Any thoughts on this one? I can't decide. It looks interesting (the destructible environments), but it also looks like maybe just another one of those shooters... and I'm not sure I need to play another shooter right now. Anybody on here picked it up or tried out the demo?

yeah, I don't know what to make of this one; I downloaded the demo, played the SP for 10 minutes and turned it straight off. your little dude seems to glide across the screen... but battlefield is all about the MP innit, bolo... and some of the touches sound nice + I'm a little sick of cod4, so maybe

I've heard the multiplayer is really good but yet to verify this. Czn is right SP was rank rotten, I don't think I even lasted ten minutes.

I might give this a go (didn't know the demo was out, I'll have to grab it), but I think I'm more interested in Battlefield Heroes.
― JimD, Wednesday, 25 June 2008 19:52 (seventeen years ago)
The SP wasn't bad, really... just kinda "meh," gameplay-wise. Although I have to admit I really dug the "attitude" the game had, the music was fucking ace, etc.
― Will M., Thursday, 26 June 2008 14:22 (seventeen years ago)
So I picked this up last night (360 version) and have put in a few hours split between single and multiplayer & so far it feels really solid - I'm enjoying it. The game has a weight... the guns are just really powerful as are the explosions / destructibility. It moves a little slower than Call of Duty 4, but is similar. I kind of like the non-repetitive way they set up the single player - kind of like Bioshock, when you die you don't lose your progress - so it's much easier to keep moving forward.
I really like the graphics and enviornments, which at least feel really large.
Multiplayer is fun, but it seems like the defending team is winning every game. Also for a multiplayer heavy game - that right now there is only one mode for multiplayer seems a little weird. Apparently they're going to patch in a second mode at some point?. Nonetheless, I see myself playing a lot of this, even if I doubt I will rack up Call of Duty like hours upon hours. Also games have been completely lag free so far.

in regards to Battlefield 1943... I do feel like it might be nice to have a solid multiplayer fps stuck on the hard-drive, but I also feel like, I'm not sure I need another multiplayer fps right now, plus I've never been completely sold on Battlefield. There were things I liked about Bad Company, but not enough to stop me from trading it in when I needed some cash. $15 also feels kind of expensive for 3 maps. Just too many other games right now anyhow (and I'm still happy playing the constantly updated TF2 and would like to play more L4D).

― Jeff LeVine, Friday, 20 November 2009 03:47 (sixteen years ago)
Somehow I forgot how different Battlefield is from Call of Duty. Game feels great. I love the variety of vehicles and weapons and giant open gameplay. There's much more of a team feel now too - not as complicated as Team Fortress, but the different classes really make a difference. I only played one long attacking match so far (which we won), but I really appreciated the different, sometimes slower feel.
Graphics weren't as sharp as I thought they would be - seemed like a step back from the first Bad Company to the downloadable BF1943 style, but maybe that's just beta graphics - still over four months till the game comes out, maybe it's the ps3(?).
Definitely prefer the modern feel, rather than WWII. I wonder how many maps the final game will ship with...
― Jeff LeVine, Friday, 20 November 2009 05:29 (sixteen years ago)
... update?
― SKATAAAAAAAAAAA (cozwn), Saturday, 5 December 2009 22:04 (sixteen years ago)
I don't have much to add as I haven't played it much more. The graphics aren't as bad as my above post implies - they're definitely at least on the level of 1943, which is fine. Right now there are four classes (medic, assault, engineer and recon (sniper)) with a ranking system right of out Call of Duty, which lets you unlock weapons and gadgets as you rank up. Each class has three or four different guns and stuff they can get, it seems like.
I think it seems like a very solid multiplayer offering, but I have some problems... the first and most major of which would be an overcrowded marketplace - too many first person shooters to choose from - not enough time to play & get good at them all.
The gametype in the demo, capture / defend two point in an area then move on to the next area of the map... leads to some very long matches... too long, especially when things are going bad. The long matches make me feel like I should be playing the game on a PC. The other problem with match length, is that it feels too samey, moving to a new area to do try do do the same thing you just did, capture or defend two points five time in a row offers little variety of experience across a match that takes so long. I know the final game is going to ship with other modes too, so maybe that's only a real problem with the demo, but I'm not too fond of this mode (which is basically a re-tooling of the gold capture from the first Bad Company). Killzone 2, for example, has matches of similar lengths on some large maps, but it gives you five different modes to play across the course of the match - that variety frees things up and makes the game more fun & less repetitive.
Finally, the included demo map is too sniper friendly. I mean, I'm a horrible sniper in every game I've ever tried it, and here I got 30+ kills (or something) in my first try. The size of the maps, the lack of ability to flank and the paths people have to take to get to an objective make sniper a god class (or at least so it seems to me). Wait ten seconds to spawn, run for one minute to get to the action, get shot by a sniper a half mile away & repeat...
― Jeff LeVine, Sunday, 6 December 2009 16:43 (sixteen years ago)
sorry meant to come back on this - thx for the impressions. I'm definitely stoked to play this after sinking some time into the original. esp. excited to have an antidote to the ping pongy individualism of MW2's mp, which I do love of course but it can be quite a lonely game ;_;
― SKATAAAAAAAAAAA (cozwn), Wednesday, 9 December 2009 17:13 (sixteen years ago)
I think the key will be how many maps they include with the retail release. I felt like the first game got old quick because there were just a handful of very similar feeling maps (and only one game type).
― Jeff LeVine, Wednesday, 9 December 2009 18:02 (sixteen years ago)
yeah, I've not been following the development but I'd def be interested to hear how many maps and gametypes will ship w/this one
I hope they def have more than two gametypes this time; not that I don't really like gold rush mode
― SKATAAAAAAAAAAA (cozwn), Wednesday, 9 December 2009 18:06 (sixteen years ago)
I guess my other question mark about the game, is that at least with the demo it kind of felt like just more of the same. I was in the M.A.G. beta at the same time and while that felt similar to Battlefield (big team battle across a big map), it felt different enough (for instance, three factions instead of just two & multiple objective types), that at least from the beta impressions, it seemed more compelling & had a slightly more unique & original kind of feeling. If I do end up getting M.A.G., I'm not sure I'd want to pick up a similar game but with a reduced feeling just a month or two later.
Early 2010 is fucking crowded!

