I love how Lakers fans are the most unrealistic people in the world about their team's chances to win a championship...

12) Which team will win the NBA title?

44.2% Pistons
20.6% Spurs
7.8% Lakers
7.6% Mavericks
5.5% Heat
3.2% Suns
2.7% Cavaliers
2.4% Nets
1.6% Bulls
1.4% Kings
0.7% Nuggets
0.7% Wizards
0.6% Pacers
0.5% Clippers
0.3% Bucks
0.2% Grizzlies

How'd that work last time back in 2004? Oh yeah, now I remember!

Aaron W (Aaron W), Thursday, 20 April 2006 18:37 (nineteen years ago)

Well, the Lakers have been playing pretty well lately. It isn't plausible, but possible.

Anyway, I'm going with Detroit because they are the rare dynasty comprised largely of likeable people. Although the same could be said about the Spurs.

polyphonic (polyphonic), Thursday, 20 April 2006 21:30 (nineteen years ago)

I'll be at the two Kings/Spurs games in Sacramento. There's nothing quite like seeing playoff basketball in person, but I'm not terribly optimistic about my Kings' chances this year. If they pick up a game or two at Arco, it will undoubtedly be the result of me screaming at the top of my lungs from the cheapest seats in the house.

Wishful thinking, though. I think Detroit will win this year, barring a Tayshun leg contusion or Rasheed Wallace getting thrown out of the league for flaring his nostrils.

Fonzie Scheme (Matt Chesnut), Saturday, 22 April 2006 15:52 (nineteen years ago)

Observations from today are:

That foul call at the end of the NJ-Pacers game was ridiculous, but the Nets didn't deserve to win with that awful, stagnant "let's watch Carter go one-on-one" offense

Regarding my derision of the Lakers, how can a team that starts Luke Walton, SmOOsh Parker and Kwame Brown in a playoffs game be expected to be a legitimate championship contender???? Even if Kobe scores 81 again.

Aaron W (Aaron W), Sunday, 23 April 2006 20:02 (nineteen years ago)

the nets were terrible in that game. the talking heads really jumped the gun in calling them potential championship contenders in the middle of those late-season win streaks- they're a great team that goes exactly four deep.

metonymus prime (rgeary), Monday, 24 April 2006 19:08 (nineteen years ago)

and barely nbdl-level past that

metonymus prime (rgeary), Monday, 24 April 2006 19:08 (nineteen years ago)

Letting VC jack up a million jump shots (some that didn't even hit rim) was a pretty piss-poor offensive strategy. I think the Nets readjust and the series goes 6 or 7 games, but wow that was an awful display.

Aaron W (Aaron W), Monday, 24 April 2006 20:22 (nineteen years ago)

Keep on showin those pistons no respect........... s.a. gets swept this year! go detroit!

anyone who appreciates unselfishness, teamwork, tough defense, and great passing should start watching the lakers. fucking nuts.

Kwame and Luke are punk bitches.

David R. (popshots75`), Saturday, 29 April 2006 14:49 (nineteen years ago)

c(''c) (Leee), Saturday, 29 April 2006 18:23 (nineteen years ago)

Whoa I just heard the Stranglers' "Peaches" being played over the PA at the Dallas-Memphis game!!! Awesome.

Aaron W (Aaron W), Saturday, 29 April 2006 22:18 (nineteen years ago)

the defense in the nuggets/clippers game tonight was horrendous on both sides. i've seen more effort and technique during local pickup games. pitiful.

the lakers are indeed a fun team to watch of late. if anything, kobe has been trying to pass too much, or at least forcing passes in attempt to make a highlight.

oops (Oops), Sunday, 30 April 2006 05:16 (nineteen years ago)

As big an egg as Detroit laid last night (how the hell did they let the Bucks shoot 60%??), today I'm much happier being a Pistons fan than I would be if I were a fan of the Miami Heat. That team looks pretty unhinged, although it's a pretty safe bet that the refs won't let Shaq get into foul trouble three games in a row.

Aaron W (Aaron W), Sunday, 30 April 2006 19:21 (nineteen years ago)

I want to see a Bulls/Clippers final.

Stormy Davis (diamond), Sunday, 30 April 2006 21:36 (nineteen years ago)

I think the referee's doing all they can to hand him the opportunities helps out a little bit.

He should really cut out that raping shit though.

Jeff. (Jeff), Sunday, 30 April 2006 22:48 (nineteen years ago)

that shaq trade is looking better every day!

dan (dan), Monday, 1 May 2006 02:52 (nineteen years ago)

I just think back to like, the last two years when sir charles would go on TNT and bemoan the fact that the NBA expanded the first round to best-of-seven, complaining about how boring the games are and how ridiculous it was to draw it out and how every outcome was a forgone conclusion ... and I'd be like "You are right, Sir Charles!" I mean I was totally with him on that point..

but wow this years first round so far is one of the best I can ever remember ... feels like semifinal rounds in almost every series!!

Stormy Davis (diamond), Monday, 1 May 2006 04:31 (nineteen years ago)

compare:

7 seed lakers (kobe surrounded by very young underachievers, busts, and cast-offs) enjoying a love fest while outplaying a 2 seed (lead by an mvp, a three-time all-star, and the league's most-improved player)

2 seed heat (most-dominant-ever surrounded by future hall-of-famers and wily veterans) imploding (why do shaq teams always end up self-destructing?) against a .500 (in the east!) 7 seed

NBA: watch out for Dallas

Dominique (dleone), Tuesday, 2 May 2006 01:22 (nineteen years ago)

Hey congratulations, they managed to sweep a team that has never won a playoff game.

COME ON, that's like bragging about breaking your sister's nose and then proclaiming "WBC AND IBF, WATCH YR BACK OK?"

