I enjoyed watching a bit of Brady realizing the grass is not always greener.
It would be hilarious if the Pats end up winning it all with Cam running the ball 15-20 times a game.
Got to love Lions grasping defeat out of the jaws of victory. Just as a reminder, Matt Patricia is now 9-32-1 as Lions head coach and Jim Caldwell was fired after going 9-7 in his last season (36-28 overall).

― LaRusso Auto (Neanderthal), Sunday, 27 September 2020 19:49 (four years ago)
Falcon's keeping their club tradition of grasping defeat out of the jaws of victory. You could see it coming after the first touchdown and the second three and out. There was all sorts of guys throwing up deer in the headlights eyes on that club. What the hell you thinking trying to go deep that many times and stop the clock? This is why you get a defensive coach to run the club, offensive coaches are f-ing morans at times in their football sense.
It is also another chapter in Bears winning ugly football tradition too. Nick Foles looked like crap until the end of the game, really worse than Mitch.
― earlnash, Sunday, 27 September 2020 20:34 (four years ago)
and not stop the clock...

― LaRusso Auto (Neanderthal), Sunday, 27 September 2020 20:51 (four years ago)

*the
It's not a curse, it's dumb as a damn brick football. You got a 10 point lead with 5 minutes to go, RUN THE DAMN BALL. 3x 3 and outs and Ryan went 0-6 and if you were watching, they twice went for big homerun balls and a couple more on like 14-15 yard outs.
Bears did not even have to use ANY timeouts in this situation.
Falcons also had 3 dumb hit 15 yard penalties on defense/special teams, so while I scorch their offensive ineptitude, it really was a team effort. I guess you might say the one was a bit the guy cutting down, but Falcon DB was leading with his helmet.
Hey, i'm a Bears fans and I saw this happening and called it to my girlfriend. They definitely choked, lots of crazy 'it's happening again' on multiple players.

I was doubtful when the NBA came back, but after the first game I watched I was ecstatic. It was like a lifeline to pre-COVID life. I didn't get that feeling watching the first week of NFL. The piped-in crowd noise, pointless season-ending injuries, and boring predictability of (most of) the games have had me feeling less enthusiastic every week. Nick Foles is not accurate. Bears just need to go old skool Tom Landry or like college coaches used to do all the time and swap them out if they get cold.
They should have pulled Foles in the 4th quarter, as they were lifeless and the Colts defense was shuttering them in. I think having a bit of mobility at QB might have busted a play open.
Neither one is all that good, I don't think Foles has done any more than Mitch T. with the Bears.
― earlnash, Monday, 5 October 2020 19:56 (four years ago)
I'm looking forward to seeing the Colts play some good clubs, as they look pretty stout on both lines and have some good players on D.

they have 54 total yards and two turnovers and are up 18 at the half smh
― mookieproof, Sunday, 1 November 2020 19:50 (four years ago)
lol mostly because they've barely had to be on offense due to the two defensive-inspired TDs in a minute and a half.
Tua started shaky, with the strip-sack, but his last two throws were on the money to Preston Williams and he dropped both.
he's definitely gonna need a learning curve tho
― Lover of Nixon (or LON for short) (Neanderthal), Sunday, 1 November 2020 19:53 (four years ago)
his TD pass was perfect tho.
also Patriots down 14-6 o_O
not understanding why the Dolphins have run trick plays on consecutive drives. both led to the end of the series and Tua was doing fine in the set offense.
still up 18, but you don't wanna act like this is wrapped up already.
― Lover of Nixon (or LON for short) (Neanderthal), Sunday, 1 November 2020 20:18 (four years ago)

Miami is 4-3.
did not see that coming after the 0-2 start.
Tua didn't do much but he went from tying the game to having a 3 touchdown lead in a minute and a half, so not shocked.

I got to hand it to the Dolphins coach Flores for the turnaround. They were looking laughably bad and heading towards an all-time terrible club and pulled out and played .500 ball after like their first 4 games. Now they are seemingly in a legit chance to make the playoffs.
Cowboys D-line is so, so sad. I got to think going to a 3-4 from a 4-3 has caught them without the unmovable nose tackle so important in that scheme. The interior linemen are just getting pummeled and every running back is at the second level before they are touched. Teams will have to play down to get beat by them, which Philly was on it's way for a bit. I think the Cowboys got a couple of Dbacks and that one linebacker is a ball hawk and a 1/2. Until they get a big road grater that can fill up some space on the line to free up their linebackers, they are going to get roasted on the ground.

