Pokemon - which are your fav'rits?
Pokemon games - which is best?
Pokemon - what's coming up?
Is the GC 'proper' Pokemon game going to be any good?
What about the DS one?
Did you catch 'em all?
Why the fuck would anyone want to play Pokemon anyway?
Pokemon slash

AND MORE!

Tom (Groke), Sunday, 25 September 2005 22:56 (twenty years ago)

I had Pokemon Blue on the Gameboy, and yes, with the help of a friend with the Red version, I did catch 'em all.

Was babysitting a kid recently who also had a DS, and when Mario multiplayer got dull, we swapped Gameboy Advance games for a little bit. I let him play Sonic Advance 3, and in return got to play a new-fangled GBA Pokemon game. It seemed pretty much the same as the old ones, but with fancy graphics. Quite fun, but possibly a bit too easy (as should be expected, really).

melton mowbray (adr), Sunday, 25 September 2005 23:12 (twenty years ago)

I think they strike a good balance between being quite easy to complete but with a load of extra stuff to do to fill yr Pokedex; I have never remotely got near catching them all, even discounting the ones I'd need a link-up to do. I find them very relaxing to play somehow though, even if a lot of it is just wandering round levelling up. The optimistic world of Pokemon is a charming one I think.

Tom (Groke), Sunday, 25 September 2005 23:17 (twenty years ago)

Oh yes, they're definitely relaxing. I remember spending hours lying on the floor playing Pokemon Blue. Is there a proper one coming out for the DS, that isn't pinball, racing or Pokemon Backgammon? If so, I might well get it, if only because of the pick-up-and-play-ness of the DS when you close it. It'd be great to have something to play when waiting for things to happen, that doesn't involve fishing out headphones and turning down other noise, like Electroplankton.

melton mowbray (adr), Sunday, 25 September 2005 23:34 (twenty years ago)

I played Red for about three months and then lost interest. It's not a bad little RPG and it gave me excellent conversation material for eight year olds.

Oh and my fave pokemon was Bellsprout. Lamest of the lame.

The Yellow Kid, Monday, 26 September 2005 06:06 (twenty years ago)

i played one of them (i forget which) on a GB emulator some 5 years ago on my old pc. it was pretty fun, repetitively relaxing for sure. reminded me of phantasy star 2 which used to be like my favourite game ever!

s1ocki (slutsky), Monday, 26 September 2005 13:42 (twenty years ago)

(then i played THAT on an emulator and blew my dome)

s1ocki (slutsky), Monday, 26 September 2005 13:42 (twenty years ago)

I played it on an emulator, loved it, and bought a gameboy to play it. I think it kinda suffers from how there is no real way to make the battles hard so all the difficulty is being-lost-type frustration rather than skill challenge. But, I mean, numbers go up. I love numbers going up. When I buy a DS I'll probably buy it again.

My favourites are Evie and Graveller, who I chose this name partly because.

Is the GC 'proper' Pokemon game going to be any good?
I know nothing about this! Tell more!

Gravel Puzzleworth (Gregory Henry), Monday, 26 September 2005 18:00 (twenty years ago)

Pokemon Snap was awesome.

when I went to gencon they were having pokemon card tournaments, it was really cool to see like 12-year-old girls and middle-aged men face off.

Okay, teeny's last sentence has hurt my brain.

Cubone was the best Pokémon on just aobut every level. One, the name was endless entertainment. Two, he brought the badass AND the cute, a deadly combination. Three, I don't think he actually had a face under that mask, which is really fucked up and surreal for a kid's game. Four, he wore the skull and fought with the tibia of his enemies or something. He was Conan the Barbarian, if Conan was more Japanese, less Arnold, and way more badass. Plus he was never a badguy on the TV show and he was Ground type which made him really useful.

one year passes...
The new one comes out soon, and I may get it... apparently there's some insanity with trading-- gotta plug the old game into port 2 and the new one into port 1, and all this... anyone know any more?

Also... I have no idea why I still care. I haven't really enjoyed one since... Red. But a decent game to play on the 2-3h of bussing a day is always good-- and while those stylus games are fun, TRY FUCKNIG CUTTING OPEN A PATIENT IN TRAUMA CENTRE ON THE BUMPIEST SUBWAY EVER. FUCK.

