incredible detail that jordan and danny ainge played golf between games 1 and 2 in the '86 playoffs
― call all destroyer, Monday, 20 April 2020 02:50 (five years ago)
playing 18 holes of golf is so physically strenuous, it's insane that they did that
― J0rdan S., Monday, 20 April 2020 03:20 (five years ago)
tbh found these first two episodes pretty functional but seeing this level of footage is always wonderful. i didn't realize michael's shot vs georgetown was in the superdome
― J0rdan S., Monday, 20 April 2020 03:21 (five years ago)
yeah this was really good
― johnny crunch, Monday, 20 April 2020 03:24 (five years ago)
i agree that it's functional but they have so much good stuff to work with that i have no problem with functional
― call all destroyer, Monday, 20 April 2020 04:01 (five years ago)
I haven’t watched this yet but I don’t really buy this narrative that the bulls would have kept going if it wasn’t for that evil Jerry Krause
― Matt Armstrong, Monday, 20 April 2020 13:58 (five years ago)
it's gonna be colored by mj's perspective, otherwise he never would've agreed to this thing. but yeah, the krause stuff has always struck me as a bit mean-spirited, and now he can't defend himself.

Pippen reaming Krause out on the bus was very uhhhhhBill Wennington is a viking.
― Fuck the NRA (ulysses), Monday, 20 April 2020 15:29 (five years ago)
Didn’t know about Pip’s considerable family obligations, that explains a lot about him grabbing the first major payday offered. There is no fucking way Reinsdorf told him he should take a shorter contract.
― Fuck the NRA (ulysses), Monday, 20 April 2020 15:32 (five years ago)
Krause seemed like a real shithead but Jordan antagonized him in ways that were really counterproductive. Picking Kukoc was maybe the best thing Krause did but because Jerry did it Jordan and Pippen resolved to treat him like shit.
― Matt Armstrong, Monday, 20 April 2020 15:51 (five years ago)
yeah, i am very much looking forward to seeing what the Kukoc episode looks like
Other highlights: Jordan being an absolute dick to Harper, Oak literally slapping Pippen around
― Fuck the NRA (ulysses), Monday, 20 April 2020 17:21 (five years ago)
Anyways yeah: this is very good and I would've binge watched it all in one sitting if it were available
need to find a way to watch this
― A True White Kid that can Jump (Granny Dainger), Monday, 20 April 2020 17:32 (five years ago)
pretty convenient for Reinsdorf to have Krause--who can no longer defend himself--as a scapegoat for being a stingy shlub of an owner
― A True White Kid that can Jump (Granny Dainger), Monday, 20 April 2020 17:35 (five years ago)
it seems like there is two strains to the krause stuff
-- the personal disdain for him that def seemed OTT and petty, tho scottie is perhaps in a different category-- krause pushing phil out so he could install tim floyd, which put a hard end on the run. nobody seems to have a different narrative other than that it was krause's initiative, tho maybe krause would be able to defend himself. reinsdorf does manage to elide any questions such as "why did you let this man push phil jackson and michael jordan out?"
― J0rdan S., Monday, 20 April 2020 17:42 (five years ago)
If the 97-98 Bulls were happening today there would be a large segment of NBA Twitter saying Krause was right to want to blow it up and trade Pippen for future assets and let Jordan walk for cap space.— Sean Highkin (@highkin) April 20, 2020
i do think this is true and i bet there were even ppl at the time defending it on these grounds. it's not wrong to say that if the phil/MJ/pippen core had continued after they beat the jazz the second time they had max... 2 more years? that would have been pushing into beyond unprecedented territory basically. the end was definitely near one way or another and i agree in hindsight it's easy for there to be more uproar when the fatigue has long since dissipated
― J0rdan S., Monday, 20 April 2020 17:47 (five years ago)
I don't know what 1st soured MJ on Krause. Drafting Sellers over some UNC guy he preferred? Anyway, whatever valid beef(s) he did have w Krause was intertwined with idiotic jock vs fat dork bullshit.

― Spottie, Monday, 20 April 2020 19:25 (five years ago)
Got to the point where my stance was MJ is my guy but LeBron is undeniably great and I'm not going to say it's wrong to argue he's as good as MJ if not better. But then heard LeBron himself thinks he's now surpassed MJ's legacy and so I'm back to "fuck that dude, MJ wouldn't have lost to Dirk fucking Nowitzki with Wade & Bosh or quit on his team mid-game in a conf finals".
― A True White Kid that can Jump (Granny Dainger), Monday, 20 April 2020 19:40 (five years ago)
His relationship with general manager Jerry Krause soured because Krause and Chairman Jerry Reinsdorf limited his playing time to seven minutes per half when he finally returned, as not to endanger the franchise’s most valuable asset.
Ok now I remember this always being cited as the start of the MJ/Krause friction. Seems like an odd thing to be THAT upset with someone over. The nerve of this guy, trying to protect the team's superstar and not have him play big minutes in a meaningless season coming back from a major injury! Totally understandable for MJ to then loathe him for eternity amirite.
― A True White Kid that can Jump (Granny Dainger), Monday, 20 April 2020 20:31 (five years ago)
My earliest MJ memories are of him coming back and having that minutes restriction and it was SO FRUSTRATING as a lil dude who just wanted to see this spectacular basketball man do stuff.
― A True White Kid that can Jump (Granny Dainger), Monday, 20 April 2020 20:32 (five years ago)

First episode was great. There are all sorts of good Jordan stories coming out with this documentary.
I think the best two I heard that were new to me was John Calipari talking about a game early in his run with the Nets when Kerry Kittles as a rookie went for 15 in the first quarter against the championship Bulls. Jordan kept staring down Coach Cal in the break between quarters holding up a "o" with his hand over his eye. Pretty much they switched off with Jordan on Kittles for the rest of the game and he did not score a point for the remainder of the game.
The other one was that the Portland GM called Bobby Knight for his feelings on Michael Jordan stating they really need a center, Knight said draft Jordan and just play him at center as it did not matter, he was that good.

