I totally missed Avery Bradley is on the team now

he might not make the final roster. everyone is hoping its gary payton II. bradley has looked bad in the minutes ive seen him and hasnt looked good in a few seasons really

My understanding is: Payton is signed for this season so they'd have to eat the money for this season if they waive him. Bradley is on an exhibit 10 which they could convert to a 2-way even if they keep Payton. If they cut Payton they'd have to have him pass through waivers to sign him to a two-way.

actually, bradley is ineligible for a two-way due to service time, so he would have to be a straight up g-leaguer

hmm. i think they should roll w GP2. Obv if AB was even like 80% of what he was he would be better but I like the idea of a real defensive ball hawk that's young and hungry to prove himself.

when i look at the warriors i say a lot of the stuff theyre doing seems unsustainable but then i also say they have klay coming back

whats unsustainable? currys having his worst shooting season and they are winning. wiggins 3p% might drop a bit but i'd imagine that would coincide with currys coming back up to normal.

Yeah I posted just after reading that! I love JP3. And GP2, for that matter!

warriors were a good team the last 3rd of last season.. but there are some big differences between this season and last:

- warriors committed to winning from the start and not forcing minutes for young/bad players
- draymond didnt start the season with covid complications and has been playing like playoff draymond on a nightly basis
- poole continuing to play like he did 2nd half of last season
- adding normal vets who fit the system bjelica, porter, iggy, gp2 and removing nico mannion, brad wannamaker, oubre, bazemore & mychel mulder

theyve got a bunch of dubious guys playing very well is how i break it down to an extent, like none of these guys bjelica, porter, iggy, gp2 are good, poole and wigdawg are ok players also playing out of their minds, but on the other hand they have klay coming back

i think they would as currently constructed without klay have a hard time scoring against a good playoff defense

i'm a little worried about steph and it's not a given that klay is going to come back and be awesome

i know ive said this a number of times but they should go allin with a trade for another guy, be willing to move any non core non kuminga player and any pick

and i dont think they should trade wigdawg, you want to bolster their success not radically change the team

he usually has a slump every year but this one seems to be sticking around a bit longer

steph is 33 entering the no more peak years guaranteed zone, klay is 31 and has been injured, draymond 31 with a game that relies on very high motor so to speak, i mean their core could keep rolling for another few years but could also easily not

their ideal trade is prob for a wing or guard who can create shoot and defend but guys like that prob arent available to them unless they want to really push a lot of chips in, which considering how well theyre doing they prob do not, however trading for one of indys centers does seem doable

our definitions of good may be different but all those guys are positive impact players and only wiggins is playing out of his mind (really just with his 3p shooting tho). porters always been this guy, his shooting numbers are on par with his career averages same w bjelica. gp2 isnt doing anything crazy, just playing great defense and cutting backdoor at the right time and hitting the open corner 3 on occasion. pooles shooting numbers are avg and could tick up going against bench units. iggy has missed half the season and is shooting 24% from 3. idk nothing seems like a major outlier to me.

they wont make any moves this season unless another injury happens

porter is theoretically the most legit player out of them but the thing with him is he just hasnt been healthy in like five years, idk if you told me all those guys were getting rotation minutes for a contender i would be skeptical

every contender has dudes like that tho.

warriors just have a lot of them, and theyre not a top heavy multiple mvp candidates team either

on a basic level this is just untrue tho.

top 8 in minutes last year:

curry
wiggins
draymond
oubre jr
wiseman
toscano-anderson
bazemore
poole

oubre, wiseman, and bazemore were all terrible for them and have all played zero minutes for them this year. toscano-anderson is a borderline NBA player and is tenth in minutes for them this year. so they've turned over half their rotation basically. dumping those guys and replacing their minutes w/ guys like igoudala and porter -- going from below average/actively harmful to average/actively useful -- is a huge change, and tbh it was evident in the first game they played this year (vs the lakers) that putting decent pros who can play their system was going to be a major difference for them. and poole has taken on way more minutes and is better than he was last year, he can make plays as a secondary scorer which they just didn't have last year, this is also pretty obvious to me.

