The Playstation Vita is a game system

JimD, Thursday, 23 February 2012 09:18 (thirteen years ago)

is anyone buying this thing then? sales have been pretty disastrous in japan so far, be interesting to see if it does better in the west

zappi, Thursday, 23 February 2012 10:25 (thirteen years ago)

it requires it's own sony specific vita memory card?

will not buy

Summer Slam! (Ste), Thursday, 23 February 2012 11:38 (thirteen years ago)

The memory card thing is a scam of grand dimensions. Just shameless.

But I bought the vita and I like it a lot. I just prefer dedicated handheld gaming and want the best possible hardware. Haven't played a lot yet but Wipeout is much more impressive than Uncharted (the demo) in terms of making use of the horsepower in my opinion. Rayman looks like the PS3 version. Motorstorm is a fun little thing. No complaints about the physical aspect, the controls. But I'm easy to please with most dual stick setups, even the 3DS frankenstick.

Most importantly I get to play psp Monster Hunter Freedom Unite to tide me over until a new handheld MH is released in the west some day.

The UI is kinda ugly but in a charming way. Most impressive feat is instant switching between game and UI main screen.

abcfsk, Thursday, 23 February 2012 13:36 (thirteen years ago)

^^^ all of this OTM, particularly re: how amazing Wipeout looks/feels

This is the first "dedicated" handheld gaming device I've owned. I basically bought it on a whim last night; after setting up Remote Play and streaming music from my Stora through my PS3 onto my Vita, I have not felt any guilt whatsoever.

(thinks and smiles) (DJP), Thursday, 23 February 2012 14:40 (thirteen years ago)

also planning on picking up Virtua Tennis 4 tonight, which was the demo that made me go "okay yes I am buying this"

(thinks and smiles) (DJP), Thursday, 23 February 2012 14:41 (thirteen years ago)

I kind of hate you guys right now for saying "you can play Wipeout on it"

my kingdom has been compromised so many times by people saying this, but I am actually horrible at wipeout, I just feel a compulsion to buy it

valleys of your mind (mh), Thursday, 23 February 2012 15:29 (thirteen years ago)

i've bought two sony consoles for the sole purpose of playing wipeout, i'm not gonna make it three.

ledge, Thursday, 23 February 2012 15:29 (thirteen years ago)

haha I am awful at Wipeout too

(thinks and smiles) (DJP), Thursday, 23 February 2012 15:31 (thirteen years ago)

my PSP was lost to the sands of time after a breakup when I misread "I still have your PSP, charger" as "I still have your PSP charger"

actually I think she just didn't have a comma in there

valleys of your mind (mh), Thursday, 23 February 2012 15:31 (thirteen years ago)

kinda wish i had never given away my game boy advance (before i got a DS, which i barely ever played). pinnacle of hand-held gaming imo.

still... traded my 3DS (no battery life lol) against a VITA

the jeremy lin of YANIV (cozen), Friday, 24 February 2012 21:23 (thirteen years ago)

I got one of these and it owns quite substantially. I'm waiting for my case (the badass one) to come in before I start bringing it everywhere, but it honestly holds its own surprisingly well as a home console too.

I'm thinking that most of my purchases will be digital with exceptions for games like Persona 4 or Gravity Rush or etc. I *really* can't wait for The Show so that I can build up my RTTS dude on the bus; these are exciting times to have a 2+ hour roundtrip public transportation commute.

and as much of a ripoff as the memory cards are, they're nothing compared to the ripoff bonanza of the cradle. $20 for a laughably flimsy piece of plastic and it doesn't even come with a USB cable? gtfo.

DWARF ATHLETIC ASSOCIATION OF AMERICA (jamescobo), Friday, 24 February 2012 21:31 (thirteen years ago)

I feel like the games are too big to go purely digital - even if I were to spend $100(!) for a 32 gig card, I think one would waste more time managing & redownloading content than switching in and out the little game cards. I don't know - I kind of like the tiny little blue cases too.

JCL, Saturday, 25 February 2012 05:32 (thirteen years ago)

Yeah I'm really loving this system to the point where I've thought "this is the ultimate handheld", this is where I've wanted handhelds to be. Sorta makes me wish Nintendo went 3rd party so I didn't need two pieces of hardware.

