john wall debut anticipation?

luol deng (am0n), Monday, 16 November 2009 19:48 (sixteen years ago)

The Harrison Barnes press conference was hilarious.

windy = white, carl = black (polyphonic), Monday, 16 November 2009 20:00 (sixteen years ago)

link?

luol deng (am0n), Monday, 16 November 2009 20:51 (sixteen years ago)

I can't find it. I can only find the Q&A afterwards:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dZDYLZlRwq4

Before this, he spent ages going through the strengths and weaknesses of each prospective team before ultimately introducing Roy Williams via Skype, and the crowd roared.

Look at all the placards!

windy = white, carl = black (polyphonic), Monday, 16 November 2009 21:31 (sixteen years ago)

Thursday should be fun - Tobias Harris is supposed to announce, then North Carolina/Ohio State and Cal/Syracuse at MSG, with winners and losers getting each other the next night.

Conservative HOT Mom! (govern yourself accordingly), Monday, 16 November 2009 21:48 (sixteen years ago)

As a Syracuse fan, this is about as stoked as I've ever been four games into the season.

i wonder when this will happen to kentucky

mookieproof, Monday, 4 January 2010 17:08 (fifteen years ago)

I'm sure everyone does it. Just in this case this one dude had a big ass mouth on some radio show or something and spilled the beans.

Will be interesting to see if something similar happens to the sc football program..

mayor jingleberries, Monday, 4 January 2010 17:19 (fifteen years ago)

The theory goes that USC voluntarily imposed the self-sanctions on the basketball program to give the NCAA the appearance that they are policing themselves, to try and deflect NCAA scrutiny from the football program, in the hopes that the claim "we're handling it internally" will be acceptable. USC could have done even worse to its basketball team without much long-term damage, but if the football team received serious penalties, it'd just about kill their athletic department.

Granted, I follow some extremely embarrassing UCLA fansites (where they are basically convinced that everyone at USC is a cheater and a criminal), but Pete Carroll is 100x more valuable to the school than Tim Floyd ever was.

C-L, Monday, 4 January 2010 18:07 (fifteen years ago)

lol north carolina

mookieproof, Tuesday, 5 January 2010 02:55 (fifteen years ago)

they made 12 less threes than c of c & still only lost by three. haven't looked at the box score so i'm confused as to how it happened.

J0rdan S., Tuesday, 5 January 2010 02:59 (fifteen years ago)

it happened because bobby cremins is magical, apparently

mookieproof, Tuesday, 5 January 2010 03:01 (fifteen years ago)

well they shot 28 more fts & outrebounded them by 20, yes plus cremins

can i just say that i love everything about kansas state?

1) their coach is hilariously unglued
2) they call their arena the "octagon of doom"
3) they wear purple for no apparent reason
4) they just went for it and put "k-state" on the uniforms
5) they use terrible italics block font

they're cheesy and have no tradition to speak of. it's awesome.

I apologize to people who had to watch Georgetown-ND. Austin Freeman is normally better than that, but he was sick or w/e. But really in general the Hoyas have every chance of making the Final Four and every chance of losing to a 12 or a 13 seed in the first game.

idgi, mon (k3vin k.), Saturday, 27 February 2010 21:06 (fifteen years ago)

I am not sure if I mentioned it on the med school thread, since I sometimes get all paranoid and figure it is pretty easy to identify someone going by their initials from amongst a small group of students. (It really is!) But yeah I use my student section seats here to make up for the loss of my beloved Pac-10. <3 Greg Monroe and <3 Austin Freeman, though.

C-L, Saturday, 27 February 2010 21:20 (fifteen years ago)

i haaaate georgetown - when i was a kid my basketball coach/dentist was a former syracuse basketball player (i grew up in upstate ny) and instilled a strong hoya hatred in me. now i go to uconn and root against both SU and georgetown, all love for you and the med school tho <3

idgi, mon (k3vin k.), Saturday, 27 February 2010 21:36 (fifteen years ago)

It is all good as you do not like the USC Trojans. UConn still gets love from me due to the 1999 team, and Syracuse even has the ridiculous mascot + Carmelo + Jonny Flynn playing like a man last year. It is totally fun to get swept up in a current of Big East hatred during the games themselves, though. Hating on all the white three-point specialists who play hacky defense is A+ fun.