Fonzie Scheme (Matt Chesnut), Tuesday, 2 May 2006 01:36 (nineteen years ago)

better than anyone else did

Dominique (dleone), Tuesday, 2 May 2006 01:42 (nineteen years ago)

Is there anyone on the Grizzlies bench that would make one doubt their team's chances of winning any game? If you say Pau Gasol, that's a throat chop. That team is built to squeeze into the playoffs so that they can be routinely bounced out by a contender. They shouldn'ta traded Bonzi!

Fonzie Scheme (Matt Chesnut), Tuesday, 2 May 2006 01:59 (nineteen years ago)

well, there was no shortage of NBA people saying this series was going 6 or 7 games. All I'm saying is that Dallas ran over a supposedly good defensive team much quicker and much easier than most people were predicting. Sure, I thought Dallas would win this series, but had this been the Spurs doing the same thing, people would be calling it typical championship basketball.

Dominique (dleone), Tuesday, 2 May 2006 02:47 (nineteen years ago)

dallas has looked really good. i thought memphis matched up well with them and would give them some trouble.

dan (dan), Tuesday, 2 May 2006 03:17 (nineteen years ago)

Headline of tomorrow's Dallas Morning News: "Dirk Defies Pundits, Pummels Mediocre Memphis"

Fonzie Scheme (Matt Chesnut), Tuesday, 2 May 2006 03:51 (nineteen years ago)

Memphis is the new Minnesota, only without a Garnett kind of player to put up something resembling a fight.

Fonzie Scheme (Matt Chesnut), Tuesday, 2 May 2006 03:54 (nineteen years ago)

Okay, I've been to playoff games at Arco before and it does get loud, but I don't think I've ever heard anything like the crowd at the two games this series. It's like listening to a jet take off for two and a half hours. The Spurs looked visibly shaken down the stretch, especially when they missed all those freethrows in the fourth quarter. I can see why they wouldn't want to come back.

Jeff Reguil0n (Talent Explosion), Tuesday, 2 May 2006 04:17 (nineteen years ago)

I am cautiously optimitstic about the Spurs' prospects right now, but Ginobili needs to sucker punch Ron Artest out of commission in order to be remotely effective. Most frustrating "star" to watch of all time.

Fonzie Scheme (Matt Chesnut), Tuesday, 2 May 2006 04:19 (nineteen years ago)

this is a potentially controversial time to be living in los angeles!

metonymus prime (rgeary), Tuesday, 2 May 2006 04:58 (nineteen years ago)

that said: dallas is totally hot right now

clippers looking solid, but will probably get exposed

unfortunately we probably have to watch them play the lakers- somehow i hate this team even more now that it doesn't suck, when previously my only reason for really hating it was that it sucked. somehow kobe passing the ball and hustling just seems like a total brownnose move to MVP voters. not that it isn't providing massively entertaining/frustrating basketball. i still hate it.

metonymus prime (rgeary), Tuesday, 2 May 2006 05:00 (nineteen years ago)

agreed that this is probably the best 1st round in a dog's age, cf wizards/cavs battle that will leave the survivor at detroit's mercy

metonymus prime (rgeary), Tuesday, 2 May 2006 05:02 (nineteen years ago)

I'm actually pulling for the Lakers (for the first time in history). I've loved watching their games, but then I hate Phoenix, so it didn't take much. and another vote for this first round being the best playoffs I can remember

Dominique (dleone), Tuesday, 2 May 2006 11:18 (nineteen years ago)

dominique--you pull for the lakers and i'll pull for the mavericks and i'll see you at the western conference finals.

i don't really see kobe brownnosing for an mvp vote that happened ten days ago. it would be kind of dumb. kobe gets ripped when he shoots 30 times and ripped when he shoots fifteen. he feeds on the hate!

dan (dan), Tuesday, 2 May 2006 14:54 (nineteen years ago)

i've inadvertantly created a monster then!

metonymus prime (rgeary), Tuesday, 2 May 2006 16:39 (nineteen years ago)

i think he is trying to prove that he should have been the mvp though...dude is egotistical enough that i don't believe him if he denies it. i love watching the insanity because of it though.

metonymus prime (rgeary), Tuesday, 2 May 2006 16:40 (nineteen years ago)

anyway i think my current souring on the lakers is due to luke walton and kwame brown doing their best 90's knicks impressions. the thuggery level on the team really shot up recently. lamar's development is really fun to watch at the moment- if there's someone who could sway me back to the purple and gold, it's a three-shooting, 6-10 stoner point guard in a small forward suit.

metonymus prime (rgeary), Tuesday, 2 May 2006 16:41 (nineteen years ago)

see, i'm conflicted.

metonymus prime (rgeary), Tuesday, 2 May 2006 16:42 (nineteen years ago)

he should have been the mvp. lots of people said he wasn't considered because his team wasn't very good, becuase he didn't make the players around him better, and because he was all about his own stats: three arguments, shot to hell. granted, it's come against the fraudulent suns. more will be revealed. keep bringing the hate!

dan (dan), Tuesday, 2 May 2006 17:11 (nineteen years ago)

except he shot those arguments to hell in the playoffs...two weeks after mvp voting

metonymus prime (rgeary), Tuesday, 2 May 2006 17:42 (nineteen years ago)

Ding!

David R. (popshots75`), Tuesday, 2 May 2006 17:44 (nineteen years ago)

in any case, Steve Nash is going to feel great holding his mvp trophy as he watches round 2 on TV. I think there is an argument to be made for not voting on MVP until after the playoffs start. I know it's really different season, but it also seems kind of a joke to pretend that MVP players aren't expected to shine during the biggest moments

Dominique (dleone), Tuesday, 2 May 2006 17:57 (nineteen years ago)

here's a sober and informed look at kobe's

spiritual growth.

dan (dan), Tuesday, 2 May 2006 17:59 (nineteen years ago)

ok forget everything I just said

Dominique (dleone), Tuesday, 2 May 2006 18:12 (nineteen years ago)

If you don't think the Mavs are one of the three best teams in basketball, you didn't watch the NBA this season.

polyphonic (polyphonic), Tuesday, 2 May 2006 23:05 (nineteen years ago)

Dominique (dleone), Tuesday, 2 May 2006 23:42 (nineteen years ago)

LOS ANGELES May 2, 2006 (AP)— Police said Tuesday they are investigating whether Los Angeles Lakers center Kwame Brown was involved in a reported sexual assault.

