This game is completely amazing. The modern setting makes for a really disturbing experience. I'm not really a war-sim guy, but it's hard not to be impressed by this one. Only complaint: it has got to be the noisiest game ever. The gunfire is very constant and heavy. It's like hanging out at a shooting range.

Ragtime mode!
― Telephone thing, Friday, 9 November 2007 08:48 (eighteen years ago)
I picked it up yesterday, but was too busy to give it a play. I ca'nt wait until tonight to give it a real shot. How's the multi? I'm so excited.
― Will M., Friday, 9 November 2007 15:32 (eighteen years ago)
This game is nuts. It is so ridiculously intense I can't believe it. Are the politics going toi get really creepy? I'm worried that will happen. It kind of already does since the first mission is you slaughtering a boat's crew in their sleep.
― antexit, Friday, 9 November 2007 15:49 (eighteen years ago)
It kind of already does since the first mission is you slaughtering a boat's crew in their sleep.
When my friend did that part he cackled audibly as he murdered the dudes in their bunkbeds. It was disturbing and awesome.

Trying to resist - too many games
― Jeff LeVine, Friday, 9 November 2007 18:01 (eighteen years ago)
If you like FPSs, at least rent it.
― polyphonic, Friday, 9 November 2007 18:14 (eighteen years ago)
This isn't coming out for PS2, is it. :(
― The Cursed Return of the Dastardly Thermo Thinwall, Friday, 9 November 2007 19:38 (eighteen years ago)
negative, friend. :/
― Will M., Friday, 9 November 2007 19:44 (eighteen years ago)
:`(
I may buy III instead, while I can then.
― The Cursed Return of the Dastardly Thermo Thinwall, Friday, 9 November 2007 20:14 (eighteen years ago)
Ok, the single-player campaign in this game is super fun. The highlight for me has to be, uhh, without spoilers, the mission where you hang out just you the scottish guy. If you've beaten that part, you know the mission I mean. SOOOOOOO suspenseful and exciting!
The multi, too, is a lot of fun. I created a class or two, but I'm only level 6 or 7 or something, so not much is available to me yet. I'm working on it, though... I'm enjoying the multi about as much as Halo , and more than TF2 (which has sucked for me so far on 360, tbh).
― Will M., Monday, 12 November 2007 15:58 (eighteen years ago)
The part where you're manning a gun in a plane while looking through a black/white monitor is spectacular and disturbing.
― polyphonic, Monday, 12 November 2007 17:50 (eighteen years ago)
Awww yeah, I forgot about that part! Really, really amazing also. Possibly even better than the bit I mentioned before! Whenever I get a "clan tag" (level 22 I think), I will totally make it ILX :D
― Will M., Monday, 12 November 2007 18:31 (eighteen years ago)
just finished the single player campaign. fucking awesome. multiplayer good too, all around a much better package than halo.
― adam, Monday, 12 November 2007 19:44 (eighteen years ago)
my Dad bought a CoD game and spent an entire Sunday creeping up on one German. he told me he gave up b/c the game takes too long. I think this is what happens when you haven't played Doom/Quake and aren't used to feeding people your shotgun to the face.
― bnw, Monday, 12 November 2007 20:41 (eighteen years ago)
that story is awesome and I love it
― El Tomboto, Monday, 12 November 2007 20:46 (eighteen years ago)
Yeah, I stuck CoD on the parent's computer, and my dad got stuck at some point where you have to throw grenades at some enscounced germans. my suggestion of just doing the run & gun didn't seem to work on him, i guess.
― kingfish, Tuesday, 13 November 2007 00:31 (eighteen years ago)
Haha, it's easy t forget how much FPSes have become, err, based more on each other than "real life"-- even the "realistic" ones involve running at someone guns blazing at some point.
― Will M., Tuesday, 13 November 2007 15:19 (eighteen years ago)
There should be a brutally hardcore FPS where if you get shot in the leg, you limp for the rest of the campaign. And you need to take time to fix up your leg or bleed out.
people would rather just get killed.
― El Tomboto, Tuesday, 13 November 2007 17:10 (eighteen years ago)
i fully agree with that proposal and would add only that if you die, you should have to wait 5 minutes before you can play again
― Tracer Hand, Wednesday, 14 November 2007 02:36 (eighteen years ago)
Nah, if you die, it autoloads the last "checkpoint," when your leg was still shot. Or you can start the whole game over.
― Will M., Wednesday, 14 November 2007 15:23 (eighteen years ago)
Or yeah, make it so you have to wait five minutes... but that five minutes is spent sitting through a story of the character's life up until he died. "Bob Briggs was a steelworker and was very active in the PTA at his five-year-old daughter's school before he was pulled into Iraq due to his enrollment in the reserves fourteen years ago. He enjoyed cooking and was a Longhorns fan. He didn't know at his time of death, but his wife is pregnant with their second child, and first son."
Then you switch to the next dude in your team's POV. Rouuuuuuugh.
― Will M., Wednesday, 14 November 2007 15:47 (eighteen years ago)
I just picked this up last night. It's too much! I haven't touched the campaign yet, just gotten slaughtered in multi.
― dan m, Friday, 16 November 2007 18:36 (eighteen years ago)
the only way this game could be better is if someone released a Dad's Army total conversion mod
― DG, Saturday, 17 November 2007 11:09 (eighteen years ago)
Loving the multiplayer (so far). It's running incredibly smooth (ps3) too - such a nice change from TF2. They did a really good, creative job of incentivising playing more - since ranking up actually seems to mean something with the new weapons and shit you get. Watching the various challenge meters slowly fill up is also fun. Called in my first airstrike tonight and wiped three guys off the map (still haven't won a game yet though). With all the weapons, challenges and gametypes to unlock - it seems like a pretty deep experience. I see myself spending a bunch of time in there. Also need to play the solo campaign at some point...
― Jeff LeVine, Tuesday, 20 November 2007 05:40 (eighteen years ago)
martyrdom is best perk
― adam, Tuesday, 20 November 2007 22:55 (eighteen years ago)
martyrdom hasn't helped me once yet. And I have been using it a lot on my custom class "Terrorist" (AK-47 with desert camo, RPG, Martyrdom, and I forget the last perk). Much prefer Last Stand, you get a lot of xp for last stand kills, too!!
― Will M., Wednesday, 21 November 2007 15:51 (eighteen years ago)
I've only played this once - but i LOVED last stand! "IF I'M DYING I'M TAKING AS MANY OF YOU COCKFARMERS WITH ME AS POSSIB..." *expires*
― The Cursed Return of the Dastardly Thermo Thinwall, Wednesday, 21 November 2007 16:00 (eighteen years ago)
OTM, it's so excitng when a guy thinks he has you, and then you are all "OH FUK U" and gat his face off and then shoot yourself in the head! ("Hold X For Coward's Way Out" was such a fucking gutsy thing to put, it's CRAZY)
― Will M., Wednesday, 21 November 2007 16:25 (eighteen years ago)
wait you can off yourself in this? that's real
― gff, Wednesday, 21 November 2007 16:56 (eighteen years ago)
Should I buy this game? Multi sounds funner than Halo. I've already beat the single player on a rental.
― antexit, Wednesday, 21 November 2007 17:07 (eighteen years ago)
I liked Halo 3 multi but I like COD4 multi much more, tbh.
― Will M., Wednesday, 21 November 2007 17:27 (eighteen years ago)
I much prefer it to Halo. It plays much faster - for one important thing. I love being able to sprint! The variety of weapons, perks and the way you level up for bonuses & the challenge system all help to give it a feeling of a lot more variety - a lot more options - and a lot more to do than just memorize maps. And there seems to be a lot of maps (I don't think I've even yet seen 'em all) - with a fair bit of variety to 'em - from daytime to dusk to playing in a steady downpour helps to change things up more than random sci-fi backgrounds of h3. I even like the kill cam - which somehow makes your own death dramatic and exciting (and funny sometimes) - instead of just showing you who killed you. I've yet to try (or even unlock) all the gametypes, but can definitely say big team battles are a little too crazy. I've also yet to get the martyrdom perk (I'm just at level 15), but sure am looking forward to trying it out - it's defiitely frustrating to stumble across a guy coming around the corner, and to get the drop on them only to have their dying grenade blow up in your face.
― Jeff LeVine, Wednesday, 21 November 2007 17:54 (eighteen years ago)
Are you playing on PS3 or 360, Jeff? If the latter, we should party up sometime. The martyrdom grenades are pretty easy to toss away if you keep your eye on it (or run away from).
― Will M., Wednesday, 21 November 2007 19:10 (eighteen years ago)
ps3, actually - when multi-platform games are supposed to be equal on both sytems (and come out the same day) I'm inclined to go for the ps3 version, mainly because it feels like my xbox is going to die again at any moment. But also because I just like the smoothness of the ps3 interface a little more these days (and the quietness of the machine). Anyhow...
For some reason I've yet to be able to get the timing right to pick up and toss away those fucking martyrdom grenades. It seems like you've got to be fast and always thinking about it? I've had a little more luck running / jumping away from those things - but half the time as I'm celebrating that I avoided being blown up somebody shoots me in the back!
― Jeff LeVine, Wednesday, 21 November 2007 19:40 (eighteen years ago)
love this game
suck at sniping/avoiding getting sniped
― adam, Wednesday, 21 November 2007 20:51 (eighteen years ago)
the matchmaking sucks quite a bit though unless it's putting n00by me in with field marshal players for a laugh :(
― DG, Thursday, 22 November 2007 12:59 (eighteen years ago)
If you're talking abt the Xbox one, I think it just tries to find the fastest match for you to connect to. Not really matchmaking per se. But I find that if you play intelligently, you can easily go 1:1 kill:death even against field marshals... just use caution, crawl through grass, carry an assault rifle, etc.
― Will M., Thursday, 22 November 2007 16:08 (eighteen years ago)
well i do OK but i'd rather be awesome...hmm practice practice :(
― DG, Thursday, 22 November 2007 16:47 (eighteen years ago)
I think the idea to throw everybody together regardless of rank seems to work. I can't really notice a difference between when it's done this way and when it is done the other. I'm not a very careful player though. My k/d ratio seems firmly locked in at 0.78 kills for each death
Not enjoying the single player campaign as much - it just feels too familiar. However, I did just finish the Death from Above level - which I thought was amazing. Easy, yes, but really different and mesmerizing. Still a long ways to go I guess, so hopefully I'll get more into it.