OMG WE WON
― Lover of Nixon (or LON for short) (Neanderthal), Monday, 9 November 2020 00:35 (four years ago)
Mike McCarthy is pretty much a moron that won because he had Aaron Rodgers and a decent defense. Cowboy's rookie QB Gilbert played a good game but the Steelers pretty much in the second half were blitzing every play, so what does offensive genius keep doing - every play all the Dallas guys are going out like 10-15 yards and his QB is getting teed off as they are clobbering him before his guys don
CHANGE MF'er - ADAPT OR DIE. Use a quick slant or a screen or get the QB moving out of the pocket - don't just run the same BS over and over and expect something to work that is obviously not doing so.
Cowboys also seemed to realize, huh we got people to run a 4-3, let's try running a 4-3 and they actually played pretty good today.
Jerrah deserves morons like this as coach.

― frogbs, Monday, 9 November 2020 02:28 (four years ago)
Btw I’m guessing nobody watched it but the Panthers put together one of the worst final drives I’ve ever seen...down 2 with 90 seconds and no timeouts, they called like 4 passes down the middle and then kicked a 67 yard field goal which was so far off it nearly hit someone in the crowd

lol this game had old Browns written in the sky. Watson drives down and makes it 10-7 with 5 minutes left. On the ensuing kickoff the Browns returner muffs it and luckily recovers it on his own 3 yard line. Perfect opportunity to go three and out and give the game back to the Texans.
The Browns then ran the ball 7 straight times and the clock did yet expire on the Texans from Houston.

the whole thing is so odd, I felt like Jameis was a great dice roll for the Saints with Brees on his last legs, he has his problems but the high end raw talent is there, he's only 26. he has the arm to run a Brees offense and I thought maybe Payton would be able to help him tighten up decision making and interceptions.

This is the worst season I can remember. Every team seems legit bad. Even the Chiefs if not for Mahomes and Hill don't seem that impressive to me. Yet, the meta stories have been really interesting. I find myself enjoying the podcasts and talk shows more entertaining than the games. I half wonder if there is going to be some kind of mass player walk-out and the season will be canceled before the playoffs. Even if nothing like that happens, in most fans' minds there's going to be a huge asterisk next to every stat from 2020.
Also, I hope the Bears fire everybody.

someone was spreading rumors that the ravens players might simply refuse to play tomorrow, which would be v. interesting
― mookieproof, Tuesday, 1 December 2020 19:30 (four years ago)
idk I'm pretty impressed by the Chiefs, they've got the one offense where you just keep throwing your hands up going "can't do anything about that". I do get what you're saying though. every year there's one utterly unconvincing team that goes 11-5 and loses by 25 in the playoffs. this year there's like 6 of them. idk what to make of the 10-0 Steelers either, I don't see why they've been so dominating this year.
― frogbs, Tuesday, 1 December 2020 20:12 (four years ago)
steelers have played an extremely weak schedule and came close to losing to several terrible teams
but i guess their defense is pretty good
― mookieproof, Tuesday, 1 December 2020 21:00 (four years ago)
yeah Chiefs are solid. their game against the Raiders proved that IMO.
― Lover of Nixon (or LON for short) (Neanderthal), Tuesday, 1 December 2020 21:07 (four years ago)
I'm not sold on the Steelers being "undefeated" good. This isn't the best Tomlin Steelers team. but in a year where you have no preseason, if you're a squad with relative continuity at coaching and in your sexy positions, and you can emerge 4-0 after the first quarter of your season, you could then play about as well as an 11-5 team from then on out (good-to-great, not amazing) and technically still be undefeated.
they will eventually lose one though.
Jets, otoh, are definitely winless level bad
― Lover of Nixon (or LON for short) (Neanderthal), Tuesday, 1 December 2020 21:09 (four years ago)
I'll stan for my Dolphins, though. Our last two playoff teams, one of them was purely due to a gimmick (the wildcat offense who protected the football well), and 2016, I can't even tell you how that team made the playoffs other than the sheer will of Ryan Tannehill and a few skill positions.
this year, it's the defense. they're ball hawks, they generate good pressure, they cover downfield well, and really it's just the linebackers who are the weak link (and even there, Van Noy and Van Ginkel are good, they just struggle with coverage across middle of the field).
― Lover of Nixon (or LON for short) (Neanderthal), Tuesday, 1 December 2020 21:11 (four years ago)
That game left me with the opposite impression. The Raiders aren't good.
― beard papa, Tuesday, 1 December 2020 21:54 (four years ago)
the Raiders aren't a contender but how you perform under duress says a lot about one's team.
― Lover of Nixon (or LON for short) (Neanderthal), Tuesday, 1 December 2020 21:55 (four years ago)
I just feel like they shouldn't have been under duress in the first place. Did you see the Raiders yesterday?
― beard papa, Tuesday, 1 December 2020 21:57 (four years ago)
The Steelers also seem like the same team they are every year, just that everybody else is less good than they have been.
Great teams occasionally trailing lesser teams on the road is a thing that happens, and AFC West matches are often competitive. Raiders have also beaten the Chiefs once this year and the Saints, they're just woefully inconsistent is all.

