The Spurs look like a better constructed team with pieces that function very smoothly together. The Heat are more of an unpredictable makeshift team full of talented pieces that don't quite blend sometimes - although last season they had those 29 (or thereabouts) consecutive wins, so they are obviously capable of putting together a long run of outstanding play. That ensures it goes 6 or 7. No one's getting swept or humiliated.

To my mind, what could stop the Spurs would be injuries, or several of the Heat's role players like Allen, Battier, Birdman and Cole playing way above their heads for most of the series. I'm betting against that.

Spurs in 6 or 7.

put 'er right in the old breadbasket (Aimless), Sunday, 1 June 2014 18:34 (eleven years ago)

In 1984, the Celtics and Lakers did battle in that year's NBA Finals. The Celtics were 62-20 during the regular season while the Lakers were 54-28. The NBA welcomed a new commissioner in David Stern, replacing Larry O'Brien on April 1, 1984. The Finals that season was also the last time the Finals used the 2-2-1-1-1 format before going to the 2-3-2 format in 1985.

In 2014, the Spurs and Heat will do battle in this year's NBA Finals. The Spurs were 62-20 during the regular season and the Heat were 54-28. The NBA welcomed a new commissioner in Adam Silver on February 1, replacing David Stern. This Finals will be, for the first time since 1984, using the 2-2-1-1-1 format.

this poll is a cop out

le goon (J0rdan S.), Monday, 2 June 2014 15:50 (eleven years ago)

i don't feel comfortable in this prediction but i'm going heat in 6

my reasoning

- the heat have been eviscerating good defenses the entire playoffs
- the heat's rotation is more settled than it normally is
- tony parker is hurt
- the heat have lebron james

le goon (J0rdan S.), Monday, 2 June 2014 15:52 (eleven years ago)

spurs in 6, revenge for last year my estimate

Nhex, Monday, 2 June 2014 16:01 (eleven years ago)

spurs in 7

Look at this joke I've recognised, do you recognise it as well? (forksclovetofu), Monday, 2 June 2014 16:05 (eleven years ago)

i just feel like predicting whether a series is going to go 6 or 7 is a meaningless distinction and basically comes down to luck. the question is whether the heat will win easily or in a tight series or the spurs will win easily or in a tight series

k3vin k., Monday, 2 June 2014 16:29 (eleven years ago)

Last year I took the Spurs in 7 and a fat lot of good that did me.

put 'er right in the old breadbasket (Aimless), Monday, 2 June 2014 16:58 (eleven years ago)

- the heat have been eviscerating good defenses the entire playoffs

I'm not entirely sure the bobcats or nets or pacers count as great defenses this spring. Decent-to-good maybe, but the latter two weren't nearly as fresh as Miami going into their respective series and who even knows with Indy. They definitely had huge defensive lapses all series long.

but none of those teams had an offense remotely as solid as San Antonio's.

Clay, Monday, 2 June 2014 18:23 (eleven years ago)

pacers & bobcats were top 6 defenses (brooklyn sucked) and the heat's o rating over the playoffs would've led the nba in the regular season

the offense has been on fire

le goon (J0rdan S.), Monday, 2 June 2014 18:28 (eleven years ago)

I also have a thing where like Miami won as exactly as many games as Houston and Portland, while playing about half their schedule against absolutely dire opposition. they could have been the sixth seed in the west. How badly would okc have trashed the pacers in a series? I think pretty badly. Miami got it to look competitive. Idk, it's hard to tell b/c the east/west thing might be fool's gold, too. xp

Clay, Monday, 2 June 2014 18:29 (eleven years ago)

the heat also openly don't try in the regular season and play like 1/4 of the year w/o one of their best players

le goon (J0rdan S.), Monday, 2 June 2014 18:30 (eleven years ago)

that's fair, actually.

Clay, Monday, 2 June 2014 18:33 (eleven years ago)

yeah, the whole "sit creaky-ass Wade" strat this year really did make a difference

Nhex, Monday, 2 June 2014 18:34 (eleven years ago)

to counter tho SA hadn't played a single player more than 14 minutes in a game this entire year.

