this is the thread for E3, links to live streams, rumours, announcements, pics of the 3DS etc

Anyone going?

EZ Snappin, Thursday, 10 June 2010 22:20 (fifteen years ago)

I guess I'm most curious to see the 3DS and learn exactly what that's going to be.

Then, are the 360-slim redesign / price-cut rumors true? Is there any compelling software announced that would make Microsoft or Sony motion control peripherals worth plunking down the big money for?

Also, if all goes to plan, I should be down there on Thursday, which should be fun.

yeh can't wait to see what the 3DS is, especially after all the ridiculous rumours (3G! 360esque graphics!)
expect to see a smaller 360, maybe with natal built in? software showings for natal & move are going to be very telling about their respective chances of success.
software-wise i'm hoping to be surprised, nothing announced so far has particularly grabbed me. (BG&E2 plzplzplz)

zappi, Thursday, 10 June 2010 22:49 (fifteen years ago)

and how are they going to demo the 3DS onstage anyway???

zappi, Thursday, 10 June 2010 22:52 (fifteen years ago)

ooh one more thing to look forward to.

cozen, Monday, 14 June 2010 09:16 (fifteen years ago)

does your family have to look aryan to play with M$ kinect?

cozen, Monday, 14 June 2010 10:38 (fifteen years ago)

also dnw a bunch of wii knock-offs from rare

cozen, Monday, 14 June 2010 10:57 (fifteen years ago)

It's weird - is kinect a better name than natal (both horrible names imo)? games look like the games you can already play via the stupid 360 camera. this input method just seems really limiting in the type of games you can do - only the most limited wii-lites apparently. seems like it's going to be a hard sell to rope in that casual audience they're going after, i.e. the wii audience who either might not feel like basically buying and playing the same types of games again or have wiis they bought a year or two collecting dust in their closet & won't feel like buying the same thing again knowing after a few days they'll never touch it again. Also, living in a second floor apartment, games that require jumping aren't really something I coould play - also wouldn't want to have to move my coffee table away from in front of my couch every time I turn on the 360.

Still - curious what'll come out of the full conference today & price for more laughs.

Jeff LeVine, Monday, 14 June 2010 13:37 (fifteen years ago)

i think kinect is better than natal. not hugely. but better.

delanie griffith (s1ocki), Monday, 14 June 2010 13:55 (fifteen years ago)

agreed, the association with the word "natal" makes no sense, at least "kinect" sounds like bland crappy microsoft jargonism

i think you nailed it, jeff - the whole natal/move thing feels like they've so completely missed the boat on this trend, too bad it took them years to develop it - and who wants to get a second Wii? nothing shown so far shows the same kind of wow factor the Wii did when it came out, it looks pretty much the same (tired). might as well develop a brand new musical instrument game now for the same effect

Nhex, Monday, 14 June 2010 14:55 (fifteen years ago)

I'm still trying to keep an open mind, as at first I remember being pretty turned off by the Wii controller too, but now I rather like it (for the most part). Mario was a much bigger selling point for me though than Wii Sports (which I remain indifferent to).

Jeff LeVine, Monday, 14 June 2010 15:57 (fifteen years ago)

I hope Kinect is great, not so much because I have a 360 but because I'm planning on getting a Wii finally, & I reckon good competition will get Nintendo working hard to differentiate the Wii (& thus presumably innovating again).

Euler, Monday, 14 June 2010 16:05 (fifteen years ago)

Kinect sounds marginally better than Natal to me because stupid marketing-y spelling aside, "connect" at least kinda sorta tells you what the thing actually does. And I always heard people pronouncing it "na-TAHL," which was weird. It's already a word! You don't get to make up a new pronounciation for it!

Right now I'm waiting with bated breath for the inevitably disappointing Valve "surprise" and cursing the Joystiq update that broke the site on my Blackberry.

a black white asian pine ghost who is fake (Telephone thing), Monday, 14 June 2010 16:32 (fifteen years ago)

I went to this last year and it was boooooooooooring. All the good demos are behind closed doors and you have to have a beefed up credential and the will to wait in long lines. The games on the floor are mostly things that are pretty close to release. Only remarkable things I saw last year was playable arkham asylum (good!) and a aliens v. predator demo (looked good, but the game was shitty).

