- There Is No Other Information Yet!

Talk is that this is the make or break year where they have to deliver to stop the hated FIFA claiming its crown. Personally, I never understood the hate for PES 2008 and will be 800% delighted if they do nothing but reduce the number of annoying non-fouls/resultant automatic CPU free kick goals and provide a penalty taking system that involves more than pressing a random direction

was VERY disappointed that the US team in PE2008 didn't have the real players

Tracer Hand, Tuesday, 24 June 2008 14:25 (seventeen years ago)

the current PES is some bullshit. it stopped being fun for some reason. there seemed to be a logic to the previous versions, from PES3 onweards anyhow, that was compromised in PES6 and killed off in 2008. it's difficult to explain because it's not one or two glaring things. anyway, supposedly 2009 is a back to the drawing board affair, which they say about FIFA every year and which to date hasn't stopped that franchise disappearing down the shitter. PES 2009 will be 50/50 chance of rebirth or death. meanwhile, all i want is a decent footie game to play.

Roberto Spiralli, Tuesday, 24 June 2008 14:32 (seventeen years ago)

i guess i'm not hard-core but PES2008 seems exactly like the previous version except with up-to-date players on the intl squads (with some glaring exceptions, like the US)

Tracer Hand, Tuesday, 24 June 2008 15:40 (seventeen years ago)

I'm skeptical that PES 2009 is going to be significantly different that 2008/2007. They keep saying the same stuff, but. Actually I only played 2008 on the wii (played 2007 on the 360 and it never captured my attention), which was fun, but a little too shallow. I'm quite happy with FIFA 08 on the ps3, except I feel like it moves a little slow, you just can't get those really speedy strikes - I've heard maybe they fixed this with the UEFA game, if that carries over to 09, I think EA will get my money again.

man, Kick Off and Kick Off 2 were the bollocks when they came out, but Sensi buried them so quickly. we were spoiled, way back when.

Roberto Spiralli, Wednesday, 25 June 2008 11:00 (seventeen years ago)

played ko2 again recently, it's not quite as good as i remembered it.

but then i played sensi soccer, the remake, and it's even worse. What's with all the fouling by the computer? quite unplayable.

Ste, Wednesday, 25 June 2008 11:26 (seventeen years ago)

i agree with roberto- my PS2 2008 version has recently been retired due to scratching and i've gone back to playing 2005- and it's a much cleaner, sharper version with more control over the players, especially off the ball.

darraghmac, Wednesday, 25 June 2008 13:01 (seventeen years ago)

how do you control players off the ball????

Tracer Hand, Wednesday, 25 June 2008 13:52 (seventeen years ago)

2008 was absolute bullshit, online play on the 360 was a laggy nightmare. I bought it and played it for about five hours then threw it in a drawer and went back to 6 (which I still play on Xbox live weekly). Will probably try this before I buy it.

jim, Wednesday, 25 June 2008 18:11 (seventeen years ago)

Also FIFA is some bullshit. Too arcadey. You can pick it up once and give someone who is a vet a real run for their money. No depth to that, too easy to score.

jim, Wednesday, 25 June 2008 18:13 (seventeen years ago)

I don't know - this is the first year I picked up FIFA and I have a really hard time scoring (though maybe I'm just no good). From what I understand the game has evolved quite a bit over the years. When was the last time you tried it?

Jeff LeVine, Wednesday, 25 June 2008 18:17 (seventeen years ago)

About a year ago maybe? Think it was the most recent one. One thing you can say for it is that it sure looks ten times better than Pro.

sorry- was referring more to the movement of players off the ball, but yeah the 'super cancel' move gives you more freedom when running off the ball too in 2005 edition.

darraghmac, Thursday, 26 June 2008 17:38 (seventeen years ago)

important that new pes. I've played all the previous ones to death until pes2008 which sucks so much I went to the enemy : fifa ! (and i'm pretty satisfied with it. slow but a lot more realistic than pes)
if pes2009 doesn't improve considerably, they will lose me forever (or until 2010).

AleXTC, Friday, 27 June 2008 15:11 (seventeen years ago)

spain v germany -

on one of my corners the guy on 2008 says "oh what's the point of putting all those men in the box if you're just going to play it short" because i do play it short, xavi to iniesta, who plays it right back to xavi, who curls a calm and and penetrating cross into the box. fabregas blocks out a defender long enough for villa to volley it home, no sweat. shut the hell up.

So how's the new PES if anyone's played a demo or something ?
As I said upthread, I went to FIFA08 and after playing the FIFA09 demo I don't think I'll go back to PES unless it's REALLY improved as the new FIFA improves on many levels (better control of the players, easier to take the ball from the cpu...).

