feeling mildly excited about the spurs draft opportunities this summer. nobody really screams all star at this point, but there are a lot of really good guard prospects.

they did really well finding gems like derrick white and dejounte murray at the end of the first round when they were still a competitive organization. their guard selections since then have been much spottier. branham continues to baffle me as he made basically no growth from one year to the next as an inefficient shooter with no other discernible skills. wesley still can’t shoot although he at least looks like a serviceable defensive point guard. and then there’s primo.

vassell is definitely their 2 guard moving forward and tre jones is at least a good backup, so it hasn’t been all bad news.

they need hoisters badly tho, hoping one of the kentucky guards will be available.

I agree with the Inside guys’ take that they should change the rule that if the second challenge is successful, you should retain the timeout even if you can no longer challenge. People often want OKC to push all their chips in on a big star. But they already have three potential max-level players with SGA, Jalen Williams, and Chet. Adding another star doesn't seem helpful.

Feels like they can just keep adding supporting players via the draft and trades.

The Hayward trade was mostly to free up salary to allow them to keep their players who need extending this summer - Josh Giddey, Aaron Wiggins, and Isaiah Joe.

we'll see how the playoffs play out but i agree with you. better off getting depth to be more flexible with their lineups and play style.

Even if they crash and burn in the semis, the season's been a success for the Thunder. But it might feel like a waste of a season where the chips are falling - they're going to be playing the second round with a week's rest advantage against a team with injury concerns to their star.

They also have Ousmane Dieng waiting in the wings. He's still raw but might have the potential to add some options to the bench as a stretch 5 and scorer.

You can always count on them to trade for a huge contract (that is expiring soon and comes with free picks).

Giannis playing out of his mind too, dude was even better than he was in his MVP seasons and I think that covered for a lot. other than that nothing ever really clicked for this team, their defense was really bad under Griffin and though it did get a lot better under Doc they were broken offensively. Dame only looked like himself every 6th or 7th game and wound up putting up a lot of James Harden-esque stat lines. one of the least fun Bucks seasons in recent memory.

any team acquiring dame was doing so for basically a window of two seasons maybe 3 if everything went smashingly so to have one season totally wiped out is a complete disaster. there is no long term future you’re looking at here

bummer but at least they got one. doesn't feel like there's a bounce back available there next year, they had a lot of luck fall their way in the first half of this season that won't necessarily happen again

i forgot who said this on one of the podcasts recently but one of the guys, might've been hollinger, was arguing that we are generally very good at projecting the quality of the top 3 or top 5 in the draft -- those players are supposed to be pretty translatable, it's pretty rare we think the top 5 isn't good and then there's randomly 2 hall of famers in there or something. but after the top 8 or something even we basically have zero ability to understand or predict draft quality overall, which sounded right to me

Bronny, meanwhile showed some of the same traits we saw at USC: An inability to gain separation off the dribble or get into the paint, and a limited ability to leverage his straight-line speed and one-leg leaping ability in the run of play. James hit two 3-pointers in the second game and made two floaters in the first, but over the course of his two days, he shot 6 of 18 with four rebounds, two assists and four turnovers. He was 2 of 9 on 3-pointers and 3 of 5 from the free-throw line.

James also measured just 6-foot-1 1/2 inches in socks; between that and his inability to get anywhere off the dribble, finding a pro position for him will be tough. this is only tangentially related but there has been a similar backlash against quarterback overdevelopment in football. there was a time period where a lot of the top QB prospects were celebrated for having been taking private QB lessons since their early teens but when they ended up getting to major college football or the NFL they were too robotic, didn’t have functional athleticism, etc. christian hackenberg, josh rosen types. as guys like that flamed out and someone like mahomes showed up, you started to hear over QB coaching brought up as a negative, and teams started to look for more creative athletic gunslinger types.

