ty earlnash for the new thread
I agree that following the NFL is frivolous, but no more so than following the MCU, streaming TV series, pop music, the poetry scene, or almost anything else featured on SNA right now
I'd enjoy seeing ILX's foobaw board maintain a little parity with the much-more-active MLB and hoops boards (not to mention the alarums and excursions on boards related to strange foreign sports)
so NFL schadenfreude yes please
don't get me started on the college game right now; I'm really not looking forward to 93,000 people from all over Georgia packing into Sanford Stadium this weekend with no mask or vaccine requirements

I guess it was a good game. I did as I often do and love about football, there was a kickoff and I zonked in the chair asleep and did not wake up until nearly 4 am.
Think it was much more fun to hate on the 'Boys when Romopaws was the QB, as I kinda like Dak and forever glad that his contract has finally been signed so ESPN radio can shut up about it (even though they STILL talk about it now in light of the injury).
That said, I think most ILNFL would agree that Romodamus is pretty fun in the announcing booth.
I think Drew Brees dyed his hair. That looked like a serious Grecian Formula job in the pregame.

its amazing with all the turnover in this league how some things always stay the same: Tom Brady always gets gifted a game-changing call (or no-call in this case) in crunch time, the Dallas Cowboys always find new ways to lose in the most excruciating way possible

for those of you not watching the Raiders just threw what looked like a game winning TD in overtime - players were already shaking hands at midfield - but it turned out to be like 18 inches short. they run it to the 3 inch line or whatever on 1st down, then commit a false start (LOL) then on 3rd down it slips through a receivers hands and doinks off someone's helmet and now the Ravens are going for the win

one of my favorite things about the NFL is how frequently bizarre shit like that happens. its the natural outgrowth of a high-variance sport with dozens of nebulously defined rules. every week these guys come out and risk career-ending injury and it's all for naught because a guy jumped a tenth of a second early. i love it

that noncall on the illegal hit to the helmet on Adams was a travesty
― Blues Guitar Solo Heatmap (Free Download) (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Monday, 27 September 2021 14:02 (three years ago)
they also missed a really blatant intentional grounding before the end of the half, gave them a late hit on 3rd-and-10 even though Jimmy G released the ball like a tenth of a second before getting hit and the defender tried to let up anyway, and I thought LaFleur's challenge should've been successful given the ground clearly aided the catch. all 3 of those calls led to 49ers TDs. then the Adams non-call right after which was a big "why do I still watch this dumb sport" moment
― frogbs, Monday, 27 September 2021 14:14 (three years ago)
Chicago will never learn that you can be a contender in the NFL with a good offensive line. My whole history as a Bears fan has been watching quarterbacks running for their lives, grappling with injuries, and ending up with Jay Cutler face. Fans whine about being unlucky with QBs, but plenty of decent QBs have rolled through and gone through this same pattern. They ruin quarterbacks there.
The refereeing in the game last night was awful, almost game ruining for me. There were also some plays in that Bears Browns game that went in the favor of the Bears that had me going "Whaaatt?" That game probably should have been a shutout.
― beard papa, Monday, 27 September 2021 16:32 (three years ago)
lmao the ref ltierally went over to McCarthy to ask him if he seriously wasn't going to use a timeout there
― frogbs, Tuesday, 28 September 2021 01:50 (three years ago)
Finally saw the clip of Justin Tucker's 66 yarder...what a bomb. That record might stick for a bit, Tom Dempsey's 63 yard kick hung around till 2013.
Bears got a problem in that the McCaskey's run the club like a family owned car wash.
― earlnash, Tuesday, 28 September 2021 23:25 (three years ago)
Watched most of the second half of the Bengals and Jags. Pretty entertaining game and you never know in about ten years, it might be known as the first time Burrell and Lawrence met in the pros. Both of them looked really good, Lawrence can really run quite well for his size.
Watching the post-game interviews they both came off as good corporate CEOs of 'the product' well groomed in mike speak.
Local news stations around here do a pretty good job covering local high school football and it always cracks me up when they put the mike in front of these players often times you get these kids doing their version of the ESPN mike speak. And really, they are better groomed than yo would think.
Burrell and Lawrence both in their interviews are the next step beyond of that corpspeak...sounding near like tech CEOs in how their new software launched. All Lawrence needed was a turtleneck...defending how their work had been good but it had not yet come together.
― earlnash, Friday, 1 October 2021 14:09 (three years ago)
I like Lawrence because he's got a good quarterback face...he's got some odd features and kind of looks like a caricature but is also fairly handsome. almost reminds me of Joe Namath. that's how QBs should look. and why I've always liked Manning more than Brady

― frogbs, Monday, 4 October 2021 02:31 (three years ago)
ben is averaging like two yards per pass
part of it is that his line sucks and that's all the time he has, part of it is that he can no longer scramble for the extra time, and part of it is that he simply can't throw the ball very far. coming into this game i don't think he'd even *thrown* a pass 20 yards upfield between the hashmarks, let alone completed one

