Roberto Spiralli, Thursday, 4 January 2018 16:04 (seven years ago)

i got home sweep

Roberto Spiralli, Thursday, 4 January 2018 16:06 (seven years ago)

falcons might have a shot? but yeah

mookieproof, Thursday, 4 January 2018 16:28 (seven years ago)

that does look like the closest game. chiefs are prob the worst of the home teams but titans are so bad.

Roberto Spiralli, Thursday, 4 January 2018 16:35 (seven years ago)

can i just tell you how excited everyone in L.A. is to have the Rams in the playoffs? sports fans here can't stop talking about Paul George.

omar little, Thursday, 4 January 2018 17:14 (seven years ago)

feel like we should just give kc and jax byes and make tennessee play buffalo in a snowstorm for funsies

mookieproof, Thursday, 4 January 2018 17:18 (seven years ago)

the idea of Buffalo at Jacksonville in a playoff game would've sounded so crazy a year ago

frogbs, Thursday, 4 January 2018 19:21 (seven years ago)

the buffalo bills will win the nfl playoffs

lag∞n, Thursday, 4 January 2018 19:26 (seven years ago)

It's a pretty wacky playoff lineup, if NE nor the Steelers don't win it, someone unexpected and new is going to win.

earlnash, Saturday, 6 January 2018 02:02 (seven years ago)

People are giving decent shots to Carolina or New Orleans to make it, since they got to the big game. Atlanta did get better as the season went on.

Obviously Carolina and New Orleans is the match up of the week with marquee QBs of differing styles both of which have played in a Super Bowl. Carolina isn't great, but they are solid. Saints seem to have a decent defense and plenty of offensive weapons. Saints seem to me the favorite and my pick, but I would believe the Panthers winning too. It's close to a pick em game to me.

KC is up and down, but if they lose to the Titans - eh, that would be bad. Titans deserve some credit for moving up into the playoffs when really, they didn't have that good a year and have room for improvement at QB (which could still happen).

This is a pretty epic game for Bills fans, as they finally get back in to the playoffs and face their once middling head coach who went "nah, I'll pass" and walked on out the door when offered a new contract. J-Ville seems kinda similar to the Vikings in style. They should win the game as they are just a better team.

Rams had a good year but I think I got to go with many talking heads and take the Falcons on the road.

earlnash, Saturday, 6 January 2018 02:11 (seven years ago)

Go Rams!

they are easily going to win this game, next week will be an issue...

Bee OK, Saturday, 6 January 2018 03:48 (seven years ago)

how was that not a fumble

mookieproof, Saturday, 6 January 2018 22:53 (seven years ago)

I was so bored but now this is fun

Bee OK, Sunday, 7 January 2018 00:43 (seven years ago)

chiefs offense has been absolute piss in the 2nd half, it will be a travesty if they do anything with the last possession.

Roberto Spiralli, Sunday, 7 January 2018 00:45 (seven years ago)

lol nm. that was a hell of a play

Roberto Spiralli, Sunday, 7 January 2018 00:46 (seven years ago)

Nail in the coffin

Bee OK, Sunday, 7 January 2018 00:47 (seven years ago)

Awwwww

frogbs, Sunday, 7 January 2018 00:47 (seven years ago)

So brutal for those fans

frogbs, Sunday, 7 January 2018 00:49 (seven years ago)

A one point game

Bee OK, Sunday, 7 January 2018 00:51 (seven years ago)

Bee OK, Sunday, 7 January 2018 00:58 (seven years ago)

mookieproof, Sunday, 7 January 2018 00:59 (seven years ago)

They dominated the 1st half

Bee OK, Sunday, 7 January 2018 01:00 (seven years ago)

So lol at them chocking

Bee OK, Sunday, 7 January 2018 01:01 (seven years ago)

"Marcus Mariota passed to Marcus Mariota to the left for 6 yard touchdown (Ryan Succop made PAT)"

Just checked the score and saw this description, that must have been a weird play.