oop - sorry - I assumed it was across all systems...
― Jeff LeVine, Friday, 7 December 2007 19:56 (eighteen years ago)
I had zero interest in this until I read Rock Paper Shotgun's writeup in their "games of the year"-type feature running this month and ran across a massive plot spoiler from the SP campaign. On the one hand, it's a shame I won't be running into that unprepared, on the other hand, <i>daaamn</i>.
― Telephone thing, Saturday, 8 December 2007 21:16 (eighteen years ago)
Not too into the single player campaign - the stuff you get to do (other than on a couple of missions) just feels too much like stuff I've done too many times before. I'm only about halfway through it so far though - just can't get too motivated to push thru the rest - even though it's supposed to be pretty short.
Every time I turn it on I just go to multiplayer. I've been enjoying domination lately - and yesterday even saw three maps I'd never seen before - which is weird as I've supposedly already logged in around 17 hours!
― Jeff LeVine, Monday, 10 December 2007 21:15 (eighteen years ago)
I was just taking a look at the leaderboards for this game, and discovered that the person with the highest score has already played it for 8 days 2 hours and 57 minutes!!! I love that you can see (insane) stats like that.
I feel slightly less bad about already logging twenty hours myself...
― Jeff LeVine, Thursday, 13 December 2007 06:47 (eighteen years ago)
only 8 days? i thought it was higher when i check a couple weeks ago for 360 (i did the calc at the time... it had been out a week and the guy had been averaging something like 16-18 hours a day)
― Will M., Thursday, 13 December 2007 16:22 (eighteen years ago)
this game is amazing
it's weird: I've felt in all the cod games that in the single player you never really feel like your palpably making a difference. I think it's cos your squad is so capable they cd pretty much do the missions themselves. felt this with cod2 too
whereas in the multiplayer each kill feels very real... I love it
― czn, Sunday, 23 December 2007 02:12 (eighteen years ago)
So angry I can't get this to work on my system.
― Dan I., Tuesday, 25 December 2007 17:37 (eighteen years ago)
i played this on xbox live yesterday. think it took me 3 games to actually kill someone. figuring out "no name over his head means kill him" was crucial.
― bnw, Tuesday, 25 December 2007 19:17 (eighteen years ago)
This has pretty much filled the gulf that growing sick of CS had left in me. Like in Lethal Weapon 4 when Riggs is getting married again and Leo Getz gives him that speech about his pet frog.
― jim, Tuesday, 25 December 2007 19:21 (eighteen years ago)
bnw - there's free-for-all as well as team deathmatch, when you're starting out, I think.
jim - are there interesting new maps for this on the PC? Do they let people do CoD mods / user maps?
― Jeff LeVine, Monday, 31 December 2007 07:56 (eighteen years ago)
I don't have it on the PC. I am usually a PC gamer, especially in regards to fps games, but my computer, which was top of the range about three years ago, is now fairly awful and would run Call of Duty with some difficulty on lower graphics, so I'm sticking with the Xbox version. Xbox pad isn't quite mouse + wasd but it's getting more intuitive.
― jim, Monday, 31 December 2007 16:14 (eighteen years ago)
totally OTM
I finally got around to beating the single player mode the other day when Live kept fucking up for me (anyone else get this?). The whole time I kind of felt like I wasn't really doing anything.
I'm in Prestige mode in multi now, and loving playing against all the n00bs who got it for xmas.
― dan m, Sunday, 6 January 2008 03:02 (eighteen years ago)
What does the light bulb or light thing above a player's head mean on xbox live?
― svend, Wednesday, 19 March 2008 04:44 (seventeen years ago)
it means the player just had a bright idea!
― s1ocki, Wednesday, 19 March 2008 04:53 (seventeen years ago)
Nope. I wish it was that, wouldn't have to put everyone's mic on mute then.
― svend, Wednesday, 19 March 2008 05:01 (seventeen years ago)
I think it means they are "AFK" i.e. an easy headshot.
― dan m, Wednesday, 19 March 2008 15:52 (seventeen years ago)
so on this xbox thing you have to pay for map packs?
― DG, Thursday, 20 March 2008 12:12 (seventeen years ago)
Usually they start off costing something and then get free after a couple months. Isn't that the same on all platforms? What sux is I'm not paying for this shit, cool as they look, but prolly everyone will be playing on them the next couple months so I won't be able to get a good game.
― antexit, Thursday, 20 March 2008 13:25 (seventeen years ago)
I'm thinking about buying them, I like CoD4 so much!!! it is annoying though that they're eventually free
when I was playing the shit out of gears, I held off on buying the maps for them, even tho I wanted them... then when they were finally free, I'd stopped playing
is it it worth it, IS ANY OF IT WORTH IT????
― czn, Thursday, 20 March 2008 13:34 (seventeen years ago)
i like cod4 but am so bored with the maps but i don't care that much i'd spend bucks on the download
― DG, Thursday, 20 March 2008 13:36 (seventeen years ago)
Ten dollars is too much for four maps. I don't want to sound like a tombot, but that's flat out corporate greed & shouldn't be supported. I'm not saying maps should be free (even though they will be free on PC & the PC game costs ten dollars less than the console version - so explain that Actiblizzard), but they should at least be reasonably priced. A dollar a map would be in the realm of fair - considering the potential sales of new maps for a game that sold in the millions already. Actually considering how much money they've already made off the game, the maps should be free - jeez look what Valve has done with Team Fortress 2 - not only have they released some really nice free maps (with more on the way), but they're releasing totally new game types - all for free (well, not "free," I consider that extra stuff included in the cost of buying the game in the first place). On the console front - Burnout Paradise is releasing whole extra islands worth of roads for "free" and I'm sure that game hasn't sold 1/10th of what CoD4 sold.
It should be noted - I've yet to hear any official announcement that the Call of Duty maps will eventually be free. As far as I know, only some Halo 2 maps and Gears of War stuff eventually became free on consoles - nothing else that I know of.
― Jeff LeVine, Thursday, 20 March 2008 16:34 (seventeen years ago)
CoD4 just arrived AT MY DOOR.
― s1ocki, Thursday, 20 March 2008 16:47 (seventeen years ago)
I still haven't finished the single player campaign!
― Jeff LeVine, Thursday, 20 March 2008 16:52 (seventeen years ago)
single player is awful
jeff, you've convinced me! no maps for me!!
― czn, Thursday, 20 March 2008 16:59 (seventeen years ago)
"single player is awful" = RONG
― David R., Thursday, 20 March 2008 17:51 (seventeen years ago)
have set out my thoughts on it upthread, more reasoned like
it just feels very meaningless what with the annoying infinite respawns
that being said there are some great mission ideas!!
― czn, Thursday, 20 March 2008 19:33 (seventeen years ago)
Yeah, I didn't stop playing the single player (halfway through so far, I guess) because i got stuck, or because it was hard (it wasn't), just because i found it totally uninteresting, routine and too much like a bunch of other games I'd already played in 2007, 2006, 2005, etc... Have got more than my money's worth with the included multiplayer stuff though - which is very, very solid. I'm at level 36 so far, and still playing every now and then. But now that I have a computer good enough to play the game, I really wish I'd bought the PC version instead (don't quite like the game enough to buy it twice though).
― Jeff LeVine, Thursday, 20 March 2008 20:30 (seventeen years ago)
So has anybody on here got up to level 55 yet? And if so, what did you do?
― Jeff LeVine, Friday, 28 March 2008 04:06 (seventeen years ago)
popped a bottle of bub?
― s1ocki, Friday, 28 March 2008 05:05 (seventeen years ago)
jeff do you play this on ps3 or xbox?
Will someone play a cage match with me?
― czn, Friday, 28 March 2008 13:22 (seventeen years ago)
I'll admit it, I got to lvl. 55 and did prestige mode. Learning to get by with just the basics is kind of fun.
I'd play a cage match, I guess, I've never done that game type before.
― dan m, Friday, 28 March 2008 13:42 (seventeen years ago)
Cool, what's your gamertag? In fact hit me up, I'm on as cozeny.
You'll probably school me (Lvl 55!), but it's worth a try!
― czn, Friday, 28 March 2008 14:00 (seventeen years ago)
when you go presitge do you get to keep the weapon mods that you've earned, ie. the red dots, etc?
― Will M., Friday, 28 March 2008 16:19 (seventeen years ago)
slocki - CoD4 on the ps3
Will - I think when you restart in prestige everything gets reset, so you have to start over on the unlocks. I'm only up to level 41 though - not sure if I'll make it all the way to 55...
By the way, lately I've switched from the red dot to the silencer and it has really helped my k/d ratio since with a silencer you don't show up on radar. I had a game last night where i got 18 kills and only got killed 3 times
― Jeff LeVine, Friday, 28 March 2008 16:41 (seventeen years ago)
I use the UAV Jammer perk to kill the radar cos I'm useless without the red dot.
― czn, Friday, 28 March 2008 16:59 (seventeen years ago)
My XBL gamertag is fugexlac, but I am not on now since I am at work. I'll keep an eye peeled, though.
When you do prestige you lose everything that you unlocked and all the challenges are reset. It's actually not so bad b/c I found I improved a ton once I was back to using the AK with just the regular sights. Rediscovering the grenade launcher was great, too.
― dan m, Friday, 28 March 2008 18:02 (seventeen years ago)
My favorite deathmatch gear:
M4 w/ silencer Desert Eagle Stun grenade 3 frag grenade pack Stopping Power Extreme Conditioning
― dan m, Friday, 28 March 2008 18:04 (seventeen years ago)
i think this game is great by the way. both multiplayer and campaign. the campaign satisfies my criteria for great game design: create a world/style of gameplay/set of rules that are fun to play and keep innovating within that basic framework, so you're almost creating new games within the game.
― s1ocki, Friday, 28 March 2008 18:12 (seventeen years ago)
the way it sets up matches is a little goofy tho. i was just playing team deathmatch and my team was mixed bag of dudes from levels like 6-36 and the other team was ALL 55s!!!!
― s1ocki, Friday, 28 March 2008 20:12 (seventeen years ago)
i thought you were chachee dan m?
― Will M., Friday, 28 March 2008 20:29 (seventeen years ago)
Yeah that was when I was sharing an account with my housemate. I've got my own now due partially to his 360 getting hosed for the 3rd time.
― dan m, Friday, 28 March 2008 20:31 (seventeen years ago)
jeff if you want to play with a noob hit me up next time you're online.
― s1ocki, Friday, 28 March 2008 21:52 (seventeen years ago)
Played a ton of multiplayer over the weekend (mostly big team battles)! Raised my k/d ratio 7% - though it's still awful - so much ground to make up from when I first was playing.
― Jeff LeVine, Monday, 31 March 2008 17:41 (seventeen years ago)
i am now kicking ass at this game
i'm still at level like 20 or something but i'm doing really well!!
― s1ocki, Monday, 31 March 2008 18:14 (seventeen years ago)
my brother plays this 24-7
― stevie, Monday, 31 March 2008 18:51 (seventeen years ago)
slocki - I saw you had an eleven kill streak (my best is still only ten)! I love the feeling in this game when you get on those streaks & you feel untouchable - you get the airstrike and boom, you call in a helicopter. I saw a sick video on youtube where some guy got a sixty something killstreak - which is absurd.
― Jeff LeVine, Monday, 31 March 2008 19:17 (seventeen years ago)
that's insane!
GOD it's fun!! great learning curve. at first i was despondent and then i slowly got better and better and now i LOVE it
― s1ocki, Monday, 31 March 2008 21:33 (seventeen years ago)
totally
the levelling aspect to it is so fun, and totally encourages "just one more game"-ism
sucks when you rank up and you get back to the match report screen and it says:
"NEW challenges"
wtf!!
― czn, Monday, 31 March 2008 22:17 (seventeen years ago)
yeeee something was wrong with my connection tonight. sorry about the dropped games jeff.
― s1ocki, Tuesday, 1 April 2008 04:44 (seventeen years ago)
No problem - I wasn't sure what it was - I looked up and all I saw was a line of red dots! Could have been my fault for all I know - the mysteries of the internet.
Anyhow just had one of those freakish games where I seemed to be in the right place at the right time, 25 kills to 6 deaths. That was a good feeling after a bunch of kind of routine games tonight where I kept coming up even.
Working my way through the "humilation" challenges now - that's some funny stuff.
― Jeff LeVine, Tuesday, 1 April 2008 06:02 (seventeen years ago)
awesome!
after all my preening and boasting last night was a pretty off night. probably cuz i had a friend over who could witness my humiliation :(
― s1ocki, Tuesday, 1 April 2008 14:15 (seventeen years ago)
I've been playing "hardcore" games lately. GAME CHANGER.