― frogbs, Monday, 4 October 2021 03:42 (three years ago)
mac was dealing! youre gonna get like at least 6 more yards if you get it probably more
― lag∞n, Monday, 4 October 2021 03:44 (three years ago)
it was just a very long field goal for such poor conditions, if it hadnt started raining again sure kick it
oh actually I forgot there was still a minute on the clock and TB had two timeouts, the 35-40% shot of a Brady comeback definitely makes going for it correct
― frogbs, Monday, 4 October 2021 03:45 (three years ago)

Unless there's been some heavy duty conference realignment I didn't hear about i don't think this is true. AFC North is at the very least a solid to good division

― Blues Guitar Solo Heatmap (Free Download) (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Monday, 4 October 2021 13:22 (three years ago)
I think they're referring to how each year, everybody in your division plays all of the teams in another division in the opposite conference. everybody in the AFC North played all of the teams in the NFC East.
But that's not really a good argument - only 3 of those first 11 wins came against the NFC East (Washington was their first loss), and they had to beat multiple playoff teams to start 11-0, including the Titans, Browns, and Ravens (who they beat twice).
I do think 11-0 was a mirage but mostly because they were beneficiaries of good fortune, not that they weren't good. they probably shoulda been 9-2.

Ahhh I didn't get the context
― Blues Guitar Solo Heatmap (Free Download) (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Monday, 4 October 2021 14:46 (three years ago)
its crazy that Cousins will look like a Top 5 QB and then have a game where he can't beat the dude overthrowing all his receivers by 10 yards
still they probably should be 3-1 and are clearly at least the 2nd best team the division so I wouldn't panic yet
― frogbs, Monday, 4 October 2021 15:05 (three years ago)
i've given up on having expectations for Miami. when they're supposed to be good, they find creative ways to soil their pants. then once you give up, suddenly they go on a crazy run and make the playoffs (or come close).
yesterday they were the dominant team in the Colts game (despite only being up 3-0) and one mental error (an offsides nullifying a stop on 4th down) lead to a snowball effect where the Colts ran roughshod over us the rest of the game.

Vikings do seem to be stung with the ability to grasp defeat out of the jaws of victory in some pretty interesting ways. They rarely flat out stink, but they seem to be just terrible in close games and lose them in odd ways.
Urban Meyer will have a nervous breakdown before they get any good in JVille. That dude is just wired up a bit too tight.

Roffelsburger is cooked. Dude is about as mobile as Bernie Kosar and his arm while not as bad as Manning or Brees were at the end is just not the same. That said, I think the real problem is their O-line pretty much stinks now.

yeah but you can't punt past the line of scrimmage which I think he clearly was
― frogbs, Friday, 8 October 2021 02:51 (three years ago)
You can punt any time. You can even punt, run downfield, pick it up and regain possession. It's just that no one does any more. Used to be called the "quick kick" and the QB was the surprise punter. The domination of the forward pass play made that trick obsolete.

this is really great news:
The NFL has found no other current team or league personnel to have sent emails containing racist, anti-gay or misogynistic language similar to messages written by Jon Gruden that led to his resignation as Las Vegas Raiders coach, a person familiar with the documents told The Associated Press on Friday.
The person said the league "did not identify other areas and other individuals it has to contact at club leadership or league leadership levels." The person spoke on condition of anonymity because the league has not publicly released what is in the 650,000 emails the independent investigators collected during an investigation of sexual harassment and other workplace conditions at the Washington Football Team.
"The NFL did not identify any problems anywhere near what you saw with Jon Gruden," the person said.

45-18
Papa Bear Halas is pissed in whatever realm he ended up in the afterlife and Curly Lambeau is laughing his a$$ off.
All time record between the Bears and Packers is now
95 wins Chicago 102 wins GB
God that sucks so bad. I really don't give a shit but the Bears need to get a real QB and coach and fix this BS.

Miami's handling of Tua has been abysmal and Stephen Ross is a disgrace of an owner. and if we trade Tua and we get DeShaun Watson, I am done.
even ignoring the football stupidity of it (you know he's going on the exempt list as soon as anybody *tries* to play him, and the defense and offensive line will still suck and lose us games), yes, let's trade for the guy who has had 20+ women come forward with accusations of sexual impropriety. that's a good message to send to your female fanbase.

Always had a bad gut feeling on Tua as an NFL qb
― Blues Guitar Solo Heatmap (Free Download) (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Thursday, 21 October 2021 16:14 (three years ago)
thing is I don't think he's played badly at all. this year he's played in two full games, and only lasted a series and a half against Buffalo before being knocked out with injury. his numbers weren't spectacular vs New England, but it was enough to win, and he was moving the ball at will against Jax (only real big misstep was the late game INT).
but i'd rather have Akili Smith playing then let Watson on my team considering what he's accused of currently :/
― Gardyloominati (Neanderthal), Thursday, 21 October 2021 18:02 (three years ago)
I cannot believe anyone should be stupid enough to trade for Watson considering the circumstances. I don't think even Snyder is that f'n dumb, but these are NFL owners and they seem to be general scum on the top end of the equation.