Will M., Tuesday, 27 February 2007 17:28 (nineteen years ago)

as far as i know you can trade from sapphire/ruby/emerald to diamond/pearl by plugging them both in. then you transfer a couple of pokemon across (like 5-10 at a time i think?) and they appear in a pokemon safari-type thing in diamond/pearl that you have to then catch to use. sounds like a bit of a pain but it could be fun. i am looking forward to it because it is the first pokemon that would actually allow me to trade between versions. also, wifi will be fun if i can find someone who isn't a 12 year old pokemon savant who will kick my arse in 30 seconds

kv_nol, Wednesday, 28 February 2007 08:41 (nineteen years ago)

I played about an hour each of Pokemon Ranger and Pokemon Mystery Dungeon on the DS. May go back to Ranger, it had an interesting stylus capture thing (you have to draw circles around the pokemon to catch them), but wasn't hugely wowed by either of them really. And having all these RPG-style-games-with-the-pokemon-name-which-aren't-actually-pokemon-games around (see also the GC version) just tends to dilute the brand and leave me less eager to play the proper ones, really.

Trozei was quite good fun though. Until (as I've complained elsewhere) I beat it and unlocked hard mode and it made me sit though all the cutscenes AND TUTORIAL LEVELS again. Idiots!

JimD, Thursday, 1 March 2007 11:46 (nineteen years ago)

what was crap about mysterious dungeon?

TOMBOT, Thursday, 1 March 2007 14:46 (nineteen years ago)

Tom said it seemed like 1x repetitive dungeon crawl button bash but Isabel apparently liked it - like Jim I am wary of all the pokemon-name-but-not-rly-pokemon games, even though I spent FAR too long playing Pokemon Colosseum on the GC whilst acknowledging that it was k-rub EVEN AS I BLEARILY RUBBED MY EYES after four hours worth of play..

But anyway, I would try Mystery Dungeon if I saw it anywhere for LESS THAN £25 :(

Sarah, Thursday, 1 March 2007 16:18 (nineteen years ago)

Yeah, Mystery Dungeon wasn't all that bad, but its YOU ARE NOW A POKEMON WOWZ! thing seemed like a bad idea, since it meant that a) you don't get to collect other pokemon any more, and b) the game didn't even let you choose which pokemon you wanted to be...it forced me to be a treecko, which I wasn't too happy about.

All the above may have changed if I'd stayed with it a bit longer though. And I might give it a second chance, once I'm finished with FF3, which shouldn't be too far away now (although I've got harvest moon and hotel dusk and age of empires and various other long games waiting for me to get stuck into them as well....owning a DS-Xtreme is ACE!).

JimD, Friday, 2 March 2007 14:24 (nineteen years ago)

I am jumping up & down w/excitement and impatience for the day Diamond & Pearl are released.

I loved that island in Ruby where everyone idolized Wailmer. "It's called W-w-w-Wailmer watching!"

Abbott, Thursday, 15 March 2007 20:34 (eighteen years ago)

pokemon snap was the only one i ever really liked.

M@tt He1ges0n, Thursday, 15 March 2007 20:46 (eighteen years ago)

Pokemon Snap is INCREDIBLE! I hearts it.

Pokemon Mystery Dungeon is still rub, but I played it again last night, I have rescued a Rattata and a Voltorb.

Sarah, Tuesday, 27 March 2007 10:38 (eighteen years ago)

I keep fucking up what I think is the last level in adventure mode on Pokemon Link - I'm so shit at it when it goes into dark silhouette mode.

onimo, Tuesday, 27 March 2007 11:06 (eighteen years ago)

I wish you could still print out Pokemon Snap pics at Blockbuster video.

Abbott, Tuesday, 27 March 2007 20:07 (eighteen years ago)

three weeks pass...
I've just started playing pearl! Woo! I'm not far enough in for it to give me a friend code yet, but I'm expecting fun scraps with all you lot, just as soon as it does. :)

JimD, Saturday, 21 April 2007 12:16 (eighteen years ago)

(ok, now I've got a code. It's 5326 7362 9055. Play with me!)

JimD, Saturday, 21 April 2007 14:08 (eighteen years ago)

How do you get given a friend code? I went to the bottom of the poke-centre and I found where you can enter other people's friend codes, but I can't for the life of me see where you can find out what your's is. Any help?

webber, Monday, 23 April 2007 03:27 (eighteen years ago)

4081 1977 8490

webber, Monday, 23 April 2007 07:53 (eighteen years ago)

Where di you find that friend code, webber? I haven't really looked yet, but I did get that pal pad or whatever.