Ppl in there are really good, it can be fucking frustrating.
― dan m, Tuesday, 1 April 2008 17:04 (seventeen years ago)
what's the deal with prestige mode
― s1ocki, Tuesday, 1 April 2008 20:12 (seventeen years ago)
That's where you trade in all your guns and perks for a little badge next to your name and start from the beginning.
― antexit, Tuesday, 1 April 2008 20:14 (seventeen years ago)
ahh, much like the world's most prestigious soldiers.
― s1ocki, Tuesday, 1 April 2008 22:59 (seventeen years ago)
old soldiers never die, they just get prestige.
― El Tomboto, Tuesday, 1 April 2008 23:05 (seventeen years ago)

I guess it's 3 million people trying to DL it at once.
― antexit, Friday, 4 April 2008 21:43 (seventeen years ago)
i got the patch but no maps
― czn, Friday, 4 April 2008 21:47 (seventeen years ago)
Have been playing hardcore almost exclusively for a week. Went back to normal modes today, rubbish. It feels like an arcade games. Hardcore ftw!!
― czn, Saturday, 5 April 2008 18:36 (seventeen years ago)
Yeah, hardcore really is pretty good except when some jerk decides to use the martyr perk, gets domed, and his grenade kills his whole team.
I bought the new maps. One is just a reskinning of a COD2 map (lol get a life, me) and I haven't seen the one called "Killhouse" yet. They're pretty good, though, and you get double XP for playing them this weekend. "Creek" is my favorite.
― dan m, Sunday, 6 April 2008 15:13 (seventeen years ago)
czn, I got booted off the TV by my roommate wanting to watch Barcelona. We should play again sometime. A "clan ilx" game would be fun, too.
― dan m, Sunday, 6 April 2008 22:04 (seventeen years ago)
ilx clan must happen. in fact i saw czn/dan/antexit all online the other day and was so tempted to invite all to a party, but i was too lazy to put the game in and take out vegas 2.
― Will M., Monday, 7 April 2008 15:49 (seventeen years ago)
I am changing my clan tag to ILX right now.
― antexit, Monday, 7 April 2008 16:01 (seventeen years ago)
I normally have clan tag "ILx" but I change it about between "CMYK", "I am" and "WWJD".
― czn, Monday, 7 April 2008 16:16 (seventeen years ago)
I usually also have ILX but occasionally change it to "not" or "HiIm"
― Will M., Monday, 7 April 2008 18:42 (seventeen years ago)
What's up with this Killhouse map? Is it not active yet, or what?
― antexit, Monday, 7 April 2008 21:48 (seventeen years ago)
play hardcore lameo
― czn, Monday, 7 April 2008 22:06 (seventeen years ago)
: )
I just saw you in team deathmatch dozen! Think I popped you a couple times too!
― antexit, Monday, 7 April 2008 22:10 (seventeen years ago)
Cozen I mean. Stupid iphone corrective type.
― antexit, Monday, 7 April 2008 22:12 (seventeen years ago)
yeah thats what I'm saying! you shd play hardcore it's much better!!!
― czn, Monday, 7 April 2008 22:16 (seventeen years ago)
sorry dude think we lost each other there :/
― czn, Monday, 7 April 2008 22:47 (seventeen years ago)
You're right about hardcore, though. You actually have to work with your teammates, huh? As opposed to just running around doing whatever the fuck.
― antexit, Tuesday, 8 April 2008 10:18 (seventeen years ago)
I am definitely a big sucker and bought into the new map pack. At least I have been getting double XP to make up for the slightly exorbitant price.
I would be down for some (semi?) organized ILX team play; if I'm not on your friends list (BigGlim), add me up :) I have tried a bit of hardcore but I have not been super-enthused so far on account of getting shot by both a) the other team and b) my own team reasonably frequently.
― Matt D, Tuesday, 8 April 2008 13:53 (seventeen years ago)
Hardcore is great if people play at least a little cooperatively, but playing it like regular team deathmatch w/o the HUD and with extra damage is just terrible.
― dan m, Tuesday, 8 April 2008 18:14 (seventeen years ago)
Finally got this yesterday, and got the new maps so the double xp has helped me get up to level 15 or somewhere thereabouts pretty quickly.
I don't have a headset/microphone. I assume that is important for hardcore?
― Gukbe, Tuesday, 8 April 2008 18:48 (seventeen years ago)
haha you got to level 15 in one day? Yes, the headset is important for hardcore, but I find not really otherwise unless you're playing with a buddy you want to chat or coordinate attacks with.
― antexit, Tuesday, 8 April 2008 18:58 (seventeen years ago)
if you do all the ten prestige modes, do you then get to use all perks and all guns at the one time??
― czn, Tuesday, 8 April 2008 21:42 (seventeen years ago)
there are 10 prestige modes? like you have to level up to 55 ten times? good god.
― s1ocki, Tuesday, 8 April 2008 23:03 (seventeen years ago)
at level 22 now. my friend is always trying to be a sniper, and it never works out very well.
― Gukbe, Wednesday, 9 April 2008 01:46 (seventeen years ago)
Unless you're steady enough to consistently get headshots on moving targets, I found that trying to be a sniper is a recipe for frustration until you get the Stopping Power perk, which gives you a one-shot kill if you hit anywhere in the chest area.
― antexit, Wednesday, 9 April 2008 09:13 (seventeen years ago)
this game/xbox live + headset is enough to really harsh a dude's buzz for the usa
xpost
otoh, and not to rattle on, it's probably a bit too easy to snipe on hardcore mode once you have the radar jammer and silence perks (esp. on creek)
I got a nice 11/0 run going last night and finished the game 17/3, which must rate amongst my best performances… not that any of tht shit matters, but…
played some of killhouse with fugex4lc too; nice map, shame it isn't in the rotation wtf
also - how is it going to work when the put the variety maps onto the normal rotations??
― czn, Wednesday, 9 April 2008 10:45 (seventeen years ago)
I've been curious about that too. I assume everybody who hasn't bought the maps will be kicked from the playlists when they come up. Since I don't plan to buy them, if that starts happening a lot, I see CoD 4 slipping out of my rotation - which is okay anyway, since the next wave of games I'm really looking forward to is about to start coming out, and I probably won't have the time for CoD 4 anymore anyway.
― Jeff LeVine, Wednesday, 9 April 2008 15:35 (seventeen years ago)
czn - I never plug in a headset. NEVER! And as soon as the game starts I usually hit mute on the one or two talking players - much more pleasant experience that way (not so many other people miked up on the ps3 usually, maybe since the system doesn't include a mike).
Also, last night I got the "humiliation" achievement for killing a guy, picking up his gun and then killing him again with it :)
― Jeff LeVine, Wednesday, 9 April 2008 15:50 (seventeen years ago)
OTM, and I live in the USA! Seriously, so many idiots it makes my head spin sometimes.
When there were new maps in previous Call of Duties it never really seemed to make a difference if you didn't have them, the system would only hook you up with games on the maps you already had.
On the humiliation side, I got TWO double RPG kills last night. The tunnel in Creek makes it super easy.
― dan m, Wednesday, 9 April 2008 15:55 (seventeen years ago)