Remember when the Panthers were 3-0? Lose to the Giants, WTF...?
It's just a matter of time until Nagy gets fired and I kinda did not like that dude going in, but I got a feeling Fields is what he is and that is a good college QB. I'll be really surprised if he gets all that much better even if they do get the O-line fixed. I wasn't sold when they drafted him and so far, he looks pretty much lost to me.
Burrow has some really nice touch, he's a very accurate passer.

Got to admit I paused that one and took a couple of minutes looking at the names. Took me awhile to find Bernie Kosar but he was in there. It is a hilarious list of names for old school football fans.
You got a mix of eras of football with some serious old school guys like Steve DeBurg, Tommy Kramer and Steve Grogan. Trying to figure out who the 'newest' player in the yard might be. I kept hoping that Peyton Manning or Drew Brees or Tommy GOAT were in there as they overlapped a bit with Bruce but I did not see them. I guess the newest school would be Sexy Rexy Grossman or Matt Hasselbeck.
And of course David Carr is in there, dude was sacked like 200 times his first couple years in the league.

Cards weren't going to win them all. Losing Watt hurts, but it was only a matter of time. If they stay relatively healthy, they'll have a shot. The offense has so many weapons and the defense is really strong as well. Playmakers everywhere.
― Hannibal Lecture (PBKR), Friday, 29 October 2021 11:07 (three years ago)
They probably would’ve won if AJ Green turned his head around. That said taking the TD off the board was just weird, may have been the “correct” call but idk if it’s one I’ve actually seen them make before. Didn’t look like there was any good angle on it but I guess they found one. Crazy the Cards made so many awesome plays on that drive (including miraculously avoiding a safety) only to lose it like that, such a weird sport sometimes

This Vikings team is so frustrating they just can't close
Looked up the terms of the Stafford trade cuz I couldn't remember
2 1sts1 3rdGoff
That might be one of the best trades in history if Stafford keeps it up, which there's no reason to believe he won't
― Blues Guitar Solo Heatmap (Free Download) (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Monday, 1 November 2021 18:20 (three years ago)
God the Vikings could have matched that easily but with a better QB
― Blues Guitar Solo Heatmap (Free Download) (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Monday, 1 November 2021 18:23 (three years ago)
Cousins is definitely at that frustrating level where he's mediocre most of the time but will put up like 400 yards & 3 TDs against a division rival once or twice a season, I can kinda see why the Vikings haven't moved on...yet
fun stat about last night's game - on 8 3rd downs in a row the Vikings ran a pass play in which Cousins did not throw past the first down line
really just an incredible loss for Minnesota, you were at home during primetime vs. Dallas's not very good backup QB, the refs were giving you tons of tick tack calls, you got two turnovers in crucial spots, and it's basically a must-win game...they had so many chances to do ~something~
― frogbs, Monday, 1 November 2021 18:35 (three years ago)
yeah i definitely wasn't on the "Rams won that trade" boat at first as I really felt that Goff was being underrated as a QB, but as of right now, Rams are totally winning the trade, and Stafford is playing out of his mind. hard to not smile at that too.
― the utility infielder of theatre (Neanderthal), Monday, 1 November 2021 19:03 (three years ago)
yeah Cousins is insanely frustrating
basically under ideal circumstances, he has the ability to be great - good protection, clean pocket, receivers getting separation, etc. i've seen him throw some incredible passes.
however, being able to do it under non-ideal circumstances is kinda..the whole deal.
but yes, he's a real quandary in terms of "ok well tell me who we are going to go out and get that's better?" - it's not like players of Stafford's caliber aren't on the market that often
just looked it up and he's got the highest QBR of any QB who's thrown more than 200 passes, second in overall yards to Brady
― Blues Guitar Solo Heatmap (Free Download) (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Monday, 1 November 2021 20:09 (three years ago)
I hate to say it, but I just think Dallas is loaded for bear this year. They seemed to have fixed the sieve of a defense and that big o-line is healthy again.
Cousins is good but just not quite good enough. I'd say he is a bit better but not totally similar to Andy Dalton, who put up some big games and numbers at times for the Bengals but seemed to wilt when the really big games happened. Bengals really could never get totally over B-more or Pittsburgh in their division. Perhaps not as big on the passing numbers, but Alex Smith was the same way in KC, very efficient but not really able to get them over the top either.
Hatcats have gone 19-37 since they decided to pass. Got to think the Vikings for all those skills players and defensive prowess would have probably been kinda similar without him.
Damned if you do have him and definitely damned if you don't.
― earlnash, Tuesday, 2 November 2021 01:48 (three years ago)
NFL is weird though, explain why Tom Brady is having fits with NO. Saints won yesterday with Trevor Siemian, who had not really played much in 3 years. Siemian looked pretty decent too.
― earlnash, Tuesday, 2 November 2021 01:51 (three years ago)
Vikings are in a similar boat as Bengals. They got one team in division with the Packers that are almost always there at the top and they pretty much fight for 2nd every year with the Bears. Minnesota has a hard time getting it all together at once, one year their defense is good and then one year their offense is good and then one year they are awesome and then special teams or something stupid happens.
How many wins would the Bears have had if they EVER had someone like Cousins? When your best for the last 30 years is Jimmy Mac and Jay Cutler - you suck. Bears pretty much have to win ugly to win.
― earlnash, Tuesday, 2 November 2021 01:57 (three years ago)