Loving the youtube comments though. "It's chronologically fucked up. What about the thrust trail coming from the back of the ships? That's more consistent with 2097 rather than the first Wipeout, where the craft used afterburners. Annoying..." Pretty sure I saw a Predator ship in the background too.

little clouds of citrus spritz as i peel (forksclovetofu), Monday, 27 February 2012 06:52 (thirteen years ago)

adam's sad gaming world circa 2012: i rarely have the time/attention span to sit and play a Major Console Game these days and i feel bad monopolizing the tv while my (non-gaming) gf just wants to watch 30 rock reruns. my 2008 vintage macbook is not really capable of playing any recent games and i am bored with emulators/dosbox/etc.

my favorite system of all time is the DS. most of my gaming time at this point is less-than-an-hour bursts with the occasional marathon. i like the idea of iOS games but find many of them lacking depth (i mostly just play ticket to ride pocket).

it seems that sony is moving toward selling smaller games at reasonable prices via download (motorstorm etc) and AAA titles via disc and that the vita is equally capable of either. is this an accurate impression?

should i buy this y/n

adam, Monday, 27 February 2012 15:11 (thirteen years ago)

(ie justify my irrational desire for the vita)

you basically just described the apotheosis VITA user

the jeremy lin of YANIV (cozen), Monday, 27 February 2012 18:04 (thirteen years ago)

cozen otm; the Vita feels like it was designed with the singular purpose of satisfying that segment of the gaming market who spends most of their time on iOS stuff these days but wants something meatier and more substantial. given the power under the hood I think it could attract a lot of attention from all the Steam indie devs too if enough people buy into the platform.

Best version of FIFA yet. Loving the extra control from back screen shooting, flick kick football style free kicks, front touch through balls & passing into space.

JCL, Tuesday, 28 February 2012 02:36 (thirteen years ago)

i have to train myself to hold the vita like it is a dainty madeleine so i don't autoshoot the ball into the stands every time i hit the front 1/3 of the pitch. aside from that, yeah it's pretty excellent.

my only complaint about Virtua Tennis 4 is that casual mode is too easy, other than that WAU WHAT A GAME

robbery by sudden snatching (DJP), Tuesday, 28 February 2012 14:29 (thirteen years ago)

does it have a weird quest mode where you can power up a custom player and unlock new courts and stuff? old gameboy advance one had something like that and it was fun.

original bgm, Tuesday, 28 February 2012 15:23 (thirteen years ago)

It most certainly does! They added a semi-annoying random board game component to it where you are basically traveling across a map with randomly generated "flight tickets" that can move you 1 to 4 spaces, plus they've added weird "accidents" that make you lose money or get hurt. That part kind of sucks but it is semi-relevant in that in the older versions basically allowed you to play pretty much every single tournament without making any choices/sacrifices; now, if you try to do that you will find yourself sidelined when the big tournaments start with accruing penalties against you for not being there on time.

robbery by sudden snatching (DJP), Tuesday, 28 February 2012 15:28 (thirteen years ago)

I haven't played Virtua Tennis for the first one, where I thought "huh, how entertaining could a tennis game really be? Weird." Then I pop it into the Dreamcast and suddenly a world of awesome was unleashed.

It's a little funny though, because I'm enjoying the hell of out Hot Shots Golf and Wipeout & both of those are more of the same too.

psp games that are awesome besides monster hunter:

3rd birthday: parasite eve 3, makes no sense and lol japan the chick's clothes disintegrate over the course of a mission. good shooting, big bosses. read some people comparing the gameplay to mass effect 2 but idgi as this game is actually fun.

"legend of heroes": "trails in the sky": lol japan again, animu rpg, people talk and talk and talk and the main character is a 16 year old girl and everyone says "..." all the time. BUT it feels as if someone with some amount of sense sat down and decided not to implement all the horrible things that typically cripple jrpgs. for example: one can O-button thru the text really fast and not accidentally miss anything or decline an impt quest or something. the text itself is almost funny sometimes. the battle system is p fast. no random encounters. crafting is available but not necessary. the magic system is basically materia which fuck the haters is the best jrpg magic system ever. music rules especially the goofy jazzy fusion battle theme.

i think i've spent more time playing video games in the past week than i did in the previous six months.

adam, Monday, 5 March 2012 15:58 (thirteen years ago)

JCL, Monday, 5 March 2012 20:14 (thirteen years ago)

xxpost the PSP reboot of Tactics Ogre is really great too. they put in lots of work to make sure it doesn't feel like a decade-and-a-half-old SRPG (eg leveling is more reasonable, new translation for the text, etc). definitely preferable to the slowdown-prone PSP FFT game.

