i can sorta understand it from okc's standpoint in that if you're a franchise w/ little imagination then 'big name college coach' is an obv direction to go though 'we need to take that last step to a championship, who can get us there? i know, some dude who's never coached in the nba' is weird; brad stevens has done well but it's early yet and he is very much an anomaly, the only other case i can think of a coach making the college to nba jump from the past thirty or so years you can make a case for as a success is pitino's stint w/ the knicks. i get why donovan went there, other prominent college coaches who failed in the pros (calipari, pitino w/ the celts) went to situations w/ pretty dire talent so i can see thinking that's why they failed but it's such an immediate high pressure situation, not only w/ 'championship or bust' but also w/ 'keep yr stars happy' that it seems like a setup for failure in a different way. part of me also wonders in some way if this isn't on some level okc preparing for possibly having to rebuild in a couple of years time. let's say durant does walk, doesn't that increase their incentive to trade westbrook if only cuz losing both those guys and getting nothing in return is the kind of thing that when that franchise does recover odds are sam presti works someplace else.

hiring college coaches is almost always a terrible idea imo brad was an exception he took no name teams to the champ game two years in a row just on being well coached, the last college coach to succeed in the pros was... no one

i mean larry brown did it but he coached in the aba before that, anyway all that was a long time ago

college is such a different and worse game and culture and then you have this aspect where a ton of the success is based on recruiting so its hard to judge whos a good coach even at the college level much less who will be good in the pros where the game is so much more sophisticated and youre dealing w adult millionaires not naive kids who you can just yell at and manipulate emtionally

youd see a lot more college coaches in the pros cause teams are dumb and seduced by big names but most of the most successful ones understand not to mess with a good thing

there have been coaches who made the jump and won championships (fitch, daly, brown) but it wasn't w/ the first nba job. even w/ the guys who do well or ok there's some experience as a nba assistant coach. there's more of a precedent w/ this kind of move working w/ the nfl and even there you're more likely to end up a spurrier than a jimmy johnson.

the spurs really need a george hill. the pacers are looking at retooling most of their roster and should dump hibbert and david west. hibbert and west are both due to be overpaid though not by a lot.

on the other hand, the only attractive tradeable contract the spurs have is patty mills. and the spurs dont have any decent picks.

and yea pelis offense almost certainly was mostly team talent, as previously stated monty is great for players and crap at strategy, and his one quirk - decent out of bounds plays in the reg season - absolutely died in the playoffs (see game 3)

i mean im sure okc is looking at the warriors success with a first time coach and trying to imitate it but they got a much worse ex head coach

yeah he also has to learn to relate to nba players, also he's allowed to have multiple assistants, i mean this isn't happening in a vacuum i know but in a vacuum there's nothing wrong with hiring monty williams to be an assistant coach

you can't really separate things from Ranadive tho, who clearly has been calling the shots to some degree

the lance for barnes + hawes trade seems like a gamble for both the clippers and hornets. but I like the spirit of risk-taking that it shows. who knows, maybe hawes will look better on an eastern conference team and lance might wake up if he's playing with cp3 and blake

They spent the whole NBA finals riding the 3 point shooting of Andre Iguodala which is a sign of some needs on offense.

they needed klay to show up in the series first and foremost

they should be able to skate thru the regular season as easily as they did this year but matt is right that the cavs used a gameplan that will be the blueprint against them in the playoffs next year and if some of those shots don't fall against better teams they could go out earlier than they would expect
