the thing about amassing so many draft picks in the NBA is that realistically you can only add like, 2 maybe 3 rookies to your roster in a given year. so teams know that if they wait danny out he's gonna have to start offering the draft picks around more liberally. no team has use for like 5 or 6 picks in a year, let alone 8.

eh the teams still have to compete against each other tho, and he can always stash players in europe, and 2nd round/late 1st round picks are pretty fungible anyway

both butler and george seem pretty unlikely those are like those teams main dudes and you never hear anything abt them being troubled or unhappy, tho i guess i cld see either club being ready to blow it up, still doesnt seem like a good idea to trade away players of that caliber in their prime regardless of where yr team is at, those are the types of dudes youre trying to get

kinda the celtics west in that they have a bunch of good players in search of a star, except their good players are better than the celtics good players prob

favors is a beast, he should get more hype but the jazz play at such a slow pace and it deflates his numbers

i don't think the jazz need a Star as badly as the celtics, their 4 main guys are all better at scoring

jazz dudes def more objectively talented in various ways than the celtics but much less fun to watch, imo, bc the pace is so thoroughly glacial not just spurs/grizzlies slow, also less versatile

idk i enjoy watching low pace half-court offense but it might just be stockholm syndrome from the garnett era celtics

and everyone hated them lol, but yeah a lot of it comes down to rule changes making it harder to score in the half court thereby making pace more valuable, also maybe the league just getting a lil smarter

now i'm trying to find the fastest and slowest teams relative to league average in recent history

the slowest team i've found so far is the 95-96 cavs at an incredible 9.5 possessions per game below average (this year's jazz is a season outlier at only 4.8 below for reference)

an underrated contributor to increased pace is the league stared enforcing the rule that the offense cant touch the ball after theyve made a basket, payers used to always give it a lil tap right after it dropped through the basket acting all helpful but really just trying to slow down the other team

favors is a beast, he should get more hype but the jazz play at such a slow pace and it deflates his numbers

fastest team in the play by play data era is the terrible '90-'91 denver nuggets who played an incomprehensible 113.7 pace while the league average was 97.8 and the next closest team was at only 103.6

dame hit a 3/4 court bank after a foul near the end of the game that was pretty gorgeous

went to the hawks game last night, insane number of warriors jerseys there, the only other times i can think of where it's even been noticeable is when the clippers come to town (and those are always just the obv worst ppl wearing them), there was a sizeable grizzlies contingent when i saw them play but they kind sat near each other so maybe there's a memphis diaspora in atlanta where they get together and talk about how much the bbq in georgia kinda sucks, and kentucky jerseys when i saw minnesota. however i don't go see the knicks, lakers, or celtics when they come to town so there might be a bunch of transient fans then also. A LOT of kids in curry jerseys. none of the hawks fans around me were begrudging it, we were all there to #witness or whatever. the warriors are the best team i've ever seen in person, the ball movement is insane, they're really fucking deep (and i know ppl are like 'they're not gonna be able to keep this team together' etc but even after barnes and whoever leaves for more money they'll still be great and a contender, they just might not be historically great), it can be really devastating to have most of yr starters out there against their second unit for a good chunk of time while curry is sitting and you're only able to maybe cut their lead by like eight points. anyway the warriors opened up a huge lead but the hawks managed to come back briefly on them and man this is the second time this season i've been at a game where their opponent opens up a 20+ approaching 30 point lead and the hawks have managed to claw back and take a lead and even though neither time did it hold it's still just the most exhilarating thing to experience. it was mostly dennis too, love that dude and man have the fans turned on teague, ppl were so angry when budd took dennis out and put teague in, i acutally felt bad, like teague would even hit a decent shot and fans would still be calling for budd to get him out of there. the hawks in general played like there were scared, schroeder the exception, like when you watch thabo almost every time he gets the ball he acts a little scared, like he would rather he had not gotten the ball, and even tonight when he had a decent game and hit a couple of big shots, at the end of the third there was a three he hit as the clock expired that got waved off after review that would've counted if he hadn't done that thabo hesitation. anyway other than dennis the whole team had that thabo hesitation. curry is absolutely terrifying, i mean - https://youtu.be/2qd8h6b_1yM - i've never seen lebron in person (hopefully will change that soon) but i haven't felt that kind of presence since like jordan or bird, just a weird mix of terror and admiration, pure awe. there was a moment this little girl sang some song w/ black history month (i didn't know it, something xian, it wasn't lift every voice and sing), and she was amazing tbh and afterwards curry came up to her and like patted her on the back and man the whole arena just loved the dude and that little girl was beaming. anyway here's a bunch of kids watching steph ride a stationary bike -

I imagine joe will be signing for vet minimum or maybe some chunk of mid level if anyone still has it and can use it but he's probably looking for best case scenario of useful bench guy in the stretch and playoffs who then gets a modest two or three year deal to play slightly less old Paul pierce role for a young but playoff bound team

It would be amazing if him leaving completed the nets tailspin and then the c's also signed him for that extra juice role for the playoffs