“We’re having a more difficult time than we had anticipated in terms of getting support from third-party publishers, but that’s our job,” Sony Computer Entertainment Worldwide Studio President Shuhei Yoshida

Sony tried to get western studios on board, and neglected Japanese developers.
Western studios were uninterested though, and meanwhile Nintendo pinched PSPs break-out hit Monster Hunter and as a result 3DS is murdering Vita in Japan. Japan is the only market that seems interested in a dedicated portable gaming system though, both 3DS & Vita stinking up the sales charts in the west.

sound shapes is a sort of fun music maker and a sort of fun platformer. adds up to fun.

i only fucked with the level editor a little bit, was able to crank out a fake early 00s kompakt thing pretty quickly, i imagine truly dedicated types will create some interesting shit.

do we know a date for jet set radio??

adam, Friday, 10 August 2012 19:22 (thirteen years ago)

dates for jet set radio were announced today...

PlayStation Plus: September 11
PlayStation Network: September 18
Xbox LIVE Arcade and PC: September 19
PlayStation Vita: October 16

JCL, Friday, 10 August 2012 19:24 (thirteen years ago)

The thing about Sound Shapes for me is that I know I would never bother with the music/level creation and as a pure platformer, there doesn't seem to be enough there (at least in the videos I watched). I love the look of it, but it just doesn't seem like something I would actually play very much. Other games that have promised great user developed content in the past (Trials, Little Big Planet, N+) always have let me down because it's not worth the impossible effort to sort the good stuff out of all the crap that gets uploaded.

I think it's a big problem for the Vita's future that its most interesting looking upcoming releases (Jet Set Radio, Retro City Rampage, Persona 4) are all available elsewhere. It's still early, but so far its game library is very disappointing. Hopefully a few interesting things get announced at Gamescom next week, but I do feel like the Vita is very close to dead.

However, I'd definitely buy a portable Dead Souls / Demon's Souls.

Ok, I picked one of these up yesterday because I had an 8 hour flight and I'll be away from my home consoles for 3 weeks and I had an iphone 4 to trade in and I was feeling increasingly weird about having all those vita games available via PS+ without actually being able to play them.

First impressions are 1) The user interface is no friendlier than the PS3, seems like Sony are just plain bad at this stuff nowadays. 2) Uncharted is pretty stunning, really does feel odd and great (much more than I thought it would) to be playing what feels like a current gen proper console game on a handheld, but 3) Uncharted games are so strange, I like platformers, I like 3rd person shooters, I like puzzle-based adventures, I even like hidden object games and cute touch screen minigames. I just don't want to play all those things at the same time. 4) I still love lumines but it hasn't changed at all. 5) Wipeout is great on this but why did they switch to that dumbed-down default control system without the airbrakes?

Haven't yet tried Pinball Arcade (I expect I'll love it), Gravity Rush, MGS Collection, Jet Set Radio, Big Sky Infinity. Battery held out surprisingly well though, I got almost 5 and a half hours solid play out of it, a lot more than I expected.

they also announced a much cheaper to make Vita with LCD instead of OLED screen.

( X '____' )/ (zappi), Monday, 9 September 2013 10:46 (twelve years ago)

Apparently any game which makes use of the touchscreen/gyros/back panel/etc won't get released for the Vita TV. Way to discourage developers from making use of the things that make your console unique.

The use case that does make some sense to me is "stream your PS4 games to this in a second room instead of buying a second PS4" but it'd need to be a chunk cheaper for that to be particularly compelling.

Pretty much just bought one of these for Persona 4 and I don't even CARE MAN

What else should I get? Already have Hotline Miami on PC, and the show on PS3 (might rebuy anyway), Terraria on PC... I think Wipeout is crossplay...

I've Seen rRootage (Will M.), Saturday, 14 September 2013 21:29 (twelve years ago)

I fucking LOVE Spelunky, although it's on PC too (and with a daily challenge mode to boot). Still, for indie darlings like it Spelunky/Terraria/Rogue Legacy/Binding of Isaac/Plants vs. Zombies/Hotline Miami/Retro City Rampage etc., there really is something to be said for being able to play these games whenever, wherever, in short bursts or long draw-out sessions (and with solid physical controls too); it's an indie gamer's dream console. Just waiting for the inevitable port of Cave Story so that I can buy it AGAIN.