^ pretty much exactly what I was asking for two days ago.
― Jeff LeVine, Friday, 18 December 2009 19:25 (sixteen years ago)
that looks alright but srsly the whole squad system was the worst thing about BF:BC; it's cool to stick together in squads and the ability to spawn off your squad mates is useful but only being only to talk to your squad and not being able to enter games with more than 3 of your friends is seriously limiting
― cozwn, Friday, 18 December 2009 19:41 (sixteen years ago)
I agree that squad talk is dumb when the teams are so small (9 player max?). It might have made sense on PC with 32 player teams. That said, I never mike up anyway (and have yet to have more than a couple other friends on at the same time), so for me it doesn't make much difference.
― Jeff LeVine, Friday, 18 December 2009 20:39 (sixteen years ago)
"DICE is adding a hardcore mode to increase the realism. Here there will be no kill cam after deaths, no HUD to speak of, and the amount of damage you can take will be decreased dramatically."
― cozwn, Friday, 18 December 2009 23:09 (sixteen years ago)
I'm glad I've come back around to this game. It's a lot more fun than I remembered & I'm really enjoying the unique feel. Adding in the new Conquest mode helps a ton & the four new maps (all free) make it feel like a much more complete multiplayer experience than when it launched. People seem to still be playing it too... at least today I had no problem getting in a bunch of full games. I really like the graphics as well - the look is so solid. I'm loving how the different classes, foot travel, boats, tanks, jeeps, helicopters and even golf carts keep things feeling fresh. Definitely hoping to spend more time with this one (at least until 2 comes out). It's a really good bargain now too, at only $20 US new.

The number one ranked player in this game (on 360) has 232,137 kills as of this evening! Beyond crazy. At least for me, kills are hard to come by in Bad Company. I just had a match where I felt like I did pretty good, like maybe I was getting the hang of things, but at the end my results read, ten kills to fourteen deaths (good enough for the third best score on my team as I captured some points too). Since I've come back to the game, I do feel like I'm doing better, having many more matches closer to even, but I've got a lot of ground to make up... overall I've died about twice as many times as I've killed... uhg.
It's weird that the leaderboards cut off at 500,000. I've still gotta get about 400 kills just to get on that thing :(
Cozwn - did you have a favorite class to play?
― Jeff LeVine, Tuesday, 22 December 2009 06:01 (sixteen years ago)
iirc my favourites switched often betw. - the assault w/the M16 - the grenade launcher was really satisfying on that and it was great to be able to self-heal; - support w/the lmg that has a red dot site - again it's good to be able to heal and assist others w/health and also heal vehicles; mortar strike is too good- sniper w/the silenced automatic rifle;- and the demolition class with the PP2000 shotgun - great to be able to C4 the crate unnoticed and the PP2000 is lethal but it's a bummer not being able to self-heal so you have to be pretty good to play this class
tbh all of the classes are fun in different ways and each has something to recommend them
one of the things that did bother me about this game: so much hell from above; it's like a prototype for MW2 inasmuchas there are always explosions going off and massives pitched battles between tanks and infantry and helicopters blowing shit up, it can be overwhelming, especially because the sound-design is so good and really accentuates the mayhem
― thurman merman (cozwn), Wednesday, 23 December 2009 00:52 (sixteen years ago)
Yeah, I've been lucky enough to be gunner in a few choppers with good pilots and that's some crazy fun, but unfair as hell for dudes running along the ground if you spot 'em. It's a lot harder to use those things though than say the chopper gunner in MW2, since there's a lot more to deal with. Is there a class that carries a good anti air-weapon? I did shoot my first chopper down tonight using one of those ground anti-air emplacement guns (I don't know what they're called). The game feels really deep - I still have A LOT to learn. I've just unlocked the recon's marking thing which you can blow up tanks and shit with, I guess - I'm looking forward to trying that out later. The unlock system does bug me a bit - some of the weapons you start with, while maybe as powerful as stuff you get later, seem a lot harder to use. I'm just really in love with that large battlefield feeling, it just feels so much more open and free and filled with a lot more possibilies than what I was getting from my CoD MW2 marathons. It does feel even worse though when you end up on a crappy team that can't seem to get anything done.
I guess the new game is going to have a kill cam? I don't remember it from the beta, but I think that will help get rid of the helpless feeling you have sometimes after dying and not even having a clue what the hell just happened.
― Jeff LeVine, Wednesday, 23 December 2009 03:20 (sixteen years ago)
The dog tag system is really funny (just discovered it tonight).
Calling in a missle on tanks is hard! First it's hard to get a lock, cause those guys keep moving, then I haven't quite figured out how to control the missle and it's already crashing harmlessly into the ground.
― Jeff LeVine, Wednesday, 23 December 2009 06:37 (sixteen years ago)
yeah that's one of the main problems with helicopters - there is no class with a reliable anti-aircraft weapon - you can use supports' LMGs on them but it's not that effective; best bet is to use the AA guns but any smart helicopter pilot or artillery-user takes them out first and there's not many on each map
the trick to calling in missiles on tanks is...... lock onto empty vehicles! or your own AA guns! or missile emplacements. you can then direct your missile into the tank and they get no warning that it's coming. iirc you control the missile w/inverted controls and use the right trigger for it to accelerate

