them to be? Naive casual gamer asking big questions.)
― j.o.n.a, Wednesday, 30 September 2009 11:21 (fifteen years ago)
well actually I thought the wii version was still running the ps2 code (fifa on PC runs the PS2 game iirc and so did last year's wii version). the 360/PS3 versions have a full new physics-based engine... but reading around seems the wii version is difft. this time out so maybe I spoke too soon...
I'd maybe wait for a review or two of the wii version before deciding? I know for a fact tht PES2009 on the wii is great tho, and can probably be had for pennies now

Re: Ireland/Barry - Are the overalls an average of all the other stats? Cos a bunch of em probably aren't important depending on your position, could just be that Barry is high because of his versatility and insane penalty-taking chops, Ireland could still be more stacked in terms of likelihood of scoring goals and having a major impact on a game

― MPx4A, Wednesday, 30 September 2009 11:34 (fifteen years ago)
they really need to work on player individuality next yr
this post from the fsb forums is on point:
"I think nearly everyone here grew up on PES or around it, but today's PES fans seem to think we know nothing about it or that we're missing out on some incredible gaming experience by not sticking by the franchise through hell or high water. Fact of the matter is, I personally know A LOT about PES and what made it so popular.
I used to buy every magazine in the build up to PES3/4/5/6 (not including every ISS, yes, every one) and even imported the sole release of the Gamecube PES (Winning Eleven 6 final evolution).
I'm prepared for the backlash/angry emails because of this next sentence, but I feel I'm correct.
The main "feel" of PES and the "individuality" comes from 4 main running/dribbling animations. Yep. Remember? You could choose them for any player in the game in the edit mode (from PE6). I remember it being one of the main factors that elevated PES beyond the rest at the time cause Freddie Ljungberg had his own style of run with little nuances on how he controlled the ball.
The second point is the player faces. They've always, ALWAYS looked better in PES. It's what defined the ISS series (You know? international Superstar Soccer. Emphasis on the SUPERSTAR). Koppers actually LOOKED like Kluivert and Allejo actually LOOKED like Romario even way back in the SNES days.
The third part is presentation. Konami have always had the best goal replays and game intros. They've been using the same camera's for the replays and celebrations for years now. The sequence of banging in a goal into a water-ripple-like net and having the game cut to a TV-Style camera angle to watch (in realtime) your players celebrate and then going over the goal from 2 other angles and then coming back to the goal celebration in slow motion, and then giving you control of the replay, has been around in the ISS/PES franchise for yonks. From PES6 they've given us over 70 different real life celebrations you can do and you could always choose them in edit mode.
Lets also not forget the league/cup celebrations that last for ages with the ceremony of medal presenting and running around the pitch with the cup.
All of this adds to the personality of the game. I called it "mystic" cause no one ever bothers trying to explain it. Above is the truth and I feel it can be bettered. Maybe that's the reason for the hostility i normally receive for posts like this?
For me, all it would take would be for EA to add 4-5 new dribbling animations that could be assigned in edit mode as well. One for each kind of player:
- Burley/Strong but skillful player dribbling (rooney/podolski/ibrahimmovic/Drogba/Ferdidand/etc)- Light/fast player/skillful (lennon/robben/walcott)- Strong/Less skilled (Terry/Puyol/Cannacaro/etc)- Average skill.
That's pretty much how the 4 skilled lined up in PES6. (go check it out). Each has their own reaction to kicking/running/turning/trapping. Pretty revolutionary for it's time and they use the same formula to this day. If EA mimicked this for Fifa11 with that next gen animation and physics engine powering these new Fifa's (using inverse kinetics) I feel that would be enough for individuality (AI is a whole other issue ).
Next though, for individuality, is seeing your players lift a trophy at the end of the season. It would add tonnes to the game. It's so underrated. Imagine lifting the ACTUAL Premier League title with the Barclays banners and fireworks etc? EA have the licence so we haven't even seen a 3D model of any of the trophies being presented in any footy game. Sad isn't it?