I'm hoping this doc delves into 80s MJ. 90s Bulls in general has been covered to death, & his style of play was a lot more fun to watch when he was young. Feel like ppl who weren't around at the time think of him as post-up fadeaway guy, end of story.
― A True White Kid that can Jump (Granny Dainger), Monday, 27 April 2020 20:06 (five years ago)

In college he never stopped moving; catches a pass on the move and either continues his momentum or immediately changes directions and makes a move to the hoop. 1st few years in NBA, he has the ball more at start of possessions, games are longer, pro style is different so he slows down sliiiightly. Then comes Fade Away Jordan, and he hardly ever seems to run apart from transition game. There's almost no high school footage that I've seen, but I assume he's just a blur out there.
― A True White Kid that can Jump (Granny Dainger), Monday, 27 April 2020 20:23 (five years ago)
yeah i think the rest will be 90s only. loved the first 4 eps so far, there's been a few nuggets of stuff I havent heard. really fun watching with my wife who knows next to nothing nothing about any of it. the footage is awesome tho, love that quirky peak behind the curtain stuff like that little "the Sniffs" snippet. would be cool if the nba was pushing out the full games/series that are being referenced like the week following the episode release. would love to watch some of these games that they're just glossing over. really tho this is making me itch for more deep dives like this on old teams or bigtime players.

the narrative is more about how MJ focuses on team rather than personal achievements to get a chip so it's sorta implied. Perhaps unsurprisingly, Magic doesn't get too much playing era screen time in this.

would love to watch some of these games that they're just glossing over.everything is on youtube, it's great. I watched game 2 of '92 Finals last night. Lil interview with MJ about his 3pt shooting in game 1, him saying he doesn't like to shoot many 3s cause it "hurts his all around game". Such a different game back then.

If you wanted to watch some of the 1st 3peat on youtube I'd go with the '93 series vs PHX. MJ and Barkley were phenomenal, and there were some good games. I was down in FL for my cousin's wedding, and game 6 was on the night of the wedding. I figured the newlyweds wouldn't want to watch it, but they invited a bunch of us over to watch in their hotel's lobby. Good lil memory, everyone went nuts when Pax hit shot that sealed it.

heard Ryen Rusillo say something I always bring up when fawning over MJ: dude never for 1 second looked awkward or out of control, and by comparison he made all of the most gifted basketball athletes of his and previous generations look stiff and clumsy (maybe some small guards a la Isiah were somewhat on his level of smoothness). Every generation after him has had that "MJ Starter Pack" of smooth physicality from a young age and so there's verrrry few stiff/awkward players at any level. Obv today's players have taken it to new levels, esp ball handling.

when lebron moves to the basket, he has a lot of the same grace but he's just so much bigger that there's a degree of him using his muscle to get in there. with michael in his prime, his fluidity of motion often looked like a special effect.
― Fuck the NRA (ulysses), Wednesday, 29 April 2020 15:02 (five years ago)
I think that's a big part of what makes LeBron special; I can't think of another player at that size who was/is as smooth as him. Predecessors would be Larry Johnson and Derrick Coleman, but it's been soooo long since I've seen those dudes play that I may see them now and be surprised they were more clunky than I remember.

this has been fantastic, just thrilling every minute of itI really enjoyed the Rodman episode, and I'd kind of started to forget the good things about Phil due to his Knicks tenurebut the zen thing, his handling of Rodman is pretty brilliant, just the idea that he is who he is and you can't change it and shouldn't tryit's definitely contrary to the authoritarian mindset of coaching, and yes like Spottie says, First Take and Twitter would be foaming at the mouth today if someone took a Vegas vacation mid seasonthe only slight comparison is maybe Belichick and Gronk, but I think it's different because it's not so much BB understands what makes people tick it's that he doesn't care and for however long Gronk's positives outweighed the negatives in his mental ledger

uhhhh they won 62 bc d rob was the mvp, sean elliott had a comeback season averaging 18 ppg on .468/.405/.807, plus avery johnson and vinny del negro each having their best years in their career up to that point. rodman missed almost half the season that year.

Didn't realize there was a thread for this--three episodes in and enjoying it.
I've mentioned my casualness as a fan, so the Jordan-Isaiah stuff--the depth of their animosity--was new to me. (Even yesterday, I saw a current interview where Thomas went out of his way to agitate Jordan.) As I was watching, the not-shaking-hands series in '91 struck me as awful. Thinking about it a few days later, I will say--and this is an irrational, suppressed part of me; I've coached lots of school sports, and always make a big deal out of sportsmanship--I kind of miss that in an era when competitive sports are so fraternal most of the time, the players bound together by their immense wealth. I like reading about when Jackie Robinson and Leo Durocher literally hated each other. (Nothing racial, but as competitors with an unbridgeable divide.) So I do understand the Pistons' motivation for walking off; they'd just been humiliated, and that's a hard switch to turn off for appearances' sake.

Laimbeer enjoyed being loathed; it seemed to be his main goal in playing, even more so than winning the game. He succeeded. The entire league and most of the fans loathed him.

my son has been playing organized hoops since he was 4 or so. the 2-5 league is just for giggles, hoop was 7.5-8' and they played with the mini ball. w few exceptions, you needed kindergarteners on your team or else you had no chance of hitting shots. this made defense v v important, tho kids at that age dont have the abstract idea of "someone else besides the ballhandler might get the ball later and i should not just pay attention to the one with the ball."
he's in the 6-7 league now which is still 7.5-8' but a larger ball. they move up to a 10' hoop in the 8-9 age group.

For awhile this guy was coming to my open gym who had grown up with Laimbeer. Played little league together. He said he was a good dude, guessed that he adopted the Asshole persona as a coping mechanism for being a target on the court (ie rich white guy) and just went down that rabbit hole.

laettner was a #3 draft pick, but he was never good enough to justify going that high. if he had insisted on being paid like an nba star he would have ended up playing somewhere in Europe, because he was only suited to be a role player and the league knew that after two or three seasons of trying to elevate him to a star.

