At the risk of coming across all fanboy it's about effing time Nintendo got with the HD generation, hello 2006 and all that.

Also remember this Project Café dealio is probably nothing more than an official leak with a weird-arse controller concept chucked in just to throw everyone off the scent.

The VMU worked out all right since it was on the standard memory card anyway. With the DS/GBA connectivity, though, it was expecting people to buy $100 controllers to play 4P Zelda. (That said, Pac Man Vs. was awesome.) If it's standard with the new Nintendo system that would be great, but probably also raise the price of extra controllers significantly, I'd gather.

For me, what this means is that I will probably get a PS3 right after E3 - there have already been sales popping up on all three consoles lately, the retailers have likely been clued in.

Can't really see the point of a controller that can be used as a portable tbh. If that's what I wanted, I'd get a 3DS (presumably the next gen Nintendo will have connectivity to the 3DS), so then why have a complicated controller? I'm going to be looking at the TV screen, not a small screen in my hands. It's rumoured to be a touchscreen, but then that just makes it the modern equiv of these...

if it was a small screen that had your inventory or map or something then HUDs would not be needed any more. kind of like the bottom screen in a lot of DS games? can see that being quite useful. imagine Fallout with a Pipboy in your hand!

well, no -- for most ppl where they hold the pad is a ways outside of their peripheral vision -- it was okay when it was your vague indication of health in resident evil, but it wouldn't work for quake or whatever

as with the extra screen in ds games, a lot of the time, it feels like a good idea that good ideas about how to implement don't come along very often - & so the question is whether the extra costs in hardware (and in just plain looking goofy) can be justified when only one in (x) games is going to come up with anything for it

i can see a controller based screen working as a surrogate for real world devices - say in GTA, your mobile/pager is ringing in your hand, you see a message saying "get to X as quick as possible" from your boss. you get into a car & the controller screen turns into a satnav, with the route marked out etc etc. none of this is going to happen of course.

I don't know that the costs for the controllers really need to be astronomical if they are touch screen. What's an iPod touch, like £100 or so? When the Wii came out it was £30 for a remote and £15 for a nunchuck, PS3 controllers still seem to mostly sit around the £45 mark, only 260 controllers seem to be frequently cheap in sales, and even they have a high RRP.

Take the iPod touch materials, you probably don't need 8Gb of storage, or a camera, etc. You could feasibly get down to a similar price mark. I still don't know what they would really do with it though, other than it being like the DS bottom screen.

I'm interested to see what actually gets shown - if anything - at E3 though.

this is the fun part with all the crazy conjecture before the mundane reality sets in after the reveal. particularly enjoying all the deluded people with the "zomg graffix 5 times better than teh xbawx" after IGN said that the console is "significantly more powerful than the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360". i mean, IGN ffs.

Wii was the first motion device really and had major cultural importance as a generation bridging system. Can't imagine what PS4 will do to match that.
And yeah, maybe the CD wasn't the most important thing about the PS1 (though it really was to me! and many folks i know!) but the PS1 also was a massive leap forward in quality and capability of games both in size, graphics and complexity. Again, the PS4 is unlikely to make skyrim look like bushido blade.

xxp Well, I already dig my PS3 a lot -- maybe I'm totally alone with this, but to me it feels like a luxury video game system compared to the utilitarian/graphically inferior Xbox and gimmicky Wii -- and this new one looks like it addresses the one major issue I have with it (the often horrible update/download system), adds a couple things I'm really happy to see (all games free to demo, the ability to somewhat 'stream' games), has graphics that very well may provide the first actually photorealistic games, enough processing to do all these cool urban games, etc. Also, it looks like they're really trying to make it very easy for developers to jump onboard or codevelop for PS4/PC, and if they do anything with Blizzard beyond Diablo I think Sony's stock is going way up tbh. And I'm v. happy they are focusing on capabilities rather than control gimmicks. I mean I guess to an extent it looks like they are just kind of throwing everything into this system, but I got the impression during the conference that they are actually focusing on user experience and games first and foremost here.

