seven months pass...

i'm in on the demo now. it's offline at the moment. will report back.

Don't start the chain you know? (forksclovetofu), Monday, 27 June 2011 04:21 (fourteen years ago)

it's finally working. it's amazing based on ten minutes. i wish i didn't have a lot of work to do because this is all achievement unlocked with great music and visuals and natural gameplay and depth out the wazoo.
Seriously, everyone on here should try to get into the beta; it's feeling like this is going to be a wonderful fun game.

Keita Takahashi, famed Japanese game designer and creator of surreal games like Katamari Damacy and Noby Noby Boy, has signed on to help the co-founder of Flickr create a new sort of massively multiplayer game.

... you can use alchemy in the game to create something called "No No Powder." The powder allows its user to get around needing to harvest energy to do things. The character can do anything he wants free of the constraints of energy, until the powder runs out. Then the character needs to find more powder... or he or she dies.

"Some people think we modeled it after coke," Butterfield says. "But it's more modeled after crystal meth."

ok, jumped the queue. i'll let you know when i'm in.

Mordy, Wednesday, 13 July 2011 04:20 (fourteen years ago)

OMG, you have to learn how to write in the game and then buy paper and then you can leave notes everywhere

i am currently learning the skill of Bureaucratic Arts Level 1 so that I can get the papers necessary to get papers from the lizards.

GOD Al Gore invented the internet JUST FOR THIS! Transistors? Number theory? Integrated circuits? LED screens? High level programming languages? All so you could collect poo for each other. So yeah ... have "fun".

emil.y, Wednesday, 13 July 2011 13:01 (fourteen years ago)

can you friend people without linking to facebook? i was trying to figure it out

Nhex, Wednesday, 13 July 2011 13:19 (fourteen years ago)

i've been doing this sence ethe last go round. just bought my first proper house

remy bean, Wednesday, 13 July 2011 13:46 (fourteen years ago)

trying to put my finger on why i like this so much. first and foremost, the writing is spectacular; very crisp and clever. The art design is effortlessly gorgeous and really unique. And the constant flow of new stuff makes grinding not feel grindy. The vibe in the space is astonishingly chill; everyone is talkative and friendly. I ran into a few staff people and they were quite nice.

brooklyn's complicated relationship with bacon (forksclovetofu), Wednesday, 13 July 2011 14:52 (fourteen years ago)

yeah, they're crazy friendly. i reported a bug and got a really kind 2 paragraph email back w/in 24 hours

remy bean, Wednesday, 13 July 2011 14:55 (fourteen years ago)

any tips on how to friend someone in the game w/o linking to fb? I want to send mails! Also I want a knife & board b/c I want to cook sammiches.

Euler, Wednesday, 13 July 2011 14:56 (fourteen years ago)

knife and board is cheap, i think?

remy bean, Wednesday, 13 July 2011 14:57 (fourteen years ago)

i can't figure out where to get buns yet, but board and knife are very cheap
i figured out how to set destinations last night and finally started open exploration. The world is actually pretty big!
i just bought a year membership; perfectly happy to support this.
a little worried cuz it looks like they're gonna reset everything once the beta ends and that makes me not wanna learn new skills?

brooklyn's complicated relationship with bacon (forksclovetofu), Wednesday, 13 July 2011 15:07 (fourteen years ago)

make your own buns! spice from spice plants and flour from grain.

has anyone figured out the hairball miniaturization thing?

Mordy, Wednesday, 13 July 2011 15:19 (fourteen years ago)

ah, i haven't learned that recipe yet. found the allspice last night
i found a useless shiny thing BEFORE i went to hairball land and gave him the one i already had. worked fine.

express entry is still open and i HIGHLY recommend ilxors get on board
http://glitch.com/fans/

brooklyn's complicated relationship with bacon (forksclovetofu), Wednesday, 13 July 2011 15:20 (fourteen years ago)

Where can I buy the knife and board? I am up on top of the mtn which is mining country.

Euler, Wednesday, 13 July 2011 15:21 (fourteen years ago)

I got the teddy from miniaturization---got the shiny thing off the table.

Euler, Wednesday, 13 July 2011 15:21 (fourteen years ago)

I'm in - just did the shiny thing quest. Called myself 'Cindy Electronium' as I was thinking about Raymond Scott at the time, though I'm not so keen on that name now.

emil.y, Wednesday, 13 July 2011 15:39 (fourteen years ago)

i'm involved in a new street project at patchi preech, but i'm too lameo to actually contribute anything

remy bean, Wednesday, 13 July 2011 15:56 (fourteen years ago)

loving the whole skills thing. it reminds me of an old MOO-type game called Avalon where you had to learn all these different skills and they all had different proficiency levels

Mordy, Wednesday, 13 July 2011 15:59 (fourteen years ago)

i don't know how you guys are completing this miniaturization thing. whenever i go i just walk around and there's nothing to interact with. just a sleeping cat to climb on top of, a shoe, and a table.

Mordy, Wednesday, 13 July 2011 16:00 (fourteen years ago)

lol nevermind, i just found the hairball underneath the table!

Mordy, Wednesday, 13 July 2011 16:01 (fourteen years ago)

what skill sets are you guys pursuing? i did the first two learning skills and am working on all the basic cooking stuff (saucery at the moment)

Mordy, Wednesday, 13 July 2011 16:05 (fourteen years ago)

I've just had a bureaucratic nightmare getting my papers. Fun!

emil.y, Wednesday, 13 July 2011 16:09 (fourteen years ago)

So where are these bureaucratic halls?

Mordy, Wednesday, 13 July 2011 16:26 (fourteen years ago)

I think it was Gregarious Grange in Groddle Meadow. I'm having trouble finding any weedy patches to hoe for my achievement.

emil.y, Wednesday, 13 July 2011 16:32 (fourteen years ago)

buy a house. they come with weedy patches.

Mordy, Wednesday, 13 July 2011 16:52 (fourteen years ago)

I'm not sure I can afford that, even if I knew how. I can barely scrape together the cash for a bigger bag.

i have no papers, barely feel like a citizen :(

sonderangerbot, Wednesday, 13 July 2011 22:02 (fourteen years ago)

get some papers. really, the skills you choose determine what you're doing in the game. each skill creates a new quest to fulfill, and the further down the skillline you get, the more complicated/complex the quests.

on a related note: Mordy's Pot Brownies + Eggs Restaurant will soon be open for business. I'm pretty sure I decided to become a cook entirely because of the name of the giant associated with it.

