Breaking: NFL and NFLPA reached agreement on an 11-game suspension for Browns QB Deshaun Watson, per sources. The settlement also includes a fine of $5 million that will go to charity. Deal still is not signed but it is agreed to. pic.twitter.com/2dFvcePL9k— Adam Schefter (@AdamSchefter) August 18, 2022
Still should be a full season, but I guess Watson coming back to a 3-8 Browns team is kinda funny

i don't understand why any teams are having 'joint practices', let alone the two teams that faced each other in the super bowl
― mookieproof, Thursday, 25 August 2022 21:59 (three years ago)
It is an old football tradition. My high school would usually do a joint scrimmage one with another team in the county (usually one we did not play) before the season started.
Then again, practice was still pretty much full on and in full pads except Thursday walk through before the JV game.

I kinda like not following any football (or sports in general) these days, I get surprised. Heck I did not know the Steelers took a guy from Pitt in the first round. I kinda remember from highlights he was pretty good, but I did not know they took him in the first round.
I guess it comes around they did not want to screw up like they did with Marino back in the bronze age. Mark Malone my a$$.

when people have pointed out Tua was a bit sloppy today (which he was, admittedly) as a pre-text to shit on him, I point them to Rodgers and Burrows's games today.
Rodgers's was worse, I think, because a few of Burrows's turnovers were due to his o-line rapid collapsing, whereas all Aaron did was check down all game and held onto the ball way too long.
Rodgers still plays at a high level but I think he's lost what made him a cut above the league around the time he was winning the Super Bowl, like he shows up when he feels like it. must be that 'cleanse'.

I’d say that I’m flabbergasted at the clock mismanagement at the end of that game, but it happens so often anymore that I’m just kind of numb to it. Why are NFL teams so bad at this???
― Mr. Snrub, Tuesday, 13 September 2022 03:25 (three years ago)
i don’t think it was clock mismanagement— if you honestly believe having your kicker make the second-longest kick in nfl history is more likely than russell wilson picking up five yards, then letting the clock wind down to 20 seconds is the right move. it’s the first part that’s the problem
― mookieproof, Tuesday, 13 September 2022 03:32 (three years ago)
No, no, this wasn't mismanagement, this shit was by design. Hackett seemed to think this was a brilliant plan, sneaking McManus onto the field after the timeout and freaking Carroll the fuck out for a moment.
A head coach of an NFL team thought a kick whose length is two yards off of the all time record had better odds than picking up five yards with a $242 million dollar QB has a job.

― horseshoe, Wednesday, 14 September 2022 13:25 (three years ago)
I actually saw a pair of dummies 'defending' the decision, suggesting that they may have picked up the first down, but it still might have left them with a 50+ yard FG, and it's like....moving the ball down the field wasn't Denver's problem on Monday, it was actually punching it into the end zone. and they had three timeouts!
― Bell Bivalent Devax (Neanderthal), Wednesday, 14 September 2022 13:30 (three years ago)
it's a coaching decision much like the time Nick Saban threw a challenge flag on the field, which no ref looked at or saw as they were awaiting the snap, and instead of either clicking the electronic notification button to get their attention, or actually trying to get any refs attention, he just did nothing and the play went on with no challenge.
― Bell Bivalent Devax (Neanderthal), Wednesday, 14 September 2022 13:32 (three years ago)

― Blues Guitar Solo Heatmap (Free Download) (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Wednesday, 14 September 2022 14:33 (three years ago)
yeah I don't know the numbers exactly but I think those 52-56 yard FGs are like a 50/50 proposition whereas what the Broncos was trying to do would literally need to break an all-time record. I think there's only a couple kickers in the league who can even hit that distance in warmups. though I suppose it's possible that McManus could actually hit those in Denver.
― frogbs, Wednesday, 14 September 2022 14:44 (three years ago)
I saw in an article about the call that only two 64 yard FGs have been made in the history of the NFL
― Blues Guitar Solo Heatmap (Free Download) (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Wednesday, 14 September 2022 14:50 (three years ago)
sheesh, can't believe I forgot about Justin Tucker's 66-yard game winner last year already. suppose I just filed that away in the "things that could only happen to Detroit" drawer in my head. Tucker is a god among kickers though.
the other one was Prater's 64 yarder, but that was in Denver. I wonder if he could've hit that elsewhere.

― Bell Bivalent Devax (Neanderthal), Wednesday, 14 September 2022 15:25 (three years ago)
i always feel like the decision is one of those 'instant gratification' things that sometimes flummoxes new coaches, like. "hmm - i could try for first down here, but we'd need to run a few more plays before we could kick to win, and who knows, maybe we fumble. or shit, I could just kick RIGHT NOW, no waiting needed! yeah, it's gonna be hard, but if we make it we win, and oh will the fans love me"

sure but maybe a bit unreasonable to expect him to think to do this given they were already up 7, with less than 2 minutes on the clock and no timeouts for the Jets. that's an impossible situation to come back from! like on par with fumbling a kneeldown and having it ran back for a touchdown! granted the odds do go up when you just decide not to cover the deep WR at all, when Flacco hit Corey Davis there was literally nobody else on screen with him when the camera panned over. I don't really believe in firing a guy for fucking up one play but I'd make an exception in this case.

I'm finding it amusing that actual Dolphins fans are still doubling down on Tua sucking after that.

yeah I dont get where that comes from, maybe he's not immediately lighting the league on fire like Burrow or Lamar but in a more traditional sense he's kinda exactly where you want a 3rd year QB to be. it does suck though that after watching the Patriots dynasty absolutely dominate that division for two decades it now looks like the Bills will be a juggernaut for the foreseeable future

I enjoyed the 80s Oilers, even though they royally beat the shit out of us the first time I remember watching them play my Fins as a 9 year old (39-7, with only a Marc Logan kick return for a TD as our offense). Moon was truly a master of the sport. in both CFL and the NFL.
if Instant Replay had existed, Bills may not have completed their epic comeback, as Beebe's touchdown to make it 35-17 shouldn't have counted (he stepped out before catching it). just imagine that, Oilers mighta taken it all!

have to say that the ball came out of warren moon's hand in a fashion i've not seen before or since. it was beautiful and seemingly effortless
(almost ashamed to admit that i feel like i've seen a glimpse of this in tyrod taylor? nevertheless)
randall cunningham had the arm -- i mean he could throw the ball out of the endzone if he felt like it. but warren moon could drop it in where he wanted iirc
― mookieproof, Tuesday, 20 September 2022 04:55 (two years ago)
Houston Oilers were a pretty entertaining team at times.
When I was a kid they were really good and one of my first football heroes was Earl Campbell. There are a bunch of crazy plays of them literally tearing the jersey off him. He once knocked out a safety for the Broncos by running over him.
They 'should' have perhaps won an AFC title and went to the Superbowl one year with Bum Philips as there was a total crap call that is probably one of the first big 'replay shows this was a huge bad call' on a TD catch in the endzone.
They were in the same division with the Bengals as a kid, so I saw them play a bunch.
They were a wacky as hell team when Jerry Glanville coached them both doing crazy shit like blitzing everyone every single play and then having June Jones really by modern football 'run and shoot' offense which was pretty much screw the run game and run the spread a couple decades before the college game made it a thing.
Warren Moon is a serious NFL hero. Dude got racist treatment by the NFL went to Canada and was so f'ing good there winning with Winnipeg they HAD to give him a shot and then he played into his 40s and was totally awesome (outside some off field issues of course).
They also had a killer song. ZZ Top should cut it.
― earlnash, Wednesday, 21 September 2022 01:08 (two years ago)
Oh yeah, the Bengals were rivals big time with them in the Sam Wyche/Boomer Esiason era. There was some nasty games between them. Sam Wyche freakin' hated Glanville. He called him out over the PA after a game in Cincy.

One of these weekends, I need to load some pictures of some stuff I found in my dad's garage onto the internet.
I found a couple of old 80s Street & Smith Football preview magazines from the mid 80s. I got the basically the two years of the big Browns/Broncos 'drives'.
In my Dad's toolbox I found a 1981 Jimmy the Greek little football preview pamphlet. It was the kind of thing that would get sold and then this one had a tool and die companies stamp on the back as a give away. It is definitely a window into a different era of football.

