feels right to start this now after half the lottery has decided to go back to school

latest is perry jones, along w/ henson & zeller and most likely harrison barnes as well

the top 10 is gonna be irving, d williams, kemba & lots of euros -- nba teams are probably freaking out right about now

J0rdan S., Monday, 11 April 2011 21:59 (fourteen years ago)

no reason to freak, nba teams

A True White Kid that can Jump (Granny Dainger), Monday, 11 April 2011 22:48 (fourteen years ago)

josh selby seems to be indicating that even when the one-year plan goes horribly awry, it's still a one-year plan.

lance stephenson pt 2

J0rdan S., Tuesday, 12 April 2011 23:05 (fourteen years ago)

he's been in las vegas training for almost 2 weeks and surely not violating any ncaa regulations. i assume he'll get drafted somewhere, but he really would have as much to gain as anyone by going back to school and showing improvement.

circles, Thursday, 14 April 2011 03:56 (fourteen years ago)

derrick williams is officially in.

circles, Thursday, 14 April 2011 03:59 (fourteen years ago)

i'm not convinced that williams is gonna be a full time starter in the nba but in this draft he should be picked top 3 prob

J0rdan S., Thursday, 14 April 2011 06:00 (fourteen years ago)

Why are people staying? Lockout? Barnes is risking a lot, he'd be high this year if he stayed.

DIdn't the clipper throw in their unprotected pick as part of the Baron/Mo deal? I guess that was a pretty sign that people don't rate this draft. Still kinda pumped about BISMACK though!

Gravel Puzzleworth, Thursday, 14 April 2011 09:51 (fourteen years ago)

yeah no one is rating this draft outside irving and maybe walker as an off-the-bench ty lawson type. clips also didn't want the guaranteed salary of the lottery pick on the books- it's usually a bargain for most teams but if there's one thing the clips are drowning in for the next few years it's cheap young talent already locked up

i see you're still wearing bs on tv (agent hibachi), Thursday, 14 April 2011 19:02 (fourteen years ago)

okay calipari keeps the conveyor belt going, we've got knight, jones, and liggins in the draft but not hiring agents yet.

i'm actually kind of high on derrick williams. feel like he might be sort of like supercool beas with better mental state, make a few all star games.

this is ridiculous + amazing

sportsguy33 Bill Simmons

J0rdan S., Tuesday, 17 May 2011 16:24 (fourteen years ago)

i guess what's cool this year is that the lotto will actually influence who is picked #1? or maybe that makes it less cool

J0rdan S., Tuesday, 17 May 2011 16:25 (fourteen years ago)

that wolves factoid means they are definitely winning this particular lottery.

who's coming out next year?

THAT'S LIGHTWEIGHT DICKERY (dayo), Wednesday, 18 May 2011 02:59 (fourteen years ago)

well most likely three guys that would've been guaranteed top 5 picks this year (harrison barnes, perry jones, jared sullinger) + potentially a freshmen class that is really stacked

J0rdan S., Wednesday, 18 May 2011 03:03 (fourteen years ago)

some of those guys: kentucky's anthony davis (called the next KG), duke's/doc's austin rivers, baylor's quincy miller, florida's bradley beal (the next eric gordon) etc etc

"This league has a habit, and I am just going to say habit, of producing some pretty incredible story lines," Kahn said. "Last year it was Abe Pollin's widow and this year it was a 14-year-old boy and the only thing we have in common is we have both been bar mitzvahed. We were done. I told Kevin: 'We're toast.' This is not happening for us and I was right."

J0rdan S., Wednesday, 18 May 2011 06:13 (fourteen years ago)

obviously kahn needs to send a gay jewish transvestite to the next draft lottery to ensure the #1 pick

THAT'S LIGHTWEIGHT DICKERY (dayo), Wednesday, 18 May 2011 06:16 (fourteen years ago)

TBH given that I had zero hope of the Wolves winning, I am p.contented with a top 3 of Utah, Minnesotta and the Clippers having thrown in #1 overall just to get rid of Baron.