Mordy, Wednesday, 13 July 2011 22:37 (fourteen years ago)

Mordy, Thursday, 14 July 2011 02:31 (fourteen years ago)

as you level up your skills, your efficiency collecting levels up as well. i harvest 12 eggs each turn, atm

remy bean, Thursday, 14 July 2011 02:54 (fourteen years ago)

So can you level every skill or are you at some point "committed" to a given profession a la wow

g++ (gbx), Thursday, 14 July 2011 03:05 (fourteen years ago)

740 kids

Nhex, Thursday, 14 July 2011 03:48 (fourteen years ago)

you can level up every skill as far as i know but at some point it becomes impractical, and your time is better spent in the pursuit of one or another, i.e. alchemy or making crudites or tending your wanton flock of porcine wonders, all of whom are named Chad.

remy bean, Thursday, 14 July 2011 04:13 (fourteen years ago)

Just moved into 710!

JimD, Thursday, 14 July 2011 09:57 (fourteen years ago)

So, how much of a timesuck is this? I don't have much free time or (probably) the willpower not to spend time which shouldn't be free on it if I sign up, but it sounds pretty intriguing.

i didn't really know there was an ilx connection? it's been down except for a few weekends, which is good b/c it prevents me from burning out

remy bean, Thursday, 14 July 2011 12:39 (fourteen years ago)

remy, what did you mean about it not being worth it to try to get all the skills? Presumably by the time you're level 40 you've clocked enough hours to learn everything, no?

Mordy, Thursday, 14 July 2011 14:37 (fourteen years ago)

I haven't decided what to do with my character at all yet, so I'm just learning bits of everything and still wandering about cuddling pigs constantly. But the time to learn skills doesn't seem too daunting yet. I think I just don't want to go the easy path and learn the farming skills as I'm afraid I'll just end up playing an advanced version of Farmville if I do that.

Also, I noticed that there's a group feature - does anyone fancy setting up an ilx0r group and playing about with that? Or, if someone already has, inviting me to it too?

emil.y, Thursday, 14 July 2011 14:51 (fourteen years ago)

JimD, Thursday, 14 July 2011 15:33 (fourteen years ago)

mordy, some of the higher level skills take 7 - 12 days to learn, and for a not-very-appreciable gain (say in jellisac handling, you get 3-5 more pieces/harest) it's a lot of commitment for a skill you're not going to use often/at all. i mean, the skill learning happens in the background so presumably given enough time you will learn everything but at least in early stages of the game specialization is key

Капитан ☭ (remy bean), Thursday, 14 July 2011 15:54 (fourteen years ago)

i'm trying to become an alchemist but other than that i've mostly been running around squeezing chickens and drinking hooch. feel like i don't want to do all the advanced stuff now if they're just about to shut it down again. i'm in g towers 780 btw!

sonderangerbot, Thursday, 14 July 2011 16:01 (fourteen years ago)

i am trying to become a king of bureaucrats but to get level 3 i have to get an emblem of lem which seems like a pain in the ass

lemon kerrang! (jjjusten), Thursday, 14 July 2011 16:45 (fourteen years ago)

also considering that level 2 got me a general building permit that i have no idea how to use its a little why bother tbh

lemon kerrang! (jjjusten), Thursday, 14 July 2011 16:46 (fourteen years ago)

Yeah, I liked the idea of becoming a bureaucrat but I have no clue as what to do with level 2. I found an emblem of something else but it seems like if I keep it I can get mood and XP bonuses every day, and it only unlocks Refining II, which I don't really need yet.

emil.y, Thursday, 14 July 2011 16:48 (fourteen years ago)

so this is an obv realization but you can dramatically increase learning speeds by donating high-value items to the god of w/e skill yr learning. i just halved the learning time for light green thumb 2 by giving over an emotional bear

g++ (gbx), Thursday, 14 July 2011 16:51 (fourteen years ago)

emil.y, Friday, 15 July 2011 20:27 (fourteen years ago)

I feel like I burnt out on this already. Like, first session I loved it and played until 3am. Then I started it up again the next day and I dunno, I suddenly found I didn't care at all about levelling up any further or learning anything new, or even exploring anywhere (because all those areas are pretty similar anyway). I guess the fact I know it's going to get a reboot before the game proper starts might be what killed it for me, cos the early stuff's all fun, but probably not fun enough to warrant a second play through.

JimD, Friday, 15 July 2011 20:52 (fourteen years ago)

I'm going to wait until it launches to give it a lengthy trial. I played for about two hours but it was fun enough.

polyphonic, Friday, 15 July 2011 22:44 (fourteen years ago)

I dream of vodka sandwich (jjjusten), Monday, 25 July 2011 19:53 (fourteen years ago)

blarggh there is no way to invite someone you arent glitch friends with or some such bullshit so i guess just search poxy and apply maybe?

thats kind of a dumb implementation tbh

I dream of vodka sandwich (jjjusten), Monday, 25 July 2011 19:57 (fourteen years ago)

invite me?

Mordy, Monday, 25 July 2011 19:57 (fourteen years ago)

Mordy, Monday, 25 July 2011 20:01 (fourteen years ago)

I dream of vodka sandwich (jjjusten), Monday, 25 July 2011 20:01 (fourteen years ago)

yeh, i'm friends with mordy

generous doler out of lollies (forksclovetofu), Monday, 25 July 2011 20:02 (fourteen years ago)

hah there seems to be no way to friend people right now since the game isnt running? thats dumb

I dream of vodka sandwich (jjjusten), Monday, 25 July 2011 20:03 (fourteen years ago)

yeah, the beta state still has some real frustration points.
it's amazing how DEEP this game is; i just found out about group projects wherein glitchers work to expand the glitch universe using their skills
and i've yet to even get alchemy. About fourteen hours in.

generous doler out of lollies (forksclovetofu), Monday, 25 July 2011 20:05 (fourteen years ago)

"According to their Facebook post, looks like the next test is scheduled to start Friday 7/29"
Well, that's my plans for friday then.

generous doler out of lollies (forksclovetofu), Monday, 25 July 2011 20:05 (fourteen years ago)

Yeah, just before the last test ended I was sort of getting bored with the farming/crafting aspect of it, and then next thing I knew I'd found myself in a tower where some spooky girl ghost sent me on a vision quest. Completely reinvigorated my enthusiasm for the game.

emil.y, Monday, 25 July 2011 22:56 (fourteen years ago)

Is there any word on when this starts for real? Cause this sounds amazing, but I don't think I want to get into it and then have to start all over after the beta ends.

Godzilla vs. Rodan Rodannadanna (The Yellow Kid), Monday, 25 July 2011 23:27 (fourteen years ago)

there's at least one more reset - but hell, it's worth it just to try out

invite me to the group dudes

Nhex, Tuesday, 26 July 2011 04:12 (fourteen years ago)

My understanding is that the beta ends around the star of fall.
Inevitable reset is a little worrisome but honestly this game has so much depth and is so compulsively playable that I won't mind retracing my footsteps at all.

generous doler out of lollies (forksclovetofu), Tuesday, 26 July 2011 04:16 (fourteen years ago)

I was getting kinda bored too - granted it probably didn't help that my main skill line is meditation and teleporting - but then I decided what the hell, I'll take the subway somewhere, and realized the game world is LIKE HUGE

Nhex, Tuesday, 26 July 2011 04:26 (fourteen years ago)

I played this for a few hours and yeah it is FUN. Never really played games like this before so am sorta just running around doing everything inefficiently. I like doing cheffy tasks. And I need to get my damn papers. Anyway can I get a group invite too pls. Same username as ilx.

oppet, Tuesday, 26 July 2011 17:34 (fourteen years ago)

who is cindy electronium?

remy bean, Tuesday, 26 July 2011 17:35 (fourteen years ago)

she friended me too. i assumed she wasn't anyone from ilx...