lol yeah i was like . . . me too
i don't think it's fair to call the stafford trade 'the best(/worst) in history' (that is the herschel trade, fwiw).
if the rams win this year, then okay, because flags fly forever. but given the choice of going 0-8 with a bunch of picks + goff or 2-6 (at best) with stafford, i'll take the former. perhaps they could have gotten more, but it wasn't a bad deal for detroit.
(granted, the lions will blow those draft picks -- because they're the lions -- but still)
and if the rams *don't* win this year, stafford is suddenly 34 and more prone to aging like eli/roffles than he is to aging like brady.
― mookieproof, Tuesday, 2 November 2021 02:11 (three years ago)

jesse solomon, ike holt and david howard were solid players too, was reading their wikis and this deal kind of fucked up their careers because when they got to dallas, johnson kept them on the bench because he wanted to cut them to get the picks

it is kind of insane how prized top-tier running backs were back then, like they truly could be the difference maker, so you could see teams overspending for one. RB stock really dropped a lot in the last decade in the NFL given the drift to pass-happy offenses due to the QB renaissance.
― the utility infielder of theatre (Neanderthal), Tuesday, 2 November 2021 17:16 (three years ago)
Yeah I mean you *might* have been able to get this for Mahomes after he won the Super Bowl but I'd guess you'd be hard pressed to get a #1 for any running back now
― Blues Guitar Solo Heatmap (Free Download) (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Tuesday, 2 November 2021 17:38 (three years ago)
I was just wondering the other day why you so rarely see franchise running backs like Adrian Peterson anymore, then Derrick Henry got injured and I guess I got my answer. I don't know if linebackers are just that much bigger and faster than they were 20 years ago but it does seem like you can't just feed it to your guy 30+ times a game like you could in the Priest Holmes days. Though if you read the stories of what Priest's life is like now...yikes
― frogbs, Tuesday, 2 November 2021 17:44 (three years ago)

even back in 2008 when he became the starter I remember hearing a bunch of stories about him and getting the impression that he was....well, not an asshole exactly, but definitely a genuine eccentric.
the story I keep coming back to is Rodgers telling someone on the 49ers during a game that they should sign Greg Jennings, who was in a contract year (and the Packers #1 receiver at the time). I don't know how much that influenced Jennings' decision to leave but I'm guessing it didn't help. Rodgers says it never happened but it doesn't sound like something you'd just make up

Last year the Raiders, Broncos, and Saints paid hundreds of thousands in fines and lost draft picks for protocol violations.
but what exactly is the protocol violation? the interview where he claimed to be "immunized" wasn't just yesterday. the NFL knew it was a lie then, you can't just punish him now that it's public. oh wait I forgot that's exactly how the NFL handles these kinds of situations

― Blues Guitar Solo Heatmap (Free Download) (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Monday, 8 November 2021 17:36 (three years ago)
I'm curious what exactly it was the Packers saw in him. Rodgers was a weird case since a lot of people thought he would go #1 overall and he just kinda fell into Green Bay's lap. Jordan Love wasn't really on anyone's radar, he had one good year in college and it wasn't even his most recent one (his junior year he threw nearly as many picks as touchdowns). dude has "2nd rounder, might be a decent backup" written all over him, idk if anyone sees him as a potential franchise QB, but I guess GB saw something in him, so who knows. I hope I'm wrong but dude barely seems better than Brett Hundley and Hundley was a fucking disaster
that said its literally his first start, a lot of QBs have had pretty bad debuts especially when they get blitzed all the time (see: Fields, Justin). it gets said a lot but guys fresh out of college really do need a few games to adjust to the speed of the NFL, you need to develop that skill where half a second out of the snap you know if you have to get rid of the ball immediately. he's not really a scrambler.

― frogbs, Friday, 12 November 2021 19:30 (three years ago)
well they were completely ref-aided in the first part of their comeback, only one of the four penalties on that drive was legitimate, and it totalled like 30-40 yards.

and the one legit penalty call is ridic. the body weight on the QB rule actually got one of our DEs hurt in 2018 as he fell weirdly trying to avoid putting his entire weight on the QB and tore something, was lost for the season. all to avoid a flag.

