some early infos

Pascal Siakam is averaging 27.5 points, up from 16.9 last season, and he’s doing it with a drastically different style than before.

Siakam fed off corner 3s and cuts in the halfcourt, but now he's creating for himself using post-ups and pick-and-rolls. https://t.co/7uHLuW8Pr7 pic.twitter.com/Ka96chnQpr

Among the 28 lineups with 24+ minutes this season, the Nuggets second unit and Nuggets first unit are the slowest lineups in the NBA (bench at 90.1, starters at 96.1).

The Pacers starters (97.3), Jazz starters (99.8) and Hawks starters (100.3) round out the slowest five units.

lag∞n, Wednesday, 30 October 2019 18:30 (five years ago)

I’m not sure what’s going on with the Nuggets pace. Doesn’t make sense

Matt Armstrong, Wednesday, 30 October 2019 19:24 (five years ago)

I think they were pretty slow last year but they also would push the ball off most rebounds

Matt Armstrong, Wednesday, 30 October 2019 19:26 (five years ago)

their best player is very slow

lag∞n, Wednesday, 30 October 2019 19:39 (five years ago)

Yeah but I feel like he’s better when the pace is fast!

Matt Armstrong, Wednesday, 30 October 2019 19:43 (five years ago)

I guess my big issue is that the pace is really slow right now but they aren’t really posting Jokic up that much

Matt Armstrong, Wednesday, 30 October 2019 19:45 (five years ago)

gross

James Harden leads the NBA in points despite ranking 16th in made field goals.

How does he do it?

He's scoring 15.8 points per game at the free throw line!

Isaac joins Hakeem Olajuwon (8 times) and Ralph Sampson as the only players to accomplish the feat.#MagicAboveAll

J0rdan S., Sunday, 17 November 2019 20:01 (five years ago)

i thought de'andre hunter made sense for them... getting a wing and defensive stopper to pair with trae. but i watch them now and wonder if they'd have been better off taking a player who can do more when the ball in his hands. hunter will almost def be very good on defense but if his offense maxes out at otto porter/oubre im not sure i'll be overly enthused.

J0rdan S., Sunday, 17 November 2019 20:05 (five years ago)

I'm on the fence on both rooks. Cam has the nba body and good instincts, but sucks at putting the ball in the basket. Hunter has looked really solid on offense some games and not so much others. He's surprisingly good at getting to the basket, but a mediocre finisher. I'm willing to wait on both, but tempering my expectations.

Clint Capela is the first player to grab at least 20 rebounds in five straight games since Ben Wallace in 2003. The last player with six consecutive 20-rebound games was Dennis Rodman in 1995 (Rodman’s streak ended at seven). So much for the idea Russ would steal Capela's boards.

A bit of history for you. The Trail Blazers acquired Moses Malone in the ABA dispersal draft that happened when the NBA and ABA merged. However, the Blazers already had Bill Walton at center and had just acquired Maurice Lucas, too, so they traded Malone away at once for money and a 1st round pick.

The next season (1976-77) the Trail Blazers won the NBA championship, largely on the strength of the players they picked up in the dispersal draft. Nobody missed Moses Malone... until Walton got hurt in 1978, and the Blazers had no decent backup center, and they didn't get back to the Finals for another 13 years.

Don’t listen to charlatans that say the midrange game is dead. Star players still take them, role players have moved back to give more space.
Also, thresholds on hex plots can be abused to drive a narrative.

its really the long twos thatve fallen off a cliff, down by 50% in that chart, wldve expect the in between game to have increased feels like floaters are a bigger deal now but its pretty stable in those charts

he has the images in reverse chronological order there btw

lag∞n, Wednesday, 15 January 2020 22:57 (five years ago)

yeah the long twos are the killer. funny to watch old iverson clips and hes doing step backs and pull ups with his heels basically on the 3p line multiple times per game it seems.

I only watched the first half and he didn’t really seem to have it going, looks like he played better in the second. he actually hasn’t looked as good since coming back from injury, wonder if something is lingering

k3vin k., Thursday, 16 January 2020 17:40 (five years ago)

expecting him to play how he did to start the season all the time is a lot

lag∞n, Thursday, 16 January 2020 17:41 (five years ago)

shooting 31.7% from three on the season. his free throw rate and percentages look good. hovering around 60% true shooting. got to get that three percentage up to at least league average tho.