Clay, Monday, 2 June 2014 18:35 (eleven years ago)

the series is basically a toss up imo i just think the heat will win and if they do probably at home

le goon (J0rdan S.), Monday, 2 June 2014 18:39 (eleven years ago)

iirc wade's game started to deteriorate in the ECF last year and he was basically awful for much of the finals minus a few spurts? i forget

le goon (J0rdan S.), Monday, 2 June 2014 18:40 (eleven years ago)

I remember manu was completely awful throughout the finals last year but don't rc wade much

Clay, Monday, 2 June 2014 18:42 (eleven years ago)

xp it was even before then, I think. Wade's played much better this post-season

Nhex, Monday, 2 June 2014 18:43 (eleven years ago)

yeah manu was just so, so bad

he seems to be better too

le goon (J0rdan S.), Monday, 2 June 2014 18:43 (eleven years ago)

This somehow makes Riverside sound exotic

polyphonic, Monday, 2 June 2014 22:48 (eleven years ago)

Agree that this is a tossup. It was a tossup last year and both teams are basically the same with minor offsetting improvements/regressions across the board.

Spottie, Monday, 2 June 2014 23:19 (eleven years ago)

i think this will be a right series but if one team is going to blow the other one out, it's gonna be the spurs. if that makes sense

k3vin k., Monday, 2 June 2014 23:25 (eleven years ago)

makes sense but idk, both teams have blowout potential i think. not like the spurs have been playing perfectly, they got lit by okc a couple times. and TP isn't right so...

Spottie, Monday, 2 June 2014 23:31 (eleven years ago)

what's up with Parker? Sore ankles right? He's got another couple days of rest, might be fine by Thursday.

Clay, Monday, 2 June 2014 23:33 (eleven years ago)

probably but who knows, ankles can be weird

Spottie, Monday, 2 June 2014 23:35 (eleven years ago)

If Steph Curry can get apparently right, Parker can.

hi!
ilh is one of the first things i read in the morning to see what happened the previous night (i live in europe). best board but i don't know much about hoops and i never get to see games because of time difference so i lurk. i think i outed myself as ilh lurker on last year's poll too. last year was better tho cos i lived in a time zone where the finals were broadcast m/l during my breakfast, tho having to go to work after game 6 was horrible (rooted for spurs last year, still do this year)

Was a little surprised zach Lowe picked so spurs in 7 bc I thought for sure he would go with the combo of "defending champs until dethroned" plus "best player on the planet" but his argument that it was so so so close last year and Miami is arguable a little worse is I think the key one right now

Counter would be that wade is better this year and has gotten better each round (!) but the counter to that counter is that Manu has been great and he was an actual trash barrel with flames coming out the top at points last finals

yeah. they've eviscerated two top-10 defenses but the spurs offense will definitely test them.

but that said, if the lebron foul game doesn't happen the heat go 4-1, 4-1, 4-1 which is a huge swing from last year, esp wrt the east finals

le goon (J0rdan S.), Thursday, 5 June 2014 22:17 (eleven years ago)

Clay, Thursday, 5 June 2014 22:18 (eleven years ago)

also like, in the three home games against the pacers this playoffs the heat hit top "we look totally unstoppable" gear for extended periods in games 3 and 4 and then for all of game 6. they could only do that last year once vs the pacers, and it was in game 7.

like those pacers that the heat looked unstoppable against still took them to six games. one month prior that same pacers team went to seven games against a hawks team that won ~40% of their games this year.

Clay, Thursday, 5 June 2014 22:23 (eleven years ago)

indiana's defense was still very good in the playoffs. it was off their regular season peak but still would've rated top 10 in the regular season.

le goon (J0rdan S.), Thursday, 5 June 2014 22:24 (eleven years ago)

I lurk here too, voted spurs in 6 or 7. I went to college in SA so they're my home team in a way. (& my fb feed is nuts with spurs fans right now, b/c a bunch of my college buddies stayed in south texas & spurs por vida)

also in europe for the next year+ so I can't watch the finals live unless I wake up stupid early. though one year I was in Turkey during the finals & woke up at a normal-ish early time to see a Shaq Kobe Lakers team live in the finals, which was really disorienting time-wise.