Mordy, Tuesday, 26 July 2011 17:36 (fourteen years ago)

That's me. Raymond Scott reference, due in part to the '50s poll running at the same time I signed up.

emil.y, Tuesday, 26 July 2011 17:37 (fourteen years ago)

ahh, got it. i was secretly wondering if it wasjbr

remy bean, Tuesday, 26 July 2011 17:37 (fourteen years ago)

maybe i'm wrong

generous doler out of lollies (forksclovetofu), Friday, 29 July 2011 19:16 (fourteen years ago)

yeah i just did some forum reading, i'm wrong. nevermind. go back to spice tree harvesting

generous doler out of lollies (forksclovetofu), Friday, 29 July 2011 19:19 (fourteen years ago)

really want to play this but i'm not eager to play for a week (or whatever) and then have my stats wiped.

future events are now current events (Z S), Saturday, 30 July 2011 23:02 (fourteen years ago)

The way I see it, there are enough different skill trees that I can enjoy focusing on one branch now, and after the reset I'll start on something else. By the time I get round to learning cooking again I won't resent having to go through the same tasks. Plus it's just fun to play. It's definitely worth getting in now imo.

oppet, Sunday, 31 July 2011 10:04 (fourteen years ago)

agreed. there's no downside. maybe you even get to skip an addiction!

generous doler out of lollies (forksclovetofu), Sunday, 31 July 2011 15:34 (fourteen years ago)

Summer Slam! (Ste), Monday, 1 August 2011 16:10 (fourteen years ago)

this game is pretty much the opposite of horrid facebook go-nowhere endless gayness. it's surreal weird go-nowhere endless awesomeness instead.

Mordy, Monday, 1 August 2011 17:02 (fourteen years ago)

tbf a lot of its appeal depends on how willing you are to be charmed by it... i eventually gave in, mostly because of the sheer amount of funny writing in the game

Nhex, Monday, 1 August 2011 17:47 (fourteen years ago)

it reminds me of psychonauts, a little

remy bean, Monday, 1 August 2011 17:48 (fourteen years ago)

this looks amazing

BIG HOOS aka the steendriver, Monday, 1 August 2011 17:52 (fourteen years ago)

reconsidering my decision to try out a million different skills when the next reset happens - it's cool to try out stuff, but you end up having to carry so many different objects, and it's hard to get very far unless you really focus on stuff

like maybe next time i'll just do animal husbandry OR plants/soil, but not both. the cooking stuff spirals crazy out of control

Nhex, Wednesday, 3 August 2011 18:35 (fourteen years ago)

the crops and animal stuff seems more suited to solo play than mining/bog harvesting/etc., it seems

Nhex, Wednesday, 3 August 2011 18:36 (fourteen years ago)

once you get like eight or nine bigger bags and toolboxes, that problem goes away.

I'm a nerd and nerdy things happened (forksclovetofu), Wednesday, 3 August 2011 18:44 (fourteen years ago)

i like being a cook

I'm a nerd and nerdy things happened (forksclovetofu), Wednesday, 3 August 2011 18:44 (fourteen years ago)

i also like just giving stuff away to random people. It's a good game for good karma.
Has anyone died yet? I'm tempted to do it just to see what happens but I'm a little nervous about it. I hear you have to get out of hell?

I'm a nerd and nerdy things happened (forksclovetofu), Wednesday, 3 August 2011 18:45 (fourteen years ago)

I hear you have to get out of hell?

not until you give satan a beelzebub BLT!

this game is so built up in my mind that i'm confident i can make a beelzebub BLT

I dream of vodka sandwich (jjjusten), Wednesday, 3 August 2011 18:48 (fourteen years ago)

Beelzebub BLT quest SOUNDS like something you'd find in this quest.

mining and smelting and grinding and making elements holy crap this game

sonderangerbot, Thursday, 4 August 2011 16:52 (fourteen years ago)

i'm learning levitation
and just got that attack thing

I'm a nerd and nerdy things happened (forksclovetofu), Thursday, 4 August 2011 16:54 (fourteen years ago)

I dunno if this is useful to any of you, but I've found wandering around the ancestral lands you get much better quality quoins (for instance, ~60xp over the usual ~6), so it's worth doing that at least once a day to stock up. Though the bandits can be annoying.

I'm still uncertain as to whether I'll be prepared to start over again come reset, but I've definitely been enjoying taking part so far. I want to start learning the engineering stuff but I'm too tempted by the attack skill.

emil.y, Thursday, 4 August 2011 17:20 (fourteen years ago)

wait what there are bandits

I dream of vodka sandwich (jjjusten), Thursday, 4 August 2011 17:22 (fourteen years ago)

future events are now current events (Z S), Thursday, 4 August 2011 17:25 (fourteen years ago)

There are bandits! They are cute little things, but they want your stuff. You can fairly easily outrun them or jump over them but I've been in places where four of them appear at once, and that makes it hard.

emil.y, Thursday, 4 August 2011 17:27 (fourteen years ago)

Is it possible to hit these bandits with a hoe?

Gonna give up my 740 Gregarious Towers apt. soon - if anyone wants it, let me know, we can set up a thing where I sell it and you can snatch it up right away.

Nhex, Tuesday, 16 August 2011 11:46 (fourteen years ago)

Nhex, have you worked on any of the street-building projects? They're kind of fun, but you've gotta be fairly high level to make an impact.

the widening gyre (remy bean), Tuesday, 16 August 2011 11:48 (fourteen years ago)

Yeah, actually did one last night! yeah, its tough, you need level IV/level V skills of everything. The key it seems to is to prepare beforehand, getting lots of raw materials and food ready. Of course, I didn't come anywhere near the the Top 5, but it was still fun to see so many people come together and work on the same project at once.

Nhex, Tuesday, 16 August 2011 12:20 (fourteen years ago)

i'm about to try to buy one of those 50k aptmts.
got a long way to go before i'm level iv/v skills on everything

I'm a nerd and nerdy things happened (forksclovetofu), Tuesday, 16 August 2011 21:54 (fourteen years ago)

well, not everything at once - there are plenty of things you can do at low level - but the bulk of it, you need a specific level V skill to help, like Gardening V, Medition V, etc. if you have even one of those skills, it's worth getting in on it

Nhex, Tuesday, 16 August 2011 22:12 (fourteen years ago)

meditation V? there's a meditation V?