I dunno, I guess maybe I'm buying into the hype, but I think this thing could be a winner.

My guess would be either a) this is complete fabrication or b) it's one of those release-leak-judge-reaction-decide-whether-we-could-get-away-with-it things or c) worst case scenario it's built into devkits (which would make some sense) but someone's wrongly assumed that means it'll be in final retail units.

It seems like it's the way they're going to go, maybe because piracy was such a bigger problem on the 360 than on the PS3. But if Sony doesn't have the same kind of always on scheme (and I don't think they've yet said they absolutely won't), it seems like having a more restricted system like that would really hurt the consoles sales (more than any potental piracy) if all the next gen consoles aren't doing it.

You do have to connect to steam the first time you launch a game you bought on steam or a game that uses steamworks.

If the 360 does something like that, it's probably not really a dealbreaker for me as I usually have my consoles online anyway & it's hard to imagine not having an internet connection at home, unless I was so broke that I wouldn't be buying new video games anyway. But if they go with a system where you always have to be connected (or have to have a connection check every three minutes), I would probably skip as I can see it causing so many problems (xbox servers being down, my isp being down or dropping) and aggravations...

If the Steam Box DRM is more of a PITA than Steam on a PC it'll be a major disincentive to buy a Steam Box, and I think Valve are aware of that so it's unlikely to happen. Could also turn into a big selling point if both MS and Sony roll out always online systems.

I guess the thing that worries me the most about this possible always on DRM is not even being able to launch games in the future. It's already a drag when games lose their multiplayer features because the servers are taken down (sometimes just after a year or two), but now you won't be able to play old single player games either? It sounds crazy...

I live in the UK, and if I had a console that checked to see if it was online every three minutes, it'd be refusing to let me play games a lot. This could only really work in the US/Japan/Korea, but then people in those countries are going to be "WTF? Why does this draconian crap only apply to us?"

Personally, my internet- beyond my control- goes down commonly, unexpectedly, for minutes at a time. Normally it doesn't matter that much, as I don't play a ton of multiplayer these days. But it would be a nightmare for me to have that every-three-minutes-DRM check. Definite dealbreaker for me.

This stuff is already starting to annoy me with games like NBA2K13, which constantly goes online - in single player - between every menu, every load screen, every quarter, for seemingly no reason half the time. My save games wouldn't even work if 2K's servers were down, which really pissed me off.

My consoles aren't online. I'd really prefer to keep it that way. Patchy Internet is still a real issue for a lot of people.

The one thing I like the most about both the PS4 and new xbox is that they seemed to have focused on making the user interface much faster & smoother. It's really great that it seems like both can switch between games or whatever as quickly as you can do it on an iPad.

i think theres a legitimate argument to be made that this reveal was basically pointed at mainstream non-gamer media, lots of wazoo look at this crazy kinect jazz, one box make your tv go streaming netflix cable etc. none of which is going to impress gamer peeps, but i think they are banking on doing that at e3. the huge misstep is doing absolutely ZERO damage control on the massive problematic bits gamewise at this stage in the game, esp the number one system killer here, which is making gamefly/game loans impossible.

the other possibility that no one is talking about atm is that the next unveil will be MS rolling out an in house on demand rental program - which will still clearly suck, but given the everything installed on the HD design/always connected aspect would be pretty easy to implement. basically MS could freeze out gamefly and lolblockbuster, get a cut for themselves, and fluff devs with the idea that they are vanguarding against used games.

my non-gamer tech analyst friend (lol Forrester) was retweeting glowing launch reviews of this thing this morning and I was like "it's semi problematic when your gaming console appears to be terrible at playing games" and he basically was having none of it, mostly because he doesn't actually care about games

I don't have an iPhone, just an iPad and there's no subscription involved, can play all the games, including multiplayer without paying an extra sixty dollars a year. can also use netflix, hulu, etc... without paying an additional subscription fee to unlock the ability to use those apps (unlike with xbox where you need "gold"). Can also use the iPad without ever connecting to the internet, so, yeah, I think you're missing it this time.