Can't fire the McCaskey family and that is and will continue to be why the Bears are so f'n weirdly run as a team. That history, they SHOULD be the Packers or the Steelers but they are not as sadly Papa's family just does not have the touch running the club.

a win today and they're 8-4.
would be hilarious if the Jets beat the Raiders today.
Browns-Titans is really the only interesting matchup despite Rams-Cards and Bills-49ers really.

complete joke officiating in the Miami-Browns game. shoving match out of bounds between a Bengal and a Dolphin. both Boyd and Howard ejected. Neither should have been ejected. they weren't punches, they were shoves.
it helped us temporarily but no Howard is gonna hurt. lucky for us, no Boyd for them.

Thomas on the Bengals apparently doesn't know the kick-catch interference rule, as he's hit Jakeem Grant twice before the ball came in. the latter just provoked both benches emptying and sparked a fight. MLB style.

assuming mass ejections, possible suspensions after. this fucking sucks.
Davante Parker ejected for throwing punches (these were legit punches, no arguing that).
Mack Hollins (WR) as well, so that puts Miami down two WRs
― Lover of Nixon (or LON for short) (Neanderthal), Sunday, 6 December 2020 20:59 (four years ago)

― Lover of Nixon (or LON for short) (Neanderthal), Sunday, 6 December 2020 21:16 (four years ago)
lol the Jets were playing single coverage on the guy who caught a 50 yard TD with 11 second left in the game. Like, no help within 20 yards of the receiver. Nobody playing "centerfield" near the end zone just in case the Raiders are trying to win the game.
― a certain derecho (brownie), Sunday, 6 December 2020 22:17 (four years ago)
Just checked the replay. The Jets had 8 guys near the line of scrimmage when the ball was thrown. There were 11 seconds left and the Raiders needed a TD to win. Fascinating.

lol at the ease of that Packers TD. missed delay call but w/e
basically if Philly's front 4 don't get to you, you can pretty much find anything over the middle of the field
― Lover of Nixon (or LON for short) (Neanderthal), Sunday, 6 December 2020 22:33 (four years ago)
it feels like Packers receivers are drifting across the middle and Philly's zone coverage is shitty enough to where nobody picks up the guy and he sits out there wide open
Wentz is also playing like a rookie

― frogbs, Monday, 7 December 2020 05:30 (four years ago)
why would you go through the trouble of being competitive and taking the lead with 11 seconds left only to go "lol jk", though? Like, if you wanna tank without plausible deniability....you pretty much can in the NFL.
― Lover of Nixon (or LON for short) (Neanderthal), Monday, 7 December 2020 05:39 (four years ago)
unless it was "oh shit, Jacksonville blew their game"

― frogbs, Monday, 7 December 2020 06:01 (four years ago)
they pretty much had won the game though! I feel like if ownership had sent it down to 'give up', Gregg could have dialed up much shittier defensive class on downs 1-3.
idgaf if they were tanking tbh, the amount of people calling for investigations is pretty hilarious - cos are they gonna go back in time and penalize every other team that did it (including my own, last year)?. i just think coaches coulda guaranteed a loss much earlier than 0:11 remaining.
― Lover of Nixon (or LON for short) (Neanderthal), Monday, 7 December 2020 06:07 (four years ago)

Bryant had taken the field for pregame warm-ups despite the fact that, per league protocols, his two inconclusive tests should have been treated as if they were positive, and he should have been "subject to the other requirements and procedures of a positive test."A source told ESPN that Bryant was already on the field by the time the league found out the results of his tests were inconclusive. The NFL and NFLPA are not worried about close contacts with Bryant, sources told ESPN, because the Ravens have been operating under exceedingly strict protocols for the past two weeks, effectively eliminating the possibility of close contacts.Bryant was not wearing a face covering at all times.