omg what did you type to find this gif? (Spottie), Thursday, 16 January 2020 17:43 (five years ago)

theres really not any reason for him to take such difficult 3s when he can get anywhere on the court he wants

lag∞n, Thursday, 16 January 2020 17:45 (five years ago)

yeah there’s so many times where he takes a shot from 4 or 5 feet from behind the line when he’s already lost his defender beyond any hope

then again I feel like I read somewhere in the past couple years that NBA dudes don’t really lose too much accuracy taking deeper threes, but maybe I’m misremembering

k3vin k., Thursday, 16 January 2020 23:03 (five years ago)

i think its more an issue of being on balance a good state to shoot than distance seems like his range is real good

lag∞n, Thursday, 16 January 2020 23:10 (five years ago)

lag∞n, Thursday, 16 January 2020 23:12 (five years ago)

A True White Kid that can Jump (Granny Dainger), Thursday, 16 January 2020 23:12 (five years ago)

yeah he has the ball in his hands every play wld be interesting to see what he can do off the ball hes so crafty

lag∞n, Thursday, 16 January 2020 23:13 (five years ago)

was just thinking about this last night actually, the times he doesn’t bring the ball up he’s usually standing around 25 feet from the hoop waiting to take over if the play gets busted, and yeah he never catches and shoots it seems. I mean dallas has literally the best offense of all time so it’s working, but he def has a lot of stuff to add to his game, great time to be alive

k3vin k., Thursday, 16 January 2020 23:17 (five years ago)

theres gotta be no way his and dallas play can hold up like this for an entire season but obvs a step down wld still be silly good

feel like he's settling into his role as like evolutionary channing frye or something... huge floor spacer who can also protect the rim. pretty much what most teams are looking for a in a center these days if you don't have one of the sui generis embiid/jokic types.

Early in the season it seemed like maybe he couldn’t shoot anymore but I guess he had just been on ice so long that he had to relearn shooting in games

"Lillard is the only player in league history other than Wilt Chamberlain with three 60-plus point games in the same season."

Clay, Wednesday, 12 August 2020 05:51 (five years ago)

heat been letting tyler herro play point guard for huge stretches of games lately w/ butler & dragic sitting and he's looked pretty awesome. had his first career 30 point game vs the thunder tonight ... his game is expanding, some of these finishes are really creative and he's had some good passes too. i still think his ideal role is as a dynamite bench scorer but i feel like he has perennial sixth man of the year potential. he'll also be a great crunch time player at least on offense bcuz you can't leave him open but he's already great at getting his shot off too when guys contest, and now he's adding some playmaking. he will have one of the nastiest step backs in the game sooner rather than later as well.

micah, Friday, 14 August 2020 23:32 (five years ago)

Prob best cast as a 6th man but doubt he’d be willing to take that role. Lotta teams need wings so he should have suiters.

Spottie, Friday, 14 August 2020 23:54 (five years ago)

hollinger: While the Mavs can score, calling this the “best offense ever” isn’t quite true. They have the highest Offensive Efficiency mark in league annals since they began tracking turnovers, but the rising offensive tide of recent years lifts all boats. Relative to the league, this isn’t even the best Dallas offense ever. It’s not even close, actually. This season’s Mavs were 6.1 points better than the league average, which is nice but not historically amazing. The 2003-04 Steve Nash-Dirk Nowitzki Mavs, who smoked the league for a then-titillating 112.1 points per 100, were actually 9.2 points beyond the norm.

J0rdan S., Thursday, 20 August 2020 21:19 (five years ago)

someone on twitter asked the question who would you rather have bam or embiid and at first i laughed then i thought about it a bit..

Spottie, Thursday, 20 August 2020 21:24 (five years ago)

yeah i think you could argue that you’re more likely to win a title with bam as your no 2 than embiid as your no 1. bam is certainly the more malleable player. and i feel like everyone would agree it would be a shock if bam’s career wasn’t considerably longer

remember kevin love

Thinking about what Tatum's per game targets are going to be next year and figured 25/8/4. Looked up 25/8/4 seasons for guys under 25 years old.

It's five guys who won an MVP in their career, a 3x scoring champ, Luka Doncic, Kevin Love, and Karl Towns.

The Unofficial NBA Ref Ball Database https://t.co/YuHI7bu7mx

Contains all the fouls and violations called by each referee between 2016 and 2020 (Regular Season + Playoffs)

— llewellyn jean (@owenlhjphillips) December 9, 2020

k3vin k., Thursday, 10 December 2020 07:06 (four years ago)

id be interested to see some analysis of ref stats but it needs to be more thought out than what ive seen elsewhere. im pretty sure refs follow a defined pattern as they move around the floor so the baseline refs will naturally focus more on defensive 3 seconds, crew chiefs probably call more techs etc

micah, Thursday, 10 December 2020 09:26 (four years ago)

youd also assume that if a ref is known for calling a lot of say freedom of movement fouls then the other refs will naturally call fewer of them because they know the first ref can be relied on to make the call, which would make their individual counting stats look off but not lead to a worse outcome for the game. really this database needs advanced stats that adjusts for how each ref team performs