That's the thing about these more complicated, team based multiplayer games (I've also been checking out the similar MAG this week)... they offer more depth, but you lose that quick pick up and jump in ease and excitement of CoD. The game opens up in a big way and offers a world more of possibilities, but not as much instant gratification, maybe? Or maybe I'm just shootered out...

even with the spotting system (which I'm conflicted about, at least in BC1 there was a risk reward mechanic to spotting ie you had to fire your gun whereas here you can just mash back/select along the tree line and light fools up, though no one seems to do so), the slightly sluggish controls, the weird bullet hit marking and wonky geometry collision detection, this game is still disgustingly good

I know with the first game I started enjoying it more once I started unlocking some of the different weapons and stuff - the default load outs don't feel the best & playing a little more of this demo tonight, I get the same idea here. But yeah, like the first one, playing this kinda gives me a vague feeling - I don't completely connect as much as I would like to. It would certainly be better with a real group, but for me that's not going to happen & I also think it would probably be better on PC than on console / just because of the way communication actually usually works in a team based game on PC (in my experience).
I'm a little shootered out & with so many other games coming out in the next couple of months to choose from, I think I've decided to pass on this one for now too.

the ps3, not the pad obvs
Hate to get into a console war discussion, but the 360 pad is so far superior to to the ps3 dualshock when playing a fps it's not even funny. 1. There's too much dead-zone on the ps3 sticks and they just feel looser 2. The shooting on the 360 trigger feels much nicer compared to using the R1 button (at least with my hands, they naturally rest on the triggers, while using the dualshock, I gotta kinda hold my index finger in a less natural position to rest it on R1 - this problem could be mitigated I guess if one were to buy the trigger add ons for the dualshock). The only thing the ps3 controller has going for it is the d-pad, but it seems like hardly any games even use the d-pad anymore. Buttons are even.

Jeff - totally agree. As much as i adore the ps controller for most things I have to admit the xbox controller seems much more suited for fps gaming.

I've played one game of conquest, which was fine. one game of hardcore conquest, which was just a horrible snipe fest. and 6 hours of rush (shut up I had no work today). when you get a good squad together this game just sings. the smoke grenade attachment can really change the flow of a game too

I gave in and picked this up yesterday (360 version). And yeah - it's frustrating this isn't working yet. You'd think by now they would be able to launch a game - it's not like this is the first time. I did finally get to play about two hours yesterday then jumped into a game this morning to find the stuff I'd unlocked had all been reset & I was back to rank 1 - kind of annoying, but more annoying was after getting into a game again and playing for about ten minutes, the servers crash again & two and a half hours later they're still down. Not exactly the best first impression...
Also I'm TERRIBLE at this game so far & feel like the unlock system is stupid - really gives the people of higher ranks much too much of an advantage - kinda reminds me of Killzone 2 that.

you need to squad up broseph. that way you can spawn off your squad mates, near the action.

I've only been playing rush and conquest. trick to squadding up is letting the last guy know to post up if you three are dead so you have that mobile spawn point
played a quick game of squad rush and it seemed good too; a bit intense mind

