feel like tho the next big thing efficiency/stats dudes are gonna have to come to terms with is that some players tendency to bonk in the playoffs isnt just small sample size but related to style of play and ability to adjust, ie viewing the playoffs tactically as a series of moves and counters rather than like a flat plane upon which you do stats

Griffin is tossing up one of the great passing seasons of all time for a big man. He has assisted on 25.5 percent of the Clippers’ baskets while on the floor; only four players 6-foot-10 or taller have posted better assist rates over a full season: Kevin Garnett, Toni Kukoc, Vlade Divac, and Joakim Noah.

― micah, Wednesday, 11 February 2015 23:10 (ten years ago)
harden is having a better season this year so far than manu ever had... prob, but thats the first time thats happened so im not read to crown him yet
the thing abt harden is tho he has been straight up awful in the playoffs, this is imo a problem w his style of play, ball dominant players dont really cut it anymore against good prepared teams, you see the same thing with westbrook, ie everyone knows how important ball movement is now, stupid habits that he can get away with because of his insane skill in the regular season like dribbling out the clock then taking a stepback three become pretty dubious in the postseason
which is not to say he cant figure all that out, just that he hasnt yet

well he was pretty good in the playoffs for OKC, he basically singlehandedly won them several games during their finals run

― J0rdan S., Thursday, 9 April 2015 21:35 (ten years ago)
the celtics have beaten like 2 good teams in the entirety of their isiah thomas led resurgence, the east is just very very bad
― J0rdan S., Thursday, 9 April 2015 21:36 (ten years ago)
that's not a good enough excuse tho for panic trading him for spare parts xp
― k3vin k., Thursday, 9 April 2015 21:37 (ten years ago)
also you can't have two starting guards who are like 6 feet tall
― J0rdan S., Thursday, 9 April 2015 21:37 (ten years ago)
hearing that teammates really liked him here in PHX
― #wegonnabechampionship (Spottie), Thursday, 9 April 2015 21:38 (ten years ago)
they coulda still brought him off the bench
― #wegonnabechampionship (Spottie), Thursday, 9 April 2015 21:39 (ten years ago)
it seems to me like they basically signed him because the price was extremely low and he just didn't fit culturally or with the team
― J0rdan S., Thursday, 9 April 2015 21:39 (ten years ago)
given what he got in free agency it just doesn't seem like the league values him very highly
― J0rdan S., Thursday, 9 April 2015 21:42 (ten years ago)
wrt to what they got in the trade
it was a good move for the celtics, i don't think the fate of the suns hinges much on it though
the league values him incorrectly, which is why you don't trade him, and why Ainge is probably the best in the business
― Matt Armstrong, Thursday, 9 April 2015 21:46 (ten years ago)
isaiah is more disciplined than a true chucker to my eye but he's landed in the perfect situation where his teammates were so desperate for a primary scoring option they actually get mad sometimes when he passes.
― call all destroyer, Thursday, 9 April 2015 21:47 (ten years ago)
Thomas didn't fit with their culture because Goran is a whiny dickhead, afaict
― Matt Armstrong, Thursday, 9 April 2015 21:48 (ten years ago)
yeah trading goran and IT was a bit weird but i guess they were done w the three point guard experiment
― lag∞n, Thursday, 9 April 2015 21:51 (ten years ago)
so keep two of them!
― Matt Armstrong, Thursday, 9 April 2015 21:52 (ten years ago)
I guess it just comes down to me not buying the Brandon Knight thing at all
Zeke + Lakers pick>>>>Brandon fucking Knight
their problem was that they had to trade dragic but thomas/bledsoe does not work as a starting backcourt. and it seems like thomas has demonstrated that he can't really come off the bench.
they boxed themselves in by signing him in the first place
― J0rdan S., Thursday, 9 April 2015 21:54 (ten years ago)
Thomas has demonstrated that he's awesome coming off the bench!
― Matt Armstrong, Thursday, 9 April 2015 21:56 (ten years ago)
the whole thing is a good example of how treating sports like economics does not always work out
the thomas signing made sense financially and everyone at the time was like "hey good price! why not?"
well... we saw why not
― J0rdan S., Thursday, 9 April 2015 21:56 (ten years ago)
did we?
― Matt Armstrong, Thursday, 9 April 2015 21:57 (ten years ago)
because it made goran mad?
well it clearly didn't work!
