itt fans of non-playoff teams chatter about the off season (2013)

All sad sacks congregate here to chew the fat about their team's exciting upcoming offseason. I expect very little from this thread before the end of June. In April the reality is still too painful.

The blazers need a center and their entire bench was pathetic this year. The only direction left to go is up.

Do we have to be fans of the teams

call all destroyer, Wednesday, 24 April 2013 17:52 (twelve years ago)

Dunlap was a last minute hire last year. It's not like he was their guy. They have a more attractive roster now, and so they're going to try to get the sort of name guy they were trying to get last year. It's nice that Dunlap tripled their win total but it's not hard to do better than the legendarily bad 2011-12 team. They still had the second-worst record in the NBA. Now they have another high lottery guy to add to the mix and some cap space. If they can get a name coach then they might have a better chance of attracting a significant free agent or two.

polyphonic, Wednesday, 24 April 2013 18:00 (twelve years ago)

Dunlap struck me as a Doug Collins type guy who is great at teaching fundamentals but probably not a good long term option.

"Personally, I don’t believe that you can live an openly homosexual lifestyle or an openly, like premarital sex between heterosexuals," Broussard said on ESPN's Outside The Lines. "If you’re openly living that type of lifestyle, then the Bible says you know them by their fruits. It says that, you know, that’s a sin. If you’re openly living in unrepentant sin, whatever it may be, not just homosexuality, whatever it maybe, I believe that’s walking in open rebellion to God and to Jesus Christ. So I would not characterize that person as a Christian because I don’t think the bible would characterize them as a Christian."

Have you found the world of media tough for you as a believer?

I can’t say for certain since I’ve always worked in the media, but I believe the world of media is probably like any other secular work environment (or school, for that matter) – full of unbelievers. Your beliefs, values and lifestyle often don’t jibe with those of your co-workers. Because journalists are perhaps more skeptical by definition, there may be even fewer people of faith in this business. Also, now that I’m fairly prominent on TV and thus, at times interacting with sports and pop culture celebrities, I must have my “spiritual guard” up as I navigate these worlds, where carnality is rampant.

During the Grizzlies' playoff run, tensions turned to a confrontation when Hollins exploded during a practice session upon finding Hollinger had walked onto the practice court and engaged forward Austin Daye during a shooting drill, multiple sources told Yahoo! Sports.

With the team watching – and with a motive to show his players that he was completely in charge on the floor, sources said – Hollins loudly questioned Hollinger about what he was doing, and why he believed it was appropriate for a management official to intrude on what's considered sacred territory for a coach and team, sources said.

call all destroyer, Saturday, 8 June 2013 14:09 (twelve years ago)

i think monta needs a reality check regarding what a team wants to pay him in 2013

J0rdan S., Saturday, 8 June 2013 14:51 (twelve years ago)

yeah it's certainly below what monta is looking for--i'm wondering if it's a given that some team will come along with a higher offer.

monta was born abt 12 years too late.

call all destroyer, Saturday, 8 June 2013 14:54 (twelve years ago)

Sounds like Bucks already made the decision to keep Jennings, so why not offer Monta a lowball offer to see if he takes it. Volume-shooting guards seem to always get overpaid during FA, so I'm sure someone is gonna offer him more $ or same money/more years.

Super curious about what will happen w/ Bynum this offseason. Since he has two major strikes against him -- prone to major injuries + not a team leader / coachable dude -- probably means he won't get max deal offers. Would love to see him on a vet / solidified team that needs an extra big. Can, uh ... Miami find a way to hire him for a year?

Also, has there been any Rondo trade talk? Kinda hoping Celtics looking to blow up the team w/ impending Garnett retirement and PP running out of gas soon; that said, since this draft is so weak, this probably isn't the right offseason to blow shit up for prospects.

i love rondo but he is kind of an icing on the cake guy

he would be awesome in houston w/harden, parsons et al i think

if i were a western gm i'd be trying to get him to defend parker/westbrook/conley and as a bonus if you already have a solid team you get to utilize PLAYOFF RONDO which is a whole different animal

joe smith avatar (agent hibachi), Saturday, 8 June 2013 15:57 (twelve years ago)

Any team w/o a solid locker room / established player leadership that throws either max money or max years to Andrew Bynum is begging for multiple lottery years. You cannot go anywhere w/ Bynum as your star player, full stop. And that's totally disregarding the fact that he's basically only played one full season his 7-year career.