Euler, Thursday, 5 June 2014 22:24 (eleven years ago)

the heat's defense will definitely be tested, no doubt. they haven't played a good offensive team yet.

but like: the #1 off efficiency in the nba in the regular season was the clippers at 109. the heat in the playoffs are at 113.

that difference of ~4 efficiency points is the gap between the clippers and the knicks, who were the #10 offense in the regular season.

so the heat's competition has not been great. granted. but their offense is SMOKING teams. like, beyond unguardable.

le goon (J0rdan S.), Thursday, 5 June 2014 22:27 (eleven years ago)

what a team does against mediocre/bad competiton can be as telling as what it does vs good competition, and the heat in the playoffs have been like... better than the best offenses in the history of the nba.

le goon (J0rdan S.), Thursday, 5 June 2014 22:30 (eleven years ago)

do offensive and defensive ratings take into account strength of schedule b/c i think some of these eastern teams might have some highly inflated numbers

omg u r out of control comparing full season numbers w 15 games what does it all mean

lag∞n, Thursday, 5 June 2014 22:32 (eleven years ago)

it's just for context. how would anyone know what "113" means as a number

le goon (J0rdan S.), Thursday, 5 June 2014 22:33 (eleven years ago)

well it cld be compared to past playoff runs for instance

lag∞n, Thursday, 5 June 2014 22:34 (eleven years ago)

the only teams that have beaten that number in the playoffs going back to 2003 are the 09-10 suns and the 08-09 nuggets

le goon (J0rdan S.), Thursday, 5 June 2014 22:35 (eleven years ago)

i still think it is important that the spurs have played 18 games against competition that is way better than anyone the heat have faced, "top 10 defense" or whatever. the bobcats knew they weren't winning a game, the nets were playing w/ other people's knees, and the pacers are actual crazy people.

Clay, Thursday, 5 June 2014 22:38 (eleven years ago)

sure, i'm not disputing that. though i bet the heat wouldn't have been taken 7 by the mavs.

le goon (J0rdan S.), Thursday, 5 June 2014 22:39 (eleven years ago)

yeah the heat wouldve had a hard time in the west imho, i mean everyone did it was stacked but they played some really exceptionally shitty competition, youd prob have to go back to the years the nets won the east to find worse competition

lag∞n, Thursday, 5 June 2014 22:40 (eleven years ago)

heat will 3peat because everyone always 3peats. has there ever been a repeat that did not then become a 3peat?

sufi john paxson (Sufjan Grafton), Thursday, 5 June 2014 22:42 (eleven years ago)

but the fact that their offense is playing at a rate aligned with the best offenses in nba history indicates that they would still be blitzing even good teams

and i think they'll blitz the spurs. we'll see what happens on the other end though.

le goon (J0rdan S.), Thursday, 5 June 2014 22:42 (eleven years ago)

that series with the mavs was weird and seemed to be more about history b/w the franchises than talent. and SA seems to start slow in rd 1 every year. since game 7 of that series they've been clicking in a fairly brutal fashion, disregarding a couple westbrook/kd freakout games in oklahoma.

Clay, Thursday, 5 June 2014 22:43 (eleven years ago)

or they cld revert to the mean

lag∞n, Thursday, 5 June 2014 22:44 (eleven years ago)

they'll almost certainly regress some. but even "some" would still leave the offense in a place of dominance.

