While forks wraps up the year that came, let's look forward to the year to come. Games Radar listed 100 here (http://www.gamesradar.com/f/the-100-most-anticipated-games-of-2011/a-20110114102929585088/p-11). I'm polling their top 50. (Skipped Shadow of Colossus + Ico remakes for PS3 bc remakes also fuck a PS3 exclusivity.)

Thinking that if she hasn't already heard of it, Professor Layton vs. Ace Attorney is super Abbott-bait.

Mordy, Sunday, 23 January 2011 16:21 (fourteen years ago)

Mass Effect 2?

David Warner (Princess TamTam), Sunday, 23 January 2011 16:23 (fourteen years ago)

I have heard of it, Mordy. And I am insanely stoked! The problem with 50-item polls is I get excited about something and conclude nothing further down on the list can beat it, which is why I voted for "The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time 3DS" rather than my Platonic ideal that you identified for me.

Stop Non-Erotic Cabaret (Abbbottt), Sunday, 23 January 2011 16:24 (fourteen years ago)

Man, that list really has me salivating - I hadn't thought about how many of those are actually coming this year!

Nhex, Sunday, 23 January 2011 16:26 (fourteen years ago)

Oops, ME2 = ME3.

Mordy, Sunday, 23 January 2011 16:27 (fourteen years ago)

why is Ocarina of Time 3DS on there if you're too cool for remakes

David Warner (Princess TamTam), Sunday, 23 January 2011 16:27 (fourteen years ago)

Maybe a mod can fix it xp

Mordy, Sunday, 23 January 2011 16:27 (fourteen years ago)

Feel like 3DS is gonna be a bigger shift than swapping Ico into HD quality.

Mordy, Sunday, 23 January 2011 16:28 (fourteen years ago)

Mods can't fix anything in a poll except for the title...the only way to do so would be to redo another poll & delete this one.

Stop Non-Erotic Cabaret (Abbbottt), Sunday, 23 January 2011 16:28 (fourteen years ago)

voted for DX3 - have low expectations for it, but it's the one im most curious about

David Warner (Princess TamTam), Sunday, 23 January 2011 16:28 (fourteen years ago)

i have expectations that 3DS is gonna blow my mind

Mordy, Sunday, 23 January 2011 16:28 (fourteen years ago)

my vote is for Skyrim. besides never missing a bethesda game set in the daggerfall-verse (even played that ridiculous adventure game Redguard) i read this 20 page preview of it in Game Informer and it sounds amazing

Mordy, Sunday, 23 January 2011 16:29 (fourteen years ago)

shit, i totally missed duke forever! i would've voted for that

David Warner (Princess TamTam), Sunday, 23 January 2011 16:30 (fourteen years ago)

marios balls in 3d. for 3ds

David Warner (Princess TamTam), Sunday, 23 January 2011 16:31 (fourteen years ago)

The viewing angle, which we actually commend during its two-dimensional presentation, drops to single-degree acceptability when the parallax display is put to use -- moving even just a little would cause the screen the flicker and the 3D effect to be lost or too muddled to enjoy. Expect to keep your arms locked in place while playing, and we'd advise against anyone trying to look over your shoulder to follow along.

sounds like 'fun'

David Warner (Princess TamTam), Sunday, 23 January 2011 16:31 (fourteen years ago)

*arms tremble after being locked in place for 3 hour gaming sesh*

David Warner (Princess TamTam), Sunday, 23 January 2011 16:31 (fourteen years ago)

I am also really excited for Dragon Quest VI, which I don't think was ever released outside of Japan before.

Stop Non-Erotic Cabaret (Abbbottt), Sunday, 23 January 2011 16:32 (fourteen years ago)

uh oh. that doesn't sound promising xp

Mordy, Sunday, 23 January 2011 16:32 (fourteen years ago)

i'm completely paralyzed, but at least i can enjoy the crystal clear quality of this 3DS

is American McGee working on the new alice? + if he is, how did they get him not to slap his own name on the title?

Portal 2, but would vote Layton v Attorney if I believed there was even a 1% chance that it is going to make it to Europe in 2011. Also doubting that Catherine is going to make it here ever which is a shame.

if, Sunday, 23 January 2011 21:11 (fourteen years ago)

oddly enough, all games on my list are the third games in their series:

Paper Mario 3DS (looks like more of a sequel to Thousand Year Door than Super Paper Mario)
Motorstorm Apocalypse (anyone who doesn't want to go balls-deep in this is clearly an enemy of freedom)
Diablo 3
MGS3 3DS
Uncharted 3
Deus Ex 3

toastmodernist, Sunday, 23 January 2011 23:52 (fourteen years ago)

will theoretically play these when i have time:

dead space 2
batman
portal 2 (kinda worried that this will be over-complicated compared to the original)
l.a. noire (looks dope but will it be fun?)