I don't like Laetner but he was better than a role player. That 1992 draft class was 2 hall of famers and a handful of regular contributors, including Laetner. Maybe he wouldn't be #3 in a re-do, but he's in the top 5 or 6 in that class. He's just not a player you build a team around.

idk if anyones heard that story in more detail ive only ever seen it like how it was in the doc michael didnt make the team and was sad for one day but then after that he was determined and became amazing at basketball, like who made the team ahead of him what was the whole deal how good was he then
― lag∞n, Monday, 4 May 2020 01:58 (five years ago)
the timeline is weird like he didnt make the sophmore team, and then at some point between then and college north carolina came to the conclusion he was the best player in high school basketball, what was the interval between not making the team and being the best in the whole damn country, i mean i get that he grew but six one is plenty tall enough to play high school basketball, theres are tons of 6-1 guys in the pros
― lag∞n, Monday, 4 May 2020 02:03 (five years ago)
i don't remember the specifics well enough but i did read roland lazenby's michael book and the vibe was definitely that he was never some sort of incredible prospect but more someone who gradually built his game over time.
i'll try to skim it soon and see if there are some good details.

all of this points to that his hs team was prob not that hard to make! why didnt he make it

Jordan's HS coach could have had a fetish for seniors and a poor sense of his players' potentials. Or he could have hated MJ's style as not old-school enough. Or he could have been blind and daft. Or racist. You never know the whole story on this stuff.

ha ok so it literally was just some coach who only picked upperclassmen
Smith and Michael Jordan were childhood friends who played together on their ninth-grade basketball squad. In 1978, during their second year at Emsley A. Laney High School, both tried out for the lone sophomore opening on the varsity basketball team.
and yet
In 1991, Jordan acknowledged the impact of the event, "It all started when Coach Herring cut me. What it did was instill some values in me. It was a lesson to me to dig within myself."

It is kinda frightening. and I'm still lol-ing at "mad at Drexler just for existing"; it was moreso mad at media for having the nerve to compare Clyde to MJ, but still. But to compare the 2 for a sec here, I can't help but see how Drexler NOT being a psycho dickhead "competitor" hampered him. I don't think he had the full skillset like MJ had but more than that, he seemed too nice and unassuming to compete head to head with MJ.
― A True White Kid that can Jump (Granny Dainger), Monday, 4 May 2020 18:10 (five years ago)

Yeah Jordan really seens to have made it his job to be as good at being a mega worldwide celebrity as being an athleteobviously early he had good guidance from his mom keeping him in that lane (ie Nike meeting) which is really something you cant underrate the value of, given hardheaded young stars often don’t have, don’t ask for or don’t heed that kind of guidance. he was able to fight off the immature “i hate all this shit i just want to play” for a lot of his career pre first retirementit’s really impressive

i do think a lot of his way was dullard a-dog mythologizing bullshit that business school guys love but a lot of that is really pushed more by tedious sportswriters than by jordan himself, and obvs he was one of the best athletes ever and somehow even more entertaining than he shouldve been had cool sneakers and radiated charisma

I can't help but see how Drexler NOT being a psycho dickhead "competitor" hampered him.
Michael was this weird blend of mental illness, astonishing physical prowess, intelligence, creativity and basketball skill that rendered him pretty much inarguably that much better than Drexler and, on any given night, better defensively and offensively than anyone on the court. The only other modern era player I thought came close to Michael's skillset and approach was Kobe. Which is not to say that, say, LeBron or Steph are "worse" than MJ; they just were playing a different game with different bodies in a different league.

xp i guess the thing is that MJs sociopathy clearly did give him an edge but i see that as part and parcel of his approach to the game and it's not transferrable as a bonus. Like I wouldn't argue that Michael would've been that much more dominant if he had been a seven footer.#80sbabythoughts

- the team was returning 11 seniors and 3 juniors- 8 of the returning upperclassmen were guards- jordan was 5'10" at the time, and the sophomore who made the team was 6'6"- "he couldn't beat any of the upperclassmen 1 on 1 until the end of his sophomore year"- sadly, the varsity coach was out of coaching 3 years after jordan graduated due to the onset of schizophrenia

The Harvey Gantt stuff in E5 was really interesting. I'm familiar with the Jordan quote but didn't know it was connected to a specific political campaign.
Felt bad for Kukoc for being thrown into that impossible situation in the Olympics--here, go pitch to Babe Ruth and Lou Gehrig; I got them nice and angry ahead of time for you--so was glad he made a good showing second time around.

That's the best thing about this. He wiggled a bit talking about Gantt, but for the most part, I never feel like he's shaping his responses. The things that drove him then still do--loved the Clyde Drexler showdown, the way he's able to speak respectfully about Drexler but still make it clear it was a mismatch.

Barkley's words are more hurtful than he seems to realize. He focuses on how he said the people around Jordan are bad and not Jordan specifically. But in doing that, he's painting a picture of MJ as a clueless dupe. It's the sort of criticism that probably causes more turmoil and second-guessing within the org than just saying "Jordan made this or that terrible pick/decision, and they need to recover from that."

Was trying to let MJ off the hook for being a dick by thinking he just got worn down by the constant scrutiny and infamy, that he developed it as a defense mechanism. But then there's that story from that great long article several years back (I'm blanking on the author. I can picture him. Name starts with W?) about him on a commercial shoot early in his career where he put his finger into every donut in a box just so the crew wouldn't have any, because they didn't deserve HIS donuts.
― A True White Kid that can Jump (Granny Dainger), Thursday, 7 May 2020 21:29 (five years ago)
ok it's Wright Thompson and I mangled that anecdote:
"Back when they used to shoot a lot of commercials, Jordan's security team would wait for him in his trailer while he was on set. A woman named Linda cooked Michael's meals, and he loved cinnamon rolls. She'd bake a tray and bring it to him. When it came time to film, he'd see the guards eyeing the cinnamon rolls and he'd walk over and spit on each one, to make sure nobody took his food."

Barkley's been one of my favourite interviews for years, even only as a casual basketball fan. ah, that's fun!

Something I didn’t appreciate at the time was how much of Jordan’s greatness is ballhandling. None of the other guys in the greatest shooting guard discussion had handles like that. It was like trying to guard a 6’6” Iverson.
― Matt Armstrong, Sunday, 10 May 2020 17:57 (five years ago)
Isn't Steph in the greatest shooting guard discussion? Because his handles are as amazing as his shooting stats.
― A is for (Aimless), Sunday, 10 May 2020 18:16 (five years ago)

I was watching this highlight reel of Jordan's All-Star appearances yesterday. 1) It wasn't quite the hands-off shooting practice 20-25 years ago that it is today--the 2003 game-winner was very contested; 2) two or three of his most spectacular plays were feeds from Isiah Thomas.