i remember getting kicked out of gears of war sessions when i didn't have the new maps.
I think the problem comes when you're in the same lobby with the same host for a run of games.
Also, maybe it's because I don't have the headset and can't hear as much of the chatter, but the blathering that comes through the tv speakers hasn't been nearly as bad as I remember it from the last time I played xboxlive (which was about 10 months ago).
― Gukbe, Wednesday, 9 April 2008 16:17 (seventeen years ago)
Played a match Saturday with 14 kills to 1 death on Bog/Domination (with a 13 kill streak). Doubt I can top that :)
― Jeff LeVine, Monday, 14 April 2008 17:14 (seventeen years ago)
One time on my roomate's old account I got 18 w/o dying. That was a huge feat of camping.
― dan m, Monday, 14 April 2008 17:16 (seventeen years ago)
I got 19/3 with a 14 kill streak. W00t!!
― czn, Monday, 14 April 2008 18:04 (seventeen years ago)
i love this game so much
― s1ocki, Tuesday, 15 April 2008 16:30 (seventeen years ago)
its too addictive!!!
― czn, Tuesday, 15 April 2008 16:36 (seventeen years ago)
Took it back to blockbuster, and am now trying to convince my roommate to buy it. It's only 35 bucks on amazon, after all.
― Gukbe, Tuesday, 15 April 2008 17:03 (seventeen years ago)
9 million downloaded the new maps at $10 a pop
WOWEE
― czn, Friday, 18 April 2008 15:35 (seventeen years ago)
oh, sorry
9 million have bought the game, only (!) 1 million downloaded the maps
― czn, Friday, 18 April 2008 15:36 (seventeen years ago)
Last night I went 25-3 in a free-for-all game o_O ... man I love camping sometimes.
― dan m, Friday, 18 April 2008 17:09 (seventeen years ago)
So when does the double xp thing start on the ps3 (you don't have to buy the new maps right)? If a certain anticipated game doesn't magically show up early, maybe I'll try to make the final push to 55 in a (futile?) effort to distract myself this weekend
― Jeff LeVine, Thursday, 24 April 2008 23:19 (seventeen years ago)
already started!
― s1ocki, Friday, 25 April 2008 14:53 (seventeen years ago)
double is only for kills/assists, not end-of-game bonus / challenges.
― s1ocki, Friday, 25 April 2008 14:54 (seventeen years ago)
So long, COD4. It was nice hanging out for awhile, but I just feel like I have to move on...
― antexit, Friday, 25 April 2008 14:55 (seventeen years ago)
I guess you had to buy the maps to get the double xp?
I don't know if people who play on Sundays are better at this game or what, but I had some of the worst games today. At least once I got stuck against a group that I'm pretty sure was cheating or using some kind of aimbots, because I never got killed so much in a game, even when I was at level 1
― Jeff LeVine, Monday, 28 April 2008 02:31 (seventeen years ago)
there were a couple of INSANE groups floating around.
my theory is just that they were all on headsets and coordinated well. i always think that in team deathmatch if ppl actually talked and plotted out strategies you could totally pwn any group of randomly thrown-together players.
― s1ocki, Monday, 28 April 2008 15:23 (seventeen years ago)
right - whenever I see there's four or so players with the same clan tag on the other team, it's like, get ready to have your ass kicked. More power to them though - the ones who work at getting really good & planning strategy - no way i could devote that much effort to the game. Although frightfully I see I've been playing CoD4 for over 50 hours already!
There is some hack stuff you can do with the ps3 (search youtube) - I don't know if more of that has been figured out and posted somewhere and is going around, but I definitely felt like a couple games I played in yesterday were suspicious. One game (ended by the host) where i was killed 9 times in a game that maybe lasted a minute and a half and another game where I was killed 30+ times, where over and over again I seemed to be getting killed after being shot just once or twice.
― Jeff LeVine, Monday, 28 April 2008 16:56 (seventeen years ago)
Finally finished the single player campaign. I guess it was okay - I'm less down on it now that it's over, even though it's kind of by the numbers. I guess my main story complaint would be why bother having a bunch of different characters if there's no real character development? The main action complaint would be I just don't understand why the constantly re-spawning enemies. It would be so much better if "clearing" and area wasn't simply pushing your way past the invisible line that turns off enemies from re-appearing. I'm glad I decided to watch past the credits - really enjoyed that final two minute mission (also the closing credit rap).
It seems like multiplayer has gotten a lot more challenging - I think maybe all the more casual players moved over to GTA - very few easy kills left.
― Jeff LeVine, Sunday, 25 May 2008 00:42 (seventeen years ago)
i think the single player campaign is great. if any game is like a movie, it's this, not GTA: narrative that pushes you along with no choices, multiple points of view, really cinematic sequences that break or at least play with the form.
and i actually like the enemy respawning. for one, it balances the fact that you don't have a power bar and could theoretically hang back and take out enemies one by one and let your health recharge. also it's way more immersive and makes it feel like you're really in a war zone; in a situation that ONE DUDE or one dude and his friends couldn't completely mop up by themselves.
― s1ocki, Sunday, 25 May 2008 17:32 (seventeen years ago)
why bother having a bunch of different characters if there's no real character development
I think this is one of the most interesting narrative choices, personally-- you have to get close to the character because your pass/fail status hinges on their survival, but they're still hardly more than "just a soldier"-- which is also why it's awesome at the end, because you EXPECT to learn more about them and then you find out, well, you won't.
― Will M., Sunday, 25 May 2008 22:48 (seventeen years ago)
main characters almost never go through ANY meaningful development in video games because they're such ciphers. which is why i think it's smart that this game dispenses with that idea.
― s1ocki, Monday, 26 May 2008 03:04 (seventeen years ago)
I guess I didn't mean to say that I thought the game should have had more character development, just that I didn't get the reason to have different characters that you played & in theory were supposed to care about, when you couldn't really tell the difference between one character you were playing and the next.
― Jeff LeVine, Tuesday, 27 May 2008 17:19 (seventeen years ago)
well how great was it that they actually kill off one of the "main" characters tho??
― s1ocki, Wednesday, 28 May 2008 06:11 (seventeen years ago)
That's the thing - I felt nothing. What was the difference between playing that character and the character at the end of the game? Was exactly the same - couldn't tell or feel a difference so what's the point? Whole game should have just been arcade mode
― Jeff LeVine, Wednesday, 28 May 2008 16:02 (seventeen years ago)
i thought it was a great surprise!
― s1ocki, Wednesday, 28 May 2008 17:32 (seventeen years ago)