But aren't all games reviews paid-for guaranteed-at-least 8/10 PR nonsense. Is there actually a good/reliable games site? I don't know who to trust.
Anyway, no mention of 360dribbling on the EA wii site, and this:
“Strike it System” set piecesThe new set piece system will utilise the Wii Remote™ creating tense head to head battles on penalties, free-kicks and corners. Each player must time the shaking of their Wii Remote™ perfectly in order to either score or defend free-kicks, penalties and corners adding to the excitement.

hmmm I don't think all reviews are moneyhatted but a lot are. u can normally guage by the metacritic score but yeah word of mouth is the best review imo. from tht gamespot hands-on it seems like EA have abandoned any notion tht FIFA10 on the wii is actually a football sim, it's apparently arcadey as all hell. probably more in common w/mario strikers then than PES
PES on wii is still a sim; and the controls are amazing but take a little getting used to.

― j.o.n.a, Wednesday, 30 September 2009 13:24 (fifteen years ago)
I've bought the Wii versions of PES both last year and the year before, and this year's looks much the same. It's a good version of the game. Last year they also added back in the ability to use the traditional control method if you so desired. What really makes it stand out though is the Wii controls, and the way they allow better passing and an ability to create nice runs into space on the fly, the ability to control players off the ball easily. It can get a bit overwhelming having that much control though.
However, after watching the video (above) of the year's FIFA on Wii, I'm interested, just because it looks different - a little more game like and maybe a little more appropriate to the Wii. I like the idea of changing things up and making the game play a little more arcade-like... with things like a super meter(!). Definitely will wait for reviews, but it's on my radar now, especially because PES just looks identical to last year's game (which I already have). Cozwn - has anybody written up this year's new tweaks?
― Jeff LeVine, Wednesday, 30 September 2009 14:44 (fifteen years ago)

sounds interesting; I haven't heard anything about that tho
sadly, PES wii tends to get (unfairly) overlooked in all the yearly hubbub and carping between the two factions : /
― cozwn, Wednesday, 30 September 2009 16:13 (fifteen years ago)
nah - I was just joking - I'm sure it's basically exactly the same as last year.
― Jeff LeVine, Wednesday, 30 September 2009 16:18 (fifteen years ago)
Since they allow you to play defense in PES Wii 09 (you couldn't really do anything in 08) and added the missing modes like Master League, I'm not sure what big improvements they could make. Also, 09 came out in like March - they haven't had a full year's development (10 will be out in November).
I doubt I'll be getting it just for updated rosters.
― EZ Snappin, Wednesday, 30 September 2009 16:26 (fifteen years ago)
EZ - do you have a feeling about the FIFA Wii gameplay video above?
― Jeff LeVine, Wednesday, 30 September 2009 16:48 (fifteen years ago)
Mixed thoughts - like the look of the players (just a touch cartoony, in a good way), didn't like the camera angle or sound effects, both of which I assume are tweakable. Don't like the idea of the momentum meter or unblockable shots; I like the fact that PES on Wii can be a pretty hardcore sim. Player control looked pretty decent, which can sometimes be frustrating in PES.
I think there's a place for something between the madcap lunacy of Mario Strikers (which is really fun, if you haven't checked it out) and PES. I don't think I'd buy but might rent it to give it a go.

played one game at a friend's last night. didn't get to delve too deep but the quick match was fun, and there were nice touches. kept accidentally taking free kicks short and fast when i didn't want to. still won the match 1-0.

I really can't be arsed with that unstoppable shot thing on the Wii version, looks really annoying. Also, having never played online, what are you supposed to do when your opponent insists on picking colours that are similar to your own?
― j.o.n.a, Saturday, 3 October 2009 12:24 (fifteen years ago)
Going for the cheapo supermarket price wars option today resulted in me looking at empty shelves in 3 different shops. Tesco is cheapest at £24.94 or something if you can find a store with a copy in stock.

Aye looks like it goes into super slowmo bullet-time whenever someone thinks about shooting.