― clemenza, Sunday, 10 May 2020 21:34 (five years ago)
yeah I caught a replay of the 98 all star game last week and those dudes were balling from the opening tip
― k3vin k., Sunday, 10 May 2020 21:35 (five years ago)
Scouting report early on for MJ was he can't dribble with his left, so force him that way. But his 1st step was so insanely quick that it didn't matter, he'd still blow by elite defenders going right.
― A True White Kid that can Jump (Granny Dainger), Sunday, 10 May 2020 22:08 (five years ago)
The 2003 all star game feels like 7 years ago to me
― Matt Armstrong, Monday, 11 May 2020 01:46 (five years ago)
re: mike’s handles and that first step it’s really insane, there are so many highlights where he’s got his back to the basket and there’s like 3 or 4 guys on him and all the sudden he’s at the rim

the basketball rarely curves
based on hundreds of hanes commercials, i feel comfortable saying michael is a terrible actor which makes the moment where he tears up about being considered a bad teammate kinda wow
"Way to go Craig"
MJs personal life except for his dad appears to be completely off limits. I think his kids have shown up three times? the only mention of him being married is when a team employee asks if he wants to call his wife after winning a championship and he seems kinda like "oh yeah, i guess i have to do that"
― Fuck the NRA (ulysses), Monday, 11 May 2020 14:15 (five years ago)
he seems to cry quite easily these days

yeah, i was like... what??
you know what else seems to be off-limits? any breakdown of his actual skills whatsoever! i would love to understand more. for instance, moves like 'the smitty' are almost invisible to the naked eye when performed in real time - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DpJ3RARZrzE - i would have loved to hear defenders talk about what made MJ so hard to beat.
― Li'l Brexit (Tracer Hand), Monday, 11 May 2020 14:26 (five years ago)
he really does seem to have always just finished up a real intense sob sesh
Like a thousand people have asked me about Jordan’s eyes. He’s not jaundiced. He has racial melanosis of the conjunctiva. Benign, flat patches of pigment around the edge of the cornea. anyone who believes Stern forced him out understands nothing about how things work. "let's get read of the league's meal ticket, because word that he's a gambling addict mayyyyy come out. But after 1.5 seasons he can come back". Conspiracy theories are a mental disease.
― A True White Kid that can Jump (Granny Dainger), Monday, 11 May 2020 17:29 (five years ago)
Who here believes that it was MJ's "style" as a teammate that got the Bulls their championships vs it was just his talent that pushed them over the top?
Is there an example of someone as competitive as Jordan who wasn't an asshole to his teammates? Is his competitiveness the reason he was the best of all time? He kinda seems to think so.
― DJI, Monday, 11 May 2020 17:32 (five years ago)
xpost Yeah it’s that whole thing of avoiding processing the tragedy as an act of chaos - it’s funny how the need to put concrete reasons behind the murder and have it ~make sense~ ironically allows for ideas that have little to no connection w reality

It's weird how he was never really beloved in Chicago. Liked, sure. I'm guessing because he was foreign when that was a pretty novel thing in American sports.
― A True White Kid that can Jump (Granny Dainger), Tuesday, 12 May 2020 01:04 (five years ago)
And yeah fuck Scottie for that. It doesn't mar my opinion of him overall but that's something I'd expect from a preening top ranked hs recruit not an nba veteran with multiple rings.

I often think about how close the 94 bulls were to winning the title, how they probably would have beaten the rockets etc. And pippen pulled that shit in the midst of it! He was so close to building a legacy for himself as the mvp of a championship team but something inside him couldn’t tolerate Kukoc having a play run for him.
― Matt Armstrong, Tuesday, 12 May 2020 01:21 (five years ago)
its pretty funny he still feels running a play for kukoc was unacceptable

I was milling around the concourse at united center before a game during the Chris Duhon-Mike Sweetney Era and a side door opened right by me. Out comes Pippen wearing a Santa hat, pulling a huge wagon full of toys. Shocked, I say "Scottie!" and he extends a handshake. Totally enveloped my tiny girlish hands. He is one lanky dude. I remember having to crane my neck to look him in the eye (I'm 6'1").
― A True White Kid that can Jump (Granny Dainger), Tuesday, 12 May 2020 02:29 (five years ago)
worth noting that although it worked out phil's idea of running a play for kukoc probably scanned as insane at the time, he was a rookie who ranked 11th on the team in true shooting. if they wanted to run a play for a shooter there were a couple of guys named steve kerr and bj armstrong.
― call all destroyer, Tuesday, 12 May 2020 02:43 (five years ago)
kukoc hit a very difficult shot, it wasn't a good shot at all

― call all destroyer, Tuesday, 12 May 2020 02:49 (five years ago)
Pippen is odd looking but he's hardly the most weirdly shaped dude on the Bulls, that would be Phil Jackson
― frogbs, Tuesday, 12 May 2020 02:51 (five years ago)
all these scores in 80s, an ot game in which neither teams gets to 100
all through the 90s the NBA officiating, especially in the playoffs, allowed defenders to bang against, shove, muscle aside, hack, and occasionally outright mug offensive players. I hated that aspect of the era and I blame the Pat Riley Knicks as much as I blame the Bad Boy Pistons. To me that's not good hoops, and I'm much happier with the speedy, smooth, creative offensive flows of today's game.

― Li'l Brexit (Tracer Hand), Tuesday, 12 May 2020 21:16 (five years ago)
ANYWAY.. I just watched it again. not mentioned in the doc - pippen's last two good looks leading up to that were 1) a brick 2) giving up possession on a shot clock violation.