Based on the description of the technology developed for the patent it seems likely Microsoft will use the Kinect sensor, which is mandatory with Xbox One, to monitor the number of people present while watching a TV show, movie or music on the device. makes me wonder if this will end up being legal. is there any other manufactured product, where the manufacturer can stop you from reselling the product you've bought however you want? I know they don't with books, comics, CDs, DVDs, cars etc... it's definitely not a system I'd be into. I'm also very worried about the long-term playablity of games that require an outside daily authentication to be playable. What happens when those servers get turned off? There are already pretty good price drops on retail titles with time. maybe not steam-like, but this has nothing to do with that (also big titles on steam now take a long time to hit rock bottom prices, if they ever do). JCL - I wonder about that too; unfortunately the legality of reselling used boxed software and licenses is still in question. forcing others to buy a new online/DRM'd license is already par for the course for say, Microsoft or Adobe customers

I definitely disagree about AAA titles not hitting rock-bottom prices on PC though - I've seen the bigger titles drop 50-80% within 3 months in the past year (Borderlands 2, Tomb Raider, etc.), much more quickly than their corresponding console titles, and more often as well. the trick is that Steam itself doesn't run these sales as steep as other retailers (who often resell the same Steam keys!) do, they're the ones who are hungry for the sale now

the idea is that without resale, the value of the game purchase itself is diminished (as well as its ability to hold its original value over time) hence the prices will come down in general eventually. i'm not sure I buy it, though this is a plausible interpretation of the current PC download market, which is really competitive these days between Amazon, Steam, Gamersgate, Green Man Gaming, Origin, all those indie bundles, etc. driving prices downward

I guess for me the pricing of games isn't something I really see as a key problem (for me). It's the quality of games and the lack of originality that keeps me from buying more... just look at the big games at the xbox reveal, forza five and call of duty whatever (new fifa, madden, and nba)... if those games were released at five or ten dollars I still wouldn't buy them...

Steam has to drop prices on shit because they have so much competition -- despite the fact that they're the best service in all of the land they still have to compete against other distro platforms, box sales, humble bundles, still-easy piracy blah blah blah etc.

On Xbox One, microsoft will have no competition -- if you want to play games on a closed platform, you have to pay the platform owner. So the whole driving-the-price-down argument is kinda out the window.

Course I could be wrong. And I'll happily buy an Xbox One in 2017 when all of the games I wanted to play are $5 if that's the case. I recently upgraded my PC -- something tells me that will be getting 99% of my gaming time for the next few years.

Still, it seems to us that such a system would be both quickly sniffed out by tech-savvy users monitoring their Internet traffic (for, say, streaming video/audio data sent out by their Kinect without their consent), and it would be so disastrous for Microsoft's public image that they'd never even take the risk.

That said, there are some legitimate concerns to having an ever-present, always-on camera in your living room watching and listening to you while you use the Xbox One. The most immediate involves how the Xbox shares its data with marketers and content owners. Microsoft can talk about anonymization and privacy protections all they want, but the ability for third parties to access data on exactly what you are doing in front of your Xbox One has some creepy implications.

Take, for example, this Microsoft patent for a system that would allow a movie studio to charge a different price based on how many people it detects are actively watching a downloaded movie. It sounds like a ridiculous "feature" for Microsoft to implement (and one that would quickly send users scrambling to download movies on other, camera-free hardware), but it could also be used as a bargaining chip to, for instance, get a studio to release a downloadable movie to Xbox One screens earlier than others.

The other major privacy concern here is hacking. If someone manages to figure out how to get through Microsoft's security, they could theoretically have a live, 3D video feed of every Xbox One owner at all times. Then again, we already live with and manage this kind of concern for our laptops, our tablets, and our smartphones. Why should our game consoles be any different, right?