There are others, I'd say the 'holy roller' play where Stabler basically fumbles on purpose into the endzone to Dave Caspar was another. That led to a rule change.
― earlnash, Wednesday, 21 September 2022 01:24 (two years ago)
completely forgot the Stabler fumble. this thread will prob send me down a youtube hole of old Oilers footagei had an old roommate a few years back in the sf bay area. he was from Indiana, but became an Oilers fan in the 70’s when they wee terrible. he liked to root for underdogs and out his support behind the powder blue jerseys. he still had the “love ya blue” 7” at our place they we put on occasionally. terrible, terrible song
― sknybrg, Wednesday, 21 September 2022 01:46 (two years ago)
kind of amazes me how much of my youth watching the NFL had no instant replay. none from 1992 - 1998.
and I remember the one time I saw it used in 1991 before they scrapped it for six years, I told my grandpa "this is taking almost as long as an entire quarter", as they waited for the review ref to comment. in reality it was probably only two minutes long.

definitely seemed like a trend 10-15 years ago that teams would equate a "winning mentality" in a coach to "being as unforgiving an asshole as possible", which was funny because guys like Greg Schiano went 6-10 pretty much every year until they got fired. I wonder how much of that was because Bill Belichick came off that way.

it is true our situations were not totally similar re extent of damage, but they were not fucking around at all with the risk of a second impact. how nfl could allow that is a fucking crime to me now. (documentary _the crash reel_ covers this issue and a thousand other issues very very well).

Early season football is so shaky, it's kind of hard to tell who is really good until about Thanksgiving or so.
Buffalo looks a step above everyone. KC has a good pass rush and the best QB. Philly is pretty good, but their and the Giants schedule has so far been to advantage I think a bit.
You know Dallas will eventually get away from the ball control and defense as soon as Dak comes back and they will work their way to the middling.

I don't like to blame Rodgers when the team struggles but man he has looked so bad outside of the Bears game. Other than that their 2 wins are one where he nearly got outdueled by Bailey Zappe and the one vs. Brady where the announcers would go "well you would never expect THIS kind of game" after every commercial break. its not just that he's lost a step he's just indecisive and prone to making shitty throws. he's even chucking up some really bad picks which he never does. seems to really love eating the turf this year too. granted the OL and WR situations ain't the greatest but even still he just doesn't look right

There's something unsettling about watching Brady this year. If he wants to have his Jordan/Wizards phase fine but it's hard to watch knowing that he punted away his marriage to do it. This would be somewhat understandable if it was someone who still had something to prove, like say Rodgers, who still is sitting on only one Super Bowl appearance (plus he hates his family anyway). But Brady has won everything and outlasted everyone, he's arguably the only QB in NFL history for whom another Super Bowl win wouldn't really do anything for his legacy. Also he's kind of strange to look at now? On Sportscenter sometimes they show old clips of him from his first few years on the Pats and my brain does not register them as being the same person.

amazing the 32-year old Geno Smith has, somehow, become a top 5 QB statistically this year. he has the highest completion percentage in the whole league! dunno if that says more about him or the rest of the league though.
― frogbs, Wednesday, 26 October 2022 16:14 (two years ago)
Jordan was like this when he was the owner of the Wizards and playing simultaneously.
Rodgers needs to look at himself. Certainly the lack of receiver quality and drops don't help, not does weird play calling, but I've seen most Pack games this year and the phrase "what are you doing?" comes up a lot.
He looks like he honestly dngaf anymore
― stank viola (Neanderthal), Wednesday, 26 October 2022 16:18 (two years ago)
I think he just wants to become a podcaster
― Blues Guitar Solo Heatmap (Free Download) (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Wednesday, 26 October 2022 16:20 (two years ago)
i've read experts before who swore Geno Smith was a lot better than he'd been showing. Maybe he just needed a shot.
Jordan was a prick but he was more a motivational bully vs being a passive aggressive bastard.
― omar little, Wednesday, 26 October 2022 16:23 (two years ago)
feel like Jordan came at you in practice, not in the media? though but that might not be accurate
― Blues Guitar Solo Heatmap (Free Download) (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Wednesday, 26 October 2022 16:53 (two years ago)
yea the nice thing about having Rodgers as your QB is you very rarely have to wonder that. this year though he's made a lot of baffling decisions where he's just thrown to no one in particular like he's Mark Sanchez or something. usually to pick him off you need a lucky bounce or for someone to fall down but this year he's just doing a lot of chucking. he is also missing receivers by like 5 yards on his deep throws. it's weird because this stuff used to be so automatic for him.
― frogbs, Wednesday, 26 October 2022 17:59 (two years ago)
i feel like brees and brady and manning have given us unrealistic expectations about qbs just magically performing at a super high level at 40 and beyond, i think aging is just catching up w/rodgers
― Blues Guitar Solo Heatmap (Free Download) (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Thursday, 27 October 2022 21:07 (two years ago)
well, Manning was what, 39 in his final season? Brees, 40? and they both quickly became very bad. Rodgers is 38. hmmmm.......
― frogbs, Thursday, 27 October 2022 21:10 (two years ago)
wilson shot off 2500' cliff at 33, still plummeting. he will land on a pile of a quarter bil $ after a fall of approx 2.5 ft
― i'm right back on my shit (Hunt3r), Thursday, 27 October 2022 22:30 (two years ago)
peyton was MVP at 37 and absolute garbage at 39 (if not quite so bad that he could prevent them winning a super bowl). it happens fast
being able to evade/shrug off tacklers was a huge part of wilson's (and rofflesberger's, for that matter) game -- and something that's likely to disappear even more quickly than arm strength
roffles' entire last two seasons were just endless five-yard outs/slants. tbf part of that was due to his having poor receivers and a deeply terrible o-line -- i understand rodgers is having the same issue, at least with the former -- but most of it was his due to his immobility
― mookieproof, Thursday, 27 October 2022 23:02 (two years ago)
Manning was so garbage in 2015 in ways that would have been bad in any earlier era, but in the era when anyone with a throwing arm and a teammate with hands could have 20-10 TD-INT numbers, that 9-17 line looks historically awful.
― omar little, Thursday, 27 October 2022 23:11 (two years ago)
Crazy thing about Brady of course is he’s looking washed but still not doing *bad*
― omar little, Thursday, 27 October 2022 23:12 (two years ago)
brady honestly doesn't look that bad to me. it's just hard to compete with zero mobility in today's nfl.
his numbers also look way better if mike evans doesn't drop a 75 yard td last week
― comedy khadafi (voodoo chili), Thursday, 27 October 2022 23:19 (two years ago)
all of his receivers are finally healthy and he gets to face the ravens' atrocious pass d this weekend...
― comedy khadafi (voodoo chili), Thursday, 27 October 2022 23:21 (two years ago)
*tonight, not this weekend lol
I’m convinced it’s more a team thing than a Brady thing, he just doesn’t look like mr 45 TD anymore, which is to say washed compared to his prior peaks, but many thought he was done a decade ago so who knows?
― omar little, Thursday, 27 October 2022 23:29 (two years ago)
Oh well I guess I didn’t actually see he’s projected for 4700 yds and a 19/2 TD/INT ratio so he’s better than I thought this year. Curious to see about tonight yeah.
― omar little, Thursday, 27 October 2022 23:31 (two years ago)
the 3-4 Falcons are now first place in the NFC South
― frogbs, Friday, 28 October 2022 03:28 (two years ago)
probably not brady's fault that the bucs had 44 rushing yards and the ravens had 231
― mookieproof, Friday, 28 October 2022 03:56 (two years ago)
ditto for Rodgers, he's not quite as elusive but he might be the best QB of all time at throwing on the run and making the right pass with a millisecond to spare. he's not really hitting those anymore and he also has this careerlong problem of fumbling a lot when he gets hit
― frogbs, Friday, 28 October 2022 04:00 (two years ago)
just so much of it relies on the offensive line

I figure with TB12's current situation, he probably will continue playing even after this year in an attempt to change his fortunes. Dude looks weird though to me, I think he's using alot of botox or something.
I have to think like Dorian Gray there is some first year Fathead of TB12 that is slowly aging in some lost bedroom in New England and this week a tear was going down it's cheek.
TB12 and ARodg are going through these dad divorcee/single at 40 doldrums and the Manning brothers are eating cheeseburgers with Bill Murray and hosting game shows and getting paid to watch games in their man caves. Who's a winner now boyos?