a starter getting pinch hit for in bot of 9th?
― A True White Kid that can Jump (Granny Dainger), Tuesday, 12 May 2020 22:20 (five years ago)
In terms of the perceived insult, yes, but he's being removed from the game by the manager; Pippen removed himself. Maybe if you sent your closer out in the 6th in a non-crucial situation because you'd lost confidence in him and he refused to go out.
― clemenza, Tuesday, 12 May 2020 22:27 (five years ago)
xp I still remember Trent Tucker hitting that shot to win game with .1 seconds left. Caused them to make rule that anything less than .3 had to be a tip in/volley.
― A True White Kid that can Jump (Granny Dainger), Tuesday, 12 May 2020 22:27 (five years ago)
The Bulls, led by first-year head coach Phil Jackson, later filed an official protest with the NBA about the play. By their estimate, the play took closer to 0.4 seconds. However, timekeeper Bob Billings and referee Ronnie Nunn, who were working that game, claimed everything went perfectly fine. The protest was disallowed.
lol never change, nba refs
― A True White Kid that can Jump (Granny Dainger), Tuesday, 12 May 2020 22:38 (five years ago)
After the Trent tucker thing they did slow motion studies and found that .3 is the minimum amount of time for anyone to catch and shoot. But .8 is a lot longer! Pretty much everyone has a catch and shoot faster than that.
― Matt Armstrong, Tuesday, 12 May 2020 22:58 (five years ago)
That Trent tucker shot was QUICK, admittedly. Probably right at .3.
― Matt Armstrong, Tuesday, 12 May 2020 23:00 (five years ago)
wikipedia says they used studies done in Europe, where they'd been using the tenths game/shot clock for awhile already. but yeah dude had a super quick release.
― A True White Kid that can Jump (Granny Dainger), Tuesday, 12 May 2020 23:19 (five years ago)
so many slow game clock stops throughout a half add up to at least a few seconds of unfairly lost time. we need chipped balls and computer vision to be sure who wins a ball game.

I am guessing there were several closers in the 90s and 00s who made it clear they wouldn't come out before the 9th, especially when contracts have dumb clauses about how "50 saves" earns you another few million and your arm can go at any point
still to do it during a playoff game is just nuts, I cannot believe Scottie saying he wouldn't change a thing, wtf
― frogbs, Wednesday, 13 May 2020 17:14 (five years ago)
the baseball stuff was fascinating, wish they'd spent more time on that. kinda respect Michael for actually doing it, after teasing everyone for a couple years that he was done. can't imagine how crazy that must've been to live through as a Bulls fan, outside of LeBron's Decision I can't think of anything even remotely close to that. otoh walking away after winning 3 straight titles still feels crazy to me, at that point you're not quite cemented as the best player ever and I find it hard to believe that MJ really couldn't find the 'motivation' to win another title, wtf

always wanted to see that, guess now is the time
was the general consensus that Jordan could've made the majors had he gotten another year to work at it? obviously 32 is pretty old for a debut but clearly the man was still in shape

No. But he was said to be making "progress". Particularly in the Fall league just before the strike happened when he played for the Scottsdale Scorpions.

I remember it was announced during a White Sox playoff game that he was gonna retire. Think he had thrown out the 1st pitch for it? Just total shock and sadness. Difficult to believe and process. Not only had just 1 3rd in a row, but he was in his prime! A lot of ppl thought it was just a reaction to his father's murder and he'd "snap out of it".

Going back to our earlier "is it helpful to be a psychopath and if not which players were able to pull it off and be competitive" conversation, Dave Zirin suggests Bill Russell.https://www.thenation.com/article/culture/last-dance-espn/
Jordan was pure capitalism: expanding his brand off the court, and a cutthroat bully with his own team. Russell was pure resistance: finding love and solidarity among teammates and fiercely holding onto his sense of self off of the court. His white teammates who didn’t show him solidarity, particularly on Russell’s proud struggles against racism, still loved him then and feel guilty today that they didn’t do more. One gets the feeling that the only regrets Jordan’s teammates have is that they didn’t stand up to him more and instead let him break their will. Russell had teammates who became his brothers for life. Jordan has generated only wary respect and resentful awe. The only people who “ride or die” for Jordan are personal assistants, trainers, and bodyguards: people paid to be in his presence. If The Last Dance had courage, it would be a cautionary tale instead of a hagiography. It would not only explore the price of greatness, or whatever such branded nonsense. It would be a warning: You don’t need to act this way if you want to win. It’s actually antithetical to what’s best about sports. You can get away with being the bully when you’re the best player on the planet. But being able to bully someone is not the same as a justification to do so. It’s exercising power over someone just for the sake of doing so. That’s not admirable. That’s abusive.

he shouted at teammates and was probably unpleasant to be around at times, and probably fun at other times, let's not pretend he traumatised a bunch of athletes for life or something.

― A True White Kid that can Jump (Granny Dainger), Wednesday, 13 May 2020 21:27 (five years ago)
i think almost all the alltime greats prob did it w being less of a jerk than jordan not trying to condemn the man or nothin but obvs he was just being an ahole and reveling in it, i mean it mightve been necessary for his process but being that level of jerk is clearly not necessary for or even conducive to athletic achievement in general, being a mild to moderate asshole is obvs common amongst bigtime ballers tho
― lag∞n, Wednesday, 13 May 2020 21:28 (five years ago)
i think it's clear jordan's relentless badgering bordered on abusive. frankly watching this doc is slightly claustrophobic for me - jordan's seething, needling, bullying neediness. it's everywhere. he's like a balloon ready to pop. and there are a lot of episodes. it's a really heavy dose. the idea of actually being around that all the time, being the target of that - yikes. when he hands a teammate (who?) some tickets to the game and asks if they need to be good seats, and the guy says 'naw, they can be up next to god' and jordan's like 'you can tell em god gave em to ya' where the joke is that jordan is god - it's like ffs. this comparison's slightly ott but it's a little like how trump manages to make everything about him. you can feel his energy from three planets away. you can't just practice in peace. i love when they ask scottie how the next year was, after mj retired the first time and he breaks into this big grin. 'it was great.'
― Li'l Brexit (Tracer Hand), Wednesday, 13 May 2020 21:32 (five years ago)
xp I think this is unfortunately the case more often than not w the "all time greats" in most any field, or among musicians painters writers filmmakers etc anyway