I tried the PC demo last night - don't know how different it is than the console versions, but I thought it played pretty good (fast and pretty easy). The game also ran great, very smooth @ 1080p on my maybe slightly better than average computer (above 60fps with v-sync turned on) - unlike the FIFA demo, which ran on the slightly choppy side). Unfortunately, the graphics, animation and presentation remain exceptionally lackluster.

never mind, for i shall be freed of the shackles of my timezone very shortly so that i can joined the huddled, face-streaked masses and DL the demo to judge for myself.

Roberto Spiralli, Thursday, 2 October 2008 20:22 (seventeen years ago)

haha sorry roberto! it plays... funny. it seems very light (?), which seems to be a criticism many people levelled at the last iteration (pes 2008). certainly not as 'heavy' as pes4/5

so far (1 game), it seems to play like pes and it's difficult to see what they've improved; of course, it's hard playing using a 360 pad, which is awful; I suspect my complaints about the feel are rooted in my distaste for the pad

there's a video after you play a game in which it shows you the "become a legend" and "legends" mode and those look pretty neat, if only mildly diverting

the core of pes has always been about the 2player tho, which I can't test right now : /

STINKING CORPSE (cozwn), Thursday, 2 October 2008 20:26 (seventeen years ago)

haha iniesta looks like lescott!!

STINKING CORPSE (cozwn), Thursday, 2 October 2008 20:34 (seventeen years ago)

blessed fucking relief. this is more like it. i think this is going to be a good one. i don't know if i'm noticing it because constant mention of it in previews has put it at the front of my mind, but the mechanics of the ball do seem much more realistic, with the result that things like meeting a cross, intercepting a pass and shooting seem quite different to before, and much better a lot of the time. i am going to blame this for the missed sitter, two missed open goals, and the crossbar ping that i just managed in a 0-0 thrillah.

Roberto Spiralli, Thursday, 2 October 2008 23:24 (seventeen years ago)

baaderonixx, Friday, 3 October 2008 11:10 (seventeen years ago)

not everyone wants to play the same game, YMMV, etc but if people keep giving those dozy EA cunts money for that turgid piece of shit game then they will never realise how terrible it is and they will keep rolling out the same dismal product.

Roberto Spiralli, Friday, 3 October 2008 11:22 (seventeen years ago)

yeah but listen man it has all the proper kits and that

Glans Christian Christian christian Christian Andersen (MPx4A), Friday, 3 October 2008 11:37 (seventeen years ago)

imo, Man Red have never been the same since they let Van Mistelrooj go.

so, despite the terrible 5-minute montage of useless features i'm not interested in that you have to sit through at the end of every single game, i played the demo a whole bunch of time and i am willing to go on record as saying i think it is going to be SHIT HOT, at least on the PS3, i can't speak for your fancy BBCs or your Sega "Master Systems". i am kind of excitable about it now because a friend has been asking me questions about my impressions and my enthusiasm started to boil out of control (possibly too much orange squash this morning). the other big thing i noticed apart from the ball mechanics is the players' legs. your typical football game gives players' legs approximately the same mobility as subbuteo did. but this game has bucked the trend, and their legs work like they are jointed and free moving, and they control the ball realistically. a broad and obvious example i noticed is that skill players would automatically use fancy ball control if i changed direction with them sharply.

Roberto Spiralli, Friday, 3 October 2008 12:56 (seventeen years ago)

I think I might buy fifa; reading the reviews it sounds like they've improved it a whole lot and the extra online features they've added seem amazing!!! </traitor>

STINKING CORPSE (cozwn), Friday, 3 October 2008 13:12 (seventeen years ago)

the beauty about buying fifa is that you instantly get what you deserve. people will keep buying it, so it must have some appeal, but i for one am flumoxed. i feel strongly about this because you have to have a good footy game, everyone knows that, and the continuing deterioration of the fifa series hurts that.

but yeah, people deciding they want fifa instead of pes or even instead of just keeping hold of their 40 quid/60 monolopy dollars, baffle me as much as the Alphabeat crowd. if anyone buys both the Alphabeat record and fifa 2009 then we live in alternate realities and YOU ARE DEAD TO ME.

