5s and 6s are the worst imo

call all destroyer, Wednesday, 6 October 2010 01:44 (fifteen years ago)

johnny crunch, Wednesday, 6 October 2010 02:05 (fifteen years ago)

I like 5s

Sent via BlackBerry from T-Mobile (dayo), Wednesday, 6 October 2010 02:20 (fifteen years ago)

there is basically never a time when a 6 can't, at the least, be made to disappear. fives can definitely fuck you, though, for sure. the worst is dropping a five and then realizing, with many moves to spare (maybe even a level-up to come), that it will almost certainly never be made to disappear. like you can beaver away at some other part of the board but yr fate is sealed.

are we voting for best or worst

i maintain 4s are the most pernish

cathy: ACK-er (s1ocki), Wednesday, 6 October 2010 11:51 (fifteen years ago)

i find dangerous 5s just crop up less often

cathy: ACK-er (s1ocki), Wednesday, 6 October 2010 11:51 (fifteen years ago)

best has gotta be 7. who was ever sad to see a 7?

ledge, Wednesday, 6 October 2010 11:53 (fifteen years ago)

also sorta depends on whether we're talking about numbers that pop up in circles, or ones we are charged with dropping

cathy: ACK-er (s1ocki), Wednesday, 6 October 2010 11:53 (fifteen years ago)

cuz 7s that pop out of circles can be drags

cathy: ACK-er (s1ocki), Wednesday, 6 October 2010 11:54 (fifteen years ago)

spose they can cause undesirable canyons. but canyons > impenetrable walls.

they can be a fine tool, especially in the earlyd ays of a game

cathy: ACK-er (s1ocki), Wednesday, 6 October 2010 11:58 (fifteen years ago)

letting a 3 creep up too far along the side can fuck your shit up pronto

but yeah there is really only one answer here

progressive cuts (Tracer Hand), Wednesday, 6 October 2010 11:59 (fifteen years ago)

i'd like a discussion to develop about "the opening" in hardcore, i.e. before the first row of gray discs has appeared. i've started taking a lot more time with this, with the idea that a perfect opening can set up a perfect game. however, like most drop7 "rules" i fear this is fantasy

progressive cuts (Tracer Hand), Wednesday, 6 October 2010 12:00 (fifteen years ago)

ya the opening is definitely a thing. i find i try to delay blowing up any numbers until at least the first row. im also obsessed with getting rid of 6s at that stage.

cathy: ACK-er (s1ocki), Wednesday, 6 October 2010 12:00 (fifteen years ago)

yeah I try not to get rid of anything until the first row appears for maximum grey disc poppage

Sent via BlackBerry from T-Mobile (dayo), Wednesday, 6 October 2010 12:03 (fifteen years ago)

let's be clear I meant to say breakage

Sent via BlackBerry from T-Mobile (dayo), Wednesday, 6 October 2010 12:03 (fifteen years ago)

secret 2: build chains. easiest at the beginning, i try to get a column of 7s on one side, bunch of 6s across the bottom with a gap, then fill in the gap when the first grey disks appear. if you're lucky you can get >20,000 in one go, clear that row of disks, rinse and repeat.

this is my ruy lopez. if i start a game and i can't set this up, i quit and go again.

ledge, Wednesday, 6 October 2010 12:03 (fifteen years ago)

(although i will settle for just one 6, and a 2 will do in the side column, 3 at a push.)

ledge, Wednesday, 6 October 2010 12:05 (fifteen years ago)

i get really irritated when the opening gives me low numbers sitting above high numbers - i just know they're going to explode uselessly once they get moved up

progressive cuts (Tracer Hand), Wednesday, 6 October 2010 12:06 (fifteen years ago)

oh totes

cathy: ACK-er (s1ocki), Wednesday, 6 October 2010 12:10 (fifteen years ago)

one of the most annoying things is a 2 that appears on level 3

one of the most satisfying thing is drilling underneath it and revealing a 3 for a mini-chian

cathy: ACK-er (s1ocki), Wednesday, 6 October 2010 12:10 (fifteen years ago)

6s can really fuck up the 'building horizontally' thing. 6 at both sides... grr.