F' abunch of overpaid coaches trying to make their job seems like they are brain surgeons or something.
How much coaching experience did Steve Kerr have before he took over and led a dynasty? NONE.
Any coach coming off the street is going to be in the same boat whether or not they coached years or not - they got to run what they got.
Dude got way more experience as a player than Bill F'n Cower and was a union rep and a football talking head. I don't doubt that Saturday would have to game up to take on a such a job full time, but to say the guy has NO experience is BS.
― earlnash, Sunday, 13 November 2022 23:13 (two years ago)

he seems to be throwing where his guys are instead of where they're going to be, so his WRs have to suddenly twist their bodies and can't catch the ball. so weird to see him scramble around on these make-or-break 3rd & 7s and then chuck the ball to absolutely nobody. he's not even coming close on some of these.
two more TDs for Christian Watson though, which gives him the most for a Packers rookie in the last 40 years. he had 0 coming into last week. so I guess that's a positive.
also Tennessee ran a really cool trick play at the goal line with Henry...never actually seen anything like this before

― Fash Gordon (Neanderthal), Thursday, 24 November 2022 20:48 (two years ago)
I mean sure but that was a hell of a throw. He’s clearly hurt
Goff had #84 wide open on that 3rd and 1 to win it. He just didn’t see it. Too bad would’ve been super cool for the Lions to go on a run here
― frogbs, Thursday, 24 November 2022 20:51 (two years ago)
they mismanaged that whole drive. wasted a lot of time, so they only had one real deep shot that could get them anywhere near a touchdown. it seemed like they were content going to OT. then forgot they actually had to play defense for 20 seconds. how does someone get that wide open when you're dropping back that far.
I don't see rationally with division rivals, I see blood red. Miami gonna have to win Sunday to keep first by tiebreaker.
apparently Houston starting Kyle Allen instead of Davis Mills!

Dear Giants,
If it is 4th and 1 - RUN THE BALL.
Your best player is Barkley, use him.
Earl.
― earlnash, Friday, 25 November 2022 00:25 (two years ago)
I just cannot figure out how freaking soft NFL defenses have become that any lead with 20 seconds on a kickoff without some crazy long return is not safe.
Dallas' O-line is still playing dumb as a doorknobs. For as a big a road graters they have, they are still kings of the dumb bad false start and holding penalties.
― earlnash, Friday, 25 November 2022 00:27 (two years ago)
this is also the second time in two games that someone let the Bills do that. ffs I know you can't just rush one person, drop everyone back 20 yards and 'keep it all in front of you' when defending against a field goal, but like you can still play to contain the pass without blitzing and selling out your second line.
this time around they had timeouts which helped because they could use the entire field, but it's not like you don't literally practice THESE SCENARIOS DURING THE WEEK
― Fash Gordon (Neanderthal), Friday, 25 November 2022 00:31 (two years ago)
I guess some of that is the Bills getting some return mojo for blowing a game with 13 seconds last year in the playoffs. Some of that is that they have to play so hands off anymore that if they breathe too hard on the receiver it is a penalty.
― earlnash, Friday, 25 November 2022 00:40 (two years ago)
there is that, yeah.
I was more annoyed that the Lions put themselves in that position to begin with. letting time tick off the clock, zero urgency, practically settling for the field goal even before Goff missed on that 3rd and 1. and honestly there it might have just been better to get the first down, call timeout, so you can take a few shots at end zone rather than just one.
their defense is the worst in the league, they're playing the Bills, they leave them 20 seconds and go "how bad could it be?" lol.
― Fash Gordon (Neanderthal), Friday, 25 November 2022 00:41 (two years ago)
a few things about this season...
1) having an odd number of games is literally the dumbest thing, no other major American sport does it. soccer leagues don't do it. having an uneven amount of home and away games makes no sense. they should have either added two, or just kept it at 16.
2) shit like the Bucs being 5-5 and in first place and the 7-9 Seahawks getting in a few years ago makes me wish we just reduced to two divisions. the four divisions are just dumb at this point.
3) the parity this year reminds me of the early 2000s.

Bengals shut down Travis Henry to 38 yards on 17 carries. That will work.

Russell has to currently be on pace to be one of the worst free agency signings ever. If he fixes things next year then ok but it's shocking how bad he's fallen off

My grandpa, mostly. He moved down to FL in the 70s, before the Bucs existed, and he became a Fins fan. And then I took an interest in watching with him
It's funny cos then everyone assumes I like the Heat, the Hurricanes, the Marlins, lol fuck those teams. Dolphins my only Miami team of rooting interest

the vikings have the 7th highest winning percentage of all nfl franchises, it's not a lions thing - it's the build up/crushing disappointment that gets you, they have generally been good teams that's the problem.

Still a while to go, but I got to think Jalen Hurts might be my MVP choice. I got to say, it has to be just a matter of time until he gets hurt as he is a bit fearless running the ball.
Eagles are looking pretty tough now, but I think they came out of today a bit more banged up.
Lot more football to go before the playoffs though. Same thing with the Bengals, they are looking pretty good right now too in all facets. That Perine is a banger. Their skills players are so deep and talented.

next year seems like it could be a big one for Detroit. idk if they're gonna stick with Goff but they've got something cool brewing there, as always the big thing is they need to learn how to stop shooting themselves in the foot
amusing how Green Bay was the odds on favorite to win the NFC North this year, and had they not completed the 2nd half comeback they'd be sitting in last place. obviously Rodgers is not playing all that well (in part due to injury) but also this defense is giving up an insane amount of yards, particularly on the ground. it's crazy how despite having multiple head coaches, DCs, and entire defenses the team can still have the same problem year in and year out.
― frogbs, Monday, 5 December 2022 18:03 (two years ago)
i was excited to watch the jets play meaningful december football, but the downside is a crushing loss like yesterday's. they let the vikes convert third down after third down in the first half and put themselves in a 17 point hole. they were so close to getting out of it!
mike white looks good but idk if having him throw it 57 times is ideal. hopefully they can recreate their magic against the bills next week.
― comedy khadafi (voodoo chili), Monday, 5 December 2022 18:07 (two years ago)

lions (5-7) are two-point favorites vs the vikings (10-2) this weekend, which is interesting
― mookieproof, Thursday, 8 December 2022 15:32 (two years ago)
historically, we've had some real duds playing on the road in detroit even in really shitty years for them. also, the teams are on the opposite side of the same coin, the vikings always able to pull victory out of the jaws of defeat and the lions pulling defeat out of the jaws of victory.
but it does feel strange given the record. also, you'd have to be a complete degenerate or masochist to bet on vikings games this year.
― Blues Guitar Solo Heatmap (Free Download) (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Thursday, 8 December 2022 21:09 (two years ago)

Lions are 8-4 on the spread this year, so they have been a degenerates friend this year.
― earlnash, Thursday, 8 December 2022 22:48 (two years ago)
i don't think it's crazy -- lions have won four of five and the loss was by three to the bills. and thanks to that cowboys blowout of the vikings, the lions' point differential is only 19 worse than minnesota's. but it is a little odd
― mookieproof, Friday, 9 December 2022 00:32 (two years ago)
Honestly it's likely a byproduct of being at home and tending to not get blown out even when they do lose, and having a really good offense.
Lions by 3 would technically be the "toss up" line since they're at home, so sounds like bettors are bearish on Detroit but not bullish enough on Minny to swing more points their way
― Fash Gordon (Neanderthal), Friday, 9 December 2022 00:39 (two years ago)

I don't think Mayfield will ever be great, but I think he got a bit of a raw deal in Cleveland and kind of paid for the disappointment of 2021. He played hurt a bunch when probably should not have been out there.
Playing for the Browns, they were on TV around here quite a bit and he had some really good games if inconsistent. It probably did not help that OBJ went into full TO Diva mode and seemed to be blaming him for everything.
Got a feeling he will hang around a good while as a backup, if nothing else.
Hey Jim Plunkett was a first pick bust until he won 2 Superbowls after coming off the bench for the Raiders, so it's not impossible.