― J0rdan S., Thursday, 9 April 2015 21:58 (ten years ago)
it was a bad calculation on the suns' part, clearly
seeing as how neither thomas nor dragic play on the team anymore
― J0rdan S., Thursday, April 9, 2015 5:54 PM (1 minute ago)
no!
after the goran trade their playoff push for the season was done. if the celtics deal was all they could have gotten for him on short notice, they should have just waited!
― k3vin k., Thursday, 9 April 2015 21:59 (ten years ago)
you're assuming an alternate reality where the suns showcase isaiah thomas for the sole purpose of his trade value
― J0rdan S., Thursday, 9 April 2015 22:02 (ten years ago)
I think a bad calculation would be to cater all of their free agency moves around Goran's ego
― Matt Armstrong, Thursday, 9 April 2015 22:03 (ten years ago)
J0rdan S.Posted: April 9, 2015 at 5:54:39 PMtheir problem was that they had to trade dragic but thomas/bledsoe does not work as a starting backcourt. and it seems like thomas has demonstrated that he can't really come off the bench.
celtics bring him off the bench
― lag∞n, Thursday, 9 April 2015 22:03 (ten years ago)
Thomas didn't hurt them on the court, if he made other players (one player) sad then that's something we can't really quantify and imo shouldn't care about
― Matt Armstrong, Thursday, 9 April 2015 22:04 (ten years ago)
― J0rdan S., Thursday, April 9, 2015 6:02 PM (3 minutes ago)
no, they "showcase" him because he's now the second best guard on the roster and they aren't making the playoffs anyway. this isn't rocket science
i mean look at the result of the deal they made. you're happy if you're the suns now?
― k3vin k., Thursday, 9 April 2015 22:08 (ten years ago)
well no one thinks the suns got fair value for thomas -- including, i would imagine, the suns. they traded dragic first, so if the theory is that he made only dragic mad then one would expect that they would have kept thomas, because the problem of those two guys coexisting would have been solved.
but that didn't happen. so what was it?
― J0rdan S., Thursday, 9 April 2015 22:08 (ten years ago)
a bad trade?
― Matt Armstrong, Thursday, 9 April 2015 22:10 (ten years ago)
I mean shit if you just want to dump Zeke don't throw in the fucking Lakers pick
jordan you sound like harden trade defenders right now
― k3vin k., Thursday, 9 April 2015 22:11 (ten years ago)
i'm not defending the trade.
i'm just trying to understand it, and perhaps explain it, from the suns' perspective.
― J0rdan S., Thursday, 9 April 2015 22:12 (ten years ago)
well their gm came out publicly and called both dragic and thomas selfish so someone in phx beyond dragic didn't like him
― call all destroyer, Thursday, 9 April 2015 22:14 (ten years ago)
that said their entire chemistry was fucked this year, in watching thomas in boston i don't find him to be any more selfish than he's supposed to be in his role
it seems like, at least in this stage of his career, isaiah thomas works in a certain situation, which is "you're the only good offensive player on the team". the suns, who have at least two competent offensive players, didn't have that situation. should they have altered their team to fit around isaiah thomas? maybe. i would argue not.
the trade was bad but they shouldn't have signed him in the first place
― J0rdan S., Thursday, 9 April 2015 22:15 (ten years ago)
kevin is presenting an alternate reality where isaiah thomas plays like he has in boston, but in phoenix, and his trade value is higher than it was now
i don't think that actually would have been possible, partly because the celtics can appear to be good while not actually being good
― J0rdan S., Thursday, 9 April 2015 22:18 (ten years ago)
i disagree w/"only good offensive player" as the one situation, he should have been able to come off the bench and be the primary focus of the second-unit offense without people getting pissed off
― call all destroyer, Thursday, 9 April 2015 22:18 (ten years ago)
ya microwave/sometime closer is the perfect role for him
― lag∞n, Thursday, 9 April 2015 22:20 (ten years ago)
maybe the suns just h8d him idk they def got hosed tho
it's not like his phx numbers were bad, his shooting percentages were actually better than in boston but he's shooting a little more now and getting to the line a little more
― call all destroyer, Thursday, 9 April 2015 22:21 (ten years ago)
they were dumping a player because they didn't like him, teams who do that rarely (never) are on the good end of the deal
― J0rdan S., Thursday, 9 April 2015 22:21 (ten years ago)
except, like, trent richardson
feel like they shdve given it a chance to work sans goran

