― mookieproof, Thursday, 9 November 2017 14:57 (seven years ago)
the owners are mad at goodell for not making more of a stand against the protests, and jerry in particular is mad about his RB being penalized for domestic violence, so basically the only ethical things roger has done in his tenure, possibly his life.
― Roberto Spiralli, Thursday, 9 November 2017 16:12 (seven years ago)
Hey on the bright side "they" are at least not talking about the fact that the players are literally scrambling their brains to play the game anymore.

hey what do you know another top ten NFL talent/personality is (most liekly) out for the season. looks like sherman tore his achilles.
i was at the game tonight and there were SO many injuries, and penalties. theres just no flow to an nfl game. people were yawning by the third quarter. one cool play and the was just meh, lotta runs for two yards.

omg. bears challenged a run that was called out of bounds at the 1, saying it was a TD. the result of the challenge is that the ball was fumbled into the pylon, touchback and turnover.

― Roberto Spiralli, Monday, 13 November 2017 15:47 (seven years ago)
he's not but I also think he B.S'd his way out of GB by slandering a team doctor
its really a strange situation all around, I guess I would care more if the dude had done anything but drop footballs
― frogbs, Monday, 13 November 2017 15:49 (seven years ago)
i seriously doubt bennett was trying to get out or angling for a move. i think he has an injury that he can maybe play through and he just didn't want to take on the risk that entails for a very reduced team with prob no real prospects of competing. pack fans are mad about it but it is 100% reasonable imo. and for all this "slandering" business, what is the reason to doubt anything he claimed?
― Roberto Spiralli, Monday, 13 November 2017 15:52 (seven years ago)

the fact that a bunch of Packers and ex-Packers (including Jermichael Finley, who probably spent more time with him than anyone) felt the need to make public statements says something to me
it is understandable from Bennett's POV given where he's at in his career, but still. whole thing is strange.

PHILADELPHIA -- The way Eagles wide receiver Alshon Jeffery sees it, his Super Bowl guarantee is still in play.
Following a 3-13 season with the Chicago Bears in 2016, Jeffery raised some eyebrows in January by saying, "I guarantee you we'll win the Super Bowl next year."
The Bears are currently last in the NFC North at 3-7, and Jeffery is in Philadelphia after signing a one-year deal worth as much as $14 million in free agency.
But Jeffery suggested that guarantee traveled with him.
"I never said a team, though," said Jeffery at his locker stall Tuesday, raising an eyebrow and offering a smile. "I never said a team."

Not a single match up on Sunday that is compelling. Really the best game might be a battle of Ohio between the Browns and Bengals, as that MIGHT be the only time the Browns win and those games are kinda usually tight.
― earlnash, Sunday, 26 November 2017 05:18 (seven years ago)
Saints and Rams could be good, but obviously since it is a good matchup it is NOT the national game.
― earlnash, Sunday, 26 November 2017 05:19 (seven years ago)
saints and rams should be a great game. at least they flexed it to the main late afternoon game. i guess steelers vs packers is too big name to bump it from primetime.

UtilizeA noxious puff-word. Since it does nothing that good old use doesn’t do, its extra letters and syllables don’t make a writer seem smarter; rather, using utilize makes you seem either like a pompous twit or like someone so insecure that she’ll use pointlessly big words in an attempt to look sophisticated. The same is true for the noun utilization, for vehicle as used for car, for residence as used for house, for presently, at present, at this time, and at the present time as used for now, and so on. What’s worth remembering about puff-words is something that good writing teachers spend a lot of time drumming into undergrads: “formal writing” does not mean gratuitously fancy writing; it means clean, clear, maximally considerate writing.

― call all destroyer, Wednesday, 29 November 2017 03:29 (seven years ago)
It's ok, but unnecessary.
My manager is a good guy, but instead of saying "use", or even "utilize", he favors the phrase "utilize or leverage". Not sure why he does, but it always makes me antsy.