Not that it was incorrect but I'm going to stop cheering until five minutes after each play.

― frogbs, Sunday, 18 December 2022 04:39 (two years ago)
Kohou has committed more dumb P.I. calls than anybody on the team. He's a rookie on a depleted squad so I can't hate too much.
I want our coordinator gone. We don't exactly have a top tier defense but it plays well below their abilities.
― Fash Gordon (Neanderthal), Sunday, 18 December 2022 04:46 (two years ago)
Wow @ this Bucs 3rd quarter. Actually somehow worse than that Vikings 1st half

LMAOOOO the final play in the Pats/Raiders game
― frogbs, Monday, 19 December 2022 00:31 (two years ago)
NFL is a sad, destructive world - but gd it can be so weirdly entertaining. Last weekend was one of the most batsh1t crazy weekends of football I can remember. There was like a season of weird stuff in games in like a week.
One thing I do think, I kinda think the Giants should stick with Daniel Jones for a bit longer. He's not great or anything, but he really does not suck either. I kinda think he reminds me quite a bit of Alex Smith and if you compare their numbers, they are actually closer than you might think. I'd keep him on a cheap deal and then try to improve the offense around him.

― frogbs, Sunday, 25 December 2022 13:46 (two years ago)
reminds me of the early 2000s where it was one or two great teams and a bunch of inconsistent ones.
I kind of want to see a defensive renaissance in the NFL, not that I want to see offenses struggle like they did in the dire early 2000s, where you ran 40-50 times a game and gashed bad run defenses while your QB was a 'game manager', but I wouldn't mind seeing more true shutdown defenses emerge again, even as hard as it is in this era. "bend but don't break" has been the law of the land for about ten years.

ultimately though, my controversial opinion is that letting the Packers start the first drive from our 9 and second from their 45 might be a bad special teams strategy.

it's clear Miami needs to blitz Rodgers but carefully. no 'sending the house', and all of them have risks. CB blitz = if you don't disguise it well, Rodgers will just make a quick throw and get the first, LB blitz = if you don't get there, he'll take off and have space to run in.

It is so Detroit Lions that they get the path to the playoffs and they lay an egg against the Panthers.
Obvious Carolina is playing hard but the Lions got to be the Lions.
I’m sure JJ Watt probably likes the Arizona weather better but I bet he really wishes he would have taken that deal to go to Buffalo instead of going to the Cards.

― Blues Guitar Solo Heatmap (Free Download) (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Tuesday, 27 December 2022 14:38 (two years ago)
this one is more baffling because, unlike the Bills game, nobody seemed to notice the offending play, not the broadcasters, fans, the spotters, the team doctor, the independent neurologist, or any symptoms after said play. and yet....for the latter three roles, that's literally their job.
and it isn't that they saw a replay of his head hitting turf later on and are being precautious now, article says he has actual concussion symptoms.
unless the doctors are just being really conservative here, they need to just shut him down for the year.
― Fash Gordon (Neanderthal), Tuesday, 27 December 2022 14:45 (two years ago)
I mean if they didn't after getting knocked out two games in a row I don't expect them to now. they'll probably let Tua rest this week but if the playoffs are on the line he'll be out there. good news for the Fins is they actually have one of the better backups in the league with Bridgewater and both their remaining games are vs. broken teams as well

Hackett will have a job somewhere. No doubt that some college coach would love him to be o-coordinator, if he wanted to get into that racket. They love to be able to say recruits - this guy worked with Aaron Rodgers.
Matt Rhule literally went from a laughing stock in the NFL to getting paid fat money @ Nebraska as they are so desperate for it to matter again. What a bunch of maroons. Dude was so bad, he left they traded their best players and then they almost might make the playoffs AND his backup QB has embarrassed two teams getting hired off the street.
― earlnash, Wednesday, 28 December 2022 22:41 (two years ago)

amazing how national football league players in the national football league are the hardest of warriors, the real troops, but are so unmanned by 'distraction(s)' that the raiders have to physically send derek carr away from the team

Just leave, baby
― Fash Gordon (Neanderthal), Friday, 30 December 2022 17:44 (two years ago)
feel like I say this every year but there seems to be a much higher than usual percentage of teams that are just total dumpster fires this season. Broncos and Raiders both made big moves during the offseason to win now and have wound up a combined 10-20 with both fanbases calling for the QB's head. Texans and Colts are both god awful and seem to have no plan to get better in the near future. the Packers look the worst they have since Rodgers took over and Brady's Bucs have one of the worst offenses in the league (though it's possible both make the playoffs). the Rams have fallen apart in a way no Super Bowl winner ever has in NFL history. the Cardinals and Falcons both look completely lost. the Bears have a young QB who looks like a phenom but they've still lost 8 straight games.
it's not just the losing teams either. only 11 of the NFL's 32 teams have a positive point differential. 2 of those 11 have a positive differential of less than a touchdown (including the 12-3 Minnesota Vikings). just weird shit all around
― frogbs, Friday, 30 December 2022 17:49 (two years ago)
Years like this are always possible due to the restrictive hard cap and the high likelihood of QB injuries, I just think some years the league gets lucky and some it doesn't.
It is fairly ridiculous that my Fins could lose for the fifth straight game on Sunday and still clinch the 7th seed by beating the Jets the next week
― Fash Gordon (Neanderthal), Friday, 30 December 2022 17:56 (two years ago)
Jags are a pleasant surprise.
― immodesty blaise (jimbeaux), Friday, 30 December 2022 17:57 (two years ago)
I also think the degradation of defensive units don't help. Teams accepted that they no longer need dominant defenses to win Super Bowls, so they've allowed holes in some areas of the unit so that they can strengthen their offense.
Even the best units don't completely obliterate teams like the 2000 Ravens or the 2002 Bucs, due to all of the offense-happy rule enforcement shifts.
Mediocre defenses, you often can't trust to close out close games late.
The point differential thing w the Vikings and others is truly bizarre, really illustrates the volatility of some teams' performance.
― Fash Gordon (Neanderthal), Friday, 30 December 2022 18:07 (two years ago)
One thing I will say is the Vikings have certainly had luck but have also made an incredible number of incredibly clutch plays in crucial moments and are also riding Justin Jefferson who is putting on a historic run right now so it's not like they just slipped and fell and ended up 12-3
― Blues Guitar Solo Heatmap (Free Download) (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Friday, 30 December 2022 18:15 (two years ago)
Also in interviews they just think they can win now no matter what, that sort of irrational self belief is important in sports
― Blues Guitar Solo Heatmap (Free Download) (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Friday, 30 December 2022 18:16 (two years ago)
whereas my team makes the least sense, a largely unchanged defensive unit that added Bradley Chubb is now terrible, Xavien Howard is also bad and somehow inexplicably made the Pro Bowl, which even he himself questioned, we have a QB that's only been sacked 21 times this year, but has suffered a head injury on 3 of those sacks (14% of them!), and we've had both a three game AND a four game losing streak this year and are still possibly going to make the playoffs.
plus two receivers over 1,000 yards, and yet the offense has been stalled for a month.

