lag∞n, Sunday, 14 November 2021 04:01 (three years ago)

i can report that holmgren does look very tall and thin

amazing that joe lunardi has carved out a career as a 'bracketologist'

i mean all you have to do is . . . look at the team records? maybe the kenpom? and if you're wrong on a bubble team, you can always blame it on some minor conference tournament upset

i respect the hustle, particularly when it involves writing mid-january stories about how kansas has fallen off the one-line(!)

bad year for the ACC. not sure UNC has a single NBA player on their team. even duke feels like a top 5 team by default more than anything. banchero might be the only NBA player on their team.

J0rdan S., Sunday, 6 March 2022 02:06 (three years ago)

if you root for an acc basketball team that isn't duke you're very well aware that coach k is notorious for berating the refs into leaning towards duke w/ his demonic vermin screaming that will never ever get T'd up because he is the one and only coach k

lag∞n, Sunday, 6 March 2022 02:33 (three years ago)

tbh i just think he pays a great deal of attention to the small shit

ten years ago i went to a duke fantasy camp (courtesy of an extremely loaded friend, because i can in no way afford that) and basically tore my acl the first time i touched the ball, which was embarrassing af

two weeks later he fucking called me to 'see how i was doing'

obviously he built up advantages (and presumably he thought i had more money to spend on him) but that's good recruiting

mookieproof, Sunday, 6 March 2022 02:34 (three years ago)

wow yeah that is some high level shit

lag∞n, Sunday, 6 March 2022 02:36 (three years ago)

that's impressive as hell, no argument from me

call all destroyer, Sunday, 6 March 2022 02:36 (three years ago)

yeah, that's impressive. even as the years went on he could still sell himself to recruits and their families, duke donors, the media, and nba players on team usa. lol, i guess seeing bob knight up close gave him good example of how not to do it.

Speaking of skinny kids, at LSU Pete Maravich stood 6' 5" and weighed 160. He still averaged over 40 ppg for each of his three years playing on the "varsity" team - with no three point shots either! This was back when college freshmen were not allowed to play with the big boys.

Good game. Probably one of the key plays was that bench guy from NC fouling before the guy from Duke could get the ball up or score a quick bucket and put him on the line. Dukey missed the second one and NC got the rebound and that was that. One of those time where fouling is the better option and kind of an odd play to be in some ways a decider considering how many big shots where hit. NC and Duke both missing a few free ones on the line. (After looking his name up...) Puff Johnson also got a board and hit a couple free throws while Bacot was nursing his ankle.

Kansas looks pretty tough, they are even bigger than Duke and NC got roasted in the paint tonight. Jayhawks were shooting darts from the 3 ball too.

avatár the way of watár (voodoo chili), Tuesday, 28 February 2023 03:22 (two years ago)

Back when I was at IU, they used to call the lower seats the ‘gray line’ as when they built the place you could get same season tickets year after year. They started getting good with Knight second year the building was built and pretty much all the lower tickets were all a bunch of older fans for 30+ years hence below the gray line.

It’s not that way now and the odd configuration of the building built to keep ice for the hockey club( long gone) makes it an unbelievably loud place to play hoops.

It’s got to be one of the toughest places to play these days.

xpost Merrimack is ineligible for the postseason for 4 years because they are transitioning from DII to DI. everyone hates the rule, but it's the rule. so FDU knew they were dancing when they won their conference semi.

Edey was fine last night - he let it get swatted away from him too many times, but overall, he was good. but FDU's gameplan + his so-so teammates + mounting pressure + Matt Painter's tactical paralysis killed them. Painter *had* to figure out a way to make it easier for them to get Edey the ball, and he didn't. Credit to FDU and their coach.

the miami-uconn game should be pretty good. miami’s starting 5 has the best net rating of any 5 man line up in the tournament but uconn has been the best overall team. uconn has a number of potential first round picks and miami plays a very NBA style of ball. if miami wins i may pass out, i was a regular fixture at their games dating back to when they played in the miami arena (25% filled)

lag∞n, Saturday, 6 April 2024 23:09 (one year ago)

Mark Eaton had a good NBA career, but the modern NBA is not kind to players who resemble him. Watching Edey I'm sure he has more skills than Tacko Fall did and he can probably find a niche somewhere, but I, too, doubt he'll be a starter unless he keeps developing year after year during and beyond his rookie contract. His height & size won't give him nearly as much of an advantage as it has in college.

