annoyed that even if the Patriots win, there will still be a cloud over them because of #deflationgate

Free Me's Electric Trumpet (Moodles), Monday, 19 January 2015 15:26 (ten years ago)

nah fuck that

call all destroyer, Monday, 19 January 2015 15:28 (ten years ago)

i'm not exactly pro-patriots but think the deflation controversy is kind of ridiculous, they would've obliterated the colts regardless of how light or heavy the ball was

i'm tellin you it was kenard (slothroprhymes), Monday, 19 January 2015 15:38 (ten years ago)

I agree, but don't know that football fans overall do as well. Of course, I also think their previous SB wins were completely legit too, so...

Free Me's Electric Trumpet (Moodles), Monday, 19 January 2015 15:52 (ten years ago)

someone is going to have to explain to me how the patriots were able to deflate balls that are under the control of the refs starting 2+ hours before the game (when they get weighed) and in a way that only benefited the patriots and not the colts.

call all destroyer, Monday, 19 January 2015 16:02 (ten years ago)

cause... cause... spygate

lag∞n, Monday, 19 January 2015 16:06 (ten years ago)

anyway feel like the patriots shd be a lil favored in this one mostly based on seattles genuinely horrific recent play

lag∞n, Monday, 19 January 2015 16:07 (ten years ago)

not to mention their mediocre play most of the season, maybe thats just who they are?

lag∞n, Monday, 19 January 2015 16:09 (ten years ago)

The Baltimore Ravens hired former Chicago Bears coach Marc Trestman to be their offensive coordinator.

Trestman, 59, joins the Ravens after going 13-19 in two seasons with the Bears. He replaces Gary Kubiak, who was announced as the Denver Broncos' new coach Tuesday.

This is the Ravens' fourth new offensive coordinator in as many seasons.

Trestman interviewed for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers' offensive coordinator position earlier this offseason. He has been an offensive coordinator for four NFL teams -- the Cleveland Browns, San Francisco 49ers, Arizona Cardinals and Oakland Raiders.

Though it didn't work out with Jay Cutler this season, Trestman helped the Bears become the NFL's second-highest scoring team in 2013 with Cutler and Josh McCown at quarterback.

LIKE If you are against racism (omar little), Tuesday, 20 January 2015 22:17 (ten years ago)

2013 Bears were indeed fun to watch, but fuck Joe Flacco and fuck the Ravens. I don't care if this works out like the 2013 Bears. I will still hate them with lazer heat eyes.

does anyone know what the advantage of deflating footballs is supposed to be?

Wu-Tang Clannad (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Tuesday, 20 January 2015 22:48 (ten years ago)

supposedly easier to throw, makes it easier to grip

johnny crunch, Tuesday, 20 January 2015 22:58 (ten years ago)

reports said they were "weighing" the balls- is that what they meant? because it doesn't seem like the additional volume of air would be outside the margin of error for production footballs.

men without hat tips (Hunt3r), Tuesday, 20 January 2015 23:44 (ten years ago)

nothing about this whole story makes any sense

lag∞n, Tuesday, 20 January 2015 23:45 (ten years ago)

i guess i mean additional mass of air, though the volume of the ball should increase slightly.

men without hat tips (Hunt3r), Tuesday, 20 January 2015 23:47 (ten years ago)

dont the refs test then possess the balls from before game time, were the ball boys doing it whats the story idgi

lag∞n, Tuesday, 20 January 2015 23:48 (ten years ago)

there was a tom brady double on the sidelines going over game plans while the real tom brady deflated balls in the locker room

Part of the investigation that needs further vetting is how the 11 footballs became underinflated.