you should not have to include something like the lakers pick to get rid of a guy who makes 7m a year. They were desperate to get Brandon Knight for whatever reason.
What's bizarre about it all is they still have a small backcourt!
― Matt Armstrong, Thursday, 9 April 2015 22:24 (ten years ago)
afaik McDonough didn't call Thomas selfish btw
― Matt Armstrong, Thursday, 9 April 2015 22:25 (ten years ago)
did they not give up the lakers pick to get brandon knight?
― J0rdan S., Thursday, 9 April 2015 22:26 (ten years ago)
i mean they sort of made all the moves in concert from a planning perspective but strictly speaking the thomas deal was outside of the one involving the lakers pick?
this is vague but certainly could be directed at both goran and isaiah:
“If a player makes a mistake because he’s being too aggressive on the court and playing hard, that’s fine, we can live with that,” he said. “If players don’t play as well or make mistakes because they’re being a little more selfish and not as concerned about the team success, then that’s something we have a hard time with. I think the message was pretty simple. Anybody that buys into our culture, does what it takes to win and sacrifices for the team, will be here, hopefully for a long time. The guys that are more worried about other things and their top priority is not winning basketball games, then we’ll get rid of them. We have no problem doing that.

― call all destroyer, Thursday, 9 April 2015 22:28 (ten years ago)
I mean maybe he was also talking about thomas but he pretty specifically slammed Goran and said he was persona non grata after the trade demand.
― Matt Armstrong, Thursday, 9 April 2015 22:31 (ten years ago)
yeah jord you're right, I thought the Celtics were directly in the deal.
from that perspective, using 7m of cap room in one offseason to get a first rounder is nbd.
but from the broader perspective Thomas+great first rounder for Knight and lame first rounder is bad.
― Matt Armstrong, Thursday, 9 April 2015 22:32 (ten years ago)
i don't think i caught they gave up the lakers #1 for knight, that's indefensible
― Clay, Thursday, 9 April 2015 22:33 (ten years ago)
I remember when the deal happened a lot of people were like "Clearly the Suns have calculated that they won't get the Lakers pick this year and that they'll be improved next season" and I was like uhhhh I'm not sure this is a safe bet
― Matt Armstrong, Thursday, 9 April 2015 22:33 (ten years ago)
the suns decision to blow their team to smithereens and build around brandon knight is highly suspect i agree
― J0rdan S., Thursday, 9 April 2015 22:34 (ten years ago)
im pretty sure mcdonough gave an interview to zach lowe where he was like "we couldn't pass up the opportunity to get brandon knight"
pick was top 5 protected in 2015, top 3 in 2016 and 2017, unprotected 2018. that is an insanely good asset to use on brandon knight.
― Clay, Thursday, 9 April 2015 22:35 (ten years ago)
it's going to get mcdonough fired most likely
― call all destroyer, Thursday, 9 April 2015 22:35 (ten years ago)
i find brandon knight and eric bledsoe to be an intriguing backcourt duo actually but there's weird juju now with that franchise that i don't quite understand that makes me nervous about the whole thing
― J0rdan S., Thursday, 9 April 2015 22:35 (ten years ago)
brandon knight let's recall isn't even alive as he was callously murdered by deandre jordan
― Clay, Thursday, 9 April 2015 22:36 (ten years ago)
rip
― #wegonnabechampionship (Spottie), Thursday, 9 April 2015 22:43 (ten years ago)
since the lakers are pretty much locked in at number 4, what are the chances they fall to 6th? It's something like 20% IIRC.
― Matt Armstrong, Thursday, 9 April 2015 22:44 (ten years ago)
the Celtics deal was almost a sixers deal, for Thomas, iirc, and because it was not in danny's name we pray amen, that and a horrible conference and that is why they are making the playoffs
o what're those sounds? just pat riley grinding his teeth down to nubs, clicking his 2006 ring against his desk
― slothroprhymes, Thursday, 9 April 2015 22:45 (ten years ago)
the other problem the suns' had with that pick is that they're obv trying to win now and it's hard to do that while also bringing along a top but raw prospect
this is why the cavs traded wiggins and it's why it makes no sense for the knicks to go out and sign greg monroe and rajon rondo or whatever
but they shuold've cashed that pick in for someone better than brandon knight because the top 5 prospects in this draft are very good

if this is their mindset they're morons. A team built around Kieff, Bledsoe and Alex Len isn't exactly a team whose window is closing.
If the Spurs lucked into a top 5 pick they'd just pick a great player and move on.