Roberto Spiralli, Friday, 3 October 2008 13:18 (seventeen years ago)

but I don't think the 'deterioration of the fifa series' narrative holds much weight really - yeah, sure, for years they coasted by on their laurels and churned out useless fifa game after useless fifa game, but in the past five years pes has outdone in terms of sales (I think) and if not certainly in terms of cachet - which has meant that EA have actually got their fingers out and tried to rely on things other than licences and likenesses

I have played PES since it was ISS on the snes; all the way through ISS deluxe; PES1 and 2 on PS1; PES3, 4, 5 on the PS2 and PES6 on xbox 360; the last major iteration was the jump from 3 to 4 which introduced lots of moves that weren't in it previously (a lot of the turns which vary the directions and speed at which you kick the ball forward etc); by my tally PES has been resting on its laurels for 2-3 iterations now

by all accounts the online code for the last one stunk; and the online code for fifa is actually lag-free

it pains me; I'm a dyed in the wool PES fan, hardcore to a fault; but it's had its time, I think

STINKING CORPSE (cozwn), Friday, 3 October 2008 13:34 (seventeen years ago)

STINKING CORPSE (cozwn), Friday, 3 October 2008 14:11 (seventeen years ago)

of course it means nothing if it plays like horseshit

STINKING CORPSE (cozwn), Friday, 3 October 2008 14:12 (seventeen years ago)

i would count Euro 2008 and the FIFA 2009 demo amongst the worst football games i have ever played. i stand by the notion of a steady deterioration in EA football games. and i do think that the generally positive reviews and sales that the series gets (because a. football game reviews are typically terrible and b. people massively overvalue having real names and kits) hides the fundamental poorness of the series from its apparently clueless developers. they make high-concept changes that will sound good on a 30-sec TV slot that they mostly abandon the next time round (cf. Madden, NHL, prob every other sports series they do).

none of the ancillary details changes the fact that the FIFA 2009 demo was a torpid, frustrating mess and the PES 2009 demo is a lot of fun.

Roberto Spiralli, Friday, 3 October 2008 14:18 (seventeen years ago)

and the importance of any additional features comes second to regular gameplay by lightyears. if the presentation looks like it's running on a C64 and it has no extra features at all but the game is tasty vs cpu or 2 player then my needs are satisfied. i realise not everyone will feel the same way, but that's where i'm coming from.

Roberto Spiralli, Friday, 3 October 2008 14:22 (seventeen years ago)

I'll be keeping my PES5 on the go for the time being. still trying to build that perfect master league team.

The movement of players off the ball is still a major problem for me in the newer versions. Wouldn't be bothered with fifa, tbh.

yeah, I did pick up the wii version last year - didn't play near as much as I probably should have, but I did find the shitty wii graphics to be a real negative. It did some things good though... the new wii control system for passing and attacking is amazing and worked great... however shooting by shaking the remote never felt right to me. But the wii game's real problem was the simplified, broken defense control scheme... which made 50% of the game quite poor

Jeff LeVine, Friday, 3 October 2008 17:15 (seventeen years ago)

This is throwing me a bit. Half of me thinks, oh my god what a load of horseshit (main gripes being: guys feel like they're ice skating, not just because it's faster than PES 6 which I usually play, because most football games are faster than that, but just because there's something a bit insubstantial about the movement that I can't really put well in to words because it's late and I'm ineloquent; seemingly having no control over the keeper when he has the ball, like I can't choose whether to throw it out or punt it up the park, WTF?, I never punt it, it's a totally lottery as to whether you're going end up with the ball or not) and the other half of me thinks "this seems ok" (like the way the crossing is now, like not having stupidly out of date teams, graphics are decent, scoring from a corner seems a little bit easier than in 6) and this is all tempered by the fact that I've only played against the computer and not against a real person, because I never play football games against the computer and the whole point of PES is to hump my pals Fuzz/Baz/Paul etc. and rub it in their face, and because the computer doesn't fuck up enough to give you lots of varied goalscoring opportunities so I can see how that, incredibly important aspect, of the game is going. Have found it dishearteningly easy to round the keeper thus far but that might just be a case of luck (often find that easy in the older versions).

jim, Saturday, 4 October 2008 23:31 (seventeen years ago)

And if that healthy does of tl;dr wasn't enough, the keepers fumble the ball too often from shots they should really hold. I understand this was a problem in 2008 but I didn't play that enough to know.

jim, Sunday, 5 October 2008 13:27 (seventeen years ago)

2008 keepers were about right, I thought

PES seems to see-saw each year between having retarded/superhuman keepers and tolerable referees/referees who blow up every five seconds for nothing and book you for every mistimed tackle

Glans Christian Christian christian Christian Andersen (MPx4A), Sunday, 5 October 2008 16:05 (seventeen years ago)

Yeah referees seem a tad draconian in this, as they did in 2008. Only good thing about that is that on xbox live you encounter so many goons who get a lucky goal and go ahead of you only to foul you whenever you look like you might have a move on.

Still not sure about the keepers, played earlier on and scored 3 goals that had resulted from shots spilled by the keeper. Haven't really found my shooting boots in this yet, haven't scored from outside the box yet.

I was a PES fanatic for years then switched to fifa08 which was good and now fifa09 which is great. not going back to PES anytime soon judging from the two latest ones...