The game balls that each team received for preparation were required to be inspected and approved by referee Walt Anderson two hours and 15 minutes before kickoff, then returned to a ball attendant.

lag∞n, Wednesday, 21 January 2015 14:38 (ten years ago)

Under NFL rules, each team provides balls each game for use when its offense is on the field. The balls are inspected before the game by the officiating crew, then handled during the game by home-team personnel.

lag∞n, Wednesday, 21 January 2015 14:39 (ten years ago)

proposal: 1 (one) football per game. if something happens to that ball, there is a giant hamper full of like soccer balls, beach balls, nerf, etc and the offense can grab whichever they want

Roberto Spiralli, Wednesday, 21 January 2015 15:24 (ten years ago)

maybe not a better system but equivalent

Roberto Spiralli, Wednesday, 21 January 2015 15:26 (ten years ago)

before every snap, the qb should have to replace a golden idol with the football. if the football is underweight, they play the down under threat of death by giant boulder. also, all of the football will necessarily be played with a golden idol instead of a football in this scenario.

lag∞n, Wednesday, 21 January 2015 16:44 (ten years ago)

Abstinence Hawk (frogbs), Wednesday, 21 January 2015 16:46 (ten years ago)

yes, a golden idol of a cat or squirrel god should be fine

whichever rodent god idol is the team's mascot maybe?

$80 is absurd and very ridiculous! (Sufjan Grafton), Wednesday, 21 January 2015 16:49 (ten years ago)

perhaps the game should be changed to a 1-on-1 scenario where a representative priest or nickel cornerback of each team places a deflated ball in front of a golden idol of his team's rodent god. The team whose rodent god first inflates a ball to regulation weight wins the football game.

am0n, Wednesday, 21 January 2015 16:55 (ten years ago)

After catching an interception in the second quarter, Colts linebacker D'Qwell Jackson noticed the ball was less inflated than usual. On the sidelines, he passed it over to an equipment manager, and it eventually made its way to the team's general manager, then the NFL's director of football operations. He told the game officials at halftime, but the balls were apparently never swapped out.

smh snitch

lag∞n, Wednesday, 21 January 2015 16:59 (ten years ago)

An even bigger mystery is how the officials — who handle the balls before every single play — didn't notice they were under-inflated, when one touch by Jackson caught his attention.

This article has the right idea. It made me chuckle.

earlnash, Thursday, 22 January 2015 02:48 (ten years ago)

Belichick stopped short of admitting to cheating his way to a 45-7 win over the Colts, but said the fired ball boy failed to do things “the Patriots’ way.”

“With the Pats, we don’t go halfway, or in this case 92 percent of the way,” said Belichick. “We wish our ball boy the best.”

Added Belichick: “I understand he’s only got two years of high school left, I assume he’ll be fine in the end.”

If the Pats were in family therapy (and I’m happy to refer them!), they’d learn a concept known as the Trust Bank. A child builds trust by making “deposits” in the Trust Bank by, say, walking the dog when it’s her turn, finishing her homework, etc.

mookieproof, Thursday, 22 January 2015 18:21 (ten years ago)

i see this game playing out pretty much like last year's super bowl, maybe not as sever of a blowout but i expect seattle to thrash through the pats

a team with a high powered offense that only runs the ball to keep defenses honest can easily be destroyed by a team that has a super physical defense that can play man defense and get to the QB with only four rushers

J0rdan S., Thursday, 22 January 2015 18:26 (ten years ago)

not sure you can say NE only runs the ball to keep defenses honest when they have just successfully used a rush-heavy gameplan in the championship game. and the biggest question for the game is whether seattle can actually get to the QB with 4 men, they are one of the league's more blitz happy teams.

however

i don't think the pats will plan to run the ball 40 times and i think seattle prob can get a lot of 4 man pressure on ol' softballs. patriots have to score 24+ to win this i think and i am not sure they will be able to. it will be close though, nothing like last year's game. if a team gets destroyed in this game it'd have to be the seattle team that played the first 55 minutes last week.

Roberto Spiralli, Thursday, 22 January 2015 20:25 (ten years ago)

The 2014 Patriots were just the 3rd team in the last 25 years to never have lost a fumble at home! The biggest difference between the Patriots and the other 2 teams who did it was that New England ran between 150 and 200 MORE plays this year than those teams did in the years they had zero home fumbles, making the Patriots stand alone in this unique statistic.

I think the Pats success really comes down to how well they will be able to run the ball. Seattle has such a fantastic defensive backfield, they can keep linebackers up tight to cut off clubs running and screen game. You got to think Chancellor is going to be shadowing Gronk and Kam is just as freakishly impressive an athlete. Seahawks are also like B-more and Pittsburgh where they are good at hiding who is the blitzer. Seattle's defense is built on superior speed and stealth planning.

Don't like either club, but I think football match up wise, it's pretty damn interesting.