yeah cozen - I was spotting guys and wondering for a while, how come the little triangle wasn't showing up. I did fine the game I joined mid-session, but on that jungle map I just couldn't get anything going. When it came up as the next map again, I just had to drop. I was worried about joining up, but surprisingly, at least on my end, those matches seemed lag-free.
In regards to snipers, like I commented way back when I first tried the ps3 beta, with the way the maps are designed (so big and with so many different heights), snipers are gonna be kinda god class. It does get to be a problem in rush when you're attacking and two-thirds of your team is sitting back a half mile away in the hills.
Squad deathmatch can be kinda fun, just to get away from the draining objective modes and trying just to focus on being a squad and staying alive. I thought I wouldn't be able to play it for a month 'cause I didn't pre-order, or is that another squad mode? Anyhow, the game could use a couple more different modes. Would love to play some search and destroy in this engine.
Even though sometimes it's annoying that you have to spawn back at the base and run for 45 seconds to get back to the action - it's worth it for those great Battlefield moments at the start of the match as the whole team spawns in and races for tanks, 'copters and ATVs and races away.
I've only played one match on it, but I love the look of Nelson Bay (the night map)...
― Jeff LeVine, Monday, 8 March 2010 01:21 (sixteen years ago)
I think on the snowy map we were successfully holding all three positions and spawn-trapping the opposition so it was a bit easier; as you say, on the jungle map, it's very hard to get a bead on what's going on where in hardcore. I expect it'll reveal its magic once you've exhausted everything core has to offer. it's not like it takes too many bullets to down someone. I agree the netcode is pretty good, there's a slight edge when playing with americans but it's liveable
I don't think snipers are OP or anything, it's just obnoxious when you're playing against 10 snipers or playing with a team who are 10 snipers sitting way out in a bush miles from the objectives
got to agree with some of the grousing about the unlock system: it seems backwards to give bf VETERANS unlocked kit (health/defib, ammo packs) and weapons; surely those should be unlocked for non-vets and vets should have to unlock them. iunno, that doesn't make sense to me. the mid-level guns are better than the original guns too, for most classes, the last guns are not all-powering beasts tho I do have a soft spot for the M16
also level 16s have magnum ammo/body armour which is a big advantage in 1-vs-1s against new players
― ©H0©080ZO (cozen), Monday, 8 March 2010 11:12 (sixteen years ago)
anyway I think the best recon build is SVU w/red-dot, mortar and magnum ammo. turns you into a mid-to-close range one man army, get a dece assault in your squad resupplying your motion sensors and you can have a field day.

― mayor jingleberries, Monday, 8 March 2010 16:56 (sixteen years ago)
Overall, I do like this game, but do feel moment to moment, it's not as compelling an experience as the CoD style game. I do like the variety of playing different classes that are really different, like a medic that can actually heal people or the supply guy tossing out supplies (and earning points for spotting things), but still, it's the rare game where there's any communication and that gives a weird disconnect, like you aren't really on a team. I wish they'd just give up on the squad chat idea and put in team speak as the odds of a more team flavor creeping into the game (and it really needs that teamwork to feel good) would be better. Too often I find the matches kind of drift into these sort of boring lulls. CoD style just has more constant action and more tension that makes it a more exciting game to put time into, I think - more fun...

game is 100 times better in a squad of 4, 100 times better again in a squad of four communicating and 100 times better again in a squad of 4 balanced to the game mode (e.g. for conquest a squad of two medics, a recon with a shotgun/M14, and an assault are an unstoppable force.)

I guess I didn't mean tension in regards to living or dying, but for me it's more of a moment to moment kind of tension that stays constant in CoD, probably because at any second you can and will die, but in Battlefield the times where one feels safer are longer, maybe. That fastness of the CoD play style, even careful hardcore style is faster than most battlefield moments. Don't get me wrong, I like both styles and think Battlefield style also offers a lot - I just think overall I personally prefer CoD for its more arcade-like, fast, hyper-real experience. It's more what I'm looking for out of my playtime. Sort of like how some people prefer to gulp an espresso and others prefer to sip a glass of wine?
The other thing going on here is for whatever reason I just seem to be crap at Battlefield and okay at CoD games.

How do you collect them? (haven't read manual, or any bumf on it either) Just went 12-3 in a game of conquest, which doesn't sound much to you stone cold killers, but it took me a frikkin age to do that in MW2. I like the pace of this more - always feel rushed in mw2 and make terrible decisions, in this I can take a step back and think what I'm doing, like it a lot.
Really laggy last couple of days though on occasion though.