well yeah, they're arguably one of the most clutch teams in NFL history. there are obviously a lot of decent arguments against using Pythag record as a true indicator of a team's skill and I think they pretty much all apply to the Vikings. on the other hand they do look pretty terrible for long stretches and I can see a team like the 49ers or Eagles whipping the tar outta them in the playoffs. you know like the Colts did
― frogbs, Friday, 30 December 2022 18:52 (two years ago)
i'm not worried about the vikings getting smoked by the eagles or niners -- no shame in that
i'm worried about them falling out of a bye position and then getting to host green bay two weeks from now. no matter how bad the packers are or how washed rodgers is, that's nightmare material
― mookieproof, Friday, 30 December 2022 19:10 (two years ago)
people assume Rodgers would show up in a big game like that but the truth is he really doesn't
― frogbs, Friday, 30 December 2022 19:39 (two years ago)
yes but there would be no pressure at all on him in such a situation and also the vikings are possibly cursed
― mookieproof, Friday, 30 December 2022 20:16 (two years ago)
Yeah they are totally playing with fire and agree they are not on the level of the Eagles or 49ers. They could get smoked by them easy, or pull another rabbit out of the hat, impossible to predict anything other than Jefferson is a problem
I'm completely at ease this season, the definition of playing with the house's money. I had them at 8/9 wins in preseason
― Blues Guitar Solo Heatmap (Free Download) (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Friday, 30 December 2022 20:18 (two years ago)
Jags got a bit of a schedule benefit and while their defense is pretty middling, they have had some talent on that side of the ball for a couple of years. I think they hiring a decent coach did not hurt.
I think the Cowboys thought they were losing to Peterson and the Eagles with the Jags wearing all that green and black a couple weeks ago.
Raiders cutting bait on Derek Carr and sticking with McD probably won't look too smart in a few months. But hey, Carr deserves a chance to go 'somewhere' better than playing for the nutball Raiders, although it seems cruel for him to go to the Jets no matter their better roster.
― earlnash, Friday, 30 December 2022 23:10 (two years ago)

so ron rivera didn't know his team could be eliminated with a loss (which they were, when the packers later won). but that's okay, because he was so singularly focused on winning that he couldn't take 10 seconds to find out what it would require for his team to make the playoffs. so singularly focused on winning that he let carson wentz go 16-28 for 143 yards and 3 picks. so singularly focused that he has three winning seasons in his 12 as an NFL head coach. wait, the NFL has ties? never knew; i was too focused on winning
football guys: so focused on winning that it's a real challenge to get dressed in the morning
Not sure what the issue is. Only thing that matters is winning. Pretty safe to assume Ron Rivera was singularly focused on that, rather than what would happen if they lost. https://t.co/seR9pCXvbU— Ian Rapoport (@RapSheet) January 1, 2023

coaches and players forced the nfl’s hand here
Per Joe Buck, once officials gave each team 5 minutes to warm up before resuming play, Bengals head coach Zac Taylor walked across the field and consulted Bills HC Sean McDermott. Both coaches then sent their teams to their respective locker rooms. Such a classy move by Taylor.— Paxton Boyd (@paxton) January 3, 2023

Ryan Clark doing a pretty amazing job right now on ESPN
― frogbs, Tuesday, 3 January 2023 03:58 (two years ago)
no official diagnosis but many cardiologists and arrhythmia specialists theorizing "commotio cordis" which would not have been from existing heart issue, but a hit in the chest just above the heart at just the right time (the same thing that often results in a handful of youth baseball deaths per year). the type of thing where it doesn't matter how healthy you are before it happens.
yeah the Ryan Clark speech was great, much better than what that POS Skip Bayless said (which I won't post)
― Fash Gordon (Neanderthal), Tuesday, 3 January 2023 04:11 (two years ago)
yeah sounds like a real freak injury but I've heard it speculated numerous times that this sort of thing could happen in the NFL. between this and what's been happening with Tua I wonder if there might be a wave of surprising retirements this offseason
― frogbs, Tuesday, 3 January 2023 04:13 (two years ago)
this is definitely the bleakest season I can recall for the league in recent memory. true, there have been horrific moments a plenty in the NFL's history, but the combination of the omnipresence of the NFL media empire, combined with the fresh medical insights we now have that we didn't have 40 years ago (or arguably even 20 years ago) as to what the game is doing to the young players who play it, make these things that maybe we shrugged off a lot tougher to watch. and with that, it's hard not to recoil with horror when we see it with Tua, and now with Damar Hamlin.

― frogbs, Monday, January 2, 2023 11:13 PM (yesterday) bookmarkflaglink
if it's actually the commotio cordis thing it sounds like it's more likely to happen in organized baseball than football, either way cardiac stuff can happen in any sport and while i have no affection for the nfl i'm going to wait and see before i decide if there's anything specific to football that caused this awful situation
― call all destroyer, Tuesday, 3 January 2023 05:06 (two years ago)
someone upthread asked what happened and there was never really an answer ... w/r/t commotio cordis, it was definitely a routine tackle, but Hamlin took a hard lowered shoulder straight to the chest. Backing up, Higging caught the ball going over the middle, turned upfield, and Hamlin met him squarely. Again ... pretty routine. We have all see what appear to be *much* harder hits to the head, hits to receivers catching and turning.
I don't know jack, obviously, but between where he took the hit and an explanation I just watched, it certainly seems reasonable that this is that commotio cordis thing.

Logically you're right but the NFL, and football in general, has such a fucked up attitude towards injury; it's "part of the game" in a way you don't see in other sports (except maybe hockey??). It's the one sport where every player who isn't a kicker can expect to sustain several serious injuries and a huge part of football culture revolves around toughening up and playing through the pain. Even after all we know about CTE, even after Aaron Hernandez and the various suicides we still have teams willing to put guys out there a week after sustaining a traumatic brain injury. It's part of the sport. NFL careers are notoriously short (3 years on average!) and you don't have guaranteed contracts like you do in other sports. FOX Sports even has its own injury timeout music! So yeah, maybe it's a fluke, but it's also woven into the fabric of the NFL; players get hurt all the time. You have to deal with it. Ryan Clark talked about this a ton on ESPN last night, you're conditioned to be tough and to believe in a culture of "next man up" but at the end of the day these guys are like a makeshift family and it really messes you up to see them carried off on a stretcher. What happened here is way beyond that; I mean god, I hope he's okay somehow, but truthfully these guys are probably gonna wind up with PTSD from this, and idk how easy it would be to separate this from just the standard brutality of football.
― frogbs, Tuesday, 3 January 2023 14:39 (two years ago)
in a way you don't see in other sports (except maybe hockey??)
as a minnesotan let me assure you hockey is every bit as bad if not worse in terms of culture and literally everything than the NFL the only reason it doesn't get singled out is that it's a niche sport.

I kept thinking back to the Hank Gathers situation in NCAA basketball in the 90s. different thing (known heart issue, he stopped taking the meds), but he literally died on the court and then they cancelled the rest of the conference tournament, but his teammates had to play in the NCAA tournament not long afterwards, and I can't imagine how they did it. apparently the first practice afterwards was rough
different scenario, but one of the scarier on-court/field incidents I can remember.
― Fash Gordon (Neanderthal), Tuesday, 3 January 2023 14:55 (two years ago)
ums otm. as a child i saw an extremely awful & gory thing happen to an NHL goaltender and flashed on it immediately when seeing this last night, and i'll never forget hearing the guy speak on it years later and say that while he was laying on the ice fully expecting to die the only thing he was thinking was the deeply-ingrained reflex that he needed to get back up and show everyone that he was tough and could still play through it
― waste of compute (One Eye Open), Tuesday, 3 January 2023 15:14 (two years ago)
I guess there's one pretty close analogue - Chris Pronger in 1998, who got hit by a slapshot right above the chest, took a couple of steps, and then suddenly collapsed. the good news is he was okay and even wound up playing a few days later but he also didn't receive 9 minutes of CPR.