"The assault is alleged to have occurred in the early morning hours of April 29," said Officer Jason Lee, a police spokesman.

The Lakers beat the Phoenix Suns in Game 3 of their NBA playoff series the night before.

The case is under investigation by the department's Robbery Homicide Division. Police have notified the district attorney's office of the investigation.

The Lakers were in Phoenix to play the Suns in Game 5 of their Western Conference playoff series Tuesday night. Lakers spokesman John Black said the 24-year-old Brown was with the team but wouldn't comment further.

A phone message was left with Brown's agent, Jeff Wernick. No further details were immediately available.

Aaron W (Aaron W), Wednesday, 3 May 2006 00:41 (nineteen years ago)

raja bell got one game for his cowardly clotheslining of kobe. no word yet on assault charges. the lakers need to restore some order quickly.

dan (dan), Wednesday, 3 May 2006 22:26 (nineteen years ago)

excuse me if this is common knowledge, but does anyone know what's going on with the left side of Ernie Johnson's face?

Dominique (dleone), Wednesday, 3 May 2006 22:36 (nineteen years ago)

He has some form of cancer, I believe :( (had? not sure how treatment is progressing)

Stormy Davis (diamond), Wednesday, 3 May 2006 23:15 (nineteen years ago)

Yeah, I just noticed that, too (during Barkley's stunning gambling babble) - here's a statement EJ released in February about his condition.

Stormy Davis (diamond), Wednesday, 3 May 2006 23:45 (nineteen years ago)

We're just a few years away from Microsoft Flight Simulator Center.

Fonzie Scheme (Matt Chesnut), Thursday, 4 May 2006 00:02 (nineteen years ago)

I believe they refer to the arena in Cleveland as "The Q."

Jeff Reguil0n (Talent Explosion), Thursday, 4 May 2006 02:36 (nineteen years ago)

Also, I really hope Ernie Johnson comes out of this thing healthy. Aside from the fact that he seems like a good dude and that nobody deserves a face tumor, that studio show is probably my favorite thing about televised sports right now.

Stupid cancer.

Jeff Reguil0n (Talent Explosion), Thursday, 4 May 2006 02:39 (nineteen years ago)

Sym Sym (sym), Thursday, 4 May 2006 03:13 (nineteen years ago)

i don't know how the subsequent rounds will possibly top this first one, but something tells me they will. being an NBA fan is so much fun right now and a big gasface for all those doofs who go on about how college basketball is like so pure man! the nba can't hold a candle to future washups jacking up 3s for 40 mins straight!

oops (Oops), Thursday, 4 May 2006 03:21 (nineteen years ago)

that Barkley thing (which was news to me) was basically "here's a guy who has all the classic signs of a gambling problem telling us that it's not a problem and isn't going to quit". I guess he can afford it, but it was kind of like seeing a lion having his mane cut off a bit

Dominique (dleone), Thursday, 4 May 2006 12:30 (nineteen years ago)

charles was awesome--as honest as he could be. i think he still has tough lessons to learn. i wish the guy had asked charles if he knew of anyone who used to gamble the way charles admits to gambling now, and had later been able to manage and control it without stopping altogether. i'm not sure such a person exists.

dan (dan), Thursday, 4 May 2006 15:33 (nineteen years ago)

"I DON'T THINK HE WAS HUGGED ENOUGH!"

i heard this on the radio yesterday. kobe has elevated himself to stone cold classic.

David R. (popshots75`), Friday, 5 May 2006 14:20 (nineteen years ago)

If the Cavs/Wiz game goes into overtime, Gilby and 'Bron should settle the series with a game of Horse. Or a punchout. Either/or.

wow, that's a tough goat to be, Arenas

Dominique (dleone), Saturday, 6 May 2006 02:17 (nineteen years ago)

I'll give Kobe credit for this gem:

"When you go to the bathroom, you can't stand there and look at what you just dropped. At some point, you have to flush."

But, it's a pretty safe bet that they're about to get bounced from the playoffs.

Aaron W (Aaron W), Saturday, 6 May 2006 22:49 (nineteen years ago)

Sym Sym (sym), Sunday, 7 May 2006 02:30 (nineteen years ago)

I'm suprised no one caught that during the game.

Great wisdom from Neal Pollock, Suns fan.

So where was I? Oh, yes. The Lakers are a bunch of thugs, head cases and rapists, led by a cocky, stupid man-child who lords his admittedly superior talent over his opponents (and everyone else), as though he was living out some sort of pre-ordained historical destiny. The Suns are a likable gang of misfits, plus one thug, led by a Communist Canadian with bad hair. Who would you root for?

Jeff. (Jeff), Sunday, 7 May 2006 15:47 (nineteen years ago)

Go clips.

Jeff. (Jeff), Sunday, 7 May 2006 15:48 (nineteen years ago)

This might be the first time I agree with Neal Pollack. Kenny Smith and Barkley were also otm after the game saying that even when Kobe only take two shots in the second half he's still being selfish.

I would say NO, but I have a feeling if I do say that something weird will happen and the Cavs will win the next four games.

It was nice to see James pwned like that.

Yeah.

polyphonic (polyphonic), Monday, 8 May 2006 17:16 (nineteen years ago)

tayshaun blocking the bejesus out of lebron's layup in the 2nd quarter was NICE. the cavs will steal one at home, probably with bron scoring 45+, but they're going down and probably in five games. lebron will have his day once this whole defense fad blows over.

metonymus prime (rgeary), Monday, 8 May 2006 17:24 (nineteen years ago)

of course we're pretty much starved of coverage here (managed to see Cavs at the Pistons last night). I know the Mavs lost, but was it a battering or a close run thing?