― czn, Thursday, 5 June 2008 09:38 (seventeen years ago)

I played on Killhouse last night.
― Jarlrmai, Thursday, 5 June 2008 16:05 (seventeen years ago)
I love this game but I'm astonishingly bad at it online. After playing online for a few days I've killed a grand total of 2 people.
― nate woolls, Monday, 9 June 2008 09:56 (seventeen years ago)
be persistent. there is a definite learning curve. soon you'll be fraggin with the best.

anyone for some hardcore pistols-only?
― czn, Monday, 23 June 2008 22:26 (seventeen years ago)
I prestiged a few months ago and then only got up to about level 30 and stopped playing it for a while when I got GTA. Went back to it a week or so ago and I just stunk too much after neglecting it for so long to enjoy it. Have gone back to Pro Evo 6, scoring corners with Beckham is awesome.
― jim, Monday, 23 June 2008 22:34 (seventeen years ago)
This game is also awesome and I want to get back into it but I tend to need to keep in practice to be any good at FPSs and I can't really be bothered at the moment.
― jim, Monday, 23 June 2008 22:35 (seventeen years ago)
I got 18 kills last night in one game only using my pistol... no one else was having the "pistols only" lark
the pistol is pretty strong in hardcore
― czn, Tuesday, 24 June 2008 09:38 (seventeen years ago)
Any PS3 players here I can add as friends, for an online game sometime?

Krangor = me
― s1ocki, Wednesday, 25 June 2008 04:34 (seventeen years ago)
I'm very tempted to get this now that I'm playing less of gTA4, but I'll rarely play online. Is it still a good solo game ?
― Ste, Wednesday, 25 June 2008 09:34 (seventeen years ago)
opinions vary
I think the arcade mode, unlocked when you complete it, is amazing! you can actually tell when you've killed someone, which is useful
+50 +10 +20 +20 +200 lol
― czn, Wednesday, 25 June 2008 09:52 (seventeen years ago)
i think the solo mode is amazing... best game in years
― s1ocki, Wednesday, 25 June 2008 13:45 (seventeen years ago)
Except for a couple of missions, I thought the solo mode was pretty standard stuff... not terribly different from the other Call of Duty / Medal of Honor type games except with a modern touch. It's also rather short (just six to eight hours long on regular difficulty, I think). The meat of the game is definitely in the multiplayer - which is really easy to get sucked into. Arcade mode is more fun than story mode, but you have to beat story mode first to unlock it.
Anyhow, if you're not going to play multi, I don't think the game is worth sixty bucks, but would make a fine rental.
― Jeff LeVine, Wednesday, 25 June 2008 14:18 (seventeen years ago)
i disagree. i mean i agree the multi is amazing but i think the story mode is smarter & more engaging than almost any other FPS i've played since the half-life games.
― s1ocki, Wednesday, 25 June 2008 15:41 (seventeen years ago)
I totally agree, despite the rather short length I felt it pretty consistently was as good as Half-Life 2, just in different ways.
― Will M., Wednesday, 25 June 2008 15:56 (seventeen years ago)
That fcking bit where you have to hide on the ground as a sniper... so cool. I was so freaked out. (although I didn't actually even fail on my first try, I thought maybe it was easy, apparently not though, a bunch of people had issues).
But yeah... can't play the multi anymore. I lost the skill and everyone's so good I can't get it back.
― Will M., Wednesday, 25 June 2008 15:57 (seventeen years ago)
plus the black & white gunner level... the nuclear thing... so absorbing, such great smart storytelling.
― s1ocki, Wednesday, 25 June 2008 16:05 (seventeen years ago)
I tried the multi again last week after taking a long break and was similarly annihilated. It almost seems to be a console game phenomenon; to compare, I can go play a few rounds of Counterstrike or TF2 on my PC even now and probably do ok but if I get into a multiplayer console game a few months after the release everyone appears to be a me - killing badass. Why do you think this occurs? Do all the more casual players move on to other games in a shorter period of time? Do more console players stick to a single multiplayer title for their regular fix? It's an interesting contrast between the platforms.
― Matt D, Wednesday, 25 June 2008 16:22 (seventeen years ago)
I think the controls for PC shooters are just way more intuitive, it's easy to get a "feel" for it in a few seconds. getting used to console controls again, esp. after switching to another FPS for a while, is MURDER to get back into.
― Will M., Wednesday, 25 June 2008 16:50 (seventeen years ago)
I would agree with you there. All the PC shooters pretty much have the same control set up, while on console there just isn't a standard way to do things yet. I do also think some of the more casual players of CoD 4 have moved on to GTA and elsewhere and most of what's left are the hardcore folks who have been playing the same game hours and hours a week for six months - I definitely found easy kills few and far between the last couple time I picked up the game post-GTA. Also TF2 is pretty casual friendly as teamwork is so important - the difference between a really skilled player and a casual one is much less pronounced - though the slow edition of weapon perks is starting to change that a bit.
― Jeff LeVine, Wednesday, 25 June 2008 17:16 (seventeen years ago)
addition, damn
― Jeff LeVine, Wednesday, 25 June 2008 17:26 (seventeen years ago)
When in doubt, camp, because that's what the majority of people killing you repeatedly are doing.
― dan m, Wednesday, 25 June 2008 18:31 (seventeen years ago)
Also czn I will play pistols-only whenever. Hardcore mode makes choosing the pistol easy because "power" does not factor into the equation as much as "holds the most bullets".
― dan m, Wednesday, 25 June 2008 18:33 (seventeen years ago)
also, I <3 the bomb squad perk on hc s&d... essential
― czn, Wednesday, 25 June 2008 18:58 (seventeen years ago)
^^^Especially if you're going after one of the campers described above. Silencer and/or uav jammer too.