yeah he was not humble enough for Kevin's liking
Did anybody see Kap’s interview after his workout? Is it just me, but did it sound like he was barking and calling out the NFL Owners as well as Roger Goodell? Wow. Kinda thought he would be a bit humble and contrite. Guess I thought wrong on that one. #whybitethehandthatcanfeedU— Kevin Greene (@sackmaster91) November 17, 2019

honestly not sure whether it's ben's fault or an offense that cannot run and is predicated on four-yard passes
like, are they building the offense around ben's inability to throw down the field or the receivers' inability to get open/catch the ball down the field?
yes you can fp me for saying 'down the field'

I don't understand how the Raiders imploded.
I told my mother, jokingly, that our best hope was a tossup that resulted in PI. But so much had to go wrong on that play. Like....
Obviously you don't wanna give up a big play with Sanders's golden leg, but they needed 40 yards just to reach the peak of his range. And if you rush 3 and drop 8, Miami's receivers are so mediocre without Devante Parker, it's unlikely, and if it happens, it's likely gonna be in the middle of the field with 12 seconds or less. Spike happens with 5 seconds and it's a low percentage chance.
Somehow managed to simultaneously blow coverage and leave a WR open ON THE SIDELINE and facemask the QB.

Depending on if Alex Smith can really take another season (hint you probably should seriously think about retiring), I'd say Heinecke definitely earned him a shot at least a season of paychecks as the WTF Hatcats as their backup QB.
Washington should just stay totally Seinfeld and should officially change the name to Washington Team Football. It's anti-logo and kinda genius in a way.
― earlnash, Sunday, 10 January 2021 17:39 (four years ago)
I don't have a lot of fandom in this playoffs as the Bears got in the back door and probably don't deserve to be there. I could believe it possible they could upset the Saints if for nothing else for the almighty to punish Bears fans once again watching Aaron Rodgers toy with their emotions.
That said, if I had to pick a team I would be OK with them winning it all, I would go Titans. Why? Derrick Henry is a mf'ing beast and bad a$$ running back is way cooler than elite QB.

yeah looking at their scores now and noting that they won a lot of close ones, still going from 11-0 to here is wild

― lag∞n, Monday, 11 January 2021 04:06 (four years ago)
I was somewhat worried in the first quarter cos when you're the underdog and get off to a ridiculously huge lead in a very short duration can often be a psychological strain; the anxiety of defending a lead for a lengthy period of time sometimes get teams out of what they do well, or to overreact to a few negative plays.
glad to see Mayfield added two TDs after they went up 28-0.

― johnny crunch, Monday, 11 January 2021 13:54 (four years ago)

lol wow yeah wonder if anyones ever put up those numbers before
― lag∞n, Monday, 11 January 2021 15:18 (four years ago)
it's an NFL record for completions in a game, beating a record Drew Bledsoe held for 26 years
feel like there was another Big Ben game like this, where he started out like 1/9 with 2 picks and a fumble and then threw for like 600 yards
― frogbs, Monday, 11 January 2021 15:25 (four years ago)
thats effing crazy to throw 4 picks and still get the completions record
― lag∞n, Monday, 11 January 2021 16:04 (four years ago)
jesus, 47 for 68 sounds like a high for attempts/completion percentage in basically any professional sport; would hate to be Ben's orthopedist.
― the serious avant-garde universalist right now (forksclovetofu), Monday, 11 January 2021 16:05 (four years ago)
that's what's funny about QB stats, he got the completions record *because* he threw 4 picks and left the Steelers with no option but to chuck it on every down. this is like all those years where Matt Stafford would rack up 5,000+ yards for a 6-10 Lions team.
― frogbs, Monday, 11 January 2021 16:17 (four years ago)
yeah but youre also depriving yourself of possessions, tho i guess if you threw the picks down by the goal line then it wld set up the perfect conditions
― lag∞n, Monday, 11 January 2021 16:19 (four years ago)
true, I guess you can't overlook the fact that the Browns had seven drives that lasted less than 90 seconds
there were 26 total possessions that game. I wonder if that's close to a playoff record as well.
― frogbs, Monday, 11 January 2021 16:24 (four years ago)
yeah that game was moving fast especially in the 4th
― lag∞n, Monday, 11 January 2021 16:35 (four years ago)
Mouthbreathers on ESPN radio were talking about how Tomlin got 'out-coached' by the Browns.
Sure...I'm sure the plan was to put the first over Big Ben's big head and give a TD to Cleveland. That stretch of football was like something out of some old 60s Disney movie where some magic cat flicks it's tail and changes things so the home team can win action with Kurt Russell on the sideline with Mr. Ed to come in and kick the extra point.
― earlnash, Friday, 15 January 2021 03:51 (four years ago)
right and they still were able to put the game in reach, I'd say the coaching was fine outside of that atrocious punt in the 4th
― frogbs, Friday, 15 January 2021 03:54 (four years ago)
What is with the media’s constant “Lamar FINALLY won a playoff game” bullshit? He was 0-2, not 0-10.