We get something like 3 games a week on Sky (most at stupid o'clock), it's appalling, may have to get NASN next season.

Porkpie (porkpie), Monday, 8 May 2006 21:59 (nineteen years ago)

the mavs spurs game was played well by both teams, i think. admittedly i wasn't paying that close attention, but i felt like there was still a possiblity for the mavs to win near the end. i think it will be an interesting series.

tehresa (tehresa), Monday, 8 May 2006 22:49 (nineteen years ago)

i don't know wtf stackhouse was thinking on that last play. he got the ball and could've easily hoisted up an 18 footer to tie the game, but he stepped back behind the arc which allowed manu to recover and d the fuck out of him in the corner. he either a) didn't know the score or b) wanted to be the here. either way: DUMB

oops (Oops), Monday, 8 May 2006 23:10 (nineteen years ago)

Stack had time to go the rim, too, and at least probably get fouled and go to the line, if not hit a game-tying layup or dunk. That mad dash for the corner 3 was odd. THIS IS WHY YOU COME OFF BENCH.

Fonzie Scheme (Matt Chesnut), Tuesday, 9 May 2006 03:47 (nineteen years ago)

I doubt that no matter what happened had stack gone to the rim, they weren't going to call a foul. It looks like he kind of panicked, but considering the spurs defense, it's not that surprising he went for the three.

Now, as for tonight - man, I don't know what to think. I think it's a major test for the Mavs to show if they have the will to push towards a championship. These are the types of games that strength of will and not fucking up under pressure come to the fore. And god I hate Bowen against us. Root for him all year, but against us, die die die.

Dominique (dleone), Tuesday, 9 May 2006 18:15 (nineteen years ago)

Eh, Stack probably knew the score but thought he could win the game with a 3. Unfortunately, he wasn't expecting Ginobili to close out so quickly. Still a better performance than his 2 for 15 games in the playoffs when he was playing for Detroit that led to his trade to Washington. Poor Stackhouse.

So so sullen right now. WHAT THE FUCK IS WITH THIS SMALL LINE-UP SHIT, WHEN DID IT BECOME TEH GOTDAMN NCAA, WHEN IS PARKER COVERING NOWIZKI ON THE SWITCH EVER A GOOD IDEA UGHHH. I keep thinking that this would be a totally different series if the Spurs stuck with their regular rotation and had Mohammed or Nesterovic in the game. At this point, they've got nothing to lose in trying it out. They countered the Suns' pace last year by letting Stoudamire go nuts while shutting everyone else down. Stick one of the centers on Nowitzki, let Bowen shut down whatever wing players, allow Duncan to stay out of foul trouble covering Diop or Dampier, and I guess wound Jason Terry. Spurs are getting seriously out the fuck coached.

Fonzie Scheme (Matt Chesnut), Tuesday, 16 May 2006 05:36 (nineteen years ago)

Brent Barry has no business being on the floor in this series. Also, the Spurs are killing themselves on defensive switchoffs. Tim Duncan looked like a newborn foal trying to cover Jason Terry.

polyphonic (polyphonic), Tuesday, 16 May 2006 15:57 (nineteen years ago)

Stick one of the centers on Nowitzki

I'm not sure if this would work. Nowitzki would be going nuts with his jumper and plus, he's now driving to the hoop more. And those clumsy ass Spurs cetners would send him to the line over and over.

QuantumNoise (Justin Farrar), Tuesday, 16 May 2006 16:47 (nineteen years ago)

He's already going to the line over and over anyway! And going nuts with his jumper! Using a center wouldn't stop Dirk, but it'd give them an inside presence on the offensive glass of which they are getting basically nothing (to say nothing of having someone to box out Dampier who had six OReb yesterday). And they could use Bowen, Ginobili, Barry, or whatever 2 or 3 they have to throw at guys their own size and maybe slow them down (a la last postseason against the Suns, shutting down Marion and Q Richardson while letting Stoudamire go bananas every night for losses).

x-post to first round discussion

Fonzie, I'm actually not a fan of either team, but I dig watching these two teams go at it.

This is the first time in this rivalry where I see the Spurs having trouble no matter what adjustments they make. I just don't think they match up too well with the Mavs this year.

QuantumNoise (Justin Farrar), Tuesday, 16 May 2006 17:44 (nineteen years ago)

They really don't. No answer for Dirk. Fucking 7 foot shooting guards.

Fonzie Scheme (Matt Chesnut), Tuesday, 16 May 2006 17:56 (nineteen years ago)

he really is nearly unstoppable! you'd think any 7 foot guy putting the ball on the floor, you should be able to swipe it right out of his hands, but somehow he usually keeps it under control. and there should be absolutely no one in the league who could stop his jump shot. seriously, why doesn't dirk average like 40 a game?

metonymus prime (rgeary), Tuesday, 16 May 2006 22:06 (nineteen years ago)

avery johnson is running coaching rings around pop, for sure. can anyone see pop retiring if the spurs go down? or does he stick around, hope duncan gets healthy next year, and that the commish sees fit to fix up the seeding arrangement so the spurs don't have a tough opponent until the conference finals? basically i mean even if the mavs take them out, the window for potential spurs championships doesn't seem closed for another couple years yet so long as parker improves as duncan declines and manu doesn't break a leg or something.

metonymus prime (rgeary), Tuesday, 16 May 2006 22:08 (nineteen years ago)

*duncan doesn't really seem to be in decline yet, i think he has a couple peak years left, but injuries really seemed to slow him down this year.

metonymus prime (rgeary), Tuesday, 16 May 2006 22:09 (nineteen years ago)

anyhow watch suns/clips tonight. what a great coaching duel so far.

metonymus prime (rgeary), Tuesday, 16 May 2006 22:09 (nineteen years ago)

"seriously, why doesn't dirk average like 40 a game?"