Spent a little more time with the demo after also playing some PES, and yeah, what really stands out is how fluid the animation is in FIFA 10. Less awkward transitions and lots more little bits of animation that makes the game feel more alive and less stiff. It also seems like they tried to differentiate between the players on the pitch a bit more - you can really see the sizes of different players (sometimes perhaps too exaggerated?). I may end up picking it up after all (depending on if I have the extra cash), just to have the game on 360 and perhaps to play some games online.
I do think my initial impressions of PES were too harsh too. It's much improved and the graphics look quite nice, especially in close up (probably better than FIFA there, actually). On my PC, PES looks even better than the 360 version, with higher resolution, more AA (I think), and no loading. I do prefer its straight forward menu system.
― Jeff LeVine, Sunday, 4 October 2009 05:29 (fifteen years ago)

I need to play as England with Crouch alongside Shaun Wright-Philips just for the anthem line-up at the start.
― Did Atkins Die Yet (onimo), Sunday, 4 October 2009 09:37 (fifteen years ago)
Amazon got it to me yesterday and are refunding me the £10 they'd reduced the price by since shipping it, impressed (although they probably would have remained my lazy default option for everything anyway)

I haven't got my own copy of this yet, but from what I've played the two things I've heard most have been The Lebanon and "Tevez, with his bulldog like approach"
― MPx4A, Monday, 5 October 2009 13:26 (fifteen years ago)
This game is basically broken at the moment, right?
Bugs aside, it's basically a souped up PES5 in that it's terrifyingly hard to avoid being tackled and the computer gets wanky free kicks on the edge of the box that it always scores.
It's good but it makes me angry.
― MPx4A, Wednesday, 7 October 2009 09:21 (fifteen years ago)
It's also PES-like in that it introduces the unloved concept of having your players' "form" randomly go to shit regardless of how many hat tricks they've scored recently

This is forehead slapping stuff.
If you loan players out, the team you loan them out to sells them.
Gotta say I do like the idea of Barnsley craftily flogging Scott Sinclair on for £10 million and nobody noticing though.
― MPx4A, Wednesday, 7 October 2009 10:29 (fifteen years ago)
lol I just started a manager game last night but now i'm a bit frightened really.
i have noticed some other weird stuff, like for example you can't check post-game stats on subbed players. anyone knows how much of these things they will be able to correct with updates, how did it work on 09?

This game was the dog's wotsits till I ordered it, now it's turned into a bug ridden bunch of arse :(
Not really giving a shit about bugs in management mode though, there are proper buggy management sims for that.
― zing me to sleep (onimo), Wednesday, 7 October 2009 14:22 (fifteen years ago)
The actual game of football it plays is fantastic, aside from:
a) the computer scoring 90% of its free kicks and hitting the post with the other 10%b) Keepers rushing out of their six yard box screaming "lob me! loooob meeeeee!" when a striker gets anywhere near the penalty area
They both seem fairly patchable, but the list of things that are annoyingly wrong with the manager mode seems a lot longer than EA are gonna bother to fix - some dude got fired from the Sunderland job for losing to Arsenal in the league cup because he "should have beaten a lower league team", and people are buying players and then having them sign for other teams on a free transfer two weeks later.
Cozwn - you've played the clubs bit, right? Is it as monged as people are saying?

Fuck this game
The constant rain in every match is depressing me and just thinking about all the stuff that's insanely, unplayably wrong with the manager mode sends me into the kind of rage I normally reserve for estate agents
Also fuck reviewers saying "the first four seasons of manager mode I played for the review didn't have any bugs! I guess EA were just lucky, or else I would have crushed them with my hefty journalistic integrity! I only wish I knew now what I knew then!"
― MPx4A, Tuesday, 13 October 2009 13:03 (fifteen years ago)

