Apparently 2008 is going to be a really good year for games that play with 2d/3d space...

Jeff LeVine, Wednesday, 20 February 2008 00:34 (eighteen years ago)

Those mid-jump perspective shifts broke my brane.

Looks fun though. And the music's lovely.

JimD, Wednesday, 20 February 2008 01:11 (eighteen years ago)

man i almost wanted to cry when i saw that this morning, this game plays on my nostalgia in exactly the right way. the music! the sprites! the engrish! so perfect.

Will M., Wednesday, 20 February 2008 18:16 (eighteen years ago)

i'ma watch it ALL OVER AGAIN

hey, is there even info on where/ho this is coming out? psn? pc? xbla? psp? ds? sega genesis?

Will M., Wednesday, 20 February 2008 18:17 (eighteen years ago)

No official release date. It looks like it may be coming soon though. Their official site says, "With GDC only a few more days away, we have been busting our collective ass getting all sorts of things done in time for Fez. We’ll have some pretty big news about the future of the game to announce pretty soon."

I think it's going to be released to PC first?

http://www.kokoromi.org/

Jeff LeVine, Wednesday, 20 February 2008 18:31 (eighteen years ago)

oh fuck, it's those guys! i think they're here in mtl!

Will M., Wednesday, 20 February 2008 18:55 (eighteen years ago)

there's a link to montreal mirror in their blog so i guess you're right

http://www.montrealmirror.com/2008/010308/news2.html

game looks great and i'd love to play something like that in 3d (ant attack 2008). not entirely sure whether the rotate / ignore z depth thing is genius or a gimmick though.

koogs, Thursday, 21 February 2008 16:39 (eighteen years ago)

> Fish calls them trixels

how is a trixel different from a voxel? (actually, they are more like tiles than pixels)

koogs, Thursday, 21 February 2008 16:42 (eighteen years ago)

well, apparently this game is over a year away from being released after all! It's being developed in xna so I guess it has a good chance of showing up on the xbox maybe. Apparently the game is only the one level so far... I think it's going to be a looong wait

Jeff LeVine, Sunday, 24 February 2008 18:28 (eighteen years ago)

where did you hear that it's >1 year? cos apparently getting to the point they're at took them 3 months from concept to where it's at now, so they're working on a pretty agile schedule...

Will M., Monday, 25 February 2008 16:30 (eighteen years ago)

From a Phil Fish (the creator, I guess) post on gaf...

-this version is being made on XNA. draw your own conclusions.
-we're thinking it should be done in about a year. possibly more.
-its no longer a kokoromi project, it now a POLYTRON project, which is the (actually registered) company me and 6955 (music) have just started.
-its more SMG than SPM.
-i shared my hostel room with petri purho, creator of crayon physics.
-GDC was batshit fucking loco.

Has there been any new news about this? Something at E3 maybe?

two reasons i'll never play this game: looks lame, the creator is a cunt.

zverotic discourse (jim in glasgow), Saturday, 14 April 2012 23:57 (fourteen years ago)

it is... picky. very picky. there's sort of a lack of natural engaging joyful gaming? i dunno. some games grab you and put you in a world and you feel engaged and like I NEED TO SAVE THIS WORLD but this is more like an immensely pretty rubik's cube

boy, was that Dan Fielding hungry for some cake! (forksclovetofu), Sunday, 15 April 2012 00:08 (fourteen years ago)

Looks lame? I dont think so! I love the 8 bit artwork and the 2d as 3d cleverness!

This game is fantastic.

polyphonic, Wednesday, 25 April 2012 07:05 (fourteen years ago)

Just finished this. Loved it, although I kind of wish that it had made you go past some of the places with bigger code hints early in the game. Will go to explore the bits left over some time soon I guess.

if, Saturday, 28 April 2012 21:57 (fourteen years ago)

just got my main game-playing friend to buy this and spent a v satisfying first hour or so going 'coo' and 'wait maybe if you rotated left? sorry, the other left'

c sharp major, Sunday, 29 April 2012 03:10 (fourteen years ago)

seriously this game is ADORABLE, and really fun for co-operative puzzle-solving (if you enjoy that sort of thing).

the treasure-chest noise and talking hypercube are quite zelda, aren't they

c sharp major, Sunday, 29 April 2012 13:57 (fourteen years ago)

this game is great. We deciphered the alphabet the other day.

raw feel vegan (silby), Monday, 30 April 2012 01:44 (fourteen years ago)

I'm enjoying this too, but I'm just focused on cubes I can see grabbing. All the deciphering stuff, no way I'm going to be able to wrap my head around it.