Because they don't want the team sitting around watching him score! Besides he's got some nice talent around him.

polyphonic (polyphonic), Wednesday, 17 May 2006 15:15 (nineteen years ago)

Do you think Avery will stick with the Mavs or will eventually replace Pops in San Antone?

I dunno, I don't think Pop will retire until he's milked this core for all its worth in titles. This team is kind of his baby, and even though nominally the GM position isn't his anymore, he still has control over the direction of the team. My guess is he won't step down until Duncan does, or at least starts to head into the twilight of his career.

I wouldn't be surprised if AJ eventually does come back. He's still well-loved by the city, but I think there's a possibility that he'd rather stay in Dallas so he can say "I made this team a winner" rather than come back to SA and inherit one.

Fonzie Scheme (Matt Chesnut), Wednesday, 17 May 2006 16:04 (nineteen years ago)

("this core" being Duncan, Ginobili and Parker)

Fonzie Scheme (Matt Chesnut), Wednesday, 17 May 2006 16:22 (nineteen years ago)

he'd rather stay in Dallas so he can say "I made this team a winner" rather than come back to SA and inherit one.

That's assuming that he hasn't already made the Mavericks a winner, which could easily happen this year.

polyphonic (polyphonic), Wednesday, 17 May 2006 17:51 (nineteen years ago)

Yeah, except he wasn't out of bounds and Steve Nash screwed up as many times as Livingston did.

he wasn't, was he? i thought so on the replay but TNT's crew said nothing of the sort- and they are usually quick to debate calls like that- so i thought i was loony! i even backed it up on the tivo to check it and i thought it was a pretty clear call!

there were errors on both sides, but it was pretty even overall. ewing's was the worst, save maybe sam's 8 sec violation, ewing should have hip-checked bell into next week.

metonymus prime (rgeary), Wednesday, 17 May 2006 17:59 (nineteen years ago)

"this" = the series?

I still think Detroit can take it ... only because they've been in this position before. but McDyess needs to not sulk on the bench, and Flip needs to get his head out of his ass, and they need to like, actually make a few baskets, and Big Ben needs to make AT LEAST ONE free throw for the love of god, and Sheed needs to get his head out of his ass, and Tayshaun needs to grow a pair and take a shot when it presents itself, and ... ugh. there needs to be some serious cowboy-uppage.

Stormy Davis (diamond), Thursday, 18 May 2006 01:57 (nineteen years ago)

The Spurs' inability to at LEAST try playing a center is maddening. They're pretty much conceding the series by sticking to the EXACT same game plan of the last two games, which will get them just enough to lose by three. And it's a shame, too, cos Duncan just had the greatest half of basketball I've ever seen him play.

I loathe Manu Ginobli, BTW. Irrational? Sure - he reminds me of a friend I play ball w/ that hustles his ass off all the time, dribbles circles around fatties-in-training like me, and WILL NOT STOP. That said friend seems to suck ass whenever we're paired up is probably the true source of my Manu hate. Anyway, if he gets shivved or Kamen'd during game 6, I won't weep.

It's called defense, and the players around Lebron shrinking like violets.

Bring on the Heat! I just hope the Stones have enough in the tank to make it through two more series.

Aaron W (Aaron W), Monday, 22 May 2006 12:46 (nineteen years ago)

According to Skip Bayless, the loss was Lebron's fault.

Has Bayless ever met a devil's advocacy he didn't like?

Why do the Spurs do this to me? Why couldn't they just lose game 5? Or why couldn't they just get blown out here so they could spare me the second half and overtime, giving mean extra hour to start recovering?

cws (cws), Tuesday, 23 May 2006 05:47 (nineteen years ago)

well they won last year, so they must be able to win at least a couple games this time.

Sym Sym (sym), Tuesday, 23 May 2006 06:13 (nineteen years ago)

The Clippers game sucked. The Suns were just completely unstoppable tonight. It was like the total flipside of Game 6.

Imagine how good they could be with Amare and Kurt Thomas. It's crazy.

If I'm Dallas, I think I take advantage of the size difference and get Dampier and Diop involved. There ain't no Tim Duncan on the Suns, s'fershure.

polyphonic (polyphonic), Tuesday, 23 May 2006 06:28 (nineteen years ago)

Seeing Mark Cuban celebrate sure did put a damper on the Mavs win, although this was off-set by my gf reminding me that Eva Longoria was probably crying at the same exact moment.

I still can't believe that the Mavs managed to win a game 7 in SA. And I can't wait for the Pistons-Heat series.

Aaron W (Aaron W), Tuesday, 23 May 2006 14:57 (nineteen years ago)

OTM re Cuban. Is Mark Cuban the most creepy player-hugging owner since Larry Miller?

Stephen X (Stephen X), Tuesday, 23 May 2006 15:28 (nineteen years ago)

Cuban is kind of like Richard Pryor in Brewster's Millions, but yes much, much more creepy. Josh Howard had a look of "uh this is really weird but this guy signs my paychecks so I better let him keep hugging me."

Aaron W (Aaron W), Tuesday, 23 May 2006 15:53 (nineteen years ago)

Cuban pays for his miraculously good forture with his cromagnon good looks.

I got the feeling (from the snippet of the post-game conference I saw) Pop didn't think the foul on Nowitski near the end of regulation should have been called. Pop needs to zip it & take his Dirking like a man.

David R. (popshots75`), Tuesday, 23 May 2006 17:14 (nineteen years ago)

get in Mavs!! shame we don't get coverage over here though, I'm not paying 20 pounds a month for coverage more often than two live matches per week.

Porkpie (porkpie), Tuesday, 23 May 2006 19:12 (nineteen years ago)

Was Duncan fouled by Dirk during the last shot in regulation or was it clean?? Nobody, and I mean Nobody will show the damn replay or photo or anything. I think it was clean or clean enough not to be called, just like Bowen's block in game 6? Were the f#@k are all the sports writers on this. This is pure irony!