― Roberto Spiralli, Monday, 4 December 2017 14:38 (seven years ago)
the fact that no one can score any points on them including making the ball go through the field goal unit is odd considering theyre clearly not actually that good at defense
― lag∞n, Monday, 4 December 2017 14:42 (seven years ago)

afc is pats and steelers plus dark horse ravens (+incredible defense, +collins, -flacco & entire rest of offense). jags as extremely dark horses, barely visible? and then like the titans and a team from the west. p gross.
nfc is vikes, eagles, saints bunched pretty close together and rams probably just a step behind. i don't really believe in the panthers or banged up seahawks. one of packers or falcons could possibly push seattle out but idk about that.

crabtree kind of strangled talib on the sideline and threw a punch that missed, so he did do something at least. i can understand him getting ejected, hard to untangle those on the spot, but he should never have been suspended. talib 2nd time chain snatching prob had to get a suspension. problem with suspension as a tool in the nfl of course is the difficulty of graduating its use, you only get 1/16th blocks. i don't think talib should've been suspended one eighth his whole season and i don't think gronk should've either.

― Roberto Spiralli, Monday, 11 December 2017 01:50 (seven years ago)
Cleveland's a bad team but they're not *this* bad, they're not like the 0-16 Lions where there's a dearth of talent at every position. They've got some good pieces, their defense seems above average, they've hung in a lot of the games they've lost. They just have this propensity for doing the worst possible thing in clutch moments; Kizer just randomly chucking the ball up for grabs in OT is kind of a microcosm of their entire season.
― frogbs, Monday, 11 December 2017 02:43 (seven years ago)

WHYHYYHYYYYYYY
― Mordy, Monday, 11 December 2017 17:31 (seven years ago)
i really think philly will still be competitive. there have been several reasons they have been so good this year and wentz has only been one, and imo not even the most important. a lot of the reasons he has been successful can carry over to a lesser qb. when foles looked good for a minute, back when, it was because of scheme opening up throws for him just as has been happening this season for wentz. i am sure foles can run all these rpos. they will still score points and they still have maybe the best defense in the league. more than this being the disaster ppl seem to be painting it as, losing any edge against a tough and deep nfc field will be what hurts them, not that they suddenly turn terrible.
― Roberto Spiralli, Monday, 11 December 2017 17:31 (seven years ago)
foles looked pretty good yesterday despite having a kicker's name
kayvon webster's achilles was also non-contact iirc
― mookieproof, Monday, 11 December 2017 17:35 (seven years ago)
beating NO, Seattle, Minn, returned Rodgers GB was going to be hard enough WITH wentz.
i'm sorry i'm just so sad i don't really want to think about football any more today or maybe even again :/ :( :'(
― Mordy, Monday, 11 December 2017 17:35 (seven years ago)
appreciate your confidence but GB's got a long way to go, they've got to not only get Rodgers back right now but also beat 2 playoff teams + the Lions, plus get some help elsewhere in the bracket because 10-6 may not do it in the NFC this year
― frogbs, Monday, 11 December 2017 18:59 (seven years ago)
either way this definitely sucks, I'm not really a fan of Philly but they're damn fun to watch, one of the few bright spots on a terrible season. reminds me a bit of the Derek Carr injury a couple years back, though this is worse obviously. good news is that Foles is alright; he was a starter, he knows the offense, and idk Wentz doesn't seem completely irreplaceable...this team is great all around, this ain't exactly an Aaron Rodgers type situation
― frogbs, Monday, 11 December 2017 19:02 (seven years ago)
if the defense steps up it could still be something special but look it's hard to overstate what losing wentz means. he was the heart of the team, probable MVP, just playing out of his mind this season. it's extremely painful as a philly fan today :/
― Mordy, Monday, 11 December 2017 19:03 (seven years ago)
wentz has been absurdly good on third down and in the red zone and i feel like going from that to even league average production (if foles can provide that) will be a huge step down
― k3vin k., Monday, 11 December 2017 19:26 (seven years ago)
you may be overestimating wentz's contribution to that production
― Roberto Spiralli, Monday, 11 December 2017 19:31 (seven years ago)
this has not been the kind of situation with an elite qb dragging a bunch of chumps up and down the field. they have installed a really nice, innovative, complementary offense with a bunch of strong parts
― Roberto Spiralli, Monday, 11 December 2017 19:33 (seven years ago)
sure, but wentz' personal numbers in those situations have been great. that's not just going to continue
the eagles are a very good all-around team tho and should continue to be competitive, but their SB chances obv took a huge hit
― k3vin k., Monday, 11 December 2017 19:39 (seven years ago)
a hit, sure. but they didn't lose an mvp calibre qb, they never really had one. eagles fans should be able to spot the difference.