I'm a nerd and nerdy things happened (forksclovetofu), Wednesday, 17 August 2011 03:23 (fourteen years ago)

nope, just buggin

Nhex, Wednesday, 17 August 2011 04:42 (fourteen years ago)

you got me excited!

I'm a nerd and nerdy things happened (forksclovetofu), Wednesday, 17 August 2011 12:17 (fourteen years ago)

dudes i really love all the alchemy stuff in this game, making elements and compounds etc, def going to be my focus when it resets

history of the rook museum sequence gives some perspective on where the game is headed i think - everybody else already do that quest?

I dream of vodka sandwich (jjjusten), Wednesday, 17 August 2011 17:00 (fourteen years ago)

yeah it was pretty cool

my favorite is still a split between the firefly whistling and the gwendoline quest

Nhex, Wednesday, 17 August 2011 17:44 (fourteen years ago)

The Rook thing blew my gourd, excited for when this gets aggro
have not done gwendoline yet.
I gather that the beta has content basically out to the point where you've maxed out all extant skills?
I really want that big mcmansion.

xp there do seem to be a bunch of skills arbitrarily stopped (the ones which require "The Impossible Achievement"

yeah, i was gonna go for a 30K house, but thought, wtf - might as well go for it all - 5 PATCHES, baby

Nhex, Thursday, 18 August 2011 01:12 (fourteen years ago)

Is it incredibly sad that I've named all the animals in my back garden after favourite musicians?

emil.y, Thursday, 18 August 2011 01:27 (fourteen years ago)

nah, that's pretty awesome. tbh just the fact that you have animals and a garden is pretty cool, all i have is some crappy rubies no one will buy.

sonderangerbot, Thursday, 18 August 2011 01:29 (fourteen years ago)

Donate them to the giants. You get a fair amount of XP and favour for the gems found while mining.

emil.y, Thursday, 18 August 2011 01:32 (fourteen years ago)

Current test ends today - queue up that skill!

Nhex, Thursday, 18 August 2011 11:55 (fourteen years ago)

when does the test end?

DALEKS OF GOD (DJP), Thursday, 18 August 2011 13:31 (fourteen years ago)

don't know, but last time it was noon PST

Nhex, Thursday, 18 August 2011 14:48 (fourteen years ago)

Someone in the forums says about 5pm PDT, which seems to be based on this tweet:

playglitch Glitch, the game
Only ~24 hours left in this test! We close Thursday afternoon-ish PST - there will be in-game notifications for the exact closing time.

so basically I dunno

I am away this weekend so I guess this is good timing (as long as I can get my current short skill learnt in time to queue up a long skill next)

the ascent of nyan (a passing spacecadet), Thursday, 18 August 2011 14:55 (fourteen years ago)

thanks for the heads up. just queued animal kinship vii

I'm a nerd and nerdy things happened (forksclovetofu), Thursday, 18 August 2011 15:31 (fourteen years ago)

ah crap, all of my skill trees are blocked by needing to spend emblems of whoever and i am at work and should be doing stuff :(

I dream of vodka sandwich (jjjusten), Thursday, 18 August 2011 15:36 (fourteen years ago)

there's a greasemonkey script somewhere that'll allow you to cue-up 5-10 skills in advance

a long time ago i used to be snush (remy bean), Thursday, 18 August 2011 15:37 (fourteen years ago)

oooooo dangerous

I'm a nerd and nerdy things happened (forksclovetofu), Thursday, 18 August 2011 15:37 (fourteen years ago)

i'm done playing this until it reopens. i don't want to exhaust everything fun to do.

Mordy, Thursday, 18 August 2011 15:56 (fourteen years ago)

learned ez cooking 1 just because it was there

I dream of vodka sandwich (jjjusten), Thursday, 18 August 2011 16:05 (fourteen years ago)

idk maybe i have too much faith in these dudes but i am pretty optimistic that they are going to roll out some fairly awesome stuff on the regular, so im going to keep cracking away - also this beta has def focused my ideas about what i would concentrate on in the next go around - def didnt need quite so much teleportation, def should have gone deep earlier on mining/refining/etc. i dont think cooking or gardening are ever going to really grab me tbh

I dream of vodka sandwich (jjjusten), Thursday, 18 August 2011 16:08 (fourteen years ago)

see i'm exactly the opposite; obsessing over food and harvesting is what this game is about to me.

I'm a nerd and nerdy things happened (forksclovetofu), Thursday, 18 August 2011 16:10 (fourteen years ago)

yeah having just discovered alchemy and contrasting that with the sheer amount of bag space taken up by cooking, I would definitely go that route first next time

although the ability to quickly reset my mood by grabbing a few ingredients and whipping up something fast is awesome

Rob Based and DJ EZ God (DJP), Thursday, 18 August 2011 16:10 (fourteen years ago)

see this is why we need to coordinate our playstyles better, then we could have make our group into a coalition where ppl only have to concentrate on 1 or 2 skills

Rob Based and DJ EZ God (DJP), Thursday, 18 August 2011 16:11 (fourteen years ago)

the big problem w/a refining focus is that grinding stuff burns energy like its going out of style, so i have to keep buying shittons of food or wasting a bunch of time petting random piggies or whatever.

I dream of vodka sandwich (jjjusten), Thursday, 18 August 2011 16:12 (fourteen years ago)

so yeah what dan said

I dream of vodka sandwich (jjjusten), Thursday, 18 August 2011 16:12 (fourteen years ago)

and thus we take our first steps towards becoming an actual gaming guild

*gulp*

Rob Based and DJ EZ God (DJP), Thursday, 18 August 2011 16:13 (fourteen years ago)

well I'm gonna be the cook for this group.
Learning awesome stew kinda fixes everything? 2 meat, 2 potato, 2 parsnip, 2 onion, 5 beans, 4 potato, 1 saffron. 200 energy. 18 energy to make. I keep 80 of all the above produce and make as many as i can with meat/bean reserves everytime i find a produce seller.

I'm a nerd and nerdy things happened (forksclovetofu), Thursday, 18 August 2011 16:20 (fourteen years ago)

in other words, find and friend me in game so i can mail you two awesome stews and you'll be set for food for two game days

I'm a nerd and nerdy things happened (forksclovetofu), Thursday, 18 August 2011 16:20 (fourteen years ago)

I hereby offer to be the dealer. Making no-no powder is the only thing that's made me any money in this game.

emil.y, Thursday, 18 August 2011 16:21 (fourteen years ago)

how do I friend someone in game? I'm not on fb with any (?) of you so I can't do it that way.