But I did get some free batteries out of it which was pretty cool..

cozen, Monday, 14 June 2010 18:51 (fifteen years ago)

new xbox is shipping today (impressive) at the same price (not so much)

cozen, Monday, 14 June 2010 19:00 (fifteen years ago)

watched most of the conference...

No price announcement for Kinect must mean it's pretty pricey. Don't really care, because I didn't really see anything interesting. Thought the best looking thing for it was the Ubisoft exercise game, which I would never do anyway. Five minutes to show you can "walk" around a car in the next Forza project / app? The redesigned 360 appeared surprisingly ugly - kind of shocked they would go that direction visually (dark & harsh/broken angles) while supposedly trying to appeal to a more mainstream audience. At least it's smaller and maybe quieter. Not even a token price cut makes it seem like it's not exactly going to fly off the shelves. The ESPN thing sounds good, especially if you can watch most games on demand in HD (since I don't have a DVR) & no extra charge (beyond gold)?

Jeff LeVine, Monday, 14 June 2010 19:54 (fifteen years ago)

some crytek bullshit

was about to say yaaaay but then i looked up who ACTUALLY made far cry 2

goole, Monday, 14 June 2010 19:58 (fifteen years ago)

No price announcement for Kinect must mean it's pretty pricey

Maybe, but it could also mean that they're waiting to see how much Sony charge for Move before they commit to a price. In which case both could end up pretty cheap.

But yeah, that conference was about 0.002% as exciting as the iphone 4 one last week.

JimD, Monday, 14 June 2010 20:12 (fifteen years ago)

Like, this time last year they showed natal and there was a general feeling of "woah, that thing has UNTAPPED POTENTIAL". But a year later and none of it's been tapped yet? Meh.

JimD, Monday, 14 June 2010 20:14 (fifteen years ago)

The new console doesn't look too impressive, though it is nice it got a token HD bump and the wifi inclusion. It may sound minor but the wifi thing actually does make a big difference to me. But probably not enough of a difference to completely get over my MS suspicions built up over the years, and no price cut is not helping.

Nhex, Monday, 14 June 2010 20:22 (fifteen years ago)

and so nice and blatant of them to give a free one to everyone who attended that press conference lol

con: it's inspired by Populous

Nhex, Tuesday, 15 June 2010 15:20 (fifteen years ago)

lol @ "the following trailer is entirely made of in-game footage" followed by graphics that look 8 years out of date.

Who's Eric Chachi? And what's wrong with Populous?

JimD, Tuesday, 15 June 2010 15:26 (fifteen years ago)

pretty psyched for the 3DS reveal and the potential of a new zelda/f-zero and kid ic/donkey kong reboots later

cozen, Tuesday, 15 June 2010 15:28 (fifteen years ago)

Eric Chahi was the creator of Another World/Out of this World; hasn't done anything since Heart of Darkness back in '98.

Populous isn't really bad, but pretty dated and modern attempts at these God games (like Black & White) haven't been great. Though I'd argue isn't wasn't a fantastic game to begin with, especially compared to the Civs and Sim Cities of its own time.

Nhex, Tuesday, 15 June 2010 15:38 (fifteen years ago)

yeah might be a similar steez to M$ holding back the kinect price - waiting for sony to commit on PSP2? iunno, would've been nice to have some detail

cozen, Tuesday, 15 June 2010 17:22 (fifteen years ago)

kudos on Nintendo for focusing on games this time around - was expecting vitality sensor bullshit. The return of 2d platformers looked great. Hyped for Kirby, Donkey Kong and Epic Mickey. Goldeneye on Wii seems like a missed opportunity - really showed how crappy Wii is when dealing with semi-relaistic graphics. Not sold on 3DS, but will wait for hands on impressions. Graphics still looked kinda crappy. Seems like it's still a way off. Curious to learn more specific specs. MGS announcement was definitely a jaw dropper. Strange than neither Nintendo or Microsoft has so far talked about downloadable games at all...