It looked clean when I watched it live but I never saw a replay.

polyphonic (polyphonic), Tuesday, 23 May 2006 19:46 (nineteen years ago)

Those refs ain't calling fouls on the very last shot during regulation of a game 7 unless somebody pulls out a knife. You either rise to greatness and make that shot w/everybody trying to stop you or you just don't.

QuantumNoise (Justin Farrar), Tuesday, 23 May 2006 22:18 (nineteen years ago)

yeah if there was a foul, it definitely wasn't blatant enough for the refs to intercede. hooray for restrained use of whisltes at a crucial moment.

Jeff. (Jeff), Wednesday, 24 May 2006 01:03 (nineteen years ago)

I don't want to hear any moaning about fouls from any Spurs fans. Considering some of the wack shit that Jordan and the Knicks got in the 90s against the Pacers and some of those phantom fouls the Lakers got in their three peat (especially during a couple of those Blazers series), this stuff is nothing.

That being said, I did get caught up and watched quite a bit of the Mavs/Spurs series. It was very entertaining and I still cannot believe the Mavs won. I thought it was done after Ginobli hit the three.

Earl Nash (earlnash), Wednesday, 24 May 2006 02:24 (nineteen years ago)

anyone care to explain to me why Tom Petty is the official voice of the nba playoffs?

INSANE CLOWN FOSSE (Adrian Langston), Wednesday, 24 May 2006 16:33 (nineteen years ago)

At the beginning of the playoffs I had Detroit beating Miami in the con finals. But now I'm not so sure. Detroit looked just terrible against the Cavs. Does Flip lack motivational skills? I have a feeling he does.

QuantumNoise (Justin Farrar), Wednesday, 24 May 2006 16:36 (nineteen years ago)

I don't know, it's not like the Pistons were highly motivated last year. Last year they took advantage of a hobbled Shaq and an injured Wade to win the East. This year, both Wade and Shaq are healthy, and the Heat are quite deep.

Two years ago, when Detroit won it all, they barely scraped through the Eastern Conference and was fortunate to play a Lakers team that featured an ailing Shaq, a broken Karl Malone, and a finished Gary Payton. They piled up on Kobe and their athleticism was too much for an aging, slow team to handle.

Which is to say that I don't think the Pistons can beat a high quality, healthy team. They gave the Spurs a good fight last year and I expect them to do the same this year, but I don't think they can beat the Mavericks or Heat. If they do sneak by the Heat, I think the Suns are a great matchup for them due to the Suns' lack of size.

polyphonic (polyphonic), Wednesday, 24 May 2006 17:06 (nineteen years ago)

my new fantasy for the finals is that shaq and wade are seriously injured, leaving it up to the old dudes - alonzo, payton, walker - to hoist the team to victory (which they do)

INSANE CLOWN FOSSE (Adrian Langston), Wednesday, 24 May 2006 18:25 (nineteen years ago)

western conf finals are going to be espn klassic all the way. i'm pulling for a triple overtime banger.

mavs will probably take it in six if raja bell is out though, unless kurt thomas is actually ready to check back in. otherwise d'antoni is gonna have to rip off the suit and get out there to play some swingman.

somehow i could care less who wins miami-detroit. i kind of want to see shaq in the finals but that means i'm rooting for fatoine too...gack. i really can't watch that team except when wade has the ball. i'm curious as to what they do in 2 years when the old guys are gone, shaq is 90% ineffective and they have to rebuild younger & faster around wade.

tehresa (tehresa), Tuesday, 30 May 2006 04:11 (nineteen years ago)

Worst than depressing. Sure, Miami is playing very well, but this ain't the Pistons. I like Dale Davies in there to absorb some of the fouls. But to have 3 starters and the back up point guard get in foul trouble so early, then have them eventually come back into the game only to slap the ball handler's hand...
Detroit needs to find their swagger next game, and they just can't sit back and assume its gonna be there automatically at home.

peepee (peepee), Tuesday, 30 May 2006 12:05 (nineteen years ago)

p.s. on the playground, shaq is the big/fat kid who bullies everyone.

tehresa (tehresa), Tuesday, 30 May 2006 14:05 (nineteen years ago)

Well, Pistons season seems about over. Things went wrong when they started thinking that the playoffs would just be their coronation rather than a competition. By allowing the Cavs series to go seven games, they are just too exhausted to keep pace with Miami. And, to be honest, I'm sick of the griping and the blaming. Other than the first half of game 2 against Miami and game 1 against the Cavs, the last three weeks have hands down the worst I've seen Detroit play over the last three years.

polyphonic (polyphonic), Thursday, 1 June 2006 16:16 (nineteen years ago)

you ask, Wikipedia digs:

The success of the Heat's 2005 playoff run and Wade's impressive performances with Shaquille O' Neal hampered by injury led to an explosion of media attention and popularity for the budding superstar. Entrepreneur Sean "Diddy" Combs signed him to a model contract to his Sean John clothing company, and Wade also appeared on the cover of EA Sports' NBA Live 2006 video game. In 2006, GQ magazine described him as "the best dressed player in the NBA." He is currently signed with the Heat through 2006-07. In 2005, he became the second ever Miami Heat player to be chosen as one of People Magazine's 50 most beautiful people. (The other was Alonzo Mourning.) In what was perhaps the best example of Wade's rising popularity, he finished #1 in jersey sales for the 2005-2006 season. [1] Wade also endorses for Converse, who has made shoes under his name.

Wade is also among the American Christian adults who tithe, according to the Sun Sentinel in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. Wade gave 10% of his $2.6 million salary this season to the Blood, Water and Spirit Ministry in Chicago. Wade was a tither before he started playing in the NBA.

A strong advocate for literacy, Wade encouraged children to read his favorite novel, Pride and Prejudice, as well as other literary classics. In his words, "It's one of my favorite books, which usually surprises people. I guess they wonder how a love story from Regency England could be relevant to a 21st century basketball player from the Southside of Chicago. Class struggle, overcoming stereotypes and humble beginnings, getting out of your own way and letting love take over: these are things I can relate to, definitely."