AleXTC, Thursday, 16 October 2008 12:53 (seventeen years ago)

aw, you were doing so well until you slipped in the "fifa09 which is great" part and ruined your credibility.

the IGN UK review separates the new PES/FIFA iterations by having FIFA as the more authentic and realistic and PES as clearly the more fun. in terms of importance for me, there isn't even a contest between the two, but maybe this split explains the variance in the experience people are having with each.

although, i'm not sure on what gravity-heavy planet people have been playing football that they think FIFA is realistic, but such things i suppose are in the eye of the beholder [2: the legend of darkmoon]

PES was always the authentic game and you (I) loved it for it; you dudes are like republicans

PES today is a shadow of its former self and tht saddens me; I am a PES dude; always will be

FIFA09 is fun and heavy and realistic and deep and all that good stuff; the online stuff is seamless and the game it plays on the park is impeccable

flamewar!!!!!!!!!!! let's do ps3 vs. 360 next

coznebb (cozwn), Thursday, 16 October 2008 13:21 (seventeen years ago)

old FIFA was arcadey but never fun; old PES was deep and played a tight game of football which couldn't be exploited for easy goals (see old FIFA) and which was good for playing a mixture of different types of football

tbh; PES09 could be just as good as PES4 for all that I care but I played the demo a bunch and it didn't seem to have moved on tht much from PES4; what have they added to the core game mechanic?

the animations are stilted and very last-gen; FIFA's player movement has a cloud of possibilities! it seems that any thing that can happen on a football field has been animated into FIFA; this means the game feels and looks more realistic; PES little dudes are like autobots

still, the player skins do look nicer in PES; FIFA dudes look like zombies up close; tho who plays football games up close? : D

whatchu talkin bout willis? as soon as PES tried to get super authentic it went down the tubes. they have got over that now and that's why the new one is so promising. it's not like it's wacky and divorced from reality, but it's quicker and smoother. those are demonstrable qualities, not my personal opinions.

also, lol, pay to go online much?

here's some useful information about the pro evolution soccer 2009 videogame:

Konami unveils first PES 2009 club update as eagerly-awaited football epic hits stores across Europe…

As Konami Digital Entertainment GmbH’s PES 2009 hits stores today for PLAYSTATION®3, Xbox 360 and PC-DVD, the publisher has announced a free downloadable update for early November, expanding upon the games licensed teams and in-game elements.

The download will be available in about three weeks, and updates four Spanish sides – Athletico Madrid, Sevilla, Racing Santander and Valladolid, – all of whom will be officially licensed. Furthermore, it will also update the kits and team rosters of many teams within the game. The UEFA Champions League mode will also benefit from the new update, with twelve more teams added to the club list, with proper UEFA Champions League kits and kit markings added. Amongst the teams fully updated within this mode now will be Marseille, Juventus, and Basel.

The new raft of additions further demonstrate Konami’s commitment to expanding the licence roster in the PES series. Every aspect of PES 2009 has been reworked from the ground up, with new player models, AI elements and physics routines all combining to create the most advanced and realistic football game ever. The game also includes new Become a Legend and Legends mode, wherein players guide one player within a team either solo or online. Expanding upon this, the update also adds a new Theatre of Legends function which allows users to upload replay data for friends to view, and to view those of others.

The PES series has always been famed for its deep yet accessible control system, but the new game is aiming even higher. PES 2009 offers an unprecedented level of control, redefining the intricacies of first touch, close control and ball distribution, while also enhancing its shooting and AI mechanisms to create an all-round footballing experience. New control systems wherein the player can now perform tricks and feints without the use of special moves have been implemented, and the way the player guides the ball has been changed. The PES series has always treated the ball as a separate entity, but new calculations related to the air resistance and friction of the ground make passing and movement in PES 2009 a great deal more realistic.

“PES 2009 is already a million seller in pre-orders alone, but these new additions show how we are determined to continually improve the content of the game,” commented Jon Murphy PES European Team Leader for Konami Digital Entertainment GmbH. “We hope the updated team data and new UEFA Champions League elements will show our ongoing support for PES 2009’s team rosters, and look to continually enhancing such sections in the coming year at no extra cost.”

So there we have it, news which will surely please PES players. We've been waiting for some concrete information on the DLC every since it was confirmed in an interview with Seabass, and here are the key points from this press release

It's FREE
It will be available in early November, NOT tomorrow as other sites reported
Four new Spanish Licenses
Updated rosters and kits
Updated Champions League teams and badges
Theatre of Legends mode

this is out today in the UK; I promised not to troll so I won't but reading the EG thread on this isn't pleasant tho there is a very heavy fifa09 leaning over there so make of it what you will

the seemingly-open minded folx over there aren't making many positive noises either

who is picking it up from here?

example post from EG:

Got my copy today and have played it for a couple of hours. It's just not very good tbh. Not as realistic as FIFA and not as "fun" and arcadey as PES 2008. I just don't see what it brings to the table. Comparing it to FIFA is like comparing Clive Barker's Jericho by Clive Barker to The Orange Box or something equally as silly.

