or is general consensus that Sam isn't NFL calibre / NFL still isn't ready for a gay player
actually think in a weird way that it might help his chances, as part of his pre-draft combine analysis was that he was too stiff and lacked fluidity
but yeah he's probably never going to get a real chance
― polyphonic, Tuesday, 24 February 2015 16:40 (ten years ago)
if there was anything there at all marinelli would've hung on to him at dallas. he was a late draft pick probably shouldn't have been drafted, i don't think there is any reason to look for other reasons if he doesn't make it. it is possible that a team might've been put off from even bringing him in to take a look but really after being cut by stl there's nowhere better he could've hoped to have hit a practice squad than the cowboys.
― Roberto Spiralli, Tuesday, 24 February 2015 16:44 (ten years ago)
I don't think any owner or coach at this stage is afraid to take on a gay player, because the NFL is all about $$$ and buzz. Sam just isn't ready yet (and his window will probably close by the end of the 2015 season).

To be honest with you, I would be lying if I didn't tell you that I was expecting the ball. Yes, I was expecting the ball. But in life, these things happen. Like I told a reporter after the game, it's a team sport."I had no problem with the decision of the playcalling. I mean, you know ... I think it was more of a ... how do I say this? When you look at me, and you let me run that ball in ... I am the face of the nation. You know, MVP of the Super Bowl ... that's pretty much the face of the nation at that point of time. I don't know what went into that call. I mean, maybe it was a good thing that I didn't get the ball. I mean, you know, it cost us the Super Bowl. I mean, I have full ... I have full confidence in my teammates to execute that plan because we've done it so many more times. But would I love to had the ball in? Yes, I would have."But the game is over, and I am in Turkey."

I think Suh has a bit more pride than Haynesworth, he wants to be great. Suh is many things, but I don't recall him ever being called a dead fish or a guy that takes lots of plays off.
― earlnash, Tuesday, 3 March 2015 04:33 (ten years ago)
It would be a ballsier and way more expensive move for Mike Brown ever to attempt, but I would think if you put Suh on the Bengals line with what they already got, that defense would be flat out scary.
― earlnash, Tuesday, 3 March 2015 04:38 (ten years ago)
Really just about ANY club could use Suh, it's just who is going to pony up the cash. i think the only question is does Suh fit into a 3-4 as well as a 4-3. That I don't know but I would like to hear from a defensive coach to say.
― earlnash, Tuesday, 3 March 2015 04:41 (ten years ago)

― call all destroyer, Tuesday, 3 March 2015 04:50 (ten years ago)

i can't think of a scenario in which they have interest in suh
― call all destroyer, Tuesday, 3 March 2015 05:02 (ten years ago)
It's hard to say, it seems like some speed rushers do really well going from a 4-3 to a 3-4. I doubt that Suh has rarely dropped back into coverage in Detroit and a 3-4 end definitely drops back to cover people at some point.
My guess is that Suh is such a physical beast, it probably doesn't really matter where you put him on the line as you got to get two guys on him.

I'd say chip is the kind of a coach who needs to be given a pretty free hand. He may fail or he may succeed, but if it isn't on his own terms he will almost certainly fail, so you may as well hand him the reins and see where he takes you. It may take him a couple of tries in the nfl to get the hang of it, but his whole value is his willingness to experiment.

I'm almost betting the reason to move McCoy is to open up some budget for another deal. The Eagles needed a LB and they got one on a rookie contract that might be decent.
RB just doesn't seem to be that respected a position now in the NFL. You have a good line and a guy that can carry the ball, go forward without fumbling and you can get a running game. Denver has gone through a bunch of different 1000 yard rushers. B-more switched gears with a backup and seemed to improve last year.

Randall Cobb staying put in Green Bay. I think Cobb being able to play for a winner on TV all the time could end up being lucrative in other ways off the field that could make up for the salary he could have gotten in Oakland or Jacksonville.
I got to figure Reggie Wayne will try to play somewhere this year, but it will be weird for him no longer to be a Colt. Got to say though, he didn't seem like the same player last year, the age seemed to catch up to him last year coming off the injury. How Wayne went into his last camp with the Colts last year was pretty classic.