Jeff LeVine, Tuesday, 15 June 2010 17:29 (fifteen years ago)

Yeh the lack of details about the 3DS is frustrating, guess its not coming out for a while, the list of 3rd parties was encouraging though. Glad that Zelda isn't coming out this year, that shit needs to go back in the oven. Really loved the Kirby & Epic Mickey side scrolling stage, 2D awesomeness.

zappi, Tuesday, 15 June 2010 17:31 (fifteen years ago)

wonder if the Vitality Sensor got bumped cos Ubisoft stole the whole concept and showed it off the night before?

zappi, Tuesday, 15 June 2010 17:36 (fifteen years ago)

hope they delay 3DS as long as possible actually (well, past holiday 2010 at least), the more games available at launch the better; and the DS doesn't feel quite dead yet, though getting there

surprised to hear about MGS also. Street Fighter and Resident Evil were mentioned? DJ Hero and Saints Row make me curious to see what they'll do with it. don't really care about Goldeneye/Kid Icarus, and most of the Wii stuff wasn't too interesting as usual, even zelda didn't really do it for me

Nhex, Tuesday, 15 June 2010 17:36 (fifteen years ago)

Curious about the 3ds analog stick & if it's better than the psp knub - could be a game changer.

Sony seemed very flat to me, maybe nothing as completely awful as Microsoft, but nothing actually interesting or exciting either. I did notice they specified a North and South American release date for Gran Turismo for November 2nd - I imagine it'll be sooner for Japan and Europe maybe (though dates have been announced before, so we will see)? Don't care about 3D - not buying a pricey TV and not wearing glasses at home.

btw - do the math, $170 US to get the full move set-up for one person (2 $50 remotes, 1 $30 sub-controller, 1 $40 camera) - ouch - then $40+ for a crap game - crazy.

Jeff LeVine, Tuesday, 15 June 2010 21:30 (fifteen years ago)

none of the 3DS screenshots are throwing around a huge number of polygons, and there is some evidence of low-res textures in the MGS screenshots, but the thing that stands out for me is how clean everything looks; it's a portable dreamcast 2!

I can't see much postprocessing in the screenshots either; MGS seems to show some bloom, but only in very specific places. DoA has some 'flame' effects and SSF4 appears to have some cel shading, but I'm not sure if that's texture based or real-time like JSR.

can't follow details at work (stupid blackberry-incompatible Joystiq), but are they correct in saying Portal 2 will be on ps3 and have Steam Cloud compatibility? Because if so, the surprise is simultaneously more surprising and less interesting than I had thought possible.

Also, exclusive content in the ps3 version of AC: Brotherhood? Anything interesting or more psp unlock BS like in AC2?

And free Move-ified DS: Extraction on the ps3 Dead Space 2- surprisingly classy move, even though I'll probably never fork over the extra cash to play it. Not enough developers exploit the extra storage space on blu-rays.

yeah the Steamcloud/Portal 2 surprise is odd. basically it amounts to some sort of huge bribe from Sony to get Portal on there, but functionally what does it mean? Steam gets its own foothold into onto the PS3? the games will be still be sold retail, it's like having to sign up for Rockstar Social Club to get those extra online benefits or whatever.... you can chat with Steam friends on PC? eh who knows

Nhex, Tuesday, 15 June 2010 22:25 (fifteen years ago)

From the sound of things, you can chat with anyone on Steam no matter what platform they're signed in on, but multiplayer is still platform-specific (well, maybe if/when they release a Mac Portal 2 they'll be able to play with PC people, but that's about it). I'd bet it will probably track Steam achievements in addition to console-specific gamerscore/trophies, too.

my only concern about the 3DS is how you have to have your head quite still to see the 3d effect, i tend to throw myself about quite a bit when playing games.