I just think it's hilarious that the Patriots went from being seen as some incorruptible, pure dynasty and then pretty much since 2007, have been frequently embroiled in controversies every other year.

I mean it's a hilarious scandal and I'm glad for the entertainment (this really is Goodell's NFL), but this brand of cheating is no diff than Yogi Berra nicking baseballs with his shinguards. Deflated footballs didn't help tackles pick up blocks, help Brady read coverage, or force the Colts to miss tackles. The Patriots could have won if the ball was a rolled up newspaper. Fine em and let's move on.

But not before three more hilarious press conferences, please.

it seems like according to belichick, the explanation is that the pats scuff up the footballs a lot more than other teams do, and this process affects the pressure. this is why he is talking in press conferences about the process and how messed up the footballs are that they use in practice and in games

lots of sportswriters do not understand this even after belichick explained it - why didn't the footballs used by indianapolis come in at a lower pressure? uh.. because they are not going through the same process to prepare them? that's what he said isn't it?

i used to think i wanted a career in journalism. in the past few years it has really dawned on me that if you happen to know a whole lot in detail about a particular subject, and then follow the work of media covering that subject, there are a handful of reporters who are really insightful, others who are not breaking a lot of stories but are at least reliable and honest, and then an absolute ton of analysts/writers/aggregators all over the web who get things wrong all the time in a really casual offhand way that never gets corrected by anyone

this is like, a lot of people don't realize HOW MUCH THOUGHT and analysis goes into shit in professional athletics. the players may or may not be geeks, but they have plenty of guys surrounding them who are, and almost nothing is left to chance. this need not necessarily implicate brady (beyond, imo, him recognizing that at game time the balls are softer then 12.5psi, which i believe any competent pro qb could assess).

"Precision is critical for any scientific experiment. For example, the official kickoff temperature in Foxboro on Sunday was 51 degrees, not 50. To fully simulate the conditions, the test should have occurred at 51 degrees. Also, room temperature typically is 72 degrees, not 75. That results in a four-degree variance, which surely had an impact on the ultimate findings, since pressure and temperature are directly related."

at this late date as a below-casual nfl fan it's amazing to me that each team is responsible for its own ball on offense. that that isn't something absolutely under the control of the officials is kinda nuts. like, the solution to this insanity seems p obvious?

goole, Monday, 26 January 2015 17:31 (ten years ago)

yeah its very weird

lag∞n, Monday, 26 January 2015 17:48 (ten years ago)

my initial understanding was that the teams provide the footballs and the officials check them and give them back. but it sounds like once they are handed over to the officials the officials keep hold of them through the game? which being the case, there is really no opportunity for tampering after the balls are checked, which is where this 'hot room' thing came from i.e. the calls are prepared in a heated room or are otherwise artificially heated to temporarily elevate the pressure before giving them to the officials to measure. so, even putting aside the inherent craziness of having each team provide its own footballs, if something is actually amiss here, the nfl being incompetent in not being able to enforce its own rules is way more significant than any team trying to take advantage of that incompetence (phil simms' aaron rodgers story about overinflating balls because the officials might not even adjust them correctly being a direct example of this in action).

Roberto Spiralli, Monday, 26 January 2015 18:02 (ten years ago)

my takeaway from all of this is that the NFL is best enjoyed as a clown show

"Go pet your dog" is the name of my dog (DJP), Monday, 26 January 2015 18:04 (ten years ago)

i know this doesn't even need saying but the existence of this story as one team's misdeed vs league/officiating incompetence depends exclusively on the existence of ill will for the team in question, which happily for the news makers abounds. i am not sure what about the patriots makes them more entertaining to bash than the nfl itself. i guess it is because brady and belichick are just more interesting characters than goodell. maybe the nfl just did a good job of giving the story a push in the right direction at a critical time, with the benefit of advance knowledge of course. although as i reflect on it i don't believe we know where the indianapolis reporter's source was, with the colts or in the nfl, the former i assume. hasn't been enough attention on the genesis of this story at all really.