more difficult than I look (Aimless), Saturday, 6 April 2024 23:09 (one year ago)

just doesn’t seem like he moves well. and he’s about to turn 22 already it’s not like he’s getting more athletic

brony james (k3vin k.), Saturday, 6 April 2024 23:14 (one year ago)

he’s gonna be the heaviest person in the nba as soon as he’s drafted, which is something.

he’s not a great defender, despite his size, and he can muscle his way to the hoop and draw fouls, but he’s not gonna be officiated the same way in the league. i don’t really see it with him, maybe he can stick as a bench big

the defenestration of prog (voodoo chili), Saturday, 6 April 2024 23:17 (one year ago)

Hard to identify an elite skill he could bring with him right away. He'd have to develop further if he's ever going to stick.

Edey does have some touch at the line. It probably depends on the team. Kenny Smith was saying a coach might try to use him as a change of pace type player and maybe try a traditional inside game setup.

Guy at work who is a big time NBA follower said to me the modern spacing will kill him as they will just drive past him as he too slow to stop them.

Iowa came out hot as blazes, torched SC in the first quarter and built a 12 point lead, but since then it's been all SC pounding the boards and outscoring Iowa by about 16. I think that second quarter provides the better clue as to what the second half will look like. South Carolina's rebounding, bench depth and all around athleticism seems unbeatable unless Clark goes nuclear.

lag∞n, Monday, 8 April 2024 12:20 (one year ago)

guess its obvious tho i had not considered it since i dont really consider college ball but the ease of transferring these days makes it much easier to build good teams around upperclassmen

The NCAA tournament losses, one Big Dance win since 2019, refusing to embrace the transfer portal and continuing to build freshmen-focused rosters -- it all added up to a frustrated fan base.

https://www.espn.com/mens-college-basketball/story/_/id/39898367/what-means-kentucky-john-calipari-moving-arkansas-new-head-coach-whos-next

lag∞n, Monday, 8 April 2024 15:04 (one year ago)

Frustrated fan-base member here. This is good for everyone involved ... Kentucky, which saves a $33 million buyout ... and even Cal, who lands at a top 10? 15? college basketball job at a school with national championship pedigree/aspirations and at least one booster (Cal's pal the Tyson chicken family) willing to pony up to get there. The past 5 years have been a failure at UK, but I don't think anyone could characterize his full run there as a failure.

One nitpick on lagoon's point: Yes, he has continued to recruit one and dones and he built this year's team around them ... but it's not like he has shunned the transfer portal. The team that lost to St. Peter's two years ago was the oldest team in the country and included transfers from Iowa, Georgia, Davidson, Rhode Island and Creighton ... and they flamed out, too.

It's very clear that roster construction has changed in college hoops and Cal didn't adjust enough. But there are other/bigger issues at play with regard to how they've ended their seasons since 2019.

alpine static, Monday, 8 April 2024 17:10 (one year ago)

US college sports 'boosters' are mostly very horrible people, and in their pursuit of winning teams they've dumped tons of money on some very horrible coaches with Bobby Knight being the poster child. It's hard to have any sympathy at all for the coaches who embrace the system and reap the biggest rewards.

Let's name jobs better than Arkansas, understanding this is of course subjective:

Kentucky
Carolina
Kansas
Duke
Arizona
UCONN
Michigan
Michigan State
Texas
UCLA
Southern Cal (I guess)
Villanova
Louisville and (especially) Indiana are like Marty McFly's siblings fading away in that photo at the end of Back To The Future

that's 14, but i'm not so sure a coach leaves Arkansas for Indiana.

we're talking history, of course, and resources, nearby recruits, etc. i don't have enough info on NIL programs to consider them.

Zags? Houston? Virginia? Maryland? Ohio State? we're getting into dicey territory.

In addition to the Tyson chicken family, Arkansas has a *ton* of money it can tap into, and it *cares* about being good at basketball.

alpine static, Monday, 8 April 2024 19:16 (one year ago)

Florida, maybe.
Syracuse? Not imo. But I suppose some people would think so.
Illinois if you can get Chicago kids.