if you follow college football recruiting nowadays, playing multiple sports, having a certain rawness is considered a plus for a highly rated QB. playing baseball in particular intrigues bcuz you have to throw from different arm slots, you’re never taught to be this 5 step drop back then throw this perfect motion type QB. but even just playing basketball and getting out there and being an athlete is now viewed as better for development than spending all that time doing QB drills over and over in a non competitive setting

ofc the negative downside of this is the zach wilson types who can’t do anything in the pocket and flame out. but the idea of extreme skill specialization — drew hanlen shit — has fallen out of favor w/ QBs

i think in the long term — like talking the next 10, 20, 30 years — the european system, if the argument is based on the idea that developing for the team is better for the individual in the long run than developing just for the individual, will have to constantly withstand, essentially, the allure of selfishness. which is to say that as the pipeline to NBA mega stardom becomes even more clear and more direct for european players, will european basketball writ large forever be able to convince teenagers with dollar signs in their eyes that actually, no, thinking strictly about yourself and your own game right now is bad for you and we need you to not think that way but you’re still gonna be the no 1 pick. maybe they will, i kinda have my doubts

I find it interesting that the Blazers have both Ayton & Time Lord under contract along with Duop Reath, the 27-year-old rookie center who played big - and credible - minutes for them all last season, but they've invited a surprising number of centers to work out for them.

Not many (any?) teams would be interested in taking on Ayton's contract, but it feels like Williams could be moving on soon. Reath should stay. He's too valuable as a young bench guy with lots of in-game experience on a very cheap contract.

feel like topic could be a steal guy who put up numbers in europe at 18 years old, seems like a bad 3pt shooter (30%) but could possibly be a very good one (88%ft!) and is dropping due to a torn acl an injury that players tend to recover fully from, has elite feel for the game and an elite skill (passing), great height (6-6) for his position (pg)

not going to pretend i've broken down castle tape but one thing that intrigues me about him is that you usually don't see the best play from, or the full games of, young ball handlers on loaded college teams, especially ones w/ dominant big men. this is largely why so many kentucky guards over perform in the NBA. uconn had three perimeter players who, from what i can tell, are borderline NBA prospects take more shots than castle.

i watched some castle clips and the thing that made me think hes not going to be a star is he wasnt getting those easy buckets against a set halfcourt defense that make it obvious hes just much better than the guys hes playing against, he was effective but it was more of a craft thing working his way to the basket with multiple dribble moves, and his shooting isnt great, athleticism prob nba average, good but not overpowering size, almost certainly a guy who will get minutes in the nba but i dont see the high upside there

has elite feel for the game and an elite skill (passing), great height (6-6) for his position (pg)

the heat have done a good developing nikola jovic, but you can also watch highlights from his first ever summer league game and see that he just had a good feel for how to play basketball, naturally looked to pass, had good height even tho he was skinny, had some skill w/ the ball etc (read the first ever post on jordan's heat bløg). even if he is only ever a good bench player the four guys drafted ahead of him were david roddy, marjon beauchamp, blake wesley, and wendell moore jr. i still think feel for the game, ability + willingness to pass, ballhandling skill etc the euro way are underrated in the draft

for sure, feel pretty confident that jovic is going to be much more than a good bench player too

another thing re castle is hes convinced hes a point guard refuses to workout for teams that already have one, its just weird theres no evidence that hes got the stuff to play there in the nba, i mean i get the vision he would be more valuable if it were true but idk if he just expects teams to believe him

i believe castle can become an average-ish shooter maybe, tho tbh im not that swayed by ft% as a harbinger of 3p potential if its just around league average. (ie tre jones came in with similar shooting woes, has improved a lot from the outside and from ft and he's still below average as a 3pt threat).

spurs desperately need a lead guard who is a threat to pull up from 3 and/or blow by defenders to create space for wemby, and i dont think castle will do either of those things well enough. if he cant be a starting pg, then hes kind of a utility wing which is a good bench player at least. guy who i like more: devin carter who has a lot of the same defensive upside as castle with a lot more offensive polish. my bias is guys with legit two-way skillsets and i like him more than any other guard prospect.

dont know what to make of williams bc he shot well from 3 but on very low volume. i think he will fit well as a transition threat, and he is archetypally the kind of player that the spurs could use as a wingmate for vassell. i think hes a high upside swing, i wouldnt mind it for them.

im not a huge topic fan, i think hes too slow and has too short arms to be a plus defender and i want players who can't be hunted on switches.