Gravel Puzzleworth, Wednesday, 18 May 2011 07:50 (fourteen years ago)

(The ugly thing is that basically every viable prospect at #2 plays PF which is also the position of our four best players at this point)

GOOGLE BUILDING 7

its realy sad he was a drowner (k3vin k.), Wednesday, 18 May 2011 14:07 (fourteen years ago)

yeah matt he is, pretty much. The bigger problem I see is that he's more suited to play PF than beasley but that would be a pretty small/weird defensive combo with love... plus they're paying darko a lot of money. Idk.

Simmons podcast w/ Chad Ford was interesting re minny. Simmons made the good point that Kahn has collected assets w/o any consideration to how they might play together. Like, he paid next to nothing for Beasley and Randolph, but those guys can't play together. Flynn is in a system that doesn't suit him. They tried wes johnson at the two for some reason. Kahn just has no plan.

J0rdan S., Wednesday, 18 May 2011 14:18 (fourteen years ago)

Johnson at the two was an awful idea but they had no other way to play him really once they got Beasley - 10 minutes a night behind the team's second best player wouldn't really justify a #4 pick?

Maybe they could trade #2 overall for having their pick back in '12.

Gravel Puzzleworth, Wednesday, 18 May 2011 14:44 (fourteen years ago)

I think in fairness to Kahn his plan was always to take the best players he could for the minimum price, and then trade the chips into a team - what went wrong was that no-one wanted to trade with him because he is crazy.

Gravel Puzzleworth, Wednesday, 18 May 2011 14:46 (fourteen years ago)

"Thanks to moving up from No. 6 to No. 3 with the draft pick they received from New Jersey, the Jazz have a much bigger and better outlook. A month after the cursed season of 2010-2011, general manager Kevin O’Connor almost smiled, while recognizing how much scrutiny — of him and by him — will be involved in the June 23 draft.

"The pressure’s on," O’Connor said, "but that’s OK."

It’s better than that. The Jazz now can land the young, talented center they need: Enes Kanter of Turkey via Kentucky. This also enables them to be more creative with their own pick (No. 12), which brings The Jimmer Issue into full bloom over the next five weeks."

This is weirdly certain of what's going to happen - I didn't know Kanter was even the consensus #1 center.

TAKE BRANDON KNIGHT

J0rdan S., Wednesday, 18 May 2011 16:34 (fourteen years ago)

he's the best balance of upside/risk in this relatively upside-less but very risky draft imo -- i think you could easily make an argument that he should be taken ahead of kyrie

J0rdan S., Wednesday, 18 May 2011 16:35 (fourteen years ago)

I think in fairness to Kahn his plan was always to take the best players he could for the minimum price, and then trade the chips into a team - what went wrong was that no-one wanted to trade with him because he is crazy.

― Gravel Puzzleworth, Wednesday, May 18, 2011 10:46 AM (1 hour ago) Bookmark

ford says on this podcast that the bizarre thing about this is that kahn genuinely believed that the team would be good -- he used the example of danny ainge, who was collecting assets but had no delusions of those assets being worth anything in the short term, whereas kahn was expecting the wolves to be competitive this year

J0rdan S., Wednesday, 18 May 2011 16:36 (fourteen years ago)

also they touched on this & i think it's pretty intriguing & that's looking to trade rubio for a 2012 lottery pick (simmons throws out the clippers, which actually makes a ton of sense)

J0rdan S., Wednesday, 18 May 2011 16:37 (fourteen years ago)

i wonder what color the sky is on david kahn's planet.

call all destroyer, Wednesday, 18 May 2011 16:51 (fourteen years ago)

Yeah, I find it really hard to figure out Kahn's "genuine beliefs" 'cos he'll say the craziest stuff ("Darko is on track to be an all-star next season") and it's just totally unclear whether it's a) To boost Darko's confidence, b) To save his own job, c) To raise Darko's trade value, or d) he actually thinks this is true - like, if the consensus #2 player were a center this draft, would the wolves be taking him? I honestly have no idea.