1. LeBron James has shot 5-of-30 (16.7 percent) when Boris Diaw is guarding him over the past year.

Believe it! According to SportVU 3D player-tracking cameras, the portly Diaw was matched up with James for 8:43 in the regular season and the four-time MVP shot just 2-of-9 and scored just four points. Then we found out from ESPN Stats & Info video tracking of the 2013 Finals that James shot 3-of-21 against Diaw in the postseason, including 1-of-10 outside 10 feet. There might never be a LeBron James stopper for an entire game, but in a pinch? Diaw might be just the guy.

lol i want to believe

my gut feeling on this series is that nothing the spurs did to be "better" this year is going to be meaningful in a short series against the heat, leaving it as even as last year. so i have no reason to pick against the champs.

call all destroyer, Thursday, 5 June 2014 23:35 (eleven years ago)

I picked the Heat too, I feel the Heat still know it was but for the grace of Ray Allen that they took it last year and are gonna actively not let themselves fall into that hole again

nutty game; how the hell does a team have 23 turnovers and win by 15

the game went to donkeytown with 4 minutes left and Bron out when it was Spurs by 2. I wouldn't put any stock into the final but the good news for the Spurs is that they played pretty horribly and still managed a win (sort of a lucky one, but still)

the hell with anyone criticizing LeBron for this, he played really well and cramps are no joke. how bout we focus on the fact that he hardly ever gets hurt like this even though he's played basically an entire season's worth of playoff games and unlike anyone on the Spurs he goes for 40+ minutes a night.

"It was right in my wheelhouse," Ray Allen said.

"I don't care. I'm from Texas, man. We couldn't afford air conditioning in high school," Chris Bosh said.

"It reminded me of the days at Cameron Indoor at Duke before they got AC," Shane Battier said.

"It felt like I was playing in the European Championship. We never have AC in Europe so it didn't bother me at all," Tony Parker said.

The takeaway here, however, is that fatigue seems simply to cause cramps, without regard for hydration or Gatorade's secret sauce or preparation or anything other than your muscle being tired.

uh really? because when i recently had food poisoning and evacuated literally all the fluid in my body i was getting calf cramps while lying down motionless.

i can almost guarantee you the heat will come out flat on tuesday night and they can't fuck around with the spurs like they can every other team

le goon (J0rdan S.), Monday, 9 June 2014 04:03 (ten years ago)

another interesting development tonight was bron going Parker Stopper for the first time... i dunno if the spurs scored in any of those possessions (maybe the diaw corner 3?)

that was one of the best games I've ever seen james play; ridic versatility

Look at this joke I've recognised, do you recognise it as well? (forksclovetofu), Monday, 9 June 2014 06:54 (ten years ago)

Yeah bise Lebron cant play like THAT two more games in a row which means there is every possibility spurs can take game 3 or 4 in Miami. I don't know where the series goes after this but I'd put good money down on it being 2-2 going to game 5.

As Jordan noted this game was close but for a couple free throws and a couple of missed jumpers at the end. Also pop is the master and will figure out what to do next. (Force feed kawhi the ball the first half and force bron to guard him more? I dunno)

z-time champion (agent hibachi), Monday, 9 June 2014 11:41 (ten years ago)

this series, and especially this second game, have been super physical for both teams; i am expecting a brawl if they don't tighten up the officiating at least a little bit under the basket

Look at this joke I've recognised, do you recognise it as well? (forksclovetofu), Monday, 9 June 2014 13:45 (ten years ago)

the physicality is not that great imho makes for an uglier game, but not sure they have one hothead amongst them, be surprised to see too much chippiness

yeah this is the ultimate pro matchup, crazy how little animosity there is considering this is their second year in a row

lag∞n, Monday, 9 June 2014 14:10 (ten years ago)

one adjustment i feel like the spurs are m/l conceding those 10 footers to wade and they shd body him out a lil further

lag∞n, Monday, 9 June 2014 14:15 (ten years ago)

jordan, i don't think it's about mutual respect so much as it is that as close as this matchup looks to be that they'll need to take advantage of whatever they can to win... if the refs are giving them this degree of leeway, having birdman go enforcer under the rim or manu sprawl over wade on a fast break is all part of the game imo

Look at this joke I've recognised, do you recognise it as well? (forksclovetofu), Monday, 9 June 2014 14:17 (ten years ago)

hanging that game on lebron going supernova on offense is a red herring imo because idk clearly dude knew he was on one and was draining jumpers he knew he would make. he rarely if ever plays like that and i don't think any subsequent game is going to feature lebron taking multiple pull up threes in a quarter but missing. those points will be distributed elsewhere.