Will M., Monday, 23 April 2007 18:30 (eighteen years ago)

Yep, if you look in your pal pad you can check your own code. I've added you, webber!

JimD, Monday, 23 April 2007 19:05 (eighteen years ago)

2964 5069 9622 mmmm hmm!

Will M., Tuesday, 24 April 2007 02:00 (eighteen years ago)

Wah! Where did you get your copies??

Sarah, Tuesday, 24 April 2007 11:11 (eighteen years ago)

They had plenty of copies at the Best Buy, EB Games, AND Futureshop where my family lives (I was home for the weekend)

Will M., Tuesday, 24 April 2007 14:19 (eighteen years ago)

What Pokemon yalls got? I have a level 20 Psyduck, Grotle, and Luxio now. I have some oter Pokemon but they haven't interested me long enough for me to actually do anything w/ them.

Will M., Tuesday, 24 April 2007 18:00 (eighteen years ago)

I've got a Chatot I'm quite fond of (who has some surprisingly powerful attacks for a little birdie) but the rest of my team, so far, are just old standards (a misdreavus, a psyduck, a geodude, etc). On the whole the new monsters don't seem particularly interesting.

I'm quite enjoying hanging around underground though, digging up spheres.

Btw, have registered you Will. Perhaps we should start thinking about scheduling some fights or something...

JimD, Wednesday, 25 April 2007 15:26 (eighteen years ago)

Yeah, Chatot seems pretty good! I, too, have levelled him to the level of the rest of my little guys. I also friend code added you. Which side of the Atlantic are you on? If the east side, it may be difficult to set up a fight or two, because I generally get home from work around 7-8pm EST. Either way though.

I find the pickings for Pokemon seem very slim, too. I guess I'm not far yet. Shoulda picked Chimchar though, there are NO Fire pokemon to be found. :( Found and nabbed a Cleffa though, I wonder if they're worth using.

Will M., Wednesday, 25 April 2007 16:21 (eighteen years ago)

Okay, let me phrase this another way. Where did people in the UK get their copies from, as certain retailers state they will NOT SHIP pokemon to the EU!

Sarah, Thursday, 26 April 2007 11:24 (eighteen years ago)

Amazon is giving release date of 30 June and your pokemon will all be like level 9372 by then :(

Sarah, Thursday, 26 April 2007 11:25 (eighteen years ago)

By then I will be successfully breeding my pokemans, so the new little babies will all be level 1, and itll be like i am at the same level as you because i will have to level them all up all over again!

Will M., Thursday, 26 April 2007 15:22 (eighteen years ago)

Where did people in the UK get their copies from

(cough)downloadedromplusflashcard(cough)

Sorry!

And yes, I'm in London, so hooking up might be tricky, esp since I tend to go te bed very early these days. But I'll let you know if I have any late nights coming up. :)

JimD, Thursday, 26 April 2007 17:05 (eighteen years ago)

Course Sarah, you could always try www.dvdboxoffice.com in canada. They're happy to ship worldwide (or at least they always used to be, back when I used to get all my ds and gc games from them) AND they've got pokemon in stock AND it's LOTS cheaper than it'll be when it finally arrives here in another two months time anyway. So that's what you should do.

JimD, Thursday, 26 April 2007 17:10 (eighteen years ago)

Actually, you know what's annoying me at the moment? I'm 75% certain that I bought and played pokemon ruby, but I can't find my cart anywhere. And I don't know whether that's because it's lost, or because I sold it, or because I'm just confused and I never actually played it in the first place. But either way, it's looking like no pokedex-transferring-fun for me, boo.

JimD, Thursday, 26 April 2007 17:12 (eighteen years ago)

STOP PRESS - Just found it! Had a flash of inspiration, and thought of checking in the slot of my old (long since packed away) GBA. And there it was! Hooray!

Found my copy of pokemon gold too. Shame I won't be able to transfer all those over too.