Ok I apologize in advance for telling a fantasy football story but
I came into MNF up by 3.5 points, opponent only has Rams kicker to play. bad situation but hey, I've got a chance
Rams offense totally sputters out, scoring all of one touchdown. Late in the 4th they get to a 1st and goal situation, screw it all up as they've been doing all game, then kick a fucking field goal down 24 with four minutes to play
― frogbs, Tuesday, 16 November 2021 04:00 (three years ago)
something that made me less enthused about fantasy football is that for the second year in a row, I autodrafted, and haven't set a lineup and don't even know who is on my team, and I'm playoff bound currently.
(it's a non-money Yahoo league and life just got the best of me, and nobody has seemed to notice due to all of my wins)

I remember one year where our league was kinda wacky & I paid almost no attention, I autodrafted and wound up sneaking into the playoffs with a 6-7 record, playing sitting out players on multiple occasions. THREE of those six wins I got despite having the second-lowest point total for the week. I wound up making it to the finals. The guys I beat were pretty upset.
― frogbs, Tuesday, 16 November 2021 04:07 (three years ago)
At least the Raiders just embarrassed themselves on the field this week.
I do love seeing the words 'soviet-style character assassination' associated with the NFL.

crazy that after 28-3 everyone thought it was the end of the Pats dynasty and that the Falcons would be perennial Super Bowl contenders. they won one playoff game the following year and haven't had a winning record since, finishing 4-12 in 2020. meanwhile the Patriots made the next two Super Bowls, winning one, then Brady jumped ship and won another one with the Bucs, and now here we are as the the Pats with their new QB are about to win 5 straight, dropping the Falcons to 4-6 and pushing Matt Ryan one step closer to retirement

flags really feeling arbitrary this year.
our corner, Byron Jones, grabs a fistful of jersey while defending a WR, and no flag, Jets rightfully furious (me relieved).
our TE, Mike Gesicki, flagged for not one but two phantom offensive PIs, neither of which were legit. one ended a drive (the other would have ended even if no flag was thrown).

eh, Packers missed yet another FG and had 2 picks that didn't count (one bc it moved when it hit the ground, which was the right call, another for roughing the passer, which I thought was definitely not)
― frogbs, Monday, 22 November 2021 03:20 (three years ago)
in other news this Steelers defense is absolutely atrocious, just getting clowned on every single play. crazy how much TJ Watt has to do for them

actually now that I'm watching the video I think both Packers INTs should've stood, he seemed clearly down before the ball moved, but who am I to understand the cryptic 2000-year old tome that is the NFL rulebook

baker looked incredibly hobbled to me, both upper and lower body. they have a reasonable backup i thought so not sure why he was out there.
― call all destroyer, Monday, 29 November 2021 15:23 (three years ago)
well its arguably their most important game of the regular season and the Browns already dropped several "Mayfield is feelin' fine!" stories so I guess you can't just start your backup, even if it's abundantly clear that Mayfield is not, in fact, feelin' fine. coaches do that cowardly shit all the time where they just throw their hands up and say "look, you gotta play your best players in the big ones!" knowing the shit they'd catch if Case Keenum couldn't deliver them a win in Baltimore. even though he probably would have.
― frogbs, Monday, 29 November 2021 15:50 (three years ago)
this game was 7-3 and then I put the kids to bed and now it's 9-9. TD Washington then Seattle blocks the XP and returns it for 2. didn't know that was an actual rule lol

nothing more fun in football than the long interception return, where the defense gets to block and the offense gets to play defense. you got ball carriers holding the football with one hand as far away from their body as possible running backwards to find a hole while tacklers are pulling wrestling moves on the blockers drawing flags for "well you can't fucking do that"

not that you can really fault them for losing in weather conditions like this, but man, Bills go from "Super Bowl contender" to "may struggle to make playoffs" real quick this year.
I still think they'll make it obv but the AFC is clogged with teams with winning records atm
― Cool Im An Situation (Neanderthal), Tuesday, 7 December 2021 04:14 (three years ago)
i think my favorite 'weather' game, despite the shit result, was the Miami-Pittsburgh rain-soaked affair in 2007, where the mud was so thick there was a punt that came down and instead of rolling, just went 'plop' right into the mud and didn't go anywhere
― Cool Im An Situation (Neanderthal), Tuesday, 7 December 2021 04:17 (three years ago)
I think my favorite crazy one was the fog playoff game back in the 80s between the Bears and Eagles. You could not see sxxt. They were trying to call the game from the sideline reporter and you could not even see the middle of the field, let alone the other side from the sideline.

― hopefully this review helped someone (Neanderthal), Friday, 10 December 2021 03:03 (three years ago)
what the fuck is going on out there. center nearly snaps the ball over Ben's head (for like the 4th time), then Ben throws it right at a wide open receiver's feet even though he was like 4 yards away
― frogbs, Friday, 10 December 2021 03:11 (three years ago)
then they ran a draw on 3rd and 8 which only could've picked up a few yards at BEST, only to get bailed out by a penalty on the Vikings, making it 3rd and 3. Steelers cannot get the play off and Ben furiously calls time out, but not before the clock hits 0. so it's 3rd and 8 again, and Ben immediately gets sacked

“Just society has changed. You think how hard you pushed. … I believe there is greatness in everybody and it’s the coach’s job to find that greatness however you do that. Positive encouragement. Pushing them to be greater, making them work harder, identifying flaws and trying to fix [them]. I think everything is so fragile right now. And that includes coaching staffs. When I got into coaching, coaches weren’t making this kind of money and they didn’t have agents. Everything is so fragile where it used to be team, team, team. I remember talking about it in a staff meeting three days ago. I got into this profession because I had the greatest high school coach and it was all about team. All about the huddle.”

still baffled by this Lions team. they have 2 wins, 1 tie, and 1 game they probably should have won if not for a literal record-breaking field goal at the last second. all 4 of those were against teams with winning records! they just blew out a team that was the #1 seed in the NFC last week! would I be mistaken in thinking they could actually be somewhat decent next year if...they weren't so fucking cursed?