ledge, Wednesday, 6 October 2010 12:12 (fifteen years ago)

ya

croosh to clear at least one column on the far left or right in order to deal with 6s

cathy: ACK-er (s1ocki), Wednesday, 6 October 2010 12:13 (fifteen years ago)

xposts yeah - i am ALL ABOUT when a 5, say, is sitting in vertical position 4, above three complete gray discs. and i get a 4. drop that 4 on it, 5 does half the work, 4 does the other half.

progressive cuts (Tracer Hand), Wednesday, 6 October 2010 12:14 (fifteen years ago)

ya dropping a lower number onto a number one higher is mad satisfying

another one of life's little pleasures: 1s that appear on the bottom row and instantly wink out of existence

cathy: ACK-er (s1ocki), Wednesday, 6 October 2010 12:16 (fifteen years ago)

you get five drops per level-up, right. each level = 14 breakages to clear. so you need on average nearly three breakages per drop to stay alive!

ledge, Wednesday, 6 October 2010 12:18 (fifteen years ago)

that's fucked - only 7s can give you 3 breakages at once! but then you add chains into the mix and you start to have a chance i guess

progressive cuts (Tracer Hand), Wednesday, 6 October 2010 12:20 (fifteen years ago)

satisfying gambit:

a 5 sits on two discs. you drop a 3. you drop a 1. profit!

obv this can be expressed in many permutations, it's just so satisfying to complete a stack with a free-standing 1 that disappears and lets you chaaiiiiiiiiiinnnnn

the only truffuluther on ilx (gbx), Wednesday, 6 October 2010 12:20 (fifteen years ago)

wait waht, any number can break three discs at once?

the only truffuluther on ilx (gbx), Wednesday, 6 October 2010 12:20 (fifteen years ago)

you guys know about the 70,000 point bonus, yeah? it's if you completely clear the board. i've only gotten it twice (and wasn't fast enough to screen shot it). here it is http://gilesbowkett.blogspot.com/2010/06/how-to-win-at-drop7.html

con suelo, Wednesday, 6 October 2010 12:21 (fifteen years ago)

the only truffuluther on ilx (gbx), Wednesday, 6 October 2010 12:24 (fifteen years ago)

the satisfaction of dropping a seven down into a little alcove and busting three at once is just too much for my little brain to bear

progressive cuts (Tracer Hand), Wednesday, 6 October 2010 12:26 (fifteen years ago)

oh man i always wondered about clearing the board!

cathy: ACK-er (s1ocki), Wednesday, 6 October 2010 12:26 (fifteen years ago)

I've been trying to use the new row of discs to my advantage but it's hard (i.e. having a bunch of 4's at level 3 during a level-up) because you need to initiate a chain beforehand in order to get maximum points

Sent via BlackBerry from T-Mobile (dayo), Wednesday, 6 October 2010 12:27 (fifteen years ago)

think I cleared the borad once in my early early days of playing (and may have been on normal, not hardcore)

ya although i find it a more sophisticated pleasure when it's like a 2 or 3 or 4, because they only work in that one specific row, whereas a 7 can deliver that anywhere

Had that board-clear bonus twice. I long for it again. Feel like if I had a super-logic brain I could see a pattern for dropping numbers on a bottom row that would give me maximum chance at it.

portrait of velleity (woof), Wednesday, 6 October 2010 14:23 (fifteen years ago)

I can only wish for that board-clear bonus. Every time I get close to it, with only a few numbers left, they're always gray disks that happened to be high numbers.
Also, I can only dream of this : clear the board, get a 1 afterwards and you're up 140k points! Always a good way to start your game.

Jibe, Wednesday, 6 October 2010 14:29 (fifteen years ago)

progressive cuts (Tracer Hand), Wednesday, 6 October 2010 14:34 (fifteen years ago)

just pulled off a 12x chain! not sure how I feel about going for combos. even at 12x each disc was only giving me like 2-3000 points. a level up is 17000. feel like if you want a high score in hardcore you just gotta go for pure survival, chains be fucked. can be a good way to start off a game though if you get a right distribution of discs

this game is driving me insane. like these past few days, every time i go to bed i can't sleep because as soon as i close my eyes, all i can see is a game of drop7 going on. this is the first time in a loooong time that a game has gotten under my skin this much but shit, it really is that good. feel kind of sad as well as relieved that there is no stat about how much time you've spent playing the game, like there is in orbital for eg, because i'd be curious to see how much time i've spent on it.

