i know he's no one's idea of a strong defender, but im impressed with david lee's contributions so far. he's still quick on his feet and gives the spurs a guy who can board and shoot and pass well. he's not as creative as boris, but he's already an upgrade over david west.

i agree somewhat but on the other hand nba player types have changed drastically over the last ten etc years like non shooting players are a lot less tenable now, slow big guys etc, specialists

i mean yeah the league aint exactly full of dray clones yet, but a definite type of big men absolutely went out of favor. embiid and KAT and brow are stretch 5s who havent won shit yet (to be fair i think theyll get there).

yeah i think the implied point behind "the big man is over" was more right than wrong. big NBA players didn't die but the traditional back to the basket big man basically has. really good big guys basically have three molds now:

-- elite face up shooter (dirk, pau, bosh, aldridge)
-- super athletic rim runner, rim protector and rebounder (deandre, drummond, whiteside, dwight at one point, gobert possibly)
-- all-around gamebreaker (towns, anthony davis, draymond)

cousins is the only elite big i can think of that has primarily a back to the basket game? maybe jokic too in terms of younger players. guys who are extremely good at playing that way can still be MVP-level players, so to an extent matt is right about just wanting "good NBA players." but it's hard not to feel like guys in the roy hibbert or al jefferson role are being valued less all over the league. it was a very short time ago that guys like jared sullinger and tyler hansborough were considered borderline elite prospects.

i guess the cool thing is that those super elite big men are asked/allowed to do so much on offense than someone like hakeem or even KG were
