Kobe Bryant didn't mince words when he told ESPN's Jalen Rose that only a "special" kind of player can be a Los Angeles Laker.

The future Hall of Famer, who played his entire 20-year career with the Lakers, was asked whether he would help the team recruit free agents this summer, given the amount of salary-cap space and young talent the franchise has as it attempts to climb back to a championship level.

After laughing off the idea of "coddling" players (or "babysitting" them, Rose suggested) and boasting his rings and team banners, Bryant didn't hold back.

"You know, the thing about this franchise is that you shouldn't need recruiting to come in it," Bryant said. "It takes a special person to want to play for this franchise, and take the pressure that comes along with playing for this franchise. The pressure of following Magic [Johnson]'s footsteps, myself and the dynasty that we've had, it takes a special person to do that.

"And if I need to convince you come here, to carry that legacy forward, then you ain't the one to be it."

The Lakers have 16 championships and last won in 2010, when Bryant was named Most Valuable Player of the Finals for the second straight year. Bryant won five championships as a Laker in seven trips to the Finals; Johnson won five championships in nine Finals appearances.

"When you're here, the most important thing is winning championships. I don't care about anything else. It's winning championships," Bryant said. "You don't have to like each other, but you will show up to practice every day and play hard, you will focus and commit to winning, and you know, if that's the case, then you'll be just fine."

"And if not?" Rose asked.

"Then you can go play someplace else," Bryant said. "That's fine, too. I mean, it's a certain personality that comes along with it. It's a brand thing. I mean, the Lakers stand for excellence. They stand for winning. We don't hang division banners. You know what I'm saying? We don't do that. We don't retire everyone's jerseys. We retire Hall of Fame jerseys.

"... The people that are here need to be able to lift that standard and hold themselves to that standard. Which in turn gives you the ability to hold everybody else to that standard. If you can't do that, you can't be here."

The Lakers are 23-34 at the All-Star break. They haven't reached the playoffs since the 2012-13 season.

i guess what it comes down to is what do you value more: chip count (for which phil is untouchable) or sustained excellence. to phil's credit, neither the bulls nor the shaq-kobe lakers teams ever won titles without him, but they also represent some of the most stacked teams of their eras. pop drafted good players and helped make them great and won 5 titles, many of them rather improbably. he's made the playoffs every year and did so without ever leading the league in salary (i'm not sure if they've even ever been top 5).

In the whole history of Star Spangled Banner renditions, this one is nowhere near the worst. First, she remembered all the words and you could understand them. Next, she was within hailing distance of the notes she wanted to hit. Third, you have to realize this song is called the F***ING "Star Spangled Banner" which awful song title is a dead giveaway that it is in impossibly bad song, all on its own, without so much as a speck of assistance from a bad singer required to make it ridiculous.

What's impossible is making this song sound listenable.

the east playoff race is so weird

theres a 9 game gap between the raps and the 3rd seed cavs

only 3 games between the cavs and the 8th seed (heat)

then a full 4 games between the heat and the ninth seed

east and west are pretty similar with 2 clear top seeds then a logjam

top 8 seems pretty set in the east

538 says sixers have a >99% chance of making the playoffs which is comforting when they blow two 20 point leads in one game and have 26 turnovers

yeah you're two best players havent even logged a full seasons worth of games yet (just checked and embiid has player 82 games). i hope things stay as they are currently and they play the cavs in the first round.

It’s real tho and manifests itself in massive amounts of turnovers and defensive breakdowns (due to rotations/positioning and not really raw talent) and a little bit weird laissez faire crunch time

All of which are fixable with experience and good coaching, most young teams progress in these areas naturally

"young team" is just a more hopeful way of saying "not exactly a good team". after this season your brother will undoubtedly say "wait 'til NEXT year!" fan optimism is a wonderful thing.

btw, nice to see the brow doing so well lately.

naw, the sixers are absurdly talented and very young, they will be good for a long time (assuming health)

feel like no one even talks about Saric. after a slow start trying to fit in w ben he's become a really good 3rd banana

yeah 6ers have become one of my LeaguePass teams. they are fun. Saric has been much more consistent this year.

also they have the best uniform set. very key.

philly obvs has a ton of young talent but im not totally stoked on how it fits together/their ability to develop it, not saying it wont work out for them just it seems like a more fraught road ahead than most people seem to think

the things i dont like abt philly:

embiids game is wildly undisciplined, gets by on insane talent, but has shown no signs hes interested in doing the actually good basketball things eg hes shooting 30% from 3 on 3.5 attempts commits 4! tos, also throws his injury prone body around like a rag doll
simmons cant shoot, at all, like literally cannot shoot
(both of those things are kinda cute in the regular season but are very exploitable by prepared playoff opponents)
simmons and embiid are prob both centers
their #1 draft pick pg is on some sort of quest to destroy his jump shot?? and has barely played nba basketball
they might be a garbage organization

as a t-wolves fan i feel philly is cool and fascinating in a way that some wolves teams have been that makes them boner material for "league pass team" junkies but somehow will stop short of being actually good

whereas this years wolves are actually *better* and sometimes *good* but less fashionable

the wolves have two really good players and the rest of the team is kinda just normal, not sure what their path to contending is, other than andrew wiggings keeping his promises

Goon's definitions of 'good' and 'bad' are very different than others, is what I've gathered. He's referred to klay as 'bad' many times so I now read his 'bad' as 'very good but dont want to praise'. Helps his posts make a lot more sense.