bows don't kill people, arrows do (Jordan), Monday, 24 January 2011 18:50 (fourteen years ago)

first portal was such an amazing experience, i couldnt help but be pessimistic when i heard about a sequel - guess that means it could surprise me, though

marios balls in 3d for 3ds (Princess TamTam), Monday, 24 January 2011 18:55 (fourteen years ago)

I got to a point where my PC gaming abilities (I don't have any; last FPS I played before Portal was Doom) stopped me from finishing Portal. I figured out what I needed to do but wasn't WASD/mouse coordinated enough to pull it off. Hoping Portal 2 on PS3 will let me finish.

EZ Snappin, Monday, 24 January 2011 19:00 (fourteen years ago)

Motorstorm Apocalypse looks like Split/Second a little souped-up, but we can talk on Split/Second on the 2010 poll thread in a few days I reckon.

Euler, Monday, 24 January 2011 19:53 (fourteen years ago)

did you play Pacific Rift? it's easily my favorite racer of this generation, and I completely loved Burnout Paradise.

yachts on the reg, sex on the reg (jamescobo), Monday, 24 January 2011 20:51 (fourteen years ago)

No, I tend to play arcade racers a long time before moving on, & before Split/Second I was still playing Pure; & before that Burnout: Revenge. I never tried Paradise.

Euler, Monday, 24 January 2011 20:55 (fourteen years ago)

i already voted in this but i only just realized a new elder scrolls game is coming out and i would vote for that. every game bethesda has ever made has had all kinds of horrible obnoxious problems games from other developers never have, but -- except for the two fallout games which were total holding patterns -- they have this insistence on trying as hard as they can in every game to fix all the previous game's problems that is really charming. their ambition's charming too: they want to use EVERY BIT OF PROCESSING POWER THEY CAN SCROUNGE to make their huge ragged games AS DEEP AS THEY CAN. i was just reading a preview of it where the designer talked about the leveling and the dialogue -- two mechanics bethesda has spent over fifteen years swinging around desperately trying every semi-disastrous thing they can to get right -- and his enthusiasm for This Time, No This Time Really was weirdly infectious. i feel like the game's gonna be morrowind-level rather than oblivion-level -- a very good thing.

granted i have read exactly one preview. it was in game informer. my housemate mysteriously started getting game informer; i am living in my fantasy house from ninth grade.

difficult listening hour, Thursday, 27 January 2011 06:22 (fourteen years ago)

like, bethesda's company slogan might as well be We Promise What We Can't Deliver, but there's some really subtle difference (for me) between the way they fail and the way, say, peter molyneux fails, that makes me just love them to death.

difficult listening hour, Thursday, 27 January 2011 06:24 (fourteen years ago)

(also i see the plot of this one involves civil wars and succession crises and nationalist movements, like morrowind, instead of demons attacking from hell, like oblivion. points.)

difficult listening hour, Thursday, 27 January 2011 06:27 (fourteen years ago)

feel this is all pretty OTM. articulated a vague positivity i've always felt toward Bethesda.

Ni no kuni would've got my vote if it was on the poll. But instead I'm kind of stumped, there are easily 15-20 other things on there that I'm hugely looking forward to.

JimD, Thursday, 27 January 2011 08:07 (fourteen years ago)

eg I'm not sure why I'm excited about a new SSX but I am.

Might as well just vote for ME3 though. Cos it's in London!

JimD, Thursday, 27 January 2011 08:10 (fourteen years ago)

DLH - the new elder scrolls features a new engine, so maybe they can deliver this time? we'll find out.

Crysis 2 (PS3, 360, PC) perhaps
Tom Raider (PS3, 360, PC) i am tom and i endorse this game
Silent Hill: Downpour (PS3, 360)

nanoflymo (ledge), Thursday, 27 January 2011 14:44 (fourteen years ago)

lol, i read that same Game Informer preview. it's like, "remember radiant AI? this time it's going to be AWESOME."

Mordy, Thursday, 27 January 2011 15:46 (fourteen years ago)

i am strangely filled with expectations of failure for most of the ones i would be excited about. portal 2 in particular.

O_o-O_0-o_O (jjjusten), Thursday, 27 January 2011 16:17 (fourteen years ago)

gi skyrim preview made me eh mostly because of the fact that they seemed to be trumpeting this amazing new concept called dual wielding. also because plotwise and mechanicswise it seems like the result of chinstroking while looking at the success of dragon age.