I feel the very same way
so disillusioned that unless they patch the utter shit out of it, I'm considering picking up a cheap copy of PES
― I peacocked your mom (webinar), Tuesday, 13 October 2009 13:56 (fifteen years ago)
also it is impossible to score from crosses and defending in multiplayer is just jamming the a-button down all day long
I have switched to all manual and dynamic cam which has renewed my interest a bit; I still think it is great, amazing, all that but the bugs are bugging the shit out of me
― I peacocked your mom (webinar), Tuesday, 13 October 2009 13:57 (fifteen years ago)
Yeah, what was wrong with the outfield play on the demo build? The tackling seemed OK on that and you could score a one on one without playing a fucking one-two with the keeper
idiots
― MPx4A, Tuesday, 13 October 2009 14:51 (fifteen years ago)
somewhere, Roberto Spiralli is chuckling quietly
I must say I don't understand the hatin' toward this game at all. so far I find it amazing. Maybe I'll find out some terrible stuff later on...
― AlXTC from Paris, Tuesday, 13 October 2009 15:03 (fifteen years ago)
It is partially sort of not getting properly into the game because of all the stuff I know to be wrong with it from reading elsewhere
The only major manager mode problems I've had in the ten games I've played have been constant gloomy weather and goalkeepers getting credited with all the assists. I think. I didn't try to sign any players because y'know, there's already been a full real world transfer window at the start of that season
Also the only time I tried to play online it crashed my XBOX
― MPx4A, Tuesday, 13 October 2009 15:15 (fifteen years ago)
PES 2010 demo plays like a piece of shit tbh. was almost ready to buy FIFA until fans started slamming it. we are all fucked. i'm going back to Gazza's Super Soccer. see y'all round.
― Roberto Spiralli, Tuesday, 13 October 2009 15:48 (fifteen years ago)
I went back to play PES5 but I'm shit at it now, so I'll persevere w/FIFA. we shd play, mpx4a. you tried manual yet? I guess I cd just set the game to manual controls and just have you deal
― I peacocked your mom (webinar), Tuesday, 13 October 2009 16:14 (fifteen years ago)
I will try manual controls tonight, but when I tried them in the arena on the demo I literally couldn't score a goal
― MPx4A, Tuesday, 13 October 2009 16:51 (fifteen years ago)
no real bugs so far except for excessively bold goalies - but yes the crosses are kinda shit in this version
― spiny doughboy (baaderonixx), Tuesday, 13 October 2009 17:12 (fifteen years ago)
Does this manual control thing mean I'm not, by default, controlling it manually?
Scored a couple of goals from crosses on noob level but I feel as if I've got no idea where a cross will land. Keepers doing too well in one-on-ones but I suppose that leads to fewer stupid scorelines.
I'm currently playing as Celtic and putting everything through the middle because the wing play is piss - so realistic :) Just had 22 shots to Hibs' 3 and lost 2-1 lol
Favourite bit of commentary so far was Tyler and Gray being astonished that St Mirren were subbing Mo Camara on - giving it "What is the manager thinking?"
― Suggest Gandhi (onimo), Tuesday, 13 October 2009 19:52 (fifteen years ago)
i don't get the sudden hate on this either. haven't delved that deep into manager mode yet, though i've been playing be a pro season which is kind of stupid but still addictive. most of all i've been playing this offline multiplayer and there it really delivers. of course then all you have to worry about is the actual gameplay which i guess we all agree is pretty amazing? haven't tried this out on live yet cuz i still kinda suck tbh
― sonderangerbot, Wednesday, 14 October 2009 12:37 (fifteen years ago)

Just getting around to downloading the demo now, the game doesn't come out in the US for a few more days. They're having the nat'l launch here in Chicago, though... Blanco will be on-hand for a FIFA tournament at Best Buy downtown (how's that for product/sponsor/superstar tie-ins) and the winner will get some kind of ginormous television.