JimD, Thursday, 26 April 2007 17:24 (eighteen years ago)

I have an old flash cart type thing where my slots 1 and 2 are used for my p1rat1ng, so i can't put my ruby in anyway :/

Will M., Thursday, 26 April 2007 17:39 (eighteen years ago)

I need to pick a good fighting pokemon. hot tips and/or trades anyone? :O

Will M., Thursday, 26 April 2007 17:40 (eighteen years ago)

http://press.nintendo.com/articles.jsp?id=12047

a million copies of the two games sold worldwide in 5 days

kingfish, Friday, 27 April 2007 05:16 (eighteen years ago)

How do you transfer pokemon from Ruby/Sapphire? Unfortunately I downloaded my copy too and wont be able to transfer mine until the cart is released here in July :(

Does anyone have any recommendations for a good electric-type to be on the look-out for?

webber, Friday, 27 April 2007 13:10 (eighteen years ago)

To use the ruby/sapphire/firered/leafgreen carts, you have to get the national dex, which isn't until much later in the game.

in the meantime, shinx is a pretty good electric type. i've been using him + a thunder TM for pretty badass killifying.

Will M., Friday, 27 April 2007 14:05 (eighteen years ago)

A friend is doing some purchasing for me so SOON I will have the new pokeys (Pokeys!!) - I have also ordered a Magical Thing for the DS which will either make me life great or terrible OR BOTH (Jim I think it is the same thing that you have - Hungry horace on the DS omg!)

Sarah, Monday, 30 April 2007 12:43 (eighteen years ago)

Ooh, sarah, ace. Will you be at next poptimism? Could bring treats for you, if you want.

Also - hello EST! I'm awake. Anyone fancy trying to get some trades/battles working?

JimD, Wednesday, 2 May 2007 23:44 (eighteen years ago)

Yeh definitely! If you like the works of the Spectrum I can help you out (but that's about it seeing as I only figured it out yesterday with the extensive help of a gentleman over gmail chat, involving me having to TAKE A PHOTO of what I had so he could compare it to what he had, etc etc).

Sarah, Thursday, 3 May 2007 14:02 (eighteen years ago)

Has yours arrived yet sarah? I'm dreaming of POPTIMISM WIFI TRADING and things.

JimD, Wednesday, 9 May 2007 15:32 (eighteen years ago)

Argh, no I'm afraid not! I have pokemon ranger though, can we link those up? I've also got all the old pokey games so if we have different versions can we trade through the DS??

Sarah, Thursday, 10 May 2007 09:10 (eighteen years ago)

Well, um, they do all link up, I think, somehow. But as I understand it, you've got to finish ranger before you can link it to pearl/diamond. And you've got to finish pearl/diamond before you can link them to any of the GBA games. And poptimism's cancelled anyway!

Maybe we'd better just wait. :)

JimD, Thursday, 10 May 2007 12:38 (eighteen years ago)

Haha!! Well I will generally have my DS with me anyway so if you come to the Pakenham we can see what we can do! Can you download play 42 all time classics? Goodness knows how far I am from Pokemon Ranger, I'm on about 9hrs gameplay at the moment, but I don't know if it's like normal Pokémon levels (80hrs play and counting hurra I am insane).

Sarah, Thursday, 10 May 2007 16:01 (eighteen years ago)

POKEMON DIAMOND I LOVE YOU.

I wish I could play Pokemon in Packenham.

Abbott, Saturday, 12 May 2007 19:01 (eighteen years ago)

two weeks pass...

So! I've got Pokémon Pearl! Here are my pokéys, they're all around level 30:

* Monferno (evolved from Chimchar) (and winner of a Normal rank Cool contest!) - FIRE
* Luxray (just evolved from Luxio yesterday, originally a Shinx caught pretty much straightaway) - ELECTRIC
* Bronzor (a new addition to the team levelled up fairly rapidly) - STEEL/PSYCHIC
* Kadabra (from an Abra I caught fairly soon) plea: can someone please trade this Kadabra with me and then return him so he can evolve into an Alakazam?? He can't evolve any other way and I have *never* got an Alakazam in my entire pokémon "career"! haha I am such a sad case... - PSYCHIC
* Staravia (evolved from Starly) - FLYING
* Psyduck (named OWL, only pokey I've actually named!) - WATER

It doesn't feel right not having a grass pokémon but I simply haven't come across any great ones - I might try out a Roselia if I find one. But Budew is a bit meh and blah. Otherwise I think I'm fairly balanced enough. Bronzor is sort of a new tactic for me, he knows Confuse Ray and Hypnosis so he can Confuse and put other pokeys to sleep which is a) good for catching wild pokemon and b) will give me time to heal other pokeys whilst opponents sleep.