Gravel Puzzleworth, Wednesday, 18 May 2011 21:38 (fourteen years ago)

also they touched on this & i think it's pretty intriguing & that's looking to trade rubio for a 2012 lottery pick (simmons throws out the clippers, which actually makes a ton of sense)

This would be such a catastrophic admission of failure though - simultaneously "we cannot persuade a guy getting 20 non-starter minutes a night to come and play in the NBA" and "we intend to suck next season for the third year in a row, hope u guys weren't too attached to Kevin Love".

Gravel Puzzleworth, Thursday, 19 May 2011 09:12 (fourteen years ago)

well yeah but sometimes that has to happen -- chris wallace admitted failure when he dealt thabeet but it netted him a pretty good player

J0rdan S., Thursday, 19 May 2011 11:35 (fourteen years ago)

i just feel like we're caught in some inescapable black hole of sucking it's so goddamn depressing, i don't even have ideas of what they should do anymore, you know? like i can't wrap my head around the enormity of how bad the timberwolves are

Blink 187um (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Friday, 20 May 2011 17:26 (fourteen years ago)

Utah next season could potentially be Harris/Jimmer/Hayward/Favors/Biyombo! That is a young and hilarious team.

Gravel Puzzleworth, Saturday, 21 May 2011 10:54 (fourteen years ago)

Granger for Beasley/Rubio/2nd? Poor DG.

Gravel Puzzleworth, Saturday, 21 May 2011 10:57 (fourteen years ago)

apparently rubio played like shit this past season and a lot of people in the nba are really down on him now - most of the hype was based on his crazy athleticism but hes always had some huge holes in his game that havent really gotten better.

farty f baby (Princess TamTam), Saturday, 21 May 2011 12:24 (fourteen years ago)

Crazy athleticism is hard to teach. Holes in one's game are more a matter of application and willingness to work. Rubio's young. There's still hope.

interesting -- a lot of ppl don't see williams as a 3

J0rdan S., Saturday, 28 May 2011 20:17 (fourteen years ago)

if the cavs can still suck as much as possible next year & pick up a legit star in the top 3 they'd def have something

J0rdan S., Saturday, 28 May 2011 20:19 (fourteen years ago)

a team of *star from 2012 draft * irving, williams & hickson could be about something

J0rdan S., Saturday, 28 May 2011 20:20 (fourteen years ago)

yeah it seems like the draft is such that it's worth taking a gamble on him becoming a 3 because you're not going to be able draft a "proper" 3 who is also an impact player.

call all destroyer, Saturday, 28 May 2011 20:21 (fourteen years ago)

yeah -- at worst either him or hickson becomes a super sixth man

J0rdan S., Saturday, 28 May 2011 20:22 (fourteen years ago)

I have no idea where the Wolves are gonna find the garbage time for another two prospects but I definitely prefer sticks pin at random into Knight/Biyombo/Vassely/Kanter tier to Kahn makes decision.

three weeks pass...

things like this, they just disturb me (from chad ford piece):

Speaking of Fredette, don't count out the Sacramento Kings as a possible destination. In the past few days there's been a spate of articles emphasizing that both Kemba Walker and Kawhi Leonard are higher on their Big Board. True. But that's Geoff Petrie's Big Board. The Maloofs, who own the team, are looking to make a splash. I'm not saying they'll force Petrie's hand, I'm just saying that Fredette is still strongly in the mix there.

Chad Ford: "Still hearing the Wolves are hoping to get a great offer for the No. 2 pick. Hearing the best one they have right now is from Phoenix (Marcin Gortat and the No. 13 pick)."