― mayor jingleberries, Thursday, 11 March 2010 17:47 (sixteen years ago)
I bough the PC version a few days ago, and I am so bad at this game that I might actually give up. I was a total punching bag last night - a knifing bag, really. My friend told me it was just a really hardcore server, but I don't know... I log in and it's just total confusion: Can't see anybody, don't know where my teammates are, don't really know what the objective of the map is, and when I do get an enemy in my sites, I can't seem to hit them for shit. I played the hell out of BF 1942 and BF2, but skipped 2142 and all the other in-between stuff. It has been years since I played anything using this engine. I may be too old; reflexes too slow (though I am okay at TF2 which is pretty twitchy, so I dunno...)
Hopefully the game just has a steep learning curve and I'll get it soon.
― richie aprile (rockapads), Thursday, 11 March 2010 17:55 (sixteen years ago)
Playing hardcore sucks because theres no map. You just need to get enough kills to unlock support kits and you can score points without shooting dudes in the face.
― mayor jingleberries, Thursday, 11 March 2010 17:59 (sixteen years ago)
oops, i didn't mean it was a hardcore mode server - just that the dudes on it were "hardcore".
― richie aprile (rockapads), Thursday, 11 March 2010 18:04 (sixteen years ago)
rockapads - I think this game is much less reflex / twitch based than most, more about map awareness and carefulness (I'm no expert in this game, actually pretty bad too so far, though I did have a game yesterday where I got a nice 2.0 k/d ratio & feel like I'm slowly improving). Most of the the guns are best used burst style, so you don't want to hold down the trigger as you'll get too much spread... what you want to do (in general) is fire off in quick bursts to keep your bullets hitting the target (does that make sense?), or go spiner for nice onse shot kills (keep in mind gravity effects your shots in this game too, so the further away you're shooting a guy, the higher you have to aim for a headshot (you don't want to sight on his head, but a bit above)). Use the mini map to locate your teammates. Your squad is blue and the rest of your team is green (or is it the other way around?). The objective of course depends on the mode, but in Rush is marked with an A or B, so shouldn't be too hard to get a hang of. In deathmatch there obviously is no objective. In conquest there are three to five flags, right? All these games take a while to get the hang of - keep in mind, you may be playing against people who have played a lot, maybe even months worth of the game if they were in the beta - so you have to catch up if you're just starting out. Also the game has an unlock system, which gives players who have put in the hours to unlock the better stuff a distinct advantage.
― Jeff LeVine, Thursday, 11 March 2010 18:22 (sixteen years ago)
keep in mind gravity effects your shots in this game
!!! impressed!
― goole, Thursday, 11 March 2010 18:27 (sixteen years ago)
rockpads - as you unlock stuff there are other things you can do to earn a good score other than just focusing on killing and not being killed. Playing a medic roll & focusing on healing people or reviving fallen comrades can be fun and challenging and a great way to get points without even having to worry much about shooting. A good medic can really help a squad a ton.
― Jeff LeVine, Thursday, 11 March 2010 18:30 (sixteen years ago)
Thanks for the advice, Jeff. I played as a medic in BF2 and had a blast. It really annoys me that they don't start out with anything. I'll get dudes calling for a medic and I'm just standing there with my huge machine gun unable to help.

I am getting better at this, but I can't decide which class to play. I had a blast as a medic in BF2, but this game is so spread out, I don't feel like it would be as intense as it was in the crowded city maps in that game. I am actually finding myself switching between engineer and assault.
― richie aprile (rockapads), Sunday, 14 March 2010 02:12 (sixteen years ago)
I was finally able to connect to the EA servers again tonight and got in a couple of matches. I'm coming around and enjoying this game more and getting the hang of it, I think. Went 17/3 in one of the matches! I feel like assault is a good class for me right now - I like spawning on a camping sniper, tossing out some ammo for him and earning some easy points, then moving out to flank / spot / attack.
― Jeff LeVine, Sunday, 14 March 2010 02:26 (sixteen years ago)
weird thing - MW2 I could play drunk, no problem, this? after a couple of beers and a couple of industrial strength caipirinhas - I sucked soooooo hard, couldn't get a decent shot away, in fact I think I got most kills from mortar strikes and vehicles (drunk driving into buildings/flag areas).
When not pissed, am really enjoying the usefulness of the pistols in this - decent range and the ww2 one unlocked with the special edition inflicts some good damage.
― problem chimp (Porkpie), Sunday, 14 March 2010 06:56 (sixteen years ago)
yeah that ww2 one is really ridiculous
this game is so complicated it's a bit silly DICE didn't include a tutorial for each of the classes & their kit and the vehicles e.g. only learned yesterday that smoke removes tracer darts from vehicles. and I'm sure a lot of ppl don't know that if you keep still when you hear the beeping, the enemy's motion mines won't detect you

did you know you can take a screenshot by pressing back/select+start at the same time? they will be available at http://badcompany2.ea.com/stats when it's back up
also, no wonder the carl gustav wrecks infantry:
The RPG-7 delivers 450 damage and travels at a speed of "40".A blast radius of 6 meters where only 2 meters are lethal to a soldier at full health.
The Carl Gustav delivers 350 damage and travels at a speed of "75", 1.875x faster than the RPG. It has a larger blast radius of 8 meters and nearly 5 of those meters are lethal to infantry.
The AT4 delivers 525 damage. Initial speed of "25", but from what I can tell, it can reach a max speed of 50 due to its nature as a guided missile. Smallest blast radius of only 3 meters. Lethal radius to infantry is half a meter.

― mayor jingleberries, Tuesday, 16 March 2010 16:41 (sixteen years ago)
Play the new sniper cop class in Bad Company 2
Did you know the tracer dart can stick to friendly targets? It sits there and glows. For instance, if you affix it to someone's head - say, someone with a sniper rifle crouching just behind a ridge or in some foliage - that person's head will be super easy to spot from a long way off by other players with sniper rifles. Furthermore, if you attach it to someone's face, it will shine a red glow into his line of site and maybe even obscure his vision. It's like a fantastic glowing clown nose, or the schnozz of a certain reindeer who saved Christmas. And the beauty of a friendly tracer dart is that there's no way to remove it short of dying.