Sarah, Friday, 1 June 2007 09:05 (eighteen years ago)

One problem I have is that none of these know Rock Smash - it's a crap attack in battle and I resent having to delete a good move in order for one of my key players to get through a dungeon - I had originally taught it to a Bidof - but when I realised my Bidof was like, 10 levels below the rest of my pokemon I realised I just wasn't going to keep the dude and put him back on the bench.

Sarah, Friday, 1 June 2007 09:19 (eighteen years ago)

I just had to teach Staravia Defog and delete Double Team which wz irritating...

Sarah, Friday, 1 June 2007 09:19 (eighteen years ago)

I LOVE POKEMON

Sarah, Friday, 1 June 2007 09:19 (eighteen years ago)

I am trying to find out if there are any pokemans that I can teach four moves to, so I can only carry two stupid utility pokemon instead of, like, 3 or 4.

Will M., Friday, 1 June 2007 14:10 (eighteen years ago)

just ordered pokemon pearl. So excited.

On a side note, it's great i can actually use ilx with vista now.

Dy, Monday, 4 June 2007 00:52 (eighteen years ago)

Jim, I've added you to my 'pal' list! Are you reading?? Incidentally next Poptimism 29th June, BE THERE :) :) :)

I'll post up my ID number when I'm home, I deliberately left Pokémon at home today as I am really overdoing it on the darned game :)

Sarah, Monday, 4 June 2007 16:27 (eighteen years ago)

will m, bidoof or whatever it's called can learn all four moves you need for victory road. it can't learn cut though, unfortunately.

webber, Thursday, 7 June 2007 01:28 (eighteen years ago)

I have added a SNOVER to my team, for his ph34rs0m3 ICE POWERS. Bronzhong has been 'cut' for the moment, as I already had a psychic in Kadabra, and his steel attributes weren't as impressive as I thought they could be (ie resistant to pretty much everything). Am currently climbing Mt. Coronet.

Srsly need to evolve Kadabra into an Alakazam. His HP and defence is p1ss p00r. Do any of you want to wi-fi trade? it will involve recieving my kadabra THEN SENDING HIM BACK TO ME at which point he turns into an Alakazam (I think)! Realised I had a Kadabra in my Elite Four team last time round as well, feel a bit grumpy I am using the same one again so that is ANOTHER reason he needs to evolve :)

Luxray and OWL (a Golduck) are the biggest stars of my line up so far - Infernape is good, but he only has one fire attack (???) and he's a FIRE POKEMON so that is a bit laayme. My Staraptor is quite a few levels below the rest of my team, but that was a conscious decision because her HP is already higher than everyone elses. Need to get some levelling up on her soon though.

Sarah, Thursday, 7 June 2007 13:38 (eighteen years ago)

Hello Sarah! Sorry, I've been away. I'm back now. And yes, let's trade! Most of my main team are around lv. 45-60 now, and I've opened up the ability to drag monsters from Pokemon Ruby, so that's taking up a lot of my time (It's SO nice to have Jirachi back in my team! I'm pretty much all done with the main game though, I've beat the elite four and travelled every route and got four of the legendaries. This is the point where I normally lose interest, so we'll have to see whether the online gubbins will keep me playing.

Anyhow, my current team:

Punch, a Lv. 55 SWAMPERT, my pokemon ruby water starter. He's replaced my old psyduck.

Bobo, a Lv 46 TORTERRA, my pokemon pearl starter. Like Sarah's monkey, this is a grass type with no grass moves, which isn't ideal. He may get dropped soon.

Charap, a Lv. 55 CHATOT. Not as strong as he was in the middle stages of the game, relatively, but still handy to have around.

Zilla, a Lv. 61 PALKIA. He's ace, and can get me out of any scrape. Almost makes the game too easy, but he's had a couple of beatings from other dragon types.

Jirachi, a Lv. 37 JIRACHI. Traded from the gamecube bonus disc via a GBA link cable, to my copy of ruby, then from there to Pearl. Not fighting much at the moment, but holding an exp. share and powering up rapidly.