that both games were close is obv very important to keep in mind but if i was the spurs i'd worry more about the heat's defense. the spurs made 4 more threes and took 12 more shots but still would've lost by 6 had manu not made that meaningless shot at the end.

also they have to figure out someway to keep kawhi on the floor because it seems like lebron is torching boris

le goon (J0rdan S.), Monday, 9 June 2014 14:17 (ten years ago)

p sure that wasnt a four point shot and they dont even have those

lag∞n, Monday, 9 June 2014 14:19 (ten years ago)

i think pop should try giving danny green some burn on lebron. he might destroy him in the post but i think he could at least cut off his driving some. lebron was crazy aggressive and if he's gonna be like that green is feisty and quick and can absorb more fouls early than kawhi.

i think pop was smart to switch pick and rolls last night but then the heat started making chalmers the pick man which was very smart.

obv this match up is just incredibly compelling on a number of levels

le goon (J0rdan S.), Monday, 9 June 2014 14:22 (ten years ago)

yeah idk i am a long time critic of the over determined view of basketball narratives but bron imo m/l needs to go thermonuclear in this series for the heat to win, obvs of course hes capable of doing that, the thing that might worry be if i were the heat is that through the first two games hes averaging 5.5 ft attempt which points to the fact that so far the spurs have done p good keeping him out of the paint, so i dont think its too much of a coincidence that he won the game on jumpers last night, that scenario is one i think the spurs can live with

lag∞n, Monday, 9 June 2014 14:26 (ten years ago)

he'll probably get more calls at home. if he goes to the rim in game 3 like he did in the first half of last night's game he'll probably shoot 5 free throws in the first quarter alone

le goon (J0rdan S.), Monday, 9 June 2014 14:36 (ten years ago)

yeah obvs two games isnt too much to judge but the ol playoff cliche that theyll take away what you do best is def somewhat true

lag∞n, Monday, 9 June 2014 14:42 (ten years ago)

As we just discussed on @SportsCenter, I'm told money details in Cavs' pitch to John Calipari were closer to $80 million range over 10 years

Is that all

polyphonic, Monday, 9 June 2014 18:03 (ten years ago)

If that report is true, we shall all soon know exactly how venal John Calipari is. Meanwhile, the Cavs continue to burnish their reputation as incompetent idiots by chasing Calipari in the first place.

is the weird impulse to give calipari a second shot in the nba just 'he is currently winning alot in college' or 'players love to play with him! he's "down"!' or do ppl think calipari is some strategic genius? or is just his agent sending out feelers testing the market and actually only the really desperate/stupid teams would consider hiring calipari.

If/when the Spurs win is it gonna make any dent in the World Cup stuff in France

, Friday, 13 June 2014 10:50 (ten years ago)

thing is france is playing in the world cup on sunday evening so whatver happens the big news will be the result of that game, not nba finals. otherwise you'd hear about it in the news here and there yeah (i mean we heard about florida winning the final four when joakim noah was there and let me tell you, most people have no clue what college ball and march madness are).
tbh after france won the eurobasket last year, tp and diaw became more prominent in the news. tony parker was elected french sportsperson of the year for the first time because of that. but yeah sadly all this is prob gonna be drowned in WC news.

micah, Sunday, 15 June 2014 08:33 (ten years ago)

Tbf he got fouled a bunch by kawhi on that play but also (old timey Chris Paul interjects) 'pass the bawl'

z-time champion (agent hibachi), Sunday, 15 June 2014 12:52 (ten years ago)

Kawhi was incredible that game but my favorite thing abt the spurs these finals has been the random little tony-Boris two man games, they had one where Boris threw it back out of the post almost out of bounds, tony had to scramble for it, Boris immediately positioned himself on the elbow to get the pass tony had to throw to get it back in, tony immediately runs out to the arc to draw away his man so Boris can face up 1 on 1 and drive with a few seconds left on the shot clock, so amazing

z-time champion (agent hibachi), Sunday, 15 June 2014 12:55 (ten years ago)