Other than that, Earth Defense Force (run around killing giant bugs in a b-movie atmosphere), Rayman Origins (this is apparently about to be free soon on PS+ so hold off on spending, but it is a REALLY good platformer), MLB The Show if you like baseball games (and if you have the console version you can pick up & play games from one to the other pretty easily), Disgaea 3 (PORTABLE DISGAEA), Pixeljunk Monsters Deluxe (the definitive version [for now; they've said this like five times now] of the only tower defense game I ever liked, and Little Big Planet 2 are all crazy fun. And then all the PSP legacy games (Tactics Ogre! The Warriors! Half-Minute Hero! Valkyria Chronicles 2) and PS1 legacy games (Symphony of the Night! Grandia! Tomba!) and the minis (BUT WHERE IS FUCKING PAC-MAN DX OR EVEN CE COME ON PEOPLE)!

Seriously, there are games for fucking days on this thing; I love it a lot.

Ordered one of these, seeing as there are some decent deals coming about now and I just got PS Plus. Got the 3G + Wifi version, with a 16GB card, one of those "10 'great' games" download things (LBP, Wipeout 2048, Motorstorm RC seem the ones worth mentioning), plus a code for FIFA, all for £145 which doesn't feel too steep. Should hopefully get it tomorrow in time for a bunch of travel I have coming up over the next month.

I can see myself just ending up using it to final get round to playing Final Fantasy VII which I bought on PSN ages ago.

CraigG, Wednesday, 20 November 2013 16:07 (eleven years ago)

Get it down to 150, 200 with a decent memory card and i will buy tomorrow. No idea why this is my magic price range but it totally is.

Strangers look on with a discernible, barely contained ‘wow’. (forksclovetofu), Thursday, 21 November 2013 03:57 (eleven years ago)

Definitely dropping in price quite steadily over this side of the water. HMV are selling old stock so you can grab just a Vita on its own for about £130 at the moment, but once you add £62 for a 32Gig card (wait, it's cheaper to buy two 16GB cards than one 32GB card on Amazon!?) it's not great, which is why I grabbed one of the bundles. Like others, if it wasn't for PS Plus I wouldn't be buying this at all, but I figure if all I spend is £145 (as I have a PS3 to justify PS+ anyway), it only needs to deliver a few decent free games so I don't feel like it was a waste.

CraigG, Thursday, 21 November 2013 08:18 (eleven years ago)

something kinda driving me crazy is that there is such a poor content management system -- i tried to delete everything (except netflix at 30mb and my p4 saves at 4mb) and there were still ~500mb missing from the "max". JimD, Saturday, 13 December 2014 12:49 (ten years ago)

i should really be posting on this thread more.

i have been playing this thing a bunch! aside from being a pretty dope device on which to play PS classics (started my MGS replay on PS3; moved the save and the game to my vita to continue) and a never-ending stream of free PS plus games (started fez again, loving it on here. also: gravity rush, uncharted, dragon's crown, spelunky, luftrausers, rogue legacy, olliolli2 all in various stages of backburner and/or mid-play), I've also been getting into these Spike Chunsoft visual novel things. Specifically, Danganronpa and Danganronpa 2 (although I bought Zero Escape so that's probably next).

I think I was already pretty effusive about DGR1 in the year-end poll but i'll say it again -- get on this if you have a vita! it's insane! the second one is so far a tiny bit of a letdown imo, but still good (and if you like the first as much as I did, it's a foregone conclusion, you'll play 2 anyway).

also last night i stared at my screen mouth agape because i unlocked a trophy called "Is it medicine or social skill?". The game is already full of twisty turny plot stuff which i was already like "wtffffffff" before the trophy, and then it popped up and i was like NOW YOU'RE QUOTING THE KNIFE? GET OUT OF MY BRAIN.

GGGOAT: greatest goat game of all time (Will M.), Thursday, 12 March 2015 22:15 (ten years ago)

AC Liberty and the vita Killzone were both something like 60% off last month so I picked those up. Haven't touched Killzone yet. AC is something I've never played before so I don't know how this sits relative to others in the series but it so far feels hugely linear and gameplay light, I'm pretty much just walking from cutscene to cutscene with the option of collecting stuff here and there on the way if I can convince myself its worthwhile. Maybe that's normal for AC.