Roberto Spiralli, Monday, 26 January 2015 18:15 (ten years ago)

lag∞n, Monday, 26 January 2015 18:16 (ten years ago)

haha, that is true. ppl do still love to hate the league tho, but maybe that isn't pervasive elsewhere as it is here atop the hifalutin intellectual tower of the east coast

the whole situation can of course be redeemed by it blowing up in the nfl's face dramatically and hopefully repeatedly. feels like the only positive outcome.

what actual information do we have about doctored footballs that you can have any confidence in? there is no rigour to any of it so far, hopefully more information is released with the interview that proves otherwise but i'm not going to hold my breath. it takes a lot of will to conclude the patriots definitely did anything, which is fine but pretty hilarious coming in the context of an accusation of bias

true, but since i've already made myself look a fool-

unless the nfl was completely incompetent and tested the balls at differing temperatures

this is basically the case that Belichick was making the other day

no, he said:

We found that once the footballs were on the field over an extended period of time, in other words, they were adjusted to the climatic conditions and also the fact that the footballs reached an equilibrium without the rubbing process, that after that had run its course and the footballs had reached an equilibrium, that they were down approximately one-and-a-half pounds per square inch. When we brought the footballs back in after that process and re-tested them in a controlled environment as we have here, then those measurements rose approximately one half pound per square inch. So the net of one and a half, back to a half, is approximately one pound per square inch, to one and a half.

so doing this process + calibration + exposure to cold + rewarming + calibration = a one psi loss. what? that's ridiculous.

and

No, the situation is the preparation of the football caused the football to, I would say, be artificially high in PSI when it was set to the regulation, regulated level. And then it reached its equilibrium at some point later on, an hour, two hours into the game into the pregame, whatever it was — and that level was below what was set in this climatic condition. I think that’s exactly what happened.

he's telling you the "rubbing process" caused the football to be "artificially high." it's not an explanation- it's an admission. if a merchant accused of thumbing the scales told you that his preparation of your bag of tomatoes caused it to weigh "artificially high" at the the time of weighing, what would you say?

and the thing is, i still don't believe that explanation, that rubbing them caused them to have an artificially elevated pressure reading. if the balls were in fact low, it would have been much easier just to let air out of the ball.

so yeah, i'm just biased.

men without hat tips (Hunt3r), Tuesday, 27 January 2015 06:31 (ten years ago)

no one has provided enough detail about the state of the various balls to perfectly assess any of these claims but to call pressure loss without tampering ridiculous is, well, ridiculous.

http://www.thedailybeast.com/articles/2015/01/24/basic-physics-may-defeat-deflategate.html

On a blackboard, the Ideal Gas Law is written thus:

PV=nRT

The P stands for pressure, the V for volume. The n is the amount of gas, the R a mathematical constant. The T is temperature.

Among other things, the equation establishes that if the volume is a constant such as the inside of a football, then the pressure will vary in accordance with the temperature.

Let’s say the internal pressure of a football is measured indoors, as the footballs were two hours before the AFC Championship game last weekend.

And let’s assume that the temperature inside was in the mid-70s Fahrenheit.

Now we know that the temperature on the field was around 50 degrees when the balls were brought out for the start of the game.

We also know that the temperature soon after dropped into the mid-40s.

And, as calculated by a prominent Boston physicist at the request of the Daily Beast, a 30-degree decrease in temperature would result in a corresponding pressure drop of 1.54 PSI (pounds per square inch.)

In 2006, Tom Brady (and Peyton Manning) lobbied in favor of changing an NFL rule that mandated home teams provided game balls for both teams. Brady wanted the NFL to let every team provide its own footballs to use on offense, even when that team was playing on the road. After Brady and Manning’s efforts, the NFL agreed to change the rule. Prior to that change, there would be relatively little advantage to playing with deflated footballs because both teams would be using the same balls.

“The thing is, every quarterback likes it a little bit different,” Brady said at the time he was pushing for the change. “Some like them blown up a little bit more, some like them a little more thin, some like them a little more new, some like them really broken in.”

patriots fumble rate plummeting right after rule change allowing them control of game balls p sus tbqh

lag∞n, Tuesday, 27 January 2015 15:09 (ten years ago)

they had control of game balls 50% of the time before any change. was there a significant disparity between home/road fumble rates before that? or did someone just spend a day trawling thru various stats until something that could be explained 100 other ways appeared to correlate?

to be clear, i am not saying i believe the patriots didn't doing anything, but there are 2 major assumptions to any of this, 1) that there is something to explain and 2) that illegal tampering is the explanation, and even the first one is still hugely speculative. and if we are able to actually establish 1), from what details we have about the process here, hanlon's razor points squarely at the nfl until there is anything of actual substance implicating the patriots.