The idea that an NFL head coach in 2015 would be making personnel moves based on race is just crazy. It's the Eagles doing a salary dump to re-allocate the cash in other positions. Those two players were going to cost $20 million combined. My guess is they are going to get 4 good $5 million dollar a year players on the o-line and defense then try to draft someone fast in the middle rounds for the offense on a rookie contract. They will probably pick up a vet wideout for depth who has a low contract.
― earlnash, Tuesday, 10 March 2015 03:25 (ten years ago)
It does seem that the Eagles signing Sanchez and making this moves makes at least seem feasible they might be working to make a deal and get Mariotta. I'll believe it can happen when it happens.
― earlnash, Tuesday, 10 March 2015 03:29 (ten years ago)
I think the Bears dumping Marshall on the Jets was a similar type of salary dump. You got one good WR in Jeffrys, roll the dice and turn Marshall's salary into a DB and a LB. The defense is the thing that is most in shambles in Chicago.
― earlnash, Tuesday, 10 March 2015 03:31 (ten years ago)
You want an example of this kind of move, look at the Colts the past couple of years. That team was totally spent in that year Manning was out. They pretty much used mid-level free agents and rebuilt their defense in an off season by just doing that exact thing.
― earlnash, Tuesday, 10 March 2015 03:33 (ten years ago)
If the Iggles get Mariota somehow, tell the offensive line to protect him like the family jewels, because if they do he will take you to places you want to go.
― Aimless, Tuesday, 10 March 2015 03:37 (ten years ago)
mariota would have protection if he somehow ends up at the eagles, just maybe not targets. i don't see it tho, they clearly want to use their resources on defense and use mostly spare parts on offense after the line and lean on the system. brandon graham another good FA pick up on D. chip is going to be so pissed when he finds out all these big new signings are black dudes.
― Roberto Spiralli, Tuesday, 10 March 2015 11:57 (ten years ago)

well the seahawks have been trying to obtain a really skilled pass catcher for years now so they clearly think they need someone, and jimmy graham when healthy..... has been basically unstoppable (certainly as far as tight ends go)

― slothroprhymes, Tuesday, 10 March 2015 20:17 (ten years ago)
i will grant you that the seahawks think they need a receiver and they prob know their business p well but they have just got to consecutive super bowls without one and their offense is built around rushing for 120+ yards and protecting wilson while he runs around until coverage opens up, which has been a pretty good strategy to date. they were worst when they had harvin on the team.
and graham was unstoppable when he was covered by linebackers. defenses figured that one out already. he is still good but not the best use of a 1st round pick for them in particular

― Mordy, Tuesday, 10 March 2015 23:01 (ten years ago)
there's literally no eagles upside to this deal it seems?
That seems like a heck of a haul for the Rams, they got some real talent on the defense and if they can use the draft pick with a free agent to fix their offensive line, they could be good. Bradford at this point is a complete and total mystery missing a year and a half to me. I know he was playing pretty decent when he got hurt, but that was 2013, it's been a while. The second round pick in 2016 is the big thing, that's a potential good draft pick for any club. I got to think with that guarantee and the fact they traded two picks, I can't see the Eagles trading for Mariotta.
Not that Revis or Marshall are bad players, but they are expensive. That will be 20+ million dollars in a couple guys. I'd think they could be better served by getting a few 1 short smaller contract free free agents vets.
― earlnash, Tuesday, 10 March 2015 23:10 (ten years ago)
i guess the upside is that bradford is actually good
― J0rdan S., Tuesday, 10 March 2015 23:13 (ten years ago)

All I'm saying is that this guy at one time was considered one of the worst first round QB busts ever. It can happen.

I wonder how a club really evaluates a player like Bradford for a trade. Do they get a work out with him? I'd think for a player that has missed a season and half, the trading club would want to somehow get to see him throw some place before making deal.

― polyphonic, Wednesday, 11 March 2015 18:18 (ten years ago)
i was thinking mathews/sproles is a nice pairing. if they have got him for reasonable money i like the move a lot. meanwhile someone is going to pay murray a ton of cash and he is going to go back to being injured all the time immediately upon signing, so there is that.
― Roberto Spiralli, Wednesday, 11 March 2015 18:24 (ten years ago)
also, i don;t have the exact stat to hand but i believe murray rushed one million times last season. one way or another, whoever does pay for him is going to be sad by the end of it.