Sorta think they should take this deal.

polyphonic, Tuesday, 21 June 2011 19:24 (thirteen years ago)

They should take Gortat straight up! He's an NBA starter at their worst position, why would you refuse that.

Gravel Puzzleworth, Tuesday, 21 June 2011 20:50 (thirteen years ago)

that'd be a pretty good deal. get an above average center for a team that really needs one. and they'd get someone with the 13th. don't know why they'd get more than that from anyone sane.

circles, Tuesday, 21 June 2011 21:34 (thirteen years ago)

no, that would be crazy

frogbracist (J0rdan S.), Tuesday, 21 June 2011 22:09 (thirteen years ago)

gortat is decent but even in this draft you don't trade the #2 overall pick for what's going to amount to like the 12th best center in the nba + a backup swingman

frogbracist (J0rdan S.), Tuesday, 21 June 2011 22:10 (thirteen years ago)

^^

Clay, Tuesday, 21 June 2011 22:13 (thirteen years ago)

Let's say for the sake of argument that Williams is off the board. Then do you do the trade?

polyphonic, Tuesday, 21 June 2011 22:22 (thirteen years ago)

draft Irving and move him later. Irving's value is far greater than gortat's.

Clay, Tuesday, 21 June 2011 22:23 (thirteen years ago)

simmons & chad ford debated this on their podcast today -- simmons was arguing that the cavs should take williams bcuz the wolves will not take irving, even tho they're adamant that they will, but i still think you can't risk getting stuck w/ kemba at 4 if irving & knight go off the board

anyway, i think if that happened that the wolves would have to look hard at trading but i would still take my chances on kanter over gortat & the #13

frogbracist (J0rdan S.), Tuesday, 21 June 2011 22:26 (thirteen years ago)

It would be incredible if they drafted Irving and traded him, only two years after they drafted Ty Lawson and traded him.

polyphonic, Tuesday, 21 June 2011 22:26 (thirteen years ago)

i'm not sure if they could do that w/ irving bcuz they'd get lowballed like fuck -- i think they'd have a better chance of a team overpaying in the 5 minute mad dash to get up to #2 to take irving than if the wolves took him & the dust settled

frogbracist (J0rdan S.), Tuesday, 21 June 2011 22:28 (thirteen years ago)

the other problem is that after the draft you'd have to eliminate as trade partners whichever teams took knight, walker, jimmer, jackson, shumpert, brooks, selby etc etc

frogbracist (J0rdan S.), Tuesday, 21 June 2011 22:28 (thirteen years ago)

If Irving drops you just take Irving and Ricky Rubio is your backup point guard, you trade him at midseason for, hey, Marcin Gortat or someone, I don't see how this is even a thing.

This idea is pretty interesting to me too - I'd love to see him succeed - but I'd be kind of amazed, like Flynn last season was so so strikingly bad - the gap between him and Ridnour was cataclysmic and Ridnour is a backup PG - he could get a lot lot better and still not belong in an NBA rotation. Has anyone ever returned from that extent of "shook"?

Gravel Puzzleworth, Tuesday, 21 June 2011 22:55 (thirteen years ago)

the warriors are in an okay place -- they're right in the position in this draft where the 2 guards (thompson, burks) should come off the board & they can still get rid of monta at some point during the year

frogbracist (J0rdan S.), Tuesday, 21 June 2011 22:55 (thirteen years ago)

jag goo (k3vin k.), Wednesday, 22 June 2011 02:04 (thirteen years ago)

i don't mind spurs trading TP if they get a PG in return. they have no true PGs besides him (GH still learning how to run an offense, manu runs the point at times but guards the 2). neal is a classic 2.

ice cr?m, Wednesday, 22 June 2011 18:57 (thirteen years ago)

Chad Ford (1:39 PM)

Hold on again ... another call. Sorry.

ice cr?m, Wednesday, 22 June 2011 18:57 (thirteen years ago)

kemba seems like he could fall but not far. If he lasts til the teens no way a borderline playoff team doesn't snatch him up.