Haikunym (Haikunym), Thursday, 1 June 2006 16:37 (nineteen years ago)

I didn't want to come here and gloat, but yes, Dirk is now a bonafide superstar, if the 1st team all NBAs and previous clutch performances weren't enough. I've seen a lot of Mavs games, but last night was the single most dominant performance I've seen anyone in Dallas deliver.

And yet, I really don't know how game 6 is going to go.

INSANE CLOWN FOSSE (Adrian Langston), Monday, 5 June 2006 19:44 (nineteen years ago)

Dan (during Rd. 1): ''that shaq trade is looking better every day!'' Yes, it is. Seriously, O'Neal is still great, and his agreeing to take less money than the Heat would have offered him (to sign good role players) is quite honorable, and a big part of the reason Miami is in the Finals.

Someone asked what the Heat will do in a few years, when O'Neal is really declining. I think they'll be fine: They will have Wade in his prime, some of the current role players, and two emerging talents in Wayne Simean and Dorell Wright. Both those players somehow fell to the Heat, who -- over the past two years -- have had the luxury of drafting very talented developmental projects. Miami could be very good for a long time.

Daniel, Esq., Monday, 5 June 2006 22:40 (nineteen years ago)

O'neal -- getting old
Payton is old
Walker -- getting old/no D
Williams -- meh/no D
Simean/Wright -- decent talent but no foundation players

The Heat will have to make some serious moves to remain an elite team.

QuantumNoise (Justin Farrar), Tuesday, 6 June 2006 00:19 (nineteen years ago)

Especially since the pendulum is going to shift in the East in the next few seasons, with Chicago, Orlando, Cleveland, maybe even the Bucks and Wizards on the rise. Shaq knows this year is probably his only shot at getting another championship.

Aaron W (Aaron W), Tuesday, 6 June 2006 16:15 (nineteen years ago)

Agreed. Riley built this Heat team to win NOW not to be a lasting power. He knows the window is closing for both O'Neal and him.

QuantumNoise (Justin Farrar), Tuesday, 6 June 2006 21:01 (nineteen years ago)

So the finals are starting tonight.... Anyone watching? *crickets*

cws (cws), Friday, 9 June 2006 01:17 (nineteen years ago)

Shaq needs to take his big ass elbows home. Popping Dirk in the jaw and giving Jerry stitches. Who does he think he is? a football player?

Miss Misery xox (MissMiseryTX), Friday, 9 June 2006 02:07 (nineteen years ago)

Sam have you not been watching pro basketball at all in the last decade? That's Shaq's game, dude, and any ref who tries to call a foul gets eviscerated by Shaq after the game for being a pansy and not letting him play, he's the most picked-on man in the history of sports, blah blah etc.

As for the internets, I've been too busy watching the game and "So You Think You Can Dance" to post here yet.

Haikunym (Haikunym), Friday, 9 June 2006 02:41 (nineteen years ago)

Dominique (dleone), Friday, 9 June 2006 03:20 (nineteen years ago)

Every perimeter shot by Gary Payton would have a better chance of going in if Shaq took it.

Terry is just awesome from the right side. How does he keep getting those open shots from his sweet spot?

Amazing defensive effort from Posey and Haslem on Dirk, btw.

polyphonic (polyphonic), Friday, 9 June 2006 04:34 (nineteen years ago)

Stormy Davis (diamond), Friday, 9 June 2006 04:49 (nineteen years ago)

Sam have you not been watching pro basketball at all in the last decade?

You sound like my boyfriend Matt. No, I'm one of those people who only watch during the playoffs so haven't paid much attention to Shaq. Yeah, shoot me.

I love Terry. George calls him "Thug Life" but I think he's great.

Too superstitious to make any calls.

Miss Misery xox (MissMiseryTX), Friday, 9 June 2006 12:09 (nineteen years ago)

Shaq needs to take his big ass elbows home. Popping Dirk in the jaw and giving Jerry stitches. Who does he think he is? a football player?

haha i went to the bulls/mavs game in chicago this year, and just as we were taking our seats, we noticed a bull lying hurt on the court. it was hinrich (my favorite player! i didn't get to see him play one second!). dirk elbowed the fuck out of him and gave him a concussion or something. later in the game, he elbowed luol deng hard, knocking out a couple teeth.

oops (Oops), Friday, 9 June 2006 20:06 (nineteen years ago)

Fonzie Scheme (Matt Chesnut), Sunday, 11 June 2006 23:41 (nineteen years ago)

Fonzie Scheme (Matt Chesnut), Monday, 12 June 2006 03:26 (nineteen years ago)

They were looking pretty bad last night. Wade looked really sick too. aww, poor baby! (not)

Miss Misery xox (MissMiseryTX), Monday, 12 June 2006 13:01 (nineteen years ago)

Wade played with a ton of energy but he was making all kinds of dumb mistakes along the way. For a while, I thought the Heat defense was going to drive the Mavs crazy, but in the end the Mavs depth just took over, sorta like in the final game against the Suns.

polyphonic (polyphonic), Monday, 12 June 2006 17:38 (nineteen years ago)

Must have been a short "while" because the Mavs were destroying the Heat by the second quarter.

Miss Misery xox (MissMiseryTX), Wednesday, 14 June 2006 11:51 (nineteen years ago)

Your wish is granted.

At this rate Wade is going to be in traction by age 28.

Aaron W (Aaron W), Wednesday, 14 June 2006 21:22 (nineteen years ago)

!!!!!!!!!

So the Jeff Galooley I sent down there did the job. Oh wait. . .

Put it this way: Wade could barely walk Wednesday, a day after Shaquille O'Neal took a charge, fell backward and rolled into Wade's left knee, buckling it.

Yeah I think that would F anybody up. Too bad for Miami that Wade's their only good player instead of a whole good team. Looks like their fate might be in the hands of Kazaam and worm head. aww.