They've even ruined the one thing people always praise PES for, which is responsiveness. In what I assume is an attempt to replicate FIFA, they've added in extra frames of animation, making it just as allegedly unresponsive as FIFA is. Every player handles like a double-decker bus and runs at the speed of an arthritic tortoise when they have the ball. You can go clean through with someone like Ronaldo and someone like Materazzi gain ground on you, even sprinting flat out by tapping R1.

The AI is pants as well. I won 3-0 on Top Player in my first game and have only conceeded one goal so far in about 7 or 8 matches, and that came from a bug in the goalkeeper AI. Namely I saved a penalty, there was a scramble for the rebound and the keeper just stood there doing nothing. They eventually got a shot off and the keeper just watched as it rolled past him, apparently stuck in some kind of post-penalty save animation until the ball hit the net.

Online is an absoloute joke at the moment as well. Even connecting is a problem right now, with seveal attempts resulting in some unspecified error. When I did get on I noticed you need one of those shitting Konami ID things, and if you don't have one it pops up the web browser with a massive form to fill in to obtain one. Even worse is that the website is incredibly slow at the moment.

Fortunately I remembered I already had one from the equally tedious process of signing up for the MGS Online beta, so I used that. It then throws you into a lobby system which is segregated by country and then further still into rooms of 100, which to me seems like it'll only limit your possible opponents. It looks nearly exactly the same as the old PS2 online interface, and is a step back from last year's simple one IMO.

Played two games online, both full of lag and teleporting players. Though my opponents only had yellow on the connection indicator, whereas I had green. Was drawing one game at half time and either the other guy quit or we both got disconnected. The other one I was winning 3-1 when the (different) guy again quit. Third try the other person just sat there doing nothing in the menus waiting for the timer to run down, and you still can't quit out of a match without exiting to the XMB. Marvellous.

It's horrid. Plays like an absoloute dog, lacking in the looks department, laughable out of date squads which may or may not be fixed in a month depending on Konami's definition of "many" and the online seems like a clusterfuck again (though I'm willing to accept it may be launch day overload -- even though there were only about 4 or 5000 people online when I was on).

Despite the inevitable accusations of FIFA fanboydom, I've been a PES/ISS supporter for as long as anyone (my first love being ISS Deluxe on the SNES). This is just an unacceptable effort though. If I didn't know better I'd say PES 2009 was an expensive practical joke, or some kind of experiment into the lengths of brand loyalty. How anyone could enjoy this over FIFA is baffling to me. It's awful.

All IMO of course.

joeks

from what I hear, 6's multiplayer code was OK darraghmac; it's closer to PES4/5 than PES2008 (which is apparently the real stay-away in the series, tho I never played it beyond the demo) - you can pick up PES4 for £1 these days, 6 shouldn't that expensive either

coznebb (cozwn), Friday, 24 October 2008 16:06 (seventeen years ago)

ok, that's the plan so. 5 or 6 would be my preferred versions on the PS2 so far anyway.

also- kevin prince boateng and adel taraabt are phenomenal in PES6. I'll go for that one.

this thread is packed with nonsense. 2008 was just as good as previous PES games. Just stick to PS2.

As for the new one I've played it on Xbox plenty and I can't wait to play it more, the keepers are not by any stretch of the imagination "fucked", they're incredibly good compared to other editions.

All I've heard about Fifa is how woeful it is yet again. I'm never buying FIFA and I've no worries that the new PES which I bought y'day on PS2 will be great.

also sorry but playing the demo and giving up on the game cos of it is utter bullshit, those demos aren't even exact emulations of the finished game, I've never had any kind of rounded opinion of PES after one of them, just gave them the benefit of the doubt and bought the game.

Hmm, not sure how keen I am on this. Just got it tonight, first game online was pretty laggy in parts and the refereeing was ridiculous. Won 5-1 with an Eto'o hat-trick. And if anything is likely to keep me playing this and not reverting back to 6 it's the awesome pace in the Barca squad, Eto'o, Messi and Henry + Dani Alves on the wing = profit.

what U cry 4 (jim), Monday, 3 November 2008 02:47 (seventeen years ago)

I tried the demo real briefly earlier, it looked good for sure, but it still doesn't really feel like PES on ps2 to me. will try it out more seriously later, just wish they hadn't put that fucking movie at the end of every game, kind of goes against the purpose of a demo if you ask me.