I might've underrated Maryland and Ohio State.

two weeks pass...

the Lady Vols’ new head coach Kim Caldwell has this extreme rotation philosophy of subbing all 5 players out every 1.5 - 2.5 minutes. and she sticks to it. i just witnessed it in person today for the Vols’ thrashing of non-ranked Winthrop. what’s crazy about it is that not only is everyone getting subbed off every couple of minutes, everyone is full-court pressing 100% of the time. because they have fresh legs. Winthrop were hail-marying passes just to get it up the court. apparently some players were initially unhappy with the scheme because they thought their stats would go down but most players’ ppg etc have gone UP because the whole team is playing faster, harder, generating more looks. It’s a little weird to watch but it is working. they’re averaging 98.8 ppg as a team playing 10-minute quarters and are so far undefeated - though admittedly most games before the new year are kind of a warm-up

Humanitarian Pause (Tracer Hand), Monday, 30 December 2024 03:48 (five months ago)

fwiw, I often wonder why, in games that are extremely close and hard fought so they go into OT or 2OT, coaches insist on keeping all their starters on the floor when both teams are clearly running on fumes. I keep thinking that subbing in two three fresh bench players against exhausted opponents could easily result in a blow out -- as long as your subs can normally deliver good minutes when they're called on in less extended games.

more difficult than I look (Aimless), Monday, 30 December 2024 04:13 (five months ago)

yes it only really works if you have 10 good players - which many teams don’t

Humanitarian Pause (Tracer Hand), Monday, 30 December 2024 04:16 (five months ago)

using a 10 player rotation and subbing in a complete unit of 5 players every couple of minutes only makes sense to me if your roster is about equally strong/weak all across the board. especially if they're all more 'just OK' than great, so that you're leaning on total energy expended to compensate for middling talent.

more difficult than I look (Aimless), Monday, 30 December 2024 04:34 (five months ago)

it would work better with better players imo

Humanitarian Pause (Tracer Hand), Monday, 30 December 2024 05:18 (five months ago)

(and UT’s players are very good)

Humanitarian Pause (Tracer Hand), Monday, 30 December 2024 05:18 (five months ago)

what i am trying to say is that i don’t understand yr idea that this would work better with mediocre players

Humanitarian Pause (Tracer Hand), Monday, 30 December 2024 06:04 (five months ago)

Most good college teams, if they're lucky, have 6 or 7 or maybe 8 good players. But the drop-off at some point is huge. If you ever have a chance, pay attention when a top team subs in their end-of-bench scrubs at the end of a blowout against an opponent that is overmatched but still has a few decent D1-level players. The difference between the D1-level players on the losing team and the end-of-bench scrubs on the winning team is often large and very obvious. The scrubs will struggle to move the ball at all against even mediocre hoopers, much less score or stop the other team from scoring.

Point being, if you don't have 5 guys that can hold their own at that level - meaning 10 average+ players on the roster - the weak spots are going to get *torched* even by tired players.

The best example of that idea working in recent memory was the 2014-15 Kentucky team that went 38-0 before losing in the Final Four. That team had 10 legit D1 players and John Calipari had to manage them all in a way that kept everyone relatively happy, so from the very beginning he committed to playing what he called a "platoon" system, essentially splitting games between two groups of five.

This is why future NBA stars like Karl Anthony-Towns and Devin Booker only averaged 21 minutes per game that season. No one on the team averaged more than 26 mpg, and nine different players averaged at least 16 mpg. Unfortunately, the 10-man plan was thrown slightly off-kilter when Alex Poythress - probably the eighth best player on the team - tore his ACL in the eighth game of the season. Cal still stuck with the platoon system, but he didn't have the easy two groups of five to make it work.

Crappy weather and no football in sight, so I watched quite a bit of college games yesterday.

Wisconsin as a fast break and 3 point shooting team is pretty wild considering how slow they played for decades. They shot the lights out against Purdue, which was not having a good game for them defensively but the Badgers hit some crazy sh!t.

UK games continue to be highly entertaining as Texas came from behind and held on to win last night. It was kind of a bubble game for UT, so they needed the win. Wildcats being down 2 starters, they just were running into a lack of shots hit and they are just bad on the boards. That Johnson for Texas is pretty good.

Auburn and Alabama was a full speed game. I think Auburn is better but they were getting banged up as the game went on and the Tide was able to get back in. Both teams are really good.