― frogbs, Thursday, 5 January 2023 03:42 (two years ago)
because of the word "gory" i assume (perhaps wrongly) OEO is talking about Clint Malarchuk, the hockey goalie who took a skate blade to the neck, slicing through his carotid artery and nicking his jugular vein. i remember that one well, but didn't know this detail from Wikipedia:
The excessive amount of blood that Malarchuk lost caused eleven fans to faint, two more to have heart attacks, and three players to vomit on the ice.
!!
― alpine static, Thursday, 5 January 2023 23:45 (two years ago)
the clint malarchuk thing was insane. only thing even close that i can recall was when mark howe (son of gordie, hall of famer in his own right) was literally impaled on a goal's metal rod
Worst Injury: "I was playing in Hartford and I got skewered on the net. Yeah, so if you look at it in hindsight, I am very fortunate I'm still able to walk. The center point of the net pierced my rectal area and went in about five to five-and-a-half inches and actually had cut out on the other side. So I actually kind of had a hole almost all the way through my body. I lost five pints of blood and was pretty well in bed for four weeks because I ended up with a really bad infection. So I guess I've had other injuries that were probably more painful, but this one here because I lost so much blood. Shock set in. Some of the pain goes away, but it was very, very fearful. I remember laying on the ice and I knew kind of what had happened. And my instincts were, I thought I was going to die. I remember looking up and Nicky Fotiu was looking over me as my teammate. I mean, just the look in his eyes scared the hell out of me."
― mookieproof, Friday, 6 January 2023 00:49 (two years ago)
Yeah alpine static it was malarchuk. I didn’t know any of that wiki stuff either, but I remember there still being blood all in the crease while the backup goalie came out and played out the rest of the game, which was v disturbing

― fentanyl young (Neanderthal), Monday, 9 January 2023 16:09 (two years ago)
Like I said before it did seem like the Texans would fight to the end in a lot of those games I suspect because they were reasonably well coached despite being devoid of talent. Honestly lovie got so much out of mediocre Bears teams, he deserves a shot with someone else ASAP.
― omar little, Monday, 9 January 2023 16:19 (two years ago)
still in disbelief at the Quay Walker thing, all I can think is maybe he was seeing red and thought it was one of the Lions players who (lightly) shoved him, fucking wild that might have actually cost his team a playoff spot
that said this Packers team was no fun at all and I'm kinda relieved I don't have to watch them get the shit kicked out of them by the 49ers again. there's a chance that Rodgers just had a bad season due to injuries & a young receiver core which (lets face it) did him no favors but it's much more likely that he's just washed. I don't have much hope for Jordan Love but his contract is up next year and it would be really irritating if Rodgers came back and we never got to see if he was any good or not. either way pretty pathetic ending for the guy who's probably gonna go down in history as "the best regular season quarterback of all time"
― frogbs, Monday, 9 January 2023 16:21 (two years ago)
I gotta say, it was pretty nice to see the Lions pull that out. They might be a team to watch next year. (I say this as someone originally from Detroit who has heard that refrain over five decades.)
― immodesty blaise (jimbeaux), Monday, 9 January 2023 16:35 (two years ago)
yeah them and the Jags seem like teams to watch next year. what made them so fun to watch is they approached every game with a "fuck it" sort of mentality and so they did all sorts of crazy things in critical spots, including late in the 4th during last night's game. I wonder how much conservative they're gonna get next year now that they appear to be pretty legit. either way they seem to be set up pretty well, they still have one more 1st rounder from the Stafford trade and since the Rams did so poorly it'll be a good pick. wonder what they're gonna do at QB.
― frogbs, Monday, 9 January 2023 18:09 (two years ago)
I love watching the Jags, but they did their best to lose Saturday night's game.
― immodesty blaise (jimbeaux), Monday, 9 January 2023 18:12 (two years ago)
lions do feel different this time. the best players on their defense are all rookies, so they're bound to improve next year. offense has lots of young playmakers too, with a great line. i think the biggest impediment will be goff, and whether he can elevate his game enough on the road and in bad weather. he did play well in the second half last night.
― sault bae (voodoo chili), Monday, 9 January 2023 18:13 (two years ago)
jags, i think, have an opposite situation - lawrence is gonna be great but the playmakers/o-line are just ok, which could limit the offensive ceiling. lots of money tied up in engram and kirk, who are fine but not special.

― Blues Guitar Solo Heatmap (Free Download) (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Monday, 9 January 2023 18:18 (two years ago)
Lions showed exponential growth throughout the season, like when Miami played them, they had a shit record, moved the ball very well, but couldn't defend for shit.
But they went on a hell of a run to end the year and the defense improved. Could be a preview of even better things to come
― fentanyl young (Neanderthal), Monday, 9 January 2023 18:18 (two years ago)
Was thinking: has any athlete ever damaged their public image/popularity more than Aaron Rodgers without really doing anything substantially terrible?
I'm thinking of Ray Rice, Vick, incidents like that. Rodgers just started acting like the world's biggest douche but it's not like he killed anyone.
― Blues Guitar Solo Heatmap (Free Download) (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Monday, 9 January 2023 18:21 (two years ago)
Like you can tell even State Farm is phasing him out with Mahomes and the jazz bath guy
He's always been basically unlikeable. I've known a couple of his teammates and the best they can manage is to say nothing bad.
― immodesty blaise (jimbeaux), Monday, 9 January 2023 18:25 (two years ago)
Rodgers did a lot of work to stage manage his persona, doing all those annoying Discount Double Check commercials that made him look like a corny goofball, and avoiding stepping in it in the press, so people kinda ignored the weirdness of his sudden estrangement from his family.
Lying about being immunized and becoming nu-Rogan, while his play on the field degraded just about eroded that goodwill and had people suspecting the family estrangement was due to his own pettiness.
― fentanyl young (Neanderthal), Monday, 9 January 2023 18:39 (two years ago)
he was so consistently great that it was kinda hard to talk any smack about him, and I think up until Covid he did a really good job of just keeping his mouth shut when it came to the media. but yeah there were a lot of signs there. when his brother wound up on The Bachelorette (and won!) there was this weird situation because it came out that he just straight up wouldn't talk to his family anymore but couldn't provide a good reason why. after Greg Jennings left for Minnesota he didn't hold back calling the guy an asshole. then there was that big expose after McCarthy got canned which made him seem like a total diva who held onto grudges forever. Rodgers would get asked about this stuff a lot and it was pretty clear by his cagey and defensive responses that he was almost certainly the guy to blame.
for me I kinda thought something was up in like...2012. back then he used to do that "championship belt" celebration that Fred-Ex used to do on the Eagles but then he suddenly stopped. apparently it was because someone from another team picked him off and did the belt to mock him and I guess that pissed him off so much that he stopped doing it altogether. to me that sorta cemented him as one of those guys who liked to talk shit but couldn't take it in return.
― frogbs, Monday, 9 January 2023 18:50 (two years ago)
yeah his play was otherworldly, which had something to do with it. during his Super Bowl win, we temporarily changed the board description to "gay for Aaron Rodgers" lol
― fentanyl young (Neanderthal), Monday, 9 January 2023 18:56 (two years ago)
I think we’ve grown so used to more demonstratively weird, awkward, shitty NFL guys (many of them QBs) that Rodgers being quietly all three was easy to overlook.
― omar little, Monday, 9 January 2023 18:59 (two years ago)
yeah, so many NFL players are pieces of shit so it's almost like you have to be a standout among assholes to earn people's ire.
― fentanyl young (Neanderthal), Monday, 9 January 2023 19:13 (two years ago)
one thing with Rodgers is it actually did affect his play, for example last year's playoff game vs. the 49ers where Lewis fumbled and Rodgers basically threw to no one besides Davante Adams & Aaron Jones the rest of the game (while Lazard and Lewis were so wide open they were practically doing cartwheels). the SI article about him said he would do exactly this, which is funny cuz Rodgers basically denied the entire thing as a completely fabricated hit piece
― frogbs, Monday, 9 January 2023 19:42 (two years ago)
maybe LeBron, who everyone seemed to be rooting for in Cleveland until he suddenly became a supervillain thanks to that dumb televised special where he announced he was going to Miami. granted that was just for basketball reasons and he redeemed himself quite nicely by ACTUALLY winning a title in Cleveland a while later. but yea losing those finals to the Mavs was a real "HAHAHA EAT SHIT" moment on par with what happened last night I imagine

Being a fan from him at UK, it was good to see the "other" Josh Allen make some big plays for the Jags against Tennessee. He is a defensive player that seems to have a knack for making the big play at key moments on defense. He was a beast at Kentucky especially his senior year.

Season was good this year but had more fun last year. Being a Rams fan that makes sense. Not going to watch all six games but these 49ers do intrege me this year, Bulls too. Don't want the Cowboys or the Chiefs in the Super Bowl.