O_o-O_0-o_O (jjjusten), Thursday, 27 January 2011 16:19 (fourteen years ago)

and yes i realize the inherent stupidity of saying "hey now this fantasy RPG seems somehow derivative and not full of new ideas"

O_o-O_0-o_O (jjjusten), Thursday, 27 January 2011 16:20 (fourteen years ago)

Portal 2, followed by Uncharted 3 and (cautiously) L.A. Noire

congratulations (n/a), Thursday, 27 January 2011 16:24 (fourteen years ago)

why are people so cautious about LA Noire? haven't they earned a little trust from GTA + RDR?

Mordy, Thursday, 27 January 2011 16:29 (fourteen years ago)

other than that i guess my list (with caveats) would be

Batman: Arkham City (could easily get fucked up by putting it in a pseudo open world city thing)
Portal 2 (never trust a game where they add multiplayer for no reason)
L.A. Noire (spectre of interactive novel hangs heavy over this one)
Dead Space 2 (HATED the demo, but i think i hated the demo for the first one so)
Deus Ex: Human Revolution (when prior enstallments get so much right, this could easily get so much wrong)
Bulletstorm (could be stupid as hell, downloading the demo tonight)
Dragon Age II (never finished the first one)
Call of Duty 8 / Modern Warfare 3 (black ops sucked, could be glorified map pack)
Crysis 2 (see deus ex)
XCOM (see crysis 2)
Red Faction: Armageddon (danger of dark and brooding ruining sunny blow shit up vibe of the last one)
I Am Alive (looooong development cycle without much to show for it so far)
Silent Hill: Downpour (uh its a silent hill game, which is only one step up in consistent quality from being an alone in the dark game)

O_o-O_0-o_O (jjjusten), Thursday, 27 January 2011 16:32 (fourteen years ago)

to answer you mordy, there is something about the "CHECK OUT OUR AWESOME FACE ANIMATION!" push and the constant yammering about how it is going to be steeped in investigation not combat that i keep thinking of stuff like Myst and other point and click stuff. which would be awesome if it was 1996. i just get this funky Heavy Rain vibe from it, which is not appealing to me at all.

O_o-O_0-o_O (jjjusten), Thursday, 27 January 2011 16:35 (fourteen years ago)

yah, the heavy rain burn lingers

i turned my head n boom I saw that tweet #wow (forksclovetofu), Thursday, 27 January 2011 16:36 (fourteen years ago)

ok, but this is rockstar. no way they make a game and leave the game part out

Mordy, Thursday, 27 January 2011 16:43 (fourteen years ago)

xp -- yeah i laughed about "radiant plot" or whatever, both because the descriptions of it in the preview were acting like it was emergent and innovative when really it was just a bunch of prewritten quests with more complicated triggers, and because lol radiant ai we all know how that worked. the company doesn't really innovate or anything, even when they think they do -- they just try to Go Bigger than everyone else, and they always end up sloppy and bug-ridden and suspension-of-disbelief-fatal, but i still always get stirred by the Big.

i just like that bethesda despite being this huge successful game company that gets 100s for every game from the lazy half (or more-than-half) of the game-critic world is nevertheless releasing previews where they are actually saying "we're not zooming in on character's faces and making them stare directly into the camera anymore!" because they now realize that was ridiculous. like, their attitude towards their previous games seems to be skeptical. which is cool and good for design, even when they go totally insane (like in oblivion where they wanted to make a persuasion/speech system more intuitive than morrowind's die rolls and ended up with the World's Stupidest Minigame, as hard to lose as it was to enjoy).

difficult listening hour, Thursday, 27 January 2011 16:49 (fourteen years ago)

Speaking of radiant things, Radiant Silvergun XBLA is due this year too, isn't it?

JimD, Thursday, 27 January 2011 16:51 (fourteen years ago)

if LA Noire really is just a pointy-clicky investigative game, im gonna be first in line to get it

marios balls in 3d for 3ds (Princess TamTam), Thursday, 27 January 2011 16:52 (fourteen years ago)

It's not. It's got drivey shooty bits too.

have we learned nothing from the CSI demo

O_o-O_0-o_O (jjjusten), Thursday, 27 January 2011 18:14 (fourteen years ago)

why are people so cautious about LA Noire? haven't they earned a little trust from GTA + RDR?

mainly because I'm not a huge GTA fan

congratulations (n/a), Thursday, 27 January 2011 19:00 (fourteen years ago)

OK after watching a stream of The Last Story am now super hyped for this. seems to be a squad based action rpg with strategy elements, and tuned more to western tastes (which hopefully makes it more likely to be localised?). also does that thing when you're running around & the characters chat amongst themselves which i <3

Voted Skyrim despite being utterly fucking convinced it'll have (a) 6482836638182636473828266337 bugs and (b) invisible walls again.

Basically I just want to say 'excuse me while I rim the sky' every time I go to play it.

