Portland will veer wildly from excellence to cluelessness, not just from game to game but from quarter to quarter, until about February. After that, they will play just slightly above .500 to the end of the season and miss the playoffs by a whisker.

(That is probably true. He just gets hated on by sportswriters who are trying to act like they have some magic power of divination about who will be a real player in the league. He might not be the next Scottie Pippen/Tracy McGrady/etc., but at some point they're going to have to admit that he's pretty good.)
oops, I mean...YEAH, BILL SIMMONS, OBVIOUSLY ADAM MORRISON "INTENSITY" AND PREDILECTION FOR TAKING HIGHLY CONTESTED JUMPERS MEANS HE WILL BE A MUCH BETTER PLAYER THAN RUDY GAY.
― circles, Saturday, 10 November 2007 18:38 (eighteen years ago)
I don't remember Simmons saying that Adam Morrison would be good.

Simmons thought Portland was stupid for not taking Morrison, he was like "BUILT IN NORTHWEST AUDIENCE!!! EVERYONE WILL LOVE HIM!!! IDIOTS!!! I SHOULD RUN A TEAM!!!" (Y'know, because Washington and Oregon are the exact same state.)

"BUILT IN NORTHWEST AUDIENCE!!! EVERYONE WILL LOVE HIM!!! IDIOTS!!! I SHOULD RUN A TEAM!!!"
Well also every single college dude and radio host in Oregon was screaming the same thing at the top of their lungs because they loved the INTENSITY and the MUSTACHE (HE'S BASICALLY LIKE US GUYS! LOL IRONY!) and it was like a sin to suggest maybe Morrison's game was tailor made for NCAA and wouldn't pan out at all against, you know, defense.
― Clay, Tuesday, 13 November 2007 03:09 (eighteen years ago)
I think Morrison would have been best suited to a Kyle Korver-ish career, where he signs on with a team as a lower draft pick and earns his keep as a bench shooter, and maybe eventually develops into a rotation regular. Sticking him straight into the lineup was insane.
― polyphonic, Tuesday, 13 November 2007 08:06 (eighteen years ago)
ive enjoyed the unsurprising flame out of a. morrison. although i dont see any reason why he cant become a decent shooter in the league. people expecting him to do things he couldnt even do in college wtf.

Maybe I was immune to Morrison! To!Blazers! because I was out of the area. Also because I don't listen to college douchebags or radio hosts...and because if Bill Simmons says something about the NBA he's pretty much automatically RONG.

Steve Nash is hilarious sometimes:
On who will have the better career, Williams or Paul:
"I'd love to say that it's all the media's fault, but I understand it. Everyone tries to compare players because it's fun. It's the natural thing to do to try to think of something that's similar. Let's say we're talking on the phone and you say something about X and I'll interrupt you and say, 'Oh, you mean sort of like Y?' It's just what we do in life because we all want to relate to each other. That's kind of how I see it."

its pretty awz that the east has 2 legit contenders - theyve easily been the best in the league so far. although im sure the west powerhouses will step up by seasons end.
west is soooo deep this year. theres 10 good teams. prob a couple will be sidelined by injury eventually. but still just a brutal conference to play in. cant almost never take a night off.
orlanado has been at least somewhat meritorious so far - but theyve been living off the fools gold of a ridic season from turkoglu - whos already starting to fall apart.

― J0rdan S., Tuesday, 15 January 2008 07:58 (seventeen years ago)
btw by weak link i mean a. out of the big 3 but also b. the person who can be isolated and taken out of the game late in games
also will pierce's bad tendencies lose them a potential series to detroit? in their win @ det he dropped almost a triple double but can he accept the (probably beneficial) role of not being THE SCORER???
― J0rdan S., Tuesday, 15 January 2008 08:01 (seventeen years ago)
observation: Brandon Roy is really turning out to be a loverly player for Portland. Last night he got royally pounded for 20 points by Dwight Wade in the 3rd quarter. In the 4th quarter Roy got ticked off, took over the game, pulled the Blazers back from defeat and put that sucker back in the W column.
He's just the kind of player everyone wants to find in their Xmas stocking. At this rate Greg Oden will just be frosting on the cake. This is going to be be Roy's team for as many years as he stays healthy.
― Aimless, Saturday, 19 January 2008 18:34 (seventeen years ago)

― Dimension 5ive, Sunday, 20 January 2008 04:01 (seventeen years ago)
we struggle mightily vs teams with good big men, aldridge is no kind of defensive center really
Young Mr. Oden ought to help in that department. Apparently he is bulking up like a swollen toad (but in a good way) while his knee convalesces.
― Aimless, Sunday, 20 January 2008 19:23 (seventeen years ago)
i think so, whenever they've had good teams in the past he's been more than willing to give it up as long as they were winning. it's when the teams were absolutely shitty that he'd go stats-first in his play.
― chicago kevin, Tuesday, 12 February 2008 22:42 (seventeen years ago)
so um the celtics? u got anything jho? is pierce the weak link on the team?
ray allen who has absolutely sucked this year is clearly the weak link. his ankles just arent right. the reason the c's have prospered is their supporting cast has been much much better than anyone expected. if ray ray can get it together this could be serious.