― I see what this is (Local Garda), Saturday, 17 October 2009 15:40 (fifteen years ago)
I added you.
I've shunted it down to professional difficulty and stuck everything on semi-assisted except for manual crossing. It doesn't seem that much different, underhit passes aside; I guess the jump to full manual is the real gulf.
The headed set piece goals in this tend to look very good, when you manage to actually get one.
― MPx4A, Monday, 19 October 2009 08:52 (fifteen years ago)
I've played fifa some more this week-end, at international level, and I don't see the problem with scoring on crosses. of course it doesn't work everytime (and thank god !) but I've scored some pretty cool goals (headers or volleys).
― AlXTC from Paris, Monday, 19 October 2009 11:37 (fifteen years ago)
I can't score from crosses at all : / but I'm enjoying the game much more now I've switched short passing and crossing back up to semi, with everything else on manual
anyone else tried dynamic at full height and zoomed right out? the only way to play singleplayer imo; I only ever used to play with the wide camera in PES or the tele cam at full height and zoom in FIFA 09 but dynamic is great, u really get to appreciate all the little animation touches.
― coz (webinar), Monday, 19 October 2009 11:40 (fifteen years ago)
oh yeah ? I haven't really tried other cameras yet. the dynamic is the one for the be a pro mode, right ?

Birmingham 3 - 0 Arsenal.
^just needed to tell the world, tbh.
― DavidM, Monday, 19 October 2009 12:23 (fifteen years ago)
I think pro mode is pro camera, which I hate. the frame rate is really low on that one. I use tele for that mode because dynamic is too zoomed in for tht mode imo
single player manager mode I use dynamic all the way
― coz (webinar), Monday, 19 October 2009 14:14 (fifteen years ago)
hum. I'll have a look at that...the "normal" cam is alright, though.
― AlXTC from Paris, Monday, 19 October 2009 14:24 (fifteen years ago)
yeah, it is good def; I just think the game looks better on dynamic. I thought PES2010 was a better looking game till I made the switch, now I'm not so sure
― coz (webinar), Monday, 19 October 2009 14:40 (fifteen years ago)
EVERYONE PUT YOUR CROSSING TO SEMI I CAN'T STOP SCORING HEADED GOALS NOW
― coz (webinar), Monday, 19 October 2009 17:48 (fifteen years ago)
what are the differences btw the different settings?
― spiny doughboy (baaderonixx), Monday, 19 October 2009 19:21 (fifteen years ago)
manual is full manual: you control the direction and power of passes, shots, crosses, long passes and through balls.
semi is somewhere in-between. assisted the computer is basically playing the game for you and you're a grotesque ugly manbaby
― coz (webinar), Monday, 19 October 2009 23:49 (fifteen years ago)
patch details btwhttp://www.operationsports.com/forums/ea-sports-fifa-discussion/370009-list-changes-next-patch.html
― coz (webinar), Monday, 19 October 2009 23:50 (fifteen years ago)
so I've tried the dynamic cam. it does look better since you can see the players very well and it's more intense and more individual but you lose the more strategic approach since you only see a very small part of the pitch.I'm not sure which cam I prefer...
― AlXTC from Paris, Tuesday, 20 October 2009 09:09 (fifteen years ago)
some of the text is infuriatingly small, kills my eyes.
so semi is the way to go cozen? I just played somebody with athletico and had about 30 shots on goal, should have win about 12-4 but lost 4-0. i was missing the most easy chances.
it's enjoyable alright but some things still v irritating eg the corners, they look and feel shit. nice passing moves tho, it's a good game for counter attacks.
another irritant is how hard it is to clear your lines, it seems whoever is on the attack is massively at an advantage all the time, as defenders keep passing the ball to stray returning attackers over and over.
― I see what this is (Local Garda), Tuesday, 20 October 2009 16:31 (fifteen years ago)
i know. never, never try to pass when in your own penalty area.
― sonderangerbot, Tuesday, 20 October 2009 17:03 (fifteen years ago)
just press shoot to clear your lines, unless you have enough space to charge up a long pass
I have all manual, w/semi on short pass and crossing; play around to find what fits u best obv :)

The thing I'm noticing in FIFA 10 is that there seems to be more little things that you can do & that the little things you do can make a bigger difference, but maybe it's just me? I tried out dynamic view, but it felt like it was too zoomed in - it made me feel uncomfortable (though I used it last year). I like how much of the game you can see with the default view, especially with the widescreen aspect ration, which makes a huge difference. Red cards seems easier to pick up, but maybe it's because I haven't quite gotten used to the controls yet after going back to PES 5 for the last month or so.