JimD, Wednesday, 16 June 2010 11:44 (fifteen years ago)

Too much wishful thinking in that one... really at this point, Valve must have some performance doubts about pulling it off, especially in light of all the cinematic shooters that have come out since Ep 2, since sales-wise it's a no brainer. I'd rather not see any more HL games than one than was a total disappointment or dated out of the gate, considering how good everything they've been releasing has been

but i'm still a little paranoid about them turning Portal into a full-length AAA game as well

delanie griffith (s1ocki), Wednesday, 16 June 2010 13:43 (fifteen years ago)

I just think making it full length will be tricky unless they pull something game-changey like that. I guess the other option is that HL2E3 comes out as a kind of "HL3 Prologue" game, running in a whole new engine etc. Because yeah, I agree with Nhex that it's going to look a bit flaky if it ends up just being a nominal spec bump over E2.

go O and O (Ste), Wednesday, 16 June 2010 19:39 (fifteen years ago)

Xpost What gets me about Portal is how they're seemingly moving it AWAY from Half-Life and the convergence of the two games' settings that seemed inevitable after the ending of episode 2. I mean, they could still pull some huge surprise, but I'm not expecting it at this point. Part of it is setting the game centuries after the first one, and part of it is audience expectations- the first Portal came in a package whose star attraction was a Half-Life game, and they had a reasonable expectation that between Episode 2 and Portal people who cared about Gordon Freeman, Action Mute would make the connection and those who didn't wouldn't need to in order to enjoy the story. With Portal 2 being a full-length standalone game, not only is it going to need to stand on its own story-wise but it might not be the best idea to confuse people whose only familiarity with the shared setting comes from playing the first Portal by itself after all the hype/awards/cats and dogs living together/etc.

emotional radiohead whatever (Jordan), Wednesday, 16 June 2010 20:40 (fifteen years ago)

There's a slide projector presentation about the running Aperture/Black Mesa rivalry for government grants running on a loop in a conference room near GLaDOS, and the wink-nudge-you-fanboys-know-what-i'm-talking-about dialogue during the boss fight. They kept the references on the Portal side of things relatively subtle, but made Episode 2 very explicit.

Right now, Kinect only works when you stand. This includes menu navigation. All the cool options to grab a slider and advance through frames of a movie you are watching only work when you are on your feet. Kinect, we've been told, has problems handling your skeletal frame while sitting. The voice commands still work, but every game we've seen and even simple menu navigation have to be done with you out of your seat. That's not exactly how I want to watch my movies.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/OnLive

A low-end computer, as long as it can play video, may be used to play any kind of game since the game is computed on the OnLive server

...

OnLive will sell a console, called the "MicroConsole",[21] that can be connected to a television and directly to the OnLive service, so that it will be possible to use the service without owning a computer.[3]

Steve Perlman has also suggested that the underlying electronics and compression chip could be integrated into set-top boxes and other consumer electronics.[22]

The business model for OnLive is really crappy - you have to pay a monthly subscription ($15 US a month) and have to pay for the games on top of that (around full retail price, supposedly), but if you cancel your subscription, you no longer have access to any of the games you "bought." On top of that, most people figure that the added latency will make multiplayer games that require any kind of timing (shooters / fighters) impossible to play.

There is also at least one onlive competitor, http://www.gaikai.com/ which is going to have some kind of different pricing model (better?), but offer basically the same stuff.

cool if true

Nintendo has packed 3DS with so many features that it's not even promoting some of the major ones. Today's Nikkei detailed one such silent feature: software install.

According to the paper, gamers will be able copy 3DS software to internal memory. Multiple games can be stored with the system in this fashion. You'll be able to switch between games by selecting a title from the system's main menu.

The paper notes that due to this feature, there'll be no need to swap cartridges. When outside of the home, you won't need to carry game cartridges with you.

DSi $169
DS XL $189

zappi, Thursday, 17 June 2010 22:34 (fifteen years ago)

right, all less than $200. they might go $199.99 since the tech seems to be so much further along than the crippled hardware they usually use but Nintendo clearly knows where the sweet spot is. $189 is more likely though.