Jibe, Wednesday, 13 October 2010 18:06 (fifteen years ago)

im starting to resent games that don't keep an average score, it's so much more interesting to me than high score

guanciale diary (s1ocki), Wednesday, 13 October 2010 18:55 (fifteen years ago)

jibe I have the same problem. except once I see flashes of drop 7 moves I have to debunk them "no that wouldnt happen because if a 4 drops down to the next row and then goes away it would have done that already blah blah crazy bullshit.."

its rough

mayor jingleberries, Wednesday, 13 October 2010 19:26 (fifteen years ago)

haha
also, same as you slocki, i really hate those games that drop my average. that may also be a consequence of me having a hard time racking up huge scores (only one in the 500k range, 4 or 5 in the 400k range) yet consistently getting 280-300k scores. so i'm consistently average, never brilliant. that reads like some of my report cards :D
mayor jingleberries, glad to know i'm not the only one!

Jibe, Wednesday, 13 October 2010 19:56 (fifteen years ago)

Ive brought my avg up to 210k but all those games spent screwing around kind of make it hard to move it higher. And also makes me not feel bad about ragequitting games where I got pwned by 1s and 2s at the top.

Jibe, Friday, 31 December 2010 01:05 (fifteen years ago)

ive really starting thinking abt this like uh poker or some probability shit

johnny crunch, Friday, 31 December 2010 04:02 (fifteen years ago)

I am terrible at this game (so far...)

Mordy, Friday, 31 December 2010 04:03 (fifteen years ago)

jc, you mean setting your board up in a way that will reward fortuitous drops, 'taking risks'

dayo, Friday, 31 December 2010 04:33 (fifteen years ago)

i mean more there being a "right" %age play 2 make on every drop

johnny crunch, Friday, 31 December 2010 05:08 (fifteen years ago)

but yeah also risk/reward math too

johnny crunch, Friday, 31 December 2010 05:09 (fifteen years ago)

dayo, Saturday, 1 January 2011 00:34 (fifteen years ago)

I scored 690,000 earlier in the week. Luck definitely had a hand in it but I was in a serious groove.

strongly recommend. unless you're a bitch (mayor jingleberries), Saturday, 1 January 2011 01:51 (fifteen years ago)

one month passes...

698 000 yesterday! And a week ago I finally got a clear the board bonus. And this game is completely ruling my life, like I keep thinking about numbrs lining up and stuff.

Jibe, Sunday, 6 February 2011 19:37 (fourteen years ago)

one year passes...

Just started playing this.

Went to Thunderbird and noticed my new emails were about to stack to the top, so I immediately grouped by sender and filed.

pplains, Wednesday, 11 April 2012 18:09 (thirteen years ago)

still play this a few times a day at least, god help me

my avg score is 245,204 & i dont ever duck out on games that go badly

johnny crunch, Wednesday, 11 April 2012 18:17 (thirteen years ago)

also there was recently some mag piece where the dude talked abt how addictive this was and from the way he described it, he wasnt even playing on on hardcore

johnny crunch, Wednesday, 11 April 2012 18:19 (thirteen years ago)

still one of the best polls on ILX. still don't know why 4 gets such a bad rap tho when 1 is clearly the brutalest

smash sbros (Will M.), Wednesday, 11 April 2012 18:23 (thirteen years ago)

obv 1's being hatched is nagl anywhere xcept the bottom row or as unboardered entities but having them drop is rarely a problem so..

johnny crunch, Wednesday, 11 April 2012 18:27 (thirteen years ago)

i havent played this game in like 6 months but i LOVED re-reading this thread. i think it may contain some of my finest writing, on ilx or professionally.

A Little Princess btw (s1ocki), Wednesday, 11 April 2012 20:38 (thirteen years ago)

it also led me to re-download it. kinda sad it's a ZYNGA game tho now

A Little Princess btw (s1ocki), Wednesday, 11 April 2012 20:38 (thirteen years ago)

i never quite understood how to get past the most basic level of play (read: i sucked), which is probably why i never got addicted

call all destroyer, Thursday, 12 April 2012 03:04 (thirteen years ago)

this game is probably the only game on my phone that i still play often. it still infuriates me as often as when i started playing. i introduced my cousin to this game and she has become so good at it, her high score is in the 1 million range.

also does drop7 being a zynga game change anything ? i mean, good for the guy for making some money from this terrific game.