If they use Mathews/Sproles do you use Polk in goal line sets? Mathews has not performed well at the goal, historically.

i have barely seen polk so can't say, but i feel like chip if anyone can scheme things at the goal line to make up for any deficiencies in straight ahead short yardage running.
― Roberto Spiralli, Wednesday, 11 March 2015 18:33 (ten years ago)
kelly press conference sounds it was a treat. a team offered him a 1st round pick for bradford already? has no interest in trading up, bradford is the guy, stl offense staff has been terrible, trust me i got this
― Roberto Spiralli, Wednesday, 11 March 2015 18:45 (ten years ago)
i'm talking myself into bradford on the eagles.... certainly if anyone can maximize his skillset, it's chip. he'll be throwing like 30% of his passes behind the line of scrimmage or something.
― J0rdan S., Wednesday, 11 March 2015 19:23 (ten years ago)
if it's true that chip is serious about starting bradford (and that this isn't really him holding some mariotta card really close to his chest) i gotta imagine he was attracted to the guy's low interception rate + wonderlic score. idk what to make of the various other statistics that demonstrate he was one of the league's worst performing QBs - are those things that chip can help w/? does he just need a smart, quick thinking guy who doesn't make bad decisions to execute the scheme?
― Mordy, Wednesday, 11 March 2015 19:58 (ten years ago)
i think the actual answer is more typical nfl--pat shurmur coached bradford and thinks he can make him work.
― call all destroyer, Wednesday, 11 March 2015 20:04 (ten years ago)
i do think it's important to remember that bradford has a real pedigree ... we've seen him play in the NFL for a while and obv all that stuff is important but he was a first overall pick, he was prolific in college, he has a high level of natural talent
he played with obviously bad players and was coached by pretty obviously bad coaches and the last time he played he was pretty good....
personally i don't think there's a strong chance that bradford plays all season and is just bad. i think if this comes back to bite chip it's if bradford gets hurt and he has sanchez back there again for like 12 games. but given bradford what bradford is good at chip should be able to make it work.
― J0rdan S., Wednesday, 11 March 2015 20:09 (ten years ago)
one thing re the injury element is that for the second straight season the eagles have ranked really high for health + low injury rates which is something i imagine has more to do w/ the staff (and is reliable) than the individual players
― Mordy, Wednesday, 11 March 2015 20:10 (ten years ago)
i mean assuming 2 years is a trend and chip's physical wellbeing regime works, and not just coincidental
― Mordy, Wednesday, 11 March 2015 20:11 (ten years ago)
the bigger concern for me is bradford staying healthy and having a marginally good year and then the eagles feeling compelled to give him like a joe flacco contract

How much would it have cost Indy to keep Reggie Wayne? Surely Johnson is a lateral move (and if Wayne wanted more, then I guess Indy did the right thing.)

no way, reggie has nothing left in the tank
― call all destroyer, Wednesday, 11 March 2015 23:54 (ten years ago)
I think Andre Johnson is pretty much Reggie Wayne of two or three seasons ago. Wayne really wasn't quite the same this past year and as the season went on, he was less apart of the Colts offense. I got to think if INdy thought Wayne could get it done, they would have kept him around.
I'd figure Johnson and Gore going to Indy is them playing for a ring. They both have been great players, but a couple of nice years with a championship in Indy would finalize them getting a yellow sports coat for their collection.

These guys the Raiders got seems pretty reasonable and correct way to go. I'm interested to see how they will draft this year, I think they got a starting QB last year and have a couple of really good other players. AFC West is a pretty competitive division right now and with changes in Denver, the division winner could change next season. I don't think Oaktown?LA will be there yet, but I could believe the silver and black could be more competitive.