Hammer Smashed Bagels, Tuesday, 27 January 2015 23:36 (ten years ago)

he's telling you the "rubbing process" caused the football to be "artificially high." it's not an explanation- it's an admission.

an admission except i don't see how it is breaking any of the current rules. maybe the league wants to change its rules to say the footballs need x number of hours to settle before the refs check them and also make sure the refs check them properly. but anyway, if this process involves taking some kind of industrial power tool to scrub the surface of the football.. which is what some other teams do.. that's the effect that no one in the media has really even asked about. it's not the room temperature vs the field temperature, it's the temperature/pressure/whatever generated by the process of breaking in the football the day of the game. which would obviously be different for the footballs used by the colts because they don't have the same process

and if the referees didn't really check the pressure that carefully that's on them

it doesn't make sense to me that the footballs were tampered with. like sneaking them into another room and deflating them or whatever. it doesn't make sense that a lhigh profile organization under a lot of media scrutiny would have, as a regular part of their process before the biggest event of the year at their stadium on national television, some random dude at the bottom of the chain charged with sneaking off with the game balls and doing something to alter them. it seems like if that were the case any investigator would have found it out within like a day

seriously, THIS GUY (daria-g), Tuesday, 27 January 2015 23:49 (ten years ago)

seems like for "the rubbing process" to account for the inflation issues youd have to either rub them right before the inspection or store than so that they retain the heat which id think wld otherwise dissipate pretty quickly, taking the would scenario from a byproduct of their process to the point of the whole scheme

wild speculation i know just a bit of fun folks, i like this theory tho provides plausible deniability

wodner if the refs were ever all yikes those are some hot balls u got there fellas

lag∞n, Wednesday, 28 January 2015 00:04 (ten years ago)

yeah it seems like it's a fine line between 'accidental byproduct of the process' vs intentionally being a little shady. belichick did say the 'process' continues right up until they're handed over to the officials. but like, if the refs continually okay them and/or don't even check all that carefully and never have any issue.. well.. i think that if during the afc title game someone decided there was going to be an issue, there were better ways for the league to handle it

I guess it's harder to tell with a football because mostly you just hold it like a baby

Also I'm very curious about that ball boy, sticking a pin into 12 footballs for a few seconds each seems totally doable in 90 seconds or however long they have him on video for

indie fuxxor albums i have secretly spotified (slothroprhymes), Wednesday, 28 January 2015 20:54 (ten years ago)

I was also thinking they could probably just take an ex linebacker and tape all the footballs to him and then get him to wear a super baggy shirt and sweats and then he could enter the bathroom and nobody would suspect a thing

, Wednesday, 28 January 2015 20:54 (ten years ago)

the pats fill the balls with hot air immediately before they are checked. then the pressure is lower when the air inside comes to equilibrium at game time temperature.

I actually began my journalism career at a young age. When I was 9, I had a letter published in John Justin Smith’s column in the Chicago Daily News, making fun of the Cubs. While I’m not sure if my writing has improved much since then, this White Sox fan still enjoys taking shots at the Cubs.

The letter put me on a clear career path. After graduating the University of Illinois, I began a 27-year career with the Chicago Tribune in 1981. I covered the Chicago Bears during their famous Super Bowl season in 1985 and spent three years as the beat writer for the White Sox. The teams were bad, but I got to write about Hall of Famers Carlton Fisk, Tom Seaver, Steve Carlton (he actually talked once!) and Tony La Russa.

Later I got to cover a fellow named Tiger Woods as the Tribune’s golf writer. I took over the sports media column in 1997, and it quickly became one of my favorite beats. I got to ride in John Madden’s bus; spend a night watching basketball with Charles Barkley and Magic Johnson at TNT; and share lunch with David Halberstam, one of my journalism heroes.

After leaving the Tribune in 2008, I did a sports business blog for Crain’s Chicago Business. I continue to write about golf for several outlets and co-host a Saturday morning golf talk show on WSCR-AM 670.