Bills played stupid, really deserved to lose. Miami's defense came to play. Too bad Miami's WR had the dropsies today, they had a real chance to win.
After watching the Giants a few times this year, I have kinda turned the corner on Daniel Jones. He reminds me a bunch of Alex Smith, which for a ball control/defense grinder team like NYG- seems to be a guy that could be their QB.

yeah that would be a really fun one. would be such a bonkers atmosphere. also fuck Nick Bosa. but I also kinda want to see how far this Brock Purdy thing goes. yesterday someone on ESPN was saying "if the 49ers make it to the Super Bowl, do you stick with Purdy" and its like uhh...yes? I mean it's nearly a full seasons worth of games and their offense has been markedly better with him. definitely doesn't appear to just be a "well he's not fucking up" thing

Bengals defense is looking really good. That D-line is tough and they got good cornerbacks. It's the most loaded Bengals team ever, they really don't have a lot missing at all now. Mixon being hurt got Perine some more playing time and that dude is just hard to get down, so now they have a two headed running attack they did not have. They got two TEs that are credible. Their WRs are some of the best groups.
Cincy has had a few decades of misery with the Bengals and Reds, I really hope they don't let them down again.
Cowboys D played a good game, but it always comes down that Dallas will do dumb s&!t moves that blows the game. They had the Niners pinned twice and blew it with penalties that had nothing to do with what was going on. One of Dak's picks looked really bad, but the Niners were playing pretty bare knuckle.
It's like Diggs acting like an a$$ on the sideline, did he see Allen running for his life in the backfield? They would have sacked Bernie Kosar like 40 times yesterday as Allen did quite a bit of Houdini moves to escape defenders. Allen often did not have time to set up to thrown down field.
― earlnash, Monday, 23 January 2023 23:00 (two years ago)
Bengals O line was a real surprise, if they have one weakness it's Burrow getting sacked too much. three backups vs. a pretty good defense and they only got to him once. feels like the Chiefs are gonna have to score a lot to keep up.
― frogbs, Monday, 23 January 2023 23:09 (two years ago)
check this out from the official Cowboys account. trouble in paradise I guess
Dak Prescott gave away the ball twice in the narrow loss to the 49ers, in a matchup the Cowboys had a chance to win if they didn’t again generate self-inflicted wounds.#DALvsSF | #DallasCowboys— Dallas Cowboys (@dallascowboys) January 23, 2023
49ers are just a remarkably tough team to stop, they always seem to do just enough to make life difficult. they are the king of those 9 minute drives with 6-7 first downs. not a lotta margin for error and the Cowboys are known for their errors

Like not saying Philly should feel bad about winning, this shit happens and it's not like they weren't the top seed all year. Enjoy the win!
But you're going to have a hard time winning if both your QBs suffer fairly severe injuries and one only returned cos otherwise the RB would be taking direct snaps all game
― I HAVE NO IDEA HOW THE DIAPER GOT LOOSE (Neanderthal), Sunday, 29 January 2023 23:28 (two years ago)

― Blues Guitar Solo Heatmap (Free Download) (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Monday, 30 January 2023 03:49 (two years ago)
I endorse it getting called all the time, guys have to know to be conservative about that kind of hit and that means sometimes you call it when they didn't mean to do it, they just didn't mean hard enough to avoid doing it
― Guayaquil (eephus!), Monday, 30 January 2023 04:00 (two years ago)
yeah I agree it needs to be called but still having it happen in that situation is just really unfortunate. if the Bangles can complain about anything it's the refs missing several blocks in the back during that big kickoff return at the end. oh well. Chiefs have really been laying out some brutal playoff losses lately. much more fun to watch them to it than Tom Brady.

it's just a shitty rule, the way the game is set up you can absolutely level a dude in one spot but if they're a couple feet over it's a penalty. you can destroy a QB or a kicker if the ball is in the process of being thrown or punted but a split second later it's a big foul. obviously this stuff is necessary but those automatic first down penalties can totally change the game and I feel like it's a big ask of the defense when half the QBs in the league happen to also be one of the fastest guys on the roster. sucks but that's how its gotta be I guess.
― frogbs, Monday, 30 January 2023 16:13 (two years ago)
there were a lot of ticky-tacky fouls on the bengals that erased huge plays in the 4th qtr. on the other hand the bengals had the chance to go down the field and win in the last two minutes, and their pass protection just couldn't stand up.
― symsymsym, Monday, 30 January 2023 16:17 (two years ago)
Hell of a game by Burrow though. He reminds me of Rodgers circa 2011. Even some of his incomplete passes were perfectly placed sideline throws. If they can get some pass protection that offense will be unstoppable.
― frogbs, Monday, 30 January 2023 16:23 (two years ago)
the hit out of bounds rule has to be enforced strictly to prevent any kind of extra curricular activity between players on the field and players on the sideline. not to mention that there are plenty of non-football obstacles on the sideline (ossai injured himself on that play when he slammed into a bench) and people on the sideline who aren’t wearing pads
― sault bae (voodoo chili), Monday, 30 January 2023 16:25 (two years ago)
nick bosa injured his leg just standing on the sideline during a punt return lol
― symsymsym, Monday, 30 January 2023 16:31 (two years ago)
yea it's a necessary rule, kinda reminds me of the balk in baseball, if you didn't enforce it you'd get some weird angle shots which I think go against the spirit of the game. but 95% of the time it's called it's done unintentionally. so it sucks but you gotta have it
― frogbs, Monday, 30 January 2023 16:40 (two years ago)
if it's necessary it's necessary what are we talking about? It sucks that the kid did that at that point but it's a good rule
― Blues Guitar Solo Heatmap (Free Download) (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Monday, 30 January 2023 16:52 (two years ago)
i thought from the initial angle that it was maybe a weirdly inadvertent shove as he was going past his other teammate would was just standing there on the sideline, but other angles reveal maybe not. gotta analyze it further, like the kobe/matt barnes inbounds pass video.

I think a rule can be necessary but also kind of arbitrary in a way that's bad for the sport. "he hit the QB half a second late" is not really a satisfying end to what was a pretty amazing title game

― frogbs, Monday, 30 January 2023 18:51 (two years ago)
roughing the passer penalties can be somewhat arbitrary -- what precisely counts as 'too late' or 'too rough' is a judgment call -- but that bengals penalty was perfectly straightforward. mahomes was out of bounds, and you can't hit a guy who's out of bounds, heading into people and equipment, and not expecting a hit, like that
'where do you draw the line?' right there, with white paint
― mookieproof, Monday, 30 January 2023 19:16 (two years ago)
The Mahomes call was fine; the lack of call on Burrow earlier sucked. Bad or missed calls weren't what lost the game for the Bengals. Even that weird clock situation didn't seem to really hurt them. Their offensive line just weren't up for it.
― beard papa, Monday, 30 January 2023 19:57 (two years ago)
I'm not arguing it should be called differently, just that as a neutral fan it sucks to see the game end that way. reminds me of NBA games where a jump shooter lands on the defender's foot and gets free throws + the tech, that rule has probably saved a few ACLs but it's a lame way to end a close game.
― frogbs, Monday, 30 January 2023 19:59 (two years ago)
I agree with that. Would have been cool to see the new play-off OT rules, too. I felt the longer that game went on, the less likely it was KC was going to score an offensive TD. They just couldn't seem to move the ball with Mahomes getting worse and losing a bunch of their receivers. If Butker had missed the 58 yard FG and it had gone into OT I think the Bengals win the game and it would have been epic to watch as a fan. (Plus, I had the Bengals -1 and the over in a play-off pool pick. If it had gone into OT, KC got the coin flip, Butker kicked a FG and then Cincinnati scores a TD... )
― beard papa, Monday, 30 January 2023 20:07 (two years ago)

The 39-year-old said last summer that he had taken part in ayahuasca ceremonies that can produce hallucinations similar to the drug dimethyltryptamine (DMT). He said the darkness retreat does not include the use of ayahuasca."It's just sitting in isolation, meditation, dealing with your thoughts," Rodgers said. "It stimulates DMT, so there can be some hallucinations in there but it's just kind of sitting in silence, which most of us never do. We rarely even turn our phone off or put the blinds down to sleep in darkness. I'm really looking forward to it."Rodgers said the retreat will be alone in the confines of a small house in an undisclosed location. He said meals are delivered, but otherwise there is no other contact with the outside world. However, he said he could leave at any point during the stay if he chose to do so.