Euler, Thursday, 18 August 2011 16:24 (fourteen years ago)

i think its a pretty good testament to the game that we all are finding totally different things that make it fun

i am also intrigued by the musicblox - i enjoy it when crabs sidle up and want to listen to tunes

xpost i thought they mentioned adding a search function on the last update? havent looked for it yet though

I dream of vodka sandwich (jjjusten), Thursday, 18 August 2011 16:25 (fourteen years ago)

we definitely need a dealer.
the things i'm finding that make good cash oddly enough are stews and cherries... i'm getting 24 cherries per tree, so an average board on parts of the world are good for 100. 250 cherries sell for 2500 on the auction board fairly easy so that's what i've been doing.

I'm a nerd and nerdy things happened (forksclovetofu), Thursday, 18 August 2011 16:27 (fourteen years ago)

HAVE NOT MET CRABS YET
this game is pretty deep

I'm a nerd and nerdy things happened (forksclovetofu), Thursday, 18 August 2011 16:27 (fourteen years ago)

lol I seem to run into a crab like every third zone

Rob Based and DJ EZ God (DJP), Thursday, 18 August 2011 16:31 (fourteen years ago)

jjjjusten, you need to get your hands on some flaming humbabas. makes grinding so much easier.

Rob Based and DJ EZ God (DJP), Thursday, 18 August 2011 16:33 (fourteen years ago)

yeah i know i should use some of the drinks that make mining and grinding not eat up energy but i am too much of a hoarder

I dream of vodka sandwich (jjjusten), Thursday, 18 August 2011 16:36 (fourteen years ago)

I love the crabs. Uh.

Is there anything groups can do besides have a private forum at the moment? It'd be good to have a central repository for food/materials/etc but I haven't noticed anything like that.

emil.y, Thursday, 18 August 2011 16:38 (fourteen years ago)

we could buy a big house, invite each other to enter and get a group place.
Just have to make sure not to allow other people in or else the safe gets emptied.

I'm a nerd and nerdy things happened (forksclovetofu), Thursday, 18 August 2011 16:41 (fourteen years ago)

haven't gotten to the point of getting a residence yet; can those be used as communal storage?

xp: well I guess that answers that

Rob Based and DJ EZ God (DJP), Thursday, 18 August 2011 16:42 (fourteen years ago)

inventory breakdown for me is one toolbox, one big bag for tools, one big bag for groceries, one big bag for produce/dairy, one big bag for meals, one big bag for cherry/bean/wheat/egg/meat, one big bag for drinks, two big bags for "stuff", one big bag for musicblocks, one big bag for bubbles/earth, one big bag for rocks, one meditation orb

I'm a nerd and nerdy things happened (forksclovetofu), Thursday, 18 August 2011 16:43 (fourteen years ago)

"4PM Vancouver/San Francisco time" according to http://beta.glitch.com/forum/general/6351/

xposts oh man the crabs are awesome, I have been waving my hands around like pinchers and going "hey, man. got any tunes?" randomly at my bf since getting on this thing

the ascent of nyan (a passing spacecadet), Thursday, 18 August 2011 16:45 (fourteen years ago)

i'd chip in, made some cash selling shrine powder. nowhere near the 50k you were talking about earlier though!

sonderangerbot, Thursday, 18 August 2011 16:46 (fourteen years ago)

xp oh and boxes for spices, compounds and elements of course
why am i not meeting crabs? where are they?

I'm a nerd and nerdy things happened (forksclovetofu), Thursday, 18 August 2011 16:46 (fourteen years ago)

Wish they'd hurry up and reboot this so I can justify getting back into it. I'm worried that by the time it happens, you'll all know the systems inside out and I'll be the irritating newb getting everything wrong.

JimD, Thursday, 18 August 2011 16:51 (fourteen years ago)

there doesn't seem to really be any systems? It's all grinding, exploration, surprises and good design/writing.

I'm a nerd and nerdy things happened (forksclovetofu), Thursday, 18 August 2011 16:52 (fourteen years ago)

I think I mainly meet them in Ix? But other places too, can't remember, sorry.

I seem to have fallen into cooking (though I am still pretty low level) because it had the most obvious reward tree, I guess? like, I learnt mining I and II and got myself some rocks and then realised that it was going to take another six billion levels to do anything with them and I didn't know what that "anything" was going to be anyway

whereas with cooking, it's like, here are 3 easy recipes for energy-restoring food, here is a quest to make 10 meals, once you've done that you'll get another 3 recipes and another quest, etc

but I've got to admit I'm getting a bit bored of the cooking, so, uh, hi! tell me what is awesome about your chosen skill paths, what you can make now you are a level whatever, etc (no spoiler-level detail, just a quick introduction to what you like about yr skillz)

the ascent of nyan (a passing spacecadet), Thursday, 18 August 2011 16:53 (fourteen years ago)

Maybe I mean you'll have seen all the surprises then? Dunno. Maybe it'll all be fine and great!

JimD, Thursday, 18 August 2011 16:54 (fourteen years ago)

Either way, I'm keen to get back in.

JimD, Thursday, 18 August 2011 16:54 (fourteen years ago)

diversify with the cooking and it gets less boring. like with drinks and spicemaking and harvesting and animal kinship.

I'm a nerd and nerdy things happened (forksclovetofu), Thursday, 18 August 2011 16:58 (fourteen years ago)

just started with cooking too and yeah it seems like a lot of work

sonderangerbot, Thursday, 18 August 2011 16:59 (fourteen years ago)

ok i am literally just learning the shortest stuff i can so i am rocketing up the cooking charts

better learning 5 is a pretty awes skill

I dream of vodka sandwich (jjjusten), Thursday, 18 August 2011 17:45 (fourteen years ago)

i have been procrastinating doing Better Learning, as soon as i finish all the gardening/animal stuff that's my next pathway.
then teleportation. then finally mining/alchemy/tinkering.

I'm a nerd and nerdy things happened (forksclovetofu), Thursday, 18 August 2011 17:47 (fourteen years ago)

i think if i time this right, i might learn everything its possible to learn w/o using an emblem of anybody today

I dream of vodka sandwich (jjjusten), Thursday, 18 August 2011 17:49 (fourteen years ago)

nah wait herdkeeping still takes 1 hr 45 minutes

I dream of vodka sandwich (jjjusten), Thursday, 18 August 2011 17:49 (fourteen years ago)

Okay, there is still brilliant stuff. I just found a big rock formation that looks like a dragon that other glitches have turned into a shrine and left cryptic notes hinting at how to reach the seemingly-inaccessible top. Love these guys.

I'm a nerd and nerdy things happened (forksclovetofu), Thursday, 18 August 2011 19:10 (fourteen years ago)

a good chunk of the game is focused towards exploring and trying things to see what they can do; the quests also do a decent job of pointing you towards how various things can become more useful later on

career paths as i see them: cook, ebay nerd, dealer, miner, alchemist, teleporter, wandering do-gooder, homesteader, bartender, farmer, gasmaker (maybe?), warrior monk, engineer...