― lag∞n, Wednesday, 13 May 2020 21:37 (five years ago)
Haven't felt any of what tracer describes watching this doc tbh. The most disturbing/ holy shit thing to me was his off season/space jam workout and practice regimim. How did he not die?
― oscar bravo, Wednesday, 13 May 2020 21:41 (five years ago)
I mean he says that he never asked his teammates to do anything he himself wasn't doing but even if you negate talent it's prob not feasible for 99.9% of actual humans to work that hard.
― oscar bravo, Wednesday, 13 May 2020 21:43 (five years ago)
And he doesn' t see that cos as far as he' s concerned why can' t they? There's nothing stopping them.
― oscar bravo, Wednesday, 13 May 2020 21:45 (five years ago)
this may be just the fact that i have consumed a fair amount of jordan being an asshole content in the past speaking but in the doc all of his teammates even the ones who were defending him acknowledged that he was being a noteworthily huge asshole
― lag∞n, Wednesday, 13 May 2020 21:57 (five years ago)
as for individual acts yeah a lot of it isnt really that bad but i think its more that hes doing it all the time hes browbeating people, havent finished the latests eps not sure if punching teammates has been covered
― lag∞n, Wednesday, 13 May 2020 21:59 (five years ago)
this idea that he was doing it purely to motivate ppl is obvs ridiculous, hes styling on his teammates owning the hell out of them cause he can and he likes it, and i mean it is sports but long story short yeah prob pretty unpleasant to be around

this is prob going to sound weird but hearing MJ talk about his mindset helped me understand my Mum - wrt sports as a kid. She was super competitive, natural talent at everything & won basically every game she played bc she had that deep will to win. she would try to push me to compete harder in tennis or netball etc & i just didnt want to, bc i wasnt competitive & sport was just something to do. We fought so hard about it!!But I kinda see that she had that same MJ mindset even though it was crazily misplaced on me lol Doesnt change anything but the new perspective is interesting

VegemiteGrrl nice post, I mean I'm like your mom in this regard, though I rarely call my kids out on it in MJ ways when I think they're slacking, but I drive myself in the MJ way and sometimes *want* to hold others accountable when they're not putting in the same effort. I'd guess this is pretty common & is maybe what separates the "Mamba Mentality" from MJ's.
I got asked a few years to be on a panel discussion at my son's middle school, with other "successful" members of the school community, and there was a question from the moderator about who you model yourself after. the other people were like "my mom" etc & I said MJ, and explained basically what we've been talking about, about his insane drive & (kinda) his dickness & the students just went wild for the first time during the whole otherwise boring time. I looked at the other panel members like they were all Craig Ehlo and walked away.

it's fun seeing fat jordan and reliving some of those games but mainly for me it's that footage. most of what any of us have ever seen of jordan is SD-quality video of games.. and here comes this HD, slo-mo, pinpoint sharp, perfectly exposed footage not only of the games but the locker rooms, hotel rooms, buses - it's extraordinary
― Li'l Brexit (Tracer Hand), Thursday, 14 May 2020 09:34 (five years ago)

Still have a couple of episodes to go--there's a bit of a delay in Canada.
Re Jordan's competitiveness...When that journeyman player had the great game, and Jordan made up that story where the guy said "nice game" to him so he could motivate himself via anger and revenge--which then broadened out to Jordan's habit of doing that as a matter of routine--it reminded me of a certain president whose name I won't infect this thread with, the need for a perceived enemy to function. Obviously there's a world of difference there as to the ultimate goal, but that did cross my mind.
― clemenza, Thursday, 14 May 2020 13:50 (five years ago)
I don't think it's that uncommon a thing--Dylan more or less operated the same way in 1965. The end result can be "Positively 4th Street," an NBA title, or making fun of a disabled reporter--depends how you use it.

Mark Pope, playing his rookie year for Bird
The first preseason game at home was one of the worst/greatest experiences of my entire life. Clearly in a million years I don't belong with this group, right? We're playing Cleveland. I'm playing pretty good. I haven't embarrassed myself and he doesn't check me out. Every timeout I'm thinking, "Surely he's going to put in a real player now." But he didn't.On the last play, I inbound and clear out to the weakside. Reggie drives baseline, and as soon as he does, I'm thinking, This is not good. Reggie throws the pass and I catch the ball. Of all the people in this arena, I'm the one guy who should not be shooting this shot. I kind of peed my pants. I was wide open but I shot-faked. I shot-faked no one because there was nobody there. I actually shot-faked the air and drove middle and it rimmed out. And we lost the game. The next day at practice I'm stretching in the corner and Coach Bird walks over to me. He's my hero, right? He says, "Hey what happened last night?" I gave him some baloney answer about thinking I could get into the lane and get a better shot. He said, "I don't blame you, I blame me. Because I should have known better than to have you in the game." It was the worst thing anybody has ever said to me.

It's not as if my classmates were like, "Wow, this is an exact 1:9 clay replica of Ron Harper" (we were in Pistons territory anyway), but there was some likeness past jersey specifics. A casual NBA follower could probably tell by the shoulders that it wasn't Hot Rod Williams or Brad Daugherty.

this is an aside but i have few tailgating stories so i'll share this one--many years ago i attended an offseason friendly match featuring celtic fc vs. liverpool in connecticut. i went with my friend and his brother who were both hardcore celtic supporters and hardcore liverpool haters (as they also supported everton in the premier league). i had no emotional stakes in any of this, just wanted to have a nice time.
so we show up to the stadium and park next to these liverpool fans who have a beautiful setup, with grills and a bunch of meats and tasty-looking things. because we are dirtbags barely removed from college the only thing we have is an 18-pack of coors light. the disparity is obvious to anyone looking. the liverpool fans are very nice and ask us if we want any food, but we are obligated to reject them and sullenly drink coors light. i have no idea what we actually ate or even if we did eat. anyway, the evening progressed from there.

The NBA will do one as it will get hyped huge , but he f-in Kobe/Shaq Lakers don't deserve a documentary like this one. That team got so many wins by screwed up calls, people literally thought the NBA was having the refs throw down the game. The worst was the couple against the Kings, but there was wack calls in the Portland and Indiana series too.
That crap and the phantom fouls the Knicks got against the Pacers pretty much when I checked out following the NBA on any regular basis.