now, whether they can win the finals, i think that's totally up for debate. personally i still have the bucks and nets at the front of the line and i'm not sure any of the west teams can beat either of them in a 7 game series. but i would put the warriors as currently constructed as the favorites to come out of the west. i wouldn't say huge favorites and they could not afford an injury to steph but they're back to playing death line up style warriors basketball again and there's a track record even pre-durant of that being a finals level team

completely stripped of context, no. but w/ the warriors absolutely. oubre shot 31% on 6 threes per game last year, he was flat out bad for them, couldn't hit a shot, was just not a good player. he's been much better this year in charlotte & has had better shooting years previously so maybe it was just a bad year but he just didn't seem to play their style, not really a high IQ player, has never totaled even 2 assists per game in his career. they're better off w/ iggy and porter style guys who can keep the offense moving & getting the ball to the right ppl. also porter is shooting 40% on threes this year, which is right in line w/ his career number. that shooting ability alone makes him >>>> than oubre for the warriors in the sense that they primarily need role players who can make open shots

Oubre seemed like a bad system fit. I remember him getting pulled a lot after bad swings.

every year teams like the warriors sign a bunch of minimum guys and they're all crapshoots--this year the warriors have gotten insanely lucky to have a bunch of those guys work and stay healthy so far. another reason to upgrade this year's team.

My big question is whether Wiseman will ever be good. I'm not sure he has the mean disposition that is usually needed in a big man.

i'm actually stunned that oubre's career high in assists per game is 1.6, which happened four years ago. lol. like, i never thought of him as a distributor but damn.

i just think it's hard to overstate how obvious it was lsat year that steph was a one man offense and how different that is from this year

the thing is all those bench guys as mentioned before are just not that good, the fit might be better but i mean adding some guy who struggled to get minutes in sacramento, a guy whos had a fork in him so long the fork fell out, and a guy who hasnt been healthy in five years generally doesnt take you from bottom third to top five offensive team, which is why i think its unsustainable, tho there was def an aspect of them running cold/having bad luck last year so they prob werent actually that bad, but still just on talent theyre pretty clearly playing over their heads so far

also worth noting this is the no 1 defense in the NBA by a full point in defensive rating. no 4 offense, no 1 defense, championship pedigree on the roster and w/in the organization, top 3 offensive player in the league, top 3 defensive player in the league, good role players, i wouldn't overthink this in terms of considering them a genuine title contender

well you're focusing on porter iggy and bejilica but biggest thing is really the emergence of poole and there's nothing much that you can say about that other than he's a first round pick who has developed into a really useful scorer for a team that desperately needed someone else who could do anything w/ the ball to scare the defense. i don't think there's smoke and mirrors there it's just a major player development win for the organization. the rest is mostly just replacing bad players/bad fits w/ good fits who don't hurt you

the trade that i would be trying to make if i was the warriors would be wiseman, moody, whatever other assets to indiana for sabonis and then re-routing sabonis to charlotte for hayward or toronto for siakam, or somewhere else to a team who needs/wants a good center under contract for another borderline all star level wing/big guard (jaylen brown?)

i said when we were talking about sabonis trades recently that if i was the warriors i'd def be trying to find an all star level wing or guard to ward against iggy and porter injuries, wiggins slumping, and/or poole having first time in the playoffs struggles. if they can trade players who don't play for them for a player at the hayward/siakam level i def think that they should do that.

all things being equal i think the suns prob smoke the dubs in the playoffs as things stand now, and theres still time for other west teams to get their acts together

in full knowledge of being trolled i will say that at age 25 jaylen brown is currently putting together his third straight allstar worthy season

i think the suns could beat them. if warriors have home court tho i would favor them.

suns are just so much more solid, it would be a ridiculous defensive battle but ultimately i think the suns could completely shut down the dubs where the dubs could only mostly shut down the suns, however if klay is back to his old self i prob like the dubs

i don't think the celtics will trade jaylen but if you were going to shake up the team sabonis would be a pretty good option, he's young, productive, signed for 2 more seasons, would prob be willing to extend there, re-orients the structure of the team. celtics would want some more stuff but i don't think it's crazy. trade rob williams for a PG or wing

all things being equal i think the suns prob smoke the dubs in the playoffs as things stand now, and theres still time for other west teams to get their acts together

the suns defense across the board def bothers the dubs to some degree, they can switch and have length, guys who can mess w/ steph. i see the argument. i also think the suns aren't an elite offensive team, against very good defenses there becomes tons of pressure on 37 year old chris paul to do a lot of work. we saw the cracks against the bucks. booker had to hit a bunch of really really hard shots to even keep them afloat. i think we do have to keep in mind that last year the suns went through a broken down lakers team, a nuggets team w/o murray and then a clippers team w/o kawhi. i think this playoffs will be a different kind of test for them.