The computer can be weirdly hyper-aggressive. Just played a match where they won two red cards in the first 20 minutes. I've never played a game against the AI where that has ever happened, that I can remember. Should I be embarrassed I only won 6-0?
― Jeff LeVine, Monday, 26 October 2009 05:28 (fifteen years ago)
Finally played my first online ranked match, and it was great. Maybe I just got lucky? It felt so much more dynamic and interesting compared to the games I've been playing against the computer - much more intense. When my opponent scored ten minutes in I figured I was doomed by lack of experience, but I scored an equalizer shortly before the half, then scored a second goal at 90+ for the satisfying (and surprising) victory.
This Saturday and/or Sunday I'll definitely be on for some ILX league games.

I've always been a PES guy (the last several years exclusive to the Wii version), but this is on sale for $40 and I can get it for half that with some gift cards. Should I break down and give it a go? Are the tutorials decent or will I just flail and die like I did with the demo?
― EZ Snappin, Tuesday, 15 December 2009 03:58 (fifteen years ago)

the tutorials are pretty cool.I still love this game. And still don't understand people who complain about how it's a disaster because of its bugs (there are some but they don't annoy me much). I've also played the career mode a lot and although it's supposed to be horrible because of said bugs, I love it (and no it's not always raining and evening games !).
― AlXTC from Paris, Tuesday, 15 December 2009 13:55 (fifteen years ago)
EZ, I really don't think the game is terribly different from classic PES other than reversing the shot and lob buttons (which are reconfigurable anyways). I'd suggest it has caught up to the best years of PES. The final game and the demo are pretty much exactly the same though, so if you couldn't get into that... Yet, after five or ten games I'm sure anybody with even a passing knowledge of football will be able to grasp the surface play in FIFA and do decently. The key to really getting into the game is having "real life" friends to play against. Playing against the computer is fine, but it lacks a certain dynamism and excitement. Playing online seems likek it can kind of be a crap shoot, in that you have to sometimes deal with the stuff associated with playing random games against strangers 1 vs 1. We tried setting up an ILX league on 360, but have yet to get enough players to have that be really viable. Maybe in a few more years we will finally get there!
― Jeff LeVine, Tuesday, 15 December 2009 15:49 (fifteen years ago)
p.s. 360 league, we should try to play some games this Saturday or Sunday
Picked it up because I just couldn't pass up the deal. I'll let you guys know what I think after some time with it. By the way, watching a few of those video tutorials were the kicker.
I think my trouble with the demo was coming to it after two years of only PES Wii. The mindset needed is so radically different I couldn't wrap my head around it. I think I'll be able to figure it out and hopefully won't get too frustrated with AI teammates; PES Wii really spoils the player in that regard.

I'm slowly getting a handle on this - really quite good, and the AI seems much better than in the demo. I do have a question though - is anyone playing the Be A Pro thing? I really love it in the NHL series, but I'm having trouble finding a camera that works well for it in FIFA. Any suggestions? And speaking of cameras, what are people using for general play? I'm not exactly happy with any of the defaults, and my tweaks don't seem to be helping.

The last PES (on PS2, admittedly, I ain't that much of a pimp) is a steaming pile, but this was just fucking horrible. Hateful weightless feel, shots just go at random directions, passes go to random players, camera frequently lags behind the ball and there is slowdown (fucking SLOWDOWN people it's 2010 ffs) at corners/set plays.

The demo of WC2010 is pretty good, but it's so short it's difficult to get a real handle on it. It's a bit tighter and the goalkeepers aren't morons. Physics of keepers making saves seems a bit more varied. Commentary from Townsend and Tyldsley appropriately infernal but seems to benefit from a less-is-more approach compared to FIFA 2010's misguided ramblings.
It's a risible cash grab obviously, but I'm assuming there'll be hundreds of them available used by the time World Cup Fever is properly gripping mah throat.