not getting along w/it jim?
― cozen, Saturday, 20 March 2010 10:58 (sixteen years ago)
i'm really bad at it which precludes my enjoying it. I will persevere.
My badness is three-fold:
1. I just generally don't have any awareness of where i am in the map and where my enemies are likely to come from. I get shot in the back a lot.2. When i do come face to face with an enemy i am just not very good at aiming -especially at range- and I usually die even if I have the jump on someone.3. When I play the way you should, i.e. trying to achieve objectives etc. I do very badly; the only times I've not gotten my ass handed to me I've not really done much more than kill a bunch of guys without helping the team in any other way.
― 404s & Heartbreak (jim in glasgow), Saturday, 20 March 2010 15:53 (sixteen years ago)
no auto-aim in this whatsoever which really exacerbates point 2
― cozen, Saturday, 20 March 2010 16:09 (sixteen years ago)
I'm no expert, but this would be my ideas on your points jim
1. Persevere (as you say) and you will learn the maps (there aren't very many). For the most part though, the maps are pretty open - if you're not really working together as a squad, it's pretty difficult to protect your back.
2. Keep in mind, as you rank up you get better weapons, bullets and armour, so even if you have good aim, if you're at an early rank, you are usually disadvantaged if you come across a higher ranked player. Trying to engage people at some distance and also taking a knee (down on right stick) for increased stability can help. Also marking targets (hitting the back button) can sometimes get a team mate into the fight and increase your odds (and points). Finding the proper weapon to suit your style helps. Experiment.
3. Objective modes are very difficult if you're not on a team really working together. You just can't lone wolf this stuff. But even if your team isn't playing like a team, try to be aware of their positions on the mini map and use their location to you advantage.
― Jeff LeVine, Saturday, 20 March 2010 16:44 (sixteen years ago)
I'm an expert stop being a noob
― cozen, Saturday, 20 March 2010 17:18 (sixteen years ago)
haha
Yeah the no auto-aim is probably a big thing. It's pretty egregious at times in MW2, e.g. aiming through my sites not really paying attention once when a guy ran by me and my crosshair tracked him for about 90 degrees and i just had to pull the trigger.
I spot a lot. That's the one thing I've got right so far in the game.
I have never been in a squad that was working together..
― 404s & Heartbreak (jim in glasgow), Saturday, 20 March 2010 18:21 (sixteen years ago)
i find way more than any other game you really, REALLY gotta control your bursts-- i end up more like rapidly clicking the mouse than really "holding" the trigger.

I have never been in a squad that was working together..― 404s & Heartbreak (jim in glasgow)
― 404s & Heartbreak (jim in glasgow)
This is really the big problem with the game and the reason I've pretty much stopped playing already - that DICE didn't learn anything from BC1 and again released a team based game (where teamwork is essential) with a poorly conceived and executed system for interacting with your team. The fact that you can only communicate with 1/3 of your team is just stupid. A guy on my team, but not in my squad is five feet in front of me and I can't tell him to hold up as I'm about to drop a health pack for him? Or you're behind a tank trying to get in position to repair it, but you can't communicate with the driver to tell him to hold it for repairs because he isn't on your squad and he drives over you? The few times I've played on a decent squad, we just roll too, but even that is unsatisfying, because you know you're just rolling over non-communicating, non-working together squads, so it's hardly a fair fight, and hardly a challenge.

I've so not been able to give this the attention it deserves, been way too busy. Hence when I do play I tend to have half an hour here and there so I end up lone wolf, camping snipering it up. Still doing OK though, tend to do it in a helpful way - spotting plenty and chucking the motion sensors. Have found a couple of nice sniping corridors too that always seem to have players barrelling blindly down - especially on the last stand on the desert/harbour one, there's a spot that gives you a great view of A, and also the route from the opposition spawn point into the fun.

― mayor jingleberries, Thursday, 25 March 2010 07:15 (sixteen years ago)
Gee - I don't think it's that interesting - CoD MW2 is about five months old - it's very typical... people always drift away as either new games come out or they have their fill. I'm sure if you compared it to previous CoD games or Halo 3 you would see about the same general trend and rate of decline. If anything, it's very impressive how many people are still playing the game this far down the line (on average I see around 400,000 people online at a time these days).

― cozen, Sunday, 28 March 2010 12:39 (sixteen years ago)
I've picked the M60 up from other people but in the short time I've had it, didn't really notice it being OP. The final medic unlock seems better to me both in feel and stat-wise. What am I missing? The guns I hate the most are those fast firing sniper rifles. Well, I just hate snipers in general... in pretty much all video games. But those guns seem OP to me. I think it's the second to last unlock for them.
― richie aprile (rockapads), Sunday, 28 March 2010 16:27 (sixteen years ago)
http://i.imgur.com/C50iK.png
M60 is 4 shots to kill at any range (3 shots w/magnum ammo at close range), compared w/6 shots for any other medic gun. it's also really steady and can be used really effectively to counter-snipe. iunno, compared to any other gun available to the medic (except the G3, which is limited by its 20 bullet clip) it seems over powered
― cozen, Sunday, 28 March 2010 16:53 (sixteen years ago)
still playing far too infrequently, so still lone-wolfing with a sniper, but getting just as many kills with the 1911 pistol, it's bloody great. Favourite trick is hanging back, spotting and sniping, but also taking out those guys who think they're being so clever flanking the spawn site, had one bloke 4 times in reasonably quick succession earlier, wading up under the piers, same way every time. Can't understand why no-one else seems to be watching that flank, but hey, is all good.

people are ridiculous bandwagonning whores to a man
M60 has almost two times the kills of the highest assault rifle and the 1911 has almost three times the kills of the next best pistol (the rex). I can't believe the 1911 has more kills than the grenade, the M95 and the gustav

tanks die too easily in this game. the idea that throwing some C4 on the back of a tank is going to instantly destroy it seems wrong to me. I'd rather see disabling a tank's treads as something anyone with grenades or explosives could do.
also: nerf the 40mm grenades already. I'm not even sure how.. maybe by increasing splash damage? the thing I hate about them is the short range kills. Ditto for Carl Gustov.