I think the Packers are pretty good. they got their asses kicked Week 1, lost the Jordan Love game, and then lost an overtime game in Minnesota thanks to some truly bizarre officiating. Rodgers is playing arguably as good as he ever has. I would think after this week they'd be the favorites to win the Super Bowl.
speaking of Tampa laid a big ol' goose egg at home tonight against the Saints (who don't even have Sean Payton!). first time Brady has been shut out in like...14 years. usually when a QB this good starts playing awful you figure it's because the receivers are fucking up but idk who he was even trying to throw it to half the time. Saints definitely whipped out the ol' "come on, their QB is 44 years old" defense
― frogbs, Monday, 20 December 2021 04:28 (three years ago)
oh. as you just mentioned.
anyway I think Brady might've lost the MVP to Rodgers this week but he'll be fine. Brady has a game like this every 2-3 years. gotta recalibrate the system, etc.

every year there seems to be a 12-13 win team that nobody thinks has a real shot and this year the Cowboys seem destined to be that team
I could kinda see talking myself into them but I suspect they're actually running pretty hot - their defense is not very good but they do generate a lot of turnovers. as we've seen with McCarthy's Packers teams you can't really count on that in the playoffs. also not to get all Bill Simmonsy here but both McCarthy & the Cowboys have a history of having things go horribly wrong during nationally televised games

Saints do seem to have some knowledge that works on the Brady Bucs in ways no one else does.
I sure as crap hope the Packers peak early and flail in the playoffs again, I really don't want that a-hole Rodgers to win at anything including checkers for the rest of his life.
Hard telling who is going to win it all. I'd suppose at this point you would figure Packers/Chiefs in the Superbowl, but I got to think it is a bit wide open at this point.
AFC North standings are a hoot, as all four teams are .500 or better.
Indy's win was pretty impressive as they just ran the ball down NE's throat.
Everyone wrote off Tennessee weeks ago when Henry went out and they keep saying he might be coming back. They are hanging around too.
Tampa's D-line is not going anywhere. I got to figure this weeks game was a fluke.
Dallas is not going to win, that team has a legacy of playing too stupid.
Same for the Chargers coach, that dude thinks he is way too smart. They do got a lot of talent.
Rams are too flaky too, but they got talent.
I think the Cardinals had a beneficial schedule that made them look a bit better than they really were. Kinda curious to see what happens when they play the Colts. I kinda got a feeling Indy is going to beat the crap out of them.
Rivera is a good coach as even with some key injuries, he has the Hatcats I think playing really above their talent. Rivera should have ended up the coach of the Bears, c'mon he was not on the Superbowl team, but he was there back in the DAY - but old lady Halas is going to pinch every nickel to the grave.

well yeah no loss is ~only~ due to reffing but when they start going galaxy brain on the game's biggest inflection points and miss a very blatant push off on the winning score in overtime I think you got an argument
obviously they totally botched the end of the Browns game in our favor, so whatever, it happens
in other news this is not a particularly inspiring first half from the WFT
― frogbs, Monday, 27 December 2021 03:23 (three years ago)
apparently if Miami wins tomorrow, we are now in the 7th playoff seed.
the odds are still only 25% cos holding onto it will be tough with Tennessee and NE in back to back weeks (the latter is at home).
but just insane considering the 1-7 start. we do also have the weakest strength of schedule and strength of victory which helped, but we also lost games to bottom feeders during that 7 game losing streak.
elsewhere in the league, my thoughts are...
there are only three teams I think anybody is fucking afraid of, and I think that's Green Bay, Tampa Bay ,and now the Chiefs have re-entered that discussion.
there are other "very good" teams but they tend to have red flags. begrudging, I feel like TB is in a good position to repeat, but I feel like the AFC's result is going to be random af because the Chiefs don't feel like they're gonna be a neo-Patriots and restart dynasty discussions.
my wish, let's have a Green Bay-Titans Super Bowl and give the Titans a win. a) because they're one of the few franchises that don't have one and b) I want to give shit to all my fellow Fins fans who shit on Tannehill when he wins a ring.
chances of this match up happening, 1,347,383,383,284,283: 1
― hopefully this review helped someone (Neanderthal), Monday, 27 December 2021 03:56 (three years ago)
Tampa is really beat up at this point. Losing Godwin for the season is kind of a big deal as he was kinda the Wes Welker/Troy Brown glue guy that Brady used a ton in their offense. They also lost a starting DB for the season and their D-line is knicked up.
― earlnash, Monday, 27 December 2021 14:00 (three years ago)
Green Bay plays teams pretty close they are not totally dominating, so they could get beat and you never know who might get hurt the last couple games of the year, but they look to be a big step head of the rest of the NFC.
I think the AFC is a bit more open. KC seems to have it's mojo back, but I could see someone oddball upsetting their way into the Superbowl.
― earlnash, Monday, 27 December 2021 14:03 (three years ago)
Yeah GB is doing that thing again where they dominate all game and force the announcers to spend half their time talking about how great Rodgers is but then once the 4th rolls around they go 3-and-out a few times in a row and suddenly this team they should’ve put away long ago is one play away from winning it. They tend to win those games anyway but that shit bites them hard in the playoffs. Also Mason Crosby really feels like a potential Chekhov’s gun here, if they need him for a game winning FG I will probably have a heart attack

