― horseshoe, Sunday, 16 January 2022 04:22 (three years ago)
Bills seem like they might be better than people think - all 11 of their wins were by double digits and all but one of their losses was by 7 or less. They have the best point differential in the league.
― frogbs, Sunday, 16 January 2022 04:27 (three years ago)
they are really talented on both sides of the ball, but the offense self destructed a bunch of times this season. Defense has been legit all year.
― horseshoe, Sunday, 16 January 2022 04:29 (three years ago)
they kinda remind me of the Packers when they won it all in 2010, they feel untrustworthy but all the metrics really seem to like them. Pats had the 3rd best point differential, beating them by a zillion is no small deal

never having played, I always wondered what it was like to be a QB, like, if you get hit or brought down as you throw, how soon do you know *exactly* what happened? obviously the crowd clues you in as to whether you scored/got a big gain as there are levels, but I always felt like I'd start jumping up and down and celebrating a TD and my WR buddies would come over and be like "slow your roll, we only got to the goal line".

McCarthy in not knowing hte rules shockah
fucking QB draw, and why didn't he just go down a second or two earlier, can he not throw the ball an extra five yards?
like any Cowboy woulda caught the mary.
― they were written with a ouija board and a rhyming dictionary (Neanderthal), Monday, 17 January 2022 15:09 (three years ago)
actually don't think the QB draw was that bad a play - they probably figured one shot from 20 yards out was better than two from 40. of course that is contingent on not running the clock out. apparently they probably could've gotten it off had Dak handed the ball to the ref instead of his center but idk how aware of that he was gonna be in the moment
would've been an insane loss for SF had the Cowboys pulled it off somehow. Cowboys-esque, even
― frogbs, Monday, 17 January 2022 15:38 (three years ago)
thing is though, he could have slid a second or two sooner, he had cleared the first down by a lot. he got greedy cos the middle of the field was open but like, give yourself up sooner.
― they were written with a ouija board and a rhyming dictionary (Neanderthal), Monday, 17 January 2022 15:40 (three years ago)
the clock ran out because they didnt have enough time to make that play which imho makes it bad
― lag∞n, Monday, 17 January 2022 15:40 (three years ago)
even if he went down earlier its still cutting it way too close
which is why teams throw to the sidelines in these situations, its a known quantity
― lag∞n, Monday, 17 January 2022 15:41 (three years ago)
well yeah, I still don't think they should have run it
― they were written with a ouija board and a rhyming dictionary (Neanderthal), Monday, 17 January 2022 15:42 (three years ago)
but, y'know, Cowboys
― they were written with a ouija board and a rhyming dictionary (Neanderthal), Monday, 17 January 2022 15:44 (three years ago)
I mean, there's also the factor of running one play with one second left from thirty yards out means that basically the 49ers can rush two people and drop back 9, which is very very low on the probability scale for conversion (of course it's happened, rather thrillingly, but people tend to remember those miracle plays rather than the unsuccessful counterparts, which happen 100 times as frequently).
your odds aren't insanely greater with two plays within ten seconds, but the defense at least has to protect the sideline routes and can't wholly commit to keeping you out of the end zone.
― they were written with a ouija board and a rhyming dictionary (Neanderthal), Monday, 17 January 2022 15:51 (three years ago)
the Cowboys' last play was crazy but not as relevant to the outcome as their 14 penalties
― Brad C., Monday, 17 January 2022 16:10 (three years ago)
^^^ this.
Yeah the whole "Requiem for a Heavyweight" vibe would almost make a more cynical me think that the Raiders/Chargers ending was prearranged, just to get Ben into the playoffs one last time for this express purpose.
― Three Rings for the Elven Bishop (Dan Peterson), Monday, 17 January 2022 16:12 (three years ago)
well ties are extremely rare - there's almost never more than one in a given NFL season - which is what almost made Chargers-Raiders so awesome. people suspected there may be some collusion, especially if it went into OT, but instead it involved a fucking insane comeback in which Herbert converted like half the 4th-and-longs of the entire NFL season, plus two scores in overtime. and even still the Raiders ruined it for everyone
worst part of it had to be that Big Ben "word cloud" they stuck up there in the 4th quarter. I can think of a couple words they missed!!
― frogbs, Monday, 17 January 2022 16:52 (three years ago)
it's funny how it was talked about like an elephant in the room, "omg, will they COLLUDE to tie!", when in European football, teams have done that in tournament play quite often.
there was one infamous match I don't remember where one team realized they would do better to lose the match and started trying to score on their own goal, and the other team started defending to stop them.
― they were written with a ouija board and a rhyming dictionary (Neanderthal), Monday, 17 January 2022 16:56 (three years ago)
and yes people should probably stop talking about what Dallas should have done on the final drive, they had 32 seconds and no timeouts & needed a touchdown, that is an insanely tall order for even the best NFL offense. the fact that they got so close is a minor miracle though the 49ers kinda let it happen knowing all they had to do was defend the end zone. they made a zillion other mistakes which affected their WP% more & it sucks because I really wanted to see McCarthy's return to Green Bay. and if I'm being real honest I'm actually starting to feel a little bad for Cowboys fans.
― frogbs, Monday, 17 January 2022 16:56 (three years ago)
xp well it's a bit different in a sport where offensive and defensive units are completely separate and teams generally score more than once per game
tbh I'm just a fan of sports drama and if the Raiders had knelt it down despite being in FG range it would've been really funny to see Steelers fans go berserk. would've easily been one of the all-time funniest outcomes in any NFL game.
― frogbs, Monday, 17 January 2022 17:10 (three years ago)
i will never feel sorry for Cowboys fans, laughing at them is always hilarious
― they were written with a ouija board and a rhyming dictionary (Neanderthal), Monday, 17 January 2022 17:19 (three years ago)
Keep in mind the Niners had lost Bosa and their starting middle line backer during the game. I think those 2 minute drills often work as the d-linemen are often just gassed and and often just don't have the pursuit play after play at the end of the game.
The daring call was the Niners going all out blitz (again I think go big or go home as they were down two of their best) to get the ball back on the drive before.
Cowboys and the Raiders both could have won their games but their usual dumb play brought them down.
― earlnash, Monday, 17 January 2022 18:07 (three years ago)
I think Dalals would have had at least 2 shots at the end zone where they were located. Nature of pass interference, I think that is a decent set of odd myself.