I think them speaking only French on the court is legitimately fucking with whoever on Miami is defending them, they dunno whether to switch or stay home

Sufjan Grafton, Monday, 16 June 2014 05:18 (ten years ago)

thing i love about this one is that the spurs were supposed to be done years ago. those richard jefferson years were pretty rough in retrospect. their records were fine, but they couldnt get anything done in the playoffs. last 3 years with kawhi, danny green, tiago, boris, patty...3rd round, finals, champs. they found the right mix while all three of the original big 3 could contribute.

smooth hymnal (m bison), Monday, 16 June 2014 05:25 (ten years ago)

at this point, im all for keeping this whole team together one more year. do what theyve never done and repeat.

I'm surprised the Heat didn't have two wins in them. I'm gratified the Heat did no better than the Blazers did against the Apocalypse Machine (aka Spurs).

Aimless, Monday, 16 June 2014 05:38 (ten years ago)

i'm pretty happy for the Spurs. i definitely hated the franchise in years past, but this team is pretty damn good, I gotta say.
totally awesome that Kawhi got MVP, he deserved it. I figured they would just give it to Parker or Duncan for being old

Nhex, Monday, 16 June 2014 06:00 (ten years ago)

couldnt give it to parker after starting g5 0-10. timmy could've taken it tho, he was just consistently great on both ends, especially defensively.

well worth staying up til sunrise to watch this, the last few minutes when pop removed his players one by one so they could all get a standing ovation was great, timmy manu and tp hugging one another was beautiful, their joy when kawhi was selected as finals mvp was fantastic, the whole team seemed so into that, timmy with his kids, so many great images from this game.

yeah even if you're a big fan of LeBron (which I am) I find it difficult to understand how you wouldn't root for the Spurs here (given that you're not from Miami), especially given what happened last year. obviously the Spurs have been all business since day one but you can tell they really really wanted Miami, I loved Tim Duncan's "We'll get it done this time" comment, he never says stuff like that. just watching these guys play the last two Finals have been incredible, shame Miami couldn't have given them a better series but I think we all knew they would run out of steam at some point.

lag∞n, Monday, 16 June 2014 15:05 (ten years ago)

on the subject of the heat's rotation everyone obv basically looked horrible but i think the separation between the spurs supporting players and the heat's supporting players should make it clear how incredible the spurs organization is

the ability to identify and develop youth without high draft picks while still competing for a title every year is probably the toughest thing to do in sports from an organizational standpoint, and that the spurs have been able to do that for a decade is remarkable

the heat's failure to do so during the big 3 era is something they had to reckon with but if it was as easy as the spurs make it look then the spurs wouldn't be the spurs

i think you only need to look as far as the thunder to see how the "adding young players to the rotation" plan can make you seem as helpless vs a team like the spurs as a bunch of old ass dudes gimping around

i assume the big 3 is gonna come back and the heat will have to completely redo the rotation but i think as big a task is tweaking their offensive system to involve bosh more

in the end I think that series was as much about the heat paying ~$30 million to 2 players who just didn't have much impact and it's hard to win when that happens. by definition your team is top heavy and if the guys at the top don't produce then you're really in trouble

bosh is still a near elite offensive player imo but they can't have a system that allows him to float thru games on the perimeter anymore because it puts too much burden on lebron and this playoffs made clear that wade no longer has the ability to run an offense

heat being unable to play as furious D as in years past obvs also huge, that scheme was ingenious as far as compensating for not having traditional big man rim protection but it demands insane amounts of energy and the heat seems have aged out of the ability to expend that

lag∞n, Monday, 16 June 2014 15:14 (ten years ago)

i expect big 3 + melo to happen tbh and i think part of that is riles taking wade into his office mafia style and telling him he's gonna play for $10 mil next year. but melo doesnt address their biggest weaknesses: youth, interior, point guard, cheap contracts

wade prob really needs to take the manu role (and manu $$$) if they want to compete since he can still destroy the pelicans in mid-january and more or less look like a star against eastern playoff fools if he is on the play 2/3rds of a season plan, but the problem is that puts an even heavier minutes/production burden on lebron, who is still mainly indestructible but he just cant get them over a balanced well-prepped team like the spurs all by his lonesome anymore

they def need some kind of athletic wing who could play a solid 15 min a night to help spell him and a big who isn't over 30 and isn't rashard

