this miles bridges case is the latest, but between kobe, derrick rose, jaxson hayes, the mavs front office, jason kidd getting to have job after job, and others, it really feels like the nba's modus operandi is to hide behind the "let the law handle this" and issue zero consequences to its employees. all the sports leagues are bad about this, but nba feels worse bc they hide behind a veil of progressivism with the wnba and elevate a few women in coaching and front offices.

yeah, and there will invariably be allegations of hypocricy bc jason kidd has never wanted for work in this league, kendrick nunn was still allowed to join with a team, jaxson hayes is still here after pleading no contest to false imprisonment, etc. but that just be more reason why the league needs clear consequences for abusers.

this makes me yearn for politically organized fan groups a la supporters groups in soccer. imagine the kind of pressure a team's fans could have if they boycotted the team en masse for signing abusers.

baseball has taken a pretty strong stance recently on DV/abuse cases, they have the latitude to suspend players regardless of criminal findings. they have suspended players for 75-100 games, whole seasons recently. trevor bauer got 324 games even tho his accuser’s case got dismissed

the NFL will have a big one coming up with deshaun watson. the recent reporting is that he’ll get suspended for the whole season but i’m in “i’ll believe when i see it mode” on that one. they’ve issued a few long suspensions in high profile cases but those were really obvious ones. ezekiel elliot got 6 games a few years ago.

comparatively the NBA does seem to be lagging. the thing is that with baseball in particular the commissioner’s ability to issue suspensions or put players on leave is in the league CBA. i have no idea what silver is allowed to do per the CBA… maybe it’s something that will be addressed in the new CBA negotiations. it’s possible the union is as much or more of a hinderance than the league office/silver is

it’s possible, but i have to think that silver could find some mechanism to do something if he wanted to. even if it’s in a cba gray area he could do it and dare the union to push back.

looks like the league has only ever handed down multi year bans for repeated failed drug tests. arenas was suspended for the remainder of the 2010 season over the gun stuff, of course there was artest. from what i can tell silver is working without precedent in a world that takes this stuff more seriously than ever (one hopes) … i feel like he’ll get a long suspension but something far short of being banned for life (not sure that would even hold up legally/CBA wise) and we’ll see if he gets effectively blackballed a la ray rice. i feel like the latter is prob the most likely outcome w/ the league making some implicit decree that he won’t ever play again

i think once you go to prison for any real length of time (like anything more than a few months) you’re pretty much done as a pro athlete, regardless of how young you are. the only example i can think of is michael vick but he was a no 1 overall pick phenom level player so i think he got an unusual amount of leeway. also his victims weren’t humans which prob made it easier for him to return. henry ruggs will likely serve a sentence that releases him in his athletic prime but i doubt he’ll ever play in the NFL again

actually matt bush who is a reliever for the rangers did 3 years in prison and was signed after his release and ended up making it to the majors a year later. but he was convicted on a series of DUI crimes, in a sense victimless. and he was also a no 1 overall pick. baseball perhaps a bit unique as well bcuz the he was signed for nothing and sent to the minors so the investment (monetarily, roster wise) was as minimal as could be

Former 15-year NBA veteran Amar'e Stoudemire is facing a misdemeanor battery charge after he allegedly hit one of his teenage daughters in the face.

Miami-Dade County court records show that Stoudemire, 40, was arrested early Sunday and later released on $1,500 bond with a no-contact order issued.

According to a copy of the police report obtained by The Miami Herald, Stoudemire allegedly struck one of his two teenage daughters during an argument at his Miami home Saturday night. The report did not identify which of Stoudemire's two daughters, ages 17 and 14, was hit.

Stoudemire allegedly confronted the girl and accused her of being disrespectful to his mother during a phone call, according to the police report. When she denied it, he told her, "You're talking back again," and punched her in the jaw, leaving her bleeding, the report says.

The girl contacted her mother, Stoudemire's ex-wife, who came to the home, picked up the two girls and their two brothers, and contacted police.

The report says that when officers went to Stoudemire's home, he told them the teenage girl "was sad because she received a whooping from him for being disrespectful and a liar." He then invoked his right to remain silent.

Stoudemire denied the allegation against him in a statement posted on social media Sunday night.

there is a major point of contention over who shot first — the victim’s boyfriend or the guy who was friends w/ darius miles, the bama player who was indicted and who texted miller asking him to bring his (miles’) gun, which was then used in the killing

i personally can’t get to the point of saying that miller shouldn’t be drafted or play in the NBA because of this. you can say that if someone asks you to bring them a gun you should say no under any circumstance but not every 20 year old makes perfect decisions. it was not made explicit to him that xyz person was going to be shot, as opposed to, i may need this for my own protection. maybe you just call this plausible deniability but those are the facts of the case. and again you can say that you should flat out say no to such a request, but i do think it’s important to understand that miller was two degrees away from the shooter, who, if he did shoot first, appears to not have made his intentions known to anyone before firing

Manhattan prosecutors have dropped one of the assault charges against Houston Rockets guard Kevin Porter Jr., acknowledging Monday during Porter's hearing in Manhattan Criminal Court that he did not fracture his girlfriend's neck vertebra during an alleged attack at a New York City hotel last month.

This trade does a version of the opposite. It commodifies domestic violence in the parlance of NBA contracts. Horrible behavior becomes salary cap maneuvering. Agreeing to pay the remainder of Porter’s contract is worth a vaguely intriguing prospect and two second-round picks. Porter might as well have torn his Achilles tendon for the purposes of this trade. Same upshot, more or less. Both teams took the reality of the situation and used it to pursue their basketball-specific goals. They lined up their assets and made what they thought was a mutually beneficial trade.

Again: morally repugnant. Houston was reportedly shopping Porter around the league, attaching picks to Porter to make a potential trade more appetizing to other teams. The likelihood is if the Thunder had not made the trade, another team would have stepped in to make a similar deal work. The Rockets were clear that Porter was not going to play for them again after the incident. Viewing this through a basketball-first lens, they salvaged the contract they gave Porter the best way they could.