I'm a nerd and nerdy things happened (forksclovetofu), Thursday, 18 August 2011 19:54 (fourteen years ago)

cooking is a crazy amount of work and skills, seems to be the opposite of mining which gives you faster, better rewards and cash but is largely the same drudgery over and over again for grinding... depends which style you'd rather lean towards

also regret putting so much into teleportation so early, though i use it all the time, it's not really as essential as say, gardening I. also the focus orb is kinda useless at higher levels, though i guess you need to go down that tree for the rook attacks which is neat

queueing up mining IV for the break - though mining is boring, the money lets you do a lot more in general

Nhex, Thursday, 18 August 2011 20:00 (fourteen years ago)

mining 4 is great, but the rewards have been tinkered w/ since the last beta, and it's much less lucrative

a long time ago i used to be snush (remy bean), Thursday, 18 August 2011 20:11 (fourteen years ago)

gasmaking appears to be the least lucrative, least useful of the trades and skills

I'm a nerd and nerdy things happened (forksclovetofu), Thursday, 18 August 2011 20:18 (fourteen years ago)

despite having more cooking/farming/animal skills than mining, I spent much of yesterday mining, because I needed some emblems and the shrines seem to like rocks and gems much more than anything I can cook

(it is a bit of a bummer to put some new meal which contains a bunch of ingredients and is worth lots of energy in a shrine and have the giant be all "eh... 2 points")

the ascent of nyan (a passing spacecadet), Thursday, 18 August 2011 20:24 (fourteen years ago)

Oh no, it's going away again already? Was looking forward to a bank holiday weekend of glitching. (4pm PDT which I think is midnight Britisher summertime or 4 and a quarter hours away, says the rumour mill.)

In other news, I thought the 50 onions quest meant plant 50 packets of onion seeds, not harvest 50 onions, which actually took about 6 packets. I have a LOT of onions now.

yeah that happened to me a lot :/ but this time i queued up Better Learning IV just in time

i'm a little afraid that when the full game comes out, and everything has to scale up, they're just going to increase the time required to learn skills. i mean, can they really keep adding enough skills to keep it interesting? it looks like you can get everything in a month in this beta

at the same time, hoping some 50k or 100k houses arrive in Chakra Phool, i wanna be an Herbaliser

Nhex, Saturday, 27 August 2011 19:25 (fourteen years ago)

is there any evidence they're actually gonna scale up the skill learning?

come back to the five and dime remy bean, (remy bean), Saturday, 27 August 2011 19:26 (fourteen years ago)

not at all, just my fear for now. but the game will ultimately be F2P, so they need to keep churning out new material to keep people coming... i think the temptation to extend skill learn time will just be too great, as pretty much happens with every freemium/time-lapse/social game

Nhex, Saturday, 27 August 2011 19:30 (fourteen years ago)

Maybe. There was a good interview with Stewart, somewhere, where he said that's exactly what he wished wouldn't happen. He's also planning on introducing temples sometime soon.

I'm going to go mining/alchemy much earlier on than I did before

the tax avocado (DJP), Wednesday, 21 September 2011 15:50 (fourteen years ago)

also not going to waste any time on teleporting until I have the useful skills

the tax avocado (DJP), Wednesday, 21 September 2011 15:50 (fourteen years ago)

i figured i'd start animal harvesting skills right away, move into cooking which will be a breeze bc i'll now have super easy ways to get tons of ingredients, and then try out other skills (like alchemy/mining) that i didn't really get to before

Mordy, Wednesday, 21 September 2011 16:05 (fourteen years ago)

i think i will start by really meaning to get back into this and then never bothering

guh (jjjusten), Wednesday, 21 September 2011 16:07 (fourteen years ago)

Yeah, I regret that I didn't quite manage to try out alchemy or engineering or whatever last time, because I have no idea whether they're worth doing this time round or not. Will probably just play it safe and do things in much the same order as last time tbh.

I also regret that it didn't open yesterday (UK time) when I was on leave and as such I haven't been on since reset yet. Looking forward to getting home and glitching.

the ascent of nyan (a passing spacecadet), Wednesday, 21 September 2011 16:08 (fourteen years ago)

I think this is another beta round?

the tax avocado (DJP), Wednesday, 21 September 2011 17:32 (fourteen years ago)

But once the game is ready, beta testers will keep their stats?

polyphonic, Wednesday, 21 September 2011 17:33 (fourteen years ago)

yes, no more resets

going for mining/animal harvesting earlier this time too, i also made the mistake of going into the teleport/meditiation/piety trees last go around

alchemy tree is worth it because a) you should already be doing mining for the money and b) shrine powder is both awesome for donations and straight up selling for cash

OTOH, i know i have to get gardening and in there somewhere

also, did Better Learning I and II, probably gonna try to do the BL tree first, if i can afford it (mostly getting the emblem for III)

Nhex, Wednesday, 21 September 2011 17:51 (fourteen years ago)

gardening/cooking also kinda essential though...

Nhex, Wednesday, 21 September 2011 17:52 (fourteen years ago)

Cooking essential to doing other stuff. Can someone give me the run down on mining/alchemy?

Mordy, Wednesday, 21 September 2011 18:43 (fourteen years ago)

mining is a straight line, and you need Element Handling, Refining, Smelting, then Alchemy, Admixing/Intermed. Admixing (you can skip Alchemy II) to make powders

Nhex, Wednesday, 21 September 2011 19:02 (fourteen years ago)

If I don't want to be a cooking specialist, how far along into the cooking tree should I go before I stop?

polyphonic, Wednesday, 21 September 2011 19:06 (fourteen years ago)

What do you do w/ powders tho? (Besides donate them obv)

Mordy, Wednesday, 21 September 2011 19:13 (fourteen years ago)

shrine powder doubles the value of your donation. extremely hallowed shrine powder TRIPLES it

there's some other stuff like fertilidust (grows trees up a level), sneezing powder, sparkly powder, fecundity is nice, but they're more valuable as you're transfering your mineral assets to elements to powders (to money/donation)

Test ending in 3 hours already? I am a lucky person and only worked 2 days this week. What were the 2 days that glitch was running for? Fehhh. Though I suppose soon it won't turn off, ever, in theory.

(haven't had much time on since reset, kind of sucks the energy out going back to not having tools or ingredients or teleportation or a house, but on the other hand before the reset I was running out of things to do that I was actually interested in doing. Still, can't complain, it is cute and fun and free and I still intend to chuck them a few quid, I guess)

Nhex, Thursday, 22 September 2011 23:12 (fourteen years ago)

quick poll: of those of you who subscribed, which option did you go with?

Nhex, Thursday, 22 September 2011 23:12 (fourteen years ago)

i didn't do any mining before the reset, but everyone said that's where the money is, so i've focused mostly on that skill tree. i've still got a whole bunch of basic skills that i haven't bothered with yet.

i also ended up buying a house pretty early into the new test cycle, and found i could make a nice trickle of money auctioning off "your papers" to people who didn't want to bother learning the bureaucracy skill.