Incredibly grateful that I did not bother paying attention to the Illini this year after the entire team (save two players, one of whom red-shirted) turned over or transferred. Apparently there's been a key injury, but just looking at box scores, I can recognize that Underwood has lost yet another team and leaned on a few guys. With one kid supposedly coming in as a first round contender (from Lithuania via Barcelona, no less (haha cannot imagine spending last year on the Mediterranean only to chase your career dreams in central Illinois)) and coming off their best season in 20+ years, the early season record and rankings ~almost~ sucked me in. Have not yet seen Maryland to play, as I understand this years club might be an exception, but it is no wonder the Big 10 has not won a title in like 30 years considering their style of play STILL looks like it from the 90s, it is still so much slow ball set up try to push through the middle.

Because of proximity, I tend to watch more SEC games now and you see Auburn, Alabama, UK or heck even Tennessee or Texas or Arkansas - and they play really uptempo ball with some clubs being pretty much run and gun all the time. Watching OSU and IU play yesterday, lord what a slow paced game. Neither club has much shooting, Indiana really does not have any one that can shoot with any regularity and they look SLOW as hades.

this article about UNC's awkward transition to the transfer portal/NIL era kinda makes me hate college hoops in general

i guess it's good that players are getting a piece of the massive NCAA money? and obviously we've been in the one-and-done era for quite a while now. but universities acting like pro sports teams is gross

mookieproof, Sunday, 16 March 2025 03:12 (three months ago)

College football head coaches earning $7m or $8m a year plus another $2m in perks while football players - though not all - were paid in scholarships, dorm rooms and free meals was even more gross.

more difficult than I look (Aimless), Sunday, 16 March 2025 03:17 (three months ago)

college sports def in a weird spot right now lot of things changing along with the aforementioned nil and transfer portal (funny name) conference realignment is really sending the whole system into flux, some killing the goose to get the gold vibes

lag∞n, Sunday, 16 March 2025 03:29 (three months ago)

that is totally true

but when players were compelled, however illicitly and uncompensated-ly, to play for a school, they at least had a link to the school

the modern system is clearly fairer to players and more righteous in general! but also it points out how universities shouldn't be in this business at all (but money)

years ago my dad taught chemistry at a (catholic) PA college that put a ton of resources into establishing a (division iii) football team, because it thought that was the best way to spur enrollment. which is fucked up!

anyway i guess i'm saying that college sports is still awful, if for different reasons than formerly

arkansas-st. john's was wild/brutal! teams combined for 44 fouls, 44 offensive rebounds, and 4-for-41 from three

also pretty weird that pitino sat the big east player of the year down the stretch (even if he *was* 3-for-17 from the floor)

mookieproof, Saturday, 22 March 2025 22:46 (three months ago)

watching the women’s tourney and the blow outs seem mostly the 1-2 seeds dominating (SC and UConn in particular). Most of the other games much closer and many of them very compelling matchups. Feel its on par with the men’s side glancing at the scores.
I like the current configuration. I watched a decent numbr of reg season games. but my habits skewed the top 10-15 teams and this tournament allows me to see other teams I’ve missed completely. xp

sknybrg, Saturday, 22 March 2025 22:57 (three months ago)

xpost i told my family there is no way Pitino sat Luis just because he was playing poorly. there's just no way he did that. Luis must've either said something to Pitino OR (probably more likely) gave up on a play, didn't play defense, etc.

after the game, Pitino gave a weird answer. "He played 30 minutes. That's a lot." and then something like, "Come on, (reporter's name), you know the answer to this question."

weird.

^ I think that would necessarily have to include "I love NIL payments", too.

Michigan has got to have enough wealthy boosters to afford to compete head-to-head in terms of NIL payouts to lure in talent. Not a condemnation. The U of Oregon has Nike's Phil Knight as its multi-billionaire sugar daddy so they've jumped into the brave new world of NIL with both feet, too.

mookieproof, Sunday, 23 March 2025 06:02 (three months ago)

I need to retract my comment on Pitino's answer above. I listened to it a few times this morning and I now think he just sat him because he was playing terribly and hurting their effort to win, and Rick thought other guys would give them a better chance. Which is incredible.

Rick gave that weird answer because he didn't want to say that and make Luis feel any worse than I'm sure he already did.

I still think you play him (as Lappas said), but I don't think he was benched for any reason other than poor play.

the choke job happened before the call. And Flagg got a nice look at the end, I'm sure nobody on the Duke side would be complaining about the refs if that shot went down. It would have been a one-possession game either way, and Duke had absolutely no business being in a one-possession game when they were up that big in the final minute.