I am the co-author of two books. Dan McNeil, a local sports radio personality, and I wrote The Great Book of Chicago Sports Lists (Running Press, 2008). I then teamed with long-time Washington Post reporter Leonard Shapiro on Golf Lists Mania (Running Press, 2011). Jim Nantz provided the foreword for the book, which included contributions from Jack Nicklaus and Arnold Palmer.

In the honors department, I was cited twice in the prestigious Associated Press Sports Editors contest with top 4 finishes for best news story. I was a three-time first-place winner in the Golf Writers of America Association contest in the enterprise category. In 1994, the Center for the Study of Sport in Society at Northeastern University presented him with the Excellence in Sports Journalism Award.

I live in the North suburbs of Chicago with my wife, Ilene, an accomplished lawyer and my sons, Matt and Sam, who inherited their father’s addiction for all things sports.

My favorite sporting moments? That’s easy: The White Sox winning the 2005 World Series and making birdies on 12 and 14 at Augusta National. Not bad for a 15-handicapper.

Seahawks' Lynch makes a mockery of Media Day

His teammates' defense of him is understandable; to them, Lynch is loyal in the locker room and ferocious on the field, fully worthy of his "Beast Mode" nickname.

Also, consider their general profile: These largely are very young men whose talent has afforded them shelter and structure most of their lives. They are people for whom "hard work" equates to lifting weights and running sprints; for whom "commitment" means adhering to a loose daily schedule that tells them when to wake, when to eat, when to think; for whom "adversity" means being .500 midway through a season and somehow making the playoffs.

They know little of the real world and its gravity.

http://www.slate.com/articles/news_and_politics/politics/2015/01/jeb_bush_and_bill_belichick_at_andover_the_presidential_candidate_and_patriots.html

There to witness this transformation, along with Jeb, were his fellow members of the Class of ’71, a group that also included Lincoln Chafee, who would eventually assume his father’s seat in the U.S. Senate, and Tom Foley, who would to go on to become a successful venture capitalist and George W. Bush’s ambassador to Ireland before twice losing bids to become Connecticut’s governor, in 2010 and 2014. (Just one and two years behind them, respectively, were authors Buzz Bissinger and Michael Beschloss.) And at the start of their senior year, they were joined by Belichick, who had come north for a postgraduate year after attending high school in Annapolis, where his father was working as a talent scout for the Naval Academy’s football team, to improve his odds of getting into a premier college.

yeah I mean every sportswriter on the planet is gonna be talking about this but it's really interesting to see how legacies and dynasies can be flipped in literally an instant. figured Russ was fighting an uphill battle trying to score a TD w/ 2 minutes but he then gets two 30 yard plays, one of which was absolutely ridiculous, and you can really see the life coming out of the Pats, given how everyone and their mother knows that Lynch is gonna score there like 95% of the time. only, that happened.

Abstinence Hawk (frogbs), Monday, 2 February 2015 17:01 (ten years ago)

yeah, it wasn't clear if the Pats let the clock run down after the first attempt by Lynch because they were so stunned or if they were really playing devious mind games to force a passing play. Naturally, I prefer the latter interpretation.

Free Me's Electric Trumpet (Moodles), Monday, 2 February 2015 17:03 (ten years ago)

It's strange to me too. But we're talking about praxis, man. (Sufjan Grafton), Monday, 2 February 2015 17:12 (ten years ago)

Right, there were tons of people saying "just run with Lynch 4 times there" but on 2nd down no way would they have gotten three running plays off, there were 23 seconds (?) and only 1 TO. So they would have to throw once, either on 2nd or 3rd, and I guess if it's on 3rd everone knows its coming. I'm guessing this is what Carroll is saying in his pressers. I'd like to think BB was considering this very thing but I feel it was most likely just shock. My issue was that running the slant through the middle there is literally the riskiest thing you can do.

Rewatching this, it took a really, really great play by Butler to even make it possible, and to Seattle's defense he really does look wide open in that moment.

Abstinence Hawk (frogbs), Monday, 2 February 2015 17:14 (ten years ago)

there were only 23 seconds cause they took the entire play clock to run a play btw

mookieproof, Monday, 2 February 2015 17:44 (ten years ago)

maybe the Hawks were expecting the Pats to take a timeout there and when they didn't, it caused Carroll to make some shaky in-the-moment decisions? certainly they could've run all 4 downs had they not burned clock...