Can the XBox 360 endure a virgin birth? (jamescobo), Thursday, 17 June 2010 22:42 (fifteen years ago)

i just like the way it goes up!

zappi, Thursday, 17 June 2010 22:44 (fifteen years ago)

hopefully they learn from the PSP Go and not price it anywhere near $250

also hoping the DSi XL was a special one-off thing, since it was physically much larger than the other DSs, costs of material were probably more than the regular DSi

i agree though, $190 seems likely, depending on what's going with PSP2 and when the release date is

Ste - it's not very expensive to build a PC that could play Portal 2 maxed - the Source engine isn't super demanding, which is one of the great things about it... there are a lot of guides out there, something like this at $550 US (371 GBP) would do the job easily... http://www.tomshardware.co.uk/cpu-gpu-overclock,review-31923.html (save $50 (34 GBP) a month and you'll be ready before the game comes out next year)

stofu (cozen), Saturday, 19 June 2010 14:11 (fifteen years ago)

$200 for the lowest model 8GB iPod Touch, though with refurbs or older gens you can do better. I still don't get the feeling Nintendo has really jumped into that pool the way Sony has - still seems like they look at the DS as a family/kid's machine more than a cool gadget, hence the feel, design, and kind of ridiculous durability. Pricing it too high would also move it out of family machine to cool gadget, in terms of market (though arguably since DSi they've been moving back in that direction). Also to compare to upcoming iPT 4th Gen, wifi video chat, etc.

Nhex, Saturday, 19 June 2010 15:07 (fifteen years ago)

The durability thing is awesome though. If the iPad is really going to be an "around the living room" device it needs to be about 1000000 times more rugged.

nuclear power, jet propulsion, radar, laser beams, cordless phone (abanana), Monday, 6 June 2011 17:52 (fourteen years ago)

excruciating to watch, but almost everything they've shown is going to sell well.
is Kinect really as laggy as its been in all the onstage demos? haven't tried it myself yet.

i can't believe those demos are live, not after nintendos fuck up last year.

Yeah I really loved the atmosphere of Strange Journey and to a point the oppressive difficulty helped but about 40 hours in it just got too much hard work and I gave up. I think it was soon after the maze in which teleporters constantly send you back to the start.

NOTES FROM THE FIELD

- played Dark Souls for about 5 minutes before dying; I'd like to blame this on the fact that I couldn't invert the fkn look but a more honest & accurate appraisal is probably just, y'know, YOU DIED (or in the confusing parlance of the new game, YOU HOLLOWED). game owns, though; any fears about whether it's good enough to carry Demon Souls' jock can be safely allayed.

- the Nintendo part was SLAMMED; most of these were for people trying to go hands-on with the WiiU but there was also a hell of a line for all the major 3DS games on display too. I'm going back tomorrow pretty much specifically so that I can get some sweet one-on-one time with Paper Mario 3DS. in the meantime I did get to play the Wii port of Itadaki Street for a good long while (not that I was expecting there to be a line for some weird-ass board game) and it was pretty good! wish it had netplay since I am a resolute shut-in but w/e, it's a decent, quiet little game. my folks from work were all making fun of me for going to E3 and playing a board game but FUK THEM

- speaking of 3DS, I got like 50 streetpasses today~ (including one from some dude already playing OoT?!)

- Anarchy Reigns (the new online beat-em-up from Platinum Software) is a must-play; it reminded me of the Power Stone games a LOT which is a v. good thing. I'll be interested to see how the final game turns out since I need to see (a) how well that kind of gameplay holds up without big setpieces, (b) whether the final stages have more destructable shit, and (c) the depth to which the movesets can be customized before I can say whether it's actually good or not, but they definitely got a lot of the fundamental stuff like the speed and the collision detection and the general feel of the controls right (and the booth dudes kept pointing out that it's got a long way to go before its release next year) so my hopes are pretty high. oh and when I was playing it I looked over and realized that I was playing (and getting my ass beat by) Suda51.

