How far will Syracuse make it without Melo?

dandydonweiner, Thursday, 15 March 2012 19:43 (thirteen years ago)

I would just like to put in my annual reminder that, contrary to popular wisdom, these games are way worse to watch than any solid NBA matchup. But if you enjoy botched alley-oops and endless perimeter passing

the prurient pinterest (Hurting 2), Thursday, 15 March 2012 19:59 (thirteen years ago)

Hey, Bruce Hornsby in the stands at UNC-Ashville v Syracuse!

the prurient pinterest (Hurting 2), Thursday, 15 March 2012 20:12 (thirteen years ago)

Syracuse is really killing them on rebounds. Too bad they can't make a shot to save their lives.

There are five NBA games on tonight. I guarantee you that in at least three of them you will see an intensity and level of basketball that blows all of today's games out of the water.

several bad calls that went against asheville

what a shame, cuse is a joke anyway

3hunn O))) (J0rdan S.), Thursday, 15 March 2012 21:41 (thirteen years ago)

weird lane violation call, terrible out-of-bounds call, etc.

still pretty amazing that asheville did so well with their leading scorer in the tank

3hunn O))) (J0rdan S.), Thursday, 15 March 2012 21:44 (thirteen years ago)

man that asheville ending was depressing

especially since I picked them as an upset in the first round and they came so close

the prurient pinterest (Hurting 2), Thursday, 15 March 2012 21:46 (thirteen years ago)

Can someone explain the benefit of the ridiculong shot clock in NCAA? I see so many plays where they kill like 10 seconds passing back and forth btw the same two dudes with no other significant changes in court position for the team.

the prurient pinterest (Hurting 2), Thursday, 15 March 2012 21:48 (thirteen years ago)

I can't watch Harvard/Vandy, what's the deal

I see my boys are down 10 but shouldn't Vandy have scored more than 33 pts in the half if things were dire?

thuggish ruggish Brahms (DJP), Thursday, 15 March 2012 21:48 (thirteen years ago)

harvard/vandy was pretty tight until the end of the half iirc

johnny crunch, Thursday, 15 March 2012 22:05 (thirteen years ago)

the $3.99 thing is really worth it. I wish the NBA would offer something that was the same price per game and had no blackouts

this whole iowa state team is fun to watch

Moreno, Friday, 16 March 2012 02:47 (thirteen years ago)

think white's a little bit of a headcase, but he makes that team go when he's on.

circles, Friday, 16 March 2012 02:52 (thirteen years ago)

I went to ISU. White has clinical anxiety and is on meds, there's all kinds of real issues with him. He's also the second best passer in the NCAA this year (next to UNC's Marshall.) Oh, and his move to the bucket is as good as anyone playing.

ISU can play with anyone. Zero 3 pointers in the second half against UConn, so I don't need to hear from anyone that they only win on their 3 point game. They're not going to beat Kentucky, unfortunately.

dandydonweiner, Friday, 16 March 2012 11:14 (thirteen years ago)

3hunn O))) (J0rdan S.), Friday, 16 March 2012 23:44 (thirteen years ago)

i don't really understand them -- they are actually pretty athletic! yet they suck

poor coaching amirite

mookieproof, Friday, 16 March 2012 23:46 (thirteen years ago)

they're just super unskilled... i'm not sure whose fault that is

the darker haired one is athletic enough to be a pretty good rebounder but whenever they play other good bigs (zeller, reggie johnson) they get dominated

3hunn O))) (J0rdan S.), Friday, 16 March 2012 23:48 (thirteen years ago)

lehigh guy just body blocked duke shooter, nice

are chads electorate (brownie), Friday, 16 March 2012 23:49 (thirteen years ago)

3hunn O))) (J0rdan S.), Friday, 16 March 2012 23:50 (thirteen years ago)

i'm trying to think of anything more toxic than nantz & kellogg calling duke

3hunn O))) (J0rdan S.), Friday, 16 March 2012 23:52 (thirteen years ago)

one becomes accustomed to a duke team with maybe one player who can create his own shot, or one that lives and dies by three-point shooting

this team sucks at defense as well, tho

"I've never seen anything like it," Lehigh forward Justin Maneri said with a deep laugh. "We came to the practice the other day and as soon as you walked in they were going crazy for us and we're like, 'What's going on?' They were like, 'Go Lehigh, beat Duke!' They were screaming. It was nice to have fans here that weren't Duke. I've never seen two schools that hate each other so much."