C-L, Saturday, 27 February 2010 22:39 (fifteen years ago)

yeah i find it hard to root against syracuse becuase i was such a huge fan growing up and was so attached to that '03 championship team. last year over spring break i was in new orleans with about 60 students from my school at a volunteer shelter populated by kids from all over the country, and watching that 6-overtime game with all of them and about 30 syracuse kids was one of the most memorable sports-related moments of my life. and yes their mascot! got no problems rooting against georgetown, tho, and in fact a girl i grew up with from my highschool (class val actually) is pre-med there now and we used to talk shit about basketball to each other

idgi, mon (k3vin k.), Sunday, 28 February 2010 00:21 (fifteen years ago)

memphis is in a great location for football, they just have no cache being in conference usa and therefore can't compete with tennessee, bama, arkansas, mississippi schools etc when it comes to talent

It's hard to say though, because they went 8-4 before conference play, and the losses were to Syracuse (1 seed), Ohio State (2 seed), Kansas (1), and New Mexico (3). But they lost 5 games in conference, and I guess that's unacceptable this year.

When UCLA is not playing I tend to support the Pac-10 also, but this year that really only means Cal, because I don't like this year's Washington Huskies. Isaiah Thomas irks me, and Justin Holiday reminds me that his brother exists.

I watched the Big East and Pac-10 more than anything else this year and would not have really guessed that the Pac-10 would go 2-0 vs the soft middle of the Big East like they did yesterday and today. I don't think that means they are gonna go any further than this weekend but still.

When I read the Villanova had the 268th best defence in the country or whatever I assumed they just played at a really fast pace, and they do, but also wow does that team not defend at all.

Between the ILX Fantasy Baseball draft and watching C-Span, somehow I just now realized that Cornell won today! I love the opening paragraph from the NYT account:

Cornell players jumped up and down near midcourt, exchanging chest-bumps and high-fives, then ran toward their fans.

And stood around.

I'd do the same, I suppose.

It probably took me like three or four times to really appreciate Mbah a Moute's diving steal on Raivio, but that is probably my favorite play in the whole insane sequence. I kinda feel like Mbah a Moute was really the key to the three straight Final Four runs (although Afflalo is my favorite player ever). There was a stretch in 2008 where he was gone and the Bruins suddenly were no longer able to win games just on defense. But that was the year UCLA had Kevin Love and had several questionable calls go in our favor, so it didn't blow up the season.

xp that image is my avatar on any msg board allowing avatars. More for Afflalo than for Morrison, although still LOL @ Morrison. And it was my Facebook profile photo until 2008 (when I started at a new school and some people got confused I wasn't black).

nerds lol

SYRACUSE, NY—Despite overcoming long odds as the lowest seed remaining in the NCAA Tournament, Cornell's basketball team had on Wednesday squandered most of its underdog goodwill by using every opportunity to explain that, given a finite set of possible outcomes and a sufficient period of time, the sheer quantity of opportunities available to accomplish an improbable outcome makes its achievement likely if not almost certain. "It'd be foolish to ascribe any of the properties of a pan-dimensional function space to the NCAA Tournament," said Cornell center Jeff Foote, who has averaged 14 points per game in the first two rounds. "However, bear in mind that we're not talking about a null probability space. With eight teams in the Ivy League and 65 in the tournament, you eventually run out of possible permutations. One could even make the case for historical inevitability; we won, so we were always going to win. I think my good friend Baron d'Holbach would agree—that's decidedly nonzero. Decidedly." Foote excused himself after the interview upon receiving a fifth rejection-of-transfer letter from Harvard.