the trade the celtics im sure are thinking about is getting ben simmons without giving up either jay, a three team deal something like a bunch of picks and al horf going to a third team, good player from third team and smart to philly

personally i still have the bucks and nets at the front of the line and i'm not sure any of the west teams can beat either of them in a 7 game series.

this seems insane to me given how the best 3 teams in the league this year are from the west

this is fair and might be a fatal flaw of theirs that said KD is arguably the no 1 playoff player right now and that has to carry a lot of weight. they may have won the title w/ harden on 0.5 hamstrings last year if they got past the bucks

the nets big 3 being healthy for the offs isnt out of the question at all, only one of the three thats fully injury prone is kyrie and hes had a lot of rest lol, tho the cause of that rest may actually put the title out of reach

kyrie is the one where you just never know if youre about to lose him for two weeks

i hear any argument against the nets that boils down to "this whole situation is too volatile and for 100 diff reasons i just don't see this resulting in a title." for me, i think last postseason went about as bad as could be expected for them in terms of injuries, outright losing kyrie and losing harden for a significant chunk and having him be severely hobbled and largely ineffective when he came back. but they handled it way better than i expected, i would have said they were dead in the water under those circumstances but they ended up taking the champs as close to the brink as you possibly could take a team. if their injury luck is in any way better than it was last year, that makes them dangerous to me, based on what we saw KD + crippled james harden + random guys do.

of course if they lose KD it's a wrap for them but that's true for any team that loses their best player in the playoffs for any significant amount of time

also they can't defend the perimeter at all it's actually quite a bad way to build a team for the playoffs can't just have guys knifing into the paint at will 50 times per game

it wouldn't shock me if the jazz came out of the west especially depending on how injuries shake out. but i don't think they can beat the bucks or the nets they just don't have the high end talent, imo, and are too exploitable based on how they're constructed, think that would be a pretty clean finals for either of the east teams

upgrading their perimeter defensive talent would definitely help but part of the problem there does imo go back to gobert in that in the modern game you want a center who has the ability to rotate out to the perimeter and gobert does not so they built this old fashioned D where everything is funneled to him in the paint which teams can render inoperative by going small, then as weve discussed they dont even have the strategic counter of gobert taking advantage of a small team by dunking on them on the other end since he has zero ball skills

the funny thing about the money ball nba era with all the high variance hoisting where over matched teams have a prayer is dunks are still dunks baby, shots that you shoot 99% on are very low variance, start letting teams get to the rim and you could play a hundred series and never win

stats guy: a bounce here and bounce there can swing a series between what are ultimately teams with razor thin edges

the jazz are basically a very nice sports car you only can drive in good conditions and they have an additional problem which is that there are almost no improvement candidates on their roster. donovan mitchell has been having basically the same season for a couple years now.

mitchell could still improve or just have a great year and theyd still need to solve the gobert problem which is unsolvable

prob the best approach to the gobert problem is to surround him with great dynamic defenders but unfortunately the jazz are very far from that

mitchell doesn't need to have better years than he's having for them to get high seeds. they're made to punish bad teams and collect regular season wins. and it could still work for a playoff run too with some health, matchup luck, a mitchell hot streak, etc. but they haven't made it easy on themselves by going all-in on very specific ways of playing offense and defense.

if they were to somehow draw four rounds of opponents decimated by injuries it wouldnt even count imo, much like the lakers bubble championship

the jazz *do* have a player in mitchell who can score against loaded up playoff defenses making crazy contested shots and can get to the rim/foul line. that's not nothing... he shot 43% on 11.5 threes per game last playoffs. the issue to me is that he's still not better at that than steph or booker, so even at the high end they get trumped by the dubs and suns, and those other teams are better constructed and more malleable than the jazz. they're in a tier below the suns and dubs for me who are prob in a tier below the east teams

kerr said he likes having steph klay poole out there together. the offense looks killer with those three. depending on what you need you can add any combination of dray / wiggs / otto / gp2 / moody / kuminga as the other two. once everyones healthy theres going to be some flexibility in those lineups, should be a lot of fun.