I hit a wall with Little Big Planet because I mostly play vita on the train, and I got to a level where it wanted me to start tilting the console around. I ain't doing that in public. But I feel like I'm pretty close now to having played every AAA vita game to ever come out so i guess that's something to aim for (does DGR count as one of those? You've convinced me to try it either way).

JimD, Friday, 13 March 2015 10:53 (ten years ago)

I doubt it counts as "AAA Vita". It's way too niche. Persona 4 minus the RPG, plus light Phoenix Wright-ing. I think the world collectively yawns and shrugs when you say "visual novel..." (I do too, though, so this game is more exception than rule.)

Glad you'll play it too! I really hope this console gets more love in the future... I really like it, and I love weird Japanese handheld games, but it seems like I maybe picked the wrong horse this time around. Looking at Atlus's releases on 3DS vs. Vita is painful. They get SMT4, countless Etrian Odysseys, Devil Summoner, and we get a dancing game?!

(well... and Persona 4, which is why I bought this thing in the first place... I guess I can't complain.)

GGGOAT: greatest goat game of all time (Will M.), Friday, 13 March 2015 17:29 (ten years ago)

Maybe in 100 years someone will say damn Dawn was dope. (forksclovetofu), Friday, 13 March 2015 18:13 (ten years ago)

Persona 4 minus the RPG

Haha I can't tell you how appealing to me this is, given that I recently gave up on persona 4, 60 hours in, after one to many "long tedious crawl through a zero challenge dungeon only to reach a boss I had no chance against" situations. Loved everything else about it but I'm too old for that kind of jrpg grind.

The shine is coming off remote play a little for me. I'm getting connection drops around once every 15 minutes, ps4 is on ethernet, vita is literally 2 feet from my wireless router. Tried swapping out the router for a completely different one and it had no effect, so it can only be down to Sony hardware one way or another, leaves me without any other troubleshooting options really. And that's same-building LAN play, I've still not managed a playable experience over an Internet connection.

JimD, Saturday, 14 March 2015 08:14 (ten years ago)

yeah, i only used remote play once, and i went through a few menus, and i was like "...i don't know about this."

olliolli 2 on the vita on the other hand i think i like more than the ps4 version. might be the controls or the lack of input lag or something but it is great!

and i need to take back what i said about danganronpa 2 being inferior... the end is some all-time mindfuck japanese video games shit. love it.

GGGOAT: greatest goat game of all time (Will M.), Monday, 16 March 2015 14:36 (ten years ago)

still waiting on that one. also waiting on the Vita versions of Super Mega Baseball (PLEASE), Towerfall: Ascension (PLEASE BUT NOT QUITE AS MUCH AS SUPER MEGA BASEBALL), Bastion, Papers Please, Hyper Light Drifter, Project Phoenix, Super Time Force Ultra, River City Ransom Underground, the second Trails In The Sky (seriously ugh @ that acronym), and Cosmic Star Heroine. but ugh "there are no good games coming out for Vita because it's a dead system" or something. I feel like the Vita has (or could have) a perfect place alongside Steam - a place where indie titles can break out in a strictly-regulated hardware environment, allowing them to make a definitive version of their game (although you can certainly do that on your own these days). but it's just such a great little handheld jukebox for indie thoroughbreds and weird little games which, when done right, totally justify things like buttons and d-pads. the Vita could absolutely be a console for the ages steering into its reputation being Steam's opportunistic little stepbrother brother.

also I feel like I mentioned this in some other thread, but if you're looking for a grip to make your Vita more ergonomic I really can't say enough good things about the PDP Trigger Grip (although I have an original Vita so idk what folks who use later models should use). they used to be cheap (I actually ended up buying two bc I broke my first after stepping on it like a living anti-drinking poster) but then I guess prices have started creeping upwards ever since stock started running low. regardless, Amazon still seems to have some:

http://www.amazon.com/PSVita-Trigger-Grips-Sony-PS-Vita/dp/B0072A4JVW/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1437718250&sr=8-2&keywords=pdp+trigger+grip+vita

they are stupid comfortable and have really good trigger buttons built in so if you are thinking about spending money to make your vita more comfortable when using it around the house (unless you have some giant bag, it's gonna make your Vita too big for any case), consider saving up for one of these or stalking eBay or something.

