well dwight never really developed any actual skills and once him posting up stopped becoming even halfway useful he kinda became a zero on offense. he’s definitely one of the 75 best athletes in NBA history. probably one of the 75 best players too. but he was a beast for only like 5-6 years when he was at his athletic peak. once he left orlando he wasn’t the same, could still get lots of rebounds i guess

It seems like it's affecting Steph's game, too. Outside of the two games he's gone nuclear his shooting's been off. His FTs aren't taking a huge dip because that was never an integral part of his game. He definitely makes his share of non-basketball moves but this year those just either end up looking like standard risky Steph turnovers or wild shots, like that insane three he made a couple games ago. Glad he's not complaining about and just figuring out how to work with it.
I do wonder what the playoffs will look like if this trend in officiating keeps up.

harden's shooting numbers are down and he doesn't really pass the eye test based on what we imagine him to be but he's still putting up 21-8-10. and in december that's up to 23-8-11.

He just hasn’t been an all nba first team player. The eye test is important. He could get there by the end of the year.

i think if you sort by defense you see the issue with basing a stat off plus minus i mean it wants you to believe that the nuggets have 4 of the 16 best defensive players in the NBA, that jokic, looney and capella are all better defensive centers than gobert, that steph curry is a top 20 defender in the league etc. there is prob some degree of accuracy to what it spits out for offense as is true for all advanced stats but the flaws in the overall numbers are pretty obvious bcuz of the defense component i.e. it’s deflating gobert’s impact bcuz they upgraded at back up center by switching out favors for whiteside

i’m always saying moritz wagner is the third best offensive center in the NBA tho so me and RPM are aligned there

if you want to put stock in the plus-minus numbers at all, the overall number is going to be a lot more useful than the offense/defense splits. you’re halving the sample sizes for the components and thus there’s gonna be a lot more noise

its smart of him to only play like 1/3 of the games available every season to keep the mystery alive of how good he actually is. all the players reverence him like hes basketball god on earth. his reputation is built on a 3 game stretch in the '16 finals and, outside of that, hes done nothing but torch a couple franchises, sit out games and throw in some nice and1 highlights.

well, kyrie’s reputation as a basketball god is really built on the fact that he’s one of the best ball handlers of all time and is just extremely gifted at scoring in a variety of ways despite being tiny. he’s also one of the most creative finishers at the rim i’ve ever seen, again owing to his size. i don’t think it has anything to do with what he did in the finals, allen iverson won one finals game ever and is revered for being a tiny baller in much the same way (kyrie is a better player tho). kyrie is like the apex and 1 style player, breaking you down with magician level handles and spinning the ball off the glass like a wizard, but he can also take a similarly sized player into the post and hit the MJ/kobe style turnaround fadeaway that an entire generation of ballers was indoctrinated into thinking was the purest form of basketball

at the end of the day i think this is the kind of stuff that other players really respect. it’s the antithesis of, say, giannis, who got dissed by harden for being so freakishly athletic that he only needs a bare minimum of skill to be dominant. or to take it to its logical extreme, rudy gobert who has literally zero offensive skill and is widely disrespected by his peers despite being one of the best defensive players of all time. i think even w/ steph his peers saw his long range shooting as a kind of cheat code & it took him some time to really gain that respect, whereas when other players close their eyes and think of what would be the dopest thing to do on a basketball court, it’s basically the one on one genius and pure basketball skill of kyrie (for better or worse)

i think it’s true that he isn’t a number one option to carry you through the playoffs but i think that’s kinda true for like any guy that size. when was the last time a PG just carried his team to the title? pistons era isiah thomas or something? steph was a mold breaker in that way to some degree except he was so bad in the one finals that igoudala won MVP, then blew a 3-1 lead to a superhuman giant wing player, and then needed KD to help take his team over the line to dynasty status. chris paul needed harden to even get close to the finals & then needed booker and a whole great team around him to actually get there. so i don’t really hold it against kyrie, he def needs a bigger sized star next to him to really take a team to that level but so does almost any small guy

coming into the draft his shooting was supposed to give him a high floor but he started out the season shooting really poorly. it’s starting to normalize a bit now and if teams have to respect his three he’s gonna carve defenses up. he almost has a luka-ish energy in the speed at which he plays but with less annoying tendencies. putting up 23-8-6 on 44/36/90 splits in the month of march & you have to feel like those shooting numbers are only gonna get better.

i think it's fair to have questions about his ceiling as a no 1 scoring option but it's been pretty clear since he got in the league that his path was prob going to be something different than that. i think it's pretty clear if you watch him play that his game is not very similar to cole anthony or kemba walker. the FT rate stuff is probably something to watch but post-ASB he's at 22 ppg on 44/28 shooting and i think everyone agrees he's gonna be a better shooter than that so i have a hard time worrying a ton about his offense.

For decades NBA fans have been able to quickly find out which players lead the league in turnovers. This season, that honor belongs to Russell Westbrook, who has coughed up the ball 240 times.

But aside from steals, the NBA hasn't always tracked turnovers from the individual defensive side of things. Now it does.

The NBA stats department has begun keeping track of forced turnovers, which helps flag the defenders who cause the blunders that ruin possessions. This metric encompasses a lot more than just the traditional steals, which are convenient to tally but often don't paint the whole picture. Consider the example of VanVleet, whose defensive performances would go unappreciated without these newer and more comprehensive metrics.

According to the NBA's internal models, VanVleet is forcing a league-leading 3.0 turnovers per game this season, significantly higher than his 1.6 steals-per-game average. In fact, VanVleet is on pace to lead the league in forced turnovers for the third straight season.

For decades, we have leaned on steals as the best way to approximate this effect, but VanVleet's numbers this season show why that can be misleading. According to NBA estimates, of his 173 forced turnovers this season, only 34 were credited as a VanVleet steal -- 75 were credited as a steal by a different Raptor, and 64 were non-steal turnovers (out of bounds, violations, offensive fouls, etc.).

At 6-foot-1, VanVleet spends 30% of his time guarding the opposing ball handler, eighth most in the NBA. Despite his relatively slight size, he has an uncanny ability to blow up plays at the point of attack.