Miss Misery xox (MissMiseryTX), Thursday, 15 June 2006 12:14 (nineteen years ago)

i'm kind of reluctantly pulling for the mavs tonight and overall, really only reluctantly because mark cuban is sort of a clown. but i sort of love him all the same, and i really want to see the mav's style get copied a bit more. and dirk has sort of won me over since his low point of bitching out jet last year.

oh and jet! what a wonderful young man! i don't think i'd ever seen a word of an interview with him before the finals. i always assumed since he was a hawk he would be a jerk...maybe the diaw/terry lesson is you become a better player and person once you escape the hawk's clutches.

also the ironing of josh howard stealing riley's "be the first '03 dude with a ring" line to wade would be delicious. but then i want wade to snag one too...but not if gp is anywhere near the building when they celebrate.

so torn

metonymus prime (rgeary), Thursday, 15 June 2006 19:27 (nineteen years ago)

*oh and jet! what a wonderful young man!

metonymus prime (rgeary), Thursday, 15 June 2006 19:31 (nineteen years ago)

this is a surprisingly clean series so far though, no? no big scuffles or anything? a couple of hard fouls but i don't think anyone's gotten screamy about it. have there even been any technicals? I think wade got one in game 2 for kind of yelling at a ref.

i bet haslem and adrian griffin get into it tonight if the score is close.

metonymus prime (rgeary), Thursday, 15 June 2006 19:33 (nineteen years ago)

"maybe the diaw/terry lesson is you become a better player and person once you escape the hawk's clutches."

yeah, pretty much!! the number of former hawks in this year's playoffs was pretty ridiculous - something like 11 of them :[

INSANE CLOWN FOSSE (Adrian Langston), Thursday, 15 June 2006 20:58 (nineteen years ago)

there have been a few technicals. I think wade drew one for hanging on the basket. Riley drew one.

I love Jason Terry.

Miss Misery xox (MissMiseryTX), Thursday, 15 June 2006 23:44 (nineteen years ago)

btw, what in the hell was Shaunie O'Neal wearing Tuesday night? Can't she wear a jersey like a normal person?

Why wasn't Shaq's father sitting with her? I think it's b/c of that stupid bustier.

Miss Misery xox (MissMiseryTX), Thursday, 15 June 2006 23:58 (nineteen years ago)

Forksclovetofu (Forksclovetofu), Friday, 16 June 2006 03:20 (nineteen years ago)

dudes.... wtf happened tonight?!~

someone pls recap (i'm too drunk/lazy to read sports websites)

tehresa, who will here remain anonymous (tehresa), Friday, 16 June 2006 04:32 (nineteen years ago)

Dirk was horrible. Jason Mcyappy Terry was horrible. Shaq showed up to play. Zo got off on the defensive end. Miami turned the ball over like it had fleas so Dallas had numerous opportunities to take over and couldn't throw the ball in the ocean. Dwayne was Dwayne. Miami took over by the half and the lead never dropped below double digits.
It's a series again.

Forksclovetofu (Forksclovetofu), Friday, 16 June 2006 05:15 (nineteen years ago)

"No" -- Jerry Stackhouse.

Daniel, Esq., Friday, 16 June 2006 20:43 (nineteen years ago)

If the games stay physical, Miami will win. Plus, the Mavs are going to have to double-team Wade now, forcing single coverage on O'Neal. It's a match-up problem for the Mavs, who -- with Nowitski well covered -- now seem to be the team facing the match-up problems.

We'll see. Don't bet against the Heat.

Daniel, Esq., Friday, 16 June 2006 20:48 (nineteen years ago)

I still say six games to dallas. Caveman Dirk will rise.

Though I hope I'm wrong. I'd love to see Shaq get a ring without Kobe and it would do my heart good to see Zo, J Dub and Shandon "we'll throw him in too" Anderson with that hardware.

On the other hand, Gary Payton getting a ring would infuriate me. So I'm torn.

Forksclovetofu (Forksclovetofu), Friday, 16 June 2006 21:09 (nineteen years ago)

Dallas winning means no ring for Karl Malone and Patrick Ewing, but one for Keith "Great White Hope" Van Horn and Jason Terry.

Forksclovetofu (Forksclovetofu), Saturday, 17 June 2006 03:52 (nineteen years ago)

forks, don't you think jason terry has been much more clutch than ewing or malone ever were? If Dallas pulls it out, I could see him getting the series MVP, considering that Dirk has been crap all series. He can be the first playoff MVP to get suspended for puching a dude in the balls!

Sym Sym (sym), Saturday, 17 June 2006 19:56 (nineteen years ago)

polyphonic (polyphonic), Monday, 19 June 2006 05:00 (nineteen years ago)

I'm worried about Miami winning in Dallas, too. But you have to like their chances at this point. Also, the Mavericks -- normally, a very good, very poised team -- seem to have come unglued, no? From moving to another hotel far away from the arena after Game 4, to Dirk's shooting woes, to the bizzaro Time Out incident, to Dirk kicking basketballs and equipment after Game 5, to reliable shooters missing FTs at crucial moments, to Avery Johnson's post- game comments about the late foul on Wade in Game 5, it seems like the Mavericks have melted down in this Series.

Maybe they can turn things around in Dallas. But I wouldn't count on it.

I am shocked that no one has mentioned what a bullshit foul the last one was. The Mavs play tight D, force Wade into a impossible off balance shot (which he takes and MISSES completely) and then suddenly they get called for ticky-tacky bullshit which the refs have been letting ride for the previous ten minutes. Pathetic.

more like I didn't think the mavs had losing in them. How could they let Shazam and sidekick (I don't care how good he is he ain't MJ jr.) psyche them out so much?

Calling Dwyane Wade a sidekick is wrong on so many levels. Thin-toine and Mint Chocolate Chip are the sidekicks. Dwyane Wade is Batman.

I was trying to insult Wade obviously.

I also like to call Haslem worm-head. Those braids need a trim.