Wish there were a package Nuggs could offer Celtics that could make sense.

lag∞n, Saturday, 8 June 2013 16:01 (twelve years ago)

Bynum is a really talented player who contributes zero positives to a team's culture, which is what you absolutely need to be a better-than-decent team. Bynum will absolutely never lead a team anywhere promising besides Lulzland.

Promise to forever gtfo w/ culture stuff as soon as there's a team lead to EC/WC finals by a bozo. Like, every single player/coach/gm says it's important, there's a shitton of anecdotal evidence that it's important, and this is a reminder that irl NBA ≠ your NBA 2K13 roster.

Again people forget that Bynum is technically a vet now and is still a total clown. Teams win w/ clowns on their roster, but not with clowns at their #1 guys (which Bynum would be if he were max'd out).

Guys like Sheed were also lucky to be on teams where he wasn't the #1 guy-- those Detroit teams were helmed by dudes like Billups and Ben Wallace and Rip and Tayshawn. Great teams can absorb clowns but can't be lead by them.

IM ME, I DO ME, AND I CHILL (CompuPost), Saturday, 8 June 2013 16:15 (twelve years ago)

J0rdan S., Saturday, 8 June 2013 16:32 (twelve years ago)

eh. i just don't know if on-balance bynum is "worth it"

J0rdan S., Saturday, 8 June 2013 16:35 (twelve years ago)

guys this is all moot bc we all know bynum is gonna play like 16 games over five seasons and retire so basically its just a question of which gm is dumb enough to hamstring his cap room for two years followed by a big buyout payment

joe smith avatar (agent hibachi), Saturday, 8 June 2013 16:35 (twelve years ago)

hes not worth it because his body cant withstand an nba season, if he could stay healthy there isnt a team in the league that wouldnt max him out

lag∞n, Saturday, 8 June 2013 16:36 (twelve years ago)

That's a good counterexample, but as asshatty as Dwight is, to even put him in Bynum's class is kind of a joke. Not to mention Bynum has never averaged 21/14/3 while playing a whole season and being an all-world defensive force.

Like, would love to be proved wrong and hear all sorts of great things about Bynum making the rest of his team work harder / push the rest of his team to be better, but this is totally antithetical to his career MO.

IM ME, I DO ME, AND I CHILL (CompuPost), Saturday, 8 June 2013 16:56 (twelve years ago)

xps what J0rdan said, basically, and I don't think Bynum will ever, ever be good enough to dominate a season and have margin of error to dog it a bit. But again, that Dwight/Magic team is totally a cogent counterexample.

IM ME, I DO ME, AND I CHILL (CompuPost), Saturday, 8 June 2013 17:05 (twelve years ago)

IM ME, I DO ME, AND I CHILL (CompuPost), Saturday, 8 June 2013 17:05 (twelve years ago)

defining something as 'over all' and 'mattering' are totally not the same thing, one is a weaker assertion than the other, and nor are culture and leadership the same

forget quantifiable first try even defining it, as it exists in basketball its mostly a story the media likes to tell, and like of course gm's like to pat themselves on the back for creating culture, if a players character flaws manifest in them being bad at basketball then fine, but the problem here is andrew bynum is really good at basketball

lag∞n, Saturday, 8 June 2013 17:08 (twelve years ago)

paul pierce started his career as a promising young player, then when the celtics sucked he was a disgruntled bum, then they won a title and he matured and proved himself, all these track perfectly of course to changes in the quality of his teammates, its stupid the nba is not a morality tale, its a skill game

side q to kevin k: was it a good idea to fire karl?

brimstead, Saturday, 15 June 2013 03:23 (twelve years ago)

it's difficult to hate the guy and i think he's a great regular season coach, especially (as matt called it earlier) as a manager of a group of knuckleheads like the nuggets, but at times it's obvious he doesn't really have a clue what lineups to put out there or who's playing well and who isn't, and it becomes obvious and more important come playoff time. and to go 2 or 3 games against the best shooter ever and leave him open off the ball is pretty damning as evidence that the dude didn't have a strategy in that series

k3vin k., Saturday, 15 June 2013 03:38 (twelve years ago)