Look at this joke I've recognised, do you recognise it as well? (forksclovetofu), Monday, 16 June 2014 19:57 (ten years ago)

The Mavs may be the second best coached team in the NBA. Carlisle is very good at finding seams and weaknesses to exploit in the playoffs.

Aimless, Monday, 16 June 2014 20:50 (ten years ago)

the fact that the mavs very nearly beat the spurs should be exhibit A in the "everyone stop freaking out over one series" case. one game goes differently and the heat almost certainly 3 peat, and all this handwringing doesn't happen.

which is not to say the heat weren't a pretty poorly constructed team for the long-term, i had been pointing this out for a while:

i was actually thinking recently about how the clock is gonna strike midnight on the heat at any moment, like the big three all look incredible but their role players are all so bad and/or old

"Boris walks into the gym one day wearing flip-flops and holding his customary cappuccino, which was a staple for him every morning," Griffin recalled. "It was during pre-draft workouts, so he sees the Vertec machine and asks what it is.

"We tell him it measures your vertical leap by determining how many of the bars you can touch. He asks what's the highest anyone has ever gone, and we tell him Amare' Stoudemire cleared the entire rack.

i know!! i've been saying this all year too, as evidenced by the post i quoted from december. i picked the spurs to win in 6, and very nearly took them in 5. but idk, if the heat and spurs play 10 series, the heat win 3 times probably. only one team can win every year. and the heat play in the east, where they're never going to face a problem getting through to the finals. they made the finals 4 years in a row and won twice, that's pretty good

k3vin k., Monday, 16 June 2014 21:56 (ten years ago)

like all i'm saying is that one option for the heat, maybe not the best option but not a totally unreasonable one, is to bring most of the same team back and just hope wade and bosh play better. they played about as badly as they could have

k3vin k., Monday, 16 June 2014 21:58 (ten years ago)

do u think they shd bring wade back if he opts out and demands a max contract

just a reminder that wade played pretty well this year

k3vin k., Monday, 16 June 2014 22:07 (ten years ago)

I mean in what way will wade play better next year? He was actively worse to way worse in literally every facet of his game from last year. he's a negative on defense now. he can't stay on the court. so unless he radically alters his game he's pretty close to done.

Boris Babacar Diaw-Riffiod (Clay), Monday, 16 June 2014 22:07 (ten years ago)

kev, you do remember the sorrowful ballad of poor brandon roy, do you not?

Boris Babacar Diaw-Riffiod (Clay), Monday, 16 June 2014 22:19 (ten years ago)

There’s no meniscus left to operate on in Roy’s left knee. "Nah. None. Not in my right, either," Roy said Friday. The reason Roy’s knee has been swelling up regularly, to the point where it has already been drained twice by Blazers‘ doctor Don Roberts this season, is because there is no cartilage to absorb the pounding associated with running and jumping. "It’s just something I’m going to have to deal with for the rest of my career."

that career lasted something like 6 more games after that statement iirc.

Boris Babacar Diaw-Riffiod (Clay), Monday, 16 June 2014 22:21 (ten years ago)

Manu was injured last finals and played shitty; wade was 'injured' last finals and played shitty too except for maybe a game towards the end

i was getting at this as game 4 was winding down. lebron will still be effective as he pushes towards his mid-30's, but what's wade gonna look like in 2016-17? who is that heat team competing with? it would seem in bron's interest to become the veteran leader of a bright young core than it would to stick with his aging bros.

Aimless, Tuesday, 17 June 2014 00:53 (ten years ago)

They released Mike Miller via the amnesty provision, a move that ultimately saved the Heat $15 million in luxury tax. James complained about this frequently during the season, especially on nights when Wade missed games to deal with ongoing knee issues.