― dan m, Thursday, 24 July 2008 21:20 (seventeen years ago)
I need to start playing non team deathmatch modes
― s1ocki, Friday, 25 July 2008 03:44 (seventeen years ago)
Branching out is good. I can't play Search & Destroy for very long before it frustrates the living shit out of me. I'm a big fan of the free-for-all deathmatch, and when you have people to work with the tactical games are really fun.
― dan m, Friday, 25 July 2008 15:05 (seventeen years ago)
hardcore s&d is what a lot of really good players seem to play but as dan says its very frustrating because the nature of the game encourages camping; you need to move at a snail's pace most of the time, checking your corners
I really like sabotage but it can suffer from people just playing it to boost their stats; it's timed rather than based on points so ppl can score upwards of 60kills a game, which is good for boosting your guns

I don't think I'll ever get bored of this game.
― nate woolls, Wednesday, 6 August 2008 22:31 (seventeen years ago)
I had a fantastic kill streak of 13 yesterday, with a sniper rifle from the south deck of the Wetwork boat. I got one guy about 6 times in a row, he must've been going fucking nuts.
So glad I stuck with this game after my initial post 2 months ago.
― nate woolls, Thursday, 7 August 2008 09:22 (seventeen years ago)
it's addictive isn't it? : (
― webinar, Thursday, 7 August 2008 09:39 (seventeen years ago)
It's incredibly addictive. It goes on whenever I've got 15 minutes spare.
Something I discovered last night though - ACOG sights fucking ruin sniper rifles.
― nate woolls, Thursday, 7 August 2008 09:45 (seventeen years ago)
I know - I couldn't hit a cow when I tried the ACOG on a sniper... ??
― webinar, Thursday, 7 August 2008 09:54 (seventeen years ago)
apparently hardcore HQ is good to be released now and they're just testing the others and waiting for another one to be solid before seeding them to the public
― webinar, Thursday, 7 August 2008 10:17 (seventeen years ago)
I should play some of the other game modes more often, I just stick to Team Deathmatches 99% of the time. I had a quick go at Domination(?) last night but couldn't figure out what the hell I was supposed to be doing.
― nate woolls, Thursday, 7 August 2008 10:21 (seventeen years ago)
Some people swear by the ACOG on the M40, don't know why.
― dan m, Thursday, 7 August 2008 18:38 (seventeen years ago)
I'm obsessed with my kill ratio to the point where I won't play anything other than team deathmatch. I wish I could get over this obsession. When I try playing anything else, I end up getting killed time and time again when I charge some objective and am sniped by some asshole playing defense or some other guy hiding in the shadows. Maybe if I get the ratio up to 1/1, I'll start playing other games.
― gozer, Thursday, 7 August 2008 19:38 (seventeen years ago)
I also suck at close quarters at this point (have logged five hours so far, just got the game). I like the more open levels where I can scope my M16 and roam around plucking people off. In the close quarters levels (the ship and the one where you're inside that large building with all the hallways) should I just try shooting from the hip or charging and knifing somebody?
― gozer, Thursday, 7 August 2008 19:43 (seventeen years ago)
Try the MP5 or one of the LMGs.
― dan m, Thursday, 7 August 2008 21:05 (seventeen years ago)
sniped by some asshole playing defense or some other guy hiding in the shadows
See, I don't see anything wrong with "playing defense" or "camping". I enjoy the challenge of killing someone who's holed up in a building somewhere as much as I enjoy hiding myself away and picking people off from 200m away. Obviously you have to use different fighting techniques with different maps. Crossfire and Pipeline are great for sniping; Crash, Bog and Showdown are great for assault rifles and LMG's; Wetwork is good for shotguns and submachine guns, and as I found out the other night, sniper rifles.
― nate woolls, Friday, 8 August 2008 08:17 (seventeen years ago)
ha there's totally nothing wrong with it, the calls for 'camper!' are just the way people react when they're 'outgunned'.
ignore their cries Nate. amen brother.
― Ste, Friday, 8 August 2008 08:46 (seventeen years ago)
they're maybe introducing hardcore lite (i.e. all hardcore rules exc. friendly fire disabled) game modes
http://www.fourzerotwo.com/2008/08/07/team-killers-are-lame/#respond
― cozwn, Friday, 8 August 2008 15:33 (seventeen years ago)
I know it's only an option but I think I'd continue to play with friendly fire on - for the few rare times some idiot decides to bazooka the whole team at the beginning of the game, you get a better more careful game - it would ruin the dynamics of hardcore to disable friendly-fire... I think the "friendly fire will not be tolerated" system they have in place currently is quite effective
― cozwn, Friday, 8 August 2008 15:37 (seventeen years ago)
I wish you could vote to kick people, although I'm sure it would be abused.
― dan m, Friday, 8 August 2008 15:51 (seventeen years ago)
yeah, you can vote to kick people on that GRID game and we inadvertantly kick people quite often on it - it starts out a bit of a laugh to 'scare' the person (usu. a friend) and then they're gone
woops
― cozwn, Friday, 8 August 2008 15:53 (seventeen years ago)
also, in rooms with clans they already abuse their numbers to vote maps, so I can see the potential for some pretty pernicious kicking
I meant asshole in the fact that I keep getting killed by people playing defense, not as is in I think it's wrong. I hide out in domination a lot.

Hardcore Headquarters - No Patch Required
Testing is completed for Hardcore HQ. This playlist has standard HQ rules w/ Hardcore Settings. Limited HUD, Increased Bullet Damage, and Friendly Fire Enabled.
Hardcore Ricochet Playlist - Currently Testing
We’re currently testing this playlist now to see if a patch will be required for it or not. We should know soon. This is the No Teamkilling playlist. Any damage a teamkiller attempts to do to their team mates is reflected onto themselves only. Therefore, if they attempt to shoot an RPG into the ground at the beginning of the match; the only person who will die, is the Teamkiller. This eliminates the fear of being shot in the back by some asshole, but still encourages players to play tactically and not throw random nades, because if you accidentally hit a teammate, you’re only going to end up killing yourself and they’ll go unharmed. No Teamkilling, No Random Nades. This playlist will include the variant for Hardcore Teamdeathmatch, Hardcore Search and Destroy, and Hardcore HQ.
Sudden Death Sabotage - Currently Testing
Sabotage with no respawns. Fast-paced and intense Sabotage. No more hiding with the bomb until time runs out for sudden death. Increased XP per kills to encourage Team Deathmatch mentality. Defend your objective, while attempting to secure the bomb and plant on theirs. Once you’re dead, you’re dead. No second chances. We’re currently testing to see if this can be implemented without a patch.
Second Chance Search and Destroy - Currently Testing
Search and Destroy with 1 respawn each. This completely revamps your Search and Destroy tactics. No longer will lucky frag or well-placed claymore end your chance of victory. Each player has 1 respawn, creating longer more thoughout attack / defend strategies. Eliminate enemy players, and cut off their reinforcements while you defuse.
——–
If all these get past Quality Assurance (Test) with zero bugs, then we’ll be able to implement these four new playlists rather quickly (once QA and Localization is finished). In addition, we plan on adding Killhouse to more playlists and adjusting the amount of XP you get in certain playlists. (i.e. double XP in hardcore and new playlists).
Hit the jump for the playlists we’d like to do, but would require some code work to implement.
The following gametypes would require code support in order to implement. Which means we’d have to patch. Now anytime you require a patch that’s a much lengthier process than just doing a playlist update because it requires code work, very extensive QA both internally, at Activision, and at Microsoft / Sony. Which is why we want to attempt to get the playlist updates ABOVE out first, and then see what our options are with the ones BELOW. The ones which require additional support include:
Bare-Bones Team Deathmatch - Patch Required
Team Deathmatch with no perks and no air support. Problem: Slot 1 Perks Glitch
Hardcore Free for All - Patch Required
Free For All with Hardcore Settings. Problem: UAV glitch
Team Elimination (Last Man Standing) - Patch Required
3 round Team Deathmatch w/ no respawns. Switch sides each round. Problem: Round Switch Glitch
Multi-Bomb Search and Destroy - Patch Required
Search and Destroy but all attackers spawn with a bomb. Problem: Planting Glitch