Good points. speaking as a W's fan, that series was "fluke-y". The firing seemed like a panic move.

do coaches usually walk into the job like that? no time spent coaching d-league teams or something like that?

vdn jumped straight to head coach and i think has actually been mostly ok, certainly not a disaster, though he probably could have used a couple of years as an ass't under someone

ilh favorite hand down man down went straight from broadcaster to warriors head coach and has remarkably been pretty good!

i do think kidd will actually be fine because the other straight-to-coach examples are similar- longtime veteran point guards mostly. he also has experience playing for some very good coaches which i think is really a thing, and he's going to bring lawrence frank with him, who was cursed with that garbage pistons roster the last few years but i think is very good

no clue really but it has broussard all over it which means it's not actually happening

though they are definitely talking abt kg & pierce b/c they (clips) are desperately trying to impress cp3 before july 1st, so i wouldn't be surprised if they were just like "hey we need a coach too, if you trade us those guys doc is just gonna bail and do tv, can we just take him too?"

if i were danny and it were really happening i would rake the clips over the coals for it, doc is his best asset at this point

joe smith avatar (agent hibachi), Saturday, 15 June 2013 21:49 (twelve years ago)

xp yeah not knocking kidd at all, just that it seems weird to me that someone with zero formal experience gets employed in a position like that, particularly at a team with high expectations.

fit and working again, Saturday, 15 June 2013 22:01 (twelve years ago)

right, totally. as far as i can tell don nelson did it too- went straight to coach AND gm of the bucks! i think the pendulum is swinging more towards it lately b/c statistically brand new guys do about as well or better than retreads (i think there was a good zach lowe article on this recently), and someone along the way realized you can flip the role of asst coaches and use veterans there to shore up a new head coach versus using them as a training ground

i think we might have just also hit a saturation point by around 2010 where the retreads were fully retreaded and not going to go around again, a few possible guys coming up through the ass't ranks flunked out (iavaroni et al) and we're down to just a handful of proven veteran name head guys who are gonna cost a LOT to get in the seat (van gundys, phil), so there wasn't much downside to trying out some new blood

joe smith avatar (agent hibachi), Saturday, 15 June 2013 22:43 (twelve years ago)

i would bet in kidd's situation his former coaches might also have chipped in and said basically what the heck is he gonna learn as an ass't that he doesn't know as a 40 year old veteran already

joe smith avatar (agent hibachi), Saturday, 15 June 2013 22:43 (twelve years ago)

if they wanna try out new blood they should try importing some eurocoaches

i wanna be a gabbneb baby (Hungry4Ass), Sunday, 16 June 2013 15:47 (twelve years ago)

Thinking that former players don't have an instant leg up coaching-wise is a really strange POV. Would love to see some aggregate winning% stats of former NBA players vs. non. Obviously being a former player isn't a definite prereq or anything (of the final four teams this year, three -- Spo, Vogel and Pop -- never played NBA), but former players have a massive bank of info to draw from that non-players can't really have access to.

Really looking forward to Kidd's first year-- feel like it could be really intriguing watching him develop Deron Williams, although outside of him and Lopez that Nets roster isn't much fun. Have absolutely no idea what to expect from Kidd coaching. BUT PLEASE JKIDD PLEASE PLAYER/COACH A FEW GAMES PLEEEEEEEASE. Kidd filling that spot just means one less team that'll snatch up Brian Shaw; amazing the chips haven't fallen his way for past few offseasons. Not as surprised by Ewing continually getting passed over, though.

And holy fuck these weird Celtics/Clips trades. When was the last time a coach was used as tradebait?

IM ME, I DO ME, AND I CHILL (CompuPost), Sunday, 16 June 2013 17:26 (twelve years ago)

i don't really even understand the argument about coaches--spo played pro ball in germany, pop played for the air force and tried out for the '72 olympic team, vogel played jv at kentucky. basically all coaches are "former players," i'm not so sure it's important what level they played at.

call all destroyer, Sunday, 16 June 2013 19:43 (twelve years ago)

my question on this was based on my surprise at kidd's appointment. i figured the head coach of an nba team would be expected to have spent several years being an assistant or coaching lower league and/or foreign teams, regardless of playing experience. it seems this is the case for most coaches, but there have been plenty of exceptions.