― Clay, Tuesday, 19 May 2020 21:46 (five years ago)
From the beginning it was clear that the series was leading up to The Shot but once we got there I was underwhelmed. Maybe because we’d seen so many other actual buzzer-beaters with more of a backstory to them - Jordan dishing to Paxson to win “the right way”, Kerr’s shot that established him as a postseason rock, Kukoc’s shot that Pippen thought should have been his, etc. Or maybe I’m just irritated at the likes of Costas mythologizing this shit in real time during the broadcast.

im all in no old jordan rumors now
During what van Gundy called "Camp Con" before Jordan made his comeback to the NBA he was playing a kind of summer league invite with a bunch of players and one of the players invited was Ron Artest. Jordan played his "let me see what this guy is made of" game with Ron Artest, who wasn't on his team, went Rotweiler on Jordan, jumped him and started whaling on him. Breaking a few of Jordan's ribs in the process. Jordan was competitive but Artest was gheto. That said, Artest didn't show the same fierceness when he was challenged by Ben Wallace. He wasn't really a tough guy, he was just against players smaller than him. I have a lot more respect for the "I dont' care how big you are, I'll fight you anyway" attitude, that Nate Robinson has. . . and Artest didn't have that kind of fearlessness, but he was a bad-ass and Artest was the guy who broke Jordan's ribs. I'm pretty sure that's been reported several times now, but it wasn't reported at the time.
― lag∞n, Tuesday, 19 May 2020 23:14 (five years ago)
Sam Smith, in ""The Jordan Rules"" wrote that Jordan had no respect for Cartwright, told his teammates to keep the ball away from Cartwright in crucial late-game situations (even if coach Doug Collins called a play involving Cartwright), and bellittled the veteran publicly. Cartwright confronted Jordan:
Excerpt: He didn't do or say anything to anybody until late that season, when he told Jordan he needed to talk to him.
There was little small talk exchanged. "I don't like the things I've heard you saying about me," Cartwright told Jordan.
Jordan stared at him.
"If I ever hear again that you're telling guys not to pass me the ball," Cartwright continued, "you will never play basketball again."
That was it. But as Cartwright began to move better after surgery following the 1989-90 season, Jordan began to accept him more.

I have watched through episode 8. Still great. Even my wife is enjoying it. Love the recurring theme of psycho Jordan taking slights/perceived slights and turning them into motivation, including his present-day rude dismissal of his peers. Even comparing a HOFer like Drexler to him was offensive to Jordan. And poor Dan Majerle. Also that rookie that scored 37 on him in the regular season and then Jordan torched him the next game for 36 in the first half.
One interesting scene was when present-day Jordan asks to stop the interview asking him how hard he was on his teammates. It almost seemed like he was reflecting on or realizing how much of a dick he had been and got emotional about maybe the cost of it, but that seems at odds with his personality and the way he generally seems to have stuck to his guns throughout the documentary in all of the present-day interviews.
It made me wonder if Jordan has ever gone through therapy or if he would just be impervious to it.

― Matt Armstrong, Wednesday, 20 May 2020 14:40 (five years ago)
I’ve always thought it probably contributed to the knee injury MJ had the first year
that seems at odds with his personality and the way he generally seems to have stuck to his guns
public personality vs private personality. haven't seen that part (I'm on ep#4), but I'm guessing his mask dropped there briefly. Hence ending the interview so he could put it back on.

1st time I was ever allowed to be on my own in Chicago was going to 2nd Championship celebration in Grant Park. Took the train in, just me and my friend. By the time we got there was already an enormous swarm of people. Never seen that many people in person before or since. Had to climb up on base of lightpost just to get a glimpse of them on the stage wayyyy in the distance. Crazy how parsimonious Reinsdorf was (is!!) when you think about Bulls going from getting outdrawn at Chicago Stadium by the friggin indoor soccer team to being the most popular sports club in the world in less than a decade. If eventually the Bulls and White Sox have different owners, I wonder if Sox would be able to make it w/o Bulls subsidizing them (btw if you ever want to get an authentic Chicago experience, go to a Sox game instead of Cubs. The accents you'll hear are alone worth the price of admission).

Just like we took what we saw watching NBA guys growing up and took it to a new level, current players are playing at a base level well beyond ours. ― Matt Armstrong, Wednesday, 20 May 2020 22:38 (five years ago)
In the 80s seikaly probably is considered a superstar for a while but in the 90s people thought he was just a stat padder
these conversations are crazy-making, obviouslyy if you zapped Babe Ruth c. 1927 into today's game he'd be toast, but "if he were alive today" he'd be up to speed on the modern game, conditioned differently etc., and he would dominate.

The league has a lot of stars. The best player on the 11th best team is generally considered a star player. In my world, a superstar is more like a consensus top 5 player in the league over at least five consecutive seasons, the type of player kids everywhere idolize and pretend to be, whose jersey still gets worn by fans a decade after they retire. -- I know Karl Malone was famously quiet, but I'm surprised with all the time that had passed there was no interview
-- I loved that one thing Phil Jackson said when Rodman disappeared again during the '98 Finals; "It's not a distraction for us, it's a distraction for you"
-- god, the NBA was low-scoring in the late '90s; I know the 3-point shot hadn't taken off yet, but what happened?

All in all, really glad I spent the 10 hours on this. I think two things above all else make it successful: 1) Lots of time given to Jordan's teammates and coach--Pippen most of all, but also Jackson and Rodman and Kerr. (I knew about Kerr's father from I book I read last year on the Warriors' rise). I don't think you could come away from this complaining "Hey, Jordan didn't win all those titles by himself." 2) It allows you to make up your own mind about Jordan. As I wrote in my first post, he never seemed guarded to me, for better or worse. All the things that drove him--the grudges, real and imagined, and the dismissiveness of other players that creeps in sometimes--they're all there. It mostly stayed clear of race after the Harvey Gantt/Nike flare-up--there's more in a single line from Do the Right Thing, when Spike Lee reminds John Turturro that Michael Jordan is his favourite player--than in all of The Last Dance, but that didn't feel like a glaring absence. I don't know if it's an absence that says more about Jordan or the filmmakers
I was wondering what other sports subjects might support something equally ambitious. The most obvious one to me would be Tiger Woods, a rise and (spectacular) fall and rise-again story like nothing else (with, at least for the first part of the story, a dramatic foil in Phil Mickelson). The key would be getting Tiger to let down his guard (and assuming there's actually a there there worth opening up on--hard to tell sometimes).
I don't know anything about football--the Brady/Belichick/Patriots dynasty?
It's almost impossible to sustain a modern-day baseball dynasty like the Bulls had, with the exception of the Joe Torre Yankees. But there's no figure compelling enough there to hold the center of the story the way Jordan does. (Sorry, Derek Jeter.) The Braves had an even longer dynasty, but coming away with exactly one championship rules them out, unless that becomes the story itself. I think you'd have to go back to the Robinson Dodgers or Stengel/Mantle Yankees for a subject that might be up to it.
The Federer/Nadal/Djokovic might be worth something equally lengthy, but I don't know how interesting those guys are off-court. Serena Williams is interesting enough, but her dominance might pose a problem dramatically.
― clemenza, Thursday, 21 May 2020 17:14 (five years ago)
i wouldn't mind seeing ten hours on Madden's years with the Raiders. I wonder how many of those guys are still alive.
― Fuck the NRA (ulysses), Thursday, 21 May 2020 17:30 (five years ago)
tiger is m/l the only other one i think can compare. plenty of other teams/players that could use a 1-4 hour documentary but not ten hours worth.
― Spottie, Thursday, 21 May 2020 17:33 (five years ago)
the problem with golfers is they never really retire
― Spottie, Thursday, 21 May 2020 17:34 (five years ago)
The dramatic tension is generated by Darths Krause and Reinsdorf actively working against their own squad - I don’t think there is a comparable story, at least not with someone with MJ’s dominance and influence at the centre of it
― Li'l Brexit (Tracer Hand), Thursday, 21 May 2020 17:36 (five years ago)
Charley Finley's Oakland A's could totally justify ten hours