― they were written with a ouija board and a rhyming dictionary (Neanderthal), Monday, 17 January 2022 18:12 (three years ago)
curious what the odds are of 2 shots from 40 vs. one shot from 20. I figured Dak would give you as good a chance from that far out as anyone not named Rodgers, Brady, or Mahomes, but idk how good he is from that deep.
― frogbs, Monday, 17 January 2022 18:42 (three years ago)

if it hadn't been for rogers, I'd only have a tepid interest in the niners winning, but rogers' antics in the past year made that outcome awfully sweet.

pretty sure if we actually were to ask most NFL players about their views and have them returned to us on a paper questionnaire, we'd be horrified by at least 35% of the responses, if not a lot more.
not to diminish the douchiness of A-Rodg, but this isn't exactly a forward thinking sport.
lord though, if San Fran wants to advance any further, Jimmy G is gotta do more than this turd of a performance.

Yeah hard to point too many fingers specifically when you score 3 points in the final 58 minutes of the game
Funny how so much of the off-season drama revolved around Rodgers wanting more of a say in personnel decisions which led to them bringing back Cobb, who he basically didn’t look for at all

I’ve always defended Rodgers when it comes to the Packers playoff failures but this is pretty bad. He’s got 3 options down the field - MVS open for a touchdown, Lazard wide open for like a 30+ yard gain, but he winds up going to Adams who is double covered. Given the situation if he makes a different decision the Packers almost certainly win. Frustrating because Rodgers rarely fucks this up; this is like rookie QB shit. Special teams deserve a lot of blame too but this loss is mostly on him.