Colts/Raiders game got a bit more interesting as Wentz is out with covid and Longhorn rookie Sam Ehlinger is going to start (so far).
If Taylor is ok, I'd just give him the ball 50 times. Raiders are giving up 115 a game (kinda late middling).
Steelers are giving up 142 yards on the ground a game...yikes and with Big Ben kinda sucking and no running game how the heck are they a .500 club? Looked it up and their punter is next to last on the table in yards too and the Steelers usually have kinda crap kickers too.
And some Pittsburgh fans want to get rid of Tomlin? That is some wizardary to both suck at throwing the ball, running the ball and stopping the run, punting and at least win half yer games. Just saying...

― earlnash, Monday, 3 January 2022 09:54 (three years ago)
I wonder if any ESPN personalities are gonna be brave enough to suggest this is probably CTE. someone put together a timeline of AB these last 4 years and it's nuts, in addition to the sexual assault and battery allegations there is so much weird stuff, like threatening to retire over his helmet or throwing his furniture out the window. Which could have killed someone!! not to mention the fake vaxx card. dude is not right.
maybe I'm speculating too much but I wonder if it's affecting Rodgers too. obviously not on the field but he's gained a reputation lately as a legitimately strange dude who holds inexplicable grudges towards everyone and always seems to have a different accounting of events than everyone else. does anyone even know exactly what all the offseason drama was about? he was incredibly media-savvy his first few years and now he seems legitimately confused as to why everyone's so mad at him. he's always been very private so who knows if this anti-vaxx stuff is out of character for him but I am pretty sure the Rodgers of 6-7 years ago would not have given that idiotic interview

Rodgers was pretty left wing on the whole Kaepernick thing so I suspect he's maybe more of a Joe Rogan type who is just willing to vehemently defend the last thing he heard. idk he just seems to be getting increasingly erratic & confusing in everything he says publicly in a way you don't see often in other sports

Lions really played an entertaining game, they pulled out every trick in the book and most of 'em worked (the fake punt was a good throw too, just broken up). Cost themselves the #1 pick, but at least the fans got a show.
In other news, fucking pathetic performance by the Colts, who just needed to win vs. Jacksonville to get into the playoffs and instead got throttled by a team that lost by 40 last week. Should make tonight's game interesting since a tie would put both the Raiders and the Chargers in the playoffs but I don't think they have the balls to actually go through with it. at mid-season, I'd say yeah, I thought he was safe once he had won 8 out of his last 9 games.
On the one hand, he definitely did some head-scratchy things as a head coach strategically, and during that 7 game losing streak, it was inexplicable how the team seemed unable to fix issues week to week, esp since it was apparent the team was much better talent-wise than their record indicated.
but on the other hand, since Grier (the GM) wasn't fired, there's talk that maybe his resistance to some of Grier's draft picks/attempt to get Deshaun Watson lead to it.
Amazing that they leave the GM that drafted an offensive line that boasts 4 of the 5 worst linemen in the league with his job intact.

I mean, he wasn't fault-free, but our fanbase is terrible and ownership seems to do the same kneejerk shit our fanbase wants. we run players out of town who are actually good and go on to great careers with other teams, and Tua has been basically deemed "not the answer" since he took his first snap last year.
for years it was "Ryan Tannehill isn't an elite qb". guess what? Only like 3-5 QBs will ever be ELITE at a time, hence the word "elite". 2nd tier QBs can still play very well and win! ffs Joe Flacco won a super bowl! and now Tannehill is going to the playoffs....again. and is doing well in Tennessee, and our fans are acting shocked.
we'll run Tua out of town too and he'll be a next level player somewhere, I'm sure of it. probably for a division rival.

xpost yeah a parlay = "all of these things have to happen for you to win", not something you could revisit once OT started. Most sportsbooks have a Cashout feature if your outcome is likely but you don't want to risk waiting for end of game, but I don't think that would be allowed in the case of OT, where it's far more likely someone will score than not.

the problem is what the reaction will be.
fans could theoretically file class action suits if this turned out to be true, as it could be considered a form of fraud. so the NFL will probably try to blame a few 'bad apples' as owners, fine them, and then will change the draft into a lottery system like the NBA.
and they'll be happier that people are focusing on THIS problem than the other, racially-concerning items brought up.