There's no 10vs10 mode in WC2010, strangely.
I've been playing online BAP in FIFA over the last few days. If you play ranked pro matches you get people who are trying to get scouted so most of them pass the ball to you. You also get four voice messages a day from five year old kids asking if you want to join their team; I am waiting for the right offer, possibly from some seven or eight year olds.

I've played a few games of World Cup and am happy with the purchase. Nothing radically different - looks a bit better, seems slightly more responsive and less twitchy (I feel like I have better control over power of shots and crosses, but I traded in FIFA so can't directly compare). The Captaincy mode (Be A Pro replacement) is a big step up - good feedback, more info and nicer interfaces and menus.

The ball physics are better, the keepers are better, and the matches seem to have an actual realistic flow instead of just being you having five one-on-ones saved and then getting fucked over by a wanky free kick in the 85th minute. I played Andorra and they stuck ten men behind the ball and fouled me a lot, I played Germany and they beat me 3-1 with ruthless Teutonic efficiency; I didn't feel remotely cheated. Shootouts also great.
It's going to be annoyingly impossible to go back to FIFA 10 for club matches, and knowing these fucks they'll probably take half this stuff back out of FIFA 11.
― MPx4A, Tuesday, 4 May 2010 10:24 (fifteen years ago)
the keepers are better
As in, they stay on their line until it's smart to come out, but they can also let shots squirm under their body or fail to get any height on a backpass clearance if they're under pressure. Pretty sure I've also seen the "flapping at a cross and punching it straight down into the ground" spot, but that may have been weird deflections
Also the John Terry Falling On His Arse Penalty Animation is in

I've picked up the World Cup edition (for ps3) as I wanted an easy way to play some online games. So far I've kind of just been griefing/trolling people by playing 2 star teams and it has been an amazing lot of fun. I actually got a guy to rage quit tonight when at the 80 minute mark I still led 2-0 vs his Mexican side, when I was playing New Zealand (LOL). I also almost beat Brazil with Uzbekistan after getting an early 2-0 lead, which unfortunately I wasn't able to maintain as Brazil managed to come back to win 3-2 (scoring their third goal in the 87th minute to break my heart). It also cracks me up that even after seeing me pick a crappy 2 star team, so far all my opponents still go on to pick 4 1/2 to 5 star teams like Italy / Brazil / Ivory Coast etc... good times.
― Jeff LeVine, Friday, 4 June 2010 01:30 (fifteen years ago)
Suffered a semi-shameful 0-7 online defeat when I picked half star New Caledonia vs. five star France (though I don't quite understand a rating system that gives France five stars, tbh). I did manage to hold France scoreless until the 45 minute mark, but in the second half they were just unstoppable. Guess my poor guys were tuckered out :(

pretty much despised FIFA10 as much as any other FIFA. So much hype over the last few FIFA iterations about how they're really overtaken PES and that the games have really changed but i swear the FIFA i used to play on the gamecube is more or less the same as 10 just with worse graphics and slightly less control (obviously loads of extra features like where you play as one player in the game and all that pish that i will never care about but whatevs). Not that it's not better than the new PES games on the xbox, they've just totally gone backwards, so sad.

thought FIFA10 did lots of things right (the 360 control was an amazing innovation) but the physicality was fundamentally flawed and prone to some illogical rubber banding; I do wish some developer would take the lead and let you pay for roster updates to a game instead of having to fork out for a new game entirely. this way if you liked a particular game's engine you could keep playing it for as long as you want. it wouldn't be that hard to do surely with xbl and PSN these days... they'd likely lose out on too much money though
I still playing FIFA 09 now and again; it's really a great game, don't agree that it's just your mother's FIFA, though it does share some of the 'feeling' (the 'slidiness'?) of old FIFA