Andy Reid is a forever goat. He can go get him a chair next to Marty at the old coaches home.

earlnash, Sunday, 7 January 2018 01:04 (seven years ago)

hey, andy reid is the most innovative hc in the league right now

Roberto Spiralli, Sunday, 7 January 2018 01:07 (seven years ago)

Marcus Mariota threw a TD to himself. WHAT?! #Chiefs #Titans pic.twitter.com/53KFxA5cUh

Bee OK, Sunday, 7 January 2018 01:13 (seven years ago)

Bee OK, Sunday, 7 January 2018 01:13 (seven years ago)

I think I'm the only Rams fan on this board

Bee OK, Sunday, 7 January 2018 01:27 (seven years ago)

I don't think this will be like 2010 for me

Bee OK, Sunday, 7 January 2018 01:28 (seven years ago)

there will be no points this game

lag∞n, Sunday, 7 January 2018 01:31 (seven years ago)

Lol. Aren't the Rams the highest scoring team

Bee OK, Sunday, 7 January 2018 01:32 (seven years ago)

In the league?

Bee OK, Sunday, 7 January 2018 01:33 (seven years ago)

bnw was our st louis rams fan but st louis no longer has rams and ilx no longer has bnw

Roberto Spiralli, Sunday, 7 January 2018 01:33 (seven years ago)

i love when the ball boinks around

Bee OK, Sunday, 7 January 2018 01:39 (seven years ago)

But f*** them plus they moved out of San Francisco

Bee OK, Sunday, 7 January 2018 01:39 (seven years ago)

i desperately hate how the rams have a little piece of their gold uniform on their sleeves

lag∞n, Sunday, 7 January 2018 01:40 (seven years ago)

the rams & 9rs r historic enemies

lag∞n, Sunday, 7 January 2018 01:41 (seven years ago)

i am in favour of the gold sleeve detail, we are now enemies

Roberto Spiralli, Sunday, 7 January 2018 01:44 (seven years ago)

thats so fd up man

lag∞n, Sunday, 7 January 2018 01:50 (seven years ago)

Seeing that play, I guess Mariotta has a play for the career playoff reel.

Chef fans have to have some angst. They have had a decent number of winning clubs that have not done bupkus in the playoffs like over 20 years. It's a weight lesser than what towns like Cleveland carry, but the Chiefs could not get it done even with Joe Montana.

earlnash, Sunday, 7 January 2018 01:56 (seven years ago)

still sad about the 13-3 herm/trent green chiefs

Roberto Spiralli, Sunday, 7 January 2018 02:03 (seven years ago)

also, mariota's best play of the game was the run block he threw on that game killing 3rd down conversion

Roberto Spiralli, Sunday, 7 January 2018 02:04 (seven years ago)

there shd be a timeout flag just my opinion give the coaches more flags

lag∞n, Sunday, 7 January 2018 02:09 (seven years ago)

ATL and LA look pretty evenly matched. ATL's D line was really pushing LA around early in the game.

earlnash, Sunday, 7 January 2018 03:16 (seven years ago)

rams made things happen at the end of the first half by changing up their approach on offense and for some reason they are back to getting murdered by the atlanta d line and running for -3y on 1st down

Roberto Spiralli, Sunday, 7 January 2018 03:48 (seven years ago)

ugh that fucking 3rd down draw, assholes

Roberto Spiralli, Sunday, 7 January 2018 03:54 (seven years ago)

rip los amgeles football

lag∞n, Sunday, 7 January 2018 04:12 (seven years ago)

Just dump it off and burn some clock good thinking

Spottie, Sunday, 7 January 2018 04:18 (seven years ago)

Roberto Spiralli, Sunday, 7 January 2018 04:19 (seven years ago)

damn wanted to see the famous onside kick

lag∞n, Sunday, 7 January 2018 04:19 (seven years ago)

well, there's basically no route to victory for carolina from this point. it's a horrible match up for them, they have had success controlling games but you can't really play brees that way. no surprise that they are going to finish 0/3 for the season against NO.