And I just got the Fifa demo as well...!

i am feeling kind of hung out to dry about the new footie releases this year. FIFA really is dreadful and i cannot rationalise people enjoying that game, it just defeats me. the new PES is their best in-game product for a few years but the online play sounds like it is lousy again, and stuck out in the colonies i am going to need online play. a read a lot of people are buying both to get around this, but fuck that. if it's a choice between both or neither than i will spend my cash on something that actually works, thanks all the same.

bought it. played this mode all weekend. the FP perspective is great. enjoying the game very much so far, goalies not a problem.

darraghmac, Monday, 10 November 2008 13:15 (seventeen years ago)

I abandoned the first person view cos it was too unnatural in the end. I'm playing on top player and it's a really hard slog. I started at Wigan, spent a horrible time at Deportivo playing lone striker in a 5-4-1, then moved to Mallorca and finally scored my first goal against Real Madrid. Now I've moved back to the UK with Middlesboro.

Ronan, Monday, 10 November 2008 14:29 (seventeen years ago)

interesting career progression...

yeah, the FP view is strange, but i'm enjoying it as a challenge. i'm still in first year, at bolton- five goals and 4 MVP so far from central midfield, but that's on the medium difficulty.

it plays ok so far, i have to say, but i'll only know for sure when i switch back to normal view.

I've found the player rater very fair, tho I'm on top player. If I fuck up or lose the ball a lot I never get MVP. Finally getting good now in my fifth season. I moved from Boro to Marseilles for some CL football and have got about 12 goals this year. MVP in a lot of games for the first time.

but we all agree that this series is no longer playing in the same league as it did back on ps2? that is, gameplay has gotten worse and appears to stay that way

i do not agree. this new one is some good shit alrite.

Rolling draadje (Roberto Spiralli), Thursday, 20 November 2008 03:14 (seventeen years ago)

i played this for a decent while on saturday, two player co-operative against computer. it wasn't half as good as the 'become a legend' mode, and the passing/control seemed pretty bad.

i was playing as spurs, though.

aforementioned 'legend' mode is great.

darraghmac, Thursday, 20 November 2008 13:16 (seventeen years ago)

your problem was deciding to play 2-player co-op vs the computer in a footie game. you can't blame the game for your poor decisions. i can't even begin to understand the appeal. you have a friend, play 1 vs 1. it's the natural order of things and you are a deviant if you think otherwise.

Trail of Dead is one of thousands of cheesy death metal acts (Roberto Spiralli), Thursday, 20 November 2008 13:31 (seventeen years ago)

No way...I always play co-op too, it's amazing the goals you score sometimes, so satisfying when one of you tears through the middle and the other lobs a through ball. Also it took about a year to win the World Cup on top player with Ireland, 5 lost finals. Genuine party atmosphere when we finally beat Spain on penalties. The problem may have been in the fictional world in which we placed this effort, Roddy Collins was manager of Ireland having left out successful AC Milan Master League side.

Local Garda, Thursday, 20 November 2008 22:56 (seventeen years ago)

if the fact that the main pleasure for me in these games is being able to lord it over my mates makes me a small man then i am a small man. a very, very small man. the humiliated tears of a friend are like ambrosia to me. on the other hand, i live in fear of the day that suddenly i'm not better than everyone else, and all of my past vainglory is revisited upon me.

this season have scored 17 goals in about 25 games for athletico. we're 3rd in the league and out of the CL. hoping this puts me in shop window for a huge move.

it's just occurred to me that

1) I'm quite lardy arsed

2) don't shave much

3) play guitar into the wee small hours.

i'm never gonna get a call up :(

if it goes on any longer I'm going to pretend I'm in a Stephen Ireland style standoff

Local Garda, Tuesday, 25 November 2008 11:51 (seventeen years ago)

yeah i'm on whatever medium level is and also i kind of cheated when i got to the champions league final with man united as I slided in first minute and fucked up paul scholes (but the computer never seems to substitute injured players)

o_O (ken c), Tuesday, 25 November 2008 12:02 (seventeen years ago)

i think i'm united's nemesis actually coming to think of it - i scored the opening goal last night in a league match with the back of my head from a corner in a 3-1 rout.

o_O (ken c), Tuesday, 25 November 2008 12:03 (seventeen years ago)

that's the fun part. i seem no more competent on screen than i would be in real life. i rely on jonathan elmander to make me look good.

particularly as i've made myself as short and fat as possible for laughs. i worry this may somehow affect my acceleration/jumping, but the stats seem separate?

darraghmac, Tuesday, 25 November 2008 12:47 (seventeen years ago)

I went back and played some Winning Eleven 8 (Pro Evo 4) this evening and was surprised by how much it felt exactly like Pro Evo 2009. I think that's a good thing?