I'm just pissed off because pretty much all my worst fears about this game came true, all the fucking 3rd and longs they got, the last second TD, the fumble, all the moments of hope in the 2nd half allowing me to get my soul crushed TWICE, then everything coming down to questionable reffing allowing MAGA Brady to go to another fucking Super Bowl
― frogbs, Sunday, 24 January 2021 23:29 (four years ago)
actually I guess the game going to OT, Brady winning the flip and connecting with Gronk on a 3rd and 15 was kinda how I pictured this going

― lag∞n, Monday, 25 January 2021 00:49 (four years ago)
Ok here’s what I think his reasoning was
You score the TD, you still have to make 2 point conversion, stop Brady on the other side, then win in OT, each of which are 50/50 propositions
By kicking the FG you have to get a 3-and-out then go all out for the TD, and you win without having to worry about a 2pt conversion or overtime. Their defense had been stopping the run all day & Brady probably ain’t taking many risks on offense in that situation. And the Packers can definitely go 80 yards in 90 seconds even without a TO.
Still think it was the wrong decision but it’s not like an all time bad decision the way some people on Twitter are claiming
― frogbs, Monday, 25 January 2021 00:57 (four years ago)

Why the fuck would the Texans even think about trading Deshaun Watson, a top-ten QB with four years left on his deal?? They’d have to get like eight first-round picks to make it worth it. I don’t care how unhappy he is, he’s not sitting out the next four seasons, come the fuck on.

for a 32 year old QB, which isn't exactly ancient or even approximating it for the QB position buuuuut....you're still on the back half of your career.
Poor Goff. maybe he'll retire.
― if Spaghetti-Os had whammy bars (Neanderthal), Sunday, 31 January 2021 03:18 (four years ago)
I mean fuck it, it's the NFL, it's not irrational for them to think they are close, you don't get a lot of shots to get a QB of that caliber
― Blues Guitar Solo Heatmap (Free Download) (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Sunday, 31 January 2021 03:27 (four years ago)
it's just that they were literally in the Super Bowl two years ago!
Goff hasn't been *quite* the same QB since, but he's still solid, and even Stafford had some lean years (like 2012). is this going to be the thing that propels them? idk...this year, Goff breaking his thumb in Week 16 hurt the QB stability which definitely affected them in the playoffs, and they still got to the division round!
idk if giving up that much for him is wise.

hope it works out, always wanted to see Stafford on a decent team, but still yikes for the Rams hitching their future to a 32-year old who's gotten hit 5,000 times

the Staff also gets to pad his stats when his team is losing in garbage time a lot. granted, he also took the Lions to the playoffs for the first times in years, so I'm not knocking him, but Goff had a Top 3 QB season in 2018.
i kinda feel like this article here tbh: https://www.ocregister.com/2021/01/30/jared-goff-and-the-rams-did-he-change-or-did-they/

now, Goff in Detroit, I think that's gonna suck, but I figure they're not committing to him for the long haul
stafford will be good for the rams for a couple seasons, which is what they’re getting him for.
also think stafford is 10-12 mil cheaper per year than goff so they should be able to grab an extra free agent or two

― frogbs, Monday, 8 February 2021 01:01 (four years ago)
Football and basketball have the same issue, there are things that could be called fouls on every 2nd or 3rd play, and it’s up to the refs judgment cuz obviously they can’t call everything which bakes a lot of luck into the game, just sucks way more in the NFL because one ticktack call can change the entire game