Roberto Spiralli, Sunday, 7 January 2018 23:01 (seven years ago)

on another note, buck/aikman is by some distance the worst coverage team now. for some reason i imagine buck at least to be untouchable but fox needs to replace them both.

could've easily been PI and ball inside the 5

Roberto Spiralli, Monday, 8 January 2018 00:47 (seven years ago)

i liked the 4th down call for NO, this offense should make that a high % of the time. if they lose this game, that's not the reason why. in fact, it's the first time all half they've looked like they were trying to win the game instead of not lose their lead

Roberto Spiralli, Monday, 8 January 2018 00:49 (seven years ago)

earlnash, Monday, 8 January 2018 22:18 (seven years ago)

maybe I'm biased b/c I want the Vikings to lose, but Saints +4 looks like a pretty good line, no? hate to sound like a bad pundit here but experience, star power, and coaching all seem to matter more in the playoffs and the Saints have an advantage in all three. Vikings have been damn impressive but don't these sorts of Cinderella teams usually wilt in the playoffs?

frogbs, Monday, 8 January 2018 22:18 (seven years ago)

It's probably a pickem game and you have the fact that Minnesota has had some shite luck in the playoffs. That said, every good team had to win it for the first time. Vikings defense is real, but if New Orleans gets up a couple scores early that will be trouble as you don't want Keenum and Co. to have to start chucking it around pass happy.

You could probably make the same case for Atlanta to beat Philly too.

earlnash, Monday, 8 January 2018 22:27 (seven years ago)

I'm sorry how are the Vikings at 13-3 with a statistically dominant defense a "Cinderella" team?

Joan Digimon (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Monday, 8 January 2018 23:36 (seven years ago)

listen I get you have cheddar clogging your synapses and the Saints are a good team and Brees is one of the best, so we could lose but I guarantee no one one this board has watched this team more than I have and this defense is brutal to deal with.

if anything I would actually try to about putting it on the passing game. a direct power run game is probably their closest thing to a weakness.

Joan Digimon (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Monday, 8 January 2018 23:38 (seven years ago)

was looking back at the reg season meeting and brees had a fair game but the vikes run defense crushed NO. admittedly that was back when kamara was still sharing snaps with peterson, but he was still sub 3y per. their run game got stopped in the wild card game too but brees was still able to chuck it around when they needed him to - he got nearly 400y despite being kinda shackled a lot of the 2nd half - in a way he won't be able to against MN. i do think it is really close but i can easily imagine another 20 point game for NO and i think the vikes win that p much every time.

Roberto Spiralli, Tuesday, 9 January 2018 00:16 (seven years ago)

this weekend harks back to the avian battles of yore when a veritable cornucopia of polish quarterbacks -- steve bartkowski and ron jaworski -- led their raptor-monikered teams against each other

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p41_M_mehG0

mookieproof, Tuesday, 9 January 2018 00:20 (seven years ago)

the bird fight i can see being a p low scorer which opens the door for philly even tho i still think they are dogs overall. atl is cresting on the back of their defense right now and their offense, altho improved on early season, is still spluttering a bit. playing against a dominant defense is not where they want to be and if philly can squeeze another half decent game out of foles that could be enough for a 20-17.

Roberto Spiralli, Tuesday, 9 January 2018 00:30 (seven years ago)

I'm sorry how are the Vikings at 13-3 with a statistically dominant defense a "Cinderella" team?

coz they were projected to go 8-8 and the only player your average fan could pick out of a lineup is probably the backup QB. they don't seem too different from say that 08 Titans squad that rode a stellar defense to 13 wins

https://www.theringer.com/2018/1/9/16867564/playoffs-salary-cap-free-agent-spending-jaguars-eagles-patriots

another interesting piece by kevin clark in his productive vein of identifying trends that are becoming generally apparent and articulating them well. i think he oversells the impact of this but it is certainly real, you can't argue with the examples.

Incredibly, six of the top 10 2017 spenders in free agency, a period formerly reserved for desperate teams to throw money at anyone, made the playoffs: the Patriots, Titans, Rams, Vikings, Panthers, and Jaguars (who spent $20 million more than any other team).

the eagles not on this particular list but they are the first team i think of with their aggressive offseason and he covers them in detail later on.

casual ko shot on the browns to finish too, respect

— Blake Bortles Facts (@BortlesFacts) January 11, 2018

frogbs, Friday, 12 January 2018 19:28 (seven years ago)

Jaguars quarterback Blake Bortles deals with more criticism than any other starting quarterback in football, namely because he's not a good quarterback and he plays for a good football team that is currently in the midst of a playoff run. Though Bortles has occasionally flashed signs of improvement in his fourth season, the criticism has persisted as the Jaguars prepare for their upcoming game against the Steelers.