Clay, Wednesday, 22 June 2011 19:06 (thirteen years ago)

i wish i saw kemba do other things in college besides dominate the ball.

call all destroyer, Wednesday, 22 June 2011 19:09 (thirteen years ago)

Jonas Valanciunas is supposed to drop because he's staying abroad next year, but there could still be a team that doesn't mind waiting.

And yeah I think its enis like Dennis

frogbracist (J0rdan S.), Wednesday, 22 June 2011 19:40 (thirteen years ago)

The one thing about ball dominating college players is that they often have to put their playmaking skills on the backburner cuz they need to score almost every time down -- #1 example imo is Steph curry

frogbracist (J0rdan S.), Wednesday, 22 June 2011 19:42 (thirteen years ago)

yeah--that's the gamble with kemba, we just don't know.

Not sure I quite believe this yet, but Minnesota is apparently telling NBA teams that they are taking Enes Kanter #2 over Derrick Williams.

Why would you tell everyone your draft pick? What is the point of that? Is this some bluffing thing? This fucking franchise.

Gravel Puzzleworth, Wednesday, 22 June 2011 21:59 (thirteen years ago)

I don't understand why GMs say anything at all. Why not keep the other teams guessing as much as possible?

ice cr?m, Thursday, 23 June 2011 14:53 (thirteen years ago)

The Cleveland Cavaliers have the No. 1 and No. 4 picks in the draft. But will they also snag another lottery pick?

Sources say the Cavs have been very actively trying to do just that, with a massive $14.5 million trade exception as the device. The offer? Give us your pick and we'll take back a bad contract into our trade exception, which permits the Cavs to take back salary of more than $14 million.

polyphonic, Thursday, 23 June 2011 16:46 (thirteen years ago)

wow they could prob get a v top pick for that under the right circumstances

ice cr?m, Thursday, 23 June 2011 16:50 (thirteen years ago)

Biedrins? Okur? Kirilenko? Maggette? Hamilton? Lots of possibilities.

ice cr?m, Thursday, 23 June 2011 16:57 (thirteen years ago)

I like the idea of just going all in on a "bad" draft. Definitely a good buy low opportunity, considering some of the previous bad drafts turned out to be good drafts, and it's not like the Cavs are loaded with talent anyway.

polyphonic, Thursday, 23 June 2011 16:58 (thirteen years ago)

Also very wise to give up the trade exception / cap space in a year with slim pickings in free agency.

polyphonic, Thursday, 23 June 2011 16:59 (thirteen years ago)

yeah i agree, im totally skeptical of any bad draft formulation, like it just takes a couple guys out performing their assumed potential by 25% to turn it into a good draft

hmmm i wonder how much a top pick in this draft is worth, $14m is a lot, end of the 1st round picks have been selling for ~$3m in recent years iirc - it almost seems like 14 might be too much for the pistons #8 pick

pearsonic, Friday, 24 June 2011 02:36 (thirteen years ago)

kahn's strategy is pretty transparent actually -- he doesn't want any more young players, so he's basically took a pick that he had against his own will (the #20) and kept trading back & back until it functionally doesn't exist

ice cr?m, Friday, 24 June 2011 02:39 (thirteen years ago)

it's not really a crazy strategy -- i mean it's been funny to watch, but i don't think there's really anything wrong with punting a pick

teams do it all the time by picking rando international players -- kahn just kept trading his back

frogbracist (J0rdan S.), Friday, 24 June 2011 02:39 (thirteen years ago)

my parents are friends with this Indian couple who have this rule that if you give them a gift they will ALWAYS send something back a week later. you send baby clothes, you get a teapot. you send earrings, you get an MP3 player. it's so fun to give them gifts because you never have any idea what you're getting back. kinda wondering if this is Kahn's draft strategy?