FLAWLESS STANCE, ATHLETIC BEAST, WINNER'S POSTURE (reddening), Friday, 23 September 2011 00:59 (fourteen years ago)

i went for the midrange subscription option

Dudley Daigle: Tugboat Captain (forksclovetofu), Friday, 23 September 2011 05:05 (fourteen years ago)

what are subscriber only options and customizations? do i have to buy credits on top of a subscription to take advantage of this?

Mordy, Friday, 23 September 2011 17:53 (fourteen years ago)

not really being sucked into this yet, but i'm just popping in and out to see if it'll click

Dios mio! This kid is FUN to hit! (Noodle Vague), Friday, 23 September 2011 17:53 (fourteen years ago)

also, are the only things to spend credits on wardrobe + vanity stuff? cause i'd love to throw this game some money but i really don't care about playing dress-up with my glitch at all.

Mordy, Friday, 23 September 2011 17:54 (fourteen years ago)

subscriber options are that you get credits primarily so yeah it's mostly vanity
but you also get a ton of transportation tokens, which makes life WAY easier for the first few months of the game
and you also get vouchers to vote on game content.
They're going to ask the community to guide what sort of content they roll out and subscribers get multiple votes.
but mostly i'm just giving them cash because i feel like i've definitely gotten sixty bucks worth of enjoyment out of this already.

Dudley Daigle: Tugboat Captain (forksclovetofu), Friday, 23 September 2011 19:17 (fourteen years ago)

not a bad way of looking at it forks. i think i've definitely gotten $30 worth of enjoyment out of it, but I don't know if I would really spend an extra $20-30 on credits ever... kinda torn, but i guess i'm leaning towards option B for the silliness of being able to try a new outfit on every month

mordy, if you want to spend less, you could just toss 'em some money for credits and then transfer those to TP tokens (which you'll probably use at some point)

Nhex, Saturday, 24 September 2011 01:12 (fourteen years ago)

slightly worried that if i keep playing the game someone will ring me up and ask me to do some mining for them.

i've got my character wearing a party dress and sandals, and i'm always amused when i set her to mining or smelting something. it's all so wonderfully clean! i wonder if we're going to find out at some point that we've been polluting the fuck out of the giants' brains.

i kinda got myself stuck re better learning. my learn times are so long for everything, including better learning, that i'm loathe to waste time doing better learning when it will take so long itself to learn. but now mining V is going to take like 9 days and probably 11-12 by the time i do it.

Mordy, Tuesday, 4 October 2011 19:52 (fourteen years ago)

also, snapshotting is ridiculous. my glitch already has that skill. it's command+shift+4.

remy bean, Tuesday, 4 October 2011 19:53 (fourteen years ago)

I made the mistake of not doing the higher-level Better Learnings until too late. Now I'm stuck on waiting a week for BLV. I think it'll be worth it in the end but it sucks not having any new quests.

emil.y, Tuesday, 4 October 2011 19:56 (fourteen years ago)

i am grbchv! by the way

(╯°□°)╯︵ ya, (╯°□°)╯︵ ya for real (gbx), Tuesday, 4 October 2011 20:02 (fourteen years ago)

i kinda feel like (probably wrongly) that there's no point to doing BL at this point at all and I should just do all the other skills instead. esp since as far as my brain works, 9 days for a skill and 12 days for a skill might as well be the same amount of time.

Mordy, Tuesday, 4 October 2011 20:12 (fourteen years ago)

I think with the way you're penalised for every new skill once you're past a certain point, BLV is worth it. Plus if they keep adding extra skills it may well be more like the difference between 9 days and three weeks by the end.

emil.y, Tuesday, 4 October 2011 20:21 (fourteen years ago)

i guess i could take the next month off the game or whatever and just run through the BL skills. these new penalties are a little frustrating and i know they're designed to - i guess - prolong enjoyment of the game. but they seem to have miscalculated bc instead of enjoyment being parceled out over a longer period of time instead now you get a lot of skills early and then less and less the more you play until eventually you're waiting a week between skills. it would be much better to have them all take X amount of time and leave them like that. as it's currently designed ppl are going to become less interested the longer they play. (i may have over-explained that, but i'm not totally sure how to articulate what seems to me to be a fundamental design flaw)

Mordy, Tuesday, 4 October 2011 20:23 (fourteen years ago)

God, I'm starting to get to skills that take two days. Can't imagine there are skills that take a week.

polyphonic, Tuesday, 4 October 2011 20:26 (fourteen years ago)

I kind of agree with you. I suppose it's a classic RPG bind: as you level and get skills, things are supposed to get easier. Yet to keep the player interested there has to be a challenge, so other things get harder. However, I'm not sure that extending skill learning times has the effect of an increased challenge, rather than an artificial obstacle. Having said that, though, I wouldn't mind so much if they hadn't taken out almost all of the non-skill related quests. I know it's not meant to be just a questing game, but without *any* of that motivation, I will get bored.

emil.y, Tuesday, 4 October 2011 20:29 (fourteen years ago)

(That was to Mordy, by the way)

emil.y, Tuesday, 4 October 2011 20:32 (fourteen years ago)

I made the mistake of not doing the higher-level Better Learnings until too late. Now I'm stuck on waiting a week for BLV.

Yeah, me too. Apparently they stop skills 20-30 incurring cumulative time penalties, which is too bad since I didn't get my first emblem of Lem to spend until I'd learned 40 (no idea how it got so high, the skill table still looks at least half unlearnt). Regretting my decision not to learn Mining: the giants do like their mining donations.

Meanwhile, Glitch got quite the savaging on RPS and I have to admit that even though I like the game I agree with bits of it.

I'm just glitched out atm, I guess, and everything feels a bit grindy to no real reward. Plus the screenshots reminded me how weird and pretty Ix and Uralia seemed the first time I went through and was charmed by Helga and the dancing crabs, and how the new areas are kind of dull and interchangeable in comparison, and got to feeling slightly bummed that apparently the designers would rather add yet more swampy areas and grey trees-on-crags areas with exactly the same wildlife and shops as the rest of the world instead of the quirky colourful stuff I had thought was the selling point. Oh well.

I am still enjoying the game and want to play it right now, and it bugs me that it takes so long to learn new skills. But that has the side effect of not allowing me to WOW out and forget to eat and stuff like that.

polyphonic, Tuesday, 4 October 2011 20:45 (fourteen years ago)

There’s a quest early on in the game where you have to go to a bureaucratic office filled with lizards obsessed with paperwork in order to fill out identity papers. To do this, I shit you not, you have to stand in line and wait to be seen. Just stand there, don’t press any controls and wait while yet another fucking progress bar fills up before the lizards call you forth. I don’t know if the developers think this sort of bullshit is funny, or maybe it’s supposed an ironic commentary on something like the sheer inanity of their game design, but it speaks of a sadistic intent that borders on the perverse.