On Wednesday, when Bortles was asked about his critics, he acknowledged that the criticism will never stop. And then he made a really good point that has to do with LeBron James. Don't worry, he didn't compare himself to the greatest basketball player of all-time (cue the Michael Jordan arguments in the comment section below).

"It'll probably never stop," he said. "There's people who think LeBron James sucks. So if that happens, I'm sure there will always be people who always think I suck."

I get people kinda like Bortles or at least feel sorry for him not being that good. People just wanted to smack Jay Cutler for looking stupid.

Blake Bortles isn't having fun, he's just trying to get through his day at work.

Pitts gonna win this aren’t they

Spottie, Sunday, 14 January 2018 19:36 (seven years ago)

They’ve been winning games like this all season

frogbs, Sunday, 14 January 2018 19:38 (seven years ago)

they needed 2 p incredible scores just to be 2 tds behind. i think they'd need jax to do nothing on offense at all 2nd half but with fournette out or banged up that is a possibility i guess.

Roberto Spiralli, Sunday, 14 January 2018 19:40 (seven years ago)

and perhaps more relevantly they'll need jax defense not to score any more points

Roberto Spiralli, Sunday, 14 January 2018 19:41 (seven years ago)

Idk this really looks like another game winning fg sorta game for Pittsburgh

jax defense scored one and a turnover set up another, but fournette ran really well and bortles kept making plays! steelers defense did nothing of note all game tho.

Roberto Spiralli, Sunday, 14 January 2018 21:22 (seven years ago)

jags are exactly the kind of team NE loses to in the playoffs. as a rule of thumb, pats lose in the championship game when they don't score 20. fortunately the steelers revealed the blueprint for piling up the score on jax - just keep making insane plays to generational skill players. should be easy.

at least the pats won't give up 45 points i guess

Roberto Spiralli, Monday, 15 January 2018 03:34 (seven years ago)

bortles already feels like a trivia question answer, and keenum is probably most likely to have some kind of career after this season. i think foles would be the absolute weirdest addition to the list.

his one good year is viewed as a product of the period where chip kelly's offense took everyone by surprise and he hasn't really done anything since to suggest he can play

call all destroyer, Monday, 15 January 2018 04:10 (seven years ago)

so far this year he's at a crisp 5.3 yards/attempt which iirc puts him with the league's many checkdown artists

call all destroyer, Monday, 15 January 2018 04:11 (seven years ago)

above-average backup is exactly what he is, lot of worse guys but you don't really want him playing playoff games for you.

Roberto Spiralli, Monday, 15 January 2018 04:20 (seven years ago)

nfl cant be too happy abt this selection of teams

i think you could say this if it were the world series or the stanley cup, but ppl are gonna watch or not watch either way. no one but you bastards wants to see the pats win again, but at least one team will have a shot at their first-ever owl, which is cool

mookieproof, Monday, 15 January 2018 04:22 (seven years ago)

xp and yeah, if you take away that season where kelly made everyone shit their briefs, he has 50-something% completion rating for under 6y/attempt and 1:1 tds/ints

Roberto Spiralli, Monday, 15 January 2018 04:23 (seven years ago)

i mean yeah the nfl would probably not prefer a jags/vikes tilt for ratings purposes, but other than them who the f cares?

call all destroyer, Monday, 15 January 2018 04:24 (seven years ago)

i think they care they want to have marketable players and memorable games featuring popular teams, not three teams led by backup quality qbs and then the other one everyone hates

mookieproof, Monday, 15 January 2018 22:08 (seven years ago)

man I couldn't even recall who the hell they beat but then I remembered lol Andy Reid

I'm naturally biased against the Vikings but last night was cool as hell - you could see the script forming, the Vikings lack of experience vs. the seasoned and well-traveled Saints, Drew Brees coming through again while the Vikings choke yet another playoff game that they easily should have won....and then everything flipping on one freak play
the fact that it happened at home made it even better, just an awesome moment all around

also love that Super Bowl 52 will be started by either Nick Foles or Case Keenum and potentially Blake Bortles as well

frogbs, Monday, 15 January 2018 22:39 (seven years ago)

I'd love to see the Jags knock off the Pats by just running it down their throat and have Bortles break out with some early 70s pass line only throwing the ball say a dozen times.

earlnash, Tuesday, 16 January 2018 23:29 (seven years ago)

Cutting the Pats time of possession down is about the best way to fight your real high powered pass offense. Jacksonville is going to need a bit of fortune and get a couple turn overs and not make mistakes.