Biggest prob is Dray doesn’t look like playoff Dray. He started the season as the best version of himself and he’s just coming back and getting into shape. But that injury could affect him for a while. I still believe in this roster but the margin for error is thin and they’re gonna have a lot to figure out on the fly.

it's kind of a pointless way of talking about it to say that i know what moves could/should have been made but usually the 2nd and 7th picks can be exchanged for present value.

idk who they woulda or coulda got but theyve had assets to trade and havent done it. wiseman for sure, one of the picks from last year, this years pick, future picks. whatever. its not like they have to go full a vet team but carrying three rookies and another young guy that needs time to develop (poole) just shows they are more concerned (or at least equally concerned) with the future as they are with winning now and over the next couple years. and you gotta think the vets are a little hmmm about it all.

trying to not rebuild after winning a title is very difficult but the allure of it is pretty obvious -- it's the best of both worlds! -- and of course most front offices let alone one as successful as the warriors will think they'll be the ones who can pull it off. in all likelihood the warriors will not accomplish the twin goals of winning a title now and also setting themselves up to win a title in the future, i feel like you kind of have to accept that as a fan. but then again most teams are also currently neither going to win a title or set themselves up to win one in the future so it's not that unusual. the spurs tried to hang on after duncan retired and ended up in the rebuilding phase anyway. it's totally understandable why steph, iggy etc want them to trade everything to go all in this year, also understandable why the front office has a longer term view. i don't think anyone is really in the wrong here, just competing perspectives and priorities.

personally i have real doubts about whether wiseman had any value at the trade deadline, he was (is) hurt and hasn't played all year and wasn't that good when he did play. i'm sure teams were trying to buy low on him but the idea that the warriors could have acquired a game changing player w/ him as anything more than a secondary piece, i don't see it. i haven't seen much of moody personally, but i understand why they don't want to trade kuminga. he looks like he could help them in this year's playoffs while providing all the possible upside that comes after it.

also when you look at who actually moved over the deadline, i don't see anyone the warriors could have or should have been in on. caris lavert? sabonis? cj mccollum? norm powell? josh hart? we talked about sabonis previously and even if you think that fit made sense for them (i don't) i find it hard to believe they could've outbid the kings putting halliburton on the table. what the warrios could use imo is more wing players but the fact that guys like barnes and jerami grant didn't move seems like an indication that nobody in the NBA valued those guys at what those teams were asking for than any deficiency in the warriors plans.

i do also think that having some information about how well they do in the playoffs this year will be important to them. let's say they make it to the west finals or push phoenix to a game 7 in the second round and almost knock them off, they might be willing to push more in for next season seeing some proof of concept which this team doesn't actually have as far as the playoffs go. and kuminga and moody prob have more value now than they did even at the deadline. but if they lose in the first round i'm sure they'll be hesitant to do anything w/ their young guys

Sure, but has his value ever been higher? Probably not since his rookie year.

i don't know who in the NBA would really see wiggins as having value on his own given his contract. i think teams would find him an acceptable price to pay in order to receive other assets, but again that means if you're trading him there's a good chance you're losing the trade. the warriors prob understand this concept acutely

like i said earlier, i think this postseason will give them a lot of needed information about what to do moving forward that they haven't had in either of the last two seasons.

the idea that steph or the older era is being "disrespected" doesn't really scan for me. i mean, steph looked at the state of the franchise last summer and decided to sign a 4 year contract at a point when money is no longer an object to him. if the no. 1 most important thing to him in his career is winning a title he would've (or should've) looked elsewhere

i'm more sympathetic to iggy's point that it also does a disservice to the young players in terms of their development. i think for wiseman in particular it is a bad situation given that their second best player is a center and their system requires a high basketball IQ and he had only played like 3 games above high school before going there. but then again kuminga is fighting for minutes when everyone thought he was going to be a project so it would be hard to argue that his development is being stunted. it might just be up to the player.

i don't totally disagree with any of that but the fact remains that it's left them with the impossible task of threading together two different teams which we've talked about many times here. the wiseman pick, as it stands, is a disaster--i don't think anyone would have predicted this current state exactly but they took a developmental center in a bad draft and it's very hard for me to understand why they did that.