I thought the pass made perfect sense, and the pass was on target.

Butler made a great play. If he hadn't the Seahawks woulda won the game.

We always crack at the offensive coordinator who runs it up the gut four times in a row at the goal line and gets stuffed. This time Bevell switched to pass that was designed to run very little clock. If you're going to call a pass play there, it's either that sort of slant or a quick hook to an edge.

Also Bevell is wrong that Lockette didn't fight hard enough or whatever. He does a little deke and then runs the slant correctly. Lockette's eyes are on the ball so he doesn't see how close Butler is to circling around Kearse's pick.

polyphonic, Monday, 2 February 2015 18:43 (ten years ago)

it is funny how the bigger guy lockette just bounces off butler but yeah it is because butler knows what's coming and he doesn't. that was such a lame thing for the oc to come out with, i hope that stays with him

Roberto Spiralli, Monday, 2 February 2015 18:47 (ten years ago)

When a play decides a game someone on the losing team must be punished. It is the inescapable law of scapegoating and it must be enforced.

Aimless, Monday, 2 February 2015 18:49 (ten years ago)

We always crack at the offensive coordinator who runs it up the gut four times in a row at the goal line and gets stuffed.

not if that OC has Marshawn Lynch and is playing against a defense that's not good at short-yardage defense

i mean, it took a great play from Butler, the play *should've* worked, but if you're gonna run a pass, you would think youd really want one with a lower chance of disaster

Abstinence Hawk (frogbs), Monday, 2 February 2015 18:55 (ten years ago)

I mean http://deadspin.com/heres-how-9-11-truther-pete-carroll-would-have-prevente-1649321129

"OK, let me give you an illustration," Carroll says. "Let's say, after all the stuff that we heard about what was going on in Iraq, we sent 10,000 people to Iraq as peacefully as we could go. And we walked wherever they would let us go, and we just talked to people and listened to what their issues were. And then we tried to figure out the best way we could support them and change things, as opposed to bombing (expletive) thousands of people with shock and awe. It might've taken us longer to influence change, but nobody would've died. And the power that we could've generated by just being willing to listen and see if there was a way we could answer their call and help them, whatever they wanted.

"Not tell them what to do. Not change them. Just help them go where they wanted to go. What if we had done that? How much money would that have cost us? Give me a thousand peace workers that would go over and do that. Just listen and talk. Think of what we could've done, as opposed to killing hundreds of thousands of people or whatever we did. And leave the wrath of what we did."

Carroll is trembling with intensity. His eye contact is so powerful that you can't look away from him.

indy also jacked up the temperature in the rca dome in the second half of the 2006 afc championship game, god what a hateful team.

the call was bad bc you have to know the Pats will cheat there

It's strange to me too. But we're talking about praxis, man. (Sufjan Grafton), Wednesday, 4 February 2015 23:12 (ten years ago)

butler's vision = a secret contact lens that showed him the play before the snap

Wilson was trying to spike the ball but he hit the wrong button on the controller

Hammer Smashed Bagels, Wednesday, 4 February 2015 23:19 (ten years ago)

the fake-spike-throw-deep play would have been good in that situation

#brands

mookieproof, Thursday, 5 February 2015 20:06 (ten years ago)

the bible and style standards notes are just cheap shots; every logo in existence, Red Cross and MSF inclusive, has those restrictions
being unable to point to a dollar figure or concrete goal is thoroughly damning though. should've donated the money to an extant NPO and cobranded but that's the nfl for you

the plight of y0landa (forksclovetofu), Thursday, 5 February 2015 20:18 (ten years ago)

I think this past season of the NFL is pretty much total confirmation that the sport has moved into it's pro wrestling stage. It's got to be now the biggest and dumbest sport on the planet, which is probably why it so successful. I grew up with profootball but I think the whole thing is kinda become un-watchable in a way as it just ugly. You can get lost in the athletic prowess of the sport, but everything else has gotten obnoxious to the max from the Commissioners and owners on down.

I always thought pro wrestling was best when it embraced its own ridiculousness, something the NFL probably will never do