The blocked field goal attempt used to be such a frequent and exciting feature of watching NFL in the ‘70s/‘80s. I’m not totally sure why it seems so hard to do nowadays. Was thrilled that SF accomplished one and threw in a blocked punt as well. For that matter I loved that GB got all those sacks - that also felt like a throwback to the days when defense was fun.

if you're wondering "how did Kelce get so open?" on that final throw in regulation, here it is. Bills playing prevent defense despite Chiefs having all their timeouts. idk what they were thinking
also watching some footage of the Packers offense from Saturday and indeed it appears that Rodgers played a pretty bad game after the first drive. St. Brown and Deguara were fairly open on a bunch of plays (not wide open, but open enough where Rodgers should easily have been able to hit them) but instead he keeps trying to force it to Adams or dump it to Jones. obviously hitting Adams is what sank the 49ers during the regular season matchup and doubling him seems to be the main adjustment they made after that first drive. insane that Rodgers doesn't seem to figure this out at all.

i'm trying to understand this - so yards after catch is cheating somehow?
a big part of being a good QB is being able to find players and space and hit them in stride (the biggest factor in YAC)
here's the top 10 teams for yards after catch:
Rank Team Yards after Catch1 Kansas City Chiefs 27002 Tampa Bay Buccaneers 26233 Green Bay Packers 24854 Cincinnati Bengals 24235 Las Vegas Raiders 23576 Los Angeles Chargers 23507 Arizona Cardinals 23078 San Francisco 49ers 22649 Dallas Cowboys 220710 Los Angeles Rams 2145
here's the top 10 passers:
Tom Brady5316
Justin Herbert5014
Matthew Stafford4886
Patrick Mahomes4839
Derek Carr4804
Joe Burrow4611
Dak Prescott4449
Josh Allen4407
Kirk Cousins4221
Aaron Rodgers4115
so, it's correlating (josh allen excepting - bills yac is #20) that the best QBs have the most YAC, presumably because of accuracy/timing/etc (could be speed but for example tyreek hill is not high up on the YAC list and he's generally considered maybe the fastest person in the NFL)
― Blues Guitar Solo Heatmap (Free Download) (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Monday, 24 January 2022 19:52 (three years ago)
over the course of a full season, sure. I think the point he was trying to make is that there is a lot of variance when you add in YAC. I just thought the stat was funny considering that, y'know, the Bears could've had Mahomes
― frogbs, Monday, 24 January 2022 20:00 (three years ago)
yards after catch is cheating somehow?
I was more trying to respond that a weird made-up stat like 'passing yardage gained per minute of clock time' is not a reliable measure of quarterback skill, compared to, well, any QB stat that's widely used and recognized. It's striking, but it's not a good measure of anything. What's more telling are the number of points scored by KC in that amount of time.

what's really striking to me about all this is remembering when Rodgers came into the league; here was this guy who was supposed to be the first overall pick, and instead he just kept sliding and sliding until he finally got picked by the Packers, who made him sit for 3 years behind a guy who didn't really seem interested in training him for the starting role. there was this sense that he'd gotten screwed and he was asked about it in interviews all the time. and he actually handled them really well, basically saying "look, I'm going to be the starter, nobody on this planet is going to feel sorry for me so I won't feel sorry for myself". dude would not entertain any of the drama. I know that was a while ago but going from that to "Help! I'm being cancelled! Nobody likes me because they can't handle my opinions!!!" is pretty nuts. I can only imagine the shit that's gone on behind the scenes.

― bulb after bulb, Wednesday, 26 January 2022 03:41 (three years ago)
nah in fact there's a good argument to be made for Mercedes Lewis' fumble losing GB the game because it guaranteed that Rodgers was never gonna throw to him again. I remember a few years back some receiver running the wrong route leading to an ugly looking pick and Rodgers like, wouldn't throw it to him again until 5 weeks later. I think it was Valdez-Scantling actually. Who by the way was also open on like 20 different pass plays
funny thing is Favre was the exact opposite, if a player fumbled he would pretty much always throw it back to him right away the next series

― he's very big in the region of my butthole (Neanderthal), Sunday, 30 January 2022 20:50 (three years ago)
Bengals must’ve figured something out at halftime
― frogbs, Sunday, 30 January 2022 22:19 (three years ago)
That end of play by the Chiefs looming pretty large now. Wonder if McCarthy is sitting at home like “yeah nothing you can do about that”
― frogbs, Sunday, 30 January 2022 22:21 (three years ago)
Holy fuck how did Burrow avoid that
― frogbs, Sunday, 30 January 2022 22:34 (three years ago)
Incredible game
― he's very big in the region of my butthole (Neanderthal), Sunday, 30 January 2022 22:37 (three years ago)
Still can’t see the Bungles making it to the Super Bowl but uhh this might be Mahomes last possession
― frogbs, Sunday, 30 January 2022 22:46 (three years ago)
Wonder if they should let them score
― frogbs, Sunday, 30 January 2022 22:58 (three years ago)

― frogbs, Sunday, 30 January 2022 23:22 (three years ago)
Besides Andy Reid

Report from Kansas City on local news
"I felt a great disturbance in the Force, as if millions of voices suddenly cried out in terror and were suddenly silenced. I fear something terrible has happened."