"We had 56 people on our ticket list," Norfolk State assistant coach Robert Jones said. "We had 56 fans. By the end of the game, there were 10,000.

Tickets for UNC - Duke are always scalped for $500 - $1000. And that's twice a season. I can't think of another college rivalry so intense.

Also, things like this intensify the hatred. Fuck the refs who shamelessly allowed it all season.

I don't know how many times with the clock going down this weekend clubs just needing a basket settling for some at best 35% long range bomb instead of pushing it inside to go for the shot and see what happens. Driving it down to shoot - it might go in, you might get fouled, it might be like in the IU game and get knocked out to your own guy...either way, I bet it is a better chance of success (either scoring or going to the line combined) than just launching one up half cocked from the 3 line.

The 3 line is crack for some college teams and I think it leads to some bad shots.

UK plays like tonight, no one is going to beat them. They got everything: inside game, shooting, defense and tonight they just lit up the charity stripe. IU played a pretty good game for the most part, but once the fouls piled up and Oladipo had to go to the bench, they just couldn't hang.

earlnash, Saturday, 24 March 2012 06:50 (thirteen years ago)

Glad they called those fouls early on Zeller to reign him in. Dude plays dirty and doesn't have to. Can't see anyone beating Kentucky, either.

Any team is beatable, but Kentucky looks like the best team still in the running. I don't have a beef against the UK players. Lamb looked especially underrated as an efficient role player against Indiana. But fuck Calipari with a nightstick.

mookieproof, Sunday, 25 March 2012 23:32 (thirteen years ago)

This put me in the uncomfortable position of rooting for Ohio State. Bill Self's smirk needs to be permanently wiped off his face.

Kentucky/Louisville should be kinda fun. Not that I care for either team or coach, but the stands should be filled with all sorts of hate.

Really wanted Stilman White to rise to some mythical place in Tar Heel history. At least it wasn't his fault that they last. No turnovers in two games from a third-string point guard is nothing to be ashamed of.

john. a resident of chicago., Sunday, 25 March 2012 23:54 (thirteen years ago)

Thankfully White didn't step on his dick, but he was a liability the whole game because his vision of the court is pretty narrow and KU guards ran all over UNC--the Tar Heels looked like they were learning an offense the last 10 minutes. Who the hell draws up an offensive set that has the #4 and #5 men up on the three point line for much of the shifting. DUMB.

Three of my least favorite coaches in the sports world are now left (Calipari the Cheater, Facelift Pitino, and Self) so needless to say, I'm not looking forward to the Final Four.

J0rdan S., Monday, 26 March 2012 21:46 (thirteen years ago)

J0rdan S., Monday, 26 March 2012 22:02 (thirteen years ago)

also injuries are injuries but i'm kinda surprised that roy isn't catching more flak for not having someone even 10% as good as kendall marshall backing him up. PG is the most important role in his offense and his back up plan was stilman white??

J0rdan S., Monday, 26 March 2012 22:03 (thirteen years ago)

ppl in my office today were talking about how roy was outcoached by bill self (despite self not being much of an in-game coach).

i dunno, i didn't see the game. i'd be reasonably pleased with seven assists and no turnovers from a guy who averaged six minutes this season tho, just from the line.

mookieproof, Monday, 26 March 2012 22:10 (thirteen years ago)

yeah i don't know, UNC almost lost to ohio. they clearly weren't gonna beat kansas w/o marshall. you could just as easily make the argument that it was a miracle that they were even that close.