Because visiting our daughter on Sunday afternoons has been one of the major priorities of my life for more than a couple of decades now, I've missed watching almost every Superbowl in that period. After each, reading about them in the sports section, I have missed very few nail-biters. A few were close, but they're mostly non-events after three quarters or less.
Due to the pandemic, our visits withe our daughter are sharply curtailed this year, including today. Consequently, I got home today during halftime. Since halftime I have watched a total of five minutes of game play. This Super Bowl has regressed to the mean.

idk these arguments are weird when it comes to football cuz to me Mahomes was clearly the better QB, as was Rodgers the game before, but the Bucs made it so much easier on Brady, he was mostly hitting short throws from the pocket, which even say Mitch Trubisky could do. you don't see stuff like that in the NBA, where you usually live and die by your best guy.

― frogbs, Monday, 8 February 2021 15:20 (four years ago)

I wasn't at all proposing Brady as the greatest athlete ever, more wondering if he's the greatest team-sport player ever. I thought about this after I posted last night, and I think it's something you could measure, but it would involve, at a minimum, four variables:
1) The relative importance of a player's position to the success of the team (e.g., a quarterback vs. a center in basketball vs. a goalie in hockey, etc.).
2) The relative strength of a player's teammates (LeBron James seems like the guy able to accomplish the most with the least).
3) The relative difficulty of winning the championship in various team sports (as measured by repeat winners, number of league teams, length of playoffs, etc.).
4) The relative quality of competition during an athlete's career. (Russell had to contend with Wilt Chamberlain; I know just enough about football to know that Brady's career overlaps with the Mannings, Aaron Rodgers, etc.)
I think there are ways to measure all those things. But obviously, extremely complicated.
― clemenza, Monday, 8 February 2021 16:24 (four years ago)
Mahomes was terrible in this game — holding on to the ball for far too long, trying to make plays. But yeah, the narrative is all about how the O line let him down. Being a great QB isn't about arm strength or how well you throw on the run, it's about playing smart and reading defenses. That's why TB12 is the GOAT. And Brady could have thrown for a lot more yards, but there was no need after the first half. Run the ball and kill the clock.
― TO BE A JAZZ SINGER YOU HAVE TO BE ABLE TO SCAT (Jazzbo), Monday, 8 February 2021 16:32 (four years ago)
well i mean holding the ball and making plays is sort of the patrick mahomes value proposition. due to a handful of factors it did not work in this particular contest.

also worth mentioning that variance plays a huge role here. football is a uniquely swingy game with a single-elimination playoff structure, which is huge given how reffing works, when a hold on the opposite side that's called maybe 20% of the time can nullify a game-changing interception. obviously Brady has gotten a ton of these calls in his favor, not just the last 2 games but basically his entire career - wasn't there a study 5 years ago concluding that the Patriots got overwhelmingly favorable calls in the playoffs? then you add in the fact that his opponents have literally never touched the ball in playoff overtime games, the cakewalk schedule he was gifted from playing in the AFC East for 20 years which pretty much guaranteed him a first-round bye every year, etc. how much bad luck has Brady really had to deal with in his career? the helmet catch and then the leg injury in 2008, what else? it's unreal.
that's what makes it so hard to evaluate, Brady obviously an all-time great and he's been on a contender nearly every year but idk if you'll ever see the stars align so perfectly for a player like that ever again. the Colts, Packers, and Steelers had some great teams that lasted years, but they couldn't avoid untimely injuries, game-swinging calls, and odd shit like bungled onside kicks & the randomness of fumbles
― frogbs, Monday, 8 February 2021 16:46 (four years ago)
kind of curious where you think he should've gone with the ball, not only was his OL comically overmatched but his receivers were not making the plays they usually do. he didn't exactly have a checkdown option on any of those crazy scrambles. if the roles were reversed Brady would've been sacked 15 times.
― frogbs, Monday, 8 February 2021 16:49 (four years ago)
patriots had a lot of swingy things go against them too, recall the helmet catch, a famously uncalled pass interference etc, i mean they lost 3 superbowls they lost a bunch of playoff games, thats somewhat obscured by the fact they went 12-4 for 20 years, basically they just had a lot of shots at it, which makes the playing in a weak division point a little more salient, tho on the other hand the fact that they lost to the dolphins once every year balances that out somewhat xp
― lag∞n, Monday, 8 February 2021 16:52 (four years ago)
those other teams that put together long runs in the end just didnt do it for nearly as long or as consistent as the pats
― lag∞n, Monday, 8 February 2021 16:55 (four years ago)
ALSO one often overlooked way in which brady helped them win was accepting less than market value contracts, some of those colts teams mightve looked a little different if peyton did the same
― lag∞n, Monday, 8 February 2021 16:56 (four years ago)
"holding onto the ball too long" a weird complaint when you could physically see defensive ends and linebackers in the backfield immediately after snap.
Mahomes was pressured the most times in SB history (29 times in 56 dropbacks). Brady was pressured 4 times in 30 dropbacks.
Not sure why you're ignoring that not so insignificant difference.
Nevermind the number of drops by Chiefs receivers and TEs
― he said that you son of a bitch (Neanderthal), Monday, 8 February 2021 17:06 (four years ago)
There was at least one sack where the LB was in the backfield so fast Mahomes couldn't even scramble because he was being wrapped up almost immediately