Gaming is reaching a singularity here shortly.

الله basedأكبر (forksclovetofu), Monday, 7 February 2011 14:19 (fourteen years ago)

I hope all of the things I want to play in 2011 don't come out until like June, when I'll actually have time to play them. I'm still catching up on 2010 and 2009 (!) games here.

Mozart - The Last Secret

"It's 1788 and Mozart is in Prague. Here he is giving the inaugural showing of his famous opera, Don Giovanni. The plaudits he receives are universal, but very quickly the events that are shaking the capital of Bohemia will take his mind off the music. Far from the footlights, a terrible conspiracy is underway, designed to dethrone Joseph II, Austro-Hungarian Emperor and Mozart's benefactor. Left bereft and manipulated, the musical prodigy finds himself plunged into the heart of the conflict. With murders, plotting and occult ceremonies going on all around, only his genius will allow him to extricate himself from the situation."

lol i'd play the hell out of this

I am most looking forward to Desktop Dungeons imo!

Gravel Puzzleworth, Monday, 7 February 2011 15:53 (fourteen years ago)

are they making a commercial release?

الله basedأكبر (forksclovetofu), Monday, 7 February 2011 16:06 (fourteen years ago)

did anyone play the Catherine demo? apparently the battle system is somehow reminiscent of Q*Bert and I am suddenly intrigued.

are they making a commercial release?

I wish they'd make a DS version; I'd love to play this with a joypad rather than keys + mouse

yachts on the reg, sex on the reg (jamescobo), Monday, 7 February 2011 19:23 (fourteen years ago)

Hey wait, how come there isn't a version of Q*Bert for the iPad!

I would play the shit out of it.

from what i understand Desktop Dungeons is getting a commercial release - pretty sure iPhone too, in addition to the PC/Mac versions. they seem to be a bit skittish on nailing it down (understandably considering what just happened with that clone)

Nhex, Tuesday, 8 February 2011 04:59 (fourteen years ago)

I don't get roguelikes.

If I actually trusted that Jagged Alliance remake to actually come out this time, it's shoot to the top of my list. What a great game when it came out.

I don't tend to anticipate sequels as much as I do new properties.

aw no votes for Battlefield 3. i will joyfully anticipate this one.

two months pass...

maybe i am looking in the wrong places but i have no come across much buzz about dungeon siege 3. i was kinda hopeful about this but now i wonder. is it not looking good? i guess if it is coming out end of may they have a few weeks to rev up the promotion machine.

Roberto Spiralli, Tuesday, 19 April 2011 23:33 (fourteen years ago)

I am kind of curious about it too. The first one was a decent game, and I find it weird that Obsidian is doing the third game, but interesting.

Nhex, Wednesday, 20 April 2011 11:55 (fourteen years ago)

i consider the first dungeon siege to be one of my most hated games ever. that one really made me reconsider my personal policy to finish any game i start.

cum dude (Princess TamTam), Wednesday, 20 April 2011 12:10 (fourteen years ago)

im generally curious about anything obsidian does though so idk

cum dude (Princess TamTam), Wednesday, 20 April 2011 12:10 (fourteen years ago)

no surprise, but Last Guardian delayed to 2012

Alderaan Duran (Will M.), Wednesday, 20 April 2011 22:46 (fourteen years ago)

pretty pumped about this game

http://brinkthegame.com/

have some faith in the fact that they moved the release date up a week.. could it be that a game that is actually ready gets released to the public?

strongly recommend. unless you're a bitch (mayor jingleberries), Wednesday, 4 May 2011 16:53 (fourteen years ago)

four weeks pass...

think me + friend are gonna be buying Hunted: The Demon's Flange today. full coop campaign just sounds like a treat but the reviews as expected are coming out a little flat. anyone with some insider knowledge on this that might sway me towards or away from it, your input would be appreciated.

Roberto Spiralli, Thursday, 2 June 2011 12:47 (fourteen years ago)

two months pass...

^did not buy this, looked terrible

so, i came into possession of a free copy of m@tt's rag and this game DISHONORED looks like it could be extremely fuckin relevant to my interests. anticipating for 2012.

Roberto Spiralli, Tuesday, 2 August 2011 17:13 (fourteen years ago)

Too bad Brink and Bulletstorm really crapped out

Nhex, Tuesday, 2 August 2011 17:50 (fourteen years ago)

My post upthread is a good example of how the Brink developers fooled the shit out of everyone. "Were moving up the release date because the game is super fucked up anyway and we might as well start duping you now."

strongly recommend. unless you're a bitch (mayor jingleberries), Tuesday, 2 August 2011 19:27 (fourteen years ago)

Bulletstorm is awesome u haters