In conjunction, the Heat did not use their mid-level exception to add a role player to help replace Miller. After signing Ray Allen and Shane Battier with the mid-level over the previous two years, the Heat added reclamation projects Michael Beasley and Greg Oden instead of a proven backup.

Third, at midseason the Heat traded Joel Anthony, a future first-round pick and $1 million in a cash-dump deal in which they ended up with Toney Douglas. The Heat could've used those assets in a different type of deal, one that provided immediate help and wasn't aimed at saving tax dollars.

yeah being distracted and a little out of shape seems pretty much the m.o. for french men

Boris Babacar Diaw-Riffiod (Clay), Wednesday, 18 June 2014 04:53 (ten years ago)

its like imagine u grow up in a country where sports are fun and nbd and a chance to spend time with your friends and no one cares about living above the rim and being the man that is france and that is where boris is from

so then he comes to america and everyone is like "you are basically magique jeanson dude ball out" and he just doesnt understand like what is the point, so lonely being the man and scoring by yourself

Anybody come up with a good reason why Wade would opt out of 42 million yet?

tsrobodo, Wednesday, 18 June 2014 10:36 (ten years ago)

he's taken less money in the past iirc

Getting a text from Riles asking if he'd like to go fishing with him, just the two of them out on a boat

, Wednesday, 18 June 2014 12:58 (ten years ago)

MIAMI -- LeBron James said he remains uncertain if he will opt out of the remaining two years on his Miami Heat contract and will take a vacation with his family before contemplating his future.

lag∞n, Wednesday, 18 June 2014 13:02 (ten years ago)

"There is a conversation that will be had between the three of us -- I think that's only right," James said. "We've earned that for each other. I don't know what Dwyane right now is thinking. I don't know what Chris is thinking right now. We'll see what happens."

Wade elected not to speak with reporters after his exit interview, which is the first time he's made that decision in the four seasons he has played with James and Bosh. Wade is coming off the worst performance in five trips to the Finals and was the subject of criticism for his sluggish overall play.

Bosh on Tuesday maintained that he wants to stay in Miami and believes the Heat's core will return intact. But he also anticipated there would have to be serious discussions among the players, team president Pat Riley and owner Micky Arison about the notion that the Big Three might have to opt out of their contracts and accept less money to create cap space to improve the roster.

James said he feels "more at ease" entering the process than he did four years ago when he left Cleveland after seven seasons to sign with the Heat as a free agent. James said he could learn a lesson from the summer of 2010, when he was criticized for announcing his decision during a television special on ESPN.

After winning two titles and advancing to the Finals four times since arriving in Miami, James also said there's really nothing specific the Heat's front office needs to do to make an impression.

"I don't need to hear anything," James said of what he expects from his meeting with Riley. "I understand what this franchise brings to the table. Like I said, I'm not at that point right now. When I get there, I will be ready to talk about it."

James did say he values the flexibility his contract options affords him to be able to evaluate every aspect of his present and future. James could opt out and sign a new deal worth up to $129 million over five seasons. The most another team could offer James, Wade or Bosh is a four-year, $96 million deal.

Should all three players bypass their opt-out clause, they would account for more than $61 million of salary cap that is projected to be about $63 million next season. That means Miami, which could have as many as 14 of its 15 players enter free agency next month, would have limited resources to upgrade the roster in some regards.

"I'm in position to be able to do that," James said of having flexibility. "Not saying I want to take that option right now. I'm not sure yet. There's a lot of time when you're not in control of your future in professional sports. I've been fortunate to have two opportunities to do that -- in 2010, and if I decide to use it now, I can be in control of my future now."

there were these cool photos from a recent season that were super high contrast done w a flash like someone dunking and u see the players but the background is totally black but i cant find them

lag∞n, Wednesday, 18 June 2014 19:23 (ten years ago)

I'm really curious how they got that effect. The court floors are completely lit up all over during the game, so like kevin mentioned, how could you produce a giant flash strong enough to make those shadows and not completely disrupt the arena?