The front featured an abstract depiction of Jesus' face and appears to reference a Bible verse that reads: "Without end or beginning there is no day and no night."Among the critics were former NFL running back Adrian Peterson, who referred to the jacket as "blasphemy" Monday.A day later, Peterson wrote in an Instagram post that he has since cleared the air with Hamlin."After speaking with Damar, I have an understanding that it didn't come from a place of ill intent," Peterson wrote. https://www.espn.com/nfl/story/_/id/35760585/warrants-arrest-jalen-carter-ex-georgia-star-nfl-draft-prospect
Former Georgia star Jalen Carter, one of the top prospects in next month's NFL draft, has been charged with reckless driving and racing in connection with a crash that killed a teammate and a recruiting staff member.
The Athens-Clarke County (Georgia) Police Department has issued an arrest warrant, obtained Wednesday by The Associated Press, which alleges Carter was racing his 2021 Jeep Trackhawk against the 2021 Ford Expedition driven by the recruiting staffer, 24-year-old Chandler LeCroy, which led to the Jan. 15 wreck.
The announcement came hours after The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reported that Carter was present at the scene of the crash and later provided shifting accounts of the wreck to police.
Devin Willock, who was an offensive lineman for the Bulldogs, and LeCroy were killed in what police initially reported as a single-vehicle accident.
Carter is in Indianapolis at the NFL scouting combine. He had been slated to speak to reporters as part of a previously scheduled media availability, but a league spokesperson later told reporters that Carter would not be speaking Wednesday because he and five other players were still conducting physicals.

look the Packers were set up insanely well to win multiple SBs after 2010, the fact that they never made it back is a remarkable failure. they should've done what the Chiefs are doing now (I will point out too that Mahomes is 27 now - same as Rodgers was when he won it all). they had one of the greatest offenses in NFL history and still found a way to lose to Eli Manning at home. they picked off Russell Wilson 5 times in an NFCCG and still lost it. yes a lot of this had more to do with McCarthy and the front office's baffling decision to never prioritize WRs, but after a while it became clear that Rodgers just did not deliver in big games. so many of his playoff wins were nailbiters in which he threw for like 250 yards and 2 TDs in the first half and then finished with like...320 yards and 2 TDs. and he lost a bunch of playoff games by just throwing to the same dude over and over again. two years ago Rodgers won MVP but wound up losing to Jimmy flippin' Garrapolol (who didn't throw a single TD!) because he would rather throw to a triple-covered Davante Adams than a wide open Lazard doing cartwheels in the end zone. he was just so fucking weird all the time, not in the Favre "maybe he's just not too bright" way, but like in the Dilbert dude way. he's just so unlikeable as a person. the vaccine thing really did rub a lot of people the wrong way...being an antivaxxer is one thing, but trying to deceive everyone and then whining when you get caught, it's like...come on man
actually I'm pretty sure people knew he was a giant weirdo for a while, at least starting when his brother got on the Bachelorette and it was revealed that Aaron actually cut his entire family out of his life for some reason. then that big SI expose comes out about him and McCarthy featuring all these very specific stories of him being a bad teammate and he just goes "nah, that's all fake" like he's Michael Jackson or something. all good as long as he's playing well right? well, this year he sucked. the one thing he always had was his accuracy and now he was bouncing footballs off defenders' helmets. he even did that thing you'd see with Mark Sanchez where he'd throw deep and it would fake out the cameraman because there would just be no one there. even still every single thing broke Green Bay's way and they actually had an opportunity to make it to the playoffs simply by beating a deflated Lions team with nothing to play for, AT HOME. once again he gets out there and chucks it around like he forgot the entire playbook. they could have salvaged the entire season!!! instead, game on the line, he chucks it deep where it's nothing but Detroit, and his last pass in GB goes down as a season ending interception
anyway, I don't think anyone's really convinced by Jordan Love, but who knows! there's like a 15% chance he's good! but hey, at best what you're getting with Rodgers at this point is another humiliating early playoff exit, so why not roll the dice??

ah yeah makes sense choking increasing weirdness and lack of focus thx
― lag∞n, Thursday, 16 March 2023 15:55 (two years ago)
as you point out there were earlier signs that he was a dumbass but i still cant believe that he went on podcasts just to reveal what a dodo he is, and hes still doing lmao he was on a podcast just yesterday whining about the media
― lag∞n, Thursday, 16 March 2023 15:58 (two years ago)
he had a real mystique for a while as the smart alt qb lol
― lag∞n, Thursday, 16 March 2023 16:03 (two years ago)
somehow podcasts are an even more absurd way to ruin your image than posting on social media which is how most athletes do it, like you cant even figure out how to post you need someone to ask you questions to fuck things up
― lag∞n, Thursday, 16 March 2023 16:11 (two years ago)
that SI story was pretty illuminating, just running through the gamut of ways Rodgers was weirdly petty and unforgiving. there's a bit in there about Rodgers telling the guys on the other team covering Greg Jennings "you should pick him up next year" since his contract was up. its a very specific thing and I think someone even found the video in the broadcast where it happens, and it would be so easy for him to just say "yeah I was joking around, of course we wanted to keep him" he just denies the whole thing happened and just goes "he hates me for no reason". very Trumpy behavior all around.

I know it's probably nothing but I always wondered what exactly it was that caused this guy to fall so far in the 2005 draft. I used to watch a bunch of the ESPN shows back then and I remember a lot of the talk about Aaron Rodgers vs. Alex Smith, and I am pretty sure the consensus was that while Smith may have been more of a "sure thing" Rodgers had way more upside and was definitely the guy you wanted if you were a rebuilding franchise. Plus he was from Cali so everyone wanted the 49ers to draft him. Not only did they not draft him but three quarters of the league passed on him as well. I've never seen anything like that before, usually when theres a franchise QB debate those guys always go 1-2 or 1-3. I wonder if there was some story about him back then that was causing all these teams to get cold feet.

tbf it was probably something absurd like ‘he’s too smart’
― mookieproof, Thursday, 16 March 2023 18:16 (two years ago)
yeah but he’s totally gonna turn things around and lead the jets to the promised land (winning 1 playoff game)

The thing w Rodgers’ family was iirc at the time played off like his family was a weird bunch and he had to do it but now it seems like maybe they’re the sane ones. Comparatively speaking. I assume any family that raised this dude is not totally normal.

like so many dudes, he just should have kept his mouth shut and could have remained "enigmatic" instead of an un-enigmatic dumbass

The most “enigmatic” guy I knew got very un-enigmatic around the time he left L.A. and Trump became president. He turned from boring and quiet to boring and fascist pretty quickly.

one last thing for someone loves to go on and on about the power of manifestation and affirmation he sure as hell has lost a lot of playoff games as a solid favorite

I feel like after he won his title, he switched off

Like the board description during his Super Bowl win against the Steelers was "Gay 4 Aaron Rodgers".
He went from untouchable to disappearing in crucial moments

Packers were a bit like Mannings Colts where they were the best in NFL in November and then would with have injuries or let foot off accelerator for last few weeks and come in with bad game to open playoffs.

idk about that, I mean the year after he had probably one of the greatest seasons a QB's ever had. even with a crappy defense everyone thought they might go 19-0 because they were scoring touchdowns on every possession
Rodgers just has this thing where he's super good but I think once you solve the Packers' gameplan he doesn't really have the ability to figure out where the openings are. In fact he's remarkably stubborn sometimes. That's why he has a lot of really insane 1st halves but by the 2nd its like "dont look now but he's still not over 300 yards". even during the SB year this was a problem, they'd come out and wallop teams and build the kind of lead that seemed insurmountable yet somehow the opposing team would always seem to have a chance to win it in the end. We kept saying this is gonna come back to bite them in the ass. Compare to Tom Brady who seems to be the opposite, no matter what you do the guy figures out a way to at least make it close in the end
― frogbs, Sunday, 19 March 2023 16:19 (two years ago)
basically with his arsenal of weapons and ability yet failure to win in the end, coupled with the terrible ideas he gets in his head because he spends to much time listening to the wrong people and alienating everyone around him and his tendency to hang out huddled up in dark chambers, he’s the closest thing the nfl has to saruman.

HATCATs worth 6 big ones, which is cray cray. I'm sure that is enough money for Snyder to do plenty of other evil shit for the rest of his life.

Aaaaand the Rodgers trade to the Jets is a done deal, finally. I'm not sure I'll hate the Packers as much with Love as QB. We shall see.