J0rdan S., Monday, 26 March 2012 22:11 (thirteen years ago)

i mean seven assists and zero turnovers sounds okay on its face but... the guy is playing with literally seven potential first round picks. he wasn't doing anything but swinging the ball to really, really good basketball players. he had one good play where he slipped into the lane and hit henson for a dunk. but other than that he wasn't doing anything that any random bench guard off any team in america couldn't do, and that's not good enough for north carolina imo.

it's obviously not his fault, and to his credit up until the final desperation 90 seconds he didn't try and do anything he can't do (i.e. score) but they should've had someone better than him.

J0rdan S., Monday, 26 March 2012 22:15 (thirteen years ago)

> catching more flak for not having someone even 10% as good as kendall marshall backing him up
> they should've had someone better

Kendell Marshall started the year as Larry Drew's back up. When Larry Drew left the school in February, Dexter Strickland was Kendell Marshall's back up until he tore his ACL. Stilman White was effectively the fourth string point guard at the start of the year.

This KU season is pretty fucking awesome. Lose their two best players, two top recruits ruled ineligible and they're in the finals with a 7 man rotation.

the one thing about kentucky is like... they're kinda like the nuggets? they can look amazing at times but they don't have one player who can definitely get their own offense when things get really bogged down. prob their one achilles heel.

J0rdan S., Sunday, 1 April 2012 18:09 (thirteen years ago)

so i guess davis projects as a calmer, better-shot blocking kevin garnett? though the skinny young duncan comparison is intesting too, body-wise. davis seems like a good scorer, but maybe a more opportunistic one than a guy who can always get his own shot.

circles, Sunday, 1 April 2012 18:42 (thirteen years ago)

defensively he looks like garnett, offensively he looks a lot more like duncan

J0rdan S., Sunday, 1 April 2012 18:43 (thirteen years ago)

tho he's prob a bit more athletic than duncan? i'm too young to remember what timmy was like in college tho.

davis is pretty unique.

J0rdan S., Sunday, 1 April 2012 18:44 (thirteen years ago)

davis is frequently compared to camby

dayo, Sunday, 1 April 2012 18:45 (thirteen years ago)

i think he's frequently compared to camby in terms of "that's the absolute, worst case scenario" -- i don't think anyone thinks he's gonna be camby tho. he's gonna be way better all around.

J0rdan S., Sunday, 1 April 2012 18:46 (thirteen years ago)

his post game is p raw at this point which makes sense

lag∞n, Sunday, 1 April 2012 18:47 (thirteen years ago)

ehhh camby was a pretty beastly player who just happened to be made of glass xp

dayo, Sunday, 1 April 2012 18:48 (thirteen years ago)

yeah, but that's understandable considering his story xp

J0rdan S., Sunday, 1 April 2012 18:49 (thirteen years ago)

his turn around was looking very silky yesterday

J0rdan S., Sunday, 1 April 2012 18:49 (thirteen years ago)

cambys a great defender/rebounder but his offensive game was never for much

lag∞n, Sunday, 1 April 2012 18:49 (thirteen years ago)

― dayo, Sunday, April 1, 2012 2:48 PM (44 seconds ago) Bookmark

fair enough but there's still a big difference b/w garnett & duncan and a healthy, in his prime marcus camby. i think most scouts think davis has a great chance of being closer to the former.

yeah the shot looked good but you could see he was v slow and robotic gathering himself and making his move, which is fine when youre playing against college dudes but would get eaten up by pro defenses

the practice of repossessing schools wins is so silly, like yeah it never happened

lag∞n, Monday, 2 April 2012 16:33 (thirteen years ago)

Yeah, it is silly. But Calipari's image is too glossy, and that includes the image projected on him by most announcers. He should be forced to look like Smiegel to match his inner corruption. Bill Belichick's doing it right.

Sufjan Grafton, Monday, 2 April 2012 20:21 (thirteen years ago)