That bullshit WAS funny. This dude is a moron.

polyphonic, Tuesday, 4 October 2011 20:45 (fourteen years ago)

yeah, if he doesn't get that (or the kafka reference) he's missing much of the point of the game.

My feeling is ... when you get bored, play something else!

polyphonic, Tuesday, 4 October 2011 20:58 (fourteen years ago)

I do agree with that, but... have you tried any of the community aspects? I joined the New Streets and Rook Attacks groups and have their chat rooms up in my sidebar so I get alerts when those things are happening (even though all I can do against the Rook currently is revive fallen creatures and add another click to the orbs of those with more skills). If you feel under-skilled for those you could buy tickets for the races or the game of crowns? Though I remember you said you had difficulty with jumping, so that might not be for you either. Or perhaps we could come up with an ilx group goal/activity?

emil.y, Tuesday, 4 October 2011 21:17 (fourteen years ago)

Which reminds me - apparently they tested group area building just before the reset, so that's something to look forward to... hopefully will come soon.

emil.y, Tuesday, 4 October 2011 21:18 (fourteen years ago)

I did some street projects in beta and they were fun, if a money-pit. Need more meditation skillz for rook attacks iirc. Yeah, I should probably investigate my Steam backlog instead of just refreshing ILX and the Glitch forums.

Just read the comments on that RPS interview and got a bit riled at the "there's a difference between people who play games and Gamers, for whom the history, legacy and culture of our passion is equally as important as the games themselves" thing was some bullshit. iirc trying to talk about computer game history with real gamers gets you a "stfu that older-than-last-week shit is ghey, who cares, grandma". Time to turn off the internet.

Learning Mining IV at the moment, it is taking the looongest. Final 24 hours of it though! Then it's either onto Better Learning V (argh....) or some of the Refining ones, with the aim of creating better donations for the gods, so Better Learning V can be sped up as much as possible by grinding for Lem.

Nhex, Friday, 18 November 2011 22:54 (fourteen years ago)

I've kind of taken a bit of a break - partly because I've barely been at home for the last couple of weeks, but to play it properly it is a bit of a timesink. Basically, there are a few things that people always suggest when you come to a standstill:

a) street building projects/rook attacks - fun, but rare enough to mean that if you concentrate solely on one of these you'll be bored for ages while waiting for them.

b) playing the market - I don't consider this to actually be fun at all, so... meh. Good if you like that sort of thing.

c) collections - cubimals, music boxes, icons. Again, it kind of depends on whether you like that sort of thing: personally I can see the fun side but it's very much the sort of thing I'd only go for once I run out of everything else to do.

d) achievements - there are bloody loads of these, so getting them all can be a good long-term goal.

e) sandboxing - player-generated quests, philanthropy, cubimal racing, dice games, role-play, treasure hunts... and pretty much whatever else you can think of to get up to. This is the direction I was heading in before I took a break, and it can be very fun indeed, but I think it needs some investment in the game and community before you see a point to it.

They haven't implemented group areas yet, have they? I don't know if our little gang of poxy fules will be active enough to really get going with it but I'm still quite excited by the prospect.

Mordy, Thursday, 15 November 2012 14:22 (thirteen years ago)

Awww, that is a shame. I think the post-game game really depended on immersing yourself in the community, and while I don't mind a dalliance with such things, I'm definitely more of a solo player, so it wasn't likely to work out for me without further non-sandbox things to get up to.

Their reasons seem pretty sound for closing, but I hope the developers find something more sustainable to work on, I'd love to see more from them.

A world where I can't play musicboxes to crabs any more suddenly seems a bit bleak. If there was some way to download just that part of the game as an offline copy and hoard it forever I would.

Just thinking of how I can currently download and play 99% of the beloved games of my 80s childhood to feel that nostalgic glow (there are only 1 or 2 games I remember which I totally can't find online) but the online multiplayer games of now will stay dead, not revisitable. Sad!

I played last night and while there wasn't a whole lot of ~new stuff~ that I kept tripping over or anything (some new regions, new "memories", sloths + foxes are cute) I definitely felt like I was going to miss it, but unfortunately for Glitch I miss it as an abstract thing that existed for occasional dipping into, rather than a thing I wanted to pay premium subscription rates to play every day. and someone said on chat that it costs like 300-500k in server costs per month to run so yeah, those two things don't match up.

it does look really nice and sound really nice and stuff, though. RIP

Kinda sad, kinda bitter post-portem interview (don't think I've seen so much swearing in any of Butterfield's others)

The time it took to iterate the game to the point where it was fun was a challenge hampered by production problems, says Butterfield.

By the time the shutdown was announced, "there were more things that were fun in an immediate and obvious way," he says. "It's not like we weren't looking for them, but sometimes, shit that you build, it turns out, it's not so fun."

Nice to see that a least a couple of these ideas were used (like making the progress bar less boring), I'm only about halfway through the list

The news that investors think stoot's new enterprise collaborative chat platform is worth a billion dollars (!) got me digging around:

These guys seem to be making some progress on resurrecting Glitch-as-was: http://elevengiants.com/

and I haven't played it yet (can't quite justify buying a new game when I've got so many unplayed) but kukubee did the art on this and I love the look of it: Road Not Taken (website / Steam)

Aaand thanks to The Yellow Kid on the Humble Bundle/GOG/Steam bargains thread for alerting me to this being available on the Humble Weekly Bundle for $4.44 (at time of typing)

still haven't played it, will fix that in 5 minutes if it runs on my laptop, otherwise hopefully at the weekend

from the FT’s “six businesses finding an upside in the pandemic”

Discord is the kind of app that would normally drive teachers crazy. A gaming-focused way to chat using text, voice and video, it already had 300m registered users and tens of millions of daily users before the pandemic hit.

Then in March, just as Zoom was taking over the corporate videoconferencing world, Discord found an unlikely new role as a home schooling aid.

In France, state-provided online education tools struggled as traffic surged in the early days of the lockdown. Discord was able to handle the influx of users much better, making it a de facto alternative for many teachers.

According to App Annie, which tracks app stores, Discord jumped into the top 10 most downloaded iPhone apps in France during March, with similar growth in Spain and Germany.

By mid-May, it remains in the top 50 mobile apps overall in the US and several European countries, in many cases ranking above more established rivals such as Skype, Twitch and Google Meet.

That is no mean feat for a five-year-old start-up. Like Slack, the business messaging app that began as a side project of a video game called Glitch, Discord’s founders Jason Citron and Stanislav Vishnevskiy started out building a games development studio, Hammer & Chisel, before moving into messaging.

The business has raised about $280m in private financing so far and is said to be in talks to raise new funds at a valuation that could exceed $3bn.

It is also racing to update its product to capitalise on the new demand beyond its core audience. In March, it increased the number of people who could watch a “Go Live” broadcast from 10 to 50, making it more useful for teachers.