Being entrusted with the Bengals job is like becoming the night watchman at a low-budget museum. As long as you don't screw up horrifically, you'll be able to keep the job for about as long as you want. Heck, even if you do an awful job, you're probably going to get some time. Marvin Lewis has had the job for 14 years without a playoff victory, of course, but think about the guys before him. Bruce Coslet made it into a fifth year with a 21-39 record. He replaced David Shula, who made it nearly five years himself with a 19-52 mark. Cincinnati moves at a glacial pace.

Looks like Marvin Lewis is going to leave this year, maybe to move into a front office job with Cincy. His career record is pretty mediocre but over .500 and the playoff record is hard to leave be, but the guy did find a ton of talented players over the years. AFC Central has also been one of the most competitive divisions in football over that same time. Pats and Colts didn't have to deal with playing the Steelers and Ravens 4 games a year along with getting over them every year to make the playoffs.
― earlnash, Sunday, 17 December 2017 23:10 (seven years ago)
Everybody was clowning on Lovie Smith a few years ago for similar middling success, but you got to look at the last few years of the Bears and wonder that he might have had more going right than appeared.
It is hard to remember now how bad the Bengals were for such a long time before Lewis took over and at least got things somewhat balanced back out.

― lag∞n, Monday, 18 December 2017 00:40 (seven years ago)
crossing the goal line seems beside the point tho like you cldve made that attempt entirely in the end zone and its still not a catch
― lag∞n, Monday, 18 December 2017 00:41 (seven years ago)
anyway i think we can all agree that the call was good because it allowed the patriots to steal the game on the int making it one of the alltime looniest last few minutes ever in an nfl game + the fact that it was a good game in its entirety, also it was good because it allowed the patriots to achieve the tie breaker with pitt instead of being two games behind them
― lag∞n, Monday, 18 December 2017 00:46 (seven years ago)
Steelers just can't beat the Pats. I think that is now 3-11 in the Belichick era.
― earlnash, Monday, 18 December 2017 00:54 (seven years ago)
maybe for the best, the only coach iirc with any measure of success against the Pats was Mike Shanahan and Belichick took revenge by murdering his son in the super bowl last year.

Missed one game this year and was this one of course. Maybe for the best with my heart condition. Watched British nfl highlights show, which was even more horrific than I expected, and got a proper look at the controversial call which...well, I'm sure it was very exciting at the time, but I didn't expect it to be quite so obviously not a catch. Anyway, that played out like the recent Pats super bowl wins, so might be done for the year now. Divisional round loss to bmore prediction continuing to look strong.

Gore gonna go down as one of the most underrated players ever. Pretty crazy that he’s had the consistency and durability he has as someone who blew out both knees before he played in the NFL.
― Spottie, Saturday, 23 December 2017 23:51 (seven years ago)
Also kind of proof that it takes luck to be a star. He was on a lot of crappy teams in SF and then signs with Indy thinking that is going to be a chance to get in the playoffs and be on good clubs and they turned into crud.