on the one hand, I really dislike how he handled Tua (telling him "if you're gonna be that bad, I'd have drafted Mac Jones" in the middle of a game).
on the other, he was royally fucked and I support him 100% on this. and I hate our owner and hope he's given the donald STerling treatment.
― he's very big in the region of my butthole (Neanderthal), Wednesday, 2 February 2022 18:39 (three years ago)
if true, i'd imagine the league takes this way more seriously than sterling was by the nba, just given that they are increasingly in bed with gambling companies and preserving the integrity of games (and the notion that there are payoffs to throw games, which is really just the owner doing what mob guys used to do in boxing) really threatens that, which i would imagine is their biggest area of potential earnings growth.
― Blues Guitar Solo Heatmap (Free Download) (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Wednesday, 2 February 2022 18:49 (three years ago)
i mean shit if donald sterling was an nfl owner i'd expect he'd still own the team
yeah the gambling link is an interesting angle, and why I am guessing Congress will threaten to investigate the NFL (like they always do) for 'improprieties'.
whereas come on, we know teams tank, we always did, the thing was you just never actually fessed up to it for good. Flores broke the unwritten rule but paying someone to tank IS a touch beyond "encouraging playing younger players for development purposes, if you get my drift wink wink".
― he's very big in the region of my butthole (Neanderthal), Wednesday, 2 February 2022 18:54 (three years ago)
I read Joe Posnanski's Browns Diary during the Hue Jackson years and he was always bewildered by some of the moves (particularly in-game) that Cleveland would make, often writing stuff like "I know for a fact that Jackson is a better coach than this, he never did this kind of thing with the Raiders, so what is going on here?" That 0-16 Browns team was far from average but there's no reason they should've lost every game; they weren't like the Lions of '08 where they just sucked at every position, they had a lot of talent but just blew games every which way they could. Joe never went as far to outright suggest they were throwing games on purpose, but he did use a lot of language like "it's almost as if..."

― Blues Guitar Solo Heatmap (Free Download) (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Wednesday, 2 February 2022 19:17 (three years ago)
Deliberately making in-game decisions that ensure a loss is called "taking a dive", not tanking.
Tanking is where you strip your team of talented, experienced players and field a team of talented but raw rookies and veteran mediocrities on cheap contracts you can ditch later. Then you let them play and lose, because the team was built specifically for losing games and can safely be expected to lose all on their own.
― more difficult than I look (Aimless), Wednesday, 2 February 2022 19:24 (three years ago)

i personally don't see why match-fixing is illegal -- joke's on you if you're betting on games, honestly -- but yeah the rest of the world disagrees. particularly when the leagues now have such close relationships with gambling apps
― mookieproof, Wednesday, 2 February 2022 20:47 (three years ago)
well, there's the whole folly of buying tickets to games that you think aren't predetermined

Jet fans will sue, then someone will remind them they weren't tanking, they just sucked

well yeah, you kinda answered your own question there. if a team is deliberately trying to lose it's not just a rogue decision from the coach, and if several people know then in the gambler's mind that means HUNDREDS OF PEOPLE KNEW and deliberately FUCKED YOU OVER, which is just bad PR for sports betting all around

The fun thing about this is that it’s coming right as a No. 1 overall pick took a 2-14 team to the Super Bowl in 2 years so you could easily argue the Browns were actually right to do what they did

i need these tanking teams to drop little bread crumbs for Week 1 games from now on so I can clean up and retire

i gotta say it is weird that nashville got to the superbowl in their first year actually in the city, teeing up years of .500 futility and a lot of early exits in the playoffs and somehow also a rabid tennessee fanbase that wasn't that into the game until they came thiiiiiiiiis close to a championshipprobably just a coincidence

Posnanski has an article up about this and he mentions something I had totally forgotten about - when Hue Jackson got fired, he was notably pissed about it, which drew a lot of mockery because he only won 3 of his 40 games...but looking back it makes total sense, cuz the implicit agreement must've been that they were gonna actually start trying in Year 3
also makes the point that Hue was probably not literally paid $100k per loss, but rather that there was some clauses in his contract that rewarded him for doing dumb shit like starting Kizer every game

due to the nature of football as a sport the NFL hasn't had a major tanking problem but if they really want to eradicate the incentive to tank they're going to need to implement a lottery and some of the stuff the NBA has instituted. in the year that flores was allegedly offered money to tank, the dolphins would have been able to draft joe burrow had they actually tanked. burrow will end up being worth billions of dollars to the bengals if he plays a full career, and i think any dolphins fans would say it would've been worth all the losses, flores suing the team, the owner being thrown out of the league etc to have him. of course flores would probably still have his job if they had tanked for burrow. the browns main problem was not paying their coach to tank but tanking in a year where no elite QB was available (the year they took myles garrett) and then tanking for baker mayfield

“Herbert. Throws. It is caught. Second touchdown of the day for Andrews.”
I’ve never watched the Pro Bowl before. It really is as bad as everyone says.

Yeah it doesn’t work at all for the same reason there’s not really a such thing as “pick up football” the way there is basketball and baseball (if you have enough people)