― lag∞n, Monday, 8 February 2021 17:08 (four years ago)
Brady was absolutely mauled in Super Bowl XLII, and the Giants' defense basically shut down the Patriots. Still, he managed to put his team ahead late with a TD pass, before that crazy helmet catch. Mahomes is supposedly the best QB in the league and his team is an offensive juggernaut, yet he didn't score a single point in the biggest game of the year, throwing two picks and getting sacked three times. He had an awful game no matter which way you slice it, is all I'm saying. I expect he'll learn a lot from this game and play even better going forward.
― TO BE A JAZZ SINGER YOU HAVE TO BE ABLE TO SCAT (Jazzbo), Monday, 8 February 2021 17:08 (four years ago)
Mahomes didn't forget how to QB. The Bucs just solved him and the Chief offense with their schemes
Xpost yep it looked bad early on when Mahomes kept having to take off. Bucs not spying often so having another guy in coverage.
He was getting first downs a lot early on the run but the drives were stalling out.

helmet catch game and this one were similar in that the only way to stop a great quarterback at the height of their powers is to get a consistent rush with your front 4
― lag∞n, Monday, 8 February 2021 17:16 (four years ago)
pats also had injuries to their O line that game
i mean they lost 3 superbowls they lost a bunch of playoff games
true, it's pretty incredible that all three of those SB losses could've turned on a single play...but still. Brady's won 76% of his playoff games, which is fucking nuts given that he had the first-round bye so often and therefore couldn't rack up wins against 9-7 teams that limped in. the Pats were very good, probably the best team in the league at least 5 of those years, but that's still pretty fortunate
― frogbs, Monday, 8 February 2021 17:17 (four years ago)

funny factoid about the brady era is the one year they missed the playoffs was when brady blew out his knee in the first game of the season (also the first game after the helmet catch, rough stretch for a pats fan lol), but they went 10-6 that year! i think one of only two teams ever to miss the offs with double digi wins, in conclusion maybe tom brady is just fundamentally lucky

there's bigger picture stuff too, their defense aged out and they sucked on that side from like 2008-2012 while they rebuilt it. they were lacking at the skill positions for various portions of the brady years (2005/6, 2017-2019). outside of the year plus with randy moss the only skill position guy he played with who was considered top 10 in the league was gronk.
the division thing is salient for homefield advantage but i don't think the byes did much, the hallmark of the whole era was that they didn't lose playoff games within the AFC to inferior teams. you typically needed a dominant defense and a good-enough offense to beat them and most of the teams that beat them (jets, ravens, bronos in those years) were straight-up better.
― call all destroyer, Monday, 8 February 2021 18:44 (four years ago)
the year the jets beat them in the playoffs, the pats were probably the better team, but rex ryan game-planned the hell out of that game. the jets were notoriously devoted to man coverage and blitzing all year round and in that playoff game they went full zone and blitzed only occasionally. completely threw brady off his game.
not totally germane to what we're talking about but as a jets fan, that's really all i have in terms of "recent" positive football memories lol
― tiwa-nty one savage (voodoo chili), Monday, 8 February 2021 18:47 (four years ago)
anyway, "count the rings" culture is a disease, it's silly to talk about the "legacy" of a 25-year-old guy who's redefined what's possible from the qb position, and a guy who if he had won yesterday would've been the first qb to ever win 2 super bowls by 25.
― tiwa-nty one savage (voodoo chili), Monday, 8 February 2021 18:48 (four years ago)
it's very unlikely that mahomes will win 7 super bowls, but he totally could. he's lost something like 5 games total as a starter.

