― johnny crunch, Saturday, 24 December 2016 02:02 (eight years ago)
uconn was so thin on ballhandlers cuz adams left injured, rodney purvis had to do way to much and had 20 pts on 5-22 shooting (1-13 from 3pt)

Why do people dislike Bill Walton calling basketball games? Stop taking everything so seriously
― Matt Armstrong, Sunday, 26 February 2017 05:06 (eight years ago)
I'd rather have bill walton calling 80% of NBA games than hearing Mike Breen fake laughing 75 times

bill was a lot more interesting as a vegetarian hippie with radical politics than he is now.

None of my favorite Bill Walton broadcasting moments had anything to do with those things
― Matt Armstrong, Sunday, 26 February 2017 05:09 (eight years ago)
Bill Walton and Kevin Harlan are without question the best ever at calling bad games, of which there are many
― Matt Armstrong, Sunday, 26 February 2017 05:10 (eight years ago)
i wouldn't have pegged matt as a walton fan. vitale is really bad too. i thought walton was fine 15 years ago doing the nba, but i can't listen to him for more than 30 seconds now.
― circles, Sunday, 26 February 2017 08:09 (eight years ago)
The only time I disliked Walton is when he called games with Snapper Jones and they spent half the game flirting

meeting my brother in vegas next week. How does ilx feel about gonzaga this year?
― Sufjan Grafton, Sunday, 12 March 2017 04:36 (eight years ago)
imo Zags are no better than an Elite Eight team. Well coached, as always, with good talent, but insufficient quickness or rebounding to break into the Final Four. but predicting the NCAA tournament is always a crap shoot.
― a little too mature to be cute (Aimless), Sunday, 12 March 2017 04:43 (eight years ago)
haven't seen them play but my eternal instinct is to discount west coast teams, particularly those who, like gonzaga, have played essentially no close games
so yeah they'll probably win i guess
― mookieproof, Sunday, 12 March 2017 04:45 (eight years ago)
I never know what to do with gonzaga or teams in the new big east
― Sufjan Grafton, Sunday, 12 March 2017 05:37 (eight years ago)

Is the oregon injury serious? I know bonzie about that.
― Sufjan Grafton, Sunday, 12 March 2017 05:40 (eight years ago)
All 4 of the top West teams are good. Really good. Three *can* win the NC. Oregon could until Boucher went out. His injury will cost them at some point, no doubt in my mind. (Well, it might've last night. But I think it also knocks them down a notch overall.)
― alpine static, Sunday, 12 March 2017 23:18 (eight years ago)
yeah, the Oregon Ducks' chances at a Final Four appearance probably evaporated with Boucher's injury. (sheds a tear)

― johnny crunch, Monday, 13 March 2017 13:57 (eight years ago)
The seeding is incredibly out of whack this year, especially with the Big 10. I follow the B1G more attentively than any other conference, and it is clear that the best three teams are Purdue, Michigan, and Wisconsin in some order, and Minnesota is not so great.

south carolina played way over their heads but that's still an insanely bad loss for duke
― J0rdan S., Monday, 20 March 2017 15:42 (eight years ago)
eh, it's not as bad as the lehigh etc. losses of years past. duke was wildly inconsistent all year -- they lost to nc state at home ffs -- and were missing a point guard
will say that frank martin had south carolina better prepared tho
― mookieproof, Monday, 20 March 2017 15:56 (eight years ago)
there was a beautiful moment when the game was clearly over but the tv guys were pretending it wasnt and one of them was all dukes got to maintain its composure have nerves of steel like their coach [cut to coach k who is literally crying]