the lesson, as always: make sure to cop every PS Plus game for every platform on the basis of "just in case down the line," as it was given away for free like three years ago.

one of these days I feel like I should take a searching and fearless moral inventory of the effect of PS+ on my willingness to spend for games; there are a number of titles I'm holding back on buying because I"m sure that they'll be on PS+ at some point. on the other hand I do impulse-buy more random shit that goes on sale so on a practical level it may average out in the end.

grinding like a jolly elf (jamescobo), Friday, 24 July 2015 06:40 (ten years ago)

and I continue to mourn like the Woman in Black for the continued absence of Pac-Man C.E. and/or DX; it's just too perfect. there's even a mini of C.E. already and of course it's one of like five minis that's not available on the Vita or PS4's PSNs.

of course over on the 3DS side they need to do a whole new round of Pac-Man Vs with Wii U and a bunch of 3DSeseseses (and Nintendo deviously forces you to keep your old model around when you upgrade rather than trade it in for credit, so anyone more than one generation deep on the 3DS has another one probably laying around somewhere so people probably have more of these than they think), so there are basically a lot of Pac-Man related threads that need to get picked up in general imo

grinding like a jolly elf (jamescobo), Friday, 24 July 2015 06:57 (ten years ago)

2. How big on average are the games? Trying to judge what size memory card (ugh) to buy

jamiesummerz, Friday, 24 July 2015 10:33 (ten years ago)

2. retail games are roughly between 1-3GB, indies 100MB-1GB. check that the games you want can be played on the PS TV as some are blacklisted - sometimes for good reasons (e.g. game uses Vita touchscreen) and sometimes for no good reason (Danganronpa in EU, some PS1 and PSP games)

five months pass...

I got one for Christmas. With just the stock 8GB card, so my experience has been limited thus far, but I dig it. Almost everything peripheral to the actual game playing seems like junk (countless errors trying to connect to and download from the PS Store, remote access to music and video on my PC doesn't work at all, lots of browser errors and time-outs) but I've come to expect that from my PS3 so I'm dealing. The ease of stopping and starting a game (either via navigating between windows/apps or just turning the Vita off) is perfect, as I'd been thinking that the inconvenience of finding a save point in a game would be incompatible with my need to, like, get off the train and go to work.

I've been slowly accruing a collection (through PS+ and deep discount sales) and also intentionally sidelining most of the crossplay games I've bought with the intention of eventually snagging a Vita, so I have easily 100+ Vita-compatible games to dig into now. I'm totally spoiled for choice and a little paralyzed. So naturally I've been spending most of this week playing the decades-old FF1 (transferring my saved game from the PS3 was pretty painless) and Chrono Trigger. Oh, and Touch My Katamari. Having a good, portable Katamari game just about makes this thing worthwhile all on its lonesome.

Some Pizza Grudge From Twenty Years Ago (Old Lunch), Wednesday, 30 December 2015 14:42 (nine years ago)

Okay, an extended Katamari jag this morning was my first physical experience of overplaying a game. Headache, blurred vision, nausea, all the stuff they warn you about but that I've always scoffed at. And I've played a lot of games for way too long before with no ill effects. Don't know if it was just that game specifically or staring at the Vita screen for too long but that's something I'll need to be mindful of.

Some Pizza Grudge From Twenty Years Ago (Old Lunch), Friday, 1 January 2016 22:01 (nine years ago)

we might just get double-digit ILX Vita owners before Sony gives up on this thing entirely

grinding like a jolly elf (jamescobo), Saturday, 9 January 2016 17:28 (nine years ago)

Sony technically has, yeah? I thought I'd read that only third-party developers were making Vita games at this point.

I'm way into it. It's nice to be able to play games on the train and it's nice that a lot of the games seem geared towards shorter playtimes. Beyond the Vita-specific games, there are a ton of PS1 and PSP classics I haven't gotten around to. PS3 cross play and cross save has been pretty painless on the games that support it. Remote play (even leaving aside the fact that only like seven PS3 games support it) is pretty much a laggy bust, unfortunately.

I can't even imagine what magic lies ahead once I can afford to buy a memory card larger than the perfunctory 8gb one that came with the system.