- the Sega booth was also showing off the Shinobi game for 3DS made by Griptonite Software (makers of a Spyro the Dragon GBA game which I shit you not ranks among the best action games on that platform as well as some commendable licensed brawlers for the DS) and it's REALLY REALLY REALLY REALLY REALLY good, like if-you-have-a-3DS-earmark-$40-for-it-in-September good.

- played some Uncharted 3 multiplayer and got a rude awakening of how bad I am at competitive games where you have to run around and shoot people. it felt like more of the same in the best way, though, so w/e.

- noticed a new Pixeljunk game being demoed ("Pixeljunk Sidescroller") and the booth for Twisted Metal but got dragged away before I could play, planning on hitting them both up later in the week too.

- a lot of people are saying the new Sonic game is good; I can confidently say that these people are not your friend. they got the speed right but the jumping all wrong; it feels like LBP.

- the line for Arkham Asylum was nuts so I didn't get to see it. ditto for the new SSX and the NGP.

- the best freebie I saw being given out was the box-shaped Creeper masks promoting Minecraft on (curiously) Xperia Play. most shameless was the bikini carwash offered by Saints Row 3.

- SO MANY JORTS

you are my boy but u rong. there will of course be an avalanche of stupid cash-ins but IMO this could lead to a lot of really subtle developments which make games a shitton better - HUDs can be streamlined, plays/tactics can be called/designed in secret, hopefully we never have to see another inventory screen again, etc. plus all the new possibilities for making existing shit generally more immersive are exciting - Detective Mode sounds like a great fit for the Shield Pose, can you imagine The Show with those fielding mechanics, sniping in (ALL SHOOTERS EVER) will be hell of fun, etc - especially since the new system can run current-gen games from the look of things.

of course in the end I guess it just comes down to how well Nintendo teaches developers to use the tools. the biggest mistake they made last generation was showing developers that you could get away with mapping a button press to a gesture.

XBOX BING GOATSE (jamescobo), Wednesday, 8 June 2011 02:58 (fourteen years ago)

NOETS FRUM TODAEY

- Nintendo had literally every upcoming game out for demo EXCEPT for fucking Paper Mario 3DS (aka the only game I *really* wanted to play at the whole show). BOO. I did get some hands-on time with Starfox 3DS (sucked), Mario 3DS (owned), and Kirby Wii (owned), though.

- it does not please me to say this but the new Pixeljunk game is Not Fun :(

- Starhawk is INCREDIBLY good, and I didn't even get to go up into space.

- I didn't get to see it, but word on the skreet is that the new X-Com game isn't just not shitty, but may have been the game of the show outright, which is a major relief/surprise. ditto for Street Fighter vs. Tekken, which was one of like two fighting games I saw being demoed anywhere (the other being the HD remake of Third Strike).

- went back to the Sega booth and discovered their remake of Guardian Heroes which owned immensely. sadly it's 360-only right now, which especially sucks since the game is way less fun with the analogue stick than with a d-pad.

- the line for Battlefield 3 was INSANE, thank god I don't give a shit about those games.

- Deus Ex 3 is really really really not looking like a winner :( I'm holding out hope that it's just one of those games which sucks in a demo setting since loving Deus Ex requires digging into Deus Ex and trying things eleven thousand different ways, but there's a very real possibility that it's just not a good game.

- Twisted Metal: more like Twisted Meh-tal

- LOVED the trailer for the new Metro game set to Portishead's "Machine Gun", although unfortunately the game looks pretty boring.

- the best FPS I saw was definitely Rage, although as previously mentioned I don't give a fuck about FPSeseseses so I didn't stick around to investigate much

- after playing MGS 3DS I think I'm going to get the HD remaster instead; the controls are just too cramped to work for me, sadly. wish I could have played further if only to see whether the touchscreen was used intelligently but o well.

- I got 95 streetpasses in the last few days and could have gotten more if I cleared out my queue more regularly. of course, I also stood behind some Japanese dude in line with FIVE HUNDRED SIXTY SIX streetpasses so yeah.