― mookieproof, Monday, March 20, 2017 11:56 AM (twenty-four minutes ago) Bookmark
idk the duke team that lost to lehigh wasn't that great. austin rivers, seth curry and two plumlees. cj mccollum put up 30 points in that game for lehigh. losing to mercer with jabari parker and rodney hood was prob worse.
this team has a top 5 pick, another lottery pick, maybe two or three more first rounders, four of the top 16 recruits... south carolina had 1 really good player but yuck
― J0rdan S., Monday, 20 March 2017 16:28 (eight years ago)
this is anecdotal but it does seem like going the all superstar freshman route is pretty boom or bust
ultimately i don't see top coaches turning down guys as talented as tatum or giles even if they're only going to stay for one year, but if roy williams goes to a second straight final four w/ a team that probably has no NBA players outside of maybe justin jackson it will be interesting to contrast that with coach k's newfound calipari approach to recruiting (of course if one year you get okafor, winslow & tyus jones...)
― J0rdan S., Monday, 20 March 2017 16:31 (eight years ago)
i can accept the argument that a team with that much future nba talent should have been better overall, but it never really came together with any consistency, perhaps because the freshmen got late starts due to injuries, perhaps because k's short-bench instincts never let giles or bolden emerge. wonder if bolden will transfer.
(i also think that playing four games in four days the previous weekend wasn't helpful, but hey, michigan managed okay.)
having an experienced team is an asset, but i don't think roy goes recruiting with the idea that he wants someone good, but not so good he'll leave after only a year or two. no one turns down talent, even if it results in the relatively crappy defense duke has played lately

I need to memorialize this for posterity (it is also really difficult to search online for), so bc the ncaa is too cheap or just doesn't want to deal w arranging halftime shows at these games, this year they did a shooting competition where I think a non athlete student from or somehow related to each school had 60-seconds to get as many pts as possible - scoring was 1 pt for layups (but you couldn't take them consecutively), 3 for free throws, 5 for 3 pts and 10 for halfcourt makes; it was run at all sights and you were competing against all other participants, top scorer for each round 1 and round 2 got $500 and a chance to be entered to win a trip to the final 4 (or something like that)
the Wichita contestant confidently ran right to a corner three pt shot and started hoisting, airballed AT LEAST ten in a row, but stubbornly would not move off that shot and ended w/ 6 points
the UK contestant confidently went to the top of the key 3 pt shot and started hoisting -- he made 16 3s in 60 seconds!! 80 points, it was impressive as hell; nb the previous highest point total we saw was 39 pts from the sacramento site

I'd definitely believe this could just be the start. There has been shoe contract/AAU shenanigans happening for 30+ years. I'm sure eventually something with the Nike schools is to come. There has been allegations around the Nike/AAU for decades but nothing ever happened.
Then again, North Carolina got off pretty much with nothing considering how much academic fraud their sports programs were doing.

Louisville men's basketball coach Rick Pitino, who has been placed on unpaid administrative leave amid a federal investigation into fraud and corruption, is the "Coach-2" who played a role in funneling money to a recruit, a source confirmed to ABC News on Thursday.According to court records, Christian Dawkins, the former agent for ASM Sports who was charged in both parts of the college basketball case, told the cooperating witness, Marty Blazer, that he helped funnel $100,000 to the family of recruit Brian Bowen "at the request of a coach," identified as "Coach-2."CBS first identified Pitino as "Coach-2" on Thursday.Court records also said Adidas executive Jim Gatto "spoke directly with Coach-2 multiple times in the days before [Bowen] publicly committed" to Louisville.During a meeting in a hotel room in Las Vegas on July 27, which was recorded by video cameras placed in the room by the FBI the day before, Dawkins, Jonathan Brad Augustine (the director of a Florida-based AAU program) and an undercover agent discussed how to pay $100,000 to the family of Bowen, a highly recruited player from LaPorte, Indiana, who had recently committed to play for Louisville, which has a shoe and apparel contract with Adidas.Because two Adidas employees involved in the scheme were having difficulty getting the money, they wanted to funnel the payments through Augustine's AAU program, which was sponsored by Adidas. At one point during the conversation in the hotel room, according to FBI documents, Augustine allegedly said, "No one swings a bigger [expletive] than [Coach-2] at [Adidas]" and added "all [Coach-2] has to do is pick up the phone and call somebody, [and say], 'These are my guys; they're taking care of us.'"