“The other thing that [the Bucs] are not a big fan of, and you’re going to hear more about this, they are not big fans of his personality,” Cummings said. “And you’ve got one very engaging guy with loads of charisma. He’s likeable when you get around him, in Jameis Winston. And then you’ve got another guy who’s very introverted, very quiet. He doesn’t really command your attention when you’re around him, a very quiet soft-spoken guy.
“The Bucs are looking at it and saying, you know, ‘I got a guy here that kind of grabs you by the throat when he’s in the huddle and says, ‘We’re going guys. We’ve got 82 yards to go. We’ve got a minute and 12 seconds to do it. We’re going to get there.’ And then you’ve got another guy who, I don’t know what he says in the huddle, but it doesn’t come across that way, at least according to scouts it doesn’t.

"big d-lineman scoops a fumble for a td that would be game-tying with an extra point except oops he weighs 350 lbs and can't kick"
Lou Groza and Pat Summerall both were lineman that also kicked, so there is.
Here is aline I just read about Groza out of wiki that seems appropriate for this discussion.
"The Browns next faced the Los Angeles Rams in the championship game. Groza came into the game as the NFL's leading kicker, both in terms of points scored and accuracy. He had a success rate of 68.4% in an era when most teams made fewer than half of their attempts.[22]"
It will never become a rule, but I think having someone who scored the goal having to do the kick seems something that fits with the origins of the sport. Some clubs would just always go for two, which is better than a kick anyway.

mariota trade up gossip power rankings currently seem to be
1. Browns2. Eagles3. Bears
so obv not going to be any of them. suspiciously little talk about nyjets so probably them. the whole chargers thing seems to have died which is a shame, that was fun. seems clear that tenn are not going to be picking second one way or another.

can't believe every(any)thing you read of course but supposedly cleveland really want bradford and the only thing that might hold up a 3 way trade is tennessee getting greedy
― Roberto Spiralli, Thursday, 30 April 2015 19:47 (ten years ago)
if eagles trade bradford they won't get the conditional 2016 pick from the rams. i guess maybe still worth it if mariotta turns out to be a franchise qb but it's getting awfully expensive.
― Mordy, Thursday, 30 April 2015 19:54 (ten years ago)
i mean titans should maximize the return on what they're giving up, i can't blame em.
but at this point i think chip is done, i believe he said he'd received offers to trade up from other teams and for sam bradford and he rejected them way earlier, like right at the beginning of free agency. he's already taking a huge gamble and it'd prob be better to see if anything he has works
― slothroprhymes, Thursday, 30 April 2015 19:57 (ten years ago)
then again this is applying reason to decision-makers in professional sports - those based in philadelphia, no less - and that is a fool's errand
could be that hinkie has been whispering in chip's ear
― slothroprhymes, Thursday, 30 April 2015 19:58 (ten years ago)

Well I would say this about Alvin Dupree, if you are a linebacker going to Pittsburgh has been a darn good place to play for about 40 years. UK doesn't get too many first round picks, although Randall Cobb has had a nice career with the Packers. There are a couple of other starters out there in the NFL from Kentucky.

i keep reading how teams are clamoring over his signature and i can't believe that no one thought the risk was worth throwing a 7th rounder at him. now he can choose where he goes and appears to have the leverage to get paid - outside of actually going round 1 i don't think this could've worked out better for him.
― Roberto Spiralli, Thursday, 7 May 2015 13:39 (ten years ago)
During the draft, his agent put out notice that if he wasn't drafted in rounds 1 or 2, he'd sit out a year and wait for 2016. That probably scared most teams off from taking him in a low round.
― Johnny Fever, Thursday, 7 May 2015 16:56 (ten years ago)
his agent fucked up. once you declare for the draft if you're not drafted you can't be drafted in future drafts. there's also a pretty low maximum salary they allow for undrafted free-agents. like I think they don't allow a signing bonus or something like that. I could be wrong but my understanding is his agent fucked up badly.
― balls, Thursday, 7 May 2015 17:01 (ten years ago)
interesting, a max for undrafted players makes sense. not sure exactly how it would work but in theory you might have a 1st pick guy engineering a situation where he goes undrafted to the highest bidder instead of in the draft.
― Roberto Spiralli, Thursday, 7 May 2015 17:05 (ten years ago)
welp, he just got 3 years guaranteed from dallas! can't find details on the salary
― slothroprhymes, Thursday, 7 May 2015 18:09 (ten years ago)
he got $1.7 million guaranteed, which i read is equivalent to a high second round pick.
i.e. the bears second round pick got $1.9 million guaranteed last year http://articles.chicagotribune.com/2014-05-15/sports/chi-five-draft-picks-contracts-details-20140514_1_picks-bears-nfl-source
the total value of the contract is much less than a second round pick but as we all know total value of nfl contracts is meaningless
if he was gonna be a top 15 pick he def lost himself a few million bucks, but if he had slid in the first round for whatever reason it prob didn't end up being a massive dent for him
and he got to pick his team, and i bet if he's good in one of those first two years jerruh will gladly rip up that contract
― J0rdan S., Thursday, 7 May 2015 19:01 (ten years ago)
def seems like this was a much better route than being a pick in the third round or later
it sort of makes you wonder about second round picks somehow making it so they don't get drafted, essentially turning them into free agents who could pick their team and still secure a salary equivalent to where they would have been picked in the first place
― J0rdan S., Thursday, 7 May 2015 19:03 (ten years ago)

