THE GLAZED DONUT FACE-OFF -- spurs! heat! it's the NBA finals 2014, where little fatasses happen

The Spurs look like a better constructed team with pieces that function very smoothly together. The Heat are more of an unpredictable makeshift team full of talented pieces that don't quite blend sometimes - although last season they had those 29 (or thereabouts) consecutive wins, so they are obviously capable of putting together a long run of outstanding play. That ensures it goes 6 or 7. No one's getting swept or humiliated.

To my mind, what could stop the Spurs would be injuries, or several of the Heat's role players like Allen, Battier, Birdman and Cole playing way above their heads for most of the series. I'm betting against that.

The NBA welcomed a new commissioner in David Stern, replacing Larry O'Brien on April 1, 1984. The Finals that season was also the last time the Finals used the 2-2-1-1-1 format before going to the 2-3-2 format in 1985.

In 2014, the Spurs and Heat will do battle in this year's NBA Finals. The Spurs were 62-20 during the regular season and the Heat were 54-28. The NBA welcomed a new commissioner in Adam Silver on February 1, replacing David Stern. This Finals will be, for the first time since 1984, using the 2-2-1-1-1 format.

i don't feel comfortable in this prediction but i'm going heat in 6

my reasoning

- the heat have been eviscerating good defenses the entire playoffs
- the heat's rotation is more settled than it normally is
- tony parker is hurt
- the heat have lebron james

spurs in 6, revenge for last year my estimate

spurs in 7

i just feel like predicting whether a series is going to go 6 or 7 is a meaningless distinction and basically comes down to luck. the question is whether the heat will win easily or in a tight series or the spurs will win easily or in a tight series

I'm not entirely sure the bobcats or nets or pacers count as great defenses this spring. Decent-to-good maybe, but the latter two weren't nearly as fresh as Miami going into their respective series and who even knows with Indy. They definitely had huge defensive lapses all series long.

but none of those teams had an offense remotely as solid as San Antonio's.

pacers & bobcats were top 6 defenses (brooklyn sucked) and the heat's o rating over the playoffs would've led the nba in the regular season

I also have a thing where like Miami won as exactly as many games as Houston and Portland, while playing about half their schedule against absolutely dire opposition. they could have been the sixth seed in the west. How badly would okc have trashed the pacers in a series? I think pretty badly. Miami got it to look competitive. Idk, it's hard to tell b/c the east/west thing might be fool's gold, too. xp

the heat also openly don't try in the regular season and play like 1/4 of the year w/o one of their best players

Agree that this is a tossup. It was a tossup last year and both teams are basically the same with minor offsetting improvements/regressions across the board.

ilh is one of the first things i read in the morning to see what happened the previous night (i live in europe). best board but i don't know much about hoops and i never get to see games because of time difference so i lurk. i think i outed myself as ilh lurker on last year's poll too. last year was better tho cos i lived in a time zone where the finals were broadcast m/l during my breakfast, tho having to go to work after game 6 was horrible (rooted for spurs last year, still do this year)

yeah i picked spurs and when i think about it enough i think spurs but my gut keeps telling me heat. jalen and jacoby were on the podcast kinda befuddled at everyone picking spurs as well. for a series that seems like a real tossup to me there's a bizarre amount of consensus.

yeah this is a really good point. it's also just really tough to pick against the team with arguably the 2 best players in the series, though the spurs did just beat OKC, so idunno.

yeah. they've eviscerated two top-10 defenses but the spurs offense will definitely test them.

but that said, if the lebron foul game doesn't happen the heat go 4-1, 4-1, 4-1 which is a huge swing from last year, esp wrt the east finals

also i agree with ∞ and have already said it several times but yeah the heat have basically not played an inarguably good team in a couple months

also like, in the three home games against the pacers this playoffs the heat hit top "we look totally unstoppable" gear for extended periods in games 3 and 4 and then for all of game 6. they could only do that last year once vs the pacers, and it was in game 7.

they pacers were very bad tho

but the pacers weren't the pacers by the time the east finals rolled around this year, the nets were completely cooked and coming off a difficult and long first round series, and the bobcats well you know xp to j

like those pacers that the heat looked unstoppable against still took them to six games. one month prior that same pacers team went to seven games against a hawks team that won ~40% of their games this year.

indiana's defense was still very good in the playoffs. it was off their regular season peak but still would've rated top 10 in the regular season.

I lurk here too, voted spurs in 6 or 7. I went to college in SA so they're my home team in a way. (& my fb feed is nuts with spurs fans right now, b/c a bunch of my college buddies stayed in south texas & spurs por vida)

also in europe for the next year+ so I can't watch the finals live unless I wake up stupid early. though one year I was in Turkey during the finals & woke up at a normal-ish early time to see a Shaq Kobe Lakers team live in the finals, which was really disorienting time-wise.

the heat's defense will definitely be tested, no doubt. they haven't played a good offensive team yet.

but like: the #1 off efficiency in the nba in the regular season was the clippers at 109. the heat in the playoffs are at 113.

that difference of ~4 efficiency points is the gap between the clippers and the knicks, who were the #10 offense in the regular season.

so the heat's competition has not been great. granted. but their offense is SMOKING teams. like, beyond unguardable.

what a team does against mediocre/bad competiton can be as telling as what it does vs good competition, and the heat in the playoffs have been like... better than the best offenses in the history of the nba.

do offensive and defensive ratings take into account strength of schedule b/c i think some of these eastern teams might have some highly inflated numbers

well it cld be compared to past playoff runs for instance

the only teams that have beaten that number in the playoffs going back to 2003 are the 09-10 suns and the 08-09 nuggets

this series, and especially this second game, have been super physical for both teams; i am expecting a brawl if they don't tighten up the officiating at least a little bit under the basket

one adjustment i feel like the spurs are m/l conceding those 10 footers to wade and they shd body him out a lil further

yeah idk i am a long time critic of the over determined view of basketball narratives but bron imo m/l needs to go thermonuclear in this series for the heat to win, obvs of course hes capable of doing that, the thing that might worry be if i were the heat is that through the first two games hes averaging 5.5 ft attempt which points to the fact that so far the spurs have done p good keeping him out of the paint, so i dont think its too much of a coincidence that he won the game on jumpers last night, that scenario is one i think the spurs can live with

he'll probably get more calls at home. if he goes to the rim in game 3 like he did in the first half of last night's game he'll probably shoot 5 free throws in the first quarter alone