I don't think anyone can say that the refs have helped duke this game with their amont of free throws.

Jeff, Sunday, 4 April 2010 02:39 (fifteen years ago)

nah, wvu is a good match up for duke -- no real big men to speak of, none of their players are particularly quick & they're just getting screened to death

J0rdan S., Sunday, 4 April 2010 02:40 (fifteen years ago)

And that bs tech...

Jeff, Sunday, 4 April 2010 02:42 (fifteen years ago)

eh not sure what miles was doing there, his momentum wasn't going to carry him + that ref is a notorious tech caller (he called one in the elite 8, forget on who)

back to what i was saying -- it was pretty obv i think that duke was gonna be able to swing this game like they have -- wvu is playing the same way they did against kentucky but duke is never gonna shoot 1/22 from 3, which is really what bailed wvu out in that game

J0rdan S., Sunday, 4 April 2010 02:46 (fifteen years ago)

College basketball is generally pretty good about calling techs for hanging off the rim, unless a dude is laying down under the basket. Plumlee was hanging there without much reason to be.

well tbf the smarm drips off him

jihad mane (J0rdan S.), Tuesday, 6 April 2010 03:52 (fifteen years ago)

The fact that this game was so heavy at the end that Nantz couldn't even drop a one-liner makes me hopeful he will narrate a winning putt by Tiger on Sunday at 18 by saying "You gotta do this for me. Huge. Quickly."

C-L, Tuesday, 6 April 2010 03:55 (fifteen years ago)

All is good in the world.

Jeff, Tuesday, 6 April 2010 04:08 (fifteen years ago)

singler was really impressive. i think i kind of mentally wrote him off way back when he was too hyped as an nba prospect, but he really is about all you could hope for as a college player.

I have no idea if Scheyer is a decent dude or an asshole or what, but maaaaaan that is such a punchable face.

OTOH my only problem with Kyle Singler is that he doesn't have that sweet floppy hair he had going in Gunning For That #1 Spot.

http://opinionator.blogs.nytimes.com/2010/04/07/redefining-what-it-means-to-work-hard/

David Brooks: A few hours after that atrocity of opening day, Duke went on to beat Butler for the national championship. You should know that Duke is one of my alma maters. I am very generous in my definition of alma maters. I claim that affiliation with any school I went to, taught at, lived near (Villanova and St. Johns) or parked at.

Unlike 90 percent of America, I was rooting for Duke last night. This was widely cast as a class conflict — the upper crust Dukies against the humble Midwestern farm boys. If this had been a movie, Butler’s last second heave would have gone in instead of clanging off the rim, and the country would still be weeping with joy.

But this is why life is not a movie. The rich are not always spoiled. Their success does not always derive from privilege. The Duke players — to the extent that they are paragons of privilege, which I dispute — won through hard work on defense.

Gail Collins: I’m sorry, when the difference is one weensy basket, I’d say Duke won neither by privilege nor hard work but by sheer luck. But don’t let me interrupt your thought here. I detect the subtle and skillful transition to a larger non-sport point.

David Brooks: Yes. I was going to say that for the first time in human history, rich people work longer hours than middle class or poor people. How do you construct a rich versus poor narrative when the rich are more industrious?

☀ ☃ (am0n), Wednesday, 7 April 2010 20:51 (fifteen years ago)

srsly why is the american middle class and poor just so lazy these last 2 years?

What is the sociocultural equivalent of flopping to take a charge?

C-L, Wednesday, 7 April 2010 21:08 (fifteen years ago)

you mean flopping after you shoot a three

goon with the wind (J0rdan S.), Wednesday, 7 April 2010 21:09 (fifteen years ago)

Either way. I feel like someone has compared the Euro-football flopping trend to some kind of creeping European socialism before, somewhere, come to think of it. I totally forget where, though.

C-L, Wednesday, 7 April 2010 21:11 (fifteen years ago)

RIP big 12, you were a pretty good basketball league, but our fine public educational institutions care more about football money than just about anything else.