Jeff, Monday, 30 April 2012 14:29 (fourteen years ago)

this is so great - admittedly i love cryptograms and "aha!" gaming, but i don't know if a video game has ever given me the feeling of satisfaction i've gotten from this game a dozen times already (and i'm only ~100% complete, ie halfway through)

my only complaint is that it takes a while in gameplay terms before it totally reveals itself - but once it does, holy crap

scream blahula scream (govern yourself accordingly), Friday, 4 May 2012 02:07 (fourteen years ago)

I don't understand the cryptogram part of the game at all. Does it click at some point?

polyphonic, Friday, 4 May 2012 02:15 (fourteen years ago)

yeah - (attn: spoilers...)

eventually you stumble across an in-game machine that teaches the pentomino/input mappings, and another etched tablet that contains every letter in the in-game alphabet as part of a common phrase/pangram

i forget where the number system gets introduced but i actually wound up cracking it myself really early in gameplay - visually it's not hard to understand

there's a ton of backtracking to come after you figure these things out, obviously, but that's half the fun of it imo

scream blahula scream (govern yourself accordingly), Friday, 4 May 2012 03:18 (fourteen years ago)

i have this now and i absolutely love it

O_o-O_O-o_O (jjjusten), Wednesday, 29 August 2012 18:35 (thirteen years ago)

very amused by the meta-achievement, although i am worried that i might have triggered it a little early on

O_o-O_O-o_O (jjjusten), Wednesday, 29 August 2012 18:36 (thirteen years ago)

if it's the one i think, don't worry, you can do it whenever. it gives you a few easy clues to get it.

#1 Thwartstop Prospect (Will M.), Wednesday, 29 August 2012 22:15 (thirteen years ago)

hands down the best downloadable 360 game i have ever seen

O_o-O_O-o_O (jjjusten), Wednesday, 5 September 2012 17:49 (thirteen years ago)

i really loved it until it ate my save game. twice. the programmer dude (who is not phil fish) was pleasantly apologetic in an email so i'm not real pissed about it but i am wary of getting my heart broken again.

adam, Wednesday, 5 September 2012 17:57 (thirteen years ago)

oh man, considering the stacked progression in this game i would be apoplectic with rage if my save game got eaten. i think the only other game in recent memory that got the puzzle/platform combo this right was the portal stuff, and the puzzles are actually in many ways even more rewarding in this one. it just seems incredibly full of stuff to do and new surprises and this crazy feel of endurance in the long run - idk how many hours i have in so far, but i def feel like i have barely scratched the surface. also, for what is functionally a sidescroller, every world has a different feel or trick, and it has that rare feeling of self-discovery and skill boosting w/o handholding or cheap tricks to hold you back - its killer in every way. and huge!

O_o-O_O-o_O (jjjusten), Wednesday, 5 September 2012 18:06 (thirteen years ago)

you know it really didn't do anything for me

This cad needs a cordial introduction to Eugene of Oxbow. (forksclovetofu), Wednesday, 5 September 2012 18:13 (thirteen years ago)

i think we differ a lot on smaller d/l stuff tho? i know there was something recently you were really into and then i showed up w/my usual deep analysis of "hey i played the demo of this and it was fucking crap".

O_o-O_O-o_O (jjjusten), Wednesday, 5 September 2012 18:17 (thirteen years ago)

Once I beat the main game I had no desire to figure out any of the cryptogram stuff, but I loved the first part, definitely getting a vote from me in C+P

pun lovin criminal (polyphonic), Wednesday, 5 September 2012 18:18 (thirteen years ago)

i was kind of dreading the sorta metagame stuff (and i am not deep into it yet so i should prob stfu in case it ends up sucking) but i feel like theres a really natural curve from "oh hey this is a clever platformer" to "wtf is up with all these repeated symbols" to "huh i wonder what happens if i put this block here according to this pattern OH SHIT WHOA" that sorta smooths out the transition to the big picture crypto stuff. it feels really well integrated and natural to follow that path.

O_o-O_O-o_O (jjjusten), Wednesday, 5 September 2012 18:21 (thirteen years ago)

yeah, we go different directions on ome of this stuff

This cad needs a cordial introduction to Eugene of Oxbow. (forksclovetofu), Wednesday, 5 September 2012 18:43 (thirteen years ago)

bant me til I fart (cozen), Sunday, 6 January 2013 13:26 (thirteen years ago)

worried the only thing there'd be to the gameplay is rotate until the solution is obv

bant me til I fart (cozen), Sunday, 6 January 2013 13:27 (thirteen years ago)

the game has clever puzzle platforming design, but it's really the whole visual package, direction, story-telling, music, the colors!, the intangible attitudes and so on that's kicking my ass and face. this game was clearly made by a madman, and i love it for that

Nhex, Sunday, 6 January 2013 18:12 (thirteen years ago)

two weeks pass...

"beat" it; not sure if i really want to go down the rabbit hole with the cryptogram stuff or just move on with my life. err, "life"

"Gents," Beer said. "You were the guys who did Indie Game: the Movie. And some of you looked relatively normal in it, one of you looked like a total tosspot in it. But you can't have it both ways. You're successful game designers — you're 'indie' game designers — hurrah, good for you, you fucking hipsters."

Soon after the podcast was posted, Phil Fish posted on Twitter, "I fucking hate this industry" , told Marcus Beer over twitter to kill himself, and then asked for a public apology.

Later in the day, Phil then locked his twitter account and canceled Fez 2, saying "I'm done. Fez 2 is canceled. Goodbye."