Wordsworth, a Lv. 49 GROUDON, one of the legendaries from ruby. He's a bg meaty fire type with a really nice set of moves (fire blast, thunderbolt, earthquake, and a weak slash for gently slapping wild ones around)

JimD, Friday, 8 June 2007 09:19 (eighteen years ago)

Ooh ooh so exciting!!! Jim (and everyone else obv!) here is my friend code:

2320 2955 2670

:)

I've just caught Palkia, yay! Now I'm going to go after the Pearl legendaries. Need more MASTER BALLS (if you know what I mean). Used up about 15 Ultra balls on Uxie to no effect and then all my lovely pokeys fainted. Not good.

Sarah, Friday, 8 June 2007 13:30 (eighteen years ago)

I'm at THE ELITE FOUR.

Sarah, Friday, 15 June 2007 10:58 (eighteen years ago)

Came through yesterday, absolutely adoring it. I've never played Pokémon before so i have no idea how to be all l33t and stuff but i have a very nice looking penguin that has metal claws.

my ID is 5268 1006 4976 6000

Also, why would i ever want to stop my pokemon evolving? This is something i cannot understand.

Dy, Friday, 15 June 2007 19:13 (eighteen years ago)

i picked this up, yesterday. haven't played it yet, though. i'll post my friend code, soon.

funny farm, Tuesday, 19 June 2007 18:49 (eighteen years ago)

You might want to stop a pokemon evolving if you want it to learn different moves. If you bring a pichu all the way up to lv. 100 without letting it evolve, it'll have picked up a different bunch of moves to those a Picachu would've learnt, which in turn would be different to those a Raichu learns.

I'm currently playing and replaying through the early stages of pokemon ruby, so that I can pick up all three of the starter pokemon, then transfer them all to pearl and evolve them there. It's a bit mental, really.

JimD, Wednesday, 20 June 2007 10:09 (eighteen years ago)

Fucking fucking bastard the Elite Four, fucking fucking evil bastards!! Especially Quagsire, Bronzhong, Alakazam, Girafarig and don't even talk to me about Cynthia's pokemon as I only ever got to her once! ARGH!

This is my own fucking fault for picking the fire pokemon at the start - but I never have before and how the HECK was I supposed to know he would be Fire/FIGHTING?? He is the only pokemon I have which is strong against Bronzhong but the Fighting part means he's weak to psychic so it's an automatic one hit KO! And he only has ONE decent fire attack - Fire Blast - which I had to teach via a TM AND it only has 5 pp!! ARGH! It's also got low accuracy so if that misses ANYTHING, you're fcked. Worst fucking fire pokemon EVER basically.

Sarah, Tuesday, 26 June 2007 12:56 (eighteen years ago)

Haha omg I am really actually SO CROSS with this! I lost AGAIN on the journey this morning and SULKED for the entire tube part of my journey! I think people thought I was glowering at them and the packed train but really I was thinking FUCK YOU BRONZHONG FUCK YOU YOU BASTARD I HATE YOU ALL.

Sarah, Tuesday, 26 June 2007 12:57 (eighteen years ago)

You know you can save after every battle, even with the eliste four? So you only need to get lucky with each one of them once, really. That's how I got past them anyway (although actually I only had to reload once, I guess I'd maybe just levelled up a bit more by the time I got there). Did you get Palkia?

Yeah but my pokemon are still only around Level 50-2ish, apart from Palkia who is L56 - and I have been trying desperately to bulk up an Abomasnow as I had no grass type, ARGHH. I really DO hate Bronzhong. Also Garchomp, and Infernape is such a poor fire type, he always gets knocked out before he can even get a hit in. But I don't HAVE any other fire types (even with all the other games I generally don't have a fire type by the end).

Are you coming to Poptimism on Friday Jim? :)

I can't find my way up Mt. Coronet worth shit....I'm pretty far (ie to the hill w/a little split [art that has the choice either between the obscured cave or another Rock Climb trail). All the walkthrus say I should just go into cave and be all no problem. But the CAVE just has come crappy waterfalls and no way to get to the next door. I am so pissed. It has put me off playing the game for over a month now.

I did this with Ruby, too....I couldn't find Team Magma's super secret undersea cave. Well, I did, but I did something one tiny bit wrong and then got lost...I don't know what happened. I finally asked my boyfriend to see if he could do something about it, and he figured it out ASAP.

I'm gonna kill.