When I realized my PC could run this as well as an xbox, I decided to double dip and pick it up on PC - also because I always felt it would be better playing a game like this on PC - and for me it is. There's something about keyboard and mouse controls and really sitting up on your monitor paying attention (though I seriously need a bigger monitor as some of the further away targets are too small on my monitor to aim accurately onto) that feels right when playing a first person shooter. Somehow I'd forgotten this. Also these maps feel better with 32 players on 'em for the most part. I also appreciate the easy of using the server browser. Anybody else on here from North America got the PC version too and wanna squad up? My tag is jefflev13
Gotta say though, going back to being level 1 really sucks, especially playing against people who've been grinding up for the last month and a half. Currently my k/d ratio is less than half what it was on 360 and my k/d ratio on 360 was terrible. I still do have some serious complaints about the game, beyond its completely fucked up leveling system that makes it impossible to compete until you've put about twenty or more hours into the game. Mainly, the amount of people using the one hit kill weapons, the grenade launcher and carl gustav is even more prevalent than people using the noob tube in MW2 and has become even more annoying - I would guess those two weapons have accounted for 50% of my deaths since switching to PC, and I don't know - it's really fucking aggravating. I guess because there doesn't seem to be much skill involved with using either and they will beat out any early level load out 100% of the time. In fact, the only way to compete against those guys is to follow the same route and frankly I don't want to - I wanna use regular old guns (is that so wrong?).
Also the game could definitely use some more maps - honestly I wouldn't mind paying for them. Fuck, just port over the good Bad Company 1 maps or some of the smaller Battlefield 2 maps.

apparently because the damage model is difft on PC (requires more bullets to skill) 40mm and CG spam is even worse

Very happy to read "Reduced the lethal blast range of the 40mm grenade and M2CG to highlight their role as a secondary weapon against infantry." Should be interesting to see how all this stuff changes the game.
― Jeff LeVine, Wednesday, 21 April 2010 18:24 (sixteen years ago)
yeah, it'll be interesting to see how that plays out
not played for about 3 weeks, jumped on earlier for a few games and think I was only killed by the M60, M16 and 40mm
― ˁ˚ᴥ˚ˀ (cozen), Wednesday, 21 April 2010 19:18 (sixteen years ago)
It's very cool that they're trying to fix and re-balance the game (at least on PC), but such a big changelist just goes to show you how broken the game has been so far. After such a long beta period, you'd think more of this stuff would have been caught the first time around. I definitely appreciate the support though - it's a shame Infinity Ward wasn't able to or didn't want to comb over MW2 to the same extent, as that game has probably needed it at least as much as BC2.
― Jeff LeVine, Wednesday, 21 April 2010 20:19 (sixteen years ago)
played a bit earlier, and I'm really clueless as to how the scoring works - did a full round, got a fair few kills (yes yes, camping sniper) but..... I recorded something daft like 5 kills, 3 deaths..... vbarely any points, but then I had the pistol kills pin (4 kills?) and my killingest weapon was the gol with 10 kills or so - how does that work out?
― problem chimp (Porkpie), Wednesday, 21 April 2010 20:21 (sixteen years ago)
killingest weapon is tracked for all of your games on tht server not just the last game

if you haven't played BC2 b4, just keep in mind - the game is absolutely brutal for the first 10-15 hours while you build up stats to unlock better weapons and armour, but at a certain point it's worth it and becomes one of the great multiplayer games.
― Jeff LeVine, Saturday, 24 July 2010 20:06 (fifteen years ago)
I'm close to having all the parts for my new PC assembled. I'll be playing this again in 2-3 weeks. Out of all the games I miss, this one is what I miss the most.
― richie aprile (rockapads), Saturday, 24 July 2010 21:18 (fifteen years ago)
I havent played much since they tweaked the settings. Do people still use all the same goddamn guns all the time?
― mayor jingleberries, Saturday, 24 July 2010 22:41 (fifteen years ago)
I actually found the first 10 levels way easier for some reason.