I can see the argument against drafting four teenagers. They could have drafted guys who were more NBA-ready but with less upside.

For what it's worth, the Warriors have four guys under 25 or younger. The Grizzlies have 4 guys on their roster OVER 25.

i think history tells you that this is basically inevitable to some degree anyway. any team that pushes for a title for so many years is going to have to build it back up from the bottom once those guys leave. but i also think the warriors will basically guarantee that happens if they trade most of their young guys to "maximize the window" around stpeh, klay and dray. so i think i see it the opposite way. if you want to go all in for the current core that's cool but once those guys age out you're basically guaranteeing that you start from scratch, which is what they're trying to avoid, for better or worse. and they might fail on both accounts (not compete for a title but also not be good enough to avoid a major rebuild after), so maybe they should just push everything to the middle for the next two years and swallow the rebuilding pill since in all likelihood it's going to come in some form anyway. i think if the warriors are superficial contenders -- safely in the playoffs w/ a chance to make some noise but unlikely to -- while developing some youth for the the post-steph era given what they've done in the last decade... idk. making steph curry games baseline watchable is still a pretty fine outcome to me.

i think the one aspect that could really alter their future and how they plan for it is if they think or come to understand that they will be major players in the free agency/star trade market in the post-steph/klay/dray era because of their location, willingness to spend, and recent history of success. can they basically become the junior lakers? i don't think it's out of the question. but if that's the case then you're basically never looking to rebuild, ever, and you go ahead push in w/ this core w/ the belief that once you have an opening on your roster for a new set of stars, those guys will want to come to you. i think the lakers tried to earnestly rebuild post-kobe w/ the lonzo, ingram etc group and decided, prob w/ good reason, that such a thing is for the birds. i could see the warriors ending up in much the same place.

they want to be seen that way but its yet to be seen if they can do it, of course.

yeah. the clippers w/ balmer & a new arena complicate matters but i think california can support three star driven teams. SF will never be LA but i don't see why the warriors couldn't get in there

Seems kinds crazy how much everyone is discounting the Warriors' chances in the playoffs. Am I just being a homer, or do we have a decent chance here?

its just a lot to figure out on the fly so the skepticism is warranted. currys health (and shot?), drays health, iggys health, where is klay at really, will poole be able to keep doing what hes doing with everyone back and less shots to go around, how do steph/klay/dray look back together (not too worried about this), which wiggins will we see, can looney/dray survive a deep playoff run as our only two defensive bigs. every team has questions of course but these are a lot.

having said that, they do have the highest ceiling of any team in the playoffs imo. they were the best team in the league for the first ~third of the season and that was without klay. plus poole has grown even more.

i just wouldnt be surprised with just about any outcome in these playoffs. i do expect them to beat the nuggets tho.

they are extremely rickety for the type of run you need to have to go deep in the playoffs. you need 7-8 guys who can play big minutes at a high level every other day.

Yeah, that was sweet especially with all the times Urey gets targeted on defense. I think Klay’s length bothered Ja’s last shot. But that was low key not a great game from Klay. He was 6 of 19 shooting and didn’t seem to be quick enough on defense (other than the final play).

all the post-game videos are about how the dubs defense gummed up the mavs offense (plus they missed a lot of open 3s). no doubt the mavs will make adjustments. but steph and klay will probably shoot better so, shrug, we end up in the same place?

pretty much everyone played B+ ball or higher for the dubs (except d lee, and klay really only in the 3rd) and no one played well for the mavs. the dubs d was sharp but the offense was even sharper, they kept the turnovers down. luka was really passive in spurts, he got all the way to the rim a few times then threw it away which was weird... more TOs than made FGs. the adjustments between game 1-2 should be interesting. trapping curry didnt work cos draymond and poole picked it apart and everyone was hitting. everything can change but the mavs defense didnt look nearly as sharp as the grizzlies, and they dont have anyone in the paint like JJJ/Adams so the dubs got a lot of points inside.

On the one hand, I don't want to see this homegrown team broken up over cap issues. On the other hand all these billionaires should be forking up the extra dough to compete. It's a bummer that none of that luxury tax $$$ goes to the players, though.

"Player sharing" is kind of a gross way of putting it too -- puts the focus on the team/management over the players.