xp I'd probably wear it if it didn't have the Infinity Ward logo.
― dan m, Wednesday, 27 August 2008 18:32 (seventeen years ago)
I just got really disgusted with myself for saying that.
i just played a bit of this, will play more after work.
kept throwing grenades instead of shooting, too used to gta4 trigger on R2
and wow count the cheesy catchphrases from aliens and predator movies!
― Ste, Thursday, 28 August 2008 13:05 (seventeen years ago)
still not played much of this, fell asleep last night. But just digged into the multiplayer, got my arse kicked on the first game but then came 3rd the second time around - good use of the flash bang thanks to much CS training.
i have to turn the audibles off because people moaning about campers is gets really tiresome. War is all about deceit people!
Single player so far has been a bit meh, but still a good game. The gun control and feel is better than any FPS I've ever played but the level structures just seem really uncreative.
― Ste, Friday, 29 August 2008 12:35 (seventeen years ago)
ste, you should use the stun grenades over the flashes - not least because they give you a hit indicator (your cursor flashes and pad vibrates slightly) when they stun someone. this way you can tell if there's someone in the room you throw it into
― cozwn, Friday, 29 August 2008 12:55 (seventeen years ago)
we need more maps now pls
― cozwn, Friday, 29 August 2008 12:56 (seventeen years ago)
where are my stun grenades ?! and lol i don't have a vibrating pad, cursed sony controls
when will i get to play around in pripyat? i saw it on the opening scene and shouted IVE BEEN THERE!
― Ste, Friday, 29 August 2008 13:33 (seventeen years ago)
Pripyat is about 2-thirds of the way through the single player game, and it's one of the best multiplayer maps called Bloc.
― nate woolls, Friday, 29 August 2008 13:40 (seventeen years ago)
lol at no vibration
stun grenades: choose from secondary grenades in 'create a class'
alternatively, use smoke but um don't run THROUGH the smoke or you will die (in a hail of bullets and grenades)
― cozwn, Friday, 29 August 2008 15:23 (seventeen years ago)
i have lots to learn
am enjoying the current level on single mode now, protecting the tank.
― Ste, Friday, 29 August 2008 15:42 (seventeen years ago)
what is smoke good for? they cant see but you can't either!
― s1ocki, Friday, 29 August 2008 19:09 (seventeen years ago)
good to use as a 'shield' for getting from A to B, esp. on hardcore search and destroy

I should play some S&D but it just makes me so angry.
The other day I was semi-drunk and started calling ppl out on all the racist bigoted stuff they say, which only served to send the teenagers into a rage, which made them repeatedly storm the house I was hiding in and resulted in me getting 30+ kills for like 5 games in a row.

game feels... weird; familiar and alien at the same time
it doesn't feel as solid, fast, and crunchy as CoD4 does; the guns, grenades, your little dude, it all somehow feels really light and airy
I mean, I know it's running on the CoD4 engine but it seriously feels like the CoD2 engine, a bit of a regression really... it's not as tactile and human; little things like the way your guys bounds when he runs in CoD4 don't seem to have carried over
I dunno; I ranked all the way up to level 10 (there's 11 levels in the beta so far) but I'm not digging it nearly as much as CoD4, which for me was almost instant love
I think half of it is I'm used to hardcore and I hate normal; so, we'll see but so far this is a definite pass up for me
I'll be buying fallout 3, unless something serious changes betw. now and the end of the beta
― STINKING CORPSE (cozwn), Saturday, 11 October 2008 00:02 (seventeen years ago)
also: in the third person (on kill-cam or watching your team-mates) the dudes are totally animated like the CoD2 engine and not CoD4
I think treyarch are lying that they used the new engine, fr'reals
― STINKING CORPSE (cozwn), Saturday, 11 October 2008 01:06 (seventeen years ago)
I've only played for about thirty minutes. I don't think it's bad, just maybe kind of average. It does feel slower and heavier to me than what I'm used to. The dogs are a good idea, but their animation kind of sucks - it's just not fluid enough & kind of jerky, so it makes them kind of hard to shoot off (I also hated the dog parts in the CoD4 single player, but it seems a little clunkier here). They are scary though. I an curious about the single player. Yeah, right now, I wouldn't say I'm being convinced to run out and buy this next month or anything.

the server seems to be under strain at the mo; loool
UPDATE - At around 15.30 this head post will provide a link. Please click it to allow access.
This thread will be the catchall for all questions related to the beta.
(c/p'd from another thread)
------------
a) THERE´S NO CONFIRMED HOUR FOR THE START OF THE GIVEAWAY BUT IT WON´T BE BEFORE BEFORE 15.30 GMT (PM)
The giveaway will start at an unspecified time "later today". Most probably after 15.30 GMT to 18.30 GMT. Make of this what you will, but likely this morning won't be it.
At 9.45 GMT the Editor has stated - "THE GIVEAWAY HASN'T STARTED YET AND WON'T BE STARTING IN THE NEXT 6 HOURS."
b) YOU´LL NEED TO PRESS A BUTTON ON THE GIVEAWAY PAGE WHICH WILL BE ON THE FRONT PAGE OF THE SITE WHEN IT'S UP ON MONDAY.
The page won't be up until the keys are available, and the front page of Eurogamer will have a news story about it, pinned above the others, on the right. Click on it to read the story, then click the link to the page where the giveaway is taking place. The amount of keys left will also be displayed on this page.
There is the chance the giveaway page IS the news story, but nobody will know until that goes up anyway!
This isn't the page - http://gamers.eurogamer.net/giveaways.php?id=27 - it's just a test page, nothing more, nothing less. So don't hammer F5 on it because nothing will happen.
c) THE KEY WILL BE DISPLAYED TO YOU AFTER YOU'VE CLICKED THE GIVEAWAY BUTTON. YOU CAN ONLY HAVE ONE.
Nobody on either the moderation staff or editorial side know when the keys will be sent. The servers have been bumped up so hopefully everything will hold up.
(this is a correction to the earlier report - staff have told me you'll have to take it from that page, no email or PM will be sent)
D) THERE WILL BE 20,000 KEYS, NO MORE, NO LESS - FIRST COME, FIRST SERVED.
So there's plenty of chance you'll get one. If not, better luck next time, or preorder. If you've got friends on the beta, and you don't get in, well - nothing EG can do.
E) PLEASE NOTE - YOU WILL NOT GET A KEY BY BEGGING ON THE FORUMS.
You will only piss off the mods and regulars and chances are you won't get one because of this. Opening new threads just for yourself to plead, for example, is severely frowned upon. Chances are you MAY be banned if you keep harassing the forum members... and in doing so lose your chance for another beta in future.
PARTICULARLY, don't believe ANYONE that says someone has a key. NOBODY DOES unless they declare it themselves on the forum. Do NOT PM ANYONE with regards to the beta, forum regulars, mods or staff. They won't have a key and you may lose your chance to get yours.
However...
E) USE THIS THREAD TO BEG IF YOU WANT TO RISK IT...
...and do so nicely... who knows, if you're not being an annoyance, you'll probably get one.
F) I'VE GOT MY KEY, HOW DO I USE IT?
Turn on the Xbox and make sure it's connected to XBL. Flick over to the Marketplace page and click "redeem code", and enter it there.
Your beta should then begin to download.
G) MY KEY DOESN'T WORK! I HATE EG!
Wait! It's not EG at fault. Contact Activision for help. EG really can't help you as they're only offering the keys, not the service.
With regards to US and global readers, I've just had it confirmed by the editorial staff that the Beta WILL WORK FOR YOU. So stop asking!
Let the games commence!