Right, at the risk of bumping an old thread and then being the only nerd posting on it,

I hate Hearthome City. Fucking Pokemon contests (I entered with a Bronzor called Bruce and won 'smart normal rank' but oh boy was it ever lame) and fucking Fantina with her stupid undefeatable ghosts and I can't use HMs strength or surf outside of battle until I beat her so I can't explore beyond what I've already explored :( :( :(

I am getting bored of trying to level up my Pokemon squad by wandering around in Meditite-infested patches of grass.

salsa shark, Wednesday, 21 January 2009 13:19 (seventeen years ago)

Hmm, I remember stopping playing Diamond, but can't remember why or where I was in the game at that point. I keep meaning to go back to it, but I think I was in one of those vague points where you don't really have any clear goal, so I'd probably be lost as hell when I went back to it. I remember doing the same with Sapphire; I went back after not playing it for a month, and there I was, in the middle of the ocean sittin on a pokemon with no idea what was going on. I never went back to it again.

Black/White, anyone? I'm guessing not.

I nerded out on Pokemon today and preordered the new game and downloaded a freebie shiny/exclusive dude using that 'Mystery Gift' thingee. I missed last week's, but for anyone who cares, this week and next week you can download free 'legendary' Pokemon via Mystery Gift (might only be available for Eurozone, not sure though).

What's new in black/white? Feels like a while since I've played one, could be tempted if it's not just going to be EXACTLY THE SAME OLD GAME AGAIN LIKE IT ALWAYS IS.

(note, I don't hate that, just not sure I'm in the mood for it atm).

JimD, Wednesday, 16 February 2011 15:39 (fifteen years ago)

well it's going to have a complete assortment of new pokemans to catch in the first part of the game (pre-elite-4). otherwise it'll probably be exactly the same! there will be, uh, 3-on-3 battles, I guess?

I dunno I want to buy it.

instead of a brain in the subway mila kunis going down on you (silby), Wednesday, 16 February 2011 22:49 (fifteen years ago)

Jim - all new Pokémon! No rattatas! No zubats! It's going to be massively epic. And there's a goth pokemon! And once made from ice-cream!

This weekend (and next weekend in London at least) there are Celebi giveaway events for those who have no qualms about their addiction.

I'm currently playing FireRed. My aim is to catch all original 151 (after I got a Mew last year).

Not being able to connect my DS to my wifi connection really sux when trying to catch 'em all :( (my wireless is kind of iffy anyway, and I can't lower the security settings without it breaking entirely, and ugh so tedious why won't it WORRRRK. The 3ds had better have it working. But do I WANT it working, and updating my system with cr4p all the time? Ramble ramble).

Just beat the fourth gym in Pokemon Black. Who else is playing this on ILX? Let's get some chatter going. My current team is all basically in their 20s, and my current lineup is Pignite, Blitzle, Yamask, Drilbur, Pansage and Palpitoad. Drilbur + Yamask were the most recent additions and I'm not totally sold on them yet.

Mordy, Saturday, 26 March 2011 23:30 (fourteen years ago)

Ho ho ho my lot are in their 40s, because I ground an awful lot with those Audinos (and have pretty much played the game constantly and need to tell myself to put it down).

I've got: Serperior (regal grass snake! he is so great but am miffed he can't go in musicals anymore), Seismitoad (poor thing is so hulking and ugly, I am fond of him but he does himself no favours by constantly shaking those warts, oh man), Zebstrika, Simisear, GURDURR and Stoutland.

Yamask is great against pokémon who only have physical attacks as nooothing can hit it - I used a Yamask in a battle with my friend last week and she was getting infuriated with it. Its evolved form is also pretty funny - a jazz hands coffin!

superpitching, Tuesday, 29 March 2011 13:12 (fourteen years ago)

one thing I'm really enjoying about this pokemon is that it doesn't feel like I have to grind so much. maybe it's bc there are more trainer battles between gyms so I don't have to supplement xp with random encounters, or maybe it's bc the gyms are just better spaced/designed.

Mordy, Tuesday, 29 March 2011 13:26 (fourteen years ago)

I agree with you!

I ground because I had a picking in my brain to do so, curses! :)

Ooh I am so mad at myself – I got to the Elite 4 and I have nothing – nothing! – good against dark, psychic, or ghost pokemon. What folly on my part, to go that long with leveling some up, assuming since they're not immediately needed, they'll never be needed? Will I ever even finish this game?