I guess one with Tom Brady is already in the works and it's absolutely gonna suck
yeah see somewhere in the 10 hours they could've mentioned that
― frogbs, Thursday, 21 May 2020 17:41 (five years ago)
Read a really good book on them--their dynasty was short, but in many ways they are the most interesting potential baseball subject of the past 50 years (with the parallel story of free agency).
― clemenza, Thursday, 21 May 2020 17:50 (five years ago)
The Braves had an even longer dynasty, but coming away with exactly one championship rules them out, unless that becomes the story itself.
Dumb idea. Greg Maddux is one of my favourite players ever, but watching him shrug his shoulders for 10 hours might not make for compelling television.

not sure what the audience for this is outside of Pats fans. Brady is just not a compelling figure at all, the Pats dynasty is extremely boring and marred with stupid cheating scandals, and the vast majority of the country actively cheered for them to lose. plus being buddy buddy with Trump prolly ain't gonna help sell this
― frogbs, Thursday, 21 May 2020 17:58 (five years ago)
I didn't know there'd been a divorce either. I'm guessing his wife had more control over her absence from the documentary than Jordan did, to the extent she could block any mention of her whatsoever.
― clemenza, Thursday, 21 May 2020 18:03 (five years ago)
in my reading on jordan i don't get the sense that she played into any of the significant moments in his career, and wouldn't have any interesting perspective on them, even if they did have a relationship, which they do not.

http://www.thesun.co.uk/sport/11650721/michael-jordan-wife-yvette-prieto-the-last-dance-netflix/
But some fans have been left confused why Yvette doesn't contribute to the series.
As it turns out, director Jason Hehir didn't believe that interviews with Jordan's wife, ex-wife or children would benefit the documentary.
He told The Athletic: "I wasn't interested in the opinion of any wife or kids in this.
"We had the storytellers we wanted and I felt like we had the story covered from every angle."
I guess he changed his mind on the kids at some point.
― clemenza, Thursday, 21 May 2020 18:16 (five years ago)
I'm thru epi 6 and thought there'd be a lot more of that "all access" footage, based on what I'd heard about the doc. Also hasn't been as much of the current Jordan interview(s) as I expected.

The cheating scandals are super interesting and he’s extremely involved with one of them. Also he’s the greatest football player of all time.
true but they were covered nonstop while they were going on and I can't see Brady signing off on a doc that even hints that he might be guilty so I would guess they'll just be papered over or framed as a challenge Brady had to overcome
I agree he's the best ever, in fact his legacy is maybe even more impressive than Jordan's since football dynasties are more difficult due to injuries and single-elimination playoffs and he managed to do it twice while being one of the oldest players in the league. But Patriots football isn't really that fun to watch, most of their deep playoff runs involved them getting a bunch of timely breaks vs. way more interesting teams, plus they just so happen to be the least-penalized team during the playoffs by a wide margin. More importantly virtually everyone outside of MA rooted for them to lose, nothing like the Bulls where almost everyone around the world was a fan

This was Jordan's project, right? Seems a little petulant. I only dipped in and out of the story as it was happening, in the 1990s, but I didn't feel the film was unfair to Pippen, or any less fair than you would expect knowing it's Jordan's project. You can adjust as necessary.

At the end of the interview, I said, “Hey, tell me something. Did you have to ask Michael permission to talk to me?” And the guy kind of stammered a little bit. And he said, “Well, we actually did ask him if it was O.K.” And I said, “Well, what’d he say?” He said, “I don’t give a fuck who you talk to.” The way I understood it is, he didn’t say whether they could or could not. They weren’t sure whether they should.I thought the documentary was more “based on a true story.” I think there was a little bit of drama put into it. It was Michael’s story. It wasn’t a journalistic documentary, per se. And it shouldn’t be. He never told his story before. People never heard it from his standpoint, and that’s what it was.Do you feel like you understand him better from it?No.

No.
I had extraordinary access that doesn’t exist anymore, in any form. You can develop relationships. Media guys still develop the relationships. But these men and women who do that now have to produce something, like, every two hours. I would make other calls. I would check on things. I would hang out with players. The Bulls practiced in a public health club. I joined it as a member. So when they would lift weights after practice, I would be next to them. I wouldn’t lift weights, but I would be sitting with them. Now everything is privacy. The locker room was just open. For a 7 p.m. game, Jordan would come at, like, 3 p.m. or something, so I’d get there and just talk with him for three hours. Now you’ve got ten minutes with guys, if that. LeBron is celebrated for being one of the few in the whole league who comes out before the game and gives the media five minutes. Jordan gave everybody three hours.

After watching, I also feel like MJ is still a cipher. Maybe there's just no "there" there. "MJ" devoured "Mike Jordan".

30 years ago today Bulls won 1st championship. I was 13 yrs old. Blows my mind that for a 13 yr old today the 1st 3 peat Bulls are as ancient as the Russell Celtics were to me.

Great "and I took that personally" game. I can't find the details but Gerald Wilkins apparently told the media before series began that he would lock down MJ. "Tough night for the Jordan stopper" MJ said after the game.