Running back is weird in that way when discussing the greats, as you got some players that got hurt young Bo Jackson, Gayle Sayers, Billy Sims etc. and then you got people like Herschel Walker and Ricky Williams who by what you know really were a couple of the best of all time but their careers turned out really weird.
― earlnash, Sunday, 24 December 2017 00:16 (seven years ago)

― Spottie, Sunday, 24 December 2017 00:18 (seven years ago)
Emmitt Smith was great, but the dude had the luck of both being on the best exact place to put up tons and tons of yards and being durable enough to play forever. Smith was a masher and great running back to just pound the rock, but I can probably name on a hand at least a handful of guys I saw play that were more dangerous because of their speed and moves etc.
― earlnash, Sunday, 24 December 2017 00:19 (seven years ago)

― Spottie, Sunday, 24 December 2017 04:23 (seven years ago)

― Spottie, Sunday, 24 December 2017 04:24 (seven years ago)
Smith would have been really good, but it would not have been as easy and he probably would have taken a worse pounding. Larry Allen alone, that era Cowboy o-line was the best of it's time.
Sanders kept a bunch of his teams in the game. They never got over that next level, but they won quite a few games. A couple of times they had a good passing games, they just couldn't get it all together to take that next step.
― earlnash, Sunday, 24 December 2017 06:46 (seven years ago)
feel like every lions season they had sanders they had to win out their last three games to make the playoffs and save their coaches job and they always did it then lost in the first round

http://www.espn.com/nfl/story/_/id/21863467/teams-complain-nfl-green-bay-packers-violated-ir-rule-think-aaron-rodgers-released
Multiple teams complained to the NFL last week that the Packers violated the rules regarding players who are eligible to be placed on injured reserve -- and that Green Bay should have to release quarterback Aaron Rodgers as a result, league sources told ESPN.NFL rules stipulate that a player needs to have suffered a new injury that would sideline him at least six weeks to be placed on injured reserve. If that is not the case, the team is obligated to release the player once he is healthy.

Who is going to beat the Pats? Steelers in Gillette? Jags? I would think anything less than getting to the Superbowl would be a let down. They are not anywhere near the best of the Pats teams or anything over the past decade or so, but the league is pretty mushy these days on good teams.
Eagles would probably be the big favorite if old boy hadn't got hurt, as they do look pretty good all the way around.
One of those NFC South could get hot and go to the Superbowl. Vikings are pretty good all the way around, so maybe they make it their year. I'd be good with that scenario myself. I'd like to have bet 20 on the Rams going to the Superbowl way back around the draft, that might turn out to be a pretty good payoff if it happens and it is still a long shot at this point.

There is a certain sweetness to read about a bunch of Cowboys hand wringing. It is good when not is all going well in Jerrahworld. It's funny that their stadium is the ultimate neutral site, even for the Cowboys. I'll be kind of surprised if Garrett gets fired, but man, he might kind of wish he does.
It's also hilarious that the Hatcats have screwed around and probably going to lose their QB. It's been a LONG LONG time since even a decent QB changed teams. I got to think Cousins is going to Denver, that makes way too much sense. They still have some picks and some good players. Got to wonder, would this had finally been the time and place for Wade Phillips to have been a head coach? Dude that defense really tuned up. Don't know.
Kinda curious in where Bruce Arians goes. If he leaves AZ, which he probably should - I got to think the Colts or Broncos might give him a call.

I kinda don't think Hue Jackson is nearly as bad a head coach as his 1-31 record would indicate, but it's a number that is impossible to live down.
John McKay lost a ton of games with the Bucs, but he had won 4 national titles at USC, so he gets a pass.
Kinda surprised that Jim Caldwell got the boot in Detroit. I always a bit suspect of him in Indy, but really I think he did about as good as possible with what he had with the Lions. Did anyone really pick the Lions to be any better than 9-7?

― lag∞n, Tuesday, 2 January 2018 04:22 (seven years ago)
Thompson and Capers definitely deserve credit for their Super Bowl year - Thompson hit on a number of undrafted free agents that had to take the place of injured starters, and Capers' defense was great. In retrospect it's kind of obvious that Ted just got lucky one year, and the defense benefitted greatly from both statistical variance (I think they led the league turnover margin) and the presence of a surprisingly resurgent Charles Woodson. You also had Matthews and Raji playing at a level they wouldn't hit the rest of their careers. Their defense fell apart the very next year, which tends not to matter when you're averaging 35 points a game, but they definitely paid the price later on...