I've gone back to CoD 4, it's still the king. There's just a speed to it, and a smoothness, that's unlike any other console multiplayer game I've played. Especially the speed. I also finally started in on prestige mode. Played some old school free-for-all, which I don't think I'd ever played before, and discovered I like it a lot. It's probably a good mode to play at early ranks, since everybody starts out with the same kit (I think?). Had some really good games. For the first time ever, I had one helicopter flying around picking people off, and earned a second (which as soon as my first flew away, I was able to call in). Won that free-for-all game, racking up over 1,000 points with 25 kills to 5 deaths :)
For those of you who bought the map pack, was it worth it? Do those maps ever come up? Or how does that work?
― Jeff LeVine, Wednesday, 22 October 2008 06:59 (seventeen years ago)
Once you've downloaded the pack, 3 of the 4 maps come up with the same regularity as all the standard maps. You might've already seen this, but these descriptions come from the I Am Four Zero Two blog:
BroadcastIts size and alternating routes make “Broadcast” great for large team games. A large, multi-story television station with plenty of window vantage points creates the perfect setting for floor-to-floor combat. The station is surrounded by extensive outdoor areas consisting of a long parking lot, surrounding buildings with sniping hiding spots and side-rooftop access to the top and bottom floors of the television station.
CreekA large wide open village in the woods, “Creek” consists of heavy foliage, great for sniper cover: a deep ravine offers an excellent vantage point for ambushes; an underground cave offers an alternate evasion route; and various multi-floor houses populate a patchwork of connected farmland. This extensive open map is great for snipers with plenty of natural coverage consisting of rocks and trees. There are various routes for advancement from both high and low vantage points over and underneath the hillsides. Another great map for large team games.
ChinatownA modern revision of the classic Call of Duty “Carentan” map, “Chinatown” takes players to the foggy downtown district of a Chinatown. A night time setting, the cityscape is well lit by the full moon and the glow of brightly colored lanterns and neon lights from local businesses. This district offers a variety of open-street and interior settings, perfect for fire fights throughout the connected roads, courtyards, antique shops and markets within it. Great for all game types and players.
Killhouse“Killhouse” is an enclosed warehouse made of plywood structures, mock-ups and speed-run courses used for training, creating the right mix of obstacles for small team games or free-for-alls with a variety of soft and hard cover points spread throughout the entire ground level
They're all really good. Broadcast is a brilliant map, one of my favourites.
Killhouse, as far as I know, is only available in private party games. It's a great map to play one-on-one with a friend.
So yeah, I'd say they're worth the money. Aren't they on offer in the store at the moment?

I bought it but it was just before I stopped being obsessed with COD. They were all decent maps and seemed to come up as often as the older ones with the exception of Killhouse, as Jeff has said, which I've never played.

apparently apparently (according to edge) if you're looking for a cod4 replacement, the quantum of solace game's MP is essentially a cod4 map pack
it runs off the cod4 engine (altho a treyarchised vn with cover ughhhh) and has perks, prestige, etc.
will have to wait for the reviews but if this has hardcore and s&d then I will pick it up over cod:waw for the MP alone

the one thing that drives me crazy about this (AWESOME) game is that shooting down a helicopter gets you no XP.
i mean, COME ON. that should totally give you a bonus.
― s1ocki, Wednesday, 22 October 2008 13:59 (seventeen years ago)
I'm a little surprised they've yet to release a second map pack, considering how well the first one sold. I think I may give in and finally pick the pack up over the weekend though, as I could use a little more variety.
― Jeff LeVine, Wednesday, 22 October 2008 18:29 (seventeen years ago)
ya me too... selling maps must be like printing money, it can't cost them that much to design
― s1ocki, Wednesday, 22 October 2008 19:19 (seventeen years ago)
given how much time and effort goes into those maps (i heard an interview about the process, it takes months, and employs wireframers, level designers, playtesters, texture artists, marketing people, lawyers, etc) thne microsoft takes a big cut of your sales, and realistically not a huge number of the (admittedly large) install base are buying it... really, if anything they just PROTECT themselves by keeping the game relevant and ensuring less used copies going out (and therefore, people buying in have to get new copies). that's burnout paradise's strategy with it's free DLC-- make it really tempting to hang onto the game, driving up the used price and pushing more new copies.
― THERE IS NO VULCAN DEATH GRIP (Will M.), Wednesday, 22 October 2008 19:27 (seventeen years ago)
apparently it's process that's bogged it down, which is the same reason they've not released a patch for ages
it's frankly ridiculous really; halo 3 has been out for the same amount of time, has had 3 map packs, numerous patches, and it has a whole host of online stat tracking stuff for bungie to administer
I'm not sure of the comparative size or budgets but IW must be rolling in cash
considering the time it's taken them to push out the new playlists (3 months and counting) which is a lot less strenuous process I wouldn't start holding your breath just yet
― webinar, Wednesday, 22 October 2008 19:29 (seventeen years ago)
yeah, will's right, IW are picky perfectionists as well which doesn't help: they refuse to let those playlists out without testing them till they're properly balanced; I appreciate this but I think it's got a bit bogged down now
― webinar, Wednesday, 22 October 2008 19:30 (seventeen years ago)
"frankly ridiculous" might be a bit strong

i feel that's probably why burnout is available to buy as a download from the psn store now... one upside of digital distro (besides no production/shipping costs) is no used copies!
― s1ocki, Wednesday, 22 October 2008 20:05 (seventeen years ago)
looks like making a cod4 map is quite an iterative process, trying to get the look and balance right

Yeah honestly, if they actually did more digital downloads at decemt prices, I'd be okay with that. But if they sell a digital download at the same price as a boxed copy? Yeah right. I don't really resell my games but I'd at least like to own something with SOME value upon purchase.

I'm bad too - I'm play right now ... on my day off from work - man I should go out and get some fresh 13 degree air instead ... so addictive though - that's the point right? Team deathmatch all the way. (ZZ TOP, BOC, UFO, and Rush and a big ol spliff and 4 pack o' beamish providing the red dot sniper aiming assist) ...

yeah i can't either, but you know what, i'm gonna get out in front with some GAMES AS ART panty-bunching. this looks like too much. custom killstreak bonuses? player-controlled c-130s? wth is that a radar readout ON a weapon? how many primary weapons are there going to be? 85? how many of them will be totally useless? ans: all the ones unlocked before level 40, that's how many. the chances of being able to extract any fun value from this w/o devoting yr life to it look low ("lol stfu wots ur k/d like .30??")

Going back to CoD 4 after a solid month of MW2 is interesting. It does bring home how over the top they went with all the perks and challenges and different weapons and killstreaks and deathstreaks and everything. I remember CoD 4 orginally being pretty overwhelming, but definitely post-MW2 it feels really sparse. But I kinda like that more managable feeling too - more restrained. I wish they would surprise everybody and release a new CoD 4 map pack!

― everyone stop (dan m), Wednesday, 16 December 2009 06:08 (sixteen years ago)
I don't think I've ever managed to get a kill with those things (when I've tried them out), probably because I tend to move around the map too much and don't have the longest lives. I definitely forgot how annoying martyrdom can be - it takes you out of the flow to have to remember to move back from each enemy after you kill them instead of continuing forward. Seems like at least half the people left playing the game are using the perk now + the health bonus one. I still feel like these are the coward's perks (possibly getting a bonus kill for dying?). It's a much better option to use some of the stuff that upgrades your aggressive chances (like stopping power & steady aim), instead of going into a match feeling like you are going to die / lose / get beat out in a gun fight w/o extra health, and hope to eek out a few extra kills w/o actually doing anything good.

wait jeff are u posting from 2007?
― cozwn, Wednesday, 16 December 2009 18:07 (sixteen years ago)
It was the best of times, it was the worst of times.
I forgot to mention grenade spam - the reduction of grenade spam in in MW2 is probably its best improvement.
― Jeff LeVine, Wednesday, 16 December 2009 18:17 (sixteen years ago)
cozwn - you should be playing too! I've jumped over to the 360 version finally tonight, (couldn't stand my ps3 online problems any longer), and I see you're only in around 1,500,000th place on the kills leaderboard! The game feels really fresh to me again (though I'll probably go back to MW2 once it gets patched up).
I've been on a sub-machine gun rampage (won five free-for-alls in a row!). It just goes to show you, rank and unlocks don't mean shit in a lot of the modes if you pretty much know what you're doing. I was at level three or four when I started being at the top of matches against fifty-fives (not that I'm great).
The 360 version is definitely better than the ps3 version because of the persistent leaderboards (on the ps3 you can only see your friend's scores when they're online playing too), and vibration, which gives the game a more solid feel, I think. It's criminal that they never patched it into the ps3 version.