Beef Wets (Old Lunch), Saturday, 9 January 2016 18:28 (nine years ago)

agreed, the Vita library is super stacked; you are in for a good time. I would have guessed that Sony would have wanted to keep memory cards cheap in order to incentivize people into buying more stuff on PSN, but maybe proprietary memory cards are the harsh truth of being the company that runs an Amazon Prime-level awesome deal like PS+

grinding like a jolly elf (jamescobo), Saturday, 9 January 2016 18:45 (nine years ago)

proprietary memory cards are the harsh reality of a company with a history of shitty proprietary formats, from DAT tapes to minidisc to ATRAC to MemorySticks. The prices they charge for their Vita memory cards can be 8 times the equivalent microSD card, fuck supporting that bullshit.

( X '____' )/ (zappi), Saturday, 9 January 2016 19:17 (nine years ago)

yeah but that screen

grinding like a jolly elf (jamescobo), Saturday, 9 January 2016 19:55 (nine years ago)

A lot of Sony's practices which seem like unfair cash grabs are ultimately and counterintuitively geared towards disincentivizing the consumer from giving Sony even more of their money. Like, for instance, if the PS3 could support more than a 1TB drive or if I could save all of my downloaded PSN games to an external hard drive for later retrieval and installation, I would buy literal shitloads of games. But I'm pretty much limited to buying a more sensible amount of whatever will actually fit on my console. If 64GB Vita cards weren't so expensive, I'd buy several of them and happily fill them up. So because Sony wants to charge $100+ for their proprietary nonsense, they've potentially lost out on hundreds of dollars more in game sales. And I'm just one Vita owner.

Beef Wets (Old Lunch), Saturday, 9 January 2016 20:04 (nine years ago)

I really need to upgrade my memory card. So many games to try but I can only park a handful on my system at a time.

Zero search results for Orgarhythm! Haven't played too much yet but it's kinda great. A real-time strategy/rhythm game with a dancing god and his dancing troops taking down enemies on the beat.

Professor Bworlph (Old Lunch), Monday, 18 January 2016 19:40 (nine years ago)

if I could save all of my downloaded PSN games to an external hard drive for later retrieval and installation

pretty sure that the online content is redownloadable forever, including the PS+ content

which is odd and irritating because, even if not gaming, it's worth going in and clicking on each game to add it to your library... even if you don't own that platform, because if you later own it, all those clicks become useful

holy shit - 2k apparently released a port of Enemy Unknown a few days ago! apparently it's pretty buggy but this + Earthbound showing up just in time for my trip to Knoxville for Big Ears is delightful news

FYI, y'all, I've taken to combing through the Vita listings in the PSN store every week because I always seem to find sale items that aren't listed on, y'know, the weekly sale page. That seriously has to be the most inept corporate website I've ever encountered.

For instance, Earth Defense Force 2 and the new Corpse Party are both currently on sale and neither is listed as such.

I inherited one of these; is there anything I need to be playing?

EDF 2 and Persona 4 Golden

There are two Zero Escape games available... Virtue's Last Reward and and Zero Time Dilemma. The first one, 999, may also be, I can't remember. Tbh I've only played ZE2, but it is surprisingly fantastic.

Big, big, big second on Persona 4 Golden. Pretty much one of the only JRPGs I've had the patience to complete in the past ~5 years (this, and Tactics Ogre PSP, and Persona 3 Portable, pretty much).

Danganronpa 1 and 2 are fantastic as well.

A bunch of stuff you may have played on other consoles, are very good on the Vita... Spelunky, Everyday Shooter, Telltale stuff (Walking Dead, Wolf Among Us), Fez, Hotline Miami, Dragon's Crown... if I think of any more I'll post but that's almost 20 games, should keep you busy (esp. with the length of Persona 4).

And then there's the PSP library you can play too...

I honestly don't think I've played all that many Vita exclusives, tbh. I have a bunch but I still haven't upgraded past the 8 GB memory card so that limits my options. I use it mainly for PS1 classics/old stuff in general and anything cross-platform. It's a pretty great portable RPG machine, if that's your bag. I've been playing a lot of XCOM and Dragon's Crown lately.

I can imagine that people might pooh-pooh the Vita out of hand for its dearth of impressive exclusives, but it's pretty cool to be able to play a lot of those non-exclusive games on a handheld platform, imo. RPGs, f'rinstance, that I'd likely never get through at home but that I can easily chip away at an hour at a time on the train.

i have been playing the first persona game. it is not a very good game. it's interesting the ways it seems to have been retrofit in light of the success of the latter iterations tho