Jibe, Thursday, 12 April 2012 03:06 (thirteen years ago)

it's good for him, but I will never give Zynga a dime.

ten months pass...

i just got 877k on this

johnny crunch, Saturday, 2 March 2013 23:30 (twelve years ago)

Normal or hardcore?

I'm not sure why normal is supposedly the easiest one. It's more challenging to me because you've got the numbers AND the unknown gray ones to break open.

877 is sick for either. nice job.

pplains, Saturday, 2 March 2013 23:46 (twelve years ago)

hardcore

normal just takes too long. i do play it occasionally & strategy is def a bit tweaky and i guess 'harder' but its just not a better game in that mode, i could pen a dissertation on this i think

johnny crunch, Sunday, 3 March 2013 00:00 (twelve years ago)

My highest hardcore is 565k. I've got a long ways to go.

pplains, Sunday, 3 March 2013 00:02 (twelve years ago)

highest hardcore is 856k. but i told a friend about this game and very quickly she bested me and broke the 1 million mark.
tbh i kinda wonder about this game. are the numbers in gray blocks completely random? or is it possible to score insanely hgh on every game you play if you make all the right dcisions?

Jibe, Sunday, 3 March 2013 07:17 (twelve years ago)

It's taken me awhile to think of it as a chess game, thinking ahead a few extra moves before making the present one.

Primarily because you don't know what pieces you're going to have in those upcoming moves.

pplains, Sunday, 3 March 2013 17:54 (twelve years ago)

i know this game so well. it's like an old, intimate enemy.

zero dark (s1ocki), Monday, 4 March 2013 22:01 (twelve years ago)

it's my boyd crowder.

zero dark (s1ocki), Monday, 4 March 2013 22:01 (twelve years ago)

otm about it being an old enemy. i'm kind of saddened by the leaderboards though, where the highest score is in the billion range for hardcore, which def feels like someone cheated.

Jibe, Tuesday, 5 March 2013 03:30 (twelve years ago)

damn congrats! still can't go higher than 850k.
also the other day i got three clear the board bonuses in a row (cleared the board then got a 1 then another 1) and then got horrible luck and barely managed to get to 450k points, such a disappointment

No ads or anything, but it opening up Facebook without warning surprised me.

pplains, Thursday, 17 September 2015 13:05 (ten years ago)

six months pass...

Sometimes I get to where there's a row of 1's at the top and no way to topple them, my second-to-last ball comes up as a 2, and I'm like the Greek from "The Wire", waiting under the bridge for someone, putting away the phone and saying, "It isn't going to work out."

pplains, Monday, 11 April 2016 15:00 (nine years ago)

I'll also make a dumb mistake, like throwing a 1 away on a tall stack instead of busting a block on the far left, and I hear Norman Chad and Lon McEachern in my head going, "Oh, that was a bad play. He's walking right into it."

pplains, Monday, 11 April 2016 15:01 (nine years ago)

Downloaded it on my shitty Android phone and saw the new version for the first time. It even had the dumb "rack 'em!" sound effects at the beginning. What a way to spoil a classic game.

pplains, Monday, 11 April 2016 15:04 (nine years ago)

been meaning to read up on the strategy of this game. i play compulsively on the train but keep an average around 100k, sometimes i can get up to around 300k if i clear the board early.

normally i just try and nuke all 1s and 2s while keeping as many 5s, 6s, and 7s on the board, but i assume this is not actually the way to maximize ones score

J0rdan S., Monday, 11 April 2016 15:28 (nine years ago)

My first strategy is go a row of sixes and then pile some 7s at the end, so you'll get all those sixes to explode on the third or fourth step of a chain.

My strategy after that is to panic and start busting up anything I can find.

pplains, Monday, 11 April 2016 15:33 (nine years ago)

I feel like the success or dareisay genius of this game is that it resists any? most? like absolute strategies imo

like I guess I have a loose strat of trying to eliminate any 6s asap but there are def exceptions to that so ¯\(°_0)/¯

johnny crunch, Monday, 11 April 2016 17:47 (nine years ago)

SO much gambling... "If I get a 2 and bust that one, and it's a 1, then I can move that 4 down..." = basically risking it all on filling an inside straight.

pplains, Monday, 11 April 2016 17:49 (nine years ago)

while keeping as many 5s, 6s, and 7s on the board