been practising on battlefield 2, goddam the weapon reload is brutally slow.
― F-Unit (Ste), Monday, 26 July 2010 12:43 (fifteen years ago)
there should be an option to reload quicker - but suffer a possible weapon jam, in these games.
― F-Unit (Ste), Monday, 26 July 2010 12:45 (fifteen years ago)
finished downloading BC. but is there anyway to play the multiplayer mode in single player, like in BF2?
so far the single player mode is this laaame on rails tripe. or is this just introducing me to the game?
― F-Unit (Ste), Tuesday, 27 July 2010 12:25 (fifteen years ago)
Ste - single player is horrible, just forget about it. The game is about multiplayer & there is no version with bots - you just gotta jump in there and take your lumps.
― Jeff LeVine, Tuesday, 27 July 2010 14:25 (fifteen years ago)
shame, wanted practice before being abused by internet folk
okay, will have to dive in!
― F-Unit (Ste), Tuesday, 27 July 2010 14:27 (fifteen years ago)
so i dove in...
and quite predictably got my ass chewed.
maps seem a bit smaller and more compact than b2 which is a shame because i like it a bit more open, i was a huge delta force fan which was my first ever multiplayer experience.
― F-Unit (Ste), Wednesday, 28 July 2010 08:17 (fifteen years ago)
i'm pretty wank at this, but sticking with it for novelty value.
quick questionswhat's squadding up all about?what's spotting all about?
― F-Unit (Ste), Wednesday, 11 August 2010 14:32 (fifteen years ago)
The squad thing... it's their system, when you push to talk, only your squad can hear you not your whole team (there's no way in-game for your whole team to hear you, but some servers have seperate teamspeak servers to get around this). Kind of stupid, IMO. Becasue of this system it seems like nobody used voice chat, when this is a game where it would be extremely useful if people did. The good thing about the squad system though is how you can spawn on your squad, which can get you right back into the action (instead of having to trek up from your base). You can also switch squads while dead, so you can spawn into a more favorable position, perhaps.
Spotting is great, as it makes it so everybody on your team now sees enemies with an orange triangle above their head and also on the mini-map. If you spot a guy and somebody else on your team kills them, you get points for spotting. It's extremely useful.
― Jeff LeVine, Wednesday, 11 August 2010 15:21 (fifteen years ago)
I would spot the shit out of everything I saw but nobody else does it, in my experience
― mayor jingleberries, Wednesday, 11 August 2010 18:44 (fifteen years ago)
haha i'm entirely addicted to spotting. To the point that when an enemy suddenly appears in front of me, I'll end up pressing Spot instead of Fire.
getting better slowly, managed my highest points in a game last night with lots of recon action. i normally engineer out, because i like to be helpful with the tank fixing and stuff. but i came upon a map i hadn't seen before, it was attack/defend in lots of jungle. so sniper seemed a good option.
― F-Unit (Ste), Thursday, 26 August 2010 10:00 (fifteen years ago)
i guess i'm the only ilxor who plays this? i'm still only on rank 9
it's driving me batshit lately, getting stuffed sometimes and weapons feel like they're useless (it gives me gun upgrades to shitter guns, why?!)but then on occasion i can find a decent server with people who aren't all level 50 and things feel better.
it's addictive tho.
― F-Unit (Ste), Tuesday, 14 September 2010 10:36 (fifteen years ago)
I still play now and then, but in general, haven't been in much of a shooting mood the last few months at least. I think I just hit level 19 the other weekend though.
― Jeff LeVine, Tuesday, 14 September 2010 16:43 (fifteen years ago)
I am really hot and cold with this game. haven't played in a few weeks now, due to being busy with Worms Armageddon, and also a really bad stretch of experiences involving really lame tactics and/or suspected cheaters.
― get off my lawn (rockapads), Thursday, 16 September 2010 05:30 (fifteen years ago)
Looks like the vietnam expansion is going to be dlc only. Not very excited about it.
What did pique my interest a bit was the fact that DICE is doing Medal of Honor's multiplayer. That and the single player campaign videos gives me slight hope that MOH is actually decent.
― mayor jingleberries, Thursday, 16 September 2010 16:45 (fifteen years ago)
Everybody who was in the MoH multiplayer beta said it was HORRIBLE.
― Jeff LeVine, Thursday, 16 September 2010 16:48 (fifteen years ago)
hah ok then there goes hope. cross another game off the to-do list.
― mayor jingleberries, Thursday, 16 September 2010 16:56 (fifteen years ago)
anticipating the vietnam pack, pre ordered already.
still really like this game, and they've just released some new maps (which i believe are from previus versions). Heavy Metal map is fucking HUGE.
― F-Unit (Ste), Monday, 6 December 2010 12:54 (fifteen years ago)
okay the vietnam pack is so so, maps are dull and weapons don't feel much different except the flame thrower which is useless for the most of time but much fun at close quarters.
and the servers fucked up yesterday leaving everyone on rank 0 with crap weapons.
― F-Unit (Ste), Monday, 20 December 2010 13:54 (fifteen years ago)
I don't know - I had a good time with it, even though I was on the fence about picking it up, as I'm suffering shooter fatigue - played maybe three or four hours over the weekend, split between conquest and rush. I think I like it better than vanilla BC2. Kind of feels like the middle ground between BC and the XBLA/PSN version of 1943. I like the era, the historic feeling, the slightly more cartoony look. Game also now seems to perform better on my PC - a very smooth 60FPS on high, 1080p.
― Jeff LeVine, Monday, 20 December 2010 17:49 (fifteen years ago)
yeah it's still good to play, i was expecting more though - i'm not sure what exactly as i think it does what it says on the tin tbf. (and i really do have fun with that flame thrower)
There's one rush map that's just pure ridiculous, where the attackers walk through a stretch of river but just get hammered to fuck by enemy nades.