Hell of a game and KC winning the toss again but losing anyway feels like some kind of justice
― Guayaquil (eephus!), Sunday, 30 January 2022 23:26 (three years ago)
Bengals so much resemble one of those fun & long suffering teams that usually loses in the Wild Card round due to the obvious holes in their lineup but welp here we are. Hope they got one more in em
― frogbs, Sunday, 30 January 2022 23:27 (three years ago)
Love the Bengals finding the rushing game just when they need it to get to FG range without risking the pick
― Guayaquil (eephus!), Sunday, 30 January 2022 23:28 (three years ago)
Burrow was not throwing a pick come on
― frogbs, Sunday, 30 January 2022 23:35 (three years ago)
Go Rams
― Bee OK, Sunday, 30 January 2022 23:38 (three years ago)
Haven't actively followed pro ball for a few years now, though I kinda wish I'd watched last week's games. We're 50% of the way to the Burrow/Stafford super bowl I'd tune in for, though, so go Rams.
― Ⓓⓡ. (Johnny Fever), Sunday, 30 January 2022 23:46 (three years ago)
no discredit to cincy, kc gave me a real playing w their food vibe that game… from not getting pts at the end of the first half to mahomes holding the ball soo loong several times idk im sure the coverage was good but he needed to not try to make the perfect play and just let his best playmakers make a play… the coaching is def to blame as well
― johnny crunch, Sunday, 30 January 2022 23:52 (three years ago)
Yeah Chiefs final play of the 1st half was some galaxy brain Mike McCarthy shit
― frogbs, Monday, 31 January 2022 00:02 (three years ago)
you're probably right but he sure looked wild and wobbly towards the end of regulation
― Guayaquil (eephus!), Monday, 31 January 2022 00:05 (three years ago)
Stephen A is on one right now
See what I’m saying, @danorlovsky7. This dude Stafford is very difficult to trust man. Why in the hell would he throw that pass. This is what I’m talking about man. He’d better not lose to know damn Porn Star Jimmy!— Stephen A Smith (@stephenasmith) January 31, 2022

Burrow is a vibes QB and vibes QBs don’t throw picks in that situation
― frogbs, Monday, 31 January 2022 00:07 (three years ago)
So happy for Cincinnati. I have no real horse in this second race, but SF have my thanks for keeping Green Bay out of this, so let’s go Niners.

― frogbs, Monday, 31 January 2022 00:34 (three years ago)
Sheesh Stafford had two TDs dropped and had to settle for a missed FG
― frogbs, Monday, 31 January 2022 00:49 (three years ago)

― Bee OK, Monday, 31 January 2022 01:42 (three years ago)

― Bee OK, Monday, 31 January 2022 01:55 (three years ago)

can't really quibble with either team winning. though obv I'll pull for the team that's never won over the Rams, but that Rams team that won was like 22 years ago
― he's very big in the region of my butthole (Neanderthal), Monday, 31 January 2022 02:38 (three years ago)
that was one of the weirdest looking game-ending plays I've ever seen
― frogbs, Monday, 31 January 2022 02:38 (three years ago)
so after 50+ years of it never happening, two consecutive Super Bowls played on one of the team's home fields.

Happy for Matty Stafford. Will he get a ring? Who knows. But he deserves to play in the Super Bowl at least once before he's done.
― Ⓓⓡ. (Johnny Fever), Monday, 31 January 2022 02:54 (three years ago)

kinda wanted Handsome Jimmy to bungle his way into the Super Bowl but this is good too. Stafford deserves a chance and this team sold out so much to compete now, I like when that's rewarded
― frogbs, Monday, 31 January 2022 03:16 (three years ago)

incredible is good and it's fun to watch. but that doesn't mean non- affiliated fans don't appreciate it when another team rises up and beats the incredible team. that's great fun for the non-affiliated fans, too.