― J0rdan S., Wednesday, 15 April 2015 20:18 (ten years ago)
lance has played on uniformly awful offenses for his entire career, like bottom fourth of the nba bad. you can't completely eliminate his role in that i guess but he has a unique skillset and it would be interesting to see him play on a team that has established competence on that end.
― J0rdan S., Wednesday, 15 April 2015 20:22 (ten years ago)
but he also seems like a total headcase so maybe it's a supercool beasley situation with essentially one half-season of pretty good ball

goldsberry charts & data on korver http://grantland.com/the-triangle/nba-kyle-korver-best-shooter-nba-atlanta-hawks/
― slothroprhymes, Wednesday, 22 April 2015 21:04 (ten years ago)
By the end of the regular season, Korver had accumulated 182 points more than an “average” shooter would have from his exact same shooting opportunities. Once you account for volume, it’s clear that Korver had the most efficient scoring season in the league by a wide margin.Points Above Average Shooter per 100 Shots (minimum 500 attempts):1. Kyle Korver, plus-30.22. DeAndre Jordan, plus-17.43. J.J. Redick, plus-17.24. Stephen Curry, plus-17.05. Brandan Wright, plus-16.6
Points Above Average Shooter per 100 Shots (minimum 500 attempts):
1. Kyle Korver, plus-30.22. DeAndre Jordan, plus-17.43. J.J. Redick, plus-17.24. Stephen Curry, plus-17.05. Brandan Wright, plus-16.6

― slothroprhymes, Wednesday, 22 April 2015 21:17 (ten years ago)
well measuring shooters league wide based on korvers constellation of shots is silly, those shots are the ones korver is good at! thats why he takes them! its like saying kyle korver is the best at being kyle korver, btw is it even clear from the article what hes talking about, does he just casually slide from the constellation data set to a general points per shot metric i cant tell
and then like just generally maybe some of the stuff hes saying is true but its just not very informative, he cldve dug deeper and like compared currys catch and shoot percentage to korvers, their % on open shots etc, but instead hes just all this guy is very efficient! cool i guess, its decontextualized to the point of just being a factoid
also the headline straight up says korver is the best shooter
― lag∞n, Wednesday, 22 April 2015 21:30 (ten years ago)
many of his pieces r even worse than this one conceptually tho
― lag∞n, Wednesday, 22 April 2015 21:32 (ten years ago)
there's a part in that article about how korver is the best shooter where he brings up a data point that implies the next best shooter is deandre jordan which either makes you question either what kinda data we're looking at or if the author is paying attention to how he's making his points
― Clay, Wednesday, 22 April 2015 21:37 (ten years ago)
like you can like math and all but you have to be able to critically assess your math to really have a viewpoint that isn't "wow I like math check it out"
― Clay, Wednesday, 22 April 2015 21:38 (ten years ago)
his articles kinda come of as him looking at one of his pretty charts and going oh and this part and this part and this part and then realizing that he shd somehow try to string those thoughts into an argument by saying efficiency
― lag∞n, Wednesday, 22 April 2015 21:41 (ten years ago)
also like he says efficiency but theres clearly some sort unmentioned floor as far as number of shots taken to qualify for the list of best shooters
― lag∞n, Wednesday, 22 April 2015 21:43 (ten years ago)
yea there's no nuance to it, like no control put out there against his hypothesis (the league average as a whole is too wide a swath of data to really serve as such). the easiest one would be as you said, someone like curry, who's often creating threes right away for himself off the dribble
title is prob the result of an editor tryna get optimal SEO juice outta that shit
― slothroprhymes, Wednesday, 22 April 2015 21:44 (ten years ago)

― #wegonnabechampionship (Spottie), Wednesday, 22 April 2015 21:47 (ten years ago)
like i fully believe in sports stats and their proper implementation, etc. etc. but the literalism can be baffling, like for example you would much rather have marc gasol on yr team as center than deandre - even though deandre's FG% (like his number in this somewhat arbitrary metric) is higher - because whether gasol's percentage is lower or not he's inherently a more diverse shooter & offensive player
― slothroprhymes, Wednesday, 22 April 2015 21:48 (ten years ago)