It's a simple question but a difficult answer. Is @TomBrady the greatest athlete of all time?
What's so difficult about "no way, no how, gtfo"?
The reason this shit is so over-hyped is because the NFL is a multi-billion dollar business with deep connections to dozens of Fortune 500 companies, making it the most profitable sports league in human history. Money and hype walk hand in hand.

BTW they refer to Brady as the "losing quarterback" in that super bowl and he had the worst game of his seasonI'm well aware. My point is he still scored points, unlike Mahomes last night. In both losing efforts against the Giants in the SB, Brady led his team to late leads before the defense let him down. Mahomes didn't do shit last night. Here's his line on 20+ yard throws: 0-6 with an interception. Lots of QBs are pressured. The great ones find ways to deal with it. But hey, those two incomplete passes on scrambling plays were pretty cool.

and 2 bounced off a receiver's face mask
Brady definitely had to scramble a bunch vs. the Giants but what Mahomes was facing last night was in a totally different league. I don't think a single QB in NFL history could've put up good numbers against a rush like that.
― frogbs, Monday, 8 February 2021 19:21 (four years ago)
not saying you're wrong necessarily just that I, personally, did not see a whole lot of plays where Mahomes had anywhere to go with the ball, and that he did in fact "deal with it" by making some insane plays that, alas, his receivers dropped the ball on
― frogbs, Monday, 8 February 2021 19:23 (four years ago)
Lots of QBs are pressured.
Sure, but literally nobody as often as Mahomes. That's what "record" means.
idk why you keep bringing up that Brady performance. He lost, got sacked five times, and the 17 points they scored were 19 less than their season average of 36/game.
So he managed to help his team score 8 more points than Mahomes. He was solved and had a ineffective game.
He was banged up (as was Mahomes) but he faced a fraction of what Mahomes did and was shut down.
Giants almost lost mostly cos their offense was sputtering too

Because he still contributed on offense even though his O line got stomped on. It shouldn't be a difficult point to grasp. I could have picked any number of big games in which Brady WON despite facing a lot of pressure (SB 49 is just one example), but that wouldn't have been as sporting. But go ahead and tell me how well Patrick Mahomes actually played last night, despite what my eyes told me. Maybe I missed something. Or are you saying he's not to blame AT ALL for his team's failure to get into the end zone all night?
― TO BE A JAZZ SINGER YOU HAVE TO BE ABLE TO SCAT (Jazzbo), Monday, 8 February 2021 19:59 (four years ago)

Why should I continue, you're just repeating the same shit as if it should be immediately obvious to everybody as an incontrovertible fact.
Brady "contributed" exactly one more touchdown pass than Mahomes. He was shut down. They lost. It isn't making a point that supports your argument.
Obviously I'm not saying Mahomes bears NO blame, but you aren't willing to accept the offensive line had any blame and laughed it off as if Mahomes merely forgot how to play QB all of a sudden.
Which tbh is a pretty big insult to what TB did on defense

Please point out where I said that. I'll wait. Mahomes' sucktitude and the weakness of the Chiefs' O line aren't mutually exclusive, you know. He knows he played poorly. "I'm going to look at the film and try to find ways to get better," he said after the game. And he will. He's a great quarterback and competitor who should, barring injuries, win several rings. Just don't tell me there's no way he could have played well last night due to the Chiefs' O line, Tampa's defense, the referee's calls or whatever. That's a loser's attitude.

yeah it's not like they're a franchise known for having untalented QBs...

Vincent Jackson was a beast to try and tackle, he was like an prototype of those big fullback/TE like wideouts. Little 195 pound corners trying to cover that dude on a jump ball or bring down in the open field creating mismatches. Bucs' Mike Evans is also that type of wide out.

I can't think of Wentz being more talented than f'n Donvan McNabb let alone Randall Cunningham.
McNabb really screwed up his legacy as people totally bag on him all the time, that dude was freaking awesome early on in his career and with Jim Johnson's defense made the Eagles a killer team for nearly a decade.

cunningham as far as talent obvs in a tier of his own, macnabb was a very good to great quarterback but more on the high end of realized talent rather than being exceptionally talented

Well, we now know why the NFL made the Broncos play a game with no Quarterback. https://t.co/PEMVIKHfxB pic.twitter.com/eO0YxPInb5— Will McAvoy (@WillMcAvoyACN) September 7, 2021