It may be obvious, but the one thing going back taught me to appreciate is this gens 16 X 9 support. You get such a better view these days in widescreen - it's so much easier to pick out your passes, because for the most part you can see who you're passing to on the wider screen. Going back to the old game, I found I had to look down at the radar a lot more & that made trying to pass or put together a run considerably more difficult.

Jeff LeVine, Saturday, 29 November 2008 03:55 (seventeen years ago)

two months pass...

ok, the new become a legend mode aside, this game is a huge step backwards (in other words it's really quite a piece of crap) and having been an ISS/PES head for ten+ years i think about time i consider fifa, or just going back a few years and playing retro.

Redknapp out (darraghmac), Monday, 2 February 2009 14:42 (seventeen years ago)

I played this for a few hours at at the weekend and it is honestly dogshit

Glans Kafka (MPx4A), Monday, 2 February 2009 15:02 (seventeen years ago)

was a huge fan up to pes 2008 which was so bad I went to fifa... and the latest fifa is so good (and pes 2009 seems so horrible) that I've never looked back... still, I'm curious to see what the next pes will be like.

AleXTC, Monday, 2 February 2009 15:08 (seventeen years ago)

I've said that already on this thread or the fifa one, though.
sorry !

AleXTC, Monday, 2 February 2009 15:10 (seventeen years ago)

say it again.

so- latest fifa on PS2? or revert back to PES 4?

Redknapp out (darraghmac), Monday, 2 February 2009 15:21 (seventeen years ago)

Is anyone besides me excited about PES for the Wii? The 2008 version was my favorite footie game in quite a while, and if they've fixed the defense (as previews seem to suggest) 2009 should be outstanding. Though having to wait until March sucks.

EZ Snappin, Monday, 2 February 2009 15:25 (seventeen years ago)

latest fifa on 360 (and I used to play PES on ps2).
I've never played the old PES on ps2 since I went 360.
might have to try sometime. just for the good ol'days ! (I think PES 4 or 5 might have been my favourite game ever. But fifa09 might be the best foot game ever).
I've never played the wii version of PES. the controls seem very weird.

AleXTC, Monday, 2 February 2009 15:32 (seventeen years ago)

With the Wii version you play god, moving all the pieces as opposed to one at a time; it allows you to set up some beautiful runs, feints and create open space to pass to. However, in 08 you initiated the shot but didn't control it; it appears in 09 you do have control over placement and power.

It is a very different scheme, and takes some acclimation. Once accomplished, the level of control of off-ball movement really amplifies the feeling of accomplishment.

EZ Snappin, Monday, 2 February 2009 15:36 (seventeen years ago)

you went from "classic" PES on ps2 to the wii version ?
must be hell to lose the reflex and get used to the new controls !
Most of the times, when I play with someone who's not used to fifa and ask me how to do so and so, I'm quite unable to answer since it's almost all reflexes by now !

AleXTC, Monday, 2 February 2009 15:43 (seventeen years ago)

Yeah, my game dropped precipitously, and I'm not as good with the Wii as with PES5. However, I tried this years FIFA and was absolutely atrocious. I don't know if I want to learn yet another control scheme, and my disappointment/frustration with player spacing and off-ball movement just about kills it for me. Of course, if I didn't suck I'd probably have a better time.

EZ Snappin, Monday, 2 February 2009 15:46 (seventeen years ago)

i'd favour going back to an earlier version for precisely those reasons, but that feels kinda lazy.

Redknapp out (darraghmac), Monday, 2 February 2009 15:53 (seventeen years ago)

yeah, going from PES' controls and gameplay to fifa's was pretty hard.
more generally, I have this problem with new games because I'm too lazy to learn all the controls...
sad, eh ?

AleXTC, Monday, 2 February 2009 16:00 (seventeen years ago)

main reason people fell into the FIFA vs PES argument would have been the 'can't be bothered to learn both' i'd say.

Redknapp out (darraghmac), Monday, 2 February 2009 16:19 (seventeen years ago)

well, also you don't need to have the latest version of each at the same time. I don't think anybody plays both during the same period.
So, yeah, basically, you just play one and, in general, for these controls/gameplays habits reasons, people just pick the latest version of the one they already know.
now that I can play both, each year I just try to find out which one is the best and go with it till the following one.

AleXTC, Monday, 2 February 2009 16:25 (seventeen years ago)

The thing about the upcoming wii one that has me a bit worried is they've said it's going to have multiple control schemes, also allowing for the use of the classic controller (with traditional pro evo controls). It seems to me that is going to be hard to balance and could mess up the game. I do like the idea of what they tried last year, but feel like it wasn't quite there - in terms of control, there just wasn't enough where you actually felt like you were in control. Passing was so perfect though - so much better, and moving players off the ball was also a very nice addition. Still, it felt like a couple of steps forward and a couple of steps back at the same time?