I scraped through against the Elite 4, mainly by having a billion revives and potions. Then I go through to the next area, and every trainer is 20 levels stronger than the Elite 4. That's what you need to watch out for.

one month passes...

I finished the main game/Elite Four in Black last night.

Things I liked about this game:
- multiple-use TMs <3 <3
- completely new set of Pokemon
- STUNFISK!!! <3 make fun all you like, but I find this guy to be extremely versatile and reliable
- map that lists what's in each town
- season changes
- Nimbasa city
- the move away from having tons of throwaway water-based Pokemon

And yeah I also noticed the lack of grinding too... and actually [small spoiler coming up if you haven't finished the main game] I don't think anyone in any of the final battles has a Pokemon higher than Lv53, which is pretty low for final battle standards... pretty sure previous gens have gone into the high 50s/low 60s. I had a stunfisk, emboar, eelektross, jellicent, krookorok, and sawk (all Lv50) in my final battle squad, so the psy/dark/fighting/ghost trainers all went down pretty easily. Actually the only part of this game that's been challenging to me so far was the final main story battle.

I think I liked Pearl better, felt like there was more stuff to do, but I haven't done any post-story stuff so hopefully there are more caves and things to explore now.

salsa shark, Tuesday, 21 June 2011 16:14 (fourteen years ago)

It's so long into the game before you get the rod iirc! (And especially very long before you get Surf!) Stunfisk needs the rod, yes? I like its baffling looks! Does it have electric powers? It's always confusing to me when a pokemon has two types and one is super effective against the other. A house divided!

lol emboar!

Dr. Frog, B.S., M.S.E., Ph.D (Lamp), Tuesday, 21 June 2011 16:22 (fourteen years ago)

you don't need anything special to get a stunfisk... you'll stumble across them if you walk in the puddles along route 8 (I think route 8).
it's ground/electric type but its movepool is really varied, it uses moves from tons of different types. mine knows: revenge, payback (these ones are good because this pokemon is sllllooooowww and can take advantage of these moves), thunderbolt, and dig, but at various points it's also known sludge bomb and muddy water. it's not really the greatest attacker but mine's seen me through a surprisingly high number of battles. I have it hold the rocky helmet to help wear down foes.

I've been playing for about a week now. The new graphics are nice but I don't think it's a huuuuuuge step up from Black/White.

Random things I like about this game: Hawlucha, Restaurant Le Yeah's triple battles (it made it so easy to get my team levelled up between the 30s/40s without grinding), the storyline giving you a few really decent Pokemon in the first half of the game, new moves, new 'fairy' type, being able to see distribution of EVs, Pikachu's voice acting

Dislikes: only Pikachu gets voice acting, poor camera angling and lack of any on-screen map when in lumiose city, 'horde battles', that some of the ppl who challenge you to battles are a bit freaky/zombie-like in their 2D drawings, too many challengers with fighting types, two dimensional Stunfisk.

salsa shark, Saturday, 9 November 2013 22:11 (twelve years ago)

you take that back, flat Stunfisk is hilarious

Andrew Kornfan, Saturday, 9 November 2013 23:11 (twelve years ago)

flat stunfisk is so puzzling! I know it's supposed to be flat-ish but surely not two dimensional! I honestly thought my game was glitching the first time I encountered one :/

salsa shark, Sunday, 10 November 2013 01:13 (twelve years ago)

it's got a little bit of thickness, I thought, but I haven't encountered one since a Battle Maison match a few days ago so I could be mistaken. I think it's supposed to be one of those fish that hides from predators in the sand. I love it

my girlfriend got me pokemon pearl and a DS for our anniversary, after hearing me complain about how much i missed playing pokemon. as someone who last played silver something like 10 years ago, i was happy with how similar the gameplay is relative to the old ones (though i guess pearl is pretty old at this point). not really a huge fan of the double battles, and i'm uninterested in all the berries/pokemon contests and stuff, but the plot is still pretty good. my only real complaint would be the lack of cool pokemon to raise, though i guess i just made some bad choices. i had always gone with the water starters, so i chose piplup, but he doesn't really learn any cool moves. the other 2 i've had for a while are machop and luxio.

Sword Shield was underwhelming in a lot of ways but its new pokemon and region specific types were great. I'm not far enough into Scarlet Violet to judge it yet but the changes/updates so far are promising.