― irl sweatpants (Hunt3r), Thursday, 7 May 2015 19:44 (ten years ago)
yeah i thought i'd read somewhere (deadspin probably)that there was no way for him to recoup that money. that made sense to me cuz the nfl is crazy protective of their draft and anything where a player has in any way fought against the status quo there (elway, eli, clarett) has always freaked them out. crazy they could have a loophole where a player could basically threaten his way into free agency, get his pick of teams, and not suffer too much financially for it.

Anthony Davis of the 49ers has retired from the NFL today.
Here is his statement:
After a few years of thought, I've decided it will be best for me to take a year or so away from the NFL. This will be a time for me to allow my Brain and Body a chance to heal. I know many won't understand my decision, that's ok.I hope you too have the courage to live your life how you planned it when day dreaming to yourself growing up. Your Life is Your dream and you have the power to control that dream. Im simply doing what's best for my body as well as my mental health at this time in my life.
Sincerely, Anthony Davis

You know after going through that type of training, I always wondered if the NFL's injury list was kinda of a HIPAA violation in that it was workplace injury information being shared in the media.

Those shitheads are making oceans of money from this business and if public support were to wane, so would their profits. The NFL wants the entire brain injury issue to disappear from the public mind. This was just another instance of denial and suppression in an endless line of such actions by the NFL. I don't expect these attempts at suppressing public awareness will ever end.

i mean if you're paying 5 bucks for it, why not

yeah i'm figuring i paid three times that for jurassic world so i might as well. btw seatgeek has this thing where they'll give you a $20 refund off yr first purchase if you use the code 'lowe' (there are other codes you can google, i just remember that one from zach lowe's podcast) if anyone else is thinking 'hell i'd pay $4 to see the browns' or whatever.

ive watched a little of the pre-season, so eager ive been for the season to start. ive been immediately reminded that in football, with its requirement of complete commitment and utter disregard for personal safety, a non-competitive game hardly resembles the real thing. if youre literally paying 5 bux then of course you should go, you can always leave early.

if the stadium was right there and it was no more than $20 i would rock up for a preseason game and leave at halftime, especially game 2 or 3. however, foxboro is a giant pain in the ass to get to and i think preseason tix start at $40 for the shitty seats.

yeah these seats are being sold second hand, when you buy seasons tickets you have to buy preseason tickets also and alot of ppl just unload them for whatever they can get.

I can see not liking him from the outside, but I ride or die with Phil. When he retires I'll probably stop following the Bolts. Especially if they move to LA.

Phillips is serving a sentence of more than 31 years. He was convicted of choking his girlfriend and later of driving his car into three teens after a pickup football game.

Reggie McKenzie is a shitty GM but the league let him snatch up two fucking incredible players in Cooper and Mack.

It's pretty amazing how universally he's considered a bust after one year. Usually corners get a lot of rope

dion jordan for dj hayden and menelik watson was... not the most impactful trade

'Bout time for week 1 thread, any nominations for the quote line on the thread?
"Obama: Even Tom Brady is glad he belongs to a union. They had his back. And if Brady needs a union - we definitely need unions."