Bortles foibles aside, the Jags and Vikings play a pretty old school type of football. It's not all that different than what Parcell's did when he was with the Giants right down to that big line man two TE setup that the Jags like to use. That is straight out of the ole' Giants playbook with Mark Bavaro and Zeke Mowatt. Gibbs in Washington liked to run that same setup with a single back. I wonder what exactly were ownerships expectations for this year's Titans team? very strange

bhad and bhabie (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Wednesday, 17 January 2018 13:46 (seven years ago)

from what i read mularkey was asked to make changes to his staff, said no, and got canned.

call all destroyer, Wednesday, 17 January 2018 13:59 (seven years ago)

they asked him to hire an oc instead of doing it himself and he refused. if they are smart they are wondering why derrick henry only became the feature guy after murray got hurt but most likely they are wondering why they didn't get more return on the big payout for murray, and they are looking at the rams and chiefs and thinking - rightly or wrongly, idk - that they ought to be achieving more with mariota. there really isn't much about their offensive personnel to get excited about tho.

Roberto Spiralli, Wednesday, 17 January 2018 14:18 (seven years ago)

or i guess fire the guy they have as oc and find someone to really take over running the offense

Interesting that bad thing's happen to star players right before playing the Patriots. Just like Mariotas family going undercover from what was thought to be a missle attack the day they play the Patriots. Stuff happens way too much when playing the Patriots.

mookieproof, Wednesday, 17 January 2018 18:45 (seven years ago)

they were a top 10 offense and scored 42 in a playoff game, idk if Haley was the dude to blame

frogbs, Wednesday, 17 January 2018 18:57 (seven years ago)

eh they have a top tier qb and the best rb and wr in the league. that offense should be setting records, never mind top 10. there are other things too - a lot has been made of them having one of the lowest % of play action calls despite the threat of bell.

they have more fundamental problems but i certainly think letting haley walk was a good start. personally, i hate the way the roster is constructed with so much investment in a handful of stars. on the one hand you get an offense that can score those 42 points off of just a handful of big plays, but on the other hand you get a defense that is like heyward + tuitt + scrubs and it's a disaster. and that's even if the big names stay healthy.

Roberto Spiralli, Wednesday, 17 January 2018 19:16 (seven years ago)

haley seems to have a shelf life as far as anyone wanting to be around him goes.

fuck you, your hat is horrible (Neanderthal), Friday, 19 January 2018 01:12 (seven years ago)

ok, who ya got?

here is the key information i have accrued about vikes @ iggles

vikings have the best defense at stopping 3rd down conversions since the stat started to be tracked in 1991
nick foles has the worst 3rd down conversion % among starting qbs this year
(carson wentz had the best 3rd down rate earlier in the season)

vikings subpar o-line just about held together thru the regular season until they had to make adjustments after losing their LG at the end of december. now the wear is starting to show and it is bad, and looked real bad against the saints.
the strongest part of the eagles' roster is their elite and deep offensive line. the eagles forced the most 3 and outs, gave opposing qbs the shortest amount of time to throw, gave opposing teams the shortest total time of possession per game, and gave up the fewest rushing yards per game.

but...case keenum was either one of the best or the best qb vs pressure this season, depending on whose stats you use.

brady injury thing is a good reminder that the line is about predicting and responding to how ppl bet, and only part of that has to do with who might win the game. i think the crazy line in the first place was mostly brand recognition. there are a lot of ppl whose only bets during the year are late playoff games and the kentucky derby and they have to be accounted for

Foals' performance reminded me of Kerry Collins' 2000 NFC Championship game performance. Hopefully Foals doesn't shit the bed like Collins did in the Super Bowl, though.