I almost picked up PES2010 earlier this week since it's so cheap, but I kept thinking with the new game coming out in just a few more months and maybe better (we will see), I might as well wait (and picked up the Wolrd Cup game instead). Some of what's missing in FIFA for me (not compared to current PES, but just in general) is that it doesn't feel crisp enough, that the game seems to move at only two speeds (slow or medium) and you don't get a nice gradiation of speed of movement the leads to variety, sometimes it feels like you're swimming on the pitch instead of running, that annoying draggy animation when you're close to a goal keeper holding the ball that amazingly wasn't fixed for the world cup version, and probbaly most importantly that close play feels totally random and like nothing. Also with the World Cup game the online has been disappointing as it seems to dump you into a match only based on if somebody is looking for a match too and it doesn't take connection quality into account as about half my games so far have been laggy and one unplayable due to running at less than half speed. Wish it looked for connection quality even if I had to wait a minute or two for a game. Problem is probably worse since the WC game probably sold 1/10th as much as FIFA 10.

yeah - I don't think this is ever going to happen officially. On the other hand, people are still doing this with PES 6, I think - you can download option files for the current season with players and kits (haven't tried to update yet myself as I rather like the "classic" feel).
― Jeff LeVine, Sunday, 6 June 2010 15:26 (fifteen years ago)
So I've picked up the Wii version of the World Cup game (only $40 - shrug), and well, I like it, actually I really like it. So far, definitely having more fun with this than the HD version. It's cartoony, yes, and exaggerated, but both in a good way - feels more game like. It's also less glitchy than the HD versions and runs much more smoothly (which is what was starting to really bug me with the ps3 game). It's not as simplified as something like Sensible Soccer, but it has that fun, less serious feeling and style. Actually I think the graphics look pretty good, definitely better than the semi-realistic Wii games like PES. There's also some depth - in particular, passing feels like it takes more skill than in the HD versions (you definitely can't ping pong pass). Shooting with a shake feels good too. Defense, I still haven't really figured out - it feels the least good (so far) - kinda like PES on Wii actually - just sort of a vague feeling. I only tried two online games so far and it seemed to work smoothly and pretty much lag free, I was impressed. Games could be a little longer and I'm not sure the balance between what you can do on offense vs. defense is exactly there, but I really have to play more to say for sure. Fun is good!

It seemed like PES was going down the 'magic skill' route worse though, by letting you map eg a rainbow flick to one direction on the right stick and letting you do it whenever you want.
They also need to learn some of the lessons from the WC game and up the difficulty a lot because I was winning basically every game of FIFA 10 at least 3-0 by the end.

think that's a FIFA 08 innovation, maybe even earlier
can't decide betw. this and PES this year, burned out on FIFA 10 and its 'physical game' bullshit p.quickly and PES is shaping up quite nicely

The weird thing about PES this year is that it's looking more and more like a FIFA clone (maybe not so weird considering FIFA has been killing the last couple of years). Will be interested to try out the demos for both... here's some PES 2011 gameplay from Gamescom I was just watching...

FIFA 11 still appears to flow better, I think...

I'm not at all convinced by that PES footage at all, it just looks like the same old illogical ping-pong passing and awkward changes of direction, and sprinting diagonally towards the corner flag until you can turn back and pass it across the 18 yard line for ages waiting for a tap in. The ball physics look quite good though.
I hope the FIFA10 team have taken on quite a lot of the improvements from the World Cup game. I know they've ported over the cool penalty system, but WC really lived up the promise of how satisfying the 360 control should have been in FIFA 10. When the AI isn't relentlessly pressuring you with two men with infinite stamina, the sense of territorial gain and ball retention is a lot more enjoyable.
It might be that the guys on the FIFA demo are just better at the game, but there's definitely an awkwardness to PES that I don't think they'll ever quite get rid of this generation.

FITE!
I'm still enjoying being mostly rubbish at the FIFA single player and this doesn't look like anything new (or new enough to feel like a full release) so I think I'll skip it, at least until the dust settles.

I'm right there w/you but then the supermarkets always do FIFA pretty cheap on release so I might be swayed