i'm house sitting for friends for the next three weeks, i may have to see if any c's games are available ppv. i think leon went for 16 and 9 last night? pierce had 28-12-5? playing the pacers again tonight.
and i agree w/jhoshea about ray being the weakest of the new big three, his 3 point stroke is missing. not sure what's going on with him.
― chicago kevin, Wednesday, 13 February 2008 19:55 (seventeen years ago)
Portland seems to have wobbled out of its playoff orbit and back into erratic play - not just from game to game, but from quarter to quarter. I don't think they will careen into the sun, but I don't think we'll see another five game winning streak this season.
Add Oden to this mix, let them marinate a while and I expect some Finals in their future.
― Aimless, Wednesday, 13 February 2008 21:37 (seventeen years ago)

THIS IS THE BESTEST CONFERENCE EVER THE PLAYOFFS ARE GOING TO BE BONKERS ANYONE COULD WIN IT!!!!
for comparisons sake the 9th place team in the east atlanta is 21-28 AND 19.5 games out. there are 5 teamS in the east w/winning records - in the west 10.

After watching Texas-Oklahoma today: I don't like the new kind of basketball uniforms that look like t-shirts without sleeves. I guess the players like them given how many guys wear shirts like that under normal uniforms, but it seems like having the edge of the jersey up in your armpit all the time would be annoying.
― circles, Saturday, 15 March 2008 22:48 (seventeen years ago)
I'm predicting rockets tomorrow. no pau/bynum is basically last year's Lakers 2.0
― tremendoid, Saturday, 15 March 2008 23:23 (seventeen years ago)
I don't know. I want the rockets to win very badly but they've looked awkward on offense (much like at the beginning of the year) and mcgrady has played 48 minutes in the last two games because of that. He looked totally exhausted at the end of the game last night. If landry plays for the rockets and they regain their hot shooting they should win, but no landry I'd regretfully say lakers.

It really is sort of the Under-Armorization of basketball uniforms. College teams seem like they should be more tradition-bound than NBA teams but maybe are more subject to the marketing whims of Nike, Adidas, etc.
― circles, Tuesday, 18 March 2008 00:09 (seventeen years ago)
OK -- the next pundit to say something along the lines of "so-and-so doesn't want to play the Spurs, because when the playoffs come around they're a different team because they turn it on" can go sit on a Bruce Bowen kick to the nuts. If this team makes it past the 2nd round, I will eat Werner Herzog's shoe, because this conglomeration of old farts, hustle punks, dirty one-dimensional crumb bumbs, ref-whining chumpwits, and Manu Ginobli's Atlas act ain't going to do a damn thing this year.

But seriously every time Tim Duncan does that pathetic arm-spread "I NEVER FOUL THE HELL SIR" thing God has George Bush suppress more of our civil liberties.

this worked really well for the heat!!!!
― J0rdan S., Tuesday, 18 March 2008 15:58 (seventeen years ago)
that said the heat lost to a team that really countered their oldness with quickness and kinda wore them out-- who's gonna do that to the spurs? the warriors? <3 them but idk if they could beat the spurs in the first round. i think hornets or jazz would be a good matchup for spurs haters, two teams that play a similar style but have enough younger, quicker guys that could eventually wear them out. i don't see the rockets or the mavs taking them out if they met up in the first round

also igou is playing himself into near max deal range right about now i think
iggy aight, but dre miller is the best player on that squad always been severely underrated cuz he's fat w a high-ass voice and his game is ugly and weird, but he's a true point who can also score
i kinda wish my nugz kept him cuz then j.r. could start at the 2 and i wouldn't have to watch the anthony carter show

andre went from really good to a slob so quick it's hard to know where to stand with him.
― tremendoid, Tuesday, 25 March 2008 23:33 (seventeen years ago)
If he's a communications major, I'd like him to take over Reggie's TNT color man responsibilities as soon as he's bounced from the tourney. I don't even care if he's a stuttering Tourettes-addled low talker.

Warriors will not make the playoffs. ;_;
― Leee, Thursday, 3 April 2008 05:14 (seventeen years ago)
Honestly, they're not good enough anyway, so it doesn't really matter. I don't even think they're as good as they were last year, even though they've won way more games.
― polyphonic, Thursday, 3 April 2008 06:15 (seventeen years ago)
what happened to Barnes? he played a pretty big part in that playoff run last year.
― carne asada, Thursday, 3 April 2008 17:46 (seventeen years ago)
His mom passed away, for one.
― Leee, Thursday, 3 April 2008 20:48 (seventeen years ago)

carne, I suggest you wait until you feel a deep grief before you become flippant about it.
― Aimless, Friday, 4 April 2008 19:28 (seventeen years ago)
no thanks,i've had my share.
i like the kid.i hope they can work him into some games and he can make the same kind of impact he did last year.

i believe chris paul is your mvp(out on a limb here). it's still fucking frustrating not being able to see the games behind the wau stat lines but no one else has saved their best for last like this

We're down to the last 3 or 4 regular season NBA games and there still seem to be about 40 different mathematical possibilities for the playoff seeding in the Western Conference. This is somewhat fucking amazing.

(we sell golf simulators/software) he saw one of our sims @ a local golf tournament and came in to check it out - dude has a pretty good swing. when i say 'observed', i mean it, we were all sorta gawking. felt too embarassed to say anything to him but it was cool