Rod Steel (musicfanatic), Monday, 22 January 2018 19:11 (seven years ago)

foles isn't bad he's just v streaky. he's still in the HOF and had an insane season in 2013. check out this if you didn't already know: https://www.pro-football-reference.com/leaders/pass_rating_single_season.htm

Mordy, Monday, 22 January 2018 19:26 (seven years ago)

I'm sure having LeSean and DeSean helped a lot there. And it's only 10 games. But still....those are some all time numbers. Everyone else who's had a season like that has been a slam dunk Hall of Famer. Foles didn't even make it another year.

frogbs, Monday, 22 January 2018 19:35 (seven years ago)

i'm not going to say that any qb could've had foles's 2013 season since i have seen nfl qbs miss wide open receivers enough times, but that season was 100% scheme and foles was just making uncontested throws to wide open dudes. for one year chip's offense was a legit phenomenon in pro ball, sui generis, and other teams needed all season long to figure out how to counter it. foles has been below average to bad nearly every other game he played outside the season, until last night's performance where a couple times that worked dudes wide open e.g. the jeffrey bomb, but he was just making incredible plays otherwise. that one game means more to the evaluation of foles than the whole of 2013 imo.

Roberto Spiralli, Monday, 22 January 2018 20:11 (seven years ago)

ok, in my quest to understand the nfc championship game, i have learned the following:

the ringer published a completely content- and analysis-free 'article' called Everything the Vikings Are Good at Failed Against the Eagles. however, the title was the most important part of the whole thing and succinctly nails the game. p much everything that the vikings do well they were bad at and everything that has worked for them this season stopped working.

the vikings defense is in some ways very aggressive. not that they are blitzing all the time, but they play right in your face. on pass plays the safeties hardly ever drop deep in coverage and instead they hang around the gain line and make the short/intermediate part of the field very condensed, effective against the run and effective against the pass if you don't give up big plays doing it. their dbs are all good enough that they can play close in and dare qbs to try to go over them, and the danger of passes completed in front of them breaking into big YAC plays is minimized because the whole defense is one of the best tackling units in the league.

all of that went wrong. first, they couldn't tackle for shit. multiple times the eagles completed short of the sticks on 3rd down and the vikings couldn't wrap them up. really just a bizarre drop off. second, they made the pass plays minnesota was betting they couldn't. 2 factors here. first is scheme - pederson game planned out of his mind on this one, had a player as good as harrison smith, the clear best safety in football this year, chasing his tail on plays like the jeffrey bomb. 2nd cb trae waynes - who is not xavier rhodes but who was a 1st round pick who really came on as the season progressed - was totally victimized. visibly humiliated on the flea flicker but also gave up over 100y and 2 tds total. second factor was nick foles who was apparently just as good as he looked. rated as his best ever play by play performance, better even than his 7 td game vs oakland in 2013. perfect passer rating and qbr in the second half.

on offense, the vikes acknowledged their weakness - the o-line - and devised a game plan around getting the ball out quickly. this had worked for them during the regular season and as i noted before the game, keenum was also one of the best qbs in the nfl vs pressure. however, even with 3 step drops and keenum never having the ball much longer than a couple seconds, the eagles still managed to pressure him on 50% of dropbacks which is actually terrifying. the eagles front just brutally and thoroughly mauled them. they rattled keenum and didn't even give him time to loft hopeful 50/50s to thielen or diggs downfield, the cornerstone of their offense.

there were definitely other major factors, for sure the 14 points off turnovers in the first half had a massive impact on the way the game developed, but essentially this game was about the vikings being bad at what they do well, the eagles being good at what they do well, and nick foles turning into 2010 aaron rodgers.

Foals did have a great 2013 season, but it seems passer rating is losing it's significance more and more with each year. I mean, Tony Romo has essentially the same career rating as Tom Brady and I can almost guarantee you he won't be getting in the hall of fame.

well, no one is going in the HOF based on passer rating, that is certainly true. as i was saying upthread, football stats are pretty bad all round. i like the ways folks like football outsiders and PFF are building metrics that try to do things like measure passes irrespective of catches and taking account of on-field situations, but there are infinite variables and the holy grail of a stat that tidily and definitively describes qb performance is likely a fantasy. but take a bunch of different datapoints together and hopefully you see something consistent. as phil simms famously said, "data analysis in football is like a georges seurat painting"

yeah passer ratings for the legendary QBs of the 80s like Elway and Marino were pedestrian compared to today's QBs but that's because completion percentages are higher as so many offenses use screens and dump-offs whereas Elway/Marino flung the ball downfield most of the game.

Tannehill had passer ratings that were higher than Marino posted in many seasons and was hated by a large chunk of his fanbase....cos it really doesn't mean much anymore.