Jeff LeVine, Monday, 2 February 2009 16:32 (seventeen years ago)

I'm slightly concerned about the multiple controls myself, but if it allows for two player local then cool. Balancing must be addressed, obviously, but head to head I would think pointer control, esp. passing, would trump any classic control system.

My only real issue last year was defense, and from what I've read they've at least tried to address it. Additional shooting controls will be nice, too.

HI DERE CHINA CALL UP!!!111

ken "save-a-finn" c (ken c), Saturday, 11 April 2009 22:05 (seventeen years ago)

after winning the treble two years in a row, being top scorer in europe and winning european best player, league best player, league assist king, world+europe+league best eleven, my talents are finally recognised by the china coach

ken "save-a-finn" c (ken c), Saturday, 11 April 2009 22:06 (seventeen years ago)

got my ireland call up after three full seasons in attacking midfield for man united. i can see why our best players don't fucking bother anymore.

this is a shit awful game on PS2, buggy, no control over player half the time and just plain lazy. still play it more than any other though.

Old Big 'OOS (AKA the Cupwinner) (darraghmac), Sunday, 12 April 2009 01:45 (seventeen years ago)

heh china has NO GOALKEEPER. basically if the opposition has a shot the ball goes in

ken "save-a-finn" c (ken c), Tuesday, 14 April 2009 23:01 (seventeen years ago)

have you managed to find a team that just hoofs it to fuck out of the back yet? when you find that team, stick with them, cos every shower i've been stuck with so far concedes 20+ goals a season with fannydanglin centre backs

Old Big 'OOS (AKA the Cupwinner) (darraghmac), Wednesday, 15 April 2009 01:27 (seventeen years ago)

Is this any good on the wii then? I was never any good at this on the PS2 anyway, despite buying a new one every two years so my flatmate could beat me, but I like the idea of putting my wii-character guy on the pitch.

Hi dere I Love Games, I've entered the 3rd generation or whatever side-generation the wii resides in.

ah this game still manages to hold my attention, for all of its needless flaws. i'm at man city now- moved from chelsea to united to city in 6 months. don't know how they sorted my registration out, but it's a joy to play for city relative to united.

honestly- they would only pass to ronaldo, and he always took a shot. lols for about ten minutes, but after three weeks of it i think i know why berbatov is in a sulk nowadays.

one month passes...

so i got this because i wanted to compare it to fifa09 which i borrowed recently.

is it me or is the ref a bit 'handy' with the cards?

it seems a bit twitchy in changing the controlling player at times, kind've annoying.

pressing Start to skip replays is hugely frustrating, what was wrong with just pressing X?

do the player graphics not get muddy after a while? seems visually rather boring.

in summary, yeah fifa was slightly better. but i'll probaly wait until fifa10 which will use 360 rotation (amazed that these games are still restricted to 8 way-directions)

Ant Attack.. (Ste), Saturday, 6 June 2009 17:56 (sixteen years ago)

is it me or is the ref a bit 'handy' with the cards?

ive only played this on a dozen occasions, but playing it on xbox live with my pal Sav one day he got a red card for a tackle where using the A button gentle tackle he tripped my player, in a non-threatening position and got red carded for it.

languid samuel l. jackson (jim), Sunday, 7 June 2009 02:30 (sixteen years ago)

it seems a bit twitchy in changing the controlling player at times, kind've annoying.

I've found this to be the case with the last few PES (whatever the last one I played on the PS2 was, and the last couple on the 360). It infuriates me so much that I go manual on the player changes. Gets annoying when you pass to someone and it doesn't automatically swap your control to that guy, but at least then I only have myself to blame.

pressing Start to skip replays is hugely frustrating, what was wrong with just pressing X?

This pisses me off; some you can skip with start, others pressing start just brings up the pause menu. Really gets on my tits.

And, yeah, they dish out cars pretty loosely in this on. It's way to strict, particularly for a game with collision detection that is, on occasion, ropey.

That said, haven't played Fifa for years (probably '98 or RTTWC was the last time), so couldn't compare the too. I only really play PES these days when there's a group of us having drinks before heading out.

CraigG, Sunday, 7 June 2009 14:10 (sixteen years ago)

you me both. i haven't even bothered getting this for 360 since it doesn't have a decent d-pad.

sonderangerbot, Sunday, 7 June 2009 21:07 (sixteen years ago)

they brought out a special new xbox pad with an "improved" d-pad. It was virtually the same and still shit.
